Xavi Simons transfer news: Tottenham on verge of £51.8m deal for RB Leipzig attacker - BBC
Description

Tottenham are on the verge of signing RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons for 60m euros (£51.8m).

The Netherlands international is in England, with sources indicating he has completed his medical before signing for Thomas Frank's side.

The clubs have an agreement in principle over the overall package that will allow the 22-year-old to move to north London, with the finer details of the deal to be concluded within the next 24 hours.

Chelsea held talks with Leipzig over a move for Simons earlier this summer but are set to complete a £40m move for Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho.

Simons is now set to join Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus as summer arrivals at Spurs.

Spurs failed in their bid to sign Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White earlier this summer, while one of their main targets Eberechi Eze chose to join rivals Arsenal from Crystal Palace.

A product of Barcelona's La Masia academy, Simons moved to Paris St-Germain in 2019 as a teenager before impressing during a loan spell at PSV in 2022-23.

He would spend the next two seasons at Leipzig, scoring 22 goals and providing 24 assists in 78 games across all competitions for the German side.

He would be the second major transfer from Leipzig to the Premier League this summer, following Benjamin Sesko's move to Manchester United in a deal worth £73.7m.

Named Xavi, after the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder, Simons has long been one of the most sought-after players in Europe.

Simons quickly became a gem in the Catalan giants' esteemed academy after joining aged seven, and was recognised far beyond it.

Yet at 16, Simons' career trajectory took a huge detour. Having failed to reach an agreement with Barcelona he joined PSG, following in the footsteps of his idol Neymar - saying the Brazilian looked after him like a "little brother".

At 17, in February 2021, he made his debut but further opportunities were limited and, by the end of the following season, Simons had accumulated just 11 senior appearances in all competitions.

He went in search of regular football.

A versatile prospect who operates on either wing or behind the striker and speaks six languages, he has already been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, but appears to have now got his move to the Premier League.

He has made 28 appearances for the Netherlands, having become the country's youngest player to feature in the knockout stages of the World Cup when he made his debut against the USA in Qatar in 2022.

Description

Turkish club Galatasaray are in talks with Tottenham over a loan deal for defensive midfielder Yves Bissouma, who is yet to feature for Spurs this season.

The Mali international was left out of the squad to face Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup this month because of persistent lateness.

Bissouma missed Spurs' Premier League opening win against Burnley with injury and was also not available for Saturday's 2-0 win at Manchester City.

The 28-year-old joined Spurs from Brighton in a deal worth £25m plus add-ons in 2022 and has made 100 appearances for the club, including starting the 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United in May.

'The signs are so positive' - Warnock

Man City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock was also full of praise for Tottenham's performance.

"Yes it's very early doors, but the signs are so positive," said Warnock.

"It's night and day compared to where Spurs were."

But he added he can't understand why some players aren't choosing to sign for the club.

'I am falling in love with this club'

Man City 0-2 Tottenham

As you'd expect, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank was delighted with his side's 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

He emphasised the importance of keeping a second successive clean sheet, given Spurs kept just six in the Premier League last season.

After two games, are already a third of the way to matching that total...

Statement win for Frank

Man City 0-2 Tottenham

It's a north London one-two at the top of the table after Tottenham celebrated victory over Manchester City in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off.

What a result it was for new boss Thomas Frank and his team.

It was a third victory in Spurs' last five visits to the Etihad - it certainly isn't a fixture Pep Guardiola enjoys - and back-to-back opening wins for former Brentford coach Frank.

Have you been impressed by how Tottenham are looking so far?

Dowman shines on debut

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds United

There's certainly been no shortage of talk around big-money summer signings over recent weeks.

But 15-year-old Max Dowman certainly took his opportunity to shine at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta said that he needs to "protect" Dowman in his development but that has not stopped his team-mates heaping praise on him.

"I think everyone can see the potential he has. Playing against grown men. He is a joy to watch, for the crowd too he is a joy to watch. Hopefully, he will have many amazing years here." Jurrien Timber said.

