Today's officials

Stuart Attwell takes charge of today's game, with Constantine Hatzidakis and Natalie Aspinall his assistants.

The fourth official is John Busby, the VAR is Craig Pawson and the assistant VAR is Wade Smith.

Frank: I expect proactive Brentford in January window

Brentford have a significant number of long-term injury concerns and may be forced to move in the transfer window if the absentees are not back in action soon.

Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Kristoffer Ajer, Igor Thiago, Gustavo Nunes, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey and Josh Dasilva are in the treatment room with none of them due back against Southampton.

“I expect us to be proactive, as we always are, and be out there in the market. Eyes wide open to see if there is anything we want to do,” Thomas Frank said.

“The injury situation is what it is. The medical staff are working very, very hard, doing everything they can to get people to return to play as quickly as possible.

“It’s not like we need some (new signings), but let’s see what’s happening in the next three or four weeks if players are not turned around and are able to play.”

Juric: Southampton can become like winners, not losers

Ivan Juric maintains he has seen enough in his first two games to believe the players can become “like winners, not losers”.

“They (players) are really motivated in this moment, they want to change the situation,” Juric said.

“They know they are doing better than before, and also that it is not enough, but I expected it like this.

“We need a repeat like the game against West Ham, but maybe put more energy, be more clinical with something more to win the game.

“It is important that we become like winners, not losers.

“These two games, I think we lose them on set-pieces – and there is also other things to be getting better, to be much more concentrated.

“We want to keep it this way, but we have to be getting better in attack of course.”

Juric brings in two members of backroom staff

New Southampton manager Ivan Juric has added two faces to his backroom coaching staff.

Matteo Paro has worked as Juric's assistant at Genoa, Hellas Verona, Torino and Roma and has joined the Saints in the same capacity.

Stjepan Ostojic has also worked with Juric throughout his management career and joins as fitness coach.

The pair have had their work permits approved and begun work with the squad at Staplewood Campus.

Southampton have also confirmed Matt Gill, Rhys Owen and Colin Calderwood have all now left the club.

One player every Premier League club must sign in January!

How will Brentford fare given lack of recovery?

Brentford travel to St Mary's just three days after they gave up a 1-0 lead in an eventual 3-1 loss at home to Arsenal on New Year's Day.

Injuries have been racking up for Thomas Frank's side in recent weeks, and they will face a Southampton side that, on paper at least, will be fresher given the given they have had two more days of recovery after their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on December 29.

Jones Knows' prediction

Our resident tipster has had his say...

This is an appealing spot to back Southampton at Evens with Sky Bet on the draw no bet. Brentford have lost 17 of their last 23 Premier League away games and remain a very one-dimensional team in terms of their approach. Out of possession they really struggle to create sustained pressure which makes it easy for opposition teams to enjoy lots of territory.

Plus, this is such a tight turnaround for Thomas Frank's injury-hit squad having played Arsenal on New Year's Day. If Saints can't get a result here then things really do look grim.

Tottenham January transfer window plans: Contracts, signings and targets

Submitted by daniel on

Description

What are Spurs' January transfer plans?

Tottenham are looking to strengthen their squad this January, looking at a variety of positions given injuries to key players and the decline of form as a result.

Although he has done well under the circumstances, playing Archie Gray at centre-back has not been ideal so this is one area the club are looking to add depth, as well as in the forward positions and central midfield.

They wanted Conor Gallagher or someone like him, in the summer, while Timo Werner was brought in on a loan deal in the winger positions rather than permanently, and the injuries to Richarlison and Wilson Odobert have left them short of options.

Spurs want those players back and competing for a place, in particular Richarlison, who has no desire to go anywhere in January himself, Sky Sports News understands.

South Korean winger Min-Hyeok Yang, 18, officially joined the club on January 1 following the end of his time with Gangwon FC. He had already arrived in England and begun to settle into his new surroundings but he is a development player for the future.

Which Spurs players are out of contract in the summer?

Heung-Min Son

Tottenham are expected to exercise the one-year option in their captain's contract. The 32-year-old is approaching his 11th season at Spurs and continues to be a key member of their squad.

Fraser Forster

Asked to step up this season due to Guglielmo Vicario's injury, Spurs' back-up goalkeeper could move on in the summer unless a new deal is agreed. His last contract was announced in December 2023.

Ben Davies

Ange Postecoglou has repurposed the left-back into a centre-back over the past two seasons and he appears to be the Spurs boss' preferred stand-in when Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are unavailable.

Reports claim that, like Son, he has an option in his deal which Spurs can trigger to keep him for another year.

