Höbinger converted a 95th-minute penalty at Brisbane Road to settle a topsy-turvy affair and clinch the Reds' first Barclays Women's Super League win of the season.

The visitors were pegged back by Spurs on two occasions after Cornelia Kapocs opened the game's scoring ahead of Höbinger making it 2-1 entering the final quarter of an hour.

They were not to be denied following Clare Hunt's late equaliser, with Höbinger stepping up when a foul on Sophie Roman Haug resulted in the awarding of the injury-time spot-kick.

"It was crazy," Höbinger told BBC Sport post-match. 'It was very hard, we had to stay very focused, but we really wanted to get those three points. I'm just glad we got the win."

On her penalty, she added: "I was very nervous, to be honest. But I knew we were going to win this game, I knew I wanted to do it [take the penalty].

"I was just so sure that that's the moment that is going to bring us the three points. I knew where I wanted to place it and I just went 100 per cent."

Höbinger was duly voted the Reds' Carlsberg Player of the Match by supporters.

Her first goal of the afternoon came via a perfectly placed free-kick that was borne out of belief and hard work on the pitches at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

She said: "I knew where I wanted to place it straight away when I saw the position and then I thought, 'You're going to do it. Just put it over their heads.' I think that worked quite well.

"We do practise shooting a lot – that's the most fun part as well! I really enjoy doing that and the coaches always help with beating the wall and helping with different techniques."

The Reds claimed a dramatic three points in the capital in Barclays Women's Super League action, with Marie Höbinger netting a penalty in minute 95 to claim the spoils.

Cornelia Kapocs had opened the scoring in the first half for Liverpool with a fine lobbed effort, before a Taylor Hinds own goal levelled proceedings after the interval.

Höbinger then put the Reds back in front thanks to an inch-perfect free-kick, though Clare Hunt's deflected effort left the score all square ahead of the decisive strike from 12 yards in injury time.

"It was like history repeating itself in the first two games where we've had really good chances to go two or maybe even three up today," Beard told BBC Sport post-match.

"We've shown amazing character. Tottenham are a good side, but for us to keep plugging away at it and get the three points – it's a big three points for us."

He added: "We should've been two or three up with the chances that we've had. This is the problem now that the league is so competitive, that if you don't take your chances then at some point you're going to be under pressure. That's happened today.

"It was important we got the three points because the girls have been a little bit up and down confidence-wise, especially in the last week with the way it panned out for us. It's a big three points."

On the injury to Sofie Lundgaard in the first half and how that changed his game plan, Beard continued: "I'm gutted for Sofie because this is the second time this has happened to her.

"Ceri [Holland] is obviously out for two or three weeks, and she gets an opportunity to get a run in the team and the same thing has happened. It doesn't look good. We take Sofie out and we had to put Jas [Matthews] in midfield and she's more defence-minded, so we had to adjust slightly.

"We did think about maybe putting Fuka [Nagano] a bit higher, but we felt the way they were overloading our right side we needed to deal with that. We ended up changing to a 3-4-3, which I felt probably won us the game in the end."

The forward got on the scoresheet in spectacular fashion during the Barclays Women's Super League 1-1 draw away at West Ham United.

That excellent curler has been nominated for WSL Goal of the Month in September, and the summer arrival from Sporting CP hopes it's the first of many in a red shirt.

She told Liverpoolfc.com: "I was super-excited. It was a great moment for me just to get that account started early. Definitely looking towards more for the season.

"Definitely a nice feeling [for it to be nominated]. I think that kind of just goes to show who I am just as a creative player.

"I'm always looking to take players on and [a] quick cutback, quick release is something that I've been working on and something that I'm pretty good at. It's great to have that as my first goal."

The Canadian is growing more comfortable within Matt Beard's squad with each passing week after missing a fair chunk of pre-season when participating at the U20 Women's World Cup.

"I definitely think it was frustrating having to miss almost a month, if not a month," the No.11 said. "But I feel like I'm settling in pretty well with the girls.

"Matt and the staff have been amazing [at] reintegrating me back into the squad as well. It's only up from here and there's still a lot of learning to get through but we still have time."

After beginning the league season with a pair of draws, Smith is hoping to register her first victory as a Liverpool player on Sunday.

The Reds return to the capital and will meet Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road in a 2.15pm BST kick-off.

Looking ahead to the game, Smith analysed: "Obviously all the teams in this league are amazing and I think we just have to go in with a proper mindset in that we haven't lost a game yet, and that's the most important thing.

"We're still in the running to try to place as a top-three team. Again, they [Tottenham] are strong but when we have a good day, we can win."

She said: "I'm definitely super-excited. I have my mum, my dad and my sister coming in to support.

"It'll be my first time in Anfield ever, so I'm definitely looking forward to that experience and hopefully our fans are looking forward to it as well."

