Description

Tottenham have lost three of their last four Premier League meetings with Aston Villa, though did win the last such match 4-0 in March. They’d only lost two of their previous 21 against the Villans (W16 D3).

Aston Villa have won three of their last four Premier League away games against Tottenham (L1), including the last two in a row under Unai Emery. They last won three consecutive away league games against Spurs between 1922 and 1924.

Tottenham have lost nine of their last 16 Premier League games (W6 D1), with only Wolves (12) losing more since the first game in this run in April. Spurs had only lost seven of their first 31 games under Ange Postecoglou (W18 D6).

Tottenham have conceded the first goal in 11 of their 13 home Premier League matches in 2024 but have come back to win seven of those games. The only team with more home wins when conceding first in a single year are Newcastle United in 2002 (8).

Only Liverpool (13) and Nottingham Forest (11) have won more away Premier League points this season than Aston Villa (10 – W3 D1). Villa have only won as many as four of their opening five away league games in a season once before, doing so in 2020-21 (W4 L1).

Aston Villa have won nine of their 13 away Premier League games in London under Unai Emery (D3 L1). That 69% win ratio is the best by a manager at a single club in away games in London in Premier League history (min. 10 games).

Only two of Tottenham’s last 71 home Premier League games has ended as a draw (W47 L22) and they are the only side without a home draw since the start of last season (W16 L7).

Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min has been involved in nine goals in eight Premier League games against Aston Villa (6 goals, 3 assists), though all six of his goals against them have come at Villa Park. No player has scored more against an opponent without netting a home goal in the competition.

In 2024, Aston Villa have scored the most Premier League goals from subs (10) and have the most goals and assists combined from subs (10 goals, 7 assists). It is the joint most sub goals they’ve scored in a single year, also netting 10 in 2023.

'Timber is fine'

Preston North End v Arsenal (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on fitness: "Jurrien [Timber] is fine. Obviously very excited, been out for a while, could not continue the game but there is no new injury there."

On Martin Odegaard: "He's been on grass for a few weeks, still a few boxes to tick."

No 'more exciting option' than Amorim

Alex Turk

Man Utd fan writer

Ruud van Nistelrooy will receive a hero's welcome on Wednesday when United host Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. The Dutch legend's Old Trafford return was heralded among excited fans in the summer and he will be passionately backed for as long as his interim tenure lasts.

But that is all it should be. United must retain Van Nistelrooy on the coaching staff while appointing a manager with more established credentials.

The chosen candidate appears to be Ruben Amorim of Sporting. He's won two Liga Portugal titles and two Taca da Ligas across a four-year reign in Lisbon. Established credentials... check.

Only 39, the attack-minded coach, loyal to his 3-4-3 system, already has a taste for silverware and a track record of helping young players thrive while also representing an attractive long-term option.

The concept of snatching him from Manchester City's grasp - amid talk of Amorim replacing Pep Guardiola next summer - is a bonus. But this is about United, and Ineos couldn't currently select a more exciting option.

Rodri's Ballon d'Or 'a win for football'

Freddie Pye

Man City fan writer

The Ballon d'Or was in danger of becoming a glorified popularity contest, as opposed to recognising true football brilliance and performances on the field. With Rodri winning the prize, we can once again talk of this trophy as a salute towards the very best football star in the world.

We are talking about true football excellence and intelligence from Rodri here, while forgetting the human side of a man that is far from the normal modern day professional footballer. This is a success for a global superstar with no social media, no manufactured PR campaign behind him and merely a recognition of an athlete who has mastered his craft by committing his life to the sport he loves.

This is on-field performance combined with exemplary behaviour on and off the pitch, establishing himself as the complete football role model by reinventing the perceptions of a midfield orchestrator.

They are the Rules of Allocation for the Ballon d'Or. This is a win for football. This is justice for the Ballon d'Or itself. A football prize saved by Rodri - the ultimate professional, the ultimate midfielder and history-maker for Manchester City, Spain, and the midfield professional in the game.

Ballon d'Or 'missed the opportunity' to pay tribute to Vini Jr

Iara Diniz

BBC Monitoring

More on the reaction in Brazil to Vinicius Jr missing out on the Ballon d'Or.

Milly Lacombe, a sports commentator for Brazil’s UOL news website, said, external that the Ballon d'Or "missed the opportunity to pay a heartfelt tribute to the most talked-about player of the season - known for his dribbling, goals, ability to make decisive plays, and social activism."

Following the Ballon d'Or results, Vinicius Jr posted a message on X, external saying, "I will do it 10x if I have to. They are not ready."

