Tottenham Hotspur forward ruled out of Liverpool Carabao Cup semi-final second leg

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou revealed Timo Werner will be out for the next few weeks and therefore will not be available for Spurs ’ Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

Tottenham head to Anfield on 6 February and will hope to secure its place in March’s final at Wembley. A controversial Lucas Bergvall goal in the semi-final first leg means Spurs will travel to Anfield with a 1-0 advantage.

But the north London club will be without Werner for that game after the German sustained a hamstring injury last weekend. It prevented him playing in the midweek Premier League defeat at Arsenal and Postecoglou provided a further update on Friday.

“He had a scan, he has a hamstring tweak, so he'll be out for three to four weeks,” the ex-Celtic boss explained.

With the semi-final less than three weeks away, Werner will be forced to sit the game out, along with matches against Everton, Hoffenheim, Leicester City, Elfsborg and Brentford.

Meanwhile, there was better injury news on Friday with Postecoglu revealing Fraser Forster returned to training this week. Injuries have been a huge issue for Spurs this season and Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson are doubts for this weekend’s trip to Goodison Park.

In addition to Wener, Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie will miss the Liverpool semi-final, but Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur and Wilson Odobert - all of whom are currently injured - could be back in time for 6 February.

As for Liverpool, it only has one real injury issue with Joe Gomez struggling with a hamstring problem. Diogo Jota is a minor doubt for this weekend’s Premier League game at Brentford but there’s no long-term concern with the Portuguese forward’s availability.

While Tottenham leads at the halfway stage of one semi-final tie, it’s Newcastle United who is ahead in the other last-four encounter. The Magpies beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates in the first leg and are heavy favorites to progress to the final.

Incredibly, the north-east side has never won the EFL Cup, while Arsenal’s last win came in 1993. Spurs’ most recent triumph was in 2008, while Liverpool, the competition’s most successful side, is the reigning Carabao Cup champion.

Arne Slot given 3 fresh Liverpool selection dilemmas as 5 struggle across cup double header

Arne Slot will have enjoyed his first taste of FA Cup action. Avoiding what would have been an all-time giant killing was chief among the Liverpool manager’s priorities heading into the weekend, but coming away with a convincing 4-0 victory from the game was a plus.

As was escaping this match and the midweek Carabao Cup trip to Tottenham Hotspur without any fresh injuries. Indeed, the majority of his regular starters were afforded some rest period across the two games.

Andy Robertson hasn’t kicked a single ball since the Manchester United draw, Dominik Szobaszlai - admittedly impacted by illness - played 45 minutes, Luiz Dias just half an hour and Alexis Mac Allister managed 80 minutes.

Arne Slot makes Liverpool fans claim about Trent Alexander-Arnold amid transfer speculation

That minor break in the midst of a jam-packed January could prove imperative, especially as Liverpool returns to Premier League action with tough trips to Nottingham Forest and Brentford. But in the absence of his key men, Slot turned to the fringe members of his squad over two matches, with varied results.

The Dutchman was never going to learn anything from Caoimhin Kelleher’s return for the Accrington game, given the goalkeeper has already proved himself a more-than-able deputy across 13 previous appearances this term. Similarly, Conor Bradley had little to show his manager, but the right-back’s increased on-field minutes will be a boost ahead of the crazy fixture load over the upcoming weeks.

On the opposite flank, with Robertson out, Kostas Tsimikas failed to stake a serious claim to oust the Scotland captain as first-choice left-back. Two steady, yet unspectacular, displays underlined that strengthening in that position could be among FSG’s priorities next summer.

As for the center of defence, 120 minutes without a major error is a significant bonus as Jarrell Quansah bids to prove his worth to Slot. That he was outshone by Wataru Endo in the middle of the back four does pose a problem, though.

The ex-Stuttgart man was excellent at Spurs and followed that up with a commanding performance at Anfield on Saturday. Endo’s tidy passing and excellent positional play may give Slot food for thought when considering his center-back options.

In his place in midfield, Tyler Morton started against Accrington and, while clearly a level above the League Two opponent, didn’t give Slot much reason to reconsider his view of the 22-year-old.

