Elisabeth Terland scored her first two goals in Manchester United colours to help them cruise to a 3-0 win over Tottenham in the Women's Super League.

Terland, who joined United from Brighton in July, slammed in a cross from former Spurs forward Celin Bizet off the underside of the crossbar for the opener at Leigh Sports Village.

The Norwegian pair linked up again a minute later to give United a healthy lead just before the break, with Terland heading home Bizet's whipped ball to the back post.

Captain Maya Le Tissier completed the scoring when she slotted in from the penalty spot after Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Terland was denied a hat-trick when her low strike was tipped onto the post by Becky Spencer, but she left the pitch to a warm standing ovation when she was replaced by Rachel Williams after 76 minutes.

The result ensures Marc Skinner's side maintains their 100% record in the WSL with three wins from three this season.

Despite a comfortable scoreline for the hosts, it was Spurs who made the brighter start with Martha Thomas forcing an early save by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Clare Hunt and Bethany England saw efforts drift just wide, while Drew Spence saw her rifled strike from the edge of the area tipped over by Tullis-Joyce.

However, Spurs were left playing catch-up thanks to Terland's double and the visitors' chances were limited in the second half.

Tottenham news: James Maddison, England and Premier League form

Description

Is anyone else relieved James Maddison has not been selected for the England squad?

I’m thrilled for Dominic Solanke – it is great to see his hard work rewarded. Although unlikely to feature much in the games, it is a useful confidence boost to be recognised in this way, and a good opportunity to train with a different set of elite professionals.

But Madders? We will keep him wrapped in cotton wool thank you very much. After a blistering start to his Spurs career last season, Maddison struggled following the injury he sustained against Chelsea. In fact, last season followed a familiar pattern for the midfielder: a strong start followed by an injury, resulting in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to regain his form before the summer break.

Clearly he was devastated not to be included in the England squad for Euro 2024, but it gave him the perfect opportunity to rest, train and return to the Premier League in optimum condition. So I was expecting big things this season. Captivating creativity. An abundance of assists. Glorious goals.

So far he has two assists and two goals in the Premier League, and one assist in the Europa League. Not exactly electrifying, but pretty decent statistics nonetheless.

In addition, his overall play has improved – particularly his movement off the ball. He is starting to play with that swagger again, and confidence is everything with playmakers like Maddison.

It also helps when he has a point to prove as his play becomes more purposeful and unrelenting – something that was evident in his first half performance against Brighton. The less said about anyone’s performance in the second half of that game, the better.

Selfishly, I hope missing out on a spot in the England squad will help Maddison have a better season for Spurs.

Tottenham: Phil McNulty on Ange Postecoglou

A Tottenham related question was put to chief football writer Phil McNulty in Monday's Q&A.

James asked: Hi Phil, as a Spurs fan, I can't help but feel like we're slowly falling into a similar pattern of behaviour that has been present over the last few years. I like Ange but his stubbornness seems to be a blessing one week and a curse the next. Do you have any advice on how we can gain a bit of consistency? Looking forward to hearing a bit of positivity on this dreary Monday morning.

Phil answered: Hi James, what a different Monday morning feeling to seven days ago for Spurs fans. All was light after a fantastic performance and win at Manchester United, then you have the collapse from 2-0 up at Brighton. If you look for positivity, I think Spurs are an incredibly good team to watch but with Ange Postecoglou’s all-out attacking approach, lows may well come with highs.

I’ve said before I feel he needs to be more pragmatic to sustain a top four challenge and win the big prizes and you have seen both sides to that in the last seven days. I honestly do not think he will change and will succeed or fail on those principles. And while we talk about the manager, the Spurs players should really have managed that situation better yesterday. Postecoglou took responsibility but he was right, the second half was “unacceptable”.

Tottenham Hotspur: Johnson form 'no coincidence' after deleting Instagram

Former Wales striker Rob Earnshaw believes Brennan Johnson embarking on an impressive goalscoring run for Tottenham after deleting his social media account is not a coincidence.

The winger, 23, reportedly deactivated his Instagram page following criticism received after Spurs' 1-0 loss to north London rivals Arsenal in September.

He has gone on to score in each of Tottenham's six matches since defeat by the Gunners.

Johnson is with Wales as they prepare to resume their Nations League campaign against Iceland in Reykjavík on Friday before hosting Montenegro in Cardiff three days later.

Earnshaw feels Johnson's decision to remove himself from social media has played a key role in his upturn in form under Ange Postecoglou.

“I think it’s different for everybody, but for sure there’s something in it because I think for him it was clearly affecting him with social media and it’s (deleting the account) clearly had a real positive impact," Earnshaw told BBC Radio Wales.

"It’s no coincidence for him because I think the reason he deactivated it was because of all the negativity and everything was going into his game and over thinking and then all of a sudden he was thinking about that as he’s playing."

