Spurs 2-2 Man City (1 Feb, 2026) Game Analysis - ESPN
Description

A rip-roaring second-half from Tottenham saw them fight back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester City and boost fierce rivals Arsenal's title bid.

City looked set to cruise to another victory after first-half goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo put Pep Guardiola's men in control.

Spurs had been booed off at half-time, but a controversial 53rd-minute own-goal by Marc Guéhi gave Thomas Frank's misfiring team a lifeline before Dominic Solanke's sensational back heel levelled the scores after 73 minutes.

There was still time for either team to find a winner, but the spoils were shared and Manchester City are now six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

It was a timely comeback for under-fire Frank, who has struggled to win over the Spurs fanbase and although this made it only two wins in 15 league fixtures, it prevented another defeat at home.

Arsenal's 4-0 win at Leeds on Saturday increased the pressure on City, but they faced a depleted Tottenham with 11 players absent, including central defender Micky van de Ven.

It meant Radu Dragusin was handed a first start in 12 months following his recovery from a serious knee injury and within 11 minutes the home side were behind.

Not long after Semenyo had tested Guglielmo Vicario, City won the ball back from Yves Bissouma and within seconds Erling Haaland had released Cherki, who worked a yard of space on Dragusin and rifled into the bottom corner.

It was too simple from a Spurs point of view, but the dream start for Guardiola's men and they could have made it 2-0 seven minutes later only for Haaland to lob the ball over the crossbar.

Home fans were already restless when Cherki's twinkle-toes got him into the area and past a hapless Dragusin tackle, but his firm 23rd-minute effort was brilliantly tipped wide by Vicario even though a goal-kick was awarded.

Frank's team did finally show some attacking intent when Solanke teed up Xavi Simons but his shot was blocked, and yet a minute before half-time City made it 2-0.

Dragusin's chipped pass was intercepted by Rodri, who picked out Bernardo Silva and he teed up Semenyo to curl home.

Boos followed at the break and Frank was now without captain Cristian Romero with Pape Sarr introduced, but in a 4-2-3-1 system, Tottenham improved.

Conor Gallagher fired over before Destiny Udogie was superbly thwarted by fellow Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma.

A Spurs goal was coming and it arrived in controversial circumstances in the 53rd minute when Simons produced a wonderful pass into Solanke, who turned Abdukodir Khusanov and kicked through the back of Guehi's leg to make it 2-1.

VAR checked for offside and a foul, but Guehi's own-goal stood and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was alive as Guardiola received a booking from referee Robert Jones.

Frank sensed the momentum with attackers Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel introduced in the 68th minute and three minutes later Solanke caused the stadium to erupt.

Gallagher burst forward down the right and crossed into the penalty area where Solanke produced a sensational back heel finish over the scrambling Donnarumma to make it 2-2.

It was all Spurs now as Simons played in Odobert, but Donnarumma made a vital save before Simons let fly and forced a sprawling save from the City goalkeeper.

Lucas Paquetá ignored Tottenham, Chelsea 'calls' to join Flamengo - ESPN
Description

Lucas Paquetá has said he ignored calls from Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea before joining Flamengo back in his native Brazil.

Paquetá signed for Flamengo on Thursday for £35.8 million ($49.4m), making him the most expensive player ever signed by a Brazilian club.

The 28-year-old, who had 18 months remaining on his contract at West Ham United, told Flamengo TV that two of his former side's London rivals were interested -- but his heart was set on Flamengo.

"Tottenham called, Chelsea called, and the funny thing is that Tata (his agent) called all excited and said: 'Chelsea's calling, they're gonna make an offer.'

"I replied: 'Okay, but what about Flamengo?' He said: 'Are you serious?'

"I said: 'Yeah, I don't want to know about that. I want to hear about Flamengo,' and that's how it all turned out."

Thomas Frank defends Tottenham spending: 'Not Football Manager'

Thomas Frank defends Tottenham spending: 'Not Football Manager' - ESPN
Description

Thomas Frank talked up the "big commitment" of Tottenham's owners despite a quiet January and insisted transfers were not as easy as on the video game Football Manager after they missed out on Antoine Semenyo.

Spurs will face Semenyo on Sunday when Manchester City visit and Frank revealed the ex-Bournemouth attacker had been a big target for this winter transfer window before he decided to join Pep Guardiola's title-chasing side.

