Tottenham acted quickly to seal key January deal after swoop for Bayern Munich stopper fell flat

Tottenham started the January transfer window in swift fashion after sealing a deal for Czech Republic Under-21 goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky but he may not have been their first-choice option.

The north London outfit signed the 21-year-old in a deal worth in excess of £10m from Slavia Prague, with Kinsky penning a contract until 2031 after jetting into London on Saturday.

The addition of another stopper is no great surprise given that first-choice Guglielmo Vicario will be out until the end of February at the earliest, while Fraser Forster has made some big errors since stepping up – mostly with his feet – and is also out of contract in the summer anyway.

Brandon Austin made his first start for the club in the 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle due to Forster being ill and acquitted himself well, but bringing in Kinsky gives Ange Postecoglou a quality young option to pick from and a player who is expected to challenge Vicario for the No.1 role going forward.

However, things could have been very different, with several other names on Tottenham‘s list of goalkeeper targets – including Bayern’s Daniel Peretz.

Peretz is nominally Bayern’s rotational keeper but with Manual Neuer picking up an injury just over a week after Vicario fractured his ankle against Manchester City, the 24-year-old has been thrust into regular action with the Bundesliga giants.

Neuer broke a rib in a collision with Jeremie Frimpong in Bayern’s Bundesliga title clash with Bayer Leverkusen, a challenge that also saw him red-carded.

Peretz has started every game since and this development stalled any Tottenham movement for the keeper in the short-term. Indeed, there may have been an opportunity to wait until later in the window and still move for Peretz once Neuer returned. However, with a glut of fixtures coming for the rest of the month, Spurs needed another keeper on board very quickly so Kinsky became the quick fix.

Former coach rates new Tottenham signing highly

Meanwhile, MFK Vyskov goalkeeper coach Rostislav Horacek, who worked with Kinsky at the Czech club during the player’s loan spell, gave an insight into the talented stopper’s strengths, weaknesses and so much more in an interview with Flashscore back in October.

“We probably don’t need to talk about goalkeeping skills, but Tonda [Kinsky] has a great head,” explained the 57-year-old. “He has great self-confidence, but not that he’s cocky, he believes in himself to the fullest.

“It’s hard for me to find any comparison. I would say Martina Sablikova [former Czech speed skater] for example. It’s an internal mindset, where you don’t doubt yourself and have a healthy belief in your abilities. How many times can Tonda do something in a match that would make his job much easier, but he prefers to choose a riskier solution because he wants to solve the situation in a footballing way at all costs. Moreover, it is also reflected in other things.”

Comparisons with fellow countryman Petr Cech have also been made, with the former Chelsea and Arsenal considered one of the Premier League greats. And Horacek revealed that Kinsky regularly faced a similar scenario with Slavia that Cech had on a regular basis in England’s top flight.

“He has an excellent defence in front of him in Slavia, that has to be left alone, but at the same time it is difficult for him in that he often goes 40 minutes without making a save and then has to quickly resolve a difficult situation,” he revealed. “This is exactly what Petr Cech used to do at Chelsea. He had a strong defence in front of him, led by John Terry, but then he had to show off with one or two saves.

“Tonda is strong in this. He can read the opponent and resolve it. I also admit that I am waiting for a match when he will be under more pressure to see how he reacts.”

Kinsky also was also praised for his work with his feet, soemthing Forster has struggled with throughout his lengthy career.

“What I like about him is that his style of play prevents him from coming under pressure,” said Horacek. “He plays in a way that makes sense and prevents the opponent from immediately going on a break. This makes his job easier for him, but above all it helps the whole team.

“Moreover, he doesn’t care which foot he kicks the ball with. I asked him in training which he prefers, but he said he doesn’t care. In short, he kicks with both the same way.”

He added: “He has a problem with one thing. Sometimes he doesn’t get into a match, when he has a 30-minute dead end, where he doesn’t get the ball at all. It bothers him because he loves to play, to pass. He needs it. And when the ball gets to him, he sometimes has a tendency to want to be seen and to invent unnecessarily complicated things.

“I can imagine that against Ajax, for example, the coaches had to restrain him from going crazy with some risky pass, because it could smell like trouble.”

