Brighton 2-2 Tottenham: What Thomas Frank said

Brighton 2-2 Tottenham: What Thomas Frank said - BBC
Description

Thomas Frank spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Tottenham's draw against Brighton: "Our start to the game was fantastic. We are coming away from home against a very good team and we are completely dominating it. And then out of nothing, without even a first sniff of danger, they are one on one with our keeper.

"So fair play to Brighton. We could have done better in that situation. And then the second goal we concede Vic has to do better, he knows and agrees.

"But the mentality that we showed today, I was so impressed with. The mentality to stay in the game, to keep going, to keep pushing and come back and get a well deserved 2-2.

"I actually think that overall if there should have been a winner, it should have been us. So many crosses into the box, near chances, missed opportunities. We were physically strong and mentally strong, and that is so important if you want to achieve something."

"Kudus was probably our man of the match. He was so dangerous. He owned that right hand side. The own goal he got an assist for, he made the run across to put them in doubt.

"I think this is our best performance of the season. Overall it was very good in many phases. Yes we gave the two goals away but one was good by Brighton and the other was a mistake, apart from that we controlled it and were very good in every phase of the game."

Did you know?

Tottenham have won just one of their last nine Premier League games that have come after playing in Europe in midweek (W3 L5), with that sole victory coming against Burnley on MD1 this season following the UEFA Super Cup.

Analysis: Spurs battle back, but sloppy in defence - BBC
Description

This has been a fine start for new coach Thomas Frank, with Tottenham having lost just once so far this season under the former Brentford boss.

That good form has been built on a platform of a strong defence, with Spurs having conceded just once prior to the trip to Brighton.

It therefore made their start to this game all the more perplexing, as their high line was caught out by the home side's first proper attack when Yankuba Minteh charged through to round the goalkeeper and score.

The defending was not much better for Brighton's second either, as Guglielmo Vicario should have perhaps done better than to just get a hand to Yasin Ayari's shot.

Despite that, Tottenham showed good character to battle back and take something from the game, although they will perhaps feel a little disappointed they did not claim all three points given their dominance and number of chances they have created.

The one area of concern under Frank is that a generally tighter defence has come at the cost of their attack - they finished this game with 11 shots on goal but just three on target.

Post

Burnley 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Two defeats for Ange Postecoglou during his short time at Nottingham Forest.

He's got just over 15 minutes to secure a first win.

'Wolves all at sea'

Wolves 1-3 Leeds

Dion Dublin

Former Aston Villa and Man Utd striker on Final Score

Wolves look a little bit all over the place. They set up in a structure but it all goes to pot out of possession. There is no togetherness, no partnerships working, they are all at sea.

Post

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham

Mohammed Kudus powers down the right side and finds the run of Xavi Simons on the edge of the box but he drags his shot wide.

Should be hitting the target there.

'Phenomenal finish'

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Shay Given

Former Newcastle and Man City keeper on Final Score

It's a blur past Areola in goal. On his weaker right foot it's a fantastic strike from Mitchell. He peels away from the traffic and it's a phenomenal finish.

'Sizzler'

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Mark Scott

BBC Final Score commentator at London Stadium

An absolute sizzler from Mitchell of all people has put Palace back in front. Again another cross West Ham haven't dealt with.

Post

Burnley 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Forest are still going with trying to dominate the ball but they're not creating many chances. I'd even go as far to say the Burnley defence is comfortable right now.

GREAT SAVE!

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham

Xavi Simons has made a huge difference already since coming on as he comes inside from the left and looks to bend one into the far corner but Bart Verbruggen gets a big hand to it.

GOAL - West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Tyrick Mitchell (68 mins)

Crystal Palace re-take the lead against the run of play, and what a finish it is!

Wing-back Tyrick Mitchell finds himself unmarked in the box when a cross is headed his way, and he first time volleys the ball on the swivel into the roof of the net. Alphonse Areola barely had time to react. Incredible finish!

Post

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham

I have no idea how Spurs are behind here but they are and they're running out time to find an equaliser.

CLOSE!

West Ham 1-1 Crystal Palace

Lucas Paqueta stands up a teasing ball to the back post, but Kyle Walker-Peters can only head wide after beating his marker to the ball. Good chance that!