Gyokeres feeling 'more comfortable'

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds

Viktor Gyokeres did his trademark 'mask' celebration after scoring his first Premier League goal for Arsenal on Saturday, but then he switched things up for his second goal against Leeds by running his fingers through his hair, a nod to the critics who said who touched his gelled hair more than the ball at Old Trafford a week earlier.

The Sweden striker joined Arsenal on a £64m five-year deal from Sporting in July and, after a short pre-season, says he's fitting in well at the Emirates.

"I felt more comfortable in how we're playing, and I think you can see that as well," Gyokeres told Sky Sports.

"I am comfortable when the ball is coming in-behind and then cutting inside. I know I'll take the chance when I have it like that.

"We have so many amazing players going forward. For me, it is important to be in the right place."

'Eze going in at the deep end'

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds

Nigel Reo-Coker

Former Aston Villa midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bukayo Saka is 'Mr Arsenal', he is the influential player.

Thankfully they have just signed Eberechi Eze, who is a special player, and he is going to have to go straight in at the deep end and take the burden of being the man that creates for Arsenal.

He hasn't gone to Arsenal to be the main man, he has gone to show the talent that he has, and he is definitely capable of doing it.

Saka out but Eze in & Gyokeres scoring

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds

Although undoubtedly a blow that his star player will miss one of the biggest games of the season against Liverpool this weekend, the news that Bukayo Saka's hamstring injury is not quite as serious as first feared will be of huge relief for Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal boss was able to welcome a new forward last week with the arrival of £60m signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

And he also watched new £64m striker Viktor Gyokeres score his first Arsenal goals in the 5-0 win over Leeds United.

The Emirates atmosphere was lifted further by the Premier League debut of 15-year-old Max Dowman too, as the hosts outclassed their promoted opposition on a near-perfect day.

Arsenal off to fine start

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds

It's not about who's top after two rounds.

That's what I'm [Harry] telling my fantasy football squad anyway...

But it's been a solid start to the campaign for Arsenal as they look to go one better than their second-place finishes in each of the past three seasons.

The Gunners followed up their opening win at Manchester United by hammering Leeds United on Saturday evening to sit top of the (very early) table.

Mainoo's blocked pathway

Fulham 1-1 Man Utd

Simon Stone

BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

Kobbie Mainoo was an unused substitute yesterday as Manchester United drew with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

When Ruben Amorim made changes during the game, the first was to drop Mason Mount into a deeper role for Casemiro as Benjamin Sesko came on. Then Manuel Ugarte replaced Mount as United looked for a winner.

Mainoo seems to have slipped back quite a way since the his 2023-24 breakthrough campaign under Erik ten Hag, when he scored in the FA Cup final and started for England in the Euro 2024 final.

Judging by who the 20-year-old is in direct competition with in the United squad, according to Ruben Amorim, the midfielder might be in for a frustrating few weeks.

“He’s fighting for the position now with Bruno (Fernandes),” he said.

“I changed two midfielders. I left Mason Mount there because we want to score a goal and when I changed again, I felt the team need to return to one holding midfielder near Bruno.

“He just needs to fight for the position with Bruno, as should be at Manchester United.

“He will play with Bruno (as well) but at the moment he’s fighting in training with Bruno for the position.”

Unless Fernandes is moved into one of the number 10 roles new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo presently occupy, it is difficult to see Amorim dropping his captain.

Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium: How do Premier League sides usually fare at new grounds? - BBC
Description

Everton will start competitive life at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday with the Premier League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.

They will hope to build on the form of the second half of their last season at Goodison Park under David Moyes - and bounce back from last Monday's 1-0 defeat at Leeds.

How do Premier League sides usually fare when they move to a new ground?

There have been eight to date - only counting teams who were in the top flight for their first season at the new stadium, and excluding temporary homes.

BBC Sport has a look at how those teams did.

Tottenham moved to their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019 - on the site of their old White Hart Lane ground - after almost two seasons at Wembley.

Their first game at the new ground was on 3 April 2019, a 2-0 league win over Crystal Palace. They followed that up with a Champions League victory over Manchester City and league wins over Huddersfield and Brighton.

But then they lost to West Ham in the league and Ajax in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

Their first full season at the new ground resulted in the sacking of boss Mauricio Pochettino and a disappointing sixth-place finish in the league.

