Tottenham saw an impressive five-match winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion before the international break as they threw away a two-goal lead at Brighton, completely collapsing in the second half to lose 3-2.

Ange Postecoglou will be looking for an instant reaction from his side, as will an expectant crowd at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, as the Lilywhites prepare for a derby against fierce rivals West Ham.

The Irons earned a paradoxical result to their rivals last time out, snapping a five-match winless run by thrashing Ipswich 4-1, and, despite a mixed start to the season, Julen Lopetegui’s men may be quietly confident for Saturday, having won this fixture 2-1 last term.

Tottenham to win and both teams to score @ 6/4

Michail Antonio anytime goalscorer @ 16/5

Spurs likely to land a thrilling London derby

While West Ham dug deep to win at Tottenham last term, that result looks an anomaly in the grand scheme of things, with Spurs winning four and drawing the other of the pair’s previous five meetings in north London.

The Hammers are also poor travellers, losing five and winning just one of their last eight away games, making this trip extremely daunting for a side who have failed to find stability in the early weeks of the Lopetegui era.

The shift in style from David Moyes to Lopetegui has been difficult for West Ham, who have also attempted to integrate nine new signings into their squad. A 4-1 win over Ipswich last time was a step in the right direction, but they are likely to come crashing back down to Earth at their rivals' home.

However, while Spurs are fancied to win this thanks to a more settled squad and obvious style under Postecoglou, their defence has continued to look shaky and they may be breached by the Hammers.

Tottenham have managed just three clean sheets in their last 18 Premier League matches and given both teams to score has been a winning bet in five of the last six head-to-heads and five of West Ham's last six outings, it could pay to back the Hammers to notch a goal in their derby-day defeat.

In-form Antonio can strike while the iron’s hot

Those looking for a Hammer to notch are likely to gravitate towards top scorer Jarrod Bowen, who has three goals this season and bagged 16 in the Premier League last term.

However, at the prices, it could pay to back Michail Antonio to be the standout star for the visitors in north London against an opponent he has haunted on plenty of occasions over the years.

Antonio was famously the first away scorer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019 and his record of six goals in 14 games against the Lilywhites is a more-than-respectable return playing for a side who regularly go into this fixture as the underdogs.

The Jamaican forward had endured a difficult start to the season but looked back to his best against Ipswich, scoring the opener and troubling the Tractor Boys’ backline throughout.

A repeat of that performance could cause an occasionally error-prone Spurs defence plenty of issues on Saturday and Antonio is a decent price to find the net at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Sir Alex Ferguson won unlikely European trophy then turned down Arsenal and Tottenham before smashing rivals to bits with Man United

Description

Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson owes a debt of gratitude to former Aberdeen chairman Dick Donald.

Aberdeen was the third stop in Ferguson's managerial career after spells at Scottish clubs East Stirlingshire and St Mirren.

In fact, Ferguson initially declined the Aberdeen role in 1977, only to take over a year later.

Ferguson did not have to wait long to bring success to the Dons as they beat out the likes of Celtic and Rangers to win the Scottish Premier Division in his second season in charge.

But Ferguson's crowning moment with the Scottish club came in 1983 via the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

The tournament, which was abolished in 1999, pitted the winners of domestic cup competitions across Europe against each other.

Aberdeen gained passage to the tournament thanks to their Scottish Cup victory in the 1981/82 season when they beat Rangers 4-1 in the final.

The Scottish side forced the rest of the competition to sit up and take notice when they beat German giants Bayern Munich 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter finals.

A win over now-defunct Belgian side Waterschei Thor sealed a spot against Real Madrid in the final.

Despite going in as major underdogs, Ferguson's side pulled off the shock of a lifetime as they beat Madrid 2-1 in extra time to win the European Cup Winner's Cup.

Ferguson also led Aberdeen to the UEFA Super Cup the following season as they beat Hamburg in November 1983.

To date, those two victories remain Aberdeen's only success in Europe.

To no-one's surprise, clubs in England took a liking to Ferguson's stunning achievements in charge of Aberdeen.

However, were it not for a conversation with then-Dons chairman Donald, Ferguson's career could have taken a drastically different path.

"I turned down Arsenal and I turned down Wolverhampton Wanderers and I turned down Tottenham," Ferguson told TNT Sports.

