Why Spurs' record transfer Gaupset is one of the best U21 players around - ESPN
Description

After finishing 11th in the Women's Super League (WSL) table last season with just 20 points from 22 games, Tottenham Hotspur are on the rise under new manager Martin Ho. They now sit fifth, with 16 points from their first nine games, and have four clean sheets -- the joint most in the league, and twice as many as they had for the entirety of last season.

The signs of progress are evident and, after bringing in Ho from Norwegian side Brann, the club bolstered their squad with quality players like Toko Koga and Cathinka Tandberg. And now they've done it again, as 20-year-old Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset will join from Brann in January for a reported club-record fee of £378,000 (€430,000) to reunite with her former manager.

Gaupset made waves by signing for IL Sandviken -- now rebranded as Brann -- before her 16th birthday in 2021 and helped them win the domestic double a year later, starring in the cup final with two goals and an assist.

She then caught the eye in the UEFA Women's Champions League with strong performances against OL Lyonnes in the 2023-24 season, and was voted the best player in the Norwegian league this season for her 15 goals and 14 assists in 26 Toppserien games -- more than doubling her goal contributions from last season (14).

Having made her senior international debut for Norway in 2024, she put in three fine games at Euro 2025 this summer -- including four goal contributions in the win over Iceland -- and has become a central player for club and country, with everything from build-up play to chance creation funneling through her.

So what makes her so special? And how will she fit at Spurs?

Position

Gaupset is a creative behemoth who can operate from both wings or central midfield.

She can influence play at both ends of the field, being the team's first option to progress the ball while building from the back, while also finishing off those sequences in the final third.

She is a marquee player who can change the game, and the variety in her goals and assists highlights her well-rounded skillset.

Strengths

The 20-year-old is comfortable with either foot and has exceptional technical qualities. Her feathery first touch compliments her galloping runs down the field, while her line-breaking vision is complimented by a powerful shot from range that makes her a threat from anywhere.

At 5-foot-8, and having played against boys until the age of 14, Gaupset has a physical edge over her peers. She is sharp and strong in physical duels, but her primary strength is her excellent ball-carrying skills.

Gaupset is able to charge down the field with the ball seemingly glued to her feet, and her sharp changes in direction and ability to dribble with either foot make her hard to stop. She can either cut inside or attack the byline -- preferring the former when playing off the left side -- and has the full range of attacking attributes to call upon to create chances.

Knut Slatleim, her assistant coach at SK Brann, has described her as possessing "a determination that is not quite normal" and she is constantly looking for opportunities to get on the ball and help her team.

Alongside her ball-carrying ability, her shooting is phenomenal. Gaupset laces her shots with venom, making her a threat from any angle or range, and she is able to generate power with minimal backlift.

Her recent brace for Norway against Japan in October was a prime example of her fine ball striking and placement, while her performance against Iceland at Euro 2025 saw her involved in all four goals -- scoring two; assisting two -- and she also created seven chances, made five ball recoveries and won three of her four aerial duels as well.

The fact her goal contributions against Iceland came with both her right and left foot, and from both outside and inside the box, underlines her ability to shine in every situation.

Things to work on

Still only 20, she can continue to improve the execution and timing on her final ball.

While she is quick to spot passing lanes, weighing up her options and reducing her turnover rate will push her into the same bracket as breakout stars like Vicky Lopez (Barcelona) and Linda Caicedo (Real Madrid).

She will also look to have more of an impact on the full 90 minutes of games.

How will she fit at Spurs?

Gaupset had outgrown Brann, and Spurs are the perfect bridge for the jump from Toppserien to WSL -- though it would not be a surprise to see her move to a bigger club for an even larger fee in the coming years.

Spurs have added quality signings in recent windows but there are still gaps in their squad, especially in the attacking department. They rank in the WSL's bottom four for shots and non-penalty expected goals (npxG), and in the bottom three for touches in the penalty area.

While Ho is keen to build his tactics around possession, implementing his plans will take time. So far, Spurs have relied on their defensive nous to put points on board, often making last-ditch saves and blocks. Indeed, they rank first in the WSL for blocks and are the only side yet to commit an error leading to shots this season, highlighting the quality of Koga and the renaissance of 26-year-old Australia defender Clare Hunt.

However, this defense-first approach means that good offensive additions are key to the club's future success, and while Tandberg's arrival addressed the overreliance on Beth England for goals, the chance creation and contributions from the flanks continue to be sub-par. So far, Jessica Naz and Matilda Vinberg have a combined one goal contribution and five chances in the WSL this season.

While the wide players have offered some one-vs.-one ability, with Naz in the WSL's top three for attempted take-ons (29), they have largely been ineffective, and Naz has also been dispossessed the most in the league -- 10 times more than the next best.

