MATCH PREVIEW | SPURS V CITY

After our 2-0 defeat to league leaders Liverpool last weekend, the squad are fully focused on putting on a positive performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Our encounter with Ange Postecoglu’s outfit in the reverse fixture back in November saw Spurs beat City 4-0. But after an injury-ridden few months, our opponents have dropped down the Premier League table to 12th.

But with Guardiola‘s side fighting hard for a place in the top four as we enter the business end of the season, a win over Spurs will be key to staying in the Champions League places. So Wednesday evening’s clash looks set to be an exciting one.

After a torrid run of form since Spurs’ move to the stadium - losing four in a row without scoring a single goal - we won 2-0 on the Seven Sisters Road last May.

Not only that, but that game left us just one win away from an historic fourth Premier League title in a row.

Stefan Ortega Moreno‘s incredible save in that game is just one of the memories reflected on in this video.

We also see an outstanding Niall Quinn strike, a Joe Hart masterclass and Edin Dzeko’s four-goal haul at White Hart Lane.

Take a trip down memory lane at the top of the page...

Pep Guardiola‘s team travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a 19:30 (UK) kick-off on Wednesday 26 February.

To get into the matchday mood as City look to return to winning ways in the Premier League, watch the entirety of our 2011 match-up where City looked to begin our 2011/12 campaign with a strong performance.

Just after ending the Club’s 35-year wait for silverware - after lifting the FA Cup trophy courtesy of a Yaya Toure strike in City’s 1-0 win over Stoke - the boys in blue were keen to begin the new campaign in a similar winning fashion.

But a tough Spurs side, looking to take revenge after our win at the end of the previous campaign secured a Champions League spot for City, our opponents weren’t going to go down without a fight.

LAST TIME OUT

City secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Liverpool in the Barclays Women’s Super League at the Joie Stadium last time out.

First-half goals only 13 minutes apart from Bunny Shaw landed us with a strong 2-0 lead at half-time before strikes from Jill Roord and Gracie Prior sealed the fate of the match in City’s favour.

The crucial win at this stage of the competition landed City in a secure spot in the league with only two points separating us from the division’s top three heading into this week’s match against Spurs.

PREVIOUS MEETING

Bunny Shaw netted a record breaking hat-trick which helped us emphatically beat Vilahamn’s side 4-0 on Etihad soil in our previous meeting with Spurs.

In just 21 seconds, Shaw buried the ball in the back of the net in front of over 10,000 fans to hand us the perfect start at home and she doubled her tally in the 15th minute.

Jill Roord got her third goal in three games midway through the second period to bring Taylor’s Blues 3-0 up before Bunny secured her treble only a minute later to become the division’s all-time record hat-trick scorer.

Our match with Spurs will be broadcast live on the official Barclays Women’s Super League YouTube channel in the United Kingdom.

PREVIOUS MEETING

Our last league trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw Erling Haaland strike a brace to take us within touching distance of a fourth Premier League title in a row.

It marked City’s first-ever league victory – and goals – at the stadium, with both arriving on the most auspicious of occasions, putting us just one win away from the title.

We travelled there earlier this season in the Carabao Cup, where the hosts claimed a slender 2-1 victory.

In the reverse fixture in the league at the Etihad this term, Ange Postecoglou’s men secured a 4-0 victory.

LAST TIME OUT

Our last Premier League encounter ended in a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium against league-leaders Liverpool.

As for Tottenham, they claimed a routine 4-1 away victory over struggling Ipswich Town last time out, with Brennan Johnson claiming a brace, added to by goals from Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski.

Guardiola hopes to have Haaland back for Spurs

The Norwegian was not part of the matchday squad for our 2-0 defeat against Liverpool after also missing the Champions League second leg at Real Madrid.

Haaland picked up a knee injury in the 4-0 victory over Newcastle United in the previous weekend but Guardiola said that tests have proved positive.

He trained ahead of the Liverpool clash but was not ready to be part of the squad although the boss hopes he can play a part in our visit to North London on Wednesday night at 19:30 (UK).

“[It was] a moment in Newcastle he made an action that moved his knee,” Guardiola said.

“Apparently it’s not dangerous because all examinations say it’s fine but he didn’t feel fine.

“I have a feeling it will be soon [when he is back] because [on Saturday] he trained and made some really good movements.

“But he said to us that he’s not ready and I have to respect that. Hopefully with Spurs and in the next games he can help us.”

After a tense opening half, neither side could break the deadlock.

But whatever Ben Wilkinson said to his players was clearly motivating as it took City less than two minutes to take the lead when we returned to the Joie Stadium for the second half.

Charlie Gray whipped in a fantastic cross to the back post and captain Jahmai Simpson-Pusey tracked the ball well at the back post to nudge home his first goal of the 2024/25 campaign.

MATCH REPORT | CITY EDS 2-0 SPURS

City continued to press Spurs and utilised our speed out wide with the knowledge that at least another goal was needed against our opponents who still posed a threat.

Justin Oboavwoduo, who put on a fantastic performance, found space on the left and crossed a low ball into the box towards Divin Mubama. But the City forward, as he went to attack the ball, was fouled and won a penalty.

The number nine converted the spot kick on 54 minutes to help City confirm a comfortable win on home soil to stay top of the Premier League 2 table.
