Opposing manager - thomas frank

After 18 years in youth coaching, Frank started his senior career with Brondby in 2013.

After his departure three years later, he moved to the Premier League where he joined Brentford as assistant head coach.

Before later being promoted to the role of head coach in 2018.

After securing promotion to the Premier League for the Bees, Frank became only the second Brentford head coach or manager to achieve passage to the top-flight of English football.

He cemented the side as an established Premier League side, recording impressive 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th-place finishes in the top-flight.

Later making the move across the capital to join Spurs in the summer replacing Ange Postecoglou as head coach.

DANGER MEN

One of the most impressive goal threats is defender Micky van de Ven.

The 24-year-old has played 30 games across all competitions, scoring seven which from the backline too makes him one to keep a very close eye on.

Although, he appears to be a doubt for our clash on Sunday after picking up a ‘minor’ injury.

Brennan Johnson found the net in our home tie earlier in the season, so City will be hoping to keep him quiet to not see a repeat performance from the youngster.

Dominic Solanke is clinical in front of goal, most recently scoring on Wednesday evening against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Helping his side through to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League after beating the Bundesliga team.

Another threat comes from Cristian Romero who has been directly involved in nine goals for Tottenham Hotspur across all competitions this season (6 goals, 3 assists), as many goal contributions as he managed in his first four campaigns for Spurs combined.

Pep Guardiola preview

The City Boss will address the media on Friday 30 January from 12:30 (UK).

You can follow along live on mancity.com and our official app, with a full written recap available shortly after its conclusion.

Last time out

Manchester City claimed their spot in the Round of 16 of the Champions League after 2-0 victory over Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium.

Erling Haaland latched on to a Jeremy Doku through ball in the 10th minute and chipped it over the top of Ugurcan Cakir in the Galatasaray goal for the first.

With Rayan Cherki finding the net after another superb assist from Doku.

It means we end the league phase in eighth position with 16 points and will therefore skip next month’s play-off round.

Previous meeting

We last played Spurs at the Etihad Stadium in August, in what was our opening home game of the 2025/26 season.

City suffered a 2-0 loss as Brennan Johnson opening the scoring with Joao Palhinha doubling the visitors’ lead.

PREVIOUS MEETING

We last met Spurs in March which was also played at Brisbane Road as Aoba Fujino’s fist WSL goal helped us to hard fought 2-1 win last term.

Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring for the Blues with a well-met header, but Bethany England equalised before half-time with the teams evenly matched.

As the contest looked likely to end in a draw, Fujino collected a precise pass from Yui Hasegawa before smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

LAST TIME OUT

In what was our first match at the Joie Stadium this season, we came from a goal down to beat Brighton 2-1 in our previous outing.

The Seagulls had taken the lead in the first half when Fran Kirby collected the ball inside the box and drilled low into the box and the visitors took that slender lead into the interval.

Following the break, though, we flipped the match on its head following goals from Bunny Shaw and Hasegawa.

The Jamaican equalised when powering a header home from a Leila Ouahabi cross before the Japan international gathered the ball inside the area and expertly dispatched from close range.

Watch: More from Guardiola after City’s defeat to Spurs - Manchester City FC
Description

It was a disappointing day at the Etihad Stadium as we were beaten 2-0 after first-half goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha.

City started brightly on the back of our emphatic opening day victory over Wolves with Omar Marmoush close to opening the scoring.

But despite having more possession, Spurs were ruthless with both of their first-half shots on target hitting the back of the net.

City tried to fight back in the second half but Thomas Frank’s side saw out the victory to claim the three points.

Description

We kicked off at our home, the Etihad Stadium, for the first time in the new campaign against Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur.

The North London side seem to enjoy coming to the Etihad, losing just once in their last four visits, claiming two wins and earning one draw in the process.

SUBSCRIBE TO CITY+

Furthermore, the last four top-flight meetings between the sides in Manchester produced a whooping 21 goals, providing plenty of entertainment and drama for supporters of both sides, as well as neutrals.

And, after our impressive 4-0 victory in our season-opener at Wolves and Spurs’ comfortable 3-0 win over newly-promoted Burnley last weekend, who could make it two wins from two?

Spurs have not won their opening two fixtures of a league season since the 2021/22 season, whilst since April, City have picked up more points than any other Premier League side (26), and are the only ever-present side to remain unbeaten in that time.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha earned Thomas Frank’s new side the three points in an otherwise cagey game at the Etihad.

In what was our first home game of the new season, City started full of confidence after the opening day defeat of Wolves.

Omar Marmoush could have opened the scoring less than 10 minutes in and had another golden chance as the half hour approached.

Instead, it was Spurs who took the lead with a quick breakaway that was finished by Wales winger Johnson.

The visitors doubled their lead before the break when Palhinha capitalised on a miscommunication in the City box.

We pushed for a route into the game as the second half wore on, but never truly tested Guglielmo Vicario to his limits.

Guardiola gave his reaction to assembled media shortly after the final whistle.

We have to get back to work, says Dias in wake of Spurs defeat

We have to get back to work, says Dias in wake of Spurs defeat - Manchester City FC
Description

Our first home fixture of the new campaign ended in disappointment after first-half strikes from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha secured the three points for the visitors.

Our best chances came through Omar Marmoush, who was denied smartly by goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario twice in the opening half hour.

The defeat means we now have one win and one defeat after two matches in the league this season and Dias, who is amongst the captaincy group, has called for the team to continue working on the training pitch to bounce back from the setback.

“Spurs are a team who can be very dangerous, they started the game very well,” he said after the game.

“We didn’t react the best way in sticking to our game. The second goal is unfortunate, it cannot happen. We chased but there was a lot of things to do better.

“Not everything was good in our first game and not everything is bad now so we have to get back to work.

“It’s frustrating, we want to win even more at home in front of our fans in our first home game. It is what it is, it’s football and we look forward.”

The Portuguese defender extended his City stay on Friday with a new four-year deal keeping him at the Club until the summer of 2029.

The defender believes that his commitment to the Club shows the ambition from everyone involved to win more trophies.

“It says about our ambition, it says that we want to stay here and win trophies,” he declared.

“And that’s the mentality of the Club, nothing has changed.”
