Tottenham can land surprise reunion as club 'monitor' star after Archie Gray transfer

Tottenham are reportedly interested in bringing Kyle Walker-Peters back to the club after sealing the signing of Archie Gray from Leeds. Daniel Levy pulled off a significant coup this week by agreeing a £35million transfer for 18-year-old midfielder, with Joe Rodon heading to Elland Road as part of the deal.

But the north London club seemingly aren’t done there this summer, as Ange Postecoglou continues his squad overhaul.

And now Walker-Peters has been linked with a return, having spent five years at the club before leaving for Southampton in 2020.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have been monitoring the 27-year-old as they scour the market for a back-up option to current right-back Pedro Porro. They made £12million from the sale of the two-cap England international four years ago, and would not have to break the bank to re-sign him this summer.

Walker-Peters impressed under Russell Martin as Southampton were promoted to the Premier League last season, beating Leeds 1-0 in the Championship play-off final. He made 43 league appearances, and appeared to relish the possession based style of his manager.

The defender was duly named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year at the end of the campaign. But he only has one year left on his current deal, meaning Martin risks losing him on a free next summer.

Despite signing senior forms at Tottenham in 2015, Walker-Peters only made 24 senior appearances for the club before leaving for St Mary’s. And he rose to prominence in a 5-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth in December 2018, becoming the youngest player to notch three assists in the top flight since Jermaine Pennant.

Tottenham’s pursuit could yet be simplified, with Southampton themselves linked to a potential replacement. The club have been touted to move for AZ Alkmaar and Japan right-back Yukinari Sugawara, a development which would open the door for their now Premier League rivals.

But Levy and co are likely to face competition. West Ham have also reportedly been tracking Walker-Peters, and are said to be prepared to offer Flynn Downes in an exchange deal.

The player himself will be looking to reignite his England career, having initially been called up by Gareth Southgate back in 2022. He made his senior debut in a 2–1 victory against Switzerland, but failed to win a place for the World Cup in Qatar later that year.

But with former team-mate Kyle Walker now 34, and Trent Alexander-Arnold having shifted into midfield, there could soon be an opening for the Southampton man. Prior to his senior bow, he played in the under-17 World Cup and then represented the Three Lions at every age grade level from under-18 to under-21.

Dele Alli has been spotted working hard in training as fans clamour for his long-anticipated return to professional football. The former Tottenham Hotspur star is technically without a club after his contract with Everton ran out this summer - and Alli is working hard in order to secure a contract elsewhere.

The athlete had undergone surgery at the beginning of the year to fix a chronic groin issue and is now stepping up his recovery game so he can return at his best.

Alli, who has won 37 caps for England, the last of which came in 2019, has been posting regular updates on his social media to let fans know how his recovery plan is going and all the work he is putting in to return to the Premier League.

In a new video published by his coach under the handle @jazzi.fc, Alli can be seen working hard on the pitch, taking part in sprinting, passing, shooting and agility drills alongside other athletes. The post was captioned: "We working @dele".

The 28-year-old appeared to be in good shape as he nailed the training drills with relative ease in the exciting footage. And fans have filled the comments with their wishes for Alli to return to football at his best after a nightmare couple of years at Besiktas and Everton.

One person wrote: "Can't wait to see him back on the pitch." Another added: "Prem ain't ready for Dele's comeback." A third wrote: "Can't wait to see you, my favourite player." Fans have even touted Alli to return to Spurs following his 2022 transfer to Everton.

One person asked: "Come on @spursofficial we need him now." Another said: "Well done Dele, back to spurs soon" alongside three loveheart emojis.

According to TransferMarkt, Alli is currently without a club following the end of his contract at Everton - but the club is reportedly open to negotiating a new deal with the former England star in the future.

The club confirmed in May Alli wouldn't be given a new deal but will remain at the club while he continues his recovery. Director of football Kevin Thelwell said: “Dele’s contract is coming to an end, but our medical team will continue to support him while he completes the intensive rehabilitation programme he is currently undergoing following the operation he had earlier this year.

"Both Sean Dyche and I agree it is important we ensure Dele’s rehabilitation is not impacted by his contract situation at such a critical point in his recovery.”

Tottenham exodus sees nine players go as Ange Postecoglou makes big changes - Express
Description

Ange Postecoglou is shaking up his Tottenham Hotspur squad by allowing nine players to leave the club after their contracts expired. Since the Australian took over as manager, several key figures have been sidelined and numerous fringe players have now exited the north London club.

