Tottenham 0-1 Arsenal: Gunners won 'like a Mourinho team'

It was not pretty, but Arsenal got the job done against Tottenham to ensure they did not lose any more early ground in the Premier League title race.

Gabriel scored their winner, from yet another set-piece, but it was the Gunners' defensive determination and organisation that really impressed their former forward Theo Walcott, who was watching the game for Match of the Day 2.

Arsenal had an average of only 36.3% of possession over the 90 minutes, but that fell from 38.1% before they scored in the 64th minute, to only 32.2% after they went 1-0 up.

"It really doesn't matter how they got it - it was great result for Arsenal," Walcott said.

"They showed again that they can mix it up, because they played almost like a Jose Mourinho side to see the game out."

Arsenal's victory was even more impressive considering they were without key midfelders Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, who were absent through injury and suspension.

Jorginho, making his first appearance of the season, replaced Rice and partnered Thomas Partey at the base of their midfield.

Leandro Trossard, starting instead of Odegaard, operated further forward but also had plenty of defensive responsibilities in a formation that started as a 4-3-3 but was more often a 4-4-2 when Spurs were on the ball.

While Mikel Arteta’s side were not at their best as an attacking force, they were able to shut out Spurs in the second half - particularly after Gabriel had headed home Bukayo Saka’s corner.

"As a team performance, probably the best comparison I can think of would be when Arsenal drew 0-0 at Manchester City last season," Walcott said.

"People wanted Arsenal to be more adventurous then, but they played with a system to get that result.

"It was exactly the same here, even though they had some important personnel out, they are so well drilled and structured that they showed it doesn't really matter who plays, because they are all drilled the same way defensively.

"That comes down to the work they do on the training ground. I was lucky enough to watch them in pre-season and the amount of coaching staff who are involved in each session is incredible.

"It makes the players' lives so much easier when there is that level of detail, with coaches that are literally there for each individual player.

"As a squad, they are getting the same message drilled into them on a daily basis, so I am not surprised anymore when they can grind out a result like this one."

Tottenham fired a stream of balls into the Arsenal box in the closing stages, but notably failed to create a clear-cut chance.

"This win was down to a team performance, with each Arsenal player taking responsibility of where they needed to be,” Walcott added.

"I felt like Spurs went away from their usual game, which surprised me - the way Ange Postecoglou usually plays football is incredible, but I didn’t really see that from them.

"Maybe he thought he would try something different too, but it did not quite work. They put in a lot of crosses but because this Arsenal team are so well drilled, it just fed into what they are good at.

"It must have felt like they were trying to play their way through a brick wall in the second half because, whatever they tried, Gabriel and William Saliba were ready to clear it away.

"It was like watching Mourinho's Chelsea side, and I used to hate playing against them.

"They were so well structured, with the likes of John Terry, Alex or Branislav Ivanovic, who were all incredible units in that back-line, and would organise everything.

"It would not look pretty, but they would just get results and would then end up winning the league.

"As a forward playing against them, it felt like there was only so much you could do. I would do my job by putting the ball into space but when everything you try has been denied, denied and denied again then, as a team, you start thinking 'we are never going to score today'."

While Arsenal were still solid without Rice at the heart of their midfield, they did miss Odegaard's creative nous and calmness on the ball.

"It's hard to compare him and Trossard, because they are very different players,” Walcott explained.

"Trossard, for me, is probably the best finisher at the club - but Odegaard is the conductor, the one who gets everything working and gets everyone in the team working at their best level. He even starts the defensive press.

"Ethan Nwaneri, who came on late in the second half, has some similarities as a player but at 17 he is still very young and still developing and learning.

"In time he could be the one who takes Odegaard's role when he is not available but, whoever comes in, it is going to be hard to replace him.

"At the moment I feel like they have to play differently when he is not in the team, but we saw on Sunday that it can work."

It certainly helps that Arsenal always pose such a threat from set-pieces, which have brought them more goals (23) than any other Premier League team since the start of last season.

"Again, that's why these coaches have been brought into these clubs," Walcott said. "But the key is the time they spend on these situations, every single day.

