But Fabrizio Romano reported last night that West Ham were now pushing for a permanent agreement worth €40m, with technical director Tim Steidten travelling out to France.

Could Sander Berge or Youssouf Fofana be heading to Old Trafford now instead?

According to Sky Sports, United have already opened talks with Burnley over a deal for Norwegian midfielder Berge, who wants to make the move from Turf Moor.

Rumours also abound over a potential swoop for Fofana, who has been linked with several clubs this summer after a fine season with Monaco.

In addition to that, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano now reports that Chelsea have also sealed the signing of teenage Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders.

Transfer news LIVE!

Arsenal are still in talks to sign top midfield target Mikel Merino as Liverpool and Manchester United look to end the Gunners’ long-term interest in Martin Zubimendi by snapping up the Real Sociedad star. The Spaniard would cost a single lump-sum payment of £51million and will have to be convinced to move to the Premier League, but anything can happen in the final month of the transfer window.

Latest transfer news and rumours

Brentford man keen to leave after new signing in his position

Frank Onyeka is pushing to leave Brentford this summer, writes Dom Smith.

The 26-year-old has become frustrated at a lack of gametime, making just 11 league starts last season. While the Bees see him as a valuable squad player, Onyeka is ready to leave this month if an appealing offer arrives.

There was initial interest from Fulham and Everton in January, but formal bids never materialised and he remained at Brentford. His current contract runs until 2027 and includes an option for a further year.

Brentford yesterday agreed a deal to sign Napoli midfielder Jens Cajuste in Onyeka’s position.

Cajuste is set to join on an initial loan deal, with an obligation to buy for £10million next summer.

Chelsea to surpass £150m transfer spend

Chelsea are ready to take their summer incomings to around £150million after agreeing a £35m deal to sign Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion.

The 20-year-old has agreed terms on a seven-year contract as part of a move that is separate to the deal which will see Conor Gallagher join Atletico for a similar fee.

Chelsea have already spent more than £100m this summer on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen, Omari Kellyman, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu and Tosin Adarabioyo.

The Blues have offset those incomings with the sales of Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson, which have generated around £90m. They have also released Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva.

Evening Standard

Man Utd plot audacious Barcelona bid

Manchester United have launched an audacious bid to sign Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutch midfielder has previously been tipped by Spanish media to be up for grabs if the Catalans are serious about landing Arsenal target Mikel Merino.

According to ManchesterWorld, United have made an initial enquiry.

They are said to be willing to pay up to £40m for De Jong, although Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is thought to be against selling him.

Conor Gallagher arrives for Atletico Madrid medical

Conor Gallagher has arrived in Madrid to finalise his move to Atletico.

Chelsea have agreed to sell Gallagher for around £35million and the England midfielder is due to undergo a medical in the Spanish capital on Thursday.

Gallagher touched down in Madrid in the early hours of Thursday morning and was filmed signing autographs as he left the airport.

The 24-year-old is set to sign a five-year contract at Atletico Madrid after he was convinced to move to the LaLiga giants by coach Diego Simeone.

Liverpool target skips training to force transfer

A wild story coming out of Italy this morning.

Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners has skipped training to try and force a move away from the Italian club, his coach has revealed.

Rumours of a £45million transfer away from Bergamo have been rife since Koopmeiners helped his team win last season’s Europa League, with Liverpool strongly linked as Arne Slot eyes his first new signing.

However it is Juventus in pole position for the Dutchman and Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has claimed that the player has already agreed to move to Turin, leaving his club feeling “blackmailed”.

“The situation with him was going very well until last week, then the player decided to go to Juventus,” Gasperini revealed to local newspaper L'Eco di Bergamo.

“He already has an agreement, he feels stressed and has decided not to play or train with us anymore.

“With this attitude he cannot be useful to the team, nor to his teammates. The club therefore has taken a very firm line, because we feel blackmailed by this situation.”

Spurs line up £65m Dominic Solanke swoop

Tottenham are interested in a move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Spurs want to bring in a new No9 and Solanke is one of their transfer targets. The 26-year-old has a release clause which is believed to be around £65m.