Spurs have already splashed the cash this summer, shelling out £35million for Leeds United prodigy Archie Gray. Their business looks to be far from over as they have made a lot of space in their squad.

Among those who have left are a former England international, Tottenham's record signing, and several young talents who failed to fulfil their potential at the club. Many of these departures were confirmed well before their contracts officially ended in June.

Eric Dier was one of the first to be informed that his contract would not be renewed, reports the Mirror. The England centre-back moved to Bayern Munich on loan in January under Thomas Tuchel and had a successful stint with the German side.

His move to the Allianz Arena was made permanent with a contract until 2025, marking his departure for good alongside Ivan Perisic, who returned to Croatia with Hajduk Split. Like Dier, Perisic's loan move became permanent as soon as his contract with Spurs expired.

Two promising English talents have also exited the club, with Japhet Tanganga making a permanent move to Millwall following a successful loan stint, and Ryan Sessegnon, who has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, leaving.

Tottenham's record signing, Tanguy Ndombele, who cost the club £63million, has also ended his time at Spurs after several unsuccessful loan spells. The French midfielder joined in 2019 but was loaned out to Lyon, Napoli, and Galatasaray after failing to make an impact on the first team.

He is reportedly set to join OGC Nice on a free transfer. Meanwhile, young defender Charlie Sayers, scholar Billy Heaps, and U18 squad members Kieran Morgan and Han Willhoft-King are the other departures, having failed to break into the first team.

Spurs have made significant changes and are still open to selling others, potentially paving the way for more summer signings as Postecoglou seeks success.

Chris Packham blasts 'bloated monster' Premier League over Tottenham plans

Renowned Springwatch presenter Chris Packham has slammed Tottenham Hotspur chiefs for what he decries as "absolutely bonkers" designs on a section of Whitewebbs Park in Enfield, North London, which may soon morph into training grounds for a women's football academy.

Spurs have eyed up land within the park to mould it into an elite hub for their women's team. In stark contradiction, Packham asserts: "They'll be no football on a dead planet....what we are up against is the bloated monster that is the football Premier League with its unfortunate economic might. This is another case of David versus Goliath."

Boasting habitats for over 80 bird species plus an array of wildlife including bats, great crested newts, badgers, and butterflies, the park has become a contentious battleground. After local resident Sean Wilkinson took Spurs to court in an attempt to halt their plans and lost, he is now frantically mustering £20,000 to fund an appeal.

Packham throws his weight behind this effort, scathingly commenting, "What's the score at the moment? Tottenham: 1, Planet; Nil. That's it isn't it."

He doesn't stop there, questioning the necessity of such a development by saying, "If they've done without the astro turf and pitches up until this point then why do they need it there now? We are going to lose so much valuable space for what are essentially football pitches. We are losing that acid rich grassland to a small group of people behind fences who kick a ball around. It's absolutely nonsensical.", reports the Mirror.

He lamented the current climate crisis gripping the globe, emphasising the importance of preserving urban greenery for mental well-being.

Chris remarked: "This is at a time where we are conscious of the fact we need to protect every last square of greenery, particularly in cities where it has multiple values. It's not just about nature conservation, it's about people's mental health and access to nature for people who are living in a crowded urban environment. It's absolutely bonkers and Spurs are totally disconnected from reality."

Chris also highlighted the massive turnout for his recent London march, Restore Nature Now, which saw over 100,000 supporters rallying for the cause.

He asserted: "Frankly, nature needs to come first. If they need new pitches, put them somewhere where it doesn't matter. Whitewebbs Park matters. So, you can't have it. That's the point we should be at. The reality is that we can't afford to lose anymore green spaces in our cities, they keep the cities cool. You only need a map to look at the world, to see that many parts of it are cooking."

Arne Slot dealt Liverpool transfer setback as Tottenham land double whammy on Prem rivals

Tottenham appear to have dealt a summer transfer blow to both Liverpool and Brentford after agreeing a fee for Leeds youngster Archie Gray. The highly rated 18-year-old is expected to sign a long-term deal with the north London club, having excelled in the Championship last season and playing 52 matches in all competitions.

The fee is reportedly in the region of £40million, with the England Under-21 player having proven to be adept in both central midfield and at right back.

Gray, great-nephew of Leeds legend Eddie, had been heavily linked with a move to Brentford, with Daniel Levy seemingly scuppering his club’s Premier League rivals at the 11th hour.

The 18-year-old even begun the process of a medical with the Bees, but they seemingly could not come to an agreement with Leeds over the structure of their bid. And the development is now set to have a knock-on effect for new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.