Tottenham confirm pivotal January keeper signing as impact on Guglielmo Vicario revealed

Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the arrival of Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in a deal thought to be worth around £10million, with what impact that will have on current No.1 Guglielmo Vicario also revealed.

The former Slavia Prague shot-stopper was only linked with a move to north London over the weekend after reports claimed that the 21-year-old had flown to London for a medical on Saturday.

Kinsky has put pen to paper, with the deal being officially confirmed on the official Tottenham website on Sunday morning.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Antonin Kinsky from SK Slavia Prague, subject to international clearance and work permit,” a club statement read. “The 21-year-old goalkeeper has agreed a deal that will run until 2031 and will wear the number 31 shirt.”

No transfer fee was officially disclosed, but Fabrizio Romano claimed that the figure was “in excess of £10m”.

Spurs are short on defensive options, with a number of centre-backs on the sidelines while first-choice keeper Vicario will likely be on the sidelines until March time with the fractured foot he suffered in the November win at Manchester City.

Vicario’s replacement Fraser Forster also missed Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle through illness, with Brandon Austin stepping in and performing well against the Magpies.

It’s reported that Kinsky could be thrust between the posts for his debut as soon as the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday – if all the legal documentation surrounding the deal has been processed by then.

However, it’s more likely that Austin, who looked more comfortable in possession than Forster has since stepping in for Vicario, gets the nod for Wednesday night’s first-leg clash.

Kinsky ready to push Vicario

While Kinsky is highly-rated, he’s not expected to replace Vicario going forward but will provide strong competition for the Italy international.

Slavia Prague’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, the youngster played for the Czech team in the Europa League and also their Champions League qualifying matches. Kinsky has kept an impressive 12 clean sheets from his 19 league matches for Slavia this campaign.

Speaking about the move, Kinsky said: “Really happy to be here, it’s been amazing to sign the contract. Tottenham is a big name in Europe and the world, and especially in the Czech Republic and it’s a big honour.

“I spoke with the coaches and the sporting director and I really got the feeling that this is going to be the right choice. It’s a new experience but I’m really happy to make this next step.

“The aim for every player is to be on the pitch and I’m going to try and push in training to try and get the minutes.”

Tottenham are also believed to have looked at Wolves stopper Sam Johnstone and Bayern goalkeeper Daniel Peretz among others before deciding on Kinsky as their keeper of choice.

Latest Tottenham news: Spurs in Kolo Muani mix / Getafe defender in Postecoglou radar

Tottenham are reportedly among a host of teams in the mix to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani in the January transfer window.

The forward swapped Eintracht Frankfurt for PSG in September 2023 in a deal worth up to €90m (€74.7m, $92.6m) but the move has not gone to plan so far.

Kolo Muani flattered to deceive in the 2023/24 campaign after scoring just nine goals and bagging six assists and his fortunes have not improved this season.

The 26-year-old has scored two goals and notched one assist in 14 appearances, and just two of those have come as a starter. Reports suggest the France international wants a January exit and Tottenham are among his suitors.

Meanwhile, the agent of Tottenham target Omar Alderete has hinted his player will leave Getafe in the coming months – but competition for his signature could be fierce – with Spurs in the mix.

‘Time is ticking’ on Ange Postecoglou sack at Tottenham as Newcastle compound ‘tough’ spell

Ange Postecoglou must quickly turn results around or risk being sacked after Newcastle United handed Tottenham Hotspur their latest defeat, according to one TNT Sports pundit.

Tottenham thrashed Southampton 5-0 in the Premier League and beat Manchester United 4-3 to reach the League Cup semi-finals in mid-December, but they have struggled for results since then. They were trounced 6-3 by Liverpool, beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest and then drew 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers prior to hosting Newcastle on Saturday.

Newcastle served Tottenham their third defeat in four games, despite Dominic Solanke giving Postecoglou’s men the lead four minutes in.

A fantastic cross from Pedro Porro was met by Solanke, who held off Sven Botman to head into the bottom corner.

Spurs’ lead did not last long however, as a Lucas Bergvall pass hit Joelinton’s arm before Anthony Gordon raced into the box and sent a left-footed drive past debutant Spurs keeper Brandon Austin.

VAR checked the issue but Spurs were left frustrated as they allowed the goal, deciding that Joelinton’s arm was in a natural position.