That was their joint-worst place in the league since 2008–09.

In their final season at White Hart Lane (2016-17), they did not lose a single game there.

They were unbeaten in home games in the league, finishing second, and domestic cups. Their Champions League matches were played at Wembley.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: Sixth

Home league games win rate: 63%

West Ham left the Boleyn Ground (better known as Upton Park) and moved to London Stadium - which had been the 2012 Olympic Stadium - at the start of 2016-17.

They recorded a 3-0 win over Slovenian side NK Domzale in a Europa League qualifier to start life at their new ground.

Their first Premier League home game there was a 1-0 win over Bournemouth - but days later, they lost at home to Romanian side Astra Giurgiu to exit Europa at the play-off stage.

They would have to wait until 22 October for their next home victory.

West Ham finished 11th that season, four positions lower than the previous season at Upton Park.

The Hammers had beaten Manchester United 3-2 in their final game at their home of 112 years.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: 11th

Home league games win rate: 37%

Arsenal moved to Emirates Stadium for the opening day of the 2006-07 season, drawing 1-1 against Aston Villa.

Their first win there came four days later as they beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 to seal their place in the Champions League group stages.

The Gunners only lost once at their new ground all season, 1-0 against West Ham on 7 April 2007.

Coincidentally, the Hammers were the last away team to win at Highbury too, with a 3-2 win on 1 February 2006.

They finished fourth in the Premier League in both seasons - although had a run to the Champions League final in their last season at the old ground.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: Fourth

Home league games win rate: 63%

At the start of 2003-04, Manchester City moved to the City of Manchester Stadium - also known as Eastlands - which had hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

It later changed branding to its current name, Etihad Stadium.

Their first competitive game at the new ground was against Welsh side TNS in a Uefa Cup qualifier, with City winning 5-0.

City drew 1-1 against Portsmouth in their first home game in the league in a disappointing campaign.

Kevin Keegan's side finished 16th, having finished ninth in their last campaign at Maine Road. Their last game at the old ground was a 1-0 loss to Southampton on the final day.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: 16th

Home league games win rate: 26%

Southampton's move to St Mary's in 2001-02 started dreadfully.

They lost 2-0 to Chelsea on 25 August and recorded four defeats and one draw in their first five games there.

Their first win at the stadium did not come until 24 November, by which stage manager Stuart Gray had been sacked.

They eventually finished comfortably in 11th under Gordon Strachan - just one place lower than they had in their final season at The Dell, which had been their home of 103 years.

Their last game at The Dell had been a memorable 3-2 win over Arsenal, with a late winner by Matt le Tissier.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: 11th

Home league games win rate: 37%

Bolton Wanderers, in 1997-98, are the only side to be relegated from the Premier League in their first season at a new ground - the Reebok Stadium (now Toughsheet Community Stadium).

But they were newly promoted.

The first game there had been a 0-0 draw with Everton on 1 September. Their first home victory was against Wimbledon in the League Cup on 14 October - and 12 days later they beat Chelsea there 1-0 in a league game.

Their last season at Burnden Park was a memorable one, as they won the First Division to seal promotion to the top flight.

Their last match at the old ground was a 4-1 win over Charlton on 25 April 1997. A 3-2 FA Cup loss to Chesterfield on 4 February was their last defeat there.

Record in first season at new ground

League position: 18th (relegated)

Home league games win rate: 37%

Middlesbrough moved to the Riverside Stadium at the start of 1995-96 on their return to the top flight after a two-year absence.

And with Juninho in the team, they enjoyed a fine start to the season.

They beat Chelsea 2-0 on 26 August in the first game at their new ground and did not lose a league game there until 21 November against Tottenham.

However they tailed off badly, only winning two league matches home or away after Christmas Day, and finished 12th.

Like Bolton two years later, Boro had won the First Division title in their last season at their old ground - which was Ayresome Park.

They signed off at Ayresome Park with a 2-1 win over Luton on 30 April 1995, and last lost there 4-2 against Derby on 18 March.