The Merseyside side club have been expected to move for another Leeds star in Crysencio Summerville, who top scored for the club with 21 goals last season. And he was duly named the Championship Player of the Season at the 2024 EFL Awards.

But the impending sale of Gray will ease concerns over profit and sustainability rules, with the fee set to ensure the club are compliant with regulations. Therefore the pressure is off to make big money sales during the summer transfer window.

It also means that manager Daniel Farke is likely to try and block the departure of another key man, as he bids to bounce back from missing out on promotion last season. Leeds were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the play-off final in May, but will be expected to challenge strongly to go up again in 2024/25.

The Dutch Under-21 international is well known at Anfield, having scored a dramatic late winner when Leeds won there in October 2022. He previously spent two years at Feyenoord, but left for England in 2020, a year before Slot took over.

The 45-year-old is still waiting to make his first summer signing since replacing Jurgen Klopp. And with Luis Diaz heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, Summerville could be viewed as an ideal replacement.

“To play in the Champions League would be great, it would be massive. Of course, we can do that at Leeds. If you believe, you can achieve everything.

Tottenham 'being used for Real Madrid transfer' as wonderkid makes £40m U-turn

Tottenham icon Chris Waddle believes Archie Gray is using their interest in his services as a springboard for a future move to Real Madrid. The north Londoners have reportedly hijacked Brentford's move for Gray, who enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign with Leeds United last season.

Last week, it was reported that Brentford made a £40million bid for Gray and went as far as arranging a medical. However, their offer was rejected by Leeds and Tottenham are now believed to be in pole position, with discussions said to be ongoing.

Waddle believes Gray will use his potential move to Tottenham as a platform to join Real Madrid in the future, with the 18-year-old tipped to follow in the footsteps of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.

"He’s an ideal Tottenham project," Waddle told Genting. "Tottenham have a history of buying young players and giving them an opportunity. We’ve seen Tottenham make some very canny moves in the transfer market over the years with younger players.

"They can obviously see the potential that’s there, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Gray followed the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric by joining Real Madrid for a massive fee if he lives up to his potential. Tottenham can obviously see his potential.

"He was probably the pick of the Championship players in terms of his age and ability. I think he could easily step up to the level of the Premier League. Whether he gets straight into the Tottenham team is a different question.

"I’m sure they will have a precise development plan for him which could see him join another Premier League club on loan. He’d be a good signing for Tottenham Hotspur because he’s only going to get better."

Waddle added that he is expecting Gray to shine under Ange Postecoglou, with his versatility a major plus point. He played at right-back for the vast majority of last season despite being a natural midfielder, winning the Championship Young Player of the Year award in the process.

"I’ve seen enough of Archie Gray to say that he is a very good player," said Waddle. "He’s a versatile player that can perform in a number of roles: midfield, full-back. That tells you two things about him: his manager trusts him to perform in numerous roles and he has the intelligence to do it.

"That’s rare for a player of 18 years old. He was ever-present in that Leeds United team last season, so again, that’s a good sign. His best role is in central midfield and I think that’s where he prefers to play."

Spurs already know Southgate's thoughts as 'huge deal advances'

Description

England boss Gareth Southgate has already tipped Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray for a huge future - and that's good news for Tottenham as they edge closer to bringing the 18-year-old to north London. The Durham-born teenager had an exceptional season for Leeds in The Championship across 2023/24 - making 44 appearances under Daniel Farke.

But he has also impressed for England's U21 side - scoring a goal against Azerbaijan in his debut earlier this year. And Gray's efforts haven't gone unnoticed by Southgate, who in May praised the star's work ethic for his club and hinted at his future inclusion in senior England squads.

While announcing the Euro 2024 squad last month, he said: "There are some players with the Under-21s who are doing exceptionally well, especially in midfield. The likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Harvey Elliott, Rico [Lewis] was with us last time, Archie Gray at Leeds is doing very, very well I have to say, so there are a number of players in that group we could move in."

After a third-place finish in the Championship, Leeds would be beaten by Southampton in Wembley's Play-Off final - but a number of Premier League managers hope that another year in the second tier could sway Gray to make a move. The Peacocks have reportedly turned down a £40million offer from Brentford for the midfielder, despite allowing him to travel for a medical at the weekend.

And now, Spurs are said to have entered talks with the club for Gray's signature after monitoring the player for months. The highly-rated player is set to hold discussions with Ange Postecoglu on Sunday, as the Spurs manager looks to close in on the exciting deal.