Gaupset's signing offers a one-stop solution for these issues. She can operate as a creative powerhouse and goal-scoring threat from the midfield or the wings, and will improve the quality and effectiveness in one-vs.-one and ball-carrying situations.

While her preferred position is in the attacking No. 8 role in midfield, Gaupset may need to alleviate some of these existing gaps on the flanks to begin with. Ho knows of her quality and seems to be in sync with the player, which should make the transition between leagues slightly smoother.

But ultimately, Spurs finally have a creator and goal scorer to support their strikers and won't have to rely on their full backs to put in a double shift. The club are itching to take the next step and Gaupset can propel them to new heights.

Tottenham's Frank expects derby 'chaos,' teases 'traitors' in Arsenal camp

Tottenham's Frank expects derby 'chaos,' teases at 'traitors' in Arsenal camp - ESPN
Description

Thomas Frank has warned Tottenham to prepare for a "madhouse" derby at Arsenal and plans to get the better of the "two traitors" in the opposition squad.

Spurs visit their archrivals on Sunday in search of only a second Premier League win at Emirates Stadium since it opened 19 years ago.

Tottenham boast a poor recent record in the north London derby, but nevertheless it often provides drama and excitement in equal measure.

Frank claimed a point at Arsenal last season with Brentford and his first ever Premier League fixture in 2021 ended with a memorable 2-0 triumph, but two members of his starting line-up that night have since been signed by Mikel Arteta in David Raya and Christian Nørgaard.

Reminded of that and the frenetic nature of this fixture, Frank smiled and joked: "Two of them are now traitors and moved to the wrong club!

"The interesting thing is that probably both Mikel and I would like a little bit more control, but it will probably be a madhouse and very, very enjoyable to watch for the outside people or fans.

"I expect a difficult game of course, but a game that can go anywhere and anything can happen in games like that. Everything also evens out a little bit more because it's so competitive and the atmosphere in the stadium.

"Definitely embrace controlled chaos or chaos we like to create if that makes sense, because chaos can also be good. It can be too disruptive, or too fixed and too stop-start, so we need a bit of chaos.

"And chaos can be transitions, high-pressure and set-piece second phases and all them areas are of course areas we would like to exploit if we can.

"We will never go for a 0-0. It maybe will end 0-0 but we will always try to win. Always, always, always."

Set-pieces are expected to be decisive with Arsenal way out in front with 12 goals from corners and free-kicks in the division this season.

Tottenham have also been productive with five in the Premier League after Frank hired Andreas Georgson as set-piece coach this summer.

Georgson worked with Frank at Brentford and Arsenal's set-piece guru Nicolas Jover also started out under the Danish coach in west London.

"Both of them are very curious, both want to learn and develop constantly by studying the game of set-pieces so in that way they are quite the same mindset in many ways," Frank reflected.

"So, in that they are quite similar. One is Swedish, the other French so a little bit different temper!

"Mikel and I with our coaching staffs will have a battle -- how can we get the upper hand? And it will be the same with Nicolas and Andreas.

"I'm pretty sure the bits I've done at Brentford have inspired a lot of clubs to focus more on set-pieces and it is quite interesting that this year I go from Brentford to Tottenham, the spike in focus on set-pieces for all the teams, especially the long throws, is crazy.

"It seems like everyone are very, very focused on them, which we should be. They're a third of our goals. So why not be very good in that phase, and very good in high pressure. We need to be good in many phases."

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has been given a major boost ahead of Sunday's trip to north London rivals Arsenal with forward Randal Kolo Muani available.

The Paris Saint-Germain loanee suffered a blow to his jaw in Spurs' 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Nov. 8 and subsequently missed international duty with France.

He joined a lengthy injury list for Tottenham, but Frank provided positive updates on a number of players and Kolo Muani can unexpectedly play after he was fitted with a protective mask in order to train this week.

"Pape (Matar Sarr) trained today, ready and available. Lucas (Bergvall) trained today and is available. Kolo Muani, yes trained today, available, of course he has a mask he needs to play with," Frank said.

Defenders Ben Davies and Kota Takai also returned to training this week and centre-back Radu Dragusin took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly earlier this month to step up his recovery after he sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage in January.

Archie Gray is another back and Mohammed Kudus, who missed international duty with Ghana, has also returned to training in a further boost for Frank.

James Maddison, Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski remain sidelined along with Dominic Solanke, who has not featured since Aug. 23 and had minor surgery on his ankle last month.