"When I was playing it was just the day before the game when you would work on set-pieces, but Arsenal do it all week. When I watched them in pre-season, they were even doing it then. They are so important, they started this process in the summer, rather than just getting the players fit.

"Their thinking is that this is where the difference will be in certain games and when you have players of the stature of Gabriel and Saliba, then of course you want to use them. It was the same with Mourinho's teams too - Terry would always pose a huge threat.

"You hear strikers like Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney talk about the time they spent focusing on their finishing every day after training, so it became like second nature to them. That kind repetition works with practicing set-pieces too, and this is Arsenal's reward."

'I think the big games are at night - I like it'

Bournemouth v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on preparing for an unusual evening kick-off: "We are going to train later today - we normally train similarly to the time we are going to play the next day. But I love these games - I think the big games are at night.

"It is probably easier for me [to get used to] because in Spain kick-offs at 8pm on a Saturday are quite normal. I like it and I remember liking it when I was a player. Hopefully we can do well also."

'It is not easy to know how Chelsea will play'

Bournemouth v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on how different it is to prepare to face Enzo Maresca's new-look Chelsea compared to the Blues side he faced last season: "I think there are some similarities, and they have most of the same players, but it is going to be a difficult game for us.

"Tactically, in these first three games, they have used three different structures because they have a lot of different players and alternatives. All the things that you do, they will do other things. It is not easy to know how they will play. We have to prepare for a lot of different options."

'I am going to sit on the fence' - Sutton

Bournemouth v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker

Bournemouth are still unbeaten this season, even if their win at Everton was fortunate - they had a good five minutes, but that was it... which is a bit like the way my career went.

I really don't know what to expect from Chelsea though, or if Cole Palmer is going to be fit enough to play. Because of that, I am going to sit on the fence and go for a draw.

Sutton's prediction: 1-1

'They are the rules - Kepa cannot play'

Bournemouth v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga being unavailable to face his home club: "We knew it before he came to the club. They are the rules - he cannot play. Mark [Travers] will start tomorrow and he has been very good when he has had the chance. I'm confident that he will do well."

On having two experienced goalkeepers to pick from now, he added: "These are good problems to have for a manager. Everyone has to push and has to give the best they can to win more minutes."

Enes Unal could be 'involved' against Chelsea

Bournemouth v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola confirmed Tyler Adams and Dango Ouattara will not be available to face Chelsea: "Tyler is still recovering from his surgery - I think he is doing well. Dango has come back injured from the national team - it is unlucky for us and unlucky for him."

Iraola also provided an injury update on David Brooks and Enes Unal: "I think we will kind of recover because Brooks has trained properly for two weeks and Enes has been training with us this week.

"Enes has a chance to be involved this weekend."

'This is a restart' - Glasner

Crystal Palace v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on the state of his squad: "I'm pleased with all our business on transfer deadline day. Great players with great characters and a good spirit in the group but we also have to be critical. Today was the first training session where we had all players available because of injuries.

"I told them this is like a restart and when you have a Formula One car and you have to change one tyre, it's the same in our squad. We have had 30 to 40% changes in our squad and this means we have to build a new group and find a common sense of how we want to play on the pitch and how we want to treat each other."

Silva reflects on his side's start to the season

Fulham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva reflecting on the start of the Premier League season: "The Man Utd game was a special game to be the first one. It was a game we played toe-to-toe with them. It was a was a good performance. A good reaction from ourselves against Leicester, It was clear we were the best team against Leicester and we won. And against Ipswich, a tough game like we expected. Performance wise it was not the best from us. Even so, we got one point."

Arteta on his admiration and respect for Postecoglou

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Arsenal

A final word from Mikel Arteta on the inspiration provided by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, as he prepares to go head-to-head with the Australian in Sunday's north London derby: "I admire him. I admire him and I respect him. I think he has been an inspirational coach in my career because he has done things in his own way in various contexts, in various countries.

"He has a very unique way of thinking about the game and his philosophy and I love it. He stands by it and I think, as well, he represents himself and the club in a really good way."