"I said [to Aberdeen chairman Dick Donald] that maybe it was time for me to leave, blah, blah, blah, and he said to me, 'Don’t talk like that'. You should go only to one club – Manchester United.

"I never budged until that came along. When it came along, I couldn’t get there quick enough."

Despite the grandeur of the Red Devils, Ferguson revealed there was still a slight sense of hesitation about taking on the role.

However, there was one key philosophy he was determined to introduce to United given how well it had served him at his two previous managerial stops.

"I have to say there was a lot of trepidation about it," Ferguson said.

"Travelling down that morning, in the plane with Martin Edwards and the lawyer Maurice Watkins, I was asking a lot of questions and I wasn’t getting all the answers. Wee Gordon Strachan used to phone me quite a lot and I didn’t get a great picture through that.

"I knew all the players, world-class names in many ways. I was determined to install something I did at Aberdeen and St Mirren, and that was to produce young players."

As they say, the rest is history.

Ferguson took over United in November 1986 and went on to manage over 1,400 games for the Red Devils until his retirement in May 2013.

Under Ferguson, United won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League titles to cement the club as the dominant force in English football.

But had it not been for the wise words of Donald, the decades of success at Old Trafford under Ferguson may never have transpired.

Statistics show that Kyle Walker only has 80th fastest speed in Premier League as Tottenham star takes top spot

Description

Kyle Walker's speed is one of his biggest attributes, but his Premier League speed stats this season make for very surprising reading.

The Manchester City defender's speed was placed under the microscope following his side's 3-2 win over Fulham in City's most recent outing.

Walker went head-to-head with the electric Adama Traore and was so close to overtaking the winger when chasing a long ball.

Although reported data says his recorded speed was less than that of the Fulham man's 33.8km/h, Walker still hit an impressive 31.4km/h.

It also falls short of his top speed this term of 33.6km/h in City's 1-1 draw with Newcastle last month, but even this is way off the league's highest.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was last season's fastest Premier League player with a record-breaking 37.38km/h and sits top for the current campaign so far.

He hit an incredible 37.1km/h in Spurs' 3-0 win at Manchester United that included a dazzling run before assisting Brennan Johnson's opening goal.

Comparatively, Walker's speed against Newcastle doesn't even reach the top ten bracket of fastest players this season.

The 34-year-old actually sits 80th overall, with his teammate Erling Haaland taking the no.1 spot for City with 35.7km/h.

Walker's quickest sprint is a far cry from the 37.31km/h he set during the 2022/23 season, which was the Premier League's highest.

His fellow England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been a faster player so far this campaign having hit 34.7km/h for Liverpool.

Age may understandably be a key factor in the decline of Walker's speed compared to his efforts two seasons ago.

However, he has still made seven appearances in all competitions for City so far this season, with Pep Guardiola still reliant on his quality.

Walker still has seven months left to finish as the fastest Premier League player for 2024/25 but Van de Ven's top speed will take some beating.

The Dutchman sits 0.5km/h ahead of Wolves winger Carlos Forbs and also has the fourth quickest speed with 35.8km/h.

His Spurs teammate, Timo Werner, is also one of the fastest Premier League players with the 35.7km/h he recorded against Newcastle.

The full top ten according to statistics provided by Opta has been listed below and shows just how quickly top flight players can run.

Tottenham will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday lunchtime against West Ham after their five match winning streak came to a disappointing end against Brighton a fortnight ago, in which Spurs gave up a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.

The defeat saw Ange Postecoglou's side drop back down the table in ninth place after an initially slow start to the season which saw them win just one of their opening four matches.

The north London side will be looking forward to being back at their home stadium for the first time this month having played three consecutive away games, with Spurs having won three of their four matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

They take on a West Ham side who earned just their second league victory of the season in their last outing before the international break, which saw them beat newly promoted Ipswich 4-1 at the London Stadium.

Julen Lopetegui hasn't got off to the blistering start he'd have liked since taking over from David Moyes in the summer, with the Hammers having picked up eight points from their seven matches in the Premier League so far, winning just one of their last six matches in all competitions.

The side from east London make the trip to the north of the capital not having won any of their last three matches on the road, with three defeats in their last six outings, and just one win in their last six against Spurs.