With only days of the window left, Tottenham have signed Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid and teenage Brazilian left-back Souza, but sold last season's leading scorer Brennan Johnson and lost Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall to serious injuries in January.

It led Frank to acknowledge his current squad of players to choose from was weaker than at the start of this month, but he rejected any notion that majority owners ENIC -- run by the Lewis family Trust -- were not committed to this project with Spurs down in 14th in the Premier League table.

Ahead of a daunting run of fixtures in February, which begins with the visit of City, Frank said: "I think we lost, I can't remember, six or seven players inside three weeks in January? That's crazy.

"There were definitely too many, so yeah of course [the squad] it's weaker than we started the first of January.

"I can promise that the Lewis family is super committed to this project. They want to do everything and I would go against my rule, hopefully only once, that there's no doubt it's clear that the club wants to sign Semenyo.

"They did everything. I think that's a clear signal that the Lewis family is very committed.

"That's a big signing with finances and all that, so it's aligned with that. That's the quality players we are looking for to improve the squad."

It was put to Frank that supporters want more actions than words, with a protest planned by fan group 'Change for Tottenham' before and during Sunday's visit of City with the slogan 'it's time to act' after largely quiet business this month.

Frank countered: "The fans just want the best for the club. Just like I want [the best], the owners, the staff, the players, everyone wants the best for the club, but I also think it's fair to say that the transfer window is not Football Manager unfortunately. It is not.

"It would be a lot easier, but also a little bit more boring. We would not have as many good stories to talk about.

"In the last 30 days, you couldn't go to work basically because there is nothing to write about or talk about. So, it is very difficult the transfer market. It's an art, it's a craftsmanship."

TRENDING RUMORS

- Tuttosport has offered an update on Juventus' efforts to sign a striker now it is clear that a deal for Randal Kolo Muani, who is on loan at Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain, looks to be impossible. Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee is reported to be their top target, with a loan being the most likely option Al Nassr's Jhon Durán, 22, is also being considered, despite being on loan at Fenerbahce, while 38-year-old Karim Benzema is also tempting Juve after ESPN sources stated that the 38-year-old felt "disrespected" by Al Ittihad's offer to extend his contract.

- Tottenham are in the market for a new winger and have made contact over former Arsenal star Serge Gnabry, who is now at Bayern Munich, according to Bild. Spurs need a forward to replace Brennan Johnson, who joined Crystal Palace at the start of the window, and Mohammed Kudus, who is out until April through injury. The club are also tracking Al Ittihad winger Moussa Diaby, as reported by The Independent and are one of eight clubs considering a move for Raheem Sterling after the former Chelsea and Arsenal winger became a free agent, as reported by The Daily Mail.

- Manchester United sent scouts to watch Eintracht Frankfurt left back Nathaniel Brown during the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday, says TEAMtalk. Brown, 22, has been on the radar of Arsenal and Manchester City in recent months but United have now entered the race and are preparing a £40 million offer to sign the Germany international. Now that Ruben Amorim's back three has been dispensed with, United are keen to sign a regular fullback, rather than a wingback.

- United won't move for Chelsea attacking midfielder Cole Palmer in the summer, according to The Daily Mirror, which adds that the club's stance has been taken due to their priority being the signing of a holding midfielder to replace Casemiro. Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba are on the Red Devils' radar, but they are aware that each of the trio would be expensive. It would take a fee of over £100 million and wages around £250,000-per-week to sign Palmer.

- AC Milan have made progress in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta having reached an agreement worth €30 million, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport. Though Nottingham Forest remain determined to sign the 28-year-old. This comes after The Athletic reported that the Eagles were close to reaching a verbal agreement over a £50 million move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, adding that the deal could pave the way for Mateta to leave Selhurst Park.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN's Sam Tighe explores some late moves for Tottenham.

On paper, this Spurs squad isn't actually short of wingers, or players who can play wide. The problem is the injuries are mounting: Kudus is reportedly out until April, Richarlison is constantly in and out, Dejan Kulusevski hasn't been seen since last May and Brennan Johnson departed for Crystal Palace earlier in the month. It's squeezing the squad.

Thomas Frank's tactical approach relies heavily on wing play and crossing, so this is a big problem 00 and it's no wonder he's seemingly requested reinforcements late this month.

Gnabry is a curious link, given his previous Arsenal affiliation, the fact he once tweeted "North London is red" after scoring four against Spurs, and he's part of a Bayern Munich squad who could win a treble.

