Ten Hag aware of Tuchel talks: 'Man Utd decided they had the best trainer'
Erik ten Hag has publicly admitted that he is aware talks took place between Manchester United and other managers, including Thomas Tuchel.
Ten Hag, who found out this week he would remain United boss for the 2024/25 season and is now set to sign a new contract, appeared on Dutch television as a pundit ahead of England's Euro 2024 opener with Serbia.
Speaking to broadcaster NPO, the 54-year-old said: "Everyone has heard that they have spoken to several candidates. That's no secret.
"In the Netherlands that is not done. You are not even allowed to talk to another club if there is a current trainer there. But in England the rules and laws are different.
"In the end, they came to the conclusion that they have the best trainer."
Ten Hag had been on holiday in Ibiza when his future was settled, with INEOS deciding the Dutchman was the right man to lead the club forward following a post-season review.
"As in any organisation, there is an evaluation and that seems very sensible to me," Ten Hag said.
"We had a good discussion and various topics were discussed. One of the conclusions is that we will extend the contract, but we still have to reach an agreement."

Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal are among the clubs to have contacted Paris Saint-Germain over the signing of Xavi Simons, according to L'Equipe.
Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the 21-year-old, but PSG are not planning on selling the forward this summer and intend to loan him out again.
Simons spent last term on loan at RB Leipzig, scoring 10 goals and registering 15 assists.

Manchester United have announced work will begin on a £50m refurb of the men's first-team building at Carrington next week.
The club posted pictures on their Instagram page of the plans for their training base, which aims to deliver "a world-class facility, creating a high-performance environment for players and staff".
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS invested in the club, he made it clear a major ambition was to upgrade the club's training facilities.

Man Utd to invest £50m in modernising training ground
Manchester United are investing £50m into modernising the men's first team's training facilities at Carrington.
Work will commence from next week, with the focus on "creating a high-performance collaborative environment".
A club statement read: "The £50 million project will result in all areas of the building being refurbished to deliver a world-class football facility with a positive culture to support future success."

Branthwaite, Yoro, De Ligt - Man Utd's centre-back search
Manchester United appear to be making a fast start to the transfer window with INEOS' new sporting structure in place.
Centre-back is the priority as Raphael Varane is leaving as a free agent at the end of the month.
Reports on Wednesday linked United with Bayern Munich's Matthijs De Ligt, Lille's Leny Yoro and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite.
Sky Sports News understands Branthwaite is the top target, with a formal approach expected.
Everton reportedly want up to £70m, but United will look to negotiate that down, as they are likely to be relying on player sales to fund some of their other summer deals.
The Athletic reports Yoro, 18, is viewed as a "unique market opportunity separate to other targets", although United face competition from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
De Ligt is being "closely monitored" at Bayern, according to Sky in Germany, which suggests he is less of a priority as things stand.

Liverpool and Manchester United are actively pursuing a deal to sign Lille's teenage centre-back Leny Yoro, according to The Athletic.
Real Madrid are viewed as favourites to sign the 18-year-old by Liverpool and Man Utd, the report claims, but both clubs are said to be pushing hard for the transfer.
The Athletic adds that Yoro, one of the most promising young players in Europe, is viewed as a "unique market opportunity separate to other targets" by the Premier League sides.
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Yoro.

Manchester United are monitoring Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to Sky in Germany.
Erik ten Hag worked with De Ligt at Ajax and United are said to be in the market for a centre-back.
Sky in Germany report that De Ligt would be available for a suitable offer with Stuttgart's Hiroki Ito expected to sign today and Jonathan Tah another top target.
De Ligt is in the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024.