West Ham will take confidence in their recent matches against Postecoglou's men though, having earned four points from their games with Spurs last season, including victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Premier League LIVE: Tuchel appointed England manager on 18-month contract, Spence signs new Tottenham deal, Chelsea goalkeeper suffers bizarre injury

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Got to hurt

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has suffered an eye injury during a game for Denmark and actually lost vision briefly.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Blues this summer from Villarreal, had to be withdrawn during a 2-0 win over Iceland Under-21s after a collision.

He was assessed after the match and is now heading back to England.

However, it's unlikely he will be able to play any part against Liverpool at the weekend, so someone else will have to be on the bench.

Signed and sealed

Tottenham have announced that young English defender Djed Spence has penned a new contract with the club.

The right-back has signed a contract extension until 2028.

The 24-year-old joined Spurs in the summer of 2022 from Middlesbrough after an outstanding loan campaign with Nottingham Forest in which he helped them gain promotion to the Premier League.

However, since arriving, he's struggled for regular game time, making just ten senior appearances for Tottenham.

Spence has had three seperate loan spells away from north London, with Stade Rennais, Leeds and Genoa.

But he's back with Spurs this year, and the club clearly believe he has a future with them.

'They've failed'

Former England defender Danny Mills believes that the fact Thomas Tuchel is the new Three Lions boss is a sad indictment of English coaching.

The FA's CEO, Mark Bullingham, revealed that they spoke to other options, including some English coaches before going for Tuchel.

Speaking to talkSPORT about it, he said: "I don't have an issue with Thomas Tuchel being manager. He's the best of what is available.

"There were English candidates who didn't want the job or the FA didn't think were up to it.

"The issue I have is with the FA, and some of Mark Bullingham's comments were really poor.

"Ten candidates is a huge amount to interview, and the fact he said several were English, but we now have the best man for the job.

"So, what is the point of St George's Park? What have they been doing for the last 12 years, trying to produce managers to get them to the top job.

"Surely, they've failed.

"Tuchel said that international football is new to him and that he wasn't sure how it was going to go, and it's like how bad were these other candidates."

'We will answer this question in March'

New England manager Thomas Tuchel has refused to confirm if Harry Kane will remain captain.

The Three Lions striker and German struck up a fruitful partnership at Bayern Munich together.

Tuchel did heap a lot of praise on Kane, but revealed he would select his skipper in March.

He also revealed that he didn't speak to Kane before taking the England job.

He said: "I spoke to no one. We kept the process very confidential.

"I didn't speak to Harry because I like to have my own feeling and point of view for a job."

Then on the specific role of captain, he said: "You know how highly I think about Harry and how hard I fought to take him to Bayern Munich.

"But we will answer this question in March."

Meanwhile, Kane is happy to be working with Tuchel again.

In a tweet, he said: "Looking forward to playing under the boss again!"

Tuchel's contract

When it was announced that Thomas Tuchel would be the new England manager, it was confirmed he had signed an 18-month contract.

There was no mention of a possible extension, but the German has revealed that he could end up staying longer.

Speaking at his unveiling press conference, he was asked about the deal he's signed.

He said: "It's 18 months, and then we agreed to sit together and we will see.

"I usually have success within the first 18 months, I am still working on my long-term game.

"But seriously, the time frame of 18 months excites me because it will help us to focus.

"We are focused on qualifying and competing in the World Cup.

"We are looking at achieving the best possible outcome in 2026."

FA's process

Thomas Tuchel was joined by the FA's CEO, Mark Bullingham during the press conference unveiling the German as the new England manager.

At the start, he praised Tuchel and expressed his delight at securing his signature for the next 18 months.

He was also asked about the recruitment process, and though he didn't say too much, it's emerged that Tuchel was one of ten potential options.

Speaking about the process, Bullingham said: "The process was confidential, but we had to maintain that confidentiality for the candidates.

"We interviewed ten people and some were English, but I won't be divulging anything more, but some were more up for it than others, and we are delighted to have Thomas."

God Save The King

Despite being German, Thomas Tuchel has refused to rule out singing the national anthem now that he is England manager.

Interim boss Lee Carsley drew some criticism from some for not singing the national anthem.