League position: 12th

Tottenham beat Man City: Why manager Thomas Frank could be Spurs' best signing of summer

Tottenham beat Man City: Why manager Thomas Frank could be Spurs' best signing of summer - BBC
Description

Thomas Frank said he was "falling in love" with Tottenham after the side's 2-0 win at Manchester City - and the feeling is mutual with supporters.

The Dane could not have made a much better start to life in the Premier League with his new side.

Saturday's result means it is consecutive wins and successive clean sheets, with some eye-catching attacking football along the way.

Frank, named as Ange Postecoglou's replacement after the Australian coach guided Spurs to the Europa League trophy last May, has already begun to win over hearts and minds in north London.

His impressive start has come against the backdrop of widespread supporter discontent at the club's perceived failings in this summer's transfer window and disillusionment with chairman Daniel Levy.

But bringing in Frank from Brentford may be the club's best signing of all.

The mood at Spurs has been peculiar this summer.

After the high of winning the Europa League at the end of last season, supporters were desperate for the side to kick on after a 17th place finish in the Premier League.

But Mohammed Kudus, a £50m signing from West Ham, and Joao Palhinha, a season-long loan signing from Bayern Munich, have been the only additions to the first-team squad since Postecoglou's departure.

On the club's pre-season tour, captain Son Heung-min said farewell to the club, while James Maddison suffered a knee injury that has ruled him out of the majority of the season.

Supporters have then had to deal with the ignominy of the collapse of two deals for high-profile transfer targets.

The club activated a £60m release clause in Morgan Gibbs-White's contract at Nottingham Forest, only for the England midfielder to sign a new deal with the club less than a week later.

Spurs then thought they had tied up a deal for England winger Eberechi Eze, only for the Crystal Palace playmaker to choose rivals Arsenal at the 11th hour.

"What is 100% sure is that we brought two top players into the club - Kudus and Palhinha - and both of them have performed very well," said Frank.

"And Palhinha, wow. You know, sometimes players need confidence, and they need to be on top."

Club chairman Levy has been criticised following the collapse of the Eze deal and for the club's transfer failings this summer.

There seemed to be added venom to the chants of "Levy out" from the 3,000-strong away following at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

But it was Levy's decision to part with Postecoglou and to hire Frank.

Despite finishing 17th last season, Spurs scored 64 times in the Premier League - only five fewer than second-placed Arsenal managed.

There was no doubting that the side played some swashbuckling football under Postecoglou, but they conceded 65 times last term, to finish with a negative goal difference of one.

Though Frank has only taken charge for two Premier League matches, Spurs have been solid in both with the side keeping clean sheets in both.

Asked about the difference between the two managers, 2023 signing Brennan Johnson said: "They are two different coaches. I'm really enjoying it. A lot of detail goes into the set-pieces, but at the same time he (Frank) gives us a lot of attacking freedom.

"We have kept two clean sheets and against Manchester City it is not easy. I have played here a lot of times and conceded a lot of goals."

After a successful two years with Fulham, Palhinha joined Bayern Munich for around £44m in 2024.

But within 12 months the 30-year-old found himself back in England after failing to win over manager Vincent Kompany at the Allianz Arena.

While there's no doubting his off-the-ball work, Palhinha's struggles at Bayern raised questions over his suitability to playing possession football

But the midfielder has impressed at Spurs and was named player of the match at Etihad Stadium after winning more duels (eight) and making more tackles (four) than any other player on the pitch.

"The coach (Frank) pushed me to come here and showed me the project," Palhinha told TNT Sports.

"It is such a great club, and I am really glad to be in the Premier League again.

"I am so happy, me and my family. Now I want to enjoy this top club and top atmosphere again."

Man City 0-2 Tottenham: James Trafford and Ederson decision to make for Guardiola

'Is Trafford really top drawer?' - Guardiola's keeper conundrum - BBC
Description

"It's happened again, it's happened again, Manchester City, it's happened again."

That was the chant bellowed from the Etihad Stadium's away end at full-time after City were again humbled at home by Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs were scintillating on their visit here last November and inflicted a 4-0 thrashing, but they were given a helping hand on this occasion and it was one they gleefully accepted.

This time it was 2-0. The visiting Spurs contingent, who have suffered as targets of the "it's happened again" jibe in the past, made sure to enjoy the moment.