In contrast, Szoboszlai’s quality stood out in the first 45 of the FA Cup tie. With Curtis Jones failing to impress across his last two starts against United and Spurs, Saturday will have been a little reminder of what Liverpool’s No. 8 brings to the party. That the Reds scored six at Spurs with Szobaszlai in the team compared to none without him 17 days later tells its own story.

Harvey Elliott is another who fans were itching to see back in the side, and there was surprise he didn’t receive any minutes at Spurs. Against Accrington, other than some slick passing and good ball retention, there was little that hugely stood amid growing reports of a possible January exit.

As for the attackers, no goals from five shots, two big chances and an expected goals of 0.81 is alarming against a side sitting 19th in League Two. The counter argument for Darwin Nunez will be that across both games he created scoring opportunities, but his inability to consistently convert those chances is a concern.

That he toiled as Jayden Danns impressed should be another worry for the Uruguayian. Danns had some nice touches in possession against Accrington, linked well with team-mates and capped his 18-minute cameo with a goal. He spoke of earning more first-team minutes afterwards and that seems entirely plausible, especially amid Nunez’s struggles.

Federico Chiesa also showed the first glimpses of the player that lit up the European Champions in 2021. His relentless desire to grab a first Liverpool goal, and build some much-needed fitness, was rewarded with a 90-minute strike into the bottom corner in the 4-0 FA Cup win.

Slot mentioned twice in his post-match assessment that fans shouldn’t get ‘carried away’ with Chiesa’s performance but at the very least it might prove to the Liverpool boss that his sole summer import is ready to play a part in the biggest game.

Rio Ngumoha isn’t quite at that level yet, but his Liverpool debut had plenty of plus points, including some lofty post-match praise from Slot. The 16-year-old is, understandably, raw and unpolished. There’s plenty of room for improvement and yet undoubted quality from the youngest-ever Liverpool.

That will be the footnote to a thought-provoking eight-day period for Liverpool and Slot, the subtle impacts of which will likely be felt throughout the final months of the campaign.

Tottenham mascot apologizes and makes U-turn on Virgil van Dijk transfer plea

The Tottenham mascot who pleaded with Virgil van Dijk to sign for the club prior to the Carabao Cup semi-final between Spurs and Liverpool issued a swift apology for doubting his team's players.

The youngster was waiting in the tunnel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the players returned from their pre-match warm-ups, and as Van Dijk walked back to the visitors' dressing room ahead of kick-off, Spurs mascot Rocco shouted: "Van Dijk, come to Tottenham! We haven't got any good defenders at the moment!"

Tottenham has contended with a number of injury issues in defense this season, with first-choice pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven among the players who have missed a significant number of games.

Three players Liverpool could sell this month to make room for Kvaratskhelia

Ange Postecoglou's side lined up with Radu Dragusin and 18-year-old Archie Gray against Liverpool and Spurs ended up keeping a clean sheet and winning the game 1-0.

Cheeky young Tottenham fan Rocco spoke to talkSPORT after the match, and said: "Right, what's up? So, I just wanted to apologise for what I said earlier. I'm sorry for my actions because we've got Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin!"

Meanwhile, Rocco's dad, Charlie, said of his son: "He's in the back of the car and he's got his tail between his legs. He was convinced that he did enough to get Van Dijk to sign for us.

"But about 60 minutes into the game he realised he made a big mistake and he knew that we only need [Radu] Dragusin and Archie Gray to see us through, what a performance.

Jamie O'Hara asked if Rocco had realised he'd gone viral on the night, and Charlie replied: "He didn't until his phone started popping off after it went on talkSPORT. He didn't watch the last ten minutes of the game, he was too busy looking at social media, but he's in the back of the car now."

‘I noticed major issue Liverpool boss Arne Slot must fix from Man Utd and Tottenham games’

It’s official, this is now Liverpool’s worst run under Arne Slot.

The defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final means the Reds’ sequence of games without victory under the Dutchman extends to a record-breaking… two.

Okay, maybe not quite time to panic yet - and with Accrington Stanley next in the FA Cup, there’s every chance that number won’t extend to three games - but a draw against Manchester United and defeat at Tottenham was certainly a significant downturn compared to Liverpool’s prior matches.