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool: Women's Super League - BBC Sport

Marie Hobinger scored a stoppage-time penalty as Liverpool registered their first Women's Super League win of the season in a five-goal thriller with Tottenham.

Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have fouled Sophie Roman Haug in the box and Hobinger stepped up to guide the ball past the outstretched arm of Tottenham goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

Clare Hunt had scored in the 83rd minute, from Neville's cross, as Tottenham looked to have sealed a point.

The Reds had gone in front after 10 minutes thanks to Cornelia Kapocs' superb strike before Taylor Hinds' own goal drew the sides level.

A sublime free-kick from Hobinger put Liverpool back in front, but it seemed like the spoils would be shared after Hunt's late effort.

Hobinger's second goal in the closing stages from the spot gave Matt Beard's side a much-needed win, while Tottenham fell to their first WSL defeat.

"We showed immense character today and I'm really proud of them," said Beard after the match.

"We were always in front but I think when they peg you back, to get obviously back in front again was important.

"I think two set-pieces, two great finishes from Marie, especially the free-kick. It was an entertaining game for the neutral. I'm just glad we walked away with three points."

On the back of successive draws, Liverpool started the game brightly and soon had their reward.

Rebecca Spencer's goalkick was straight at Kapocs, making her first start for the club since joining from Linkoping in the summer, and she took a touch before lobbing the ball over goalkeeper Spencer from 25 yards.

Hinds gave Tottenham hope as she turned the ball into her own net with an outstretched boot from Jessica Naz's cross, leaving Liverpool boss Beard holding his head in his hands.

Hobinger's free-kick from the edge of the area was over the wall and past the despairing dive of Spencer into the top-left corner.

Hunt scored from close range before Hobinger's penalty decided the five-goal thriller, before Rachael Laws produced a vital save to deny Naz from an angle.

"We had to adjust our shape in the first half and then we adjusted again in the second half," added Beard.

"We could've been out of sight first half, let's be honest but we weren't and when you don't take your chances, it allows Tottenham to stay in the game."

Liverpool are now undefeated in their past seven WSL games - their best run in the competition since 2013 - and have scored in all three this season.

Despite the win, there was concern when midfielder Sofie Lundgaard appeared to sustain a serious injury in the first half when she collided with Amanda Nilden and had to be helped off the pitch.

"I thought we were in complete control of the game and Sofie's injury, looking back at it now, probably had a big impact on us."

Rodgers suffers 'low ankle sprain'

New York Jets 17-23 Minnesota Vikings

Mike White

BBC Radio Humberside sports editor

Aaron Rodgers was banged up again today, and admitted after the game that he's picked up an injury.

“I’m definitely banged up, got my foot caught in the tackle there…it’s a low ankle sprain," said Rodgers.

That could potentially be bad news for the New York Jets as they face another tough test against the Buffalo Bills next week.

Get Involved - Are the Jets good enough?

New York Jets 17-23 Minnesota Vikings

Aaron Rodgers is 2-3 after five games, which is not quite what he would have hoped for in his return from injury with a roster stacked with elite talent on both sides of the ball.

One defeat came at the San Francisco 49ers on opening weekend, one came here against the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings with the real bad one being the home loss to the Denver Broncos last week.

They had some good moment today but overall the Vikings were a step ahead - so does this Jets squad have enough in it to give Rodgers a fairytale Super Bowl run?

Thumbs time...

Vikings lap of honour

New York Jets 17-23 Minnesota Vikings

Some Vikings players have come back out onto the field to celebrate, Camryn Bynum and Akayleb Evans among them, and they're doing a lap of honour with still plenty of purple shirts still left in the crowd.

They group dance about in midfield, take a celebratory phot and then bounce around celebrating with the fans before finally disappearing back inside the stadium again.

Fair to say they enjoyed that one.

Defence wins championships

New York Jets 17-23 Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings once had such a fearsome defence they were known as the 'Purple People Eaters' - well, this defence is not there yet, but they're pretty good.

They restricted Aaron Rodgers to 244 yards passing, intercepted him three times including for just the fifth pick six of his career.

Rodgers was hit seven times and definitely struggled, and crucially, just when he was looking to win it, that decisive interception sealed the game.

They say defence wins championships, and Minnesota seem to have one that could well do the job.

As it stands

Here's how the table looks after this weekend's games.

Manchester City took advantage of Chelsea's postponed fixture against Manchester United to claim top spot, while Arsenal lost ground after a goalless draw at home to Everton.

Brighton remain in third after their impressive win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Top flight debutants Crystal Palace are the big movers in the bottom half of the table after their maiden WSL win away at Leicester.

Everton remain bottom but are on the board after claiming an impressive point away at Emirates Stadium.

