Rangers' 'special' Mikey Moore always stood out - Jermain Defoe

'Special' Moore always stood out - Defoe - BBC
Description

Former Rangers forward Jermain Defoe has praised the impact of "special" Mikey Moore after the Tottenham loanee scored in the Ibrox side's Old Firm victory.

Moore has played 24 times since making the season-long switch from Spurs, and arguably had his finest moment in light blue by scoring the third in a 3-1 win at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Defoe played a key role in the 18-year-old midfielder coming north after receiving a phone call from him for guidance in the summer.

"What a story that is," said Defoe, who worked with Moore while coaching in the Spurs academy.

"When I finished playing, I did two years in the academy under-18s. I think he was about 16. As soon as I saw him in training, I thought, 'this kid's got something special'. And I just tried to work with him as much as possible.

"He was always the one that stood out for me. When we played games in under-18s, he was head and shoulders above all the other players that we played against. I got a phone call from him in the summer.

"He said, 'I've got a chance to go to Rangers'. I said, 'you've got to go, to get a chance to go and experience what I experienced there. Trust me, you'll love it'.

"It's amazing to see him scoring in this game and I'll text him in a bit. It's special - he must be delighted because he's just a young kid that just loves football. He'll be buzzing after this."

Rangers are now level on points with Celtic after a dismal start to the campaign under Russell Martin.

Both teams trail Hearts by six points, but now under the guidance of Danny Rohl, the Ibrox club have strung together a level of consistency that has quietly pushed them back into title contention.

During a three-year spell at Ibrox, Defoe clinched the Scottish Premiership title when Steven Gerrard was manager, and the former England forward believes the latest Old Firm result is "huge" for his old team.

"This win is a massive win because both clubs have had their struggles," he said.

"And now they're both level on points. Rangers winning this game and how they won, this is huge.

"Not just for the players but for everyone involved in the football club, and the fans. It's one of the biggest games in world football."

It is a sentiment echoed by Ibrox centre-half John Souttar, who told Rangers TV: "I think we have experience in the squad and you have to help the younger boys.

"The atmosphere can be intimidating for some lads, but we didn't show it today. Everyone stood up and took the ball and aggression off the ball was massive.

"We have momentum, athleticism, speed and power and when we do that and press high and put them under pressure then we have a great chance to win and we did that."

And Souttar added: "The supporters were amazing. Some of my family were here and it was incredible.

"It is a special moment for everyone here, but we want to make sure there are more of these in the months and years to come.

"We have to build on this. We have to keep the momentum building and do the basics and what the manager wants from us and then we can see where we go."

Post

Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

Newcastle aren't exactly knocking down Crystal Palace's door right now but they are on the front foot.

Brennan Johnson, making his Palace debut following a £35m move from Spurs, has barely had a sniff so far.

Fulham get away with one

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

Aadam Patel

Football Reporter at Craven Cottage

That was a real opening for Cody Gakpo. The run is terrific but he scuffs his strike. But it's the first sign of Liverpool breaking through the lines. Fulham get away with one.

'Fulham need to make up numbers in midfield'

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

Mark Schwarzer

Former Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper on 5 Live at Craven Cottage

When Fulham do have balls doing into midfield, one of the centre halves or wide players need to come in. Liverpool have players dropping short a lot so Fulham need to look to make up the numbers.

'Better from Spurs'

Tottenham 0-0 Sunderland

Curtis Davies

Former Premier League defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

It's a really quick kick taken and Richarlison bends his run.

When Mathys Tel cuts inside there's only one thing on his mind. It was always going to the right-hand side of the post. Better attacking impetus from Tottenham.

Post

Everton 0-1 Brentford

Brentford striker Igor Thiago is a livewire, even though he didn't score a goal in December.

He beats Michael Keane twice as he runs onto a long ball but sees his shot blocked by Vitalii Mykolenko.

CLOSE!

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

Curtis Jones picks out the run of Cody Gakpo through a gap in the Fulham defence. He never truly looks set as he goes left-footed towards the far post but Bernd Leno watches it trickle past the post.

CLOSE!

Tottenham 0-0 Sunderland

Good play by Tottenham as Richarlison times a run well to get to a ball down the right. Spurs then work it across the pitch to Mathys Tel, whose attempt to place a shot into the far corner goes just wide.

Loud boos at St James' Park

Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

Ciaran Kelly

BBC Sport reporter at St James' Park

Loud boos at St James' Park after Newcastle United's goal is disallowed. It was tight.

But that was a glimpse of the lightning pace the hosts carry through Yoane Wissa and Anthony Gordon - not that Crystal Palace will now need reminding.

Post

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

Fulham are letting Liverpool dictate the early play here but the Reds are hardly causing much of a threat.

It's being played at walking pace.

'Warning for Palace'

Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

Rob Elliot

Newcastle goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 3

It's brilliant from Wissa. I don't think Gordon was expecting him to square it. His awareness to slide it to Gordon is great. Palace will be disappointed because they had started well defensively.

That is a warning for Palace.

Disappointment for Kudus

Tottenham 0-0 Sunderland

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Real blow for Spurs and Mohammed Kudus as he is off injured. He had made a busy start but his day is done. Randal Kolo Muani now has the chance to make his mark.

Tottenham vs Sunderland predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game

Tottenham vs Sunderland predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game - BBC
Description

I'm not sure if Sunderland will have anything left in the tank after their efforts against Manchester City on Thursday.