Sergio Reguilon

The 28-year-old has fallen out of favour at Spurs and as it stands is not expected to stay beyond this season. Appearances off the bench toward the end of 2024 have only come amid a defensive injury crisis.

Alfie Whiteman

The 26-year-old goalkeeper, an academy product, signed a deal in February 2023 that runs until the end of this season but has not played for Spurs since making his debut in the Europa League in 2020.

Who did Spurs sign in the summer transfer window?

Lucas Bergvall - Djurgarden, £8.5m

Archie Gray - Leeds, £30m

Timo Werner - RB Leipzig, loan

Min-Hyeok Yang - Gangwon FC, undisclosed (arrived this January)

Dominic Solanke - Bournemouth, £65m

Wilson Odobert - Burnley, £25m

When does the winter transfer window close?

The 2025 winter transfer window officially closes on Monday February 3 at 11pm UK time in the Premier League.

The window for most major European leagues - including France (1pm GMT), Germany, Scotland and Spain - also closes on Monday February 3, though times vary.

Italian clubs, meanwhile, only have until 7pm on Saturday February 1 to do their business and the transfer window in Turkey closes on Tuesday February 11.

Further afield, the window shuts in Saudi Arabia on January 30.

Man City vs West Ham - Live match updates

Man City 0-0 West Ham

Team news - reminder

Man City: Ortega, Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol, Kovacic, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Savinho, Foden, Haaland.

Subs: Carson, Walker, Grealish, Doku, Gundogan, Nunes, Simpson-Pusey, O'Reilly, McAtee.

West Ham: Areola, Coufal, Todibo, Kilman, Wan-Bissaka, Alvarez, Soucek, Paqueta, Kudus, Fullkrug, Summerville.

Subs: Foderingham, Cresswell, Soler, Mavropanos, Luis Guilherme, Ings, Rodriguez, Irving, Scarles.

West Ham's woe in 2024

In 2024, West Ham conceded more goals than any other Premier League side (79), finishing the year with a 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool.

Who will start 2025 in style?

Manchester City have won their first league game in 17 of the last 18 calendar years, including each of the last 12 in a row since a 1-0 loss at Sunderland on New Year’s Day 2012.

West Ham haven’t lost their opening league game in any of the last seven calendar years (W4 D3), since a 2-0 loss to Man Utd in 2017. This is the first time they’re facing the reigning champions in their first league game of the year since 2006, and a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Bernardo: We are out of title race!

Hope for the Hammers?

Manchester City have failed to win either of their last two Premier League home games, despite opening the scoring both times (1-2 v Manchester United, 1-1 v Everton). They’ve not failed to win three consecutive home league games despite scoring first each time since December/January in 2003-04.

Pep on managing De Bruyne

History against West Ham

Man City have won 14 of their last 15 Premier League home games against West Ham (L1), including the last eight in a row since a 2-1 loss in September 2015.

West Ham are winless in their last 18 Premier League games against Man City, since a 2-1 away win in September 2015. Against no side have the Hammers had a longer winless run in their league history (also 18 vs Liverpool between 1983 and 1994).

West Ham have conceded at least once in each of their last 24 Premier League games against Man City – only against Sunderland have they had a longer run without a clean sheet in their league history (25 between 1923 and 1968), a run they ended with an 8-0 win with Geoff Hurst scoring six goals.

Man City have won all eight of their Premier League home games against West Ham under Pep Guardiola –only Arsène Wenger has a better 100% home win rate against an opponent in the competition (11/11 vs Leicester, 10/10 vs Stoke).

Lopetegui on replacing stars

Bowen is a big miss

Since the start of last season, Jarrod Bowen has been involved in 16 away Premier League goals (10 goals, 6 assists), double that of any of his West Ham teammates. Overall, only Michail Antonio (36 goals, 11 assists) and Mark Noble (20 goals, 13 assists) have more goals and assists in away games for the Hammers than Bowen (14 goals, 17 assists).

Pep Guardiola, still searching for momentum, names an unchanged Manchester City team from the side that beat Leicester, so Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish are on the bench.

We will have the teams from 1.45pm...

Chance for West Ham?

Sky Sports' Adam Bate at the Etihad Stadium:

“No sign of any snow in Manchester just yet but it is bitterly cold. Man City are all out of excuses though, they desperately need another win this afternoon as they seek to build some semblance of momentum in this most fraught of seasons for Pep Guardiola.

“West Ham? Well, they need to show a bit of resolve to avoid another beating like the one dished out by Liverpool at the London Stadium. There have been far too many of those under Julen Lopetegui and while City is always a daunting trip, this is a chance too.

