Son Heung-min: Tottenham captain set to join Los Angeles FC for £20m - BBC
Description

Son Heung-min is expected to join Los Angeles FC for around £20m after announcing his departure from Tottenham over the weekend.

The forward revealed in a news conference on Saturday that he will leave Tottenham this summer after 10 years at the club.

And the 33-year-old appears poised to join Major League Soccer (MLS) in what could even be a record fee, potentially surpassing the £22.5m paid by Atlanta United to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.

The final details of the transfer remain in discussion but his move to LAFC is now considered subject just to the completion of paperwork and a medical.

Son, who is under contract with Spurs until 2026, made what is expected to be his final appearance for Tottenham in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday.

He was embraced by his Spurs team-mates and the opposing Newcastle players, and they performed a guard of honour when he was substituted in the 65th minute. While Tottenham's pre-season preparations now take them to Germany to face Bayern Munich on Thursday - and a reunion with Harry Kane -Son is expected to enjoy some time in his native South Korea.

Arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son scored 173 goals in 454 appearances for Tottenham.

He was captain when Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in May to clinch their first trophy in 17 years.

Spurs and Newcastle draw in Son's final game

FT: Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle

Son Heung-min played his final game for Tottenham in a 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Newcastle in his homeland of South Korea on Sunday.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring early on for Spurs and paid tribute to his departing captain by performing Son's trademark celebration.

Harvey Barnes then equalised for the Magpies before the break.

Thomas Frank will be anxiously awaiting updates on the fitness of James Maddison who was stretchered off late on with a serious-looking injury.

'I need a little bit of change'

It is the end of an era as Tottenham captain Son Heung-min confirmed he is leaving the club after 10 years.

The 33-year-old's final game was a friendly against Newcastle in his homeland of South Korea on Sunday.

He finishes with 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances and says leaving was "the most difficult one I have made in my career".

"I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English," said Son. "Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.

"I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change - 10 years is a long time.

"I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again."

Post

Alexander Isak returned to Newcastle training today after missing the club's tour of Asia and spending the first weeks of pre-season training alone in Spain.

However, the speculation surrounding the Sweden striker does not look any less likely to die down in the days and weeks to come.

On this live text, we will now move on from this Isak saga to look at the farewell for a Tottenham legend.

Before that, here's a quick look at all the completed deals in the Premier League this window.

Will Newcastle get Sesko?

David Ornstein

The Athletic's football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle understand that a deal might have to be done for Alexander Isak, provided they get the right financial offer and I suspect they probably will - given Liverpool’s apparent commitment to this and Isak’s determination to go.

Their first choice target to replace Isak is Benjamin Sesko. The issue with that is competition from Manchester United primarily and the finances being extremely high in terms of the potential transfer fee.

Newcastle did not want to be In this position but Isak’s representative have made it clear for some time that they would be departing this Summer.

For all parties a solution must be found because the current situation cannot continue.

Gossip: Man Utd, Newcastle to battle for Sesko

It looks like a two-way battle between two Premier League clubs for the signature of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko will dominate the remainder of the summer transfer window.

According to Sky Sports Germany, external, Manchester United are ready to match Newcastle United's opening offer for the prolific 22-year-old Slovenia striker.

Sky Sports earlier reported that the Magpies made a formal offer worth £65.5m plus £4.3m in add-ons.

Meanwhile, the Mail, external says Newcastle are also eyeing a move for Paris St-Germain and Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos, 24, if a deal for Sesko falls through.

Ramos scored 10 goals in 22 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG last season while also finding the back of the net thrice in the Champions League and five times in the French Cup.

Do Liverpool need Isak?

Liverpool

Should Alex Isak leave Newcastle, a move to Premier League champions Liverpool seems the most likely.

The Reds are investing heavily as they look to push on next season, and see Isak as the man to lead their frontline.

But Liverpool fans appear torn - here's what Reds supporters told BBC Sport...

Callum: "Let's be honest, this is just us being greedy.

"He would be a great addition to the squad - any team would happily take him - but we just have so much threat in the attack that we simply don't need him to the point of spending more than £100m."

Michael: "It's getting silly this. If there are funds to spend get a centre-back - that's the cover we need. We do not need another forward. Just because there's money, it doesn't mean we must spend it."

