Thomas Frank: Tottenham boss defiant despite being booed off and own fans chanting 'you're getting sacked' - Sky Sports
Description

Under-pressure Tottenham boss Thomas Frank remained defiant despite being loudly booed off by his own fans, who chanted at him, 'You're getting sacked in the morning' following Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to West Ham.

Callum Wilson's last-gasp winner sparked toxic scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the South Stand called for the Dane to go after a run of eight defeats in 14 matches.

Frank said of the boos and sack chants at his post-match press conference: "Of course, I probably have had better times. I understand - I'm the man in charge, so the blame will go to me. That's fair, no problem in that sense.

"As long as they are backing the players, doing everything they can to support them and drive them forward, and we will keep going forward."

Frank struck a confident tone in his post-match press conference, likening his job to turning a "super tanker" around with Spurs sitting 14th in the table, 10 points above the drop zone.

The Dane exuded a man who has the backing of the Spurs hierarchy in a week which saw him handed a new midfielder in Conor Gallagher and a new first-team assistant coach, John Heitinga.

But neither had the desired effect on Saturday as Spurs were embarrassed by their relegation-threatened London rivals.

Ahead of kick-off, Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham released an open letter in the matchday programme which addressed several issues, including the relationship between the club and the fans and player trading.

"I've seen the letter," Frank said, "and I took six to eight positive things out of the letter, not the negative things.

"What I take out of that letter is that a club, an executive team with Vinai on top, that are aligned and know that this is a big transition phase and it's a super tanker, we're turning in the right direction.

"And there's a lot of good signs behind the scenes, also in some of the performances.

"But of course, when you lose last minute to one of your rivals, it's very emotional in football, and there'll be noise.

"And that noise we need to keep out there and get head down and keep walking, keep doing the right thing."

Frank also faced questions over team leaks before kick-off, but he insisted he was not worried about the issue.

Frank: We're close to something very good

West Ham ended their 10-game winless run, becoming the second Premier League team this month to get back to winning ways against Spurs after Bournemouth won 3-2 to end their 11-game winless run.

Last Saturday's FA Cup third round home defeat to Aston Villa means it is now three straight losses for Frank.

But Frank believes his side are "close to something very good" despite a winless start to 2026.

Asked why he deserved more time, Frank replied: "If you're not winning enough, we know that you're not getting enough support from the fans.

"But when we're winning, it will change when we start winning again, which we will do. Not in doubt of that. I also think you can look a little bit at the performances.

"Let's say the Bournemouth and the Villa and this game here, if the players stop running or stop doing anything or not working hard, and we were not the team that was closest to winning, then you can say, okay. But I think the team is working very hard.

"And I still think, and I know it sounds a little bit crazy, that we're close to something very good than further away.

He added: "I can promise that I'm sitting here and giving everything every single day.

"I feel the trust from everyone and there's only one way, and it's to keep going."

That trust will now be tested to its limit.

Sherwood pinpoints one thing saving Frank

Sky Sports' Tim Sherwood had labelled the game between Spurs and West Ham as 'El Sackico', but the ex-Spurs midfielder believes the only thing saving Frank is the lack of candidates to replace him.

He told Soccer Saturday after the defeat: "It doesn't look good.

"Spurs cannot win a game at home, and they have lost to their local rivals, who appear doomed at the bottom of the Premier League.

"The pressure is on Frank. But the only thing that might save his job is who could come in?

"They won a trophy last year and finished 17th. They aren't going to win a trophy this year. They are out of both cups and towards the bottom of the league.

"They are still in the Champions League, but it is highly unlikely they win that. Where do Spurs go from here?"

Romero: 'This is a disaster for us'

Another home game awaits Frank next as Spurs host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday before a must-win Premier League trip to relegation strugglers Burnley.

Should Spurs suffer defeat at Turf Moor and West Ham win, then Tottenham would be seven points above the drop - and the alarm bells will be ringing if they are somehow already not.

Spurs captain Cristian Romero, who scored the equaliser in the defeat to West Ham, admits the situation is disastrous with Tottenham having won just two of their 11 home league games this season.

He told Sky Sports: "We need to stay together, work hard, come back tomorrow to the training ground. It's a disaster in this moment for us.

"Tomorrow we will train in silence, work hard again, and midweek we have another big match.

"At this moment, this is a disaster for us. We played sometimes good, sometimes bad. We must work hard and go again.

"Its' a difficult moment for us. We are not the best on the pitch."

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham: Hammers' last-gasp win piles pressure on Thomas Frank - Sky Sports
Description

Callum Wilson's last-gasp strike piled the pressure on Thomas Frank as Tottenham were booed off at half-time and full-time following their 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The game was dubbed 'El Sackico' ahead of the game by former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood because of the pressure on both Frank and Nuno Espirito Santo at West Ham, and it was the visitors who held the early advantage after Crysencio Summerville's 15th-minute goal.

Spurs were second best for the majority of the first half and looked short of ideas before the boos rang out at half-time.

Frank thought his side had rescued a point after Cristian Romero's bullet header (64), but Wilson's stoppage-time strike condemned the hosts to a ninth league defeat of the season and led to Tottenham's South Stand calling for Frank's dismissal.

The final whistle sparked a mass exodus at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The home fans had seen enough but those left started "sacked in the morning" chants aimed at Frank, who was then booed again as he applauded the fans on his way to the tunnel.

On the chants, Frank said: "I've had probably had better times.

"I understand, I'm the man in charge. As long as they back the players to drive them forward, and we will keep going forward."

It was in stark contrast to the West Ham players as they celebrated with their fans after ending a long 10-game winless run in the Premier League as they breathed some life into their bid to beat the drop.