Deploying a high defensive line cost Pep Guardiola's City side the opening goal, while goalkeeper James Trafford did not cover himself in glory for the second in an overall jittery performance on his home debut.

Ederson has been City's undisputed number one for eight years, but the Brazilian watched on from the bench after missing the Wolves game through illness last weekend amid heavy links with a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

What is clear is that Guardiola has a big long-term decision to make about the goalkeeper role.

"James made a good first game and I decided to continue [with him]," said Guardiola, explaining Trafford's selection.

"The keeper is a special position, of course, to have more consistency in the goal.

"When I take decisions in the first part of the season for all the players who play one or two games, everyone thinks 'OK this is the starting line-up, these are the players who are going to play', but with these amount of games, everyone will play.

"It was just today I decided that."

Trafford was in celebratory mood earlier in the week when he collected the PFA's Championship player of the year award at the Opera House in Manchester city centre, reward for his performances in the second tier for Burnley.

The 22-year-old kept 29 clean sheets in the league last season for the Clarets, and after joining City he was quickly on song, as Guardiola pointed out, in the opening win at Wolves.

But this was a different story, a difficult first showing in a City shirt at Etihad Stadium.

Trafford came through the City ranks and rejoined the club for £27m from Burnley this summer having not made a senior appearance in his first spell.

He will have been dreaming of playing Premier League football for City at the Etihad, but it turned into an uncomfortable afternoon, Trafford slipping away from centre stage at the final whistle with songs from joyful Spurs fans ringing in his ears.

Guardiola has turned to youth in his rebuild.

Saturday's team, with an average age of 24 years and 326 days, was the youngest starting XI named by the Spaniard in the Premier League and they have plenty to learn.

Tottenham's Richarlison pressed relentlessly all game and forced Trafford into conceding a corner, while the keeper was lucky not to be dismissed for a collision on the edge of the box with Spurs winger Mohammed Kudus.

And at 1-0 behind, with the crowd beginning to get anxious, those shaky moments then turned into a calamity as Trafford played a loose pass inside the area to Ruben Dias, who failed to control, and Joao Palhinha eventually smashed in.

City failed to recover, slipping to defeat in their first home game of the campaign.

"City were well beaten today," former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "I've got to say I'm not sure about the goalkeeper situation.

"Is James Trafford really top drawer? If it's a choice between Trafford and Ederson, I'm going with Ederson.

"It was poor for the goal, a weak pass into Dias, not even passing on to the right side, and that absolutely killed them with Spurs going in 2-0 at half-time."

Paris St-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma is rumoured to be of interest to City and sources have not totally ruled out a move for the Italian, but it would need Ederson to move on.

Guardiola, though, now has a decision to make as to whether he sticks with Trafford, brings Ederson back into the fold, or sells the Brazilian and signs Donnarumma.

The manager seems unsure himself, having said before the start of the season that Ederson was his number one, but then on Friday saying he will pick "who trains good".

Trafford was given the nod, but the decision raises more questions than answers.

Similar to counterpart Ruben Amorim across the city, the managers of both Manchester clubs each have a goalkeeping conundrum to deal with if they are to claw their way back to the top.

"There was a lot of talk after week one that this Man City team were back," former Everton midfielder Leon Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "I think this lets everybody take a step back and reassess that.

"They were way off the level that Spurs were at today."

James Trafford: Why did Man City goalkeeper avoid red card for challenge on Mohammed Kudus?

James Trafford: Why did Man City goalkeeper avoid red card for challenge on Mohammed Kudus? - BBC
Description

Goalkeeper James Trafford had a first half to forget on his Manchester City home debut against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.

Thomas Frank's side took a two-goal lead into half-time after goals from winger Brennan Johnson and midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Trafford, 22, was culpable for Spurs' second after he gave the ball away in his own box, with Pape Matar Sarr pinching possession from the pass out before Palhinha fired home.

But many felt the England U21 goalkeeper was lucky to still be on the pitch at that point.

Moments after Spurs took a 1-0 lead, Trafford sprinted out of his box as winger Mohammed Kudus raced in on goal.