“Looking forward to seeing how it plays out…”

Can Eze star vs Chelsea?

Sky Sports' William Bitibiri at Selhurst Park:

"Eberechi Eze scored what was only his second Premier League goal of the season last time out.

"Last year was a year of ups and downs for Crystal Palace's talisman as he was included in Gareth Southgate's Euros squad that reached the final in June but was dropped from the most recent selection.

"He has a real opportunity to make 2025 his own with a strong performance this afternoon, something we've seen him produce before, to lead Palace's survival charge while putting himself back into the international frame."

Jones Knows: Mateta to score in goal heavy draw

Sky Sports' football betting expert Lewis Jones:

Ipswich showed exactly why Chelsea won't be winning the Premier League anytime soon - this is a team that can be got at if you aggressively press them in key areas of the pitch. Omari Hutchinson and Liam Delap delivered that plan to perfection.

Club news, transfers and gossip: Palace | Chelsea

No team in the Premier League has lost possession more against a team press than Chelsea (113) and which team leads the way for pressures resulting in a turnover? Crystal Palace (578).

Despite their lowly league position, Oliver Glasner has got his team well-drilled, losing only to Arsenal in their last eight games - and they're creating quality chances in attack. Backing Palace to score should prove to be a profitable angle here and I've come down on Jean Phillipe Mateta to bag anytime at 5/2 with Sky Bet.

Delap's physicality terrorised Chelsea and Mateta is cut from the same cloth.

The Frenchman has scored 14 goals in his last 17 appearances at Selhurst Park.

Acheampong starts in a huge showing of faith from Maresca

Sky Sports' William Bitibiri at Selhurst Park:

"At just 18 years old Josh Achampong has been handed his first Premier start by Enzo Maresca and it's an exciting addition.

"He's impressed in the Conference League and in a cameo in the Carabao Cup and recently committed his long-term future to the Blues.

"Chelsea's defensive display during their defeat at Ipswich was concerning but Maresca has put his faith in Acheampong to hold his own and start the new year with a win picking him ahead of Tosin and Disasi."

Two Palace changes

Captain Marc Guehi returns to the Palace starting eleven after serving a suspension last time out. He replaces Chalobah in the team who is unable to play against his parent club.

Lerma comes into midfield replacing the injured Will Hughes.

Six Chelsea changes

Enzo Maresca names six changes to the side that were beaten last time out at Ipswich. Jorgensen, Disasi, Tosin, Joao Felix, Nkunku, and Madueke drop out.

It's a first start for 18-year-old Acheampong at the back with Sanchez reclaiming the spot between the sticks. Sancho, Neto Gusto and Jackson coming in.

Five minutes until team news...

Both teams will be announced in FIVE minutes, so stay tuned...

'Maresca put on a brave face as he delivered Fofana injury news'

Sky Sports News reporter James Cole who was at Chelsea's training ground yesterday:

"You could sense the enormity of the Wesley Fofana injury setback from the way Enzo Maresca spoke about his centre-back and his tone.

"'I am in love with Wes" and "With Wes we are a better team, a much, much better team" stood out for me.

"Maresca didn't rule out going in for another central defender in this window - but even if he tries it won't be easy.

"And the fact he has recalled Aaron Anselmino from his loan spell at Boca Juniors suggests he is planning with what he has got.

"Maresca was putting on a brave face - and the imminent return of Reece James and Romeo Lavia softens the blow somewhat - but you could sense the Chelsea boss was less upbeat today than before Christmas."

Tottenham 2-2 Wolves: More problems for Ange Postecoglou as Spurs held at home

Submitted by daniel on
Picture
Remote Image
Description

Tottenham made it just two wins in their last 10 games as Wolves struck late on to bag a 2-2 draw in front of a disgruntled home crowd.

Spurs looked to have the game in the bag as goals from Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson put them 2-1 up after Hee-Chan Hwang's opener.

However, despite losing key man Matheus Cunha at half-time to injury, Wolves found a late leveller through Jorgen Strand Larsen, meaning they have taken seven points from Vítor Pereira's first three games in charge.

Ange 'hurting immensely' over poor Tottenham form

The draw means Spurs, who also missed a penalty through Heung-Min Son at 1-1 and were booed off at full-time, have failed to win in their last five home games and leaves them down in 11th in the Premier League table with only 24 points from 19 games.

It also leaves boss Ange Postecoglou under huge pressure.

As it happened: How Spurs were held by Wolves

A torrid month of December, with poor results matched by a growing injury list, had seen Spurs slip down the table, but they looked on track to finish 2024 with a win after a strong finish to the first half.