The former midfielder was born in England, but he did represent the Republic of Ireland at international level, so you can see why he was conflicted about doing so.

However, at his unveiling press conference, Tuchel was asked about the national anthem and indicated he would have a decision on that shortly.

He said: "The FA told me it's a personal decision to sing the national anthem. I have not made my decision yet.

"But what I will say is that the national anthem is very moving, and I have experienced it many times here at Wembley.

"But no matter what decision I make, I will always respect the country and its traditions."

'I will do everything'

The decision to make Thomas Tuchel the new England manager has divided opinion across the country.

There are those who feel that the head coach of the national team should be English because international football is traditionally about your best versus our best.

There are others who feel this England side should be winning stuff, so you get the best person for the job.

For many, Tuchel is the best person for the job, given what he's won.

However, he had a clear message for his doubters.

He said: "I hope these supporters felt my passion for the Premier League and my passion for the country.

"I love to live and work here.

"I love the players, and I love the fans.

"I will do everything to show respect to this country, and the target for the next 18 months is the biggest in football."

Tuchel's vow

New England manager Thomas Tuchel has sent a direct message to Three Lions fans.

The German has signed an 18-month contract with the FA, which starts in January and will expire after the 2026 World Cup.

And he is already looking at the tournament in North America.

In a message posted on social media from Wembley, the former Chelsea boss said: "Hi guys.

"Thomas here.

"It's my first message as the English head coach. I am at Wembley, where else?

"There is a reason to be nervous. I think that's a good thing.

"I can promise you, I am very excited. I am very honoured, and I will do everything we can to qualify for the World Cup, and try to get a second star."

The view from Germany

Well, it's a strange one, but a German will be in charge of the English national team for the first time, with Thomas Tuchel the man to lead the Three Lions.

It's split opinion here, so talkSPORT wanted to find out how it had gone down in Tuchel's country of birth.

German football expert Constantin Eckner joined Jim White, Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy to talk all things Tuchel.

He said: "It's a bit of a surprise.

"Most people knew that Tuchel wanted to go back to England because he prefers to be in England.

"But it is a bit of a surprise that it's the English national team and not Manchester United or something.

"International football might suit him better because he can be very charming, but he can also be off-putting and irritated once things don't go his way.

"Usually, when he joins, he has an immediate impact, but often due to a hectic schedule, he loses the connection to the team.

"International football offers you the chance to work a lot and analyse a lot and come up with new plans."

Jordan's verdict

Simon Jordan believes that England have appointed an elite coach in Thomas Tuchel despite his issues with clubs in the past.

The German is known for falling out with people at every club he's been at, often over transfers.

But with that issue removed, Jordan can see how Tuchel will work.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "We know that Tuchel is a bag of trouble. We know that in a domestic situation, he would fall out with his mother.

"There are constant reminders that he can't manage up.

"But you've got a manager here who is a brilliant coach, but he hasn't managed up very well.

"He has got to manage for 15 meaningful games for 18 months - that his remit.

"This man wins football matches. This man produces football teams, and that's all I am worried about.

"The worst thing that can happen is we put an elite coach in and find out our players aren't good enough to achieve what we think they are capable of achieving."

'Several candidates'

The FA have revealed that they spoke to plenty of potential successors to Gareth Southgate before opting for Thomas Tuchel.

The ex-Bayern Munich manager has penned an 18-month contract, which will start in January, meaning it's clear his remit is to win the World Cup in 2026.

He also signed his contract more than a week ago.

The FA don't mention who they had spoken to, but Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe and Graham Potter were all people linked with the job, so you would expect the candidates to have been high calibre.

The process to find the next permanent England manager started in July, and it was decided that Tuchel is the man to lead the Three Lions.

This is sure to please Harry Kane, who has a big admirer in Tuchel.

Speaking about the England captain last year, the new Three Lions boss said: "It's just a gift, I feel very privileged to be his coach. The guy is super humble, he's the first out there on the pitch every single day and anything you ask of him, he will do it.

"He's a huge personality who becomes a shark on the field, because he wants to score, he wants to win, and he does it on a daily basis. He doesn't only score on a daily basis, he trains well, he does what is needed, he shows his quality.