TRENDING RUMORS

- Manchester City still hold interest in Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. Fabrizio Romano says that the 24-year-old Brazil international is appreciated by City manager Pep Guardiola, but any move is more likely to take place in the summer and would cost around €80 million. Despite reports of interest emerging from Chelsea, it is reported that the Blues aren't currently exploring a move for Rodrygo, though his future at the Bernabéu remains uncertain due to a difficult competition for minutes, with just two starts in LaLiga so far this season.

- Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are looking at West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, according to Football Insider. The 28-year-old is reportedly receiving attention from both Premier League sides, but the Hammers would only be prepared to consider letting him go if they receive an "irresistible" offer. Bowen's future at the London Stadium remains secured until the summer of 2030 after the England international signed a seven-year extension in 2023.

- An approach for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is being lined up by Chelsea, reports TEAMtalk. The Blues are reported to have placed the 21-year-old at the top of their shortlist and believe he has the potential to be a future cornerstone for the club, but they are unlikely to make a move in January due to the expected transfer fee of over £100 million. Como midfielder Nico Paz, 21, has been identified as an alternative to Wharton, who has also been linked with Manchester United, though they are very different types of players.

- Barcelona are interested in Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, according to The Guardian. The LaLiga club have reportedly made the 32-year-old their No. 1 priority amid their search to find the ideal successor to 37-year-old Robert Lewandowski, who is set to be out of contract in June. Kane's impressive form has seen him score 23 goals in 16 matches across all competitions this season, and a clause in his contract allows him to be signed for a fee of around €65 million in the summer.

- A battle between Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Chelsea is expected to take place for the signing of Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, per Gazzetta dello Sport. It is reported that contract talks have stalled after a recent meeting, with the 20-year-old looking for an offer worth in the region of €6 million-per-season. The Bianconeri have now paused talks with Yildiz's representatives, but they will demand a transfer fee in excess of €100 million if they are unable to sign him to an extension as several clubs are monitoring the situation.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN's Beth Lindop on Liverpool's links with West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen.

It's not the first time Liverpool have been linked with a move for Bowen. As an explosive left-footed right winger, there have inevitably been comparisons drawn with Mohamed Salah over the years and, even in a struggling West Ham team, Bowen's numbers are impressive. In 2025, only Erling Haaland and Bryan Mbeumo have scored more Premier League open play goals than the 28-year-old.

However, while he could offer a short-term boost to Liverpool's misfiring attack, he does not fit the profile the Reds are likely to be targeting in the market.

Bowen turns 29 next month and, considering his importance to West Ham and the fact he is under contract until 2030, it would likely take a significant transfer fee to sign a player who is probably approaching the end of his peak. Financially, it is a deal that just wouldn't make sense for Liverpool.

TRENDING RUMORS

- Tottenham Hotspur are willing to pay Harry Kane's release clause, which sources told ESPN is worth €60 million, and meet the wages required to bring the striker back from Bayern Munich, according to TEAMtalk. The 32-year-old is reportedly keen to return to the Premier League in a bid to chase down Alan Shearer's league record of 260 goals, having scored 213 himself before moving to Germany. Manchester United also want to sign Kane and view him as a key player for their rebuild, but any chances of signing the England international hinge on improving their league position.

- Liverpool are set to make contact with Borussia Dortmund over center back Nico Schlotterbeck, Christian Falk reports. Dortmund have offered the 25-year-old a new contract worth around €8m gross per year, but the Reds would be able to go higher and need to cover for Giovanni Leoni's injury amid long-term doubts surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konaté, who has been linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid next summer. Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi is also on Liverpool's radar, while Bayern Munich could also move for Schlotterbeck.

- Manchester City are planning a £75 million move to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson but are likely to face stiff competition from Chelsea, according to The Daily Star. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the top options if Pep Guardiola opts to strengthen his midfield in the summer, with Nico González having struggled since joining from FC Porto and questions lingering over Rodri's long-term future.

- Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona are all watching Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, Gazzetta dello Sport reports. Juventus are set to offer the 20-year-old a contract renewal that will run until 2030, but they haven't yet agreed on the finances. And Chelsea haven't given up after seeing a €67 million offer to sign Yildiz rejected in the summer, while Arsenal and Barcelona are preparing to compete with them.

- Real Madrid and Barcelona both want to sign center back Dayot Upamecano as a free agent when his contract at Bayern Munich expires in the summer, Footmercato reports. Los Blancos are looking to replace ageing duo Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba, while the Barcelona could let Ronald Araújo depart and need cover. Manchester United are among the English clubs also interested in Upamecano, but the prospect of him staying at Bayern hasn't been completely ruled out either.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN's Sam Tighe explores the future for Bayern striker Harry Kane.

When Kane finally sealed his blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2023, it only ever felt like "goodbye for now" to the Premier League.