'Sense of lag' - UK media spots major Arne Slot worry in Liverpool defeat to Tottenham

There were evident frustrations too. Virgil van Dijk had stern words with defensive team-mates in both games, there was an increase in unforced errors, while a lack of control was an obvious problem. Alexis Mac Allister acknowledged the team couldn’t dominate United as it had in previous matches, and Conor Bradley said the Reds could have been better on the ball at Spurs.

That United and Tottenham pressed well and were confident in possession shouldn’t be overlooked, but in both matches there was a sense that Liverpool just weren’t quite at the races.

The stats would back up that feeling, with a slight decrease in shots, big chances created, expected goals and touches in the opposition box against United and Spurs, although nothing that will overly worry Slot.

But there was one notable absence from the last two performances compared to the three that preceded it when Liverpool easily saw off Tottenham, Leicester City and West Ham United over the Christmas period, scoring 14 across the three games.

Those comfortable wins were underpinned by an attacking threat from midfield. Dominik Szoboszlai scored and assisted when Liverpool battered Spurs 6-3 last month, with Curtis Jones netted on Boxing Day against Leicester and set up Mohamed Salah's goal at West Ham three days later.

In contrast, Jones, playing as the most advanced midfielder in the Carabao Cup game against Tottenham, didn’t manage a single shot or create a chance for others. He also produced just three passes into the final third - a tally beaten by Wataru Endo, who played mainly at center-back during his hour on the pitch.

Against United it was a similar story. An expected assist of 0.02, no shots or successful dribbles and just four passes into the final third. As for Szoboszlai, he missed that match and the trip to Tottenham through illness.

While it’s far too simplistic to lay the blame at the feet of Jones, or simply state that without Liverpool’s attacking midfielder providing a goal threat the team will struggle, but there’s also no denying that results and team performance dropped without a lack of penetration just behind the front three.

Both Jones and Szobszlai, who have mainly played in that role for Liverpool under Slot, have been excellent this season, and he’ll need the pair firing from midfield for difficult upcoming games against Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Lille.

Two matches without a win really is nothing to be alarmed about - that it has taken until the new year for Slot to suffer that fate for the first time as Liverpool boss is an achievement in itself, but the ex-Feyenoord manager will be aware of how quickly bad runs can set in and the need to get his midfield back to its best.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot criticized for two decisions vs Tottenham as 'craziness' awaits

Arne Slot selected a formidable starting XI for Liverpool's League Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham Hotspur. Despite making four changes, key players including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Ryan Gravenberch all kept their places.

However, the Reds didn't perform up to par, suffering a 1-0 defeat. This marked Slot's first away loss since his Feyenoord team was defeated by Celtic in the Champions League group stages back in December 2023.

This is only Slot's second defeat as Liverpool head coach since he took over from Jurgen Klopp last summer. He will be hoping for a return to winning form in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, where they host League Two Accrington Stanley at Anfield.

With a Premier League match against title rivals Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, Slot is expected to rotate his squad significantly. However, this hasn't stopped criticism of Slot's selection decisions against Tottenham.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes Slot made an error by starting both Van Dijk and Salah. "I think he should have rotated a little bit more," Leboeuf said on ESPN UK's YouTube channel. "It's the first leg of a semi-final, so you have that game in the FA Cup against Accrington Stanley.

"So you have an opportunity to rest players and they need a rest. After the tough winter time, they need a rest before starting the craziness of the end of the season.

"It would have been more clever to rest someone like Van Dijk and maybe some others like Salah to make sure they can play the second leg."

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off, Slot explained his selection choices, particularly why Alisson and Diogo Jota were given starts while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were benched. "It's mostly to do with Trent playing so many minutes because Conor Bradley was injured," he said about benching his vice-captain.

"Now it's a good thing we have Conor back who needs his minutes as well. You can see it on the opposite side with Robertson and Tsimikas. There are choices like playing Alisson and Jota, they are two players that came back from an injury. We think they need match rhythm in this period of time after coming back from an injury."

Liverpool injury latest after Tottenham defeat as Jarell Quansah update given

Liverpool fans’ concerns of another injury were eased after Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, with Arne Slot confirming Jarell Quansah did not pick up a knock during the game.