It was another example of why they have done so well - they defended brilliantly, but they were dangerous when they got the ball and they could have beaten City too.

Mind you, Tottenham are so drab at the moment that it probably won't matter too much if the Black Cats are low on energy.

Sunderland are always so well-organised at the back, while I don't think Spurs, in an attacking sense, have really clicked this season.

Tottenham will be exhausted as well so I don't see many goals in this one - in fact, I don't see any at all.

A goalless draw is unlikely to cheer the Spurs supporters up much, either.

I know they love getting angry, but they are a fanbase who don't actually seem to know what they want - is it a manager who delivers attractive attacking football, or someone who can set up a team to keep a clean sheet every week?

Sutton's prediction: 0-0

Tottenham vs Sunderland: Key stats and talking points - BBC

New year, same Spurs?

Tottenham's start to 2026 was an amalgamation of their 2025 under head coach Thomas Frank – a 0-0 draw at Brentford represented another point won on the road and another game where they created very few chances.

The result means Spurs have the best away record in the top flight at the halfway stage – with 18 points amassed from 10 games – but it was yet another match where they were toothless in attack for almost the entire 90 minutes.

The performance was greeted with what can best be described as gallows humour from the travelling Spurs contingent, who punctuated the lack of action with songs about fan favourites Dele Alli, Eric Dier and even former manager Martin Jol. They also chanted "Boring, boring Tottenham" and jeered current boss Frank as he approached them at the full-time whistle.

"It's not perfect… we want us to be free-flowing," said Frank in his pre-match press conference on Friday. "We need to do everything we can to put in an attacking, intense, front-footed performance against Sunderland."

Black Cats could change Tottenham's fortunes

Tottenham's home form in 2025 was their worst on record and 11 league defeats in front of their own fans is the most they have ever suffered in a single calendar year.

However, the Lilywhites have an enviable record when it comes to this fixture. They are unbeaten in their previous 14 top-flight meetings with Sunderland since a 3-1 loss at the Stadium of Light in April 2010 and have won 14 of their 16 Premier League home matches against the north-east club (D1, L1).

Another victory this weekend could spark Tottenham's season into life and would go some way to repairing the apparent rift between head coach and fans.

Description

Oxford United have signed midfielder Jamie Donley from Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the rest of the season.

The club have also announced that the deal has an option for the U's to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.

Donley started the season on loan at Stoke City where he made six appearances and registered one assist before being recently recalled.

He has played four times for the Tottenham first team after coming through the club's youth ranks and also he had a spell on loan at Leyton Orient last season.

Despite playing for the England youth sides early on in his career, the 20-year-old represents Northern Ireland and has six international caps and a goal since his debut in early 2025.

"I want to influence games and be decisive in the final third, but that all starts with hard work. I take real pride in working for the team and doing the basics right," Donley told the club website, external.

"My loan experiences have taught me a lot. I've had big highs and challenging moments but those are what shape you as a player. I feel ready to come here, compete, and show what I can bring"

Donley is eligible to make his U's debut in their next Championship match against Sheffield United on Sunday (12:00 GMT).

Brennan Johnson set to be in Crystal Palace's squad to face Newcastle after Tottenham exit

Brennan Johnson set to be in Crystal Palace's squad to face Newcastle after Tottenham exit - BBC
Description

Brennan Johnson is set to be included in Crystal Palace's squad to face Newcastle on Sunday after finalising a club record £35m move from Tottenham.

Palace are expected to announce the signing of the Wales forward inside the next 24 hours after Johnson completed the formalities of his move across London on Friday.

The 24-year-old attracted interest from Bournemouth, with the Cherries keen to sign a replacement for Manchester City target Antoine Semenyo.

But, after talks with Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Thursday, Johnson was persuaded to move to Selhurst Park.

Johnson's arrival will break the club's record transfer fee paid, eclipsing the £27m the Eagles paid for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke in 2016.

The forward joined Spurs in a £47.5m deal from Nottingham Forest in 2023 and scored the winner as the club ended their 17-year wait for silverware with Europa League success last season.

But Johnson's minutes have been limited under Spurs manager Thomas Frank this term, with the Wales international scoring four goals in 22 appearances.

Regis le Bris press conference: Tottenham Hotspur vs Sunderland - BBC
Description

Le Bris has players missing at Afcon and Dan Ballard is out injured. However, his players who have stepped up have done well: "I told you before the Afcon we don't have to set a limit because we have many good players. They have to learn and show their quality on the pitch. If you give them the structure, the confidence and great leaders they will play well."

The boss commented on how Eliezer Mayenda has been one of those players: "He showed he can deliver in another position and he is totally different from the start of the season he played as a striker. He plays a hybrid role and I am confident in him. He is really young and learning. He is more versatile which is important as a manager."

On the clean sheet against Manchester City: "It is really positive for the club, squad and lads because we are playing against the best in Europe and it shows we can be confident. It is good for the confidence and good for the individual projects. We need to reset quickly because this is relentless. It's important to show that it is a tough place to be. If you are not bold or aggressive it is impossible to protect your goal."

Le Bris is hopeful for the Spurs game: "It will be a tough challenge - they are in a great place. It will be an exciting challenge for the squad. Like us they have highs and lows, but the main thing for us is how we identify. We can expect gifts from the opponent, so let's focus on this."