Newcastle went ahead shortly before half time when Jacob Murphy got a yard of space away from Djed Spence in the box before putting a dangerous ball across goal, which Alexander Isak finished off with help from Radu Dragusin.

Brennan Johnson hit the post for Spurs after the break, while substitute James Maddison sent a curling effort just wide. Johnson and Son Heung-min both sent wicked crosses into the six-yard box as Spurs pushed hard for a late equaliser, though Newcastle held on to pick up all three points.

On TNT Sports’ post-match coverage, former Arsenal and England star Karen Carney was asked if Spurs are entering crisis mode under Postecoglou. She admitted the manager is slowly edging closer to the sack unless results improve.

Postecoglou will be ‘judged by results’

“As a neutral I’ve come here and I’ve been entertained, I like the style of football that they’re playing,” Carney said. “But you’re judged by the results and unfortunately for Ange Postecoglou the time is ticking.

“He’s got unfortunate injuries. Dragusin goes off, another centre-half that’s gone off. Spence went in, I thought he did very well.

“But ultimately it’s a tough one because he [Postecoglou] is going to be judged. I think the next game, the cup games, he’s come out and said, ‘Look, I usually win cups in my second season’.

“This is a bad run, I think the next couple of weeks will be really testing for the manager. I like him, I like the style he plays, I think he should be given time but it’s obviously tough at the moment.”

Spurs face Prem leaders Liverpool in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday. They will travel to Tamworth in the FA Cup third round after that, before the North London derby against Arsenal on January 15.

Tottenham transfers: First January signing nears; defender boost

Meanwhile, Spurs are close to making Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky their first new arrival of the winter window.

Spurs chiefs are ‘finalising’ a €15million (£12.5m / $15.5m) deal to bring Kinsky to the Premier League from Slavia Prague.

Fabrizio Romano has added that the shot-stopper is poised to fly to England today (Saturday) to undergo a medical and complete the switch.

Kinsky could be followed to North London by Getafe star Omar Alderete.

Spurs have registered their interest in the 28-year-old as they desperately search for centre-back reinforcements.

Alderete’s agent has now confirmed that a move is destined to happen at some stage this year.

“There are four clubs in England that want him,” the representative said. “It’s time to take the leap. If not now [January], he will leave Getafe in the summer.”

Tottenham transfers: Spurs on the cusp of first January signing as Romano confirms swoop for Czech star

Tottenham Hotspur are poised to make Czech Republic star Antonin Kinsky their first new signing of the January transfer window, it has been revealed.

According to reports, Tottenham are ‘on the verge’ of capturing goalkeeper Kinsky as they are ‘finalising’ a deal with his current side, Slavia Prague. The transfer is expected to be worth €15million (£12.5m / $15.5m), while Slavia Prague are set to be given a sell-on clause.

The news was first broken by Czech publication inFOTBAL and Italian journalist Luca Bendoni, who works for Gianluca Di Marzio.

Fabrizio Romano has since provided his information on the move. He states that a verbal agreement is ‘done’ between all parties, including Kinsky himself.

The 21-year-old will travel to London today (Saturday) to undergo a medical and complete the transfer.

Romano adds that Spurs ‘will spend over £10m’ on Kinsky and that they have agreed a long-term deal with the shot-stopper.

The star is the son of a former Czech Republic keeper also called Antonin Kinsky. Kinsky Jr was born in Prague and joined the Slavia youth setup in July 2021.

Over the summer, Kinsky considered leaving Slavia but made a U-turn on that decision after their usual No 1, Jindrich Stanek, got injured.

Kinsky has gone on to keep 14 clean sheets in 29 games for Slavia this season, with six of those appearances coming in the Europa League.

The starlet has great potential and has been called the best Czech keeper of his generation. This, coupled with the fact he is now picking up senior experience, has resulted in Spurs moving in.

Spurs to replace Fraser Forster

Kinsky will bolster Ange Postecoglou’s keeper options, with first-choice stopper Guglielmo Vicario out until early March with a broken ankle.

Postecoglou has largely used Fraser Forster since then, though the Englishman has struggled at playing out from the back and has been guilty of some bad mistakes.