'I'm not going to blame the referee'

FT: Tottenham 2-3 Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Robert Vilahamn on conceding a late penalty: "It's really hard to be a referee and I know that. The free-kick before that, I obviously will always have a feeling of 'is this really a penalty? Is it really a free-kick?' It feels like it's a very, very soft one. I haven't seen it afterwards. On the other hand, it's so hard to be aref and I'm not going to come down here and blame them. I'm just going to learn from the level we have and make sure we perform better because it is tough to be a ref."

On the message at full-time: "In the second half, we showed some really good character. We were giving the fight and we were almost going for it and sometimes when you lose, you cannot let the emotions take over. You can't say everything is bad, you have to stick together and make sure we take steps from this as well. Of course, you need to have emotions. You need to be down or sad or angry today, but it's important that we look at it with not too many emotions because if you are going to analyse a game, you need to be quite calm and reflect on the right stuff. We are going to take steps, we are going to bounce back. A tough game next week, but it is going to be a fun game.

'It is always tough to lose in the final minutes'

FT: Tottenham 2-3 Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Robert Vilahamn: "It's always tough to lose in the last minutes. The performance in the first half was not great but in the second half, we took the fight to them. We had some really good chances as well. We came back two times and were coming for the 3-2 and then they get a penalty and score to make it 3-2. It's tough but it's a part of the game. Sometimes, to feel is to feel you win, but also, it's tough right now.

On changes in the second half: "We changed a little bit in the midfield and played with one six and two 10s to make sure we made some more problems for them because we couldn't really nail the build-up. In the first half, they pressed really good, Liverpool. Then, when we get more players higher up and we can win the ball back quickly if we didn't succeed. The character was also much better in the second half to realise the first half was not good enough. The first half from Liverpool was really physical. They had different tempos at different times. We needed to go back and be present and make sure we did it and I think in the second half, the players really did that. I think we had them, but then, you need to nail it as well and unfortunately, they got an extra chance and scored.

"We had it from the beginning that we would take the fight first and then play, but that goal interrupted that because they got the goal quite early, quite easily. We needed to get back and we couldn't really find the momentum of that because of the rhythm of the game. On the other hand, sometimes it takes a while before we get everyone on the same page, but we were trying in the first half. We were trying but we couldn't really nail it. Great stuff in the second half, but unfortunately, a loss."

'I'm really proud of the team'

FT: Tottenham 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Matt Beard: "It reminded me a bit of the Chelsea game last year, the 4-3. I thought we were in complete control of the game and Sophie’s injury, looking back at it now, probably had a big impact on us.

"We had to adjust our shape in the first half and then we adjusted again in the second half. I’m just really proud of the girls because we showed immense character today. We’ve scored all five goals today but I’ve just said to them at the end there, we’re all putting our bodies on the line and unfortunately, some ricochet in, some don’t’ that was the style of today. We could’ve been out of sight first half, let’s be honest but we weren’t and when you don’t take your chances, it allows Tottenham to stay in the game. We showed immense character today and I’m really proud of them.

"We were always in front but I think when they peg you back, to get obviously back in front again was important. I think two set-pieces, two great finishes from Marie, especially the free-kick. It was an entertaining game for the neutral. I’m just glad we walked away with three points."

On Marie-Therese Höbinger's two goals: "I think you could see the girls at half-time were visibly upset with the Sofie Lundgaard situation. I know [Hobinger] put herself under pressure to win the game for [Lundgaard] at half-time. She’s a fantastic player, great character, she’s a technician. We see that every day in training. I’m delighted for her and I thought she was outstanding today."

'A really challenging period'

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall on five games in two weeks, including Wednesday's Champions League group match at Bayern Munich: "We have a really quick turnaround time and it's a really challenging period for us.

"But we simply have to do our very best. All the games that are coming up - different challenges, different questions and we need to be really good.

"We see ourselves as a Champions League club so that's really important. I hope it's not going to be different [against Bayern Munich] since we got the better of them in the quarter-finals two years ago.

"Bayern Munich are a really good team with a really good coach. I think they have been building well the last couple of seasons. It's one of the tougher opponents we could play in Europe. We really need to have a strong performance if we are going to get anything out of it."

'I was very nervous, but I knew we were going to win'

FT: Tottenham 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool's Marie-Therese Höbinger after scoring two goals: "It was crazy. It was very hard, very focussed but we really wanted to get those three points and I’m just glad we got the win."

On scoring a free-kick: "I knew where I went to place it straight away when I saw the position and then I thought ‘you’re going to do it, you’re going to do it. Just put it over their heads.’ It worked quite well.

"We do practice shooting a lot. That’s the most fun part as well. I really enjoyed doing that at the coach always help with building a wall and helping with different techniques. We do it a lot."

On her stoppage time penalty: "I was very nervous to be honest but I always knew we were going to win this game. I knew I wanted to do it and I was just so sure that that is the moment that’s going to bring us the three points. I knew where I wanted to place it and then I just went 100 percent."

On manager Matt Beard calling her a "legend": "No, he is the legend."
