Mathys Tel transfer: Bayern Munich forward on his way to England to seal Tottenham move

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has landed in England ahead of a proposed loan move to Tottenham that could become permanent.

When it emerged that Tel was travelling to England on Monday it was widely reported that the deal would be for a straight loan.

However, Spurs have been negotiating with Bayern throughout Deadline Day to insert a buy option into the deal and appear to have been successful.

The loan deal includes an option to buy for £45m (€55m) and Tel would sign a six-year deal if the option is activated at the end of the season.

Tel has passed his Tottenham medical and is set to become the club's third winter window signing after the arrivals of Kevin Danso and Antonin Kinsky.

Manchester United's interest in Tel ended as Bayern wanted a £5m loan fee with no buy clause in the deal.

It was seen as an expensive risk and developing the player only for Bayern or another club to benefit at the end of the temporary spell.

Tel turned down the chance to sign for Tottenham in a permanent transfer last week after the clubs had agreed a £50m deal.

Negotiations stalled on Friday with Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United also interested in France international Tel.

But in a massive U-turn, Tel has changed his mind after a long conversation with Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou about how he will be used.

The news emerged when Tel's agent posted a picture on his story of himself and the teenager aboard a private plane.

It represents a further boost for Postecoglou, who has faced mounting external pressure but watched his depleted team make it three wins from their last four matches with a 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday.

The addition of centre-back Kevin Danso from Lens was also confirmed on Sunday as Tottenham look to salvage their campaign, with the prospect of trophy success still possible due to participation in the Carabao Cup, Europa League and FA Cup.

Spurs face a crucial week with a trip to Liverpool on Thursday, live on Sky Sports, to determine who qualifies for next month's Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

An FA Cup fourth-round tie with Aston Villa follows three days later and Postecoglou could have Tel available for both fixtures if he receives international clearance and a work permit in time.

'Tel has changed his mind - his plane is heading to London!'

SSN reporter Michael Bridge:

"We say never say never on Deadline Day but Tel has done a U-turn and has said 'yes' to Tottenham. Incredible news.

"There are reports there are no obligations or options to buy but what we do know - and there is a picture of Tel and his agent on a plane - the plane looks like it is going to London and not Manchester.

"Huge news. Tel has changed his mind..."

'Tel is a striker, not a winger!'

Sky in Germany's Florian Plettenberg speaking to Sky Sports News:

"This is a very good solution for Tel, Tottenham and Bayern.

"He has reconsidered his decision. He was in talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. I'm convinced that in the end Spurs have presented the best project in order to get match practice. This is the most important for Tel.

"Now it's up to Postecoglou to place him in the right position. He's not a winger, he's a striker. Let him strike, let him score goals!"

Analysis: Why Tel is in demand

Sky Sports' Nick Wright:

Tel has been a peripheral figure for Bayern Munich this season, playing only 344 minutes across their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns without scoring. But at 19, he remains a thrilling talent with plenty to offer and plenty of room for improvement.

He demonstrated his immense potential last season, contributing nine goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League, despite mostly featuring as a substitute, and averaging an eye-catching 1.15 goal involvements per 90 minutes.

Context is important, of course. Many of those substitute appearances came at points in games where Bayern were already several goals up. But his talent is not in doubt. It is what convinced Bayern to pay roughly £23m to land him at the age of only 17 in 2022.

Tel is quick, strong in the air and, crucially, an accomplished finisher. His versatility is another asset.

As shown in the graphic above, Tel's minutes at Bayern have been split across different positions. He has played the highest share of minutes on the left, where he is able to cut in on his right foot. But he is also adept with his left foot and has been used on the right, as a central striker, and even in midfield.

He would have to adapt to new surroundings in the Premier League, of course. Hitting the ground running would be a challenge mid-season. But it is easy to understand the interest, even if he would not come cheaply to any side looking to sign him permanently.

Description

Crystal Palace rejected a bid from Tottenham for England defender Marc Guehi over the weekend.

It is another setback for Spurs in their ongoing search for reinforcements in what is proving to be a frustrating January transfer window for the north London club.

Tottenham have also been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Fikayo Tomori from AC Milan, with the player understood to have rejected the opportunity to move to Tottenham.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel had also rejected a permanent move to Spurs but in a dramatic U-turn on Deadline Day, the 19-year-old is now flying to England after agreeing a switch following a long conversation with Ange Postecoglou.

Sky Sports News understands the structure of the Tel deal is still being negotiated between the clubs.

It is expected Guehi will remain at Palace during this window. Newcastle and Spurs could revive their interest in the summer when he enters the final year of his deal.

Chelsea were also keen on re-signing Guehi earlier this window before they decided to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Palace.

Spurs are looking to add another defender after the loan (with obligation to buy) signing of Kevin Danso. They ended their pursuit of Chelsea defender Axel Disasi earlier on Deadline Day.

Ange Postecoglou's side has suffered several injuries in the centre of defence. Radu Dragusin picked up a worrying knee injury last week in their Europa League victory over Elfsborg, with Cristian Romero also on the sidelines.