"He calms everyone down around him and makes everyone better by his pure presence. It's the highest level, I can put it like this, as a human being but also as a footballer. He's a very different profile to all of my other players. He can play as a nine, a fox in the box like no other with outstanding finishing, but he also assists."

Anthony Barry

Thomas Tuchel is set to be joined by Anthony Barry as his assistant manager for England.

The Englishman worked with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he will form part of the backroom staff that the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager will assemble.

Barry first met up with Tuchel when the German became the Blues' manager during the 2020/21 season.

He impressed Tuchel so much during their time together that he took him to Bayern with him in 2023.

The 38-year-old from Liverpool previously worked as the assistant manager for Wigan Athletic before heading to Stamford Bridge to work with Frank Lampard.

But while with Chelsea, Barry also joined up with the Republic of Ireland to work alongside Stephen Kenny before briefly working with Roberto Martinez and the Belgian national team.

Tuchel then came calling, and Barry headed off to Bavaria for a year, and he will now get the chance to help lead his country of birth to glory.

Details on Tuchel's appointment

Now that the dust is settling on Thomas Tuchel becoming England manager, it's time to look at the details of his appointment.

The former Bayern Munich boss is set to be the first German to manage the England national men's team, while he will start work in January 2025.

He has also signed an 18-month contract with the Three Lions, meaning it's clear his remit is to win the World Cup.

But what's really interesting about Tuchel's appointment is that the FA confirmed he signed the contract on Tuesday, October 8, which was before England played Greece and Finland.

This would massively explain Lee Carsley's comments about basically not wanting the England job.

But Carsley will take the last two Nations League games of the campaign before handing the reigns to Tuchel.

And Mark Bullingham, the FA's CEO, is very happy with the appointment of Tuchel.

He said: “We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world and Anthony Barry who is one of the best English coaches to support him. Our recruitment process has been very thorough.

"Before the EUROs we had a contingency plan and outlined exactly the qualities we would be looking for in a coach. Since Gareth resigned, we have worked through the candidate pool, meeting a number of coaches and evaluating them against that criteria. Thomas was very impressive and stood out with his vast expertise and his drive. Anthony is a top English talent and also has international experience with Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal.

"Fundamentally we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we believe they will do just that. Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026.

"I would like to thank Lee for stepping up and doing everything we asked of him – he is a very talented coach and a major part of our England pathway. He will now focus on retaining the U21 EURO title in the summer. These are exciting times for England fans at senior and MU21 level, and we look forward to welcoming Thomas and Anthony when they begin work in January."

Klopp's approval

Thomas Tuchel is the new England manager.

He has signed an 18-month contract and will start in January, and it's his first time as an international manager.

But as a club boss, he has never faced a manager more than Jurgen Klopp, meeting him 19 times across their career.

Both started off coaching in Germany before heading to England and taking charge of Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.

Klopp actually boasts a very strong record against Tuchel, beating him 11 times, but the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager is a huge fan.

Speaking about his fellow German in 2022, Klopp heaped a load of praise on Tuchel.

He said: "My respect for Thomas was already as high as you could imagine. Then add in what he has had to contend with off the pitch in recent weeks and months and this respect makes even more sense.

"What a magnificent leader he is for his club. No surprise for those of us who competed against him in Germany. But I think his status as one of the very best coaches and managers in the world is rightly recognised throughout the game."

So, if Klopp's opinion is anything to go by, England have the right man in charge.

Tuchel time

England have announced the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new Three Lions boss.

The FA have released a statement confirming the German's appointment to permanently replace Gareth Southgate.

He will be joined by Anthony Barry and will start work on January 1, 2025 and has signed an 18-month contract.

Tuchel worked with Barry at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, winning four trophies in their time together.

talkSPORT understands that he will be one of the highest-paid managers in England's history, earning between £6-7 million a year.

In a statement confirming the news, Tuchel said: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.

"Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”

Tuchel ball

How will England play under Thomas Tuchel? German football expert Raphael Honigstein suggested it may not be much different to how they played under Gareth Southgate.

“His playing style used to be interesting. He used to be the biggest fan of Pep Guardiola and his football was very much Pep inspired

“And then when he went to PSG, he already had to adjust because he realised, ‘I can't play pressing football, I can't play hugely tactical football with the likes of Mbappe and all these guys. I have to keep them entertained, I have to give them freedom.’

