Everton close in on signing of forward who stunned Tottenham and made surprise U-turn

Everton are close to agreeing a deal with Marseille for former Sheffield United forward Iliman Ndiaye, talkSPORT understands.

The French giants are hoping to recoup the majority of the £20million they paid Sheffield United last summer.

After four years, with the Blades, including two stunning Championship campaigns, Ndiaye swapped Brammall Lane for the Stade Velodrome last summer.

However, after just three goals and three assists in 19 starts and 11 substitute appearances in Ligue 1, he looks set to return to England.

Ndiaye had great success with the Blades, who he joined from Boreham Wood in 2019.

A breakout campaign in 2022/23 saw him become a mainstay in Paul Heckingbotham's team the next season.

His 14 goals and ten assists in the Championship secured them second place and promotion to the Premier League.

Ndiaye also helped Sheffield United cause an FA Cup shock as his goal gave them a 1-0 fifth round victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

And while devastated to let the player go, the Blades conceded they could do nothing to stop him.

"It's his boyhood club, his dream club," said Heckingbotham at the time.

"That's the battle we were up against. That's the problem. Iliman turned down vast amounts of money last January to stay with us and help us get promoted so it's not about the money."

But that was despite the club reportedly filming a video that announced he was signing a new deal and being given the No.10 shirt, previously worn by club legend Billy Sharp.

Everton seem intent on doing their business early this season.

They have already signed Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa and secured Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds for a second consecutive season.

Ex-Arsenal and Barcelona star Sylvinho's hardest opponent was Tottenham star he needed one month to prepare for

When Albania were drawn in a Euro 2024 group alongside big-hitters Italy, Spain and Croatia, few expected them to have any chance of success.

But their manager, former Brazilian international Sylvinho, knows exactly how to prepare for tough opposition.

Albania have won the hearts of many at Euro 2024 with their first two group performances, having scored the fastest goal in European Championship history in their match against Italy and picking up a famous equaliser five minutes into stoppage time in their 2-2 draw against Croatia.

And although they lost 2-1 to Italy in the end, they have what few thought they would have at this stage in the tournament; a chance of making the knockout stages.

They face a dominant-looking Spain side on Monday 24 June at 8pm, live on talkSPORT 2, as they look for a win which would ensure their progression to the last 16.

Albania have only qualified for one European championship before this one, back in 2016 when they crashed out in the group stages, with the three points from a group stage win over Romania not being enough for them to progress.

This time around, one group win would get them through.

And the man hailed as the secret to Albania's success so far is none other than former Manchester City, Barcelona and Arsenal star Sylvinho.

The former left-back made 65 Premier League appearances during his career, but spent his most successful spell with Barcelona where he won three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies, two Supercopas and a Copa del Rey title.

The 50-year-old is already revered over in Albania, having ended their years of disappointment by guiding them through Euro 2024 qualification in a stylish campaign which saw them lose just once.

He has been awarded the Golden Eagle medal, a prestigious honour in Albania in recognition of what he has already achieved for the nation.

But Sylvinho is not done there.

He is insistent that the odds in Albania's difficult group do not change his task and that he is focused on finding ways around their on-paper disadvantage.

In an interview with The Guardian he admitted: “You have to find a way to reduce the distance between them and us,” he says. “How? You have to work.”

The former defender is no stranger to facing difficult sides, after all.

Sylvinho recalled that there was one former Premier League player that always gave him a lot to reckon with on the pitch while he was at Arsenal.

And naturally, it was a rivalry that reared its head during the north London derby.

“Stephen Carr, Tottenham: strong, good guy, always difficult playing against him," he remembered. "So I’d start thinking: ‘In a month we have this derby and I have to prepare really well, because on my flank they have a really strong player.’”

But the two-time Champions League winner is adamant that now, the focus is on his management skills - not on his exceptional playing past.

"What I did before is important for me as background and I can use it, but I can’t come here and talk to the players on a different level," he said. "You don’t just walk into the dressing room and say: ‘Champions League.’

“A small thing: in training early on, one of the players passed me the ball. ‘Let’s see how the coach kicks it then.’ I picked it up with my hands, which is the first thing we’re told not to do as a child.