Micky van de Ven has only just returned from a long-term injury and was not named in Spurs' matchday squad in the win over Brentford on Sunday to manage his minutes ahead of Thursday night's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool, live on Sky Sports.

'A major show of solidarity and support from Palace'

Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground:

"Spurs really do need another centre-back. There are reports that Radu Dragusin's injury is more serious than first feared. They signed Kevin Danso from Lens on Saturday evening for around £21m.

"Deadline Day is usually quite busy here and stories come from out of nowhere. The story we're getting now, via widespread reports, is that Crystal Palace have rejected a bid worth up to £70m from Spurs for Marc Guehi.

"That is a major development - major money as well that Palace have turned down. Given his contract length [Guehi's deal expires in 2026] that's a real show of solidarity and support from Palace's side for keeping Guehi.

"We brought you news in the summer of the four rejected bids from Newcastle for Guehi, who was happy to stay."

Man Utd toothless as Spence stars for Spurs - Premier League hits and misses

Man Utd toothless without a striker

The only striker to start the game in Crystal Palace's 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford scored both of the goals. Jean-Philippe Mateta showed what a proper centre-forward can do - and what Ruben Amorim's side continue to sorely lack.

There are numerous issues at United, wing-backs who cannot create, defenders being outwitted and a ponderous midfield, but it was the sight of Kobbie Mainoo playing up front that highlighted the obvious contrast between the two teams on Sunday.

Man Utd 0-2 Crystal Palace - Match report & highlights

As it happened | Teams | Match stats

The out-of-position teenager did have his moments early on. He set up a good chance for Alejandro Garnacho and then struck the post himself. But that was it. The trouble that Mateta caused the defenders at the other end of the pitch was a different matter.

United just look toothless. It is 16 games since they led at half-time. The only first-half goal they have scored in their last 14 in all competitions was Bruno Fernandes' penalty in the defeat to Brighton. On this occasion, the second half was probably even worse.

What the decision to go with Mainoo says about Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee is a matter for speculation. But both of them struggled when they came on, looking totally devoid of confidence. United limp on but they continue to be a tough watch.

There is little evidence to suggest anyone left at the club, given Marcus Rashford's departure, has the pedigree to change things. To the transfer market, then? Speaking afterwards, Amorim seem more concerned about throwing good money after bad.

"We are trying everything to improve the team, without doing the mistakes of the past, trying to balance the urgency of the moment." United need help. But the question is not just whether they can afford the right striker. It is whether they can really afford to wait.

Spence stands up to be counted ahead of Salah test

Djed Spence take a bow. The Tottenham defender, playing out of position at left-back, did a fine job on Sunday marshalling Bryan Mbeumo. Next up? Mohamed Salah.

The stats show he won eight of his 10 duels at the Gtech and no-one won more tackles in a Spurs shirt. Impressive. But there were also the other moments which made a difference - how he used his strength to shoulder the Bees ace off the ball to win a throw, how he forced Mbeumo to turn back rather than cross, his recovery pace to shut down a Brentford charge down that side…

Brentford 0-2 Tottenham - Match report & highlights

As it happened | Teams | Match stats

After being ineligible in midweek and injured against Leicester, this was a timely return to the team - and underlined the progress Spurs' full-back has made.

"He's been outstanding since he's come into the team," said Postecoglou afterwards. "He loves the challenge of taking on the elite. Bryan is right up there, especially here. You can see he loves that challenge. That was another reason we kept Micky [van de Ven] on ice. He'll be important for us until Destiny gets back."

He'll certainly be important on Thursday, in the Carabao Cup semi-final at Liverpool when he has to contain this season's top performer, Salah...

Peter Smith

No home comforts for Brentford right now

Brentford's fortress has been conquered more than usual in recent weeks - they are now winless in six at home across all competitions, with their loss to Spurs their fifth defeat in that run.

Perhaps the early kick-off on Sunday isn't ideal for generating an intimidating atmosphere but since holding the best home record in the league earlier this campaign, Brentford have struggled in west London of late.

Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool have featured in that run, so they have faced tough opposition - but this weekend Thomas Frank will be left reflecting on how his side failed to make long spells in Spurs' final third count.

Thirty-seven crosses, 48 touches in the box and 2.29xG added up to nothing.

Away days against West Ham and Leicester are up next and Frank will be hoping for a positive return from those fixtures so they can capitalise on their next home game, against Everton, and return to picking up important points at their HQ.

Peter Smith

'Nobody doing it better than Jean-Philippe Mateta'

If you had asked football fans a year ago whether Jean-Philippe Mateta was one of the top strikers in the Premier League they would have simply laughed and called you a fool.

His rise under Oliver Glasner has been phenomenal. Manchester United can only wish to have a striker possessing such power, athleticism and ruthless goalscoring ability. He makes defenders defend with his movement and his sheer brute force when in full flow is a sight to behold - as identified by his jaw-dropping 80-yard run from one end of the pitch to the other in the first half where he left four United defenders in his wake.