“And it was already something very different. And then he went to Chelsea, as you know, and played, I don't wanna say defensive football, very pragmatic football, wasn't very expensive, lots of 1-0 wins, lots of clean sheets.

“And that kind of continued into the Bayern reign as well. So I couldn't tell you that, I would never say that Thomas Tuchel is a negative manager because his start, his first 15 years of management weren't like that.

“But in recent years, he seems to become more pragmatic. And that's why it's gonna be fascinating to me to see how he's gonna fit all this array of talent.

“England have all their best players in the final third of the pitch. How is he gonna fit all of that into perhaps a more pragmatic line-up? That's gonna be interesting.”

Match made in heaven

The role of England manager is a 'dream move' for Thomas Tuchel, believes German football expert Raphael Honigstein.

“He's an avowed Anglophile," Honigstein told talkSPORT.

"He loves English football, loves English players. Of course, worked with Eric Dier, worked with Harry Kane at Bayern, tried to bring in a couple more English players.

“He was forever talking about how much he enjoyed working in England, working in English dressing rooms or a dressing room at Chelsea.

“And just, I think, wanted to come back to England full stop. There was no secret that he had discussions with Man United. I think one or two other clubs were looking at him. I think Spurs were looking at him not so long ago.

“So for him, I think it's a bit of a dream move. As I said, a real passion for English football.

“I think he sees himself as somebody that can take a team that's come close. That's one decisive step further and maybe deliver the trophy and not just become a hero for winning stuff, but becoming a German hero in England. I think that has a special kind of fascination for him.”

A Chelsea seal of approval

Chelsea stars Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah are seemingly happy to see the news of Thomas Tuchel's pending England tenure.

The duo both played under the German during his spell at the Blues, with James part of their Champions League winning side in 2021.

Chalobah, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace, was handed his senior Chelsea debut by Tuchel in their UEFA Super Cup final win over Villarreal.

And it seems as though both would be keen to work with him again should they receive England call-ups in the coming months.

James and Chalobah have both liked an Instagram post from football journalist Fabrizio Romano regarding Tuchel agreeing to become England manager.

The former hasn't played for the Three Lions since March last year whilst the latter is yet to earn a senior cap for the Three Lions.

Isak on the way out?

Alexander Isak has put clubs including Arsenal on red alert as he continues to stall on signing a new contract at Newcastle.

Isak has been in talks over a new deal at St James' Park for several months but there is no obvious sign of progress in negotiations.

talkSPORT has been told the Swedish international is demanding a pay packet that would make him the club's top earner, as well as a release clause, in order to commit his future.

Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Isak, 25, and are expected to push to sign a new No.9 next summer with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko also on their shortlist.

Isak, who hit 21 Premier League goals last season, is under contract at St James’ Park until the summer of 2028.

Premier League Boxing Day fixtures 2024/25 - full festive TV and radio schedule confirmed including Tottenham vs Liverpool and Manchester United vs Newcastle

Description

The Premier League festive schedule is one of the best times of the season for fans as games come thick and fast, and it'll be no different this year.

Boxing Day football has become a much-loved tradition in the top-flight, and there are some excellent fixtures to look forward to this Christmas.

Of course, talkSPORT will be right across the action throughout and we'll have live coverage of ALL TEN Gameweek 18 matches around Boxing Day.

There are a couple of huge games to look forward to this Christmas time and Tottenham's home tie against Liverpool looks an intriguing one.

Last season, Spurs beat nine-man Liverpool 2-1, needing a late own goal from Joel Matip to seal the victory, while the Reds saw a perfectly good goal disallowed wrongly by VAR.

If it is anything like that one, we are in for a treat.

As well as that encounter, there is Aston Villa vs Manchester City, Newcastle vs Villa, and Manchester United against the Toon.

Each Premier League team will play four times in the two-week period over the holidays.

There is no mid-season break this year, meaning January will be just as busy for many Premier League teams, with the FA Cup third round scheduled for the second weekend.

England appoint Tuchel LIVE: German unveiled as Southgate's permanent successor, former Bayern boss set to start in January, ex-Chelsea assistant joins him

Tuchel to speak

So, it's confirmed that Thomas Tuchel is the new England manager.