Hammers match winner Wilson said: "It's massive today, the boys played fantastic.

"I think we deserved to be in front on the whole, especially with the chances we had first half. It wasn't to be, but thankfully we ended up getting the three points."

Frank: It hurts a lot

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank on the defeat to West Ham to Sky Sports:

"It's tough to take, it hurts a lot. The boys put everything in, and that's a sign of a squad that is fighting, doing everything they can to try and win. It's fair to say if there was to be a winner in the second half then it should have been us.

"The way we came back into it, the same as at Bournemouth, both games we lost in the last minute. That makes it emotionally tough for the players, me, the club, the fans, everyone. We conceded on a deflected shot and a last-minute corner, which we should have done better with.

"We pushed very hard, to have that extra freshness to put on the pitch would have helped with more quality.

"It's tough times, the only thing we can do is move forward. We have to go again, it's hurting so much, incredibly so for everyone at the club that puts in such hard work.

"But we can only be disappointed and emotionally down for 24 hours, then we must go again on Tuesday."

'It doesn't look good for Frank'

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood on Soccer Saturday:

"It doesn't look good. Spurs cannot win a game at home and they have lost to their local rivals, who appear doomed at the bottom of the Premier League.

"The pressure is on Frank. But the only thing that might save his job is who could come in?

"They won a trophy last year and finished 17th. They aren't going to win a trophy this year. They are out of both cups and towards the bottom of the league. They are still in the Champions League but it is highly unlikely they win that.

"Where do Spurs go from here?"

Nuno: We believe we can beat relegation

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on his side's chances of avoiding relegation after victory at Spurs:

"It means a lot for our fans, who were there cheering for us. It's special to do it in the last moments of the game, because we have been on the other side of that many times this season.

"We stared really well. The way we were organised, not allowing Spurs to go easy, always trying to press and recover.

"When we had the ball we had good chances and combinations. First half we played really good football.

"We believe [we can escape relegation]. We have to worry about ourselves, work harder and commit more. I'm really proud of the way the players have been dealing with this situation. It's a tough one, but they are determined to turn it around."

Thomas Frank: Under-pressure Tottenham boss faces pivotal home clash against West Ham on Saturday

Thomas Frank: Under-pressure Tottenham boss faces pivotal home clash against West Ham on Saturday - Sky Sports
Description

Thomas Frank faces the most pivotal game of his Tottenham tenure on Saturday.

A home defeat against relegation-threatened London rivals West Ham, who are 18th and are on a 10-game Premier League winless run, would be simply unthinkable for Frank.

And with West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo also under huge pressure, it is a game which Sky Sports' Tim Sherwood has labelled as 'El Sackico'.

But Frank's press conference on Thursday did not give the impression that his job would be under threat if Spurs were to lose to the Hammers.

In fact, it felt like the Dane had been given some good news over the last few days.

And I get the impression that he has probably been told that he will have at least the coming matches to turn this around, and even possibly until the end of the season.

This felt like a press conference from August or September, when things were rosy for Frank. His answers on Thursday were long, he smiled throughout, and there was an air of defiance.

And why wouldn't there be after a positive week of change for Frank ahead of Saturday's crunch clash.

On Wednesday, he was handed a "top signing" in Conor Gallagher following his £34m arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Then a day later, two announcements came - Frank had hired John Heitinga as his new assistant first-team coach, while at boardroom level, Carlos Raphael 'Rafi' Moersen was appointed director of football operations in a newly created role.

My understanding is that Rafi is not Fabio Paratici's replacement after the co-sporting director's exit at the end of the January transfer window was confirmed on Wednesday.

Rafi will work closely with sporting director Johan Lange in what Tottenham believe is a modern, high-performance football structure, as we wait and see whether Paratici will be replaced.

Can Frank win fans over?

So it has been another week of change at Spurs - and Frank will be hoping for more change on Saturday: the mood of the fans.

Boos once again greeted the full-time whistle after last Saturday's FA Cup third-round home defeat to Aston Villa.

That loss was Tottenham's seventh in their last 13 games, while Frank's side are winless in 2026.

It is why most fans have just not taken to Frank, with some frustrated at his defensive style, while others are upset at things he says in press conferences. The Arsenal cup blunder at Bournemouth has not helped either.

But even before a ball is kicked on Saturday, there could be an air of frustration with protests planned - although it will be intriguing to see the attendance at these protests following the signing of Gallagher.

What is for certain is that if things go wrong against a relegation-threatened London rival, then a toxic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be hugely troublesome for Frank.

The Lewis family and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham will be there, and if they notice the crowd's unhappiness, then there could be a real issue.

Frank knows that only a win laced with attacking intent will appease his detractors.

Does Frank deserve to be under pressure?

After the Villa defeat, Frank looked like a man under pressure.

But I do have sympathy for the 52-year-old because this squad is not good enough.

If Tottenham were to sell all of their players right now, then arguably only Micky van de Ven and maybe Cristian Romero would go to a bigger club, like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

But then some fans believe that the squad is better than 14th in the Premier League.

The problem for Frank has been that key members of this squad - James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke - have all been missing, with only Solanke just returning from injury.

There has also been so much change going on around Frank at the club, including Daniel Levy's shock exit in September.

This week has been evidence of the new era at Tottenham, and perhaps Frank needs to be given a bit more leeway following the dramatic revolution.

What Frank can control, though, is the style of football, which has rightly contributed to the pressure on him.

A better free-flowing Spurs with the shackles off will help the ex-Brentford boss turn things around.

But ultimately, for Frank, he will just want the victory on Saturday in what many feel is a win-or-bust game.