"I may have good technique but there was a bigger message: ‘Yes, I’ve done it, but now you have to do it because I can’t any more. It’s not my time, it’s yours.’ Maybe I was important as a player, but no longer. I’ve had to step back, work and educate myself.”

Sylvinho is flanked by some more familiar names on his coaching team, with former Middlesbrough midfielder Doriva and ex-Man City defender Pablo Zabaleta as assistants.

As the second lowest-ranked team at Euro 2024, the expectations for Albania were low heading into this tournament.

But a good manager can do remarkable things for a team.

Having already pulled off some huge shocks in this tournament, Albania and Sylvinho will know they have a special opportunity ahead of them.

Because with low expectation also comes the opportunity to pull of some big shocks indeed.

‘Rubbish on so many levels’ – Tottenham fans respond to new away kit

Description

Not all Tottenham fans are impressed after the club released their newest kit before the start of next season.

Tottenham announced their latest strip on social media in a video spoofed in the style of That '70s Show.

It showed several players including Pedro Porro, Pape Matar Sarr and Radu Dragusin starring in the new away kit, as well as women's team players Martha Thomas, Celin Bizet and Olga Ahtinen.

The new kit from Nike is a throwback design from the 1980s when the light blue stripes were synonymous with Spurs.

However, one bugaboo with the fresh top is the position of the crest, which has been moved into the middle.

But the Nike logo is still in the usual position on the left, sparking some unrest among the fanbase.

One replied with a gif that said: "Oof, it's hideous!"

Another said: "This is rubbish on so many levels."

A third wrote: "Why’s the crest in the middle but the Nike logo isn’t? Looks so awkward."

This fan replied: "This is horrible bruh. Wow."

While another said: "It’s terrible why does Nike hate us this much."

But not everyone disliked the new design, with one fan replying: "I actually really like this shirt.

"Looks better on than in the pictures. Gives me a mix of 84/92 vibes."

Tottenham's home kit ahead of the 2024/25 season has already been released, along with the help from a Gavin and Stacey star, which has black sleeves and the usual white front from Nike.

The away kit is usually the chance to bring some colour to the Spurs kits, with anything other than white for the home strip being close to sacrilege.

Also appearing in the promo video is digital creator and massive Tottenham fan Danny Aarons, who said: "As a Spurs fan, I love it when we go for classic inspiration in our kits.

"I remember seeing the blue stripe on the away kit when I was a kid, and it’s so good to see the design updated for today.

"This is iconic Spurs away for me – and I can’t wait to see it out on the pitch next season.”

Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal are among the clubs who have been offered the chance to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, talkSPORT understands.

Intermediaries working on behalf of David are keen to bring the Canada international to the Premier League.

It is thought David would cost just £30million as he enters the final year of his contract.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a fine 2023/24 season where he banged in 26 goals in all competitions, with 19 coming in Ligue 1 to fire Lille to fourth spot.

Since joining the French side in 2020, David has found the back of the net 84 times from 183 matches.

He helped Lille win the top-flight title in his opening campaign after banging in 13 Ligue 1 goals.

And he has just been as prolific on the international stage with Canada, where he is just three goals shy of equalling teammate Cyle Larin's record of 29 strikes.

David started in Canada's opening match against Argentina to kick off the 2024 Copa America, but couldn't stop his side from losing 2-0.

United, Arsenal and Tottenham could all bolster their frontline this summer to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund, Kai Havertz and Richarlison respectively.

The Red Devils and the Gunners were dealt a major blow when Slovenia starlet Benjamin Sesko snubbed interest to sign a new deal at RB Leipzig.

Erik ten Hag is also believed to be keen on Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee as they weigh up activating his £34m release clause.

As for Arsenal, Napoli marksman Victor Osimhen and Juventus centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic have emerged as possible alternatives to Sesko.

Tottenham meanwhile are believed to have been offered the chance to bring ex-Chelsea star Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League.

talkSPORT reported last week how Spurs could wrap up a deal to sign the Roma man for just £26m following an injury-hit campaign in Italy.

Description

Nabil Bentaleb has been admitted to hospital due to an illness, his club Lille has confirmed.

The midfielder, formerly of Tottenham, made 34 appearances for the French club this season.

It's not clear what the nature of Bentaleb's illness is.