The center-back was replaced by Wataru Endo just before the half-hour mark in the semi-final first leg, after being handed a rare start by Slot.

“He didn’t feel really well, so from the moment the game started until the moment we had to take him off. He felt a pressure, I think he said on his chest,” the Liverpool boss said after the game, when asked about Quansah.

“It went so fast: he came off and the game started again, so I have to ask him exactly, but he said he didn’t feel really well. It was not an injury, more not feeling really well. In the last few days he was a bit ill but we thought he was on his way back, but maybe that had something to do with it. I have to ask, but it had nothing to do with an injury.”

That leaves Liverpool with several selection concerns heading into Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Accrington Stanley. Along with Quansah, Dominik Szoboszlai is also struggling with illness and has missed the last two matches. Tyler Morton, who would have hoped to feature, also has an ankle problem.

“Yesterday, he wasn't in yet,” Slot said on Szoboszlai ahead of the trip to Spurs. “If he's in today, I would doubt if he's available to start the game.” The Liverpool boss will hope both Quansah and Szobaszlai are available to face Accrington, but he’s unlikely to rush either back for the third-round tie at Anfield.

Meanwhile, the only injury at present is Joe Gomez, who picked up a hamstring injury in Liverpool’s final match of 2024. Slot said the defender will be out for a ‘few weeks’, but it’s not clear when exactly he will return to the side.

With just one injury, Liverpool’s record is the best in the Premier League at present. The next lowest is the Reds’ next opponents Nottingham Forest, who have two injuries - Ibrahim Sangare and Danilo - while Manchester United has three and Arsenal and Fulham are without four players due to injury.

'I heard what Virgil van Dijk said after losing to Tottenham

Liverpool suffered just its second defeat of the Arne Slot era on Wednesday night as it was beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

It’s also the first time since the Dutchman’s appointment that Liverpool has gone two games without a win. That we’re in the new year underlines how incredible Slot’s start at Anfield has been, but there is no sense of panic from inside the dressing room.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Virgil van Dijk leading the sense of calmness. The personification of composure, the Liverpool captain led by example once again at Spurs with an excellent display. His leadership qualities were on show all night, whether it was telling Jarell Quansah to relax after an early error or pleading the team’s case to referee Stuart Atwell after Lucas Bergvall wasn’t sent off.

Arne Slot makes VAR point after history made in Liverpool's loss at Tottenham

Liverpool scare shows why it must listen to Jamie Carragher transfer advice

He also put the recent run in perspective and is not concerned at all by a slight drop in standards over recent games.

“I’m not sure we were a level or two [below our best] but obviously at times I think we could have done better,” the center-back told Sky Sports after the match.

“But that’s part of football as well, you try to play your best game ever, every one of us, and at times we played through them nicely and we created some one-v-ones on the side and we created some dangerous moments.

“But they were able to defend it much better than they did when we played here a couple of weeks ago. And, yeah, we move on – we take it on the chin. Like I said, it’s half-time and we have another 90-plus minutes to go and like I said, I am really looking forward to that.”

The last point is the most important and Slot will hope Van Dijk’s stress-free outlook proves infectious. A one-goal lead heading to Anfield won’t offer Tottenham much comfort ahead of the second leg, and Ange Postecoglou will know it’s unlikely his team will be able to book a place at Wembley without netting in the reverse meeting in four weeks’ time.

That shouldn’t be a problem for free-scoring Spurs, although keeping the ball of its own net may prove more difficult for a side who, prior to Wednesday’s meeting against an understrength Liverpool, had kept just one clean sheet in the last 11 games.

Tottenham’s last shutout against Liverpool came in 2015, its last at Anfield in 2012. The Reds have won five of the last six meetings at Anfield, while Spurs' most recent win at Liverpool came nearly 14 years ago. Van Dijk’s right, there’s no need to worry just yet.

Arne Slot makes VAR point after history made in Liverpool's loss at Tottenham

Arne Slot and Ange Postecoglou were in agreement that the referee’s in-stadium VAR announcement on Wednesday night felt unnecessary.

For the first time in English football history, a VAR decision was explained to the crowd in Liverpool’s 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. Stuart Atwell announced via his headset to the ground that Spurs’ goal had been chalked off due to Dominic Solanke being in an offside position before scoring in the 79th minute.

