Description

Tottenham qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with a deserved 2-0 victory at already-eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt as Randal Kolo Muani scored just a day after a minor car accident.

A tyre blowout on Tuesday delayed Kolo Muani's arrival in Germany, but the forward overcame the incident to hit an opener against his former side just 65 seconds after half-time.

Substitute Dominic Solanke's 77th-minute strike made the victory safe to secure a fourth-placed finish, which gives Spurs second-leg home advantage in the last 16 and quarter-finals.

Tottenham will face either Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge or Galatasaray in the round of 16.

Tottenham's European form is in stark contrast to their domestic struggles, with Thomas Frank's side sitting 14th in the Premier League and eight points above the drop zone.

It is deja vu for Spurs after lifting the Europa League last season amid a 17th-placed Premier League finish.

Spurs won at Frankfurt last April on the way to Europa League glory, and it once again proved to be a happy hunting ground as they dominated throughout to avoid next month's two-legged knockout play-off, which will be a huge relief to Frank amid an injury crisis.

Frank hails 'incredible' achievement

With 14 players unavailable for the trip to Frankfurt, a depleted Spurs side put Saturday's disappointing 2-2 draw at Burnley behind them to relieve some pressure on Frank once again, like last week's Champions League home win over Borussia Dortmund did.

A dominant display in Germany, which saw Spurs have 15 shots, will give Frank's side some confidence ahead of Sunday's Premier League home game against Manchester City, live on Sky Sports.

He said at his post-match press conference: "To actually finish fourth in the Champions League is incredible, 17 points, so there are a lot of positives.

"I think very happy with the result, but even more happy with the performance. I think we looked in control more or less throughout the game.

"I am very proud of the players and the character shown. Dortmund and this game had 12 outfield players available, so a lot of players had to push through 90 minutes, maybe not being there, so the character and mentality is big in the team.

"A more than well-deserved 2-0 win, away from home, in the Champions League."

He added: "We have just changed the system to the 3-4-3, so the last three games we played i,t so it will only get better and better.

"I actually think our performances now in 10 games have been better and better and better. We haven't got all the results we wanted, but the last three games were very positive and that is what we have to build on.

"We are working very, very hard and it is nice the result and performance show the bits we are working on, it's getting closer and closer. Now we need to be even more consistent and even turn those games to more wins going forward."

Frank: Never any doubt Kolo Muani would not play

Frank also revealed there were never any doubts that Kolo Muani would not play following his minor car accident.

"He was ready," Frank said. "If there was any doubt that he couldn't play, then we wouldn't have done it, but he was fine.

"There was no physical or mental aspect from the accident.

"I was very happy that he scored the goal. He looked like a threat. He was heavily involved in the disallowed goal [Xavi Simons' in the third minute]. He had great actions throughout the game.

"I'm very happy he got the goal, and I asked him, 'Please start scoring against teams other than [just] your former clubs'.

"But we know when you come to a new club and new country, it's never straightforward - and never in the Premier League. I hope it can give him some confidence."

When is the draw for the last 16?

The draw for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals takes place on February 27.

When are the knockout stages?

Knockout play-offs: February 17-18 and 24-25

Opta stats: Only rivals Arsenal boast better set-piece record than Spurs

Fifty per cent of Tottenham's last six goals in all competitions have been via set pieces (2x corner, 1x free kick), while only Arsenal (26) have scored more set-piece goals than Spurs among Premier League sides across all competitions this season since the FIFA Club World Cup (20).

Tottenham have scored the opening goal in each of their last five Champions League games, with this their longest ever streak across the European Cup.

Tottenham Guglielmo Vicario kept the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in this season's Champions League group stage (6), while it's the most shutouts of any Spurs goalkeeper across a single season in the competition.

Cristian Romero has been directly involved in nine goals for Tottenham Hotspur across all competitions this season (6 goals, 3 assists), as many goal contributions as he managed in his first four campaigns for Spurs combined.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

They survive. Van Dijk makes first contact and gets decent distance on his header.

Willock is down having been trod on by Konate. Ouch.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Excited for this one.

Up and running at Anfield.

Ekitike-Wirtz link up key for Liverpool

Sky Sports' Laura Hunter:

"Be interesting to see how effectively and how often Florian Wirtz can find Hugo Ekitike in good positions tonight. That combination will be key when Newcastle bank up defensively. Then you've got natural width from Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo. That front four should score goals - at a better rate than they have been so far this season!"