However, Lille revealed in a statement on Wednesday that he fell ill on Tuesday night and has now been hospitalised as a result.

"LOSC informs that Nabil Bentaleb suffered from illness on the evening of Tuesday June 18," they said.

"The player was immediately taken into care and sent to Lille University Hospital for hospitalisation.

"LOSC accompanies Nabil as closely as possible during this ordeal and gives him all its support. The club also calls for greater respect for the private life of its player."

His former club Tottenham also sent a message of support.

They wrote on X: "We’re sending you all our love and best wishes, Nabil. Everyone at the Club is with you."

Bentaleb has 43 caps for Algeria and used to be part of the youth setup at Lille before moving to the Spurs academy in 2012.

The 29-year-old made his senior debut for the north London side the following year as he progressed into the first-team.

He went on to feature 66 times for Spurs on total before signing for Schalke permanently in 2017 following a season-long loan.

Bentaleb scored 19 goals in 107 appearances for the German side and briefly returned to the Premier League with a short loan spell at Newcastle in 2020.

Two years later, he left Schalke and moved to Ligue 1 with Angers for one season before completing his switch to Lille last summer.

Jamie O'Hara and Carlton Cole were in fits of laughter as the former Spurs midfielder reflected on where teammate Luka Modric is in his career.

Modric, fresh from collecting his sixth Champions League winners medal, is also currently starring at Euro 2024, captaining Croatia as they look to win the tournament for the first time in their history.

The European Championship trophy is one of the only pieces of silverware that has evaded the 38-year-old during his career, who rose to prominence in the Premier League when he joined Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008.

There, he played alongside Rafael van der Vaart, Gareth Bale as well as O'Hara, who is at talkSPORT where he hosts the Sports Bar having hung up his boots in 2020.

Speaking about his former teammate, he laughed: “He’s playing in the Euros with six Champions Leagues and I’m sat here on the Sports Bar!"

Sitting alongside him was former West Ham striker Carlton Cole, who joked: “The contrast in football careers, eh?”

“It’s crazy, it’s crazy," O’Hara smiled.

The two actually got onto the subject of Modric when remincising about beautiful goals or the ones scored from outside the area given the volume that have flown in at the Euros.

Rewind to August 2009 and Tottenham travelled to West Ham's Upton Park for a London derby in the Premier League - and O’Hara, Cole and Modric were all involved in the clash.

Cole opened the scoring on the day, scoring a mesmerising left-footed volley from outside the box.

But he soon went from hero to zero, giving the ball away to ex-Hammer Jermain Defoe who pounced on the opportunity and sparked the comeback.

Aaron Lennon found the net too with just over 10 minutes to go, helping Spurs to seal a 2-1 win in the Hammers' back yard.

But despite his error in the game, Cole was still happy to bring it up on the Sports Bar in front of his former opponent.

"It was a great goal!” he said. “I think it was [Sebastien] Bassong that tried to challenge me in the air. Then I think Ledley King tried to challenge me, I’ve used him as a shield and then bosh, left foot from outside the box!"

O’Hara, who came at the end of the derby, said: “I think I was involved in that game - from the bench! I was spectating as usual!”

Then he reminded Cole that he came on for Modric and that Spurs actually won.

“And what are you doing now?” he hit back.

Who really wants to captain their country at the Euros anyway, Jamie? talkSPORT Towers is much better...

Description

Oxford City have announced one of the stars of TV's Ted Lasso as their new manager - but this is no gimmick.

Former Tottenham youngster Sam Cox, who played alongside Harry Kane in their youth team, has got all the right credentials.

Cox arrives at the National League North side having kept Wealdstone in the fifth tier of English football last season as their interim boss.

The 33-year-old previously enjoyed a playing career that started at alongside England captain Kane at youth level, before spells with several non-league sides, including Wealdstone and Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Cox has also featured for the Guyana national team but has now ventured into the world of management with his UEFA A coaching license.

"I’m delighted to get the deal over the line," he told Oxford City upon his arrival. My first impressions of this football club are tremendous.

"There’s some really good people around the place and after years of playing against Oxford, I know how well run the club is.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going, starting the season and trying to take this football club to where it deserves and needs to be.”

Cox, who has also starred in the hit football show Ted Lasso as the fictional West Ham player 'Armando', has also coached at the Spurs academy.