Diaby, formerly of Aston Villa, could be a handy solution if he wants to depart Saudi Arabia and the price is right. But Sterling is a complete gamble. How good is he in 2026? No one knows. The last time we saw him play, Kulusevski was fit!

TRENDING RUMORS

- Tottenham Hotspur could try to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta if Randal Kolo Muani ends up at Juventus this month, the Daily Mail reports. The Serie A giants have stepped up their pursuit of Kolo Muani in the coming days, who is on loan at Spurs from Paris Saint-Germain. However, he has struggled to hit top form in North London, scoring just twice in all competitions to date. Should the France international leave for Juve in the final days of the January transfer window, Crystal Palace striker Mateta is expected to emerge as Spurs' top target. Palace, meanwhile, have sent an improved offer of around £50 million to Wolverhampton Wanderers for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, according to BBC Sport.

- Former England international Raheem Sterling is "willing to play anywhere" after reaching an agreement to end his contract at Chelsea this week, Sky Sports reports. Sterling had left 18 months left on the contract he signed when joining the Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 -- but he is now a free agent. Sources have told ESPN that several clubs had enquired about a loan move but Sterling had stated a preference for a permanent deal to give him and his children stability as he attempts to revive his career. According to Sky Sports, "all options are on the table" for the 31-year-old, and the fact he can sign for clubs even after the transfer window has closed opens up a host of possibilities for him. On Wednesday, Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has said Sterling's "significant financial expectations" could be an obstacle in doing a deal for the forward.

- Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka is expected to decide whether he wants to join Atlético Madrid in the next 24 hours, according to Sky Sports Germany. Earlier this week, it was reported that the two parties had held talks over a transfer this month, with the Spanish club keen to find a replacement for Conor Gallagher -- who has joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £35 million deal. Goretzka is Diego Simeone's "dream" candidate, although it remains to be seen whether the German international's preference is to join Atlético now or simply wait until the summertime. His current Bayern deal expires at the end of June.

- AC Milan have held a lengthy meeting with the representatives of Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin, Calciomercato reports. The centre-back is also wanted by AS Roma and Napoli, and could still be on the move before the January transfer window slams shut. However, he isn't the only defender on Milan's shortlist, as Manchester City's Nathan Aké continues to be a player of interest. It's not currently known whether City boss Pep Guardiola would sanction his exit this close to the end of the window.

- AFC Bournemouth are in talks to sign Inter Milan winger Luis Henrique, according to talkSPORT. The Premier League side are proposing an initial loan deal, with a future option to sign him permanently for around £18 million. Henrique, 24, was heavily linked with Leeds United back in the summer, before ultimately opting to join Serie A Inter. The Brazilian has featured 26 times in all competitions this season, largely playing as a wing-back in the absence of Denzel Dumfries.

Champions League knockouts: Who could Premier League teams draw in next rounds?

Champions League knockouts: Who could Premier League teams draw in next rounds? - ESPN
Description

Six Premier League sides entered. Five in the top eight. You can't argue with how the English clubs have tackled the Champions League this season. But what's next?

We now know -- roughly at least -- who Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United could face moving forwards.

Ahead of the knockout playoff round draw on Friday, ESPN brings you all you need to know.

Who has qualified, and who's heading to the playoffs?

Eight teams have advanced to the round of 16 already, while 16 more -- who placed ninth to 24th in the 36-club league phase -- are heading to the knockout playoff round.

Arsenal won all eight of their games to qualify top, with Bayern Munich second. On a frantic final night of action, they were joined by Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP and Manchester City.

Newcastle's draw with Paris Saint-Germain left both clubs facing the knockout playoff round, along with European giants Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Atlético Madrid, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen are the other 'seeded' teams -- we'll explain more on that below -- while the unseeded playoff teams are Borussia Dortmund, Olympiacos, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, AS Monaco. FK Qarabag, Bodo/Glimt and Benfica.

Why do we know who teams can play?

As mentioned, there is a seeding system -- introduced for 2024-25 -- that ensures the higher-placed teams from the league phase won't face each other in the knockout playoff round, theoretically creating a more balanced bracket.

All 16 teams heading to the playoffs are paired based on their final position in the league phase. That means ninth-place Real Madrid are paired with 10th-place Inter, 11th-place PSG with 12th-place Newcastle, and so on. This creates eight sets of paired teams.