The Reds' third league fixture of the 2024-25 campaign takes them to the capital once again as they meet Spurs at Brisbane Road on Sunday.

Opta have provided the following facts and figures ahead of the 2.15pm BST kick-off...

WSL at Anfield: Get tickets for Liverpool v Manchester City here

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six WSL games – last going longer without defeat in the competition in September 2016 (eight).

Only Manchester City (nine) are currently on a longer unbeaten run away from home than Matt Beard's side (six).

After losing their first two WSL meetings with Tottenham, the Reds are now unbeaten in their last three games against Spurs.

At an average of 26 years and 25 days, Liverpool have fielded the second-youngest starting XIs in the WSL so far this season.

Marie Höbinger has created more chances via set-pieces (three) across the opening two matchdays of the WSL campaign than any other player.

Höbinger has assisted five of the Reds' last 11 goals in the league – all from corner kicks.

Last season's meetings between the clubs in the WSL both ended in 1-1 draws.

Tottenham are aiming to go unbeaten in each of their opening three matches of a WSL season for the second time, after doing so in 2021-22.

Spurs are unbeaten in their three previous home encounters with Liverpool in the competition, with those matches seeing just four goals scored in total.

Only Chelsea (seven) have had more different goalscorers in the WSL this term than Tottenham, with each of Spurs' six league goals coming via a different player.

The Reds make the trip to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off in the capital set for 2.15pm BST.

Beard told the media briefing: “We’ve got a couple that we’ll assess by tomorrow. We lose Zara [Shaw] and Eva Spencer, so we’ve only got one fit goalkeeper going into the weekend.

“We’ve tried everything to get an emergency loan but they’re obviously going to the U17 World Cup.

“We’ve got a couple we need to assess tomorrow, so the squad will be stretched this weekend.”

On trying to get an emergency loan in, he added: “There’s just no-one available. The Champions League teams have submitted their list, and I think if a goalkeeper goes out on loan and then plays, they can’t play in that tournament.

“We’ve been trying to do it. Teagan [Micah] is probably going to be back in next week, but it’s just unfortunate we’ve not been able to do it.”

Description

It was disappointing not to take all three points at West Ham because I felt we should have done and we conceded a goal I wasn't happy with.

There is still plenty of work for us to do. I've said it all along but we are still playing catch-up because of the pre-season we had with injuries.

Buy your tickets for LFC Women v Man City at Anfield here

We had 10 players that were modified leading into our first game. So we are still playing catch-up in certain areas, players are still finding their feet and 100 per cent we are going to have to rotate on Wednesday night when we play Manchester United in the Women's League Cup (kick-off 7pm BST at Leigh Sports Village).

We should have beaten West Ham but we didn't. We've not lost but we know there is still plenty for us to do and lots to improve on. Knowing this group as I know them, we will come through that the other side.

I was delighted for Smithy [Olivia Smith] to net her first goal for the club and I see her do that every day in training. When she gets in a position to shoot like that, nine times out of 10 it ends up in the back of the net.

I said to the girls in the meeting on Monday if we get an opportunity to shoot then shoot, because Smithy had another one in the second half when she turned the defender inside the box but chose to pass instead and it was cut out when she could have struck.

Like I said, we are still finding our feet a bit and the positives are we've played two and not lost. But it's important we start turning these points into three.

The goal we conceded was frustrating because we've covered those types of crosses earlier on in the week in training, making sure we defend in the box. Lawsy [Rachael Laws] has come for it but we still should have dealt with it.

I was a little disappointed with our aerial duels, if I'm honest, especially defensively. Our duels throughout the game were not at the standard that we set ourselves, especially with the height we've got in the back line. We should be winning those types of headers, so to concede like that was super-frustrating.

People talk about scheduling and it does need looking at because by the time we would have played Tottenham Hotspur away on Sunday, we would have spent 26 hours on a coach in the space of a week.

There is a lot we deal with this week and we need to rotate on Wednesday night. It's a great opportunity to give other players a chance to stake a claim.

I don't understand why the League Cup isn't scheduled the same week as the Champions League so everyone has the same schedules. It's frustrating.

Manchester United have an advantage over us now because their game was called off at the weekend.

We then face Tottenham on Sunday in the Barclays Women's Super League at Brisbane Road (kick-off 2.15pm BST).

I watched Tottenham get a point with a late goal against Aston Villa on the coach back from West Ham. They are a good team and they have strengthened during the summer, so the team got better. Robert [Vilahamn] had a good first season in charge. We know this is going to be a tough game.

As always, we will be prepared for the game and see where it takes us.

With Teagan Micah and Faye Kirby missing, we only have Lawsy as our senior goalkeeper, with young stopper Eva Spencer on the bench.

Lawsy is in a good way, she can play three games this week, she is fine, so we've got nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your continued support.

YNWA,

Matt