Ten Hag set to be offered two-year Man Utd extension
Erik ten Hag is likely to be offered a two-year extension to his current deal at Manchester United, according to The Telegraph.
It was decided, after a meeting on Tuesday, that Ten Hag would remain at the club following months of uncertainty over his future.
The Dutchman wanted to continue at Old Trafford and has agreed to talks over extending his deal, which expires next summer.
Ten Hag was disappointed United spoke to other managers during their review but accepted his future was in doubt and does not believe he has been fatally undermined.
Mitten: Clarity is key for United progress
United We Stand editor Andy Mitten told Sky Sports:
"The clarity on Erik ten Hag's future is good news and it's what most fans wanted in various polls, where between 75 per cent and 80 per cent wanted him to stay. That was conducted after the FA Cup final it should be said.
"It's taken a few weeks but it's an important time for decisions to be made. The fans are still on a buzz after the FA Cup final win but United simply must improve next year.
"There's no chance he will keep his job if they finish eighth next season but there's a lot of mitigation given the injuries and Ineos took that into consideration.
"Talk of a new contract is there to allay fears Ten Hag will then lose his job at the first opportunity [of a dip in form] next season. He will know better tha anybody that he needs to make a good start to next season.
"United will play in the Europa League next season which is probably their level at the moment but there needs to be a significant improvement.
"If not, there will be a similar situation as we saw with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer losing his job in November and Jose Mourinho did so in December. Other managers may become available in time but for now he retains faith of the owners and most of the fans."
What can United aim for next season?
United We Stand editor Andy Mitten:
"The realistic target for next season is finishing in the top four, and no one would complain about another cup win. But he must start well as even on the opening day of last season against Wolves, United were very unconvincing in victory, even with a fully fit squad.
"United had gone six years without a cup before 2023. He's done really well with brining through Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Of course there are issues, but it's all about wins.
"Jose Mourinho had signed a new contract in 2018 but by the end of the year he was out of a job so I don't think it's that important whether Erik ten Hag sings a new deal or not.
"There will always be pressure around managing United and Ten Hag knows this. There's not an appetite to keep firing managers given how much it would cost to get rid of him.
"That was a consideration as well, to comply with PSR rules."
Mitten: Ten Hag has had to work with unprecedented change at Man Utd
United We Stand editor Andy Mitten:
"Ten Hag has had a lot of left-field things to deal with which were certainly not his making; from dealing with player issues such as Mason Greenwood and then the strategic review.
"Hopefully that has all passed now. Hopefully, the injuries won't be as severe as they have been. Hopefully, there will be a better football structure at United but this is an idealised version.
"Ineos talked about best-in-class appointments but there have been complications there. The new chief executive Omar Berrada starts work in a month's time, we don't know when Dan Ashworth is going to start.
"There's been a lot of change at the club. I've been covering Manchester United for 35 years since I was a kid and I've never seen so many changes as this year.
"You're talking seven of the nine senior management positions have changed over the past couple of months and some of them were very good at their jobs.
"The new people have to come in and be even better at their jobs. History has taught me to be slightly circumspect."

Silva among managers to speak to Man Utd before FA Cup win
Manchester United held a series of interviews with potential replacements for Erik ten Hag before the FA Cup final win over Manchester City, according to The Athletic.
Ten Hag led United to a surprise victory over their rivals at Wembley - a factor that contributed to him retaining his role as manager following INEOS's post-season review.
But United endured disappointing Premier League and Champions League campaigns, and The Athletic reported the club held serious conversations with Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi about replacing Ten Hag.
Mauricio Pochettino also held talks with the club, while Brentford's Thomas Frank and Fulham's Marco Silva's had face-to-face meetings with United.
Man Utd players expected Ten Hag to be sacked
Shocked Manchester United players thought Erik ten Hag would be sacked before finding out the manager is staying, according to The Telegraph.
It is understood United players only found out the club had decided to keep Ten Hag when news broke late on Tuesday night.
Last week, the squad thought Ten Hag would leave the club and still believed that was the most likely scenario after United completed their end-of-season review.
Most of United's players are on international duty, which meant they were not privy to inside information and were largely kept out of the loop.
United spoke to a number of managers before deciding to keep Ten Hag, which contributed to the belief among players that his days were numbered.
However, most of the players are said to be pleased the uncertainty over United's managerial situation has been ended and that the club can now move on with their summer plans.
Has Ten Hag been undermined by the end-of-season review?
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich told Sky Sports:
"There's no doubt [speaking to other options] can undermine the manager. There's no doubt about that.
"But when you're at one of the world's biggest clubs, there's always going to be rumours when things aren't going to plan.
"Winning the FA Cup was the one saving grace, but it was the worst Premier League season ever and there were a host of problems.
"In terms of the dressing room, there are always ones who support the manager and they tend to be the ones who are playing.
"The ones who aren't playing will secretly want to see the manager leave as it means the slate gets wiped clean. He needs to take advantage of this now to ensure we're not speaking about the same thing 10 games into the new season.
"In terms of backing him in the transfer market, we aren't privy to the conversations behind closed doors. It's for them to sort out but in terms of a new contract, I don't think it will be long-term.
"Ten Hag should be able to back himself [even if it's a short-term deal]. The most important for him is to get off to a flyer next season."
Does Ten Hag news impact Southgate's future?
Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett in Germany:
"You would presume that given we know for now that Erik ten Hag is staying at Manchester United, that would seem to mean Gareth Southgate is staying put with England and that his opportunity of becoming the next United manager has been put to bed.
"But from what we understand, Ten Hag is far from satisficed with how this end-of-season review has been carried out.
"His contract is due to expire at the end of next season and he would like that to be extended further in a show of faith. Dan Ashworth worked with Southgate at the FA and is the incoming sporting director at United.
"He is still on gardening leave. On the face of it, it might actually make the chances of Southgate becoming the next United manager easier as the England manager has said his future will become clearer at the end of the Euros.
"Ashworth isn't in post at the moment, but maybe in the next few weeks and months. For as long as Ten Hag hasn't signed a new contract, there will still be doubts.
"My sources are telling me that it's not a given that Southgate is lined up as the next United manager even if they ultimately decide to let Ten Hag go at some point in the future."