In the draw, each pairing will be split up and placed on opposite sides of the bracket.

On top of that, there are big advantages to the highest finishers from the league phase. Teams who finish in the top eight are guaranteed a second leg at home in the round of 16. Teams who finish in the top four are guaranteed a second leg at home in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals. The advantage extends into the semifinals for the teams that finish in the top two.

Who could Newcastle play in the playoff round?

As PSG and Newcastle finished 11th and 12th in the league phase, they will play either Monaco or Qarabag in the playoff round.

What about the rest of the Premier League teams?

Having clinched top spot, Arsenal will play one of Borussia Dortmund, Olympiacos, Atalanta or Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16, and like all of the top eight will be at home in the second leg.

Liverpool, after finishing third, will take on either Atlético, Juventus, Club Brugge or Galatasaray. That is exactly the same for Tottenham, who finished fourth in the league phase.

Chelsea will take on either PSG, Newcastle, Monaco or Qarabag.

Manchester City, meanwhile, could face another clash with Real Madrid. Their potential round of 16 opponents are the LaLiga giants, Inter, Bodo/Glimt or Benfica.

When is the draw for the knockout round playoffs?

The draw for the knockout round playoffs -- featuring the clubs that finish ninth to 24th -- will take place on Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. GMT. ESPN will bring you all the updates with a live blog.

After the draw, what happens next?

Next, the teams drawn Friday compete in the two-legged knockout playoff round in February.

Once that round is complete, the draw for the round of 16 will be held Feb. 27. That draw will determine the round-of-16 matchups and finalise the bracket for the remainder of the knockout rounds.

What are the remaining important Champions League dates this season?

Robbie Keane: Nice to be linked with 'fantastic' Spurs again

Robbie Keane: Nice to be linked with 'fantastic' Spurs again - ESPN
Description

Robbie Keane says it is nice to be involved in future Tottenham manager speculation, and while spoke of his affection for the club, said he does not think about the rumours.

The former Spurs striker, who currently manages Hungarian side Ferencvaros, has been the subject of speculation as a candidate should Thomas Frank leave the north London club.

Asked whether he was aware of the reports linking him with a return to the club where he made over 300 appearances, Keane replied: "I think it's impossible to not be aware of anything these days, to be honest with you, especially, when you have two kids who are Tottenham fans.

"Thomas Frank is a very, very good manager. He just started there. As I said, lot of stuff gets written, even when I was a player, going somewhere, going different places.

"But I'll be honest with you, it goes over my head. I concentrate on what I'm doing. I think it's nice that your name is there. Who puts it there? I have no clue, but it shows you that I'm doing OK to be even put there.

"I'm obviously aware of it, but I am happy here."

The 45-year-old spent two spells at Spurs during an esteemed playing career, scoring 122 goals and helping the Premier League side to the League Cup in 2007.

Asked whether the club still meant a lot to him, he replied: "Absolutely, you can't be at a club that long if it doesn't.

"I mean, that's natural. It's a fantastic club. Unbelievable training and the stadium is amazing, of course -- as we all know -- and really good players.

"Yes, they've got a lot of injuries but it's certainly a place that always look out for, as I said, my two boys, they're Tottenham fans and are always watching and, of course, like me, I watch every game regardless of it being Tottenham or anyone.

"So it's a wonderful football club. And I'm sure there's no doubt that they'll get back to where they belong."

Keane is back in England with the Hungarian club as they close their Europa League group phase with a clash against Nottingham Forest.

He is doing an impressive job in a relatively minor European league but he believes it is a path he had to take.

"Sometimes you have to spread your wings somewhere else and that's what I've done, that was the path I wanted to take, because I wanted to go somewhere where I could win and stamp my authority on the way I want to play," he added.

- Spurs' Kolo Muani 'fine' after car crash

- Robertson to stay at Liverpool after Tottenham move collapses

- Frank tells Tottenham fans he is 'working very hard' amid dismal run

"If I start my journey for example here in England after six games, an inexperienced coach gets sacked, where do you go from there?

"So it's a little bit similar to what I did as a player. I chose Wolves over Liverpool because I wanted to play.

"I'm really enjoying it here.

"Of course, you never say never. I think if you're a player or a coach, you have aspirations to be the best that you can be and be at the highest you can be. That's normal.

"I've got no complaints and I don't worry about thinking about where I'm going next, because I'll take my eye off the ball here."