Postecoglou's depleted side could not add a third or hold on, though, and their injury curse struck again as Destiny Udogie limped off in the second half with a hamstring injury.

Ange: It hurts me immensely

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou:

"It hurts me as I'm responsible.

"When I see how hard they're trying, it hurts even more. I wanted them to get rewards for their effort. It hurts immensely. It's my responsibility for where we're at right now.

"I'll keep going mate, we've got work to do in getting some help with these players. Our role is to help them perform to their best. I can see how hard they're trying. If we were at our sharpest we'd have got that third and fourth goal, we were inches away. We are lacking the dynamic movement we need. Where does Deki [Kulusevski] get the energy from? Dom, Sonny. These guys are fighting energy and aren't as sharp as we can be.

"We're dealing with a fair bit and we're not getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back to allow us to freshen up the team. When we get one back, we lose one."

Analysis: Kulusevski is a machine

Sky Sports' Lewis Jones:

If you could bottle and sell Dejan Kulusevski's secret formula you'd make millions.

Ange Postecoglou said after watching star man: "Where does Deki [Kulusevski] get the energy from?"

Such is his relentless energy, there is an argument forming that he might not be human.

Stream the Premier League with NOW

Playing his fifth straight 90 minutes in just 14 days, he yet again was Tottenham's best player in possession, creating a goal and three other chances, and their most hard-working without it.

No player on the pitch ran further than Kulusevski's 12.3km total and his 16 sprints was also the most of any player.

He must sleep well at night.

It's clear Spurs are running on empty though. Not only are they missing their best defenders, but their key men in attack also need a rest. Heung-Min Son just can't cope playing this type of relentless schedule now and his penalty miss showed it whilst Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson are giving it their all but are a yard short of their best. Good job Spurs have Kulusevski then.

His shoulders must be aching carrying this side.

Opta: Home struggles for Spurs

Tottenham (D2 L3) have failed to win in five successive home Premier League games for the first time since October 2008 (a run of eight), in what were Juande Ramos' final eight such games in

Pereira is just the fourth manager to go unbeaten in his first three top-flight league games in charge of Wolves (W2 D1) after Andy Beattie in 1964, Ronnie Allen in 1967 and Sammy Chung in 1977.

Tottenham conceded the opening goal at home in the Premier League for the 15th time in 2024, the most a side has done so in a single year in the competition.

Son Heung-min's saved penalty against Wolves is just the second time he's failed to convert a penalty for Tottenham, seeing a spot kick against Aston Villa in the Premier League in February 2020 saved by Pepe Reina.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou accepts responsibility and 'hurting immensely' over current Spurs slump

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ange Postecoglou admits he is "hurting immensely" over Tottenham's slump in form but still feels they can compete towards the top this season in the Premier League.

Injury-hit Spurs were on track to end a torrid month of December on a high after first-half goals by Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson cancelled out Hee-Chan Hwang's brilliant opener for Wolves.

Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son also squandered a 43rd-minute penalty, but it did not appear to be too costly until visiting substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen smashed home with three minutes left to ensure the spoils were shared in north London.

Spurs will start 2025 in the bottom half after one win from their last seven Premier League fixtures and yet Postecoglou rallied around his depleted squad, with Destiny Udogie the latest to limp off to become their ninth unavailable player.

"It hurts me as I'm responsible," he said.

"When I see how hard the players are trying, it hurts even more.

"We are lacking the dynamic movement we need. Where does Deki [Kulusevski] get the energy from? Dom [Solanke], Sonny. These guys are fighting energy and aren't as sharp as we can be.

"We're dealing with a fair bit and we're not getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back to allow us to freshen up the team. When we get one back, we lose one."

Ange: League still 'farly tight'

The draw means Spurs, who were booed off at full-time, have failed to win in their last five home games and leaves them down in 11th in the Premier League table with only 24 points from 19 games.

However, Postecoglou isn't giving up hope of making a charge towards the top end of the Premier League when his key players return.

"It's still fairly tight," he said.

"At some point we will get a healthy squad and we'll be able to perform at a high level. We've shown we can beat anyone.

"There's always a chance to go on a run. That is secondary to getting support to the players both physically and mentally and in terms of numbers."

Tottenham were sixth and only three points off Chelsea after a 4-0 win at Manchester City on November 23, but are now closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

Postecoglou refused to be too hard on his players, who will get two days off with Spurs set to have a rare clear midweek ahead of Saturday's visit of Newcastle where Bentancur will also be suspended.

He added: "We have to try to get some support for the players. Both mentally and physically and in terms of numbers to give them the opportunity to play at their best.

"They're very disappointed, but it's not through the want of trying."