His post received more than 100,000 comments, with many Brazilians showing their support. Brazil's minister of racial equality, Anielle Franco, reacted to the message: "You are amazing, Vini! Racism will never stop us. Let's keep making history."

Galvao Bueno, one of the biggest Brazilian sports commentators, posted a video, external on his YouTube channel criticising the selection methods of Ballon d'Or.

"It's not just a matter of football, of who plays better, this award has a European bias," he said, adding that Vini Jr was not awarded the prize due to his attitude against racism and his story. "He causes discomfort."

Ballon d'Or snub 'could harm Real's reputation' - Calderon

BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes the club's snubbing of Monday's Ballon d'Or awards is a decision "that they have to explain".

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Calderon said: "I am very glad to know that our compatriot [Rodri] has won that title. Of course Vinicius could have won it, Rodri or Carvajal - but only one can get that trophy and I suppose there are criteria to decide that. The journalists gave the trophy to Rodri - that’s it. You have to accept it.

"We were awarded the best team of last year and also Ancelotti was awarded as the best coach. This is a team game, so I think it is as much important to win that title that includes all the players, than to win only one of them.

"I can’t say we need respect because we were awarded the title of the best club of the year. What more do you want to expect?

“If I had any hint or evidence that something wrong has been done then maybe I would have done the same but if not, of course I would have gone. We are the greatest club in the world - as recognised by anyone in the football world and we have to behave accordingly. This can harm our reputation unfortunately."

Vinicius Jr not winning Ballon d'Or 'the biggest injustice'

Iara Diniz

BBC Monitoring

Brazilian news commentators have described the decision not to award Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr the Ballon d'Or as an unjust and retaliatory move, with some concluding that it was the most controversial decision in the award's history.

Many claimed the 24-year-old Brazilian was denied the award due to his stance against the racism he has faced in Spain.

"We know that Vinicius Jr. is a target of racism in Spanish football and other parts of Europe, and he actively fights against racism. This leads us to question whether the result that gave Rodri the win was influenced by prejudice and racism against Vinicius Jr," said Guga Chacra, external, a commentator from the leading Brazilian TV news network Globo News.

Gustavo Faldon, sports editor for the Brazilian daily Estadao, external, said: "The [treatment of] Vincius Jr was the biggest injustice in the history of Ballon d’Or."

"The fact that he is Brazilian, plays for Real Madrid, and is a forward should have worked in his favour in the history of the award. It sounds like an injustice to me," said Rodrigo Bueno, a sports commentator for ESPN Brasil, external.

Commentators also strongly disagreed that the award recipient Rodri had performed better than Vinicius last season.

"The fact that Vini Jr wasn't awarded the title of best player in the world at the Ballon d'Or is yet another way to try to penalise the Brazilian for his outspoken stance on racial issues, both on and off the field," wrote Douglas Ceconello, a journalist for Brazilian sports website Globo Esporte., external

Rodri 'deserved' Ballon d'Or win, says Guardiola

Manchester City

A little earlier, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said that Rodri is a worthy winner of the 2024 men's Ballon d'Or award.

City's Spain midfielder saw off competition from Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham - who finished second and third respectively.

Rodri was instrumental in City's Premier League title victory in May and was named player of the tournament as Spain won Euro 2024.

Real Madrid were absent from the ceremony after reportedly learning that Vinicius, who was clear favourite for the award, had not won.

"If they [Real Madrid] want to go, it's fine. If they don't, it's fine as well," said former Barcelona manager Guardiola. "If they want to congratulate, it's fine. If they don't want to congratulate, it's fine as well.

"If you are in the first two or three [places] it's exceptional. It means you have done an incredible year and you have to be so satisfied.

"Should it be Vinicius? Maybe. It's [voted by] journalists, you know, not an elite group of people who decide. It's [journalists] all around the world that votes, not just one country. There are different opinions, and that's what makes football nice, no?"

Guardiola added: "I think Rodri perfectly represents City, but also Spanish football and their influence in world football. In the last 10, 15 years it has been massively important - not just winning trophies but the way they play.

"Maybe in that moment Xavi and Iniesta deserved it as well. I think maybe Rodri gets what Spanish football deserves."

'We have to deal with setbacks' - Ten Hag's last comments as Man Utd boss

Man Utd v Leicester (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

As Simon Stone mentioned earlier, quotes from Erik ten Hag that were subject to an embargo until today, have landed.

Speaking before he was sacked by Manchester United yesterday, Ten Hag said: "We have to do better. At the end of the season, we have to get this right, but of course it is not easy when you have so many setbacks at the start of the season to overcome this.