While Chelsea and Arsenal are also linked with the teenage talent, The Athletic claim that Gray favours a move to Tottenham, and with Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe previously noting that the club may have to cash in on the midfielder, a deal could be imminent.

He said: "If I can paint the big picture for you, there are certain things that we need to do, and we will make sure we are fully compliant with PSR, as we always have been. And there are certain trade-offs that we have to make and so we'll have to get to the drawing board and figure out which moves we have to make sure that we are compliant.

"It's too early to say. Obviously Archie is a tremendous player, as are all of the players who put in so much effort for us, but you know, every season brings change and so I can't yet comment on it, but we'll see what happens."

Gray would help strengthen the heart of midfield at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially with Tanguy Ndombele having his contract mutually terminated by the club. Should they wish to sign the talented player, they will have to meet Leeds' reported £30m asking price.

Tottenham 'hijack £35m deal' for Leeds wonderkid as Chelsea and Brentford left fuming

Leeds United have reportedly rejected a £40million bid from Brentford for talented midfielder Archie Gray, despite allowing the teenager to travel for a medical on Saturday. And now Tottenham Hotspur are said to have entered talks and expect a deal to be struck, having monitored his situation for months.

Gray appeared set to complete a switch to Brentford after agreeing personal terms and travelling to London for medical tests.

But the Championship club's decision to play hardball looked likely to benefit Chelsea and Spurs, also linked with a swoop for his services this summer.

And The Athletic claim that Leeds rejected the Bees' opening offer worth in the region of £35m on Sunday morning.

Gray is now reportedly leaning towards a transfer to Tottenham, with discussions between the two clubs underway and drawing optimism of a positive conclusion.

The highly-rated 18-year-old is due to hold talks with Spurs on Sunday as Ange Postecoglou, currently in Germany working as a Euro 2024 pundit for ITV, closes in on an exciting coup.

Tottenham are believed to have attempted to lure Gray to north London before he signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club at the age of 17.

The England U21 looks destined to make a step up now, though, after Leeds failed to secure instant promotion back to the Premier League last season.

Leeds' 1-0 defeat against Southampton in the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium has landed the club in danger of breaching Profitability and Sustainability regulations.

They have subsequently been forced to raise funds through offloading members of Daniel Farke's talented squad and look set to part ways with Gray reluctantly.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has previously admitted the club may have to cash in on their popular No. 22.

Chelsea 'join Tottenham in Archie Gray transfer race' as Leeds set price

Chelsea have reportedly joined Tottenham in the race to sign Leeds starlet Archie Gray this summer. The versatile England Under-21 midfielder has many admirers in the Premier League but will not be signed on the cheap.

Gray excelled in a fantastic breakthrough campaign at Leeds last season. He made 52 appearances across all competitions, including all three of the club’s Championship play-off matches.

The 18-year-old spent a large part of the campaign at right-back after earning the trust of head coach Daniel Farke. That is despite his more natural position being in central midfield. Top-flight teams are widely understood to admire the youngster’s versatility.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea have an interest in Gray. Premier League rivals Spurs have also been linked this summer, while Liverpool are known to have kept tabs on the player over the course of the season.

The report claims that while Chelsea are yet to make a formal approach for Gray, Leeds will demand an eye-watering £30m fee for their academy graduate. The Whites have financial issues to contend with after failing to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Other Leeds players, including winger Crysencio Summerville, have also been linked with departures from Elland Road. Chelsea have been tenuously linked with Summerville but are expected to look at other forward targets, while teenage striker Marc Guiu will soon arrive from Barcelona.

The Blues are also reportedly interested in Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The 25-year-old shone under new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca with the Championship winners last term.

Interest in Gray and Dewsbury-Hall will intensify speculation over the future of vice-captain Conor Gallagher. Chelsea may be at risk of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations and Gallagher’s potential departure, as an academy graduate, would represent pure profit on the club’s books.

The 24-year-old, who is currently with England at Euro 2024, has reported interest from Spurs and also Aston Villa. Chelsea are widely reported to be asking for £50m for Gallagher, with interested clubs unwilling to pay such a fee.

Gallagher was one of Chelsea’s best performers last season and wore the captain’s armband in the injury absence of Reece James. He played in 50 matches and made 16 direct goal contributions.

Chelsea’s only confirmed arrival this summer is that of Tosin Adarabioyo, with Brazilian wonderkid Estevao Willian also joining when he turns 18. Adarabioyo has arrived on a free transfer after leaving the Blues’ west London rivals Fulham.