'We have made huge steps and still have a lot to make'

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta was asked about signing his new contract, which will keep him as Arsenal manager until 2027, and what motivated him to make that commitment: "We are going in the right direction, we have made some huge steps and we have a lot still to make. Due to the hunger - from the ownership to the board and all the players and staff here. That is the aim and objective [to win the Premier League]."

On whether he would have considered leaving for any other club or international manager's job: "No, the emotional attachment that I have, that my family has and my kids have [to Arsenal], as well as the experience that I have and the moment [I am sharing] with the people - it is too strong."

Wharton available for Palace

Crystal Palace v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Adam Wharton's availability for Saturday: "He's available. He just needed last week to train individually and have a few days off. This week he's been in every training session

On Chadi Riad's injury: "The doctor told us it will take eight to twelve weeks. It will take some time but in the beginning, we thought it was worse but they said it wasn't a rupture.

"Unfortunately Trevor Chalobah got injured in his first training session with us, so he's also not available tomorrow. It shouldn't be a long injury but he is also questionable for QPR."

'I've never felt like there is an easy way to success'

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on what winning would mean for the rest of the season: "It's hard to say. I've never felt like there is an easy way to success, I don't think one thing can change the trajectory to a great effect. It helps, a win in a big game, in a derby but it's a game against one of the top sides so that gives you more belief and confidence and potentially that can inject some real momentum into our season."

'I think he is going to make us better' - Arteta on Sterling

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Arsenal

More from Mikel Arteta on what Raheem Sterling can bring to the Arsenal team: "What I see is hunger. He is a player who wants to play every minute of every game. When that is not the case he's not happy.

"He loves football; it's something he likes doing every single day and I see that.

"His commitment and the level of energy that he is bringing into the team and the quality is a big boost. You can feel it in the players when he comes walking in the door that we are better with him. I think he is going to make us better."

On whether Arteta can unlock his goalscoring ability: "He has this ability - that is a credit to him, but also the players he has got around him. You need that as a front player certainly. He has got that will [to score goals] and the ability to do that. I am sure he is going to impact the team."

'Angeball will come out on top' - Sutton

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has just signed a new contract, so maybe his mind has been on that new deal and how he can spend it on furnishing his house rather than the north London derby.

Being serious, though, Rice and Odegaard are such big losses that I can't help but feel it will have an impact. Arsenal have got quality players like Jorginho and Thomas Partey to come into their midfield, but they are missing two of their best players.

The Gunners will get chances in this game and I expect them to score - they won this fixture 3-2 last season and drew 2-2 at the Emirates, and I am expecting more of the same.

This time, however, I am going to back Spurs. I know everyone who is reading this will probably go for a draw but I am not going to do that. Instead, I am going to stick my long neck out and say 'Angeball' will come out on top.

Spurs have dominated games and created chances this season, but they just need someone to stick the ball in the back of the net and I have a feeling that will happen for them here. If I am right, then we may as well hand the title to Manchester City.

Sutton's prediction: 3-2

'We know what it means to our supporters'

Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on the north London rivalry: "Every derby is a bit different, obviously this one, you can tell it's fairly intense between the two clubs, obviously geographically situated in the same part of town. On the same turf, there's a little bit of an edge. I thought both games last year were entertaining. I thought we played well in their place, and really matched with them. We know what it means to our supporters and the club we've got to go out there and perform."

Tottenham v Arsenal: Gunners to wear away kit in fixture for first time in 38 years

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Arsenal will wear their away kit in Sunday's north London derby for the first time in 38 years after their red-and-white home shirt was deemed to clash with Tottenham's colours.

The Gunners will don their black away strip at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said their home shirt "features too much white".

Arsenal also said wearing their home shirt with red shorts and socks was discussed but not agreed on.

As part of PGMOL's decision, Tottenham will also wear their away kit when they visit Emirates Stadium in the reverse fixture in January.

"The PGMOL and Premier League ruled that our 2024-25 home kit features too much white, thus clashing with Tottenham’s traditional colours, even with the option of red shorts and socks for us, which was also discussed," said Arsenal.