Simon: "If Isak is available and Liverpool can afford him, then go for it.

"This will take Liverpool to the same level that Manchester City have been at for the past few seasons. When you are champions, you make your team better. All the great teams do the same."

Joao Palhinha: Tottenham sign Bayern Munich midfielder on loan - BBC
Description

Tottenham have signed Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan deal.

The 30-year-old, who joined the German side from Fulham in 2024, was limited to just 17 Bundesliga appearances last season.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank was keen to sign a defensive-minded midfielder following his appointment, with question marks over the futures of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Tottenham also have the option of signing Palhinha on a permanent basis at the end of his loan.

The Portugal international has significant Premier League experience, making 68 top-flight appearances in two years at Fulham before his move to Bayern for £42.3m.

Palhinha comfortably topped the rankings for tackles with a total of 300 during his previous stint in the English top-flight - 109 more than any other player - and ranked sixth for interceptions (92).

His combative style of play, however, does carry risks having received 27 yellow cards across 2022-23 and 2023-24 - at least five more than anyone else.

Palhinha becomes Spurs' third summer signing, following the £55m acquisition of Mohammed Kudus and French forward Mathys Tel's arrival from Bayern on a permanent basis after a loan spell.

Tottenham: Son Heung-min says farewell in Newcastle friendly in Seoul - BBC
Description

Son Heung-min made an emotional farewell as he played what is expected to be the final game of his Tottenham career in front of his adoring home supporters in Seoul.

The South Korea forward was embraced by his Spurs team-mates and the opposing Newcastle players, and they performed a guard of honour when he was substituted in the 65th minute.

Having handed the captain's armband to Ben Davies, 33-year-old Son was welcomed off the pitch by the backroom staff and substitutes before he took his place on the bench, resting his head in his hands as he fought back tears.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said: "The reaction was instinctive from my players.

"That speaks volumes about him. It's not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years.

"He's seen as one of the game's great Premier League players."

Son said on Saturday that he had made "the most difficult" decision of his career in choosing to leave Spurs after 10 years.

The pre-season friendly finished 1-1 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

"I didn't think I was going to cry at first," Son said.

"But after hearing a few words from my teammates, leaving the club I've spent so much time with felt really tough.

"I felt really, really happy playing this match. Thanks to my fans, my teammates and also my opponents, I've had an unforgettable day."

There was an injury concern for new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank after midfielder James Maddison was taken off on a stretcher only 10 minutes after coming on.

Frank said: "Sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal.

"That's what we got today. It looks like a bad injury (for Maddison) and then, on the other side, unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.

"First we had the walkaround and then the team-mates gathered around and he was emotional.

"In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny. Then he said a few things. It was beautiful."

Son became the most expensive Asian signing in Premier League history when he joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen for about £22m in 2015.

A club legend, he helped Spurs end their 17-year wait for a trophy in May, captaining them to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Son is in advanced negotiations with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC.

Frank, who had said during a press conference on Saturday that saying goodbye in South Korea would provide "a beautiful ending" for Son, said after the match that it was "very likely Sonny's last game because [a move is] very close".

Spurs play Bayern Munich in Germany on Thursday and contest the Uefa Super Cup against Paris St-Germain the following week.

The expectant crowd in Seoul cheered excitedly whenever Son touched the ball.

Brennan Johnson paid tribute to Son by copying his celebration - in which he mimics taking a photo - after he opened the scoring from the edge of the penalty area in the fourth minute.

Harvey Barnes equalised before half-time, beating keeper Antonin Kinsky at his near post.

Son's statistics speak for themselves: 173 goals - the fifth highest for Spurs - and 101 assists in 454 games, with his 127 Premier League goals the joint 16th highest in the competition's history.

He holds the Spurs record for Premier League assists with 71, and in 2021-22 became the first Asian player to win the competition's Golden Boot, which he shared with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah on 23 goals.

After Spurs' record goalscorer Harry Kane moved to Bayern Munich in 2023, Son scored 17 goals and recorded 10 assists in 35 league games the following season.

Last season was the first in which Son, the club's three-time player of the year, failed to reach double figures for league goals since his debut campaign as Spurs finished one place above the relegation zone.

But goals should not be the only metric by which Son's influence is measured.