Destined for late drama?

No side has scored more goals in the final 15 minutes of Premier League games this season than Liverpool (13), while only Bournemouth (13) have conceded more in this time frame than Newcastle (12).

Team formations

Newcastle struggle on the road

Only Nottingham Forest (7) and Wolves (7) have failed to score in more Premier League away games than Newcastle this season (6).

Have Liverpool lost Anfield advantage?

Since beating Bournemouth 4-2 on the opening weekend, Liverpool haven’t scored more than twice in any of their last 10 Premier League home games.

They’re averaging just 1.45 goals per game at Anfield this term, their lowest in a campaign since 2011/12 (1.26).

WATCH: Slot predicts quiet Deadline Day at Liverpool

As it stands

Chelsea have come from two nil down to lead West Ham 3-2. Heartbreak for the Hammers. It also means Liverpool cannot overtake Chelsea with a win tonight, now only able to displace Man Utd - who play tomorrow.

PL Predictions: Lack of right-back a problem for Liverpool

With Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley both unavailable, Arne Slot could be forced into a workaround at right-back and Wataru Endo is the obvious emergency option after filling in there in midweek. That positional tweak completely changes how his card price should be viewed.

Endo is aggressive, front-footed and far more comfortable stepping into duels than jockeying wide in space. Drop him into a full-back role and you're asking him to defend large areas against pace and direct running. And Newcastle are one of the worst opponents you can face when learning on the job out wide.

If Endo does start at right-back, he'll be dealing with Anthony Gordon, potentially supported by Lewis Hall, which is a nightmare match-up profile. Gordon drives straight at defenders and invites contact. The numbers underline that threat as six different opponents have been carded against Gordon in the Premier League this season. Endo's price of 5/2 with Sky Bet to be carded, if he starts as full-back, is a real runner.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

LAST TIME OUT: NEWCASTLE 0-2 ASTON VILLA

LAST TIME OUT: BOURNEMOUTH 3-2 LIVERPOOL

Four Newcastle changes - Wissa benched

Eddie Howe has made four swaps from the team that were beat at St James' Park by Aston Villa. Sven Botman, Lewis Miley, Yoane Wissa and Joelinton all drop out - the latter is sidelined with injury, as is skipper Bruno Guimaraes.

Dan Burn returns to captain the side, and in come Anthony Elanga, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey. There is no recognised striker in Newcastle's XI - looks like Anthony Gordon will operate through the middle as a false 9.

Newcastle team news

Newcastle team: Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Tonali, Willock, Ramsey, Gordon, Elanga, Barnes.

One Liverpool change

One Liverpool change from last week's bruising defeat at Bournemouth, and it's enforced. Jeremie Frimpong has since been ruled out with injury, which means Dominik Szoboszlai is going to have to resume his role as emergency right-back cover.

The one to come in is Hugo Ekitike. Mo Salah and Florian Wirtz both start in attack.

Randal Kolo Muani: Tottenham forward 'fine' after 'minor accident' ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt game - Sky Sports
Description

Tottenham forward Randal Kolo Muani was involved in a “minor” car accident on Tuesday, but is "fine", according to head coach Thomas Frank and is expected to feature in Wednesday's Champions League clash at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Kolo Muani took part in open training at the club's Hotspur Way facility in Enfield, but pictures circulated on social media that showed the on-loan attacker and team-mate Wilson Odobert standing next to a black Ferrari that had sustained damage.

It is understood that the two players were travelling in separate cars, and it was Kolo Muani's car which had a tyre blowout. Odobert was following his team-mate in his own car and had pulled over out of concern.

The pair did not travel with the squad, but they will fly out on Tuesday evening, and Frank "fully expects" both to be available for the game in Germany.

Frank said at his pre-match press conference: "Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert are both fine.

"Everyone involved in that accident is fine.

"It was a tyre blowing up, so the two of them are a little bit delayed, but they will land later tonight."

He added: "They are fine - it was on the way to the airport."

Asked whether they are in the right frame of mind to play on Wednesday, the Dane replied: "That is my absolute understanding on everything.

"I haven't spoken to them personally yet because the first message is that they are fine.

"They are flying out later, and I fully expect both to be available for tomorrow."