Solanke is coming off the back of an excellent season in which he scored 19 Premier League goals. Only Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer and Erling Haaland managed more.

Ange Postecoglou wants to add more firepower to his squad and Solanke is seen as a good fit for his style. Should Spurs meet his release clause, it would be a club-record fee.

The Standard

Chelsea plan Samu Omorodion medical

Chelsea are set to put Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion through a medical.

The move for the 20-year-old is said to be worth around £35m and is separate to the deal which is set to see Conor Gallagher join Atletico for a similar fee.

Chelsea want to sign a new striker and Omorodion has been cleared to leave Atletico after the Spanish giants agreed an £81m deal to sign Julian Alvarez from Manchester City.

Personal terms on a seven-year contract have reportedly already been agreed, meaning only a medical and signature are left to conclude a deal.

Getty Images

Liverpool and Man Utd battle for Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool are confident of beating Manchester United to the signing of Martin Zubimendi.

The Red Devils have reportedly turned their attention to the Real Sociedad player having cooled their bid to sign Manuel Ugarte from PSG.

Zubimendi is available for a £51m release clause although that is a single up-front payment, which could be tough to match up with PSR, and has previously rebuffed the idea of leaving San Sebastian.

However, teamTALK claim Liverpool are hopeful of being able to land a player who has also caught Arsenal’s eye in recent years.

AFP via Getty Images

Mikel Merino to Arsenal delay explained

Arsenal are still in talks to sign Mikel Merino.

The delay in the Gunners’ move for the Real Sociedad, which has been rumbling along for some time now, is said by Fabrizio Romano to be due to a lack of agreement on multiple parts of the deal.

Merino is keen to sign for Arsenal so it is all down to the clubs.

The structure of the deal and exact amount are still reportedly being negotiated.

Once a breakthrough is made between the Gunners and La Real, this transfer should motor on pretty quickly.

Arsenal move for Mikel Merino takes new twist

Arsenal target Mikel Merino has returned to pre-season training with Real Sociedad, writes Simon Collings.

The midfielder had been on an extended break after helping Spain win Euro 2024 this summer.

Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay had last week expressed doubts about whether Merino would join up for pre-season training, given Arsenal’s interest in him.

“I don’t know, we are aware that Merino has offers, and we know them,” Aperribay was quoted as saying by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

“The conversation with him and those around him has been very sincere and I hope his decision is to stay, he already knows that we want him to stay. He has had a renewal offer for some time. And if not, we will try to negotiate the best way out for Real Sociedad.”

Real Sociedad have their final pre-season friendly this week, when they take on Union Berlin on Friday, and it remains to be seen whether Merino takes part.

Other targets are now being looked at, but United could return to Ugarte if PSG’s stance softens.

Reports that surfaced earlier this week claimed that Newcastle had opened talks with Crystal Palace over a potential deal for the England centre-back after his impressive showing in place of Harry Maguire at Euro 2024.

But now The Sun says that Liverpool also want Guehi, whom Palace value at a whopping £75m.

The Reds have yet to make their first new signing of the Arne Slot era, but that could soon change.

Tottenham plot opening £43m bid for Dominic Solanke

Tottenham have begun talks over signing Dominic Solanke.

According to Caught Offside, contact has been made with the striker's agents and an opening bid of around £43million will be submitted to test Bournemouth's resolve.

The Cherries are holding out for the striker's full £60m release clause to be met, though Spurs hope to land the player for slightly less.

Manchester United to up Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui bid

Manchester United are still working hard to sign both Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

The Red Devils have made the Bayern Munich duo their new top summer transfer targets after the respective signings of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

However, negotiations with the Bundesliga giants have been notably slow so far, while there has also been plenty of rival interest in Moroccan right-back Mazraoui in particular.

According to the latest reports from The Sun, United have only offered £51m for the pair, with Bayern refusing to move from their asking price of £64m for both players.

Antonio Conte threat to Napoli is good news for Chelsea

Antonio Conte is already playing a familiar tune at Napoli, less than two months after being appointed.

According to Gianluca Di Marizo, the manager has issued an ultimatium to the club: sign a striker, midfielder and winger within 48 hours or I will resign.