His 0.38 assists per 90 minutes in the league last term was his best return yet, as was his 0.68 big chances created per 90 - the fifth-highest in the league last season of players to play over 1,000 minute.

Perhaps the most telling stats are those which point to his impact on the rest of the team.

Spurs won 42% of the 24 league games Son started in 2024-25, compared to 7% without him, failing to win 13 of the 14 matches without their captain.

Given Spurs averaged 2.1 goals and 1.4 points per game with Son starting and only 1.0 goals and 0.4 points per game in his absence, Frank will need players to step up, including £55m summer signing Mohamed Kudus, who replaced him on Sunday.

Tottenham: James Maddison suffers 'bad' injury in pre-season friendly against Newcastle - BBC
Description

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank says the injury suffered by midfielder James Maddison during Sunday's pre-season draw against Newcastle "looks bad".

The former Leicester City playmaker, 28, pulled up off the ball seven minutes from time during Spurs' 1-1 draw with the Magpies.

The England international looked in clear discomfort and had to be stretchered off from the field of play, while team-mate Son Heung-min, during his final appearance for the club, was visibly emotional watching on.

Frank says Maddison, who missed the Europa League final victory against Manchester United last season with a knee injury, has likely injured the same knee.

"Sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal," said Frank.

"That's what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.

"We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before."

Wales forward Brennan Johnson opened the scoring for Spurs within the first four minutes in Seoul, South Korea.

Former Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes equalised for Newcastle seven minutes before half-time.

'Like being with a rock star' - Son's 10 years at Spurs

'Like being with a rock star' - departing Son's 10 years at Spurs - BBC
Description

"I'm not sure we'll see another Sonny at Tottenham," Kevin Wimmer, Son Heung-min's close friend and former Spurs team-mate, tells BBC Sport.

"To be at one club - especially one as big as Spurs - for 10 years in this day and age is a very special achievement."

After 454 appearances and 173 goals, Son is moving to pastures new a decade after Mauricio Pochettino brought him to north London from Bayer Leverkusen.

The South Korea forward was the most expensive Asian signing in the Premier League when the then 23-year-old arrived in 2015 in a deal reportedly worth £22.5m.

Now aged 33, Son leaves three months after writing his name in Spurs folklore by helping the team to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final to end the club's 17-year wait for a major trophy.

"We love players who give so much to this club," Micky Hazard, an FA Cup (1982) and Uefa Cup (1984) winner with Spurs, says.

"Sonny will always be worshipped in these parts."

On the pitch, Son will be remembered by Spurs fans for his searing pace and outstanding moments like his wonderful solo goal in 2019, when Tottenham's number seven was too quick for Burnley as he ran all the way from the edge of his own penalty area, dodging tackle after tackle, before slotting past Nick Pope.

Off it, he will be remembered by team-mates for his incredible gestures.

Son paid the bill when he took the team out for a Korean barbecue during Tottenham's pre-season tour of South Korea in 2022 before giving the whole travelling party personal gifts to mark their visit to his home country.

"When he first arrived, I didn't know much about him," Hazard tells BBC Sport.

"Ten years on, he's leaving a Spurs legend."

Son had already rejected Pochettino before joining the Argentine at Tottenham and embarking on a 10-year love affair with Spurs.

In 2013, Pochettino had just taken charge of Southampton when he met with the then 20-year-old - who was already making a name for himself with Hamburg - his father, Son Woong-jung, and his agent.

Pochettino tried to convince Son that Saints, then in the Premier League, would be the ideal place to continue his football education, but the player moved to Bayer Leverkusen instead where he spent two years before finally linking up with Pochettino, who had been appointed Spurs boss 15 months earlier.

Yet he struggled to settle in his early days in London and asked to leave, external less than a year into a five-year contract before deciding to stay and fight for his place.

A decade after arriving, Son leaves with a Europa League winners' medal - as well as a sackful of individual prizes, including the 2021-22 Premier League Golden Boot, which he shared with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah after both players scored 23 times, and the Fifa Puskas award (presented to the scorer of the "most beautiful" goal of the calendar year) for that run and finish against Burnley in 2019.

"Everything about that goal is a symbol of how he plays the game," adds Hazard.