The German has signed an 18-month contract and will earn between £6-7 million a year.

And you will be able to hear from him live today on talkSPORT at 1:30pm.

He will speak to the media at Wembley along with the FA's CEO Mark Bullingham.

talkSPORT will have Faye Carruthers there asking questions, and we'll have all the best of his press conference right here.

You can also listen via the talkSPORT app, on DAB digital radio, through your smart speaker and on 1089 or 1053 AM.

Doesn't fit the blueprint

Former England captain Stuart Pearce has some concerns over whether Thomas Tuchel would be fully committed to all parts of the Three Lions job.

Pearce doesn't think that Tuchel fits the 'blueprint' of being an England manager like Gareth Southgate did.

Speaking earlier this afternoon, he said: "Firstly I've got no reservations in regard to a foreign manager.

"I didn't when Sven got the job when he was the first foreign manager to come in and take the role I had no reservations in regard to that or no objections.

"What I would say is I think the blueprint of what a manager should look like for England has been what Gareth Southgate's done an individual that cares about the whole process cares about all the age groups not just the senior team and wants to take an interest in benefiting those lower age groups. I don't know whether Tuchel would be that person.

"If I'm being honest with you I think he'd come in, he would do the job and just do the job and I think we've seen a manager that has done wonders over the last eight years. That's my personal opinion."

He added: "If you go in the marketplace to recruit somebody and you feel as though I would give priority to an English manager if you felt as though there was someone with the credentials good enough to do the job. If there isn't then I wouldn't restrict myself.

"I'm talking on behalf of the FA. I wouldn't restrict myself saying right OK we can't have a German but we can have a Frenchman we can't have a Scot I wouldn't do that."

When asked who he'd want instead, Pearce said: "Probably Eddie [Howe]."

All aboard the Tuchel train

Thomas Tuchel has emerged as the leading candidate to become England's new manager after the FA stepped up talks with his camp.

talkSPORT understands that while Tuchel is yet to discuss the terms of a contract, the former Chelsea boss is very keen to replace Gareth Southgate.

There is a hope on both sides that an agreement can be reached swiftly for Tuchel to become only the third foreign appointment in England's history.

As reported yesterday, FA chiefs also sounded out Pep Guardiola after Southgate quit in the summer, but have been given no firm indication the Manchester City boss is willing to accept the job.

In fact, City are remaining hopeful Guardiola will extend his stay at the Etihad beyond the end of the season when his current deal expires.

Neither Newcastle boss Eddie nor Graham Potter have received any formal approach from the FA, leaving the door open for Tuchel.

In the Nic of time

Salford City have announced that former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt is set to step down as Chief Executive Officer.

The Class of 92 member will still remain part of the club as an active shareholder and will still be on the board of directors.

However, not being CEO means he will be taking a less hands-on-role with Salford, and he wants to get re-involved with coaching.

Butt became the club's CEO in October 2022, replacing Gary Neville.

In a statement on the club's website confirming his decision, Butt said: "Whilst I have enjoyed the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief Executive role and discovered a huge amount about the challenges an EFL club faces away from the football pitch, I have recently realised how much I miss the coaching and development of players, and this has increased my desire to get back into that side of the game.

"Over the past few months, there have been several exciting opportunities put forward to me that have put my focus back on coaching and on the grass.

"That being said, I have always wanted to put Salford first, and we now have experienced executives within the senior management team here which means that I can step away from my current duties without any impact on current operations and it will be very much business as usual."

'No Van Dijk'

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart has criticised Micky van de Ven for his performance against Germany in the Nations League last night.

Virgil van Dijk was suspended for the Netherlands and has returned back to Merseyside.

This handed Tottenham centre-back Van de Ven his chance to star for his country at the heart of defence.

However, Ronald Koeman's team lost 1-0, and at half time, Van der Vaart tore into the Netherlands, while also pointing out that Van de Ven is not on the same level as Van Dijk.

He said: I don't easily get ashamed of the Dutch team, but today I did.

"We attribute so many qualities to them, but it's completely wrong. You can analyse it, but everything just goes wrong.

"Then we have doubts about the absence of Virgil van Dijk, of course you miss him. All well and good, Micky van de Ven, but this is no Van Dijk."