Kinsky is better with his feet than Forster and Spurs fans will therefore be hoping that this can provide the team with more stability, should the new arrival be given regular starts.

TEAMtalk revealed on New Year’s Eve that Spurs are primed to attack the January window to help Postecoglou turn things around.

Goalkeeper is Spurs’ priority, and they look to have solved that issue by landing Kinsky. Next up on Spurs’ wish list is a new centre-back, winger and striker.

Possible targets include Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi, Celtic wide man Nicolas Kuhn and Brighton centre-forward Evan Ferguson.

Tottenham transfers: Son exit; striker signing boost

Meanwhile, Son Heung-min is picking up interest from Turkey, with Jose Mourinho keen to reunite with him at Fenerbahce.

Reports claim that Mourinho is aiming to improve his team with the captures of Son, Chelsea outcast Joao Felix and Roma’s Nicola Zalewski.

To prevent Son from leaving, Spurs must now ramp up talks to extend his contract from June this year to summer 2026.

Ferguson is not the only striker Spurs are keeping tabs on, as they have also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani.

The Italian press claim that Spurs are challenging AC Milan and Juventus for Kolo Muani, who has been told he is free to leave.

Spurs appear to have superior spending power to the Serie A giants, which may give them a transfer advantage.

Now, Corriere della Sera claims Spurs, AC Milan, and Juventus are interested in the 6ft 2in player but the Ligue 1 side’s €60m (£49.8m, $61.7m) price tag will put off the Italian teams. The report states they want to sign him on loan in January, with Kolo Muani said to favour Milan instead of their Serie A rivals.

It seems unlikely that Ange Postecoglou’s side will fork out such a big fee a matter of months from breaking their transfer record to sign striker Dominic Solanke but stranger things have happened. But the wealth Premier League teams have at their disposal may put them at an advantage here.

Kolo Muani wants Premier League move

TEAMtalk previously revealed that the former Nantes player is interested in moving to a Premier League club in the January transfer window.

In addition to Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea are keeping tabs on the Frenchman, whose contract runs until the summer of 2028.

Incidentally, PSG boss Luis Enrique addressed Kolo Muani’s future with Les Parisiens last month. Going by his comments, it seems a parting of the ways is on the cards.

“I could speak about it, but I won’t because my decisions say it all, even if, as I have said, all of my decisions can be changed,” he said.

An intriguing few weeks lie ahead for Kolo Muani and the teams chasing his signature.

Tottenham transfer roundup: Grealish decision, Mourinho wants Son

Spurs are said to be weighing up a shock January move for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish.

The 29-year-old has become a shell of the player City signed for £100m ($120.5m, $124m) in 2021 from Aston Villa but Tottenham are allegedly monitoring the England man’s situation.

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping to sign Spurs skipper Son Heung-min, with the South Korean out of contract this summer.

The 32-year-old worked under the Portuguese and now the ex-United boss is said to be keen to reunite with his old charge.

The agent of Tottenham target Omar Alderete has hinted his player will leave Getafe in the coming months – but competition for his signature could be fierce.

Tottenham have been one of the hardest hit teams this season when it comes to injuries, with Ange Postecoglou unable to call on goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and forwards Wilson Odobert and Richarlison for long periods.

Due to their defensive shortage, which has also been compounded by recent injuries to Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, 18-year-old midfielder Archie Gray has frequently been deployed in Spurs’ backline.

As a result, the north London team have been looking to the transfer market for reinforcements and one such name that has cropped up is Getafe’s Alderete.

Now, his agent, Renato Bittar, says multiple Premier League teams are interested in recruiting the 28-year-old – who is said to have a €16m (€13.2m, $16.4m) release clause.

He told La Razon: “There are four clubs in England that want him. It’s time to take the leap. If not now (January), he will leave Getafe in the summer.”

The report adds that head coach Postecoglou has asked Tottenham to bring in the Paraguay international to improve their defence.

Getafe’s stance on Alderete

While the player’s agent is making these proclamations, Getafe president Angel Torres appeared to pour cold water on a Tottenham transfer move.

Torres assured the Spanish team’s supporters that Alderete, whose contract runs until the summer of 2028, is likely to see out the season at the very least.

He told Marca last month: “The fans can rest assured that Alderete will be here until June. He is happy. We are not going to touch the goal, defence and midfield unless someone pays the release clause.”