There have been crushing disappointments too, like defeat by Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final, and losing to Manchester City in the 2021 EFL Cup final.

In 2019, he apologised for his tackle on Andre Gomes which left the Everton midfielder with a horrific ankle injury and which resulted in the visibly upset Son being sent off.

Yet the individual awards have continued to flow.

Four Premier League player of the month prizes, two-time winner of goal of the month, three-time Tottenham player of the year... the list goes on.

A fierce competitor on the pitch, Spurs supporters have warmed to Son's 'Mr Nice Guy' image off it.

After Tottenham defeated West Ham in the EFL Cup in 2021, a young fan managed to get on the pitch and ran towards the player before being surrounded by stewards.

The boy was being escorted away when Son caught up with him, took off his shirt, and handed it to the youngster.

Son is big news in South Korea.

Actually, that's not quite true. Son is huge news.

"There has been research about who has the best brand value among all South Korean people, and Son is almost always in top three along with top K-pop stars like BTS and Blackpink," adds Sungmo Lee.

"One of the reasons for that is South Korean people regard him as the national treasure and pride of the country."

In South Korea, there are regular television programmes that are simply compilations of Son's best goals and assists, while a Son icon appears above the scoreboard to denote he is playing during live broadcasts of Tottenham matches in the country.

His face beams from giant billboards advertising anything from clothes to ice cream, and Son's picture has also appeared on the side of the capital's buses promoting tourism.

In Son's hometown of Chuncheon, about 50 miles from Seoul and where a football academy has been set up by the player and his family, there is a huge mural in his honour.

England right-back Kyle Walker, who played for Tottenham between 2009-2017, recalls a promotional visit to Seoul with Son soon after Spurs finished runners-up to Premier League champions Chelsea at the end of 2016-17.

Former Austria centre-back Wimmer and Wales defender Ben Davies joined the trip to meet sponsors and a thriving Spurs fanbase, which had grown significantly since Son signed.

"I've never seen anything like it," Walker, who spent eight years in north London before joining Manchester City in 2017, said on his 'You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker' podcast.

"We'd do an appearance and then we'd have to use decoy vehicles to get away because fans would try and stop the traffic. They all wanted to catch a glimpse of Sonny.

"They'd come back to the hotel where we were staying and all night they'd sit outside. It was incredible.

"I've seen it before to a certain degree with Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and David Beckham. But it was nothing compared to Sonny."

Wimmer, who has stayed in touch with Son since leaving Spurs in 2017, likened it to "being in the company of a rock star".

"I was always joking with him about this," he says.

"I said: 'You are the most famous guy in South Korea', but he was like: 'No, no, it's not so special'."

Former Austria defender Wimmer had arrived at White Hart Lane from Cologne in the summer of 2015, three months before Son.

"I knew of him because, like me, he was playing in the Bundesliga," adds Wimmer.

The pair struck up an instant friendship in London.

In their early days at Tottenham, they would often speak German together while they improved their English.

After a win at Southampton in 2016, Son and Wimmer interviewed one another - in English - for Spurs TV.

"Kev, why are you my best friend?" asks Son.

Wimmer replies: "Because you are a wonderful guy, an honest guy. It's always funny with you and I hope we stay together for many more years here."

Within a year, Wimmer had been sold to Stoke for £18m. Son stayed to become a Spurs great.

In the space of two years Spurs have lost Harry Kane - their all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances - and now Son.

Following Kane's departure to Bayern Munich in August 2023, Son stepped up by scoring 17 goals and adding 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances as Spurs finished fifth in 2023-24.

However, Son scored just seven goals and provided nine assists in his 30 Premier League appearances in 2024-25. He also endured an injury-hit end to the season and was restricted to a 67th-minute substitute appearance in the Europa League final.

Four days after beating Manchester United in a European final, great names from Tottenham's past formed a guard of honour for soon-to-depart manager Ange Postecoglou's side before the home game with Brighton on the final day of the season.

Ossie Ardiles, Pat Jennings, Keith Burkinshaw and Martin Chivers were among those who lined up on the pitch - along with Hazard.

"Sonny came up to each and every one of us, shook our hands, and said: 'Now I'm a legend'," adds former Spurs midfielder Hazard.