"We have to fight back, but it always helps when you have a good start because it keeps motivation, keeps belief, the confidence will grow. We are now in the process on the other side where we are disappointed and have to deal with setbacks. Now we have to find the fuel from setbacks and disappointments."

I'm sure his former assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is now United's interim boss, would agree.

Carabao Cup: Leicester 'won't overthink' impact of Ten Hag exit

Man Utd v Leicester (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

Leicester City

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper on whether Erik ten Hag's departure changes his game plan: "We won't overthink that. If you do, you can end up going to loads of places that end up being miles away from what it is.

"Being a manager, you want to show how good your ideas are and that's no different tomorrow. It's even more reason tomorrow to focus on ourselves. We've got to make sure we take that opportunity."

I'm sure Ten Hag will bounce back when he is ready - Cooper

Man Utd v Leicester (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

Leicester City

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper onErik ten Hag's departure from Old Trafford: "Whatever level you work at, it's a demanding job. The highs and lows are as extreme as it gets. You applaud managers when they do well and you feel for them when they don't, that's how I feel for Erik and any manager who loses their job. It's a very, very high profile job at a huge club with plenty of scrutiny. It's never nice to see, but I wish him well and I am sure he will bounce back, as and when he is ready."

What pressure will his successor be under? "Like any job, you feel the pressure because you go to a club, you take on the responsibility. Whatever the size of the club, it means the same. It obviously falls into the guys at Manchester United. We're now preparing for a cup game and trying to perform to get through to the next round."

Description

Crystal Palace have won just one of their last 18 Premier League games against Tottenham (D2 L15), a 3-0 home win in September 2021 under Patrick Vieira when Spurs were top of the league.

Tottenham have won 19 of their 30 Premier League games against Crystal Palace (D7 L4), their highest win rate against any fellow London side in the competition’s history (63%).

Crystal Palace won five of their first seven home Premier League matches under Oliver Glasner (D1 L1), scoring 22 goals. Since then, they’re winless in four at Selhurst Park (D2 L2), failing to score in three.

Tottenham Hotspur have won three of their last four Premier League matches (L1), as many as they had in their previous 11 games (W3 D1 L7).

With just three points won, this is Crystal Palace’s joint-worst start to a top-flight campaign after eight matches (counting 3 points/win, also three in 1980-81, 2013-14 and 2017-18). Meanwhile, it’s only the second time they’ve failed to win any of their first eight in a top-flight campaign, after the 1992-93 season when they were relegated.

Tottenham Hotspur have made the most runs into the opposition penalty area (449) and also made the most overlapping runs in the final third (100) in the Premier League this season. Spurs players also top those categories individually – Dominic Solanke with 93 runs into the box and Dejan Kulusevski making 17 final-third overlapping runs.

Tottenham are second only to Manchester City for shots (145), shots on target (55), touches in the opposition box (355) and successful opposition half passes (2,069) in the Premier League this season. However, Spurs rank top for passes played into the opponent penalty area (306) and expected goals (16.95).

Since scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United in October 2023 (for Arsenal), Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah has played 804 minutes in the Premier League without finding the net. Indeed, he’s currently on a run of 30 shots without scoring in the competition.

Spurs midfielder James Maddison could make his 200th Premier League appearance in this match. Maddison ranks top for passes played into the opposition penalty area this season (72), while he has five assists in his last 11 games.

Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min has been involved in 10 goals in his last 13 Premier League London derbies (7 goals, 3 assists). Son has 39 goals and assists in London derby matches (27 goals, 12 assists), the joint-fifth most of any player in Premier League history.

'I am backing Tottenham'

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (14:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace are desperate to get their first league win of the season, but any sort of positive result would do after losing their past three games.

I was at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday with BBC Radio 5 Live for Arsenal versus Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League, and Roy Hodgson was there as a Uefa technical observer. Is his next step a return to the Palace hotseat?

I am saying that tongue in cheek because there is no way they will bring him back - or that he would go back - but Eagles manager Oliver Glasner is already under pressure and the heat will really be on if they lose this game.

I am backing Tottenham, although I am a bit concerned about the fitness of Son Heung-min, who is back from injury but was rested for their Europa League game with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.

Tiredness could affect other players. Spurs play high-pressing and high-energy football and I wonder what playing twice a week will do to them.

Also, the way Tottenham play might suit Palace more, because Eberechi Eze will have a lot more space than he had in their defeat against Nottingham Forest on Monday.