TEAMtalk has previously confirmed that Spurs are looking at Alderete as a potential January signing, particularly as he would be a relatively affordable option.

But whether or not Spurs make a concrete offer for the 6ft 2 defender, who can play at centre-back and left-back, remains to be seen.

Tottenham transfer roundup: Mourinho eyes Son, target Brighton man

Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping to bring his old charge Son Heung-min to current club Fenerbahce.

The South Korean is into the last year of his contract and is yet to sign a new deal. Now, the Portuguese is said to be keen on cashing in on this uncertainty.

TEAMtalk revealed that Tottenham are keen on signing Brighton striker Evan Ferguson after he was given the green light to leave in January.

However, we understand that Spurs will only proceed with a move if they can insert an option/obligation to buy into any loan agreement.

Mourinho hunts elite Tottenham ace in thrilling double Premier League raid for Fenerbahce

Jose Mourinho is hoping to sign both Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min and a Chelsea forward at Fenerbahce, according to a report.

Mourinho has used his Premier League connections to improve the Fenerbahce squad with the arrivals of players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Caglar Soyuncu. But the Portuguese icon knows more additions are needed if Fenerbahce are to catch up with rivals Galatasaray, who won the Super Lig title last season and currently have an eight-point lead on Mourinho’s side.

Mourinho knows Tottenham well from his time in charge of the North London club and is a big admirer of their skipper Son.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Son is top of Mourinho and Fenerbahce’s wish list for the January transfer window.

The forward would normally be untouchable at Spurs, given all he has done for the club, though Fenerbahce have been put on alert by his contract situation.

Spurs chiefs have yet to step up contract talks with Son’s entourage, even though his current deal expires in June.

This means Fenerbahce can enter negotiations to sign the South Korea superstar in either a cut-price winter deal or on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Son is not the only big name on Mourinho’s radar. The report adds that he is also keen on Portuguese compatriot Joao Felix, who has struggled to make a significant impact at Chelsea this term.

Felix only returned to Chelsea over the summer, joining in a £46million (£55.5m / $57m) deal, but he is behind Cole Palmer in the pecking order and has mainly had to rely on competitions such as the Europa Conference League and League Cup for starts.

Further afield, Mourinho wants to reunite with his former Roma star Nicola Zalewski in Turkey.

The left midfielder should be the easiest player for Fenerbahce to sign out of the three. He is valued by Roma at around €5m (£4.1m / $5.1m), a fee well within Fenerbahce’s reach.

Fenerbahce are not the only side to have been linked with Son in recent months. Indeed, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and even Turkish rivals Galatasaray have all been named as potential suitors.

In November, Fabrizio Romano stated that Spurs are looking to activate their option to extend the 32-year-old’s contract until summer 2026.

Spurs chiefs need to accelerate this process as teams are queueing up to sign Son, who has netted 169 goals in 430 appearances for Spurs to establish himself as a club icon.

Tottenham transfers: Serie A signing rejected as alternative target named

Meanwhile, Spurs have snubbed the opportunity to land former Everton defender Ben Godfrey, despite being ‘offered’ his services.

Godfrey is poised to leave Atalanta this month as the Italians have deemed him surplus to their project.

But Spurs believe they can bring in a better centre-half to improve Ange Postecoglou’s backline after a disappointing first half of the season.

Jarrad Branthwaite and Milan Skriniar are two players on Spurs’ shortlist. Although, Thomas Kristensen is a player Spurs could swoop for first.

As per Football Insider, Spurs are ‘in a race’ to land the Udinese centre-back, who represents Denmark U21s on the international stage.

Spurs will need to fend off Bayer Leverkusen and Leicester City to land the towering 6ft 5in defender.

Tottenham are reportedly ‘in a race’ with two other clubs, including Leicester City, for the services of 6ft 5in Udinese centre-back Thomas Kristensen, who could be sold for a low fee.

Spurs’ defensive issues at the moment are very clear. Favoured centre-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are both sidelined, meaning Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray have been paired together at the back.

Gray had played the position just once before December, but has played there a further seven times, with Tottenham conceding 17 goals in those games.

It is clear they would rather an actual centre-back there to shore things up, and Football Insider reports they are ‘in a race’ for Udinese man Kristensen.