"Despite everything he achieved in 10 years at Spurs, he still didn't believe he was a legend until he won a trophy. I think there is something special about that, something beautiful. It says so much about his character."

Wimmer, who now plays for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, messaged his friend immediately after the final in Bilbao to congratulate him on helping Spurs win a first major European trophy since 1984.

"Out of hundreds of messages he received that night, Sonny still took time to get back to me," he says. "I was so pleased Sonny was finally able to get his hands on a trophy."

Spurs are supported by 12 million - almost one in four - South Koreans, according to research commissioned by AIA, the Asia-based insurance firm which is the club's shirt-front sponsor.

"Son is a pride of whole nation," says Sungmo Lee.

"He already proved himself to win the Golden Boot in the Premier League, which was regarded as impossible for an Asian player."

Son made front page news in 2020 when he travelled back to his home country for compulsory national service.

The player spent three weeks with the South Korean Military Corps, where he finished among the top five performers.

"It was big news and one of the reasons why Korean people love him even more," adds Sungmo Lee. "The training included firing guns. He got the award for being among the best trainees out of 157 he trained with."

Will Son's departure hit Tottenham's revenue streams?

On matchdays at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, up to 700 Son shirts are sold - the most of any player - because of the increasing number of fans travelling from South Korea to watch their hero in action.

"They tend to be wealthy fans with disposable income," football finance expert Kieran Maguire tells BBC Sport. "They don't just buy one Son shirt, they're coming away with two carrier bags full of stuff with Son's name on the back."

Maguire believes there could be a "small" impact on Tottenham's finances now Son has announced he is leaving.

"While it will be a blow for Spurs fans in terms of memories because Son has been a magnificent player for them, the difference between finishing 16th and 17th in the table (Spurs finished 17th last season) is £3.5m.

"Over the course of the season, that's more important than shirt sales from one player."

So what does the future look like for Son, who is in advanced negotiations with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

"On several occasions, including his interview with the Korean media in 2024, he has said he won't be a football manager and won't be staying in football after his retirement," adds Sungmo Lee.

"He also said, for that reason, he wishes to continue his football career for as long as possible."

Whatever he decides to do when he stops playing, Son's memory will live on at Tottenham and beyond.

"No-one will ever forget Sonny," adds Wimmer.

Son Heung-min: Tottenham captain to leave this summer after 10 years at club - BBC
Description

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min says he will leave the club this summer after 10 years.

The South Korea international joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances.

He was captain when Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in May to clinch their first trophy in 17 years.

The 33-year-old, who is under contract with Spurs until 2026, is in advanced negotiations with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

Son described the decision as "the most difficult one I have made in my career" as he spoke to media alongside new manager Thomas Frank.

"I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English," Son said.

"Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment."

Tottenham are in Seoul as part of their pre-season preparations, with Son set to start and skipper the side against Newcastle in their friendly on Sunday - meaning his final appearance for the club could come in his home country.

Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou as head coach in June, described Son as "a true Spurs legend" and "one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League".

"If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans," Frank said.

"It could be a beautiful ending."

Tottenham also face Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on 13 August, but Son may depart by then.

Description

Tottenham are closing in on a loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Talks between the clubs are at an advanced stage, with an agreement in principle in place.

An agreement over personal terms is unlikely to pose a problem and the deal is set to carry an option for the 30-year-old to make the transfer permanent.

Palhinha has significant Premier League experience, making 68 top-flight appearances in two years at Fulham before his move to Germany for £42.3m in July 2024.

However, the Portugal international has made just six Bundesliga starts since his move to Bavaria and is keen for a return to England.

Spurs have already made Mathys Tel's loan move from Bayern permanent since the arrival of head coach Thomas Frank, while Mohammed Kudus has been signed from West Ham in a deal worth £55m.

Arsenal-Spurs: What we learned from north London derby in Hong Kong

What we learned as Spurs beat Arsenal in Hong Kong - BBC
Description

Tottenham Hotspur beat Arsenal in the first north London derby outside of the UK thanks to Pape Matar Sarr's excellent long-range chip.

The match, which was played in front of a stadium-record crowd of 49,975, gave a glimpse into what both sets of supporters can expect from their sides this season.

Sarr lobbed the ball over David Raya from near the halfway line in the 45th minute after Spurs won the ball back in midfield.