"As a result, for the first time in recent 'NLD' history, we'll be wearing our change colours."

Arsenal Shirt Collection on X, external say the club last wore their away shirt in the derby during the 1985-86 season.

Mikel Arteta's side go into the match fourth in the Premier League with seven points from their opening three games, while Spurs are 10th on four points.

The Gunners have won on their past two visits to Tottenham.

Kyle Walker: Andre Villas-Boas cried after Tottenham sacking

Kyle Walker: Andre Villas-Boas cried after Tottenham sacking - BBC
Description

Kyle Walker says former Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas "started crying in front of us" when he was sacked by chairman Daniel Levy in December 2013.

The Manchester City defender, who spent eight years at Spurs between 2009-17, described his former manager as "so, so nice," on the latest episode of the You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast.

Walker says he will "never, ever forget" the moment Villas-Boas addressed his Spurs team following his sacking, revealing that members of the squad also broke down in tears.

"I've got tears running down my eyes... Michael Dawson is welling up," said the 34-year-old. "That's how much he meant to the lads."

Portuguese manager Villas-Boas took charge of Spurs in July 2012 and almost guided the club to the Champions League in his first season - finishing just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.

Spurs' squad that year included 2012-13 PFA Player of the Year, Gareth Bale.

The Wales star made a then-world record £85.3m move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 and, despite reinvesting in the squad, the team struggled the following season.

After a string of poor results, a chastening 5-0 defeat by Liverpool in December 2013 saw Villas-Boas given his marching orders.

Walker says he regrets the fact the team did not perform well enough to keep their manager in his job.

"Bale was a massive, massive loss," he said. "They signed seven players off the back of the Bale money. There's a lot of changes there and we just never really gelled in time for him [Villas-Boas] to then do well."

Despite the fact that the team "didn't do him justice", Walker says of his former boss, "for 10 or 12 men to be crying because the manager's gone, he's done something well in the dressing room".

Walker also spoke on the podcast about his relationship with former Spurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

He had been a stalwart for Tottenham, but during his final season he faced competition at right-back from fellow England international Kieran Trippier.

He said he has the "utmost respect" for Trippier, but felt it was "a little bit of a low blow” when Pochettino opted to start the former Burnley defender ahead of him for Spurs' last ever game at their former ground, White Hart Lane - a 2-1 win against Manchester United in May 2017.

"He [Pochettino] brought me on at, like, 84 minutes or something like that," said Walker. "That's the one thing that really hurt me.

"I just felt that I've been here for so long. That ground actually meant so much to me."

Walker said Pochettino gave him permission to leave the club in the summer of 2017 after telling him Trippier would be his first choice right-back.

However, the 34-year-old said he "doesn't have a bad word to say" about his former coach and that, "I say thank you and whenever I see him, I give him a hug and a cuddle and that's it".

Description

Wales midfielder Josie Green has joined Crystal Palace after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old, capped 23 times by Wales, reunites with Palace boss Laura Kaminski, who coached Green during her seven-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur, and will count Wales colleague Elise Hughes among her new team-mates.

Green said: "I'm super excited to start and get going with all the girls.

"You can see that Palace are really building as a club and pushing the women's game forward, and I am so excited to be a part of it."

Green joined Leicester in July 2022 but was one of six players released by the Foxes at the end of last season.

Palace head of women's football Grace Williams said: "It's fantastic that Josie has chosen to join us at Palace.

"Josie brings vast experience of the WSL (Women's Super League) to the squad from her spells at both Leicester and Spurs, as well as plenty of experience of international football too, and I am looking forward to seeing her out on the pitch."

League Two side Notts County have signed Tottenham U21 captain George Abbott on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old midfielder Abbott led Spurs to the Premier League 2 title last season and produced a goal and two assists across the semi-final and final of their subsequent play-off triumph.

“He’s incredibly well thought of at Spurs, as reflected by their decision to give him a new three-year deal this summer," said Notts County director Richard Montague.

“We’re really pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to his development and have every confidence he will make a big impact in his time with us.”

Richarlison, who picked up an injury in training, will miss the next few weeks.