Post

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham

Spurs come forward again as Xavi Simons picks the ball up centrally and slides a nice ball through the gap for Richarlison but Lucas Bergvall takes it off his toes.

Post

Burnley 1-1 Nottingham Forest

I've been impressed by Burnley today. They've worked the ball well and showed a lot of intent in attack.

They also look the most likely to find a winning goal.

Post

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham

Xavi Simons is involved for the first time as the ball drops to him on the edge of the box and he flashes an effort wide.

Post

West Ham 1-1 Crystal Palace

Lucas Paqueta sees his header at the back post cleared off the line!

The home side are really pushing now, though they still look vulnerable whenever Crystal Palace get forward.

Post

Burnley 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Nick Mashiter

BBC Sport football news reporter at Turf Moor

The towels are out to dry the ball for throw ins as the rain keeps hammering down at Turf Moor.

The game is evenly balanced now, though Burnley have perhaps edged the second half so far.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Tottenham Hotspur: Premier League preview, team news, stats & head-to-head - BBC
Description

Brighton completed a Premier League double over Tottenham Hotspur last season – the only time they have ever won back-to-back league meetings with Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur have lost away to Brighton in both of the last two league seasons but have never before lost three successive visits.

Brighton and Hove Albion have lost just one of their last 10 home Premier League matches (W6 D3), and are unbeaten in six at the Amex (W3 D3) since a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in April.

Tottenham have won both their away league games so far this season by an aggregate score of 5-0; not since November 2020 under José Mourinho have they won three consecutive Premier League matches on the road (run of four).

Brighton have the lowest PPDA in the Premier League this season (9.5), as well as recording the most shots following high turnovers, attempting eight from their 31 so far.

Only two sides have attempted more crosses in the Premier League this season than Tottenham (89), with their three goals from crosses the most of any side in 2025-26.

Only Chelsea (14) and Manchester City (12) have created more big chances in the Premier League this season than Brighton (10), with the Seagulls scoring four of those opportunities; the eighth-best conversion rate.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank lost his first two Premier League meetings with Brighton in the 2021-22 season, but he’s only lost one of his last six against the Seagulls (W2 D3), all while manager of Brentford.

Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has the highest take-on success rate among players with 10+ attempted in the Premier League this season (65% - 13/20), while only Oscar Bobb (10) has recorded more take-ons in the opposition’s box than Minteh’s six.

Brighton vs Tottenham predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game

Brighton vs Tottenham predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game - BBC
Description

I was at Tottenham's Champions League win over Villarreal on Tuesday night for BBC Radio 5 Live, and they were a little bit flat. They only had one shot on target all night and only scored thanks to an own goal.

Spurs have started the season in a similar way to Liverpool, in that they haven't always played that well but most of the time they have still got a result - apart from the defeat by Bournemouth.

What they have in their favour is two incredible centre-halves in Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, who were both phenomenal against Villarreal. Thomas Frank just has to hope he can keep them fit.

Brighton are inconsistent, but they are brave and they have some dangerous attacking players. They will take the game to Spurs and my gut feeling is they will take the win too.

Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Tottenham 1-5 Man City: Grace Clinton scores and assists on debut against old side

Tottenham 1-5 Man City: Grace Clinton scores and assists on debut against old side - BBC
Description

Grace Clinton claimed a goal and an assist on her Manchester City debut as they cruised past Tottenham at Brisbane Road.

It was the first time since March 2024 the Blues have registered successive Women's Super League wins as they ruthlessly ended their hosts' unbeaten start to the campaign.

After a nervy opening quarter of an hour, Andree Jeglertz's side suffered a blow as England forward Lauren Hemp limped off in the 22nd minute.

The two-time Euros winner appeared to roll her ankle making a tackle on Jessica Naz, before watching the second half from the bench in a protective boot.

However, the visitors quickly rallied, scoring three goals in 20 minutes to seize control of the contest.

First Aoba Fujino popped up on the edge of the box to rifle a shot into the top corner, adding the final flourish to a sweeping team move.

Facing an onslaught of City pressure, Tottenham collapsed, as Vivianne Miedema glanced home a corner to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute, before Kerstin Casparij headed the third two minutes before half-time.