Tommy on the radar

talkSPORT understands that formal talks between Thomas Tuchel and the FA over the England role are yet to take place.

The German has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and has made it clear he would be keen on returning to work in England and taking the job.

Tuchel enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea in which he won the Champions League in 2021, and he enjoyed life in Great Britain.

He has been heavily linked with Manchester United in the past, but he's now under consideration to become the next England boss.

Lee Carsley is currently filling in as interim manager, but he made it clear after the Finland match that the Three Lions should be managed by someone with who has won plenty of trophies, and Tuchel fits that bill.

Chelsea and Tottenham handed unusual December kick off times as Blues face hectic festive schedule

Chelsea's clash against Brentford and Tottenham's trip to Southampton in December will kick-off at the unusual time of 7pm.

The Premier League have confirmed the changes to their schedule for December and January, with the busy Christmas period adapted to fit in a number of mouth-watering fixtures.

Chelsea take on west London rivals Brentford on Sunday December 15, with the original date being the day before at 3pm.

This has now been changed to Sunday 15 at the uncommon time of 7pm.

This is due to the Blues' participation in the Europa Conference League the Thursday prior.

However, Enzo Maresca's side have little time to breathe after their match against the Bees.

Another European game, this time against Shamrock Rovers, comes on the following Thursday at Stamford Bridge at 8pm.

Southampton and Tottenham's meeting has also been moved.

Saints will host Spurs at the same time as Chelsea vs Brentford, on Sunday December 15 at 7pm.

This match had again originally been scheduled for Saturday 14 December with a 3pm kick-off time.

The Premier League have detailed the reasoning for this change as it being 'live on TNT Sports'.

Sundays normally see games played at 2pm and 4:30pm.

There have been 8pm kick-offs in the past, too.

Unlike last season, there will not be a Christmas Eve game.

Last term, Chelsea travelled to Wolves on the festive date - but this fixture slot has been slashed this time round.

The final fixture before Christmas day is on Sunday 22 - Tottenham's clash at home to Liverpool, which kicks off at 4:30pm.

Boxing Day, meanwhile, has eight fixtures scheduled in.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s wisdom is finally paying off for in-form Tottenham star

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Dejan Kulusevski has revealed that insight from Cristiano Ronaldo has been the catalyst for his recent upturn in form.

The winger has shined this season having featured in all ten of Tottenham’s games across all competitions.

His inspired form also saw him handed the captain’s armband for Sweden in last month’s Nation’s League clash with Azerbaijan.

And the playmaker was at it again on Monday night, providing an assist in his country’s 3-0 win over Estonia – his fourth consecutive match as skipper.

The 24-year-old offers a greater attacking threat than any other time during his Tottenham career and boasts a higher consistency in his game.

And that is in part due to some words of wisdom from former teammate and five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo.

The pair spent one season together at Juventus before the Portuguese made a return to Old Trafford but before his exit, Ronaldo spoke to the Swede on the subject of understanding your body.

Ronaldo’s longevity in football has been a result of keeping himself in optimal shape by looking after himself both on and off the pitch, something Kulusevski did not appreciate to its fullest, until now.

"I’m getting to know my body,” he told Fotbollskanalen. “When I was younger, I didn’t understand when Ronaldo told me: ‘You will get to know your body’. Because I didn’t know my body then. But now I’m starting to understand my strengths and weaknesses, how I can improve. So I feel like everything is getting easier."

Ronaldo’s guidance now appears to be paying off with the Swede at the top of his game and Spurs on a good run of form before their defeat at Brighton last time out.

Ange Postecoglou’s side mustered up a run of five-straight victories but since suffering defeat in the north London derby on September 15.

Pressed on his current form, Kulusevski said: “I have worked incredibly hard to be able to play at that level. I’m not shocked. I’ve just been waiting for it. Every match has felt good, but that one (in the recent 3-0 win at Manchester United) was perhaps extra good.”

Spurs are back in action on Saturday lunchtime when West Ham visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hoping to get back to winning ways.

Kulusevski and his Spurs teammates came under fire for their collapse at Brighton earlier this month.

Having led 2-0 at half time, Tottenham slipped to a 3-2 defeat which saw Postecoglou’s side slip to ninth in the table.