But he is now tasked with taking Oxford City back to the National League following their relegation last season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said it was an opportunity he 'couldn't turn down' and revealed that part of the interview process took place outside the country after being away with Guyana on international duty.

"I was actually in Barbados at the time. The Wi-Fi wasn't the best in the hotel but we got the interview done.

"I had the first interview, obviously getting to meet Justin [Merritt, Oxford City owner] and some of the guys on that Zoom call.

"I got invited back for a second interview the week after, had to deliver a presentation, my methodology and philosophy of where I'd like to take the club and push forward.

"And yeah, came to a decision a couple of days afterwards and gave me the news. Just absolutely buzzing to get going now, it's a great football club, really excited to push forward."

North London derby early for Tottenham but December brings Chelsea and Liverpool fixtures

North London derby early for Tottenham but December brings Chelsea and Liverpool fixtures... - talkSPORT
Description

Tottenham face a winter of discontent in December.

In addition to Chelsea and Liverpool games, Spurs travel to Bournemouth, Southampton and Notttingham Forest before seeing the month out against Wolves.

The first north London derby of the season sees them welcome Arsenal early in September before heading to the Emirates on 14 January. Before that, though, is Newcastle ten days before.

Drawing 2-2 to Brentford on the opening weekend of last season, Tottenham enjoyed an electric start as they went 10 games unbeaten under manager Ange Postecoglu.

As a result, Spurs were top of the Premier League with 26 points from 30 available as the campaign moved into November.

While that stunning form dropped off, Postecoglou's side did go on to secure a fifth-place finish to earn Europa League football this term.

Having been pipped to fourth by Aston Villa, the north London side will be hoping to go one better this time around and secure Champions League football.

DECEMBER FIXTURES

To address complaints about congested fixture schedules that have dominated conversations in previous seasons, the Premier League say arrangements will be made to allow more rest time over three of the festive match rounds.

No club will play within 60 hours of another match and there will be no fixture on 24 December.

The mid-season break has also been removed from the calendar to allow a mid-August start date for the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich face the post-Jurgen Klopp Liverpool on their first day back in the Premier League.

The newly-promoted side are back in the top tier for the first time in 22 years and will welcome the Merseyside giants - who have will have a new manager in Arne Slot - to Portman Road in the first Saturday lunchtime kick-off on 17 August.

Manchester United, meanwhile, begin the season on Friday 16 August against Fulham at Old Trafford a week after playing rivals City in the Community Shield.

Last season's runners-up Arsenal start at home against Wolves on Saturday 17 August at 3pm, with Aston Villa, in their debut season in the Champions League, travelling to West Ham in the evening for the 5:30pm kick-off.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, meanwhile, hosts Manchester City on Sunday 18 August in his first competitive game since replacing Mauricio Pochettino. It will be a reunion for the two given Maresca was formerly Pep Guardiola's assistant.

Maresca left his role at City to join Leicester in 2023 just days after winning the Champions League.

He guided the Foxes back into the Premier League before leaving earlier this summer to become Chelsea manager, and formerly takes up his role on 1 July.

Elsewhere, newly-promoted Southampton begin their season back in the big time by travelling to Newcastle, Everton start their campaign against Brighton and Brentford host Crystal Palace.

Leicester will host Tottenham in the first Monday Night Football of the season.

To address the congested schedule across Christmas and New Year, arrangements will be made to allow more rest time over three of the festive match rounds. No club will play within 60 hours of another match and there will be no fixture on 24 December.

The mid-season break has also been removed from the calendar to allow a mid-August start date for the Premier League, with the final day of the season being 25 May, 2025.

Premier League opening day fixtures

Chelsea and Man United are something of opening day specialists having won 62.5 per cent of their first games (P33, W20). Guardiola, though, has won 87.5 per cent of his opening day games, with Spurs the only team to beat him.

Slot will hope to still have Mohamed Salah in his side given that he has scored in six of his last seven openers for Liverpool and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has seven goals across his games on the first day of the season.

Only Salah, Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney have scored eight.

talkSPORT will be the home of Premier League football on the radio once again in 2024/25. We will bring you more than 120 top-flight commentaries across our network, starting with four games on the opening weekend including Manchester United vs Fulham and Ipswich vs Liverpool