So Palace should pose more of a threat, but Spurs blew West Ham away and, while this will be a lot closer, I still expect them to win.

Sutton's prediction: 1-2

'Ugarte won't change the world but why not throw him in?'

West Ham v Man Utd (14:00 GMT)

Ellen White

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think it is fair on Manuel Ugarte to put all of United's issues on him and to say that when he comes in he will fix it. They are in need of a great player in the number six role, in front of that back line.

But why not throw him in there and allow him to get the minutes and build connections with his teammates? He won't change the world because other players need to step up, but why not play him?

'I'm always wrong about Man Utd - I'm going to let my daughter predict this one'

West Ham v Man Utd (14:00 GMT)

Things did not get any better for Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui with their defeat against Tottenham, and it seems he still doesn’t know what the 'West Ham way' is.

The Hammers need a big improvement, but this game is more about what Manchester United do and whether they turn up.

They were excellent in the second half of their win over Brentford last time out, but now they need to back it up, and for 90 minutes.

Can they do it? You just never know with Manchester United, and I've given up on backing them to beat anyone.

They are inconsistent and what doesn’t help is that they are playing in Turkey in the Europa League on Thursday night, so team selection and tiredness has to come into the equation too.

My daughter is doing some maths revision with me at the moment, working out the area of triangles - you multiply the height by the width, then halve it.

I can get all of those sums right, but I am always wrong about United, so I am going to let her make this prediction.

Sutton's prediction: 1-2

Isak contract situation 'complex'

Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has described contract talks with Alexander Isak as a "complex situation".

Newcastle signed Isak, 25, from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a club record fee of £63m.

The Sweden striker has scored 36 goals in 74 games for the club but has netted just once this season.

Speaking before Newcastle's Premier League trip to Chelsea on Sunday, Howe was asked about Isak's future at St James' Park.

"That's a slightly more complex situation," Howe said.

"Regarding contracts, I'm not involved in those discussions day to day. With Alex, he's got a long contract anyway at the football club and we have to be really careful with our spending due to profit and sustainability rules (PSR). It's not a clear-cut situation."

'I was almost crying on the pitch'

Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

Shamoon Hafez

BBC Sport football news reporter

When Premier League champions Manchester City came to St James' Park last month, the Newcastle fans showcased a huge banner in the Gallowgate end in recognition of their star winger Anthony Gordon, which the player admitted almost left him "crying on the pitch".

Now there will be a feeling of relief from supporters after one of the club's 'untouchables' seemingly ended any speculation about his future by signing a new long-term deal.

The 23-year-old's bumper new contract is a show of faith from the club for his fine form last season and a signal of intent to maintain a team around Gordon, striker Alexander Isak and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

"I was almost crying on the pitch," Gordon said in a post-match interview, with the club. "I don't think fans will ever quite know what that stuff will mean because I have got family and a little son watching in the stadium so they are memories that will stay with me forever."

Man Utd must 'stay patient' with Ugarte

West Ham v Man Utd (14:00 GMT)

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says "we have to stay patient" with midfielder Manuel Ugarte as he continues to integrate into the team.

The 23-year-old Uruguay international, who joined from Paris St-Germain in the summer, has made four Premier League appearances so far, with three of those coming off the bench, and is among the substitutes again today.

"You have to integrate them," said Ten Hag on Ugarte. "He came in late in the window and then we had to integrate him during the competitions, and that takes time.

"We have to stay patient but, as you see, if the quality in that position is not right it's very difficult for a team to control games - and then I don't even speak about dominating games.

"So, that position needs one who brings the quality all the time, and we have to integrate him now in this team.

"I'm pleased with his performance [against Fenerbahce] and from here on he can build up."

Tottenham v West Ham scuffle: Spurs fined £20,000 over melee

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham Hotspur have been fined £20,000 by the Football Association after accepting a charge of failing to control their players during the 4-1 win against West Ham United.

Both clubs were charged on Tuesday for failing to ensure their players "didn't behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way".

Spurs admitted the charge and accepted the fine for the scuffle in last weekend's game.

The altercation occurred after Mohamed Kudus kicked Spurs defender Micky van de Ven then pushed the Netherlands defender and midfielder Pape Matar Sarr in the face.

The Ghana winger was initially shown a yellow card but it was upgraded to a red after a review by the video assistant referee.

The 24-year-old will serve a three-match ban for his dismissal.

He was separately charged on Tuesday for improper conduct for an incident "after the offence he was sent off for".

The former Ajax winger could serve an extra punishment on top of the three-game suspension if found guilty.

West Ham and Kudus have until Thursday to provide their responses.