Having been stunned into submission in the first half, Spurs started the second brightly before being pushed back once again by the visitors, led by Hemp's replacement Kerolin Nicoli.

Khadija Shaw had the chance to add to her 12-goal career tally against the hosts after defender Clare Hunt sent Fujino sprawling in the box. Yet the City striker was denied by a strong stop from Spurs keeper Lize Kop.

Clinton, a signing on deadline day from Manchester United, joined the action in the 65th minute and made an instant impact.

The England midfielder came on to cheers from both sets of fans, having spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Tottenham. But she upset her old club when she slid home the fourth goal with 10 minutes to go.

Olivia Holdt smashed home a Spurs consolation in the 87th minute, before Clinton made another key contribution, turning provider for Laura Coombs to curl into the far corner for the fifth City goal in stoppage time.

Spurs boss Martin Ho was captured shaking his head in disbelief in the home dugout during the first half.

Having allowed just one shot on target across their first two league games, a 1-0 win against West Ham and 2-0 victory at Everton, his side were helpless at times against their aggressive, attack-minded opponents.

Ho's mood turned to frustration and anger as a once solid defence crumbled.

That will worry Ho, a coach renowned for his defensive acumen, and who had made a good start following his summer appointment.

Back-to-back clean sheets before this thrashing had shown a massive improvement for a side that conceded the second-highest number of goals (44) in the WSL last term.

Spurs struggled to deal with both City's frontline as well as creating chances of their own. Holdt's late strike will provide scant consolation and was just one of six shots in the game.

Ho will want an improvement at both ends when his side face Aston Villa in the League Cup in midweek.

Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham Hotspur: UEFA Champions League stats & head-to-head

Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham Hotspur: UEFA Champions League stats & head-to-head - BBC
Description

The only previous meetings between Bodø/Glimt and Tottenham came in May of this year, with the English side winning home (3-1) and away (2-0) in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, before going on to lift the trophy (1-0 v Manchester United in the final).

Bodø/Glimt have lost 100% of their games against English sides in major European competition (5/5); their worst losing record against sides from a single nation. All of those defeats have come in the UEFA Europa League since the 2022-23 campaign.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win away to Bodø/Glimt in May ended a five-game winning streak at home for the Norwegian side in Europe. They haven’t lost back-to-back home games in European competition since November 2022, with the first of those two defeats also coming against a side from North London (0-1 v Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League).

Tottenham have won three of their last four away games in major European competition (L1), including the last two. The last time they won three in a row away from home was in November 2013 (3), all of which were 2-0 wins in the UEFA Europa League.

Bodø/Glimt came from two goals down to avoid defeat against Slavia Prague in their very first UEFA Champions League match, the first time they’ve ever recovered a two-goal deficit in a major European game. They were the first Norwegian side to come back from two goals down in a UEFA Champions League match since Molde won 3-2 against Olympiakos in 1999.

Thomas Frank could become the first Tottenham manager to win his first two UEFA Champions League games in charge, with none of the previous four managing to do so (W1 D1 Harry Redknapp, W1 L1 Mauricio Pochettino, W1 L1 José Mourinho and W1 L1 Antonio Conte).

Bodø/Glimt faced 26 shots on MD1 against Slavia Prague, meaning they’ve faced 20+ shots in four of their last six major European matches, though all of these have been in away games (27.5 per game on average). In comparison, in their last four home European games they’ve faced 42 shots (10.5 on average).

Mohammed Kudus made eight dribbles on his UEFA Champions League debut for Tottenham against Villarreal, the most by a Spurs player in a game in the competition since March 2020 (Giovani Lo Celso with 11 and Erik Lamela with 8 vs RB Leipzig). Only PSV’s Sergiño Dest (17) and Sporting’s Trincão (10) made more dribbles on MD1 this season.

Spurs benefitted from Luiz Júnior’s own goal for Villarreal in their 1-0 victory on MD1, the first time they’ve ever won a major European match 1-0 thanks to an own goal. It was also the second earliest match-winning own goal in a UEFA Champions League match.

Excluding own goals, five of Bodø/Glimt’s last 11 major European goals have been scored by substitutes. Sondre Fet and Daniel Bassi scored as a sub in the 2-2 draw against Slavia Prague, with Bodø/Glimt the first side to have two subs score in their first ever match in the UEFA Champions League.