Cristian Stellini will take over should Conte go through with his threat.

That is potentially good news for Chelsea, who want Romelu Lukaku to join Napoli as Victor Osimhen arrives on loan.

Julian Alvarez a dream Arsenal signing

Arsenal eye shock deal for Julian Alvarez

Arsenal are eyeing a shock deal for Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, reports claim.

The Argentine World Cup winner’s future at the Etihad Stadium has become subject to doubt over recent weeks, with Chelsea linked and both Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain supposedly in talks over a potential move.

Arsenal are still on the hunt for a major new striker addition this summer and the Daily Mirror now report that the Gunners are on ‘red alert’ over Alvarez as they keep a very close eye on his situation at City.

Chelsea talks for Victor Osimhen takes new twist

Chelsea are hopeful that Victor Osimhen will change his stance on a loan move, and Antonio Conte's frustration could play into their hands.

The Blues and Napoli are in talks over a loan move, which would see Romelu Lukaku move permanently to Naples, but Osimhen has so far refused to go on loan anywhere.

Fabrizio Romano said: “From what I’m told, I don’t think it’s going to be a situation resolved today, tonight, Monday or Tuesday. It’s going to take some time to understand what happens between Napoli and Chelsea, because as of today, Osimhen and his agent have no intention to go on loan.

“Chelsea know that Napoli will return for Romelu Lukaku, and they know that conversations will continue. But at the moment, the issue is not Napoli. The issue is the player. Napoli are prepared to sell Osimhen, but the player doesn’t want to go on loan.”

But Conte is starting to throw his toys out the pram. More on that next.

Mikel Merino is very keen on a move to Arsenal and is expected to join soon.

The Gunners are understood to have switched their attentions to Spain’s European Championship-winning midfielder after completing their first major signing of the summer in Riccardo Calafiori.

According to Spanish publication AS, Merino would be delighted to join Arsenal and is keen on a move to London.

It is reported that Arsenal would only need to pay around €30m for a player who has just one year left to run on his current contract at Real Sociedad in LaLiga.

Talks have progressed between the clubs in recent days, Fabrizio Romano adds, with the final details on how the deal will be structured left to agree.

Tottenham’s 100 per cent start to pre-season is over after slipping to a narrow 2-1 friendly defeat against Bayern Munich in Seoul on Saturday. Pedro Porro scored with a brilliant strike to give Spurs hope amid an improved second-half showing in the South Korean capital, but ultimately it was not enough to secure a share of the spoils as their run of summer wins was halted at four following earlier victories over a K-League XI, Vissel Kobe, QPR and Hearts.

Bayern enjoyed a brilliant opening half in their first real pre-season test under new boss Vincent Kompany after matches against German minnows Rottach-Egern and FC Duren, with young forward Gabriel Vidovic capitalising on the absence of former Spurs talisman Harry Kane following England’s run to the Euro 2024 final as he netted inside five minutes following a bad mix-up between Guglielmo Vicario and Djed Spence.

The Bundesliga giants could have been out of sight at the interval as by far the superior team, but it was actually when Spurs were fighting back after half-time that they doubled their lead thanks to substitute Leon Goretzka. Porro’s rocket gave Tottenham late hope in a thoroughly entertaining match, but Bayern held on for the win as they prepare to face the same opposition again in the Visit Malta Cup in north London next weekend. Fulham open to Jay Stansfield U-turn

Fulham have not ruled out sending Jay Stansfield out on loan again this season, writes Dom Smith.

The 21-year-old striker scored 13 goals on loan last season with Birmingham — who wanted to sign him permanently afterwards — before returning to Fulham this summer. Manager Marco Silva said at the end of last season that he wanted the England Under-21 international to stay with Fulham for the 2024/25 campaign.

However, Standard Sport understands a decision on where he spends this season is yet to be made, with Fulham open to loaning Stansfield out again if an attractive enough proposal materialises.

A sale has also not been ruled out. While that is not Fulham’s desired outcome, any transfer fee would count as pure profit for accounting purposes, given he is an academy product.