Also courting the 6ft 5in Denmark under-21 international are Leicester and Bayer Leverkusen.

Tottenham’s January interest stems from a trip to watch the centre-back in action in Serie A in December, a game against Fiorentina in which Kristensen won 100 per cent of his tackles, made five clearances and headed clear three times, while not being dribbled past once.

The report states Udinese value the defender at £16.5million (€19.9m/$20.4m) and they could be ‘tempted’ by an offer of that value.

Tottenham priorities clear

TEAMtalk is aware that Tottenham are planning to strengthen four positions if they can in January: centre-back, goalkeeper, winger and striker.

Kristensen, if he is signed, would of course cover the first of those positions.

If he is as cheap as the report suggests he could be, Spurs would have more money to splash in other areas.

It would seem a cheap snare for Tottenham, too. They have spent more than the £16.5million it may take for Kristensen on three of the centre-backs in their squad: Dragusin, Romero and Van de Ven.

They also paid above that value for centre-back Davinson Sanchez, who no longer plays for the north London club.

Tottenham round-up: Sam Johnstone courted

Another priority position could be strengthened soon, with Tottenham looking into the signing of Sam Johnstone on a loan deal from Wolves, amid Guglielmo Vicario’s injured spell.

Spurs have also been offered two more centre-backs: Fikayo Tomori and Ben Godfrey, and are considering the signing of the first.

However, it’s reported they have turned their nose up at the latter, who they wanted while he was still at Everton, before his move to Atalanta.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk is aware that a move for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson could be pursued by Tottenham in January.

Tottenham are reportedly planning to offer an ‘escape route’ to Wolves man Sam Johnstone, with the goalkeeper surplus to requirements just months after heading to Molineux.

Spurs have been without No.1 goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario since November, when he suffered an ankle injury. After that happened, manager Ange Postecoglou stated he’d keep faith with second-choice keeper Fraser Forster.

But the England international has since conceded 15 goals in seven Premier League games, and almost jeopardised victory in the League Cup quarter-final.

As a result, a new goalkeeper move is in the works, with TBRFootball reporting that Tottenham are exploring a move for another England international – Johnstone.

It’s believed Spurs want to sign him on loan to fill the gap Vicario will continue to leave for some time yet, with it not yet known how long it’ll be until he returns to action.

Wolves are said to be willing to let Johnstone leave in January, and Tottenham will therefore offer an ‘escape route’ for the goalkeeper, who only joined the club in August.

At the time, Wolves thought Jose Sa would be leaving, but he remained, and has played more often that Johnstone.

Johnstone a priority for Spurs

A move for Johnstone, or another goalkeeper, is a priority for Tottenham in January.

Indeed, TEAMtalk is aware they are eager to strengthen the goalkeeper position, along with adding a new centre-back, winger and striker.

It could be difficult to bring in quality players in each position if they were to only sign players permanently.

As such, a loan for somebody with the quality of Johnstone seems a fantastic way to get around that, saving funds for other positions.

Tottenham round-up: More priority moves sought

Moves at centre-back are in the offing, with Tottenham offered Fikayo Tomori, a player they are now considering landing, as per a report.

They had been said to be interested in Ben Godfrey, too, but after he was also offered, it’s reported they’ve turned their nose up at him.

Meanwhile, Spurs are said to be interested in landing Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish, a player they once almost signed from his previous club Aston Villa.

Another potential attacking transfer is that of Evan Ferguson, with TEAMtalk sources stating Tottenham could potentially approach Brighton for his transfer in January.

Tottenham reject signing of England int’l in January, with PSG outcast among three targeted instead

Tottenham have rejected the chance to sign a versatile defender despite being offered the player and his club greenlighting an exit, with a report revealing the three stars they’re targeting instead.

TEAMtalk understands Tottenham are primed to be one of the busiest clubs in the winter window. Our insider, Fraser Gillan, has been informed the board will back Ange Postecoglou whose side has been ravaged by injury this term.

Additions in four different positions are being sought – goalkeeper, centre-back, winger and striker.

Perhaps the most pressing of those positions is centre-half given the current injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Ben Davies – previously a left-back – will primarily be used at centre-back by Postecoglou moving forwards, though he’s also on the sidelines with a hamstring issue.