BBC Sport looks at what we learned from a rare pre-season meeting of these rivals.

Arsenal are known for their threat from set-pieces, scoring from 15 last season, with coach Nicolas Jover one of the most recognisable members of backroom staff in the Premier League.

After Arsenal won their first corner of the match, five players lined up along the 18-yard line - a sign they have been working on some new routines after their goals from corners dropped off towards the end of last season.

However, the Gunners also conceded from 14 set-pieces last season and Tottenham had opportunities to score from their own corners.

Pedro Porro and Mohammed Kudus both hit the post directly from corners, with one of the deliveries somehow staying out of the net after Richarlison attempted to put the rebound in from close range but instead helped it over the bar.

Spurs looked organised defensively when defending set-pieces, and throughout open play, with manager Thomas Frank looking to get his ideas over to his new team before the start of the Premier League season.

There has been a real difference in Arsenal's style and how they have approached games on their pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Gunners scored 17 fewer goals than Liverpool last season and finished 10 points behind the champions in second place.

They struggled to break down teams that defended in low blocks, but against Spurs - and throughout pre-season - Mikel Arteta's side have got the ball forward a lot quicker than they did last season.

Goalkeeper David Raya is kicking the ball long as much as he is playing it short.

Arsenal also seem to be shooting more - they registered 23 shots against AC Milan, 15 against Newcastle and, despite losing, had 16 shots against Tottenham.

Arteta is clearly hoping that getting the ball forward quickly and increasing the number of shots on goal will translate to the extra points they missed last season.

"I am very pleased with what I've seen in most of the things that we've done," said Arteta. "But we miss something in certain moments.

"That preciseness, that moment that unlocks the result, the moment to turn the result our way."

A key part of how this Arsenal team plays is built around the partnership of right-back Ben White, captain and right-sided number eight Martin Odegaard and right winger Bukayo Saka.

All three had lengthy injuries last season and without them in the side regularly, the Arsenal attack struggled to flow.

In the open training session held at the Kai Tak Stadium, the three were practising interchanging passes and runs, ending the drills with a cross into the penalty area which was aimed at new striker Viktor Gyokeres.

White continuously ran on the outside of Saka to either give him the option to pass for the overlapping full-back to run on to and cross, or dribble into the box himself.

Gyokeres was introduced in the 77th minute as supporters got to see the club's new signing in an Arsenal shirt for the first time.

The 27-year-old is a different profile to the other Arsenal forwards - he is an imposing figure and it is hoped inside the club that his goals will fire Arsenal to a trophy.

Gyokeres plays a lot differently to Kai Havertz, for example - he does not look to get involved with the build-up play as much, instead looking to get into the penalty area or on the end of crosses.

Gyokeres had a couple of half chances, one being a header from a corner which came at him from a difficult angle, but he did not get a chance to show why Arsenal decided to spend up to £64m on him.

"I'm really happy to have them here," Arteta said when asked about Gyokeres and defender Cristhian Mosquera, who also made his first appearance.

"I think they are going to add a lot of value. You see straight away the energy and the quality they are going to bring.

"It was a short time but at least that one is over now and when they play against Villarreal (on 6 August), I'm sure it will be different."

Tottenham were under pressure for large parts of the match but when they did attack, their wingers offered a good attacking outlet.

Wilson Odobert and Kudus were always looking to take on their full-back and Kudus hit the post directly from a corner in the first half.

After the match, Frank was asked about the £55m summer signing from West Ham.

"His hold-up play, the way he takes hold of the ball in tricky situations, his one-vs-one skills and his creating opportunities for the team were top class," Frank said.

"On top of that I think he's working extremely hard. There was a recovery run from a set-piece when he was straining all the way back and he won the ball back.

"That's how he can help the team so much. He will make a lot of the fans excited with his offensive actions and he will also help the team defensively."

The decisive moment of the match was Sarr's strike, which went sailing over the head of goalkeeper Raya.

The Arsenal keeper is tasked with getting involved in the build-up of play by Arteta because of his passing ability.

That means that his starting position is often high and leaves him vulnerable if Arsenal lose the ball in midfield.

Raya conceded a similar goal to Crystal Palace last season, when Jean-Philippe Mateta chipped him when he was off of his line in the Premier League last season.