Many assumed he'd be back at some point to chase down Alan Shearer's record goal tally of 260 -- and despite claiming to have never felt more settled in Bavaria, scoring 23 goals in all competitions for club and country as he hits top form, the rumours of a return grow ever stronger.

Kane's brilliance is built on a natural goal-scoring instinct, pure ball-striking, game intelligence and a frankly incredible level of creativity for a No. 9. None of that will dim with age, so if harnessed correctly -- i.e. not in some manic high-pressing system where he's asked to sprint around -- the 32-year-old has plenty of years left at the top.

He's so good that teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United should be happy to re-wire their entire tactical setup around him, ensuring he has pacy wingers to pick him out with long passes and room to drop deep and receive the ball wherever he wishes.

Typically speaking, you'd be mad to spend €60 million to sign a player who will turn 33 in 2026, but Kane is no typical case.

Tottenham announce £100M injection, Lewis family reiterate ambition

Tottenham owners Lewis family inject £100m - ESPN
Description

Tottenham have announced a new £100 million ($133m) capital injection as the Lewis family reiterated their long-term commitment to the club.

In a statement released on Thursday, the club stated the equity release "will further strengthen the club's financial position and equip the club's leadership team with additional resources to continue the focus on driving long-term sporting success."

It follows on from last month's £90m financial deal with Macquarie Group and is part of the ownership's latest efforts to reaffirm their ongoing commitment to the club and accelerate Spurs' ability to compete for the biggest trophies.

A source close to the family told ESPN: "This is initial additional funding. As the club's management decides what's needed to deliver success, more money will be available. The Lewis family is committed to backing the club to be successful."

Tottenham's Non-Executive Chairman Peter Charrington said: "As I stated a few weeks ago, our focus is on stability and empowering the management team to deliver on the club's ambitions.

"I know the Lewis family are also ambitious for the future. Today's capital commitment reflects that ambition and I would like to thank them for their ongoing support.

"We will continue to do all we can to ensure that [chief executive] Vinai [Venkatesham] and his team are supported in the best way possible to take this club forward.

The use of the money will ultimately be decided by the executive team but is viewed as a wide-ranging investment which could include spending on players.

Sources have told ESPN that multiple parties were in talks with Spurs over a potential takeover of the club over several months -- including with buyers based in the United States - but those conversations failed to reach a positive conclusion.

Spurs confirmed late last month that current owners Enic Sports & Developments Holdings Ltd -- the company owned by Joe Lewis which has an 86.58 per cent stake in Tottenham -- had "unequivocally rejected" informal interest from a consortium led by American entrepreneur Brooklyn Earick.

They had also dismissed approaches from a consortium of investors led by Dr Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk as well as another group involving Amanda Staveley's PCP International Finance.

All three parties have since had to publicly declare their intentions to comply with the Takeover Code and each has insisted they do not intend to make a fresh offer. They now cannot make a new bid for six months unless another consortium or individual makes an offer.

Spurs have instead chosen to reshuffle their boardroom as chairman Daniel Levy left the club in early September to be replaced by Charrington while Venkatesham became chief executive, a role he once held at north London rivals Arsenal.

Lewis's daughter Vivienne, his son Charles and grandson-in-law Nick Beucher -- co-CEO of Tavistock Group, the Lewis family office and private investment company -- have been more prominent around the club of late.

Sources: Orlando eyed summer Richarlison deal - ESPN
Description

Orlando City wanted to bring Tottenham Hotspur forwardRicharlison to Major League Soccer in the summer, sources told ESPN Brasil, although a move failed to materialise over a potential €40 million ($46.4m) transfer fee.

The MLS club wanted to sign the Brazil international to a long-term contract and make him the team's leading figure in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Richarlison, 28, insisted in the last transfer window that he was keen to continue at Spurs for at least another season. He confirmed that he had turned down an offer from a Saudi Pro League club in August as he felt a move away from London could impact his chances of playing for Brazil at the World Cup.

Partey booed by Spurs fans ahead of court hearing - ESPN
Description

LONDON -- Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey was booed by Tottenham Hotspur fans on his return to London for a Champions League game the night before he was due in court on rape charges.

The 32-year-old former Arsenal midfielder started on the bench just hours before a scheduled appearance at the Old Bailey in London on Wednesday. In July, he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Partey came on as a substitute in the 78th minute. Spurs fans immediately booed him and continued doing it any time he got involved in play. Tottenham won 1-0.

The alleged offenses, which relate to three women, occurred between 2021-22 when Partey was an Arsenal player.

Partey was granted bail in a court appearance in London on Aug 5. Villarreal signed him two days later.

Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, previously said he "denies all the charges against him" and that he welcomed "the opportunity to finally clear his name."

Police said the investigation was opened in February 2022 when it first received a report of rape.