As such, Football Insider recently brought news of Tottenham sizing up a move for Atalanta’s Ben Godfrey.

The former Everton man – who racked up two caps for England in 2021 – has been marginalised by Gian Piero Gasperini since his arrival from Goodison Park last summer.

And according to an update from Fabrizio Romano on January 2, Atalanta have greenlit Godfrey’s exit this month.

Taking to X, Romano stated: “Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey can leave Atalanta in January as he’s no longer key for their project. Discussions to follow as Godfrey is not even in squad list for the Super Cup.”

Per a report from Mail Online, Tottenham have been ‘offered’ Godfrey’s services. However, it’s then stated Spurs have turned their nose up at the player and ‘won’t be pursuing’ the 26-year-old.

Instead, three higher profile centre-backs are on Spurs’ radar…

Tottenham eyeing higher profile defenders

Mail Online listed Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Ko Itakura (Borussia Monchengladbach) and Milan Skriniar (PSG) as the trio Spurs are casting their eye over.

Branthwaite would not come cheap and there will be little appetite at Goodison Park to cash in mid-season.

Everton showed their resolve to retain their star centre-back last summer when rejecting multiple bids from Manchester United. The biggest offer was worth a total of £50m, with Everton valuing the left-footer in the £70m-£80m bracket.

Itakura, 27, was on Manchester City’s books between 2019-22, though never made an appearance for the club.

He joined Monchengladbach in a permanent deal in 2022 and quickly established himself as a regular starter in their backline.

Skriniar, meanwhile, would perhaps be the easiest to sign from a club-to-club perspective given PSG fully intend to offload the 29-year-old this month.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported in mid-December: “Randal Kolo-Muani can leave PSG in January, same situation as Milan Skriniar. Both have been left out of PSG squad and it was [manager] Luis Enrique’s decision.

“Kolo-Muani and Skriniar both expect to have doors open for exit in the next weeks.”

At 29, Skriniar would not represent a long-term option, though he would make an instant impact.

The Slovakian established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A during his time with Inter Milan. He joined PSG on a free transfer in 2023, though the move hasn’t worked out as either party envisioned.

Skriniar is readily available for transfer in January, but per Mail Online, a transaction will be ‘expensive.’

A separate report from Caught Offside claimed PSG hope to collect €35m (£29m / $36m) when selling the defender. That would be a sizeable sum to pay for a player approaching 30 with little re-sale value.

In other news, TBR Football have listed AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori as another centre-back Tottenham are monitoring. Newcastle are also circling over the five-cap England international.

Elsewhere, Tottenham are reportedly weighing up whether to make a surprise loan approach for Jack Grealish.

The Manchester City winger has gone more than a year without scoring for his club. Given Spurs already possess an ineffective loanee on the left wing in Timo Werner, it would come as a major shock if Grealish were signed too.

Finally, TEAMtalk can reveal Spurs are keen on making a move for Brighton striker, Evan Ferguson, who is available for transfer this month.

However, Tottenham must act fast if they’re to strike a deal after two Premier League rivals made approaches.

GO DEEPER: Why Ben Godfrey isn’t playing at Atalanta

It’s fair to say that Godfrey’s move from Everton to Atalanta was one of the more surprising moves of the summer, but the defender may not have expected to be featuring so rarely in Italy.

Godfrey seemed like a smart pickup by the Serie A side, famed for their intelligent recruitment. As a versatile defender who can play anywhere across the backline, he seemed a solid fit for Gian Piero Gasperini’s three-man defence. But the York-born player has only made five appearances for Atalanta so far, and all of those have been as a substitute.

Later in the summer transfer window, Atalanta brought in Odilon Kossounou from Bayer Leverkusen on loan, and he has been shown more faith out of their two new defenders.

Isak Hien, meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength as Gasperini’s most trusted centre-back, standing out as one of the league’s best, and with La Dea flying at the top of the Serie A table, why change a winning formula?

Realistically, Godfrey is about fourth or fifth choice for Atalanta, especially with top prospect Giorgio Scalvini working his way back from injury, and he may need to secure an early escape if he doesn’t want to waste what should be his prime years as his 27th birthday approaches in January.