But it was a tweak that neither manager felt was necessary given the obvious nature of the decision. Instead, Slot thought a better use of the microphone system would have been to explain why Lucas Bergvall was not sent off late on.

Rodrigo Bentancur update as Tottenham star posts for first time after injury scare vs Liverpool

The 18-year-old was already on a booking before he slid in on Kostas Tsimikas and somehow managed to escape a second yellow despite catching the Liverpool defender. To rub salt in the wounds, minutes later the Swede fired in the only goal of the game to give Tottenham a first-leg lead ahead of the trip to Anfield in four weeks’ time.

Asked for his view on the night’s VAR interventions and the in-stadium announcement, Slot said: “I think you can't judge something on one game but if it's offside then I don't think anyone had to explain something. When he started explaining something, you saw a red and a blue line.

“I think it would be more interesting for everyone if he would've explained why he didn't give a second yellow card than explaining why he cancelled the goal, because that's what everybody could see on the screen.

“But I know that's not the rule. It's the rule to have these decisions when the VAR is involved, and the VAR was of course not involved in yes or no [for] a second yellow. In general, I think let's judge this not on an evening. Let's judge this if we see this a few more times.”

As for Postecoglou, he was in a typically dour mood despite Tottenham’s win, its first since 19 December.

“Do I welcome it? No,” he said, in response to the offside explanation. “If they'd shown the handball at the weekend would our supporters have been happy? I have to accept this is the way forward, accept I have to be a part of it. But it shouldn't surprise anyone if I'm not a cheerleader for those kind of things.

“I'm really surprised at how, what's the word I'm looking for, how people in this country are so easily letting the game change so much so quickly,” he added. “It's changed more since VAR has come in since I've been involved than in the past 50 years.

“We've just got to be careful about constantly - why do we want to change the game so much? And I know I'm going to be the old bloke in the stands that keeps shouting 'boo' every time and I'll be the only one, but I just thought people would be a little bit more protective about the sanctity of the game.

“I think there's a lot of confusion at the moment. That's my belief that the game is changing on the basis of technology, and I'm saying why isn't anyone speaking up about it? Especially in this country who, for all intents and purposes, you feel, you guys think you're custodians of the game, you've got a song that says 'it's coming home', this is your game, and yet it takes an Aussie from the other side of the world to be the one that's most conservative about changes.”

Ange Postecoglou vehemently rejects Liverpool complaints over controversial Tottenham winner

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou insists goalscorer Lucas Bergvall did not deserve a red card against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spurs in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal. Bergvall, 18, scored the winner in London just moments after avoiding a second yellow card for a late challenge on Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas.

Referee Stuart Attwell waved play on due to Liverpool maintaining possession. Yet the Reds were soon down to 10 players when Tsimikas left the field for treatment - and Bergvall and Tottenham made the most of that numerical advantage by scoring.

Liverpool suffers yet another defensive injury blow during Tottenham game

'I've got two confident predictions about Trent Alexander-Arnold and his Liverpool future'

Liverpool players were furious with Attwell's decision, with captain Virgil van Dijk leading the complaints. Yet Postecoglou believes Attwell made the right decision.

When probed on the incident by Sky Sports, Postecoglou replied: "Great question. No, he wasn't (fortunate to avoid a red card). He wasn't because... the rule is - and we've been told for quite a while now - that if advantage gets played, as long as it's not a cynical tackle, then a yellow card (does not get awarded).

"We've been screaming for it for the last two months. It's happened to us consistently, have a look at our games. We've asked officials and they've said, 'If we play advantage, as long as it's not a cynical tackle, then a yellow card doesn't get paid.' To me, that was pretty clear."

Postecoglou's comments came after Van Dijk told Sky Sports: "I think it was quite obviously that it was going to be a second yellow. Obviously think it was pretty clear (what I said to the referee). It was no coincidence then a minute later he scores the winner.

"But it is what it is. He made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. It was quite obvious I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow. There is a linesman there, a fourth official. There is VAR there and a referee, and he doesn't get a second yellow. I'm not saying this is the reason we lost today, but it was a big moment in the game."