After Kudus controlled with his chest, Trafford appeared to handle the ball outside his 18-yard box and caught the Ghana international high on the chest with his knee.

Kudus laid injured on the pitch as City regained possession but a free-kick was not awarded to Spurs and Trafford went unpunished.

While the challenge on Kudus was debateable, it was the use of Trafford's arm outside the box that had many people questioning whether the goalkeeper should have been sent off.

Firstly, after the referee saw no offence on the field, the incident was not reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee.

While all incidents are looked at in the VAR room, only those deemed worthy of an intervention are reviewed by the on-field referee.

BBC Sport understands that the officials felt there was not a case for the VAR to intervene as Trafford's hands were down by his side and because of the proximity of his body to the incident.

Secondly, a goalkeeper handling the ball outside the box is not an automatic red card.

There are a number of considerations that the referee (or the VAR) must take, such as whether the goalkeeper had denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the distance between the offence and the goal, the direction of play, and the location and number of defenders around the incident.

Man City 0-2 Spurs: Johnson and Palhinha score

Man City 0-2 Spurs: Johnson and Palhinha score - BBC
Description

Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back Premier League victories under new manager Thomas Frank by stunning Manchester City once again at Etihad Stadium.

Spurs came here last November and inflicted a 4-0 humbling of City in a scintillating performance, and they went home once more with all three points courtesy of a resolute defensive display.

They started slowly as Omar Marmoush latched on to Pedro Porro's loose header and squeezed a shot narrowly wide of the far post before seeing a thunderous strike from range pushed away by Guglielmo Vicario.

The Egyptian was lively early on and forced another excellent save from the Spurs goalkeeper after being played through by Erling Haaland.

With their first real threat of the game, Spurs took the lead courtesy of a lightning breakaway as Richarlison's low cross was converted by Brennan Johnson.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but that was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee.

With seven minutes added on in the first half because of an injury to City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Spurs doubled their lead through Joao Palhinha who smashed in after a loose pass from goalkeeper James Trafford inside his own area.

It capped a difficult few minutes for the City keeper who could have been dismissed for a collision on the edge of the box with Mohammed Kudus.

Haaland should have pulled one back before the break but headed over from close range, and the home side were left frustrated in the second period as Tottenham made it two clean sheets from two in the league so far this season.

Tottenham had experienced a bruising week because of a failed pursuit of winger Eberechi Eze, with the Crystal Palace player agreeing terms with Spurs' bitter rivals Arsenal instead.

The travelling supporters made their feelings known towards chairman Daniel Levy from the first whistle with loud chants of "we want Levy out" echoing around the stadium, though they were replaced by "we love you Tottenham" by full-time.

The players who do wear the Spurs shirt responded with another tremendous showing at City's ground, collecting their third victory in their last five visits.

Frank's side beat Burnley convincingly in their opening game and rode their luck as City missed opportunities, but they took full advantage when chances fell their way at the other end.

City were holding a high line and were made to pay as John Stones narrowly kept Richarlison onside, allowing the Brazilian to roll the ball across from the right, and Johnson made no mistake with his finish.

Spurs were pressing with precision and forced Trafford into an error, with the Englishman's risky ball eventually dropping into the path of Palhinha to net his first goal since joining on loan from Bayern Munich.

They could have made it a more handsome scoreline in the second half but Dominic Solanke saw his low drive pushed out by Trafford late on and Wilson Odobert was also denied from the rebound.

City started the season with an eye-catching victory at Wolves but came back down to earth with a bump as they suffered defeat in their first home game of the campaign.

Spurs are Guardiola's bogey side – the Spaniard has now lost a joint-high 10 games against them, the same number of defeats he has suffered as boss against Real Madrid and Liverpool.

They were made to pay for the gilt-edged chances missed by Marmoush and Haaland - the latter coming into the contest with an imperious record of scoring 48 Premier League goals in as many home games for the club.

A 2-0 half-time deficit proved too much for City to turn around, with Spurs defending resolutely and leaving Guardiola considering his options.

The goalkeeping situation will be at the forefront of his mind as Trafford had a jittery game and was at fault for the second, as well as being fortunate not to be dismissed.
