Man City 0-2 Tottenham: James Trafford and Ederson decision to make for Guardiola

'Is Trafford really top drawer?' - Guardiola's keeper conundrum - BBC
Description

"It's happened again, it's happened again, Manchester City, it's happened again."

That was the chant bellowed from the Etihad Stadium's away end at full-time after City were again humbled at home by Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs were scintillating on their visit here last November and inflicted a 4-0 thrashing, but they were given a helping hand on this occasion and it was one they gleefully accepted.

This time it was 2-0. The visiting Spurs contingent, who have suffered as targets of the "it's happened again" jibe in the past, made sure to enjoy the moment.

Deploying a high defensive line cost Pep Guardiola's City side the opening goal, while goalkeeper James Trafford did not cover himself in glory for the second in an overall jittery performance on his home debut.

Ederson has been City's undisputed number one for eight years, but the Brazilian watched on from the bench after missing the Wolves game through illness last weekend amid heavy links with a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

What is clear is that Guardiola has a big long-term decision to make about the goalkeeper role.

"James made a good first game and I decided to continue [with him]," said Guardiola, explaining Trafford's selection.

"The keeper is a special position, of course, to have more consistency in the goal.

"When I take decisions in the first part of the season for all the players who play one or two games, everyone thinks 'OK this is the starting line-up, these are the players who are going to play', but with these amount of games, everyone will play.

"It was just today I decided that."

Trafford was in celebratory mood earlier in the week when he collected the PFA's Championship player of the year award at the Opera House in Manchester city centre, reward for his performances in the second tier for Burnley.

The 22-year-old kept 29 clean sheets in the league last season for the Clarets, and after joining City he was quickly on song, as Guardiola pointed out, in the opening win at Wolves.

But this was a different story, a difficult first showing in a City shirt at Etihad Stadium.

Trafford came through the City ranks and rejoined the club for £27m from Burnley this summer having not made a senior appearance in his first spell.

He will have been dreaming of playing Premier League football for City at the Etihad, but it turned into an uncomfortable afternoon, Trafford slipping away from centre stage at the final whistle with songs from joyful Spurs fans ringing in his ears.

Guardiola has turned to youth in his rebuild.

Saturday's team, with an average age of 24 years and 326 days, was the youngest starting XI named by the Spaniard in the Premier League and they have plenty to learn.

Tottenham's Richarlison pressed relentlessly all game and forced Trafford into conceding a corner, while the keeper was lucky not to be dismissed for a collision on the edge of the box with Spurs winger Mohammed Kudus.

And at 1-0 behind, with the crowd beginning to get anxious, those shaky moments then turned into a calamity as Trafford played a loose pass inside the area to Ruben Dias, who failed to control, and Joao Palhinha eventually smashed in.

City failed to recover, slipping to defeat in their first home game of the campaign.

"City were well beaten today," former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "I've got to say I'm not sure about the goalkeeper situation.

"Is James Trafford really top drawer? If it's a choice between Trafford and Ederson, I'm going with Ederson.

"It was poor for the goal, a weak pass into Dias, not even passing on to the right side, and that absolutely killed them with Spurs going in 2-0 at half-time."

Paris St-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma is rumoured to be of interest to City and sources have not totally ruled out a move for the Italian, but it would need Ederson to move on.

Guardiola, though, now has a decision to make as to whether he sticks with Trafford, brings Ederson back into the fold, or sells the Brazilian and signs Donnarumma.

The manager seems unsure himself, having said before the start of the season that Ederson was his number one, but then on Friday saying he will pick "who trains good".

Trafford was given the nod, but the decision raises more questions than answers.

Similar to counterpart Ruben Amorim across the city, the managers of both Manchester clubs each have a goalkeeping conundrum to deal with if they are to claw their way back to the top.

"There was a lot of talk after week one that this Man City team were back," former Everton midfielder Leon Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "I think this lets everybody take a step back and reassess that.

"They were way off the level that Spurs were at today."

James Trafford: Why did Man City goalkeeper avoid red card for challenge on Mohammed Kudus?

James Trafford: Why did Man City goalkeeper avoid red card for challenge on Mohammed Kudus? - BBC
Description

Goalkeeper James Trafford had a first half to forget on his Manchester City home debut against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.

Thomas Frank's side took a two-goal lead into half-time after goals from winger Brennan Johnson and midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Trafford, 22, was culpable for Spurs' second after he gave the ball away in his own box, with Pape Matar Sarr pinching possession from the pass out before Palhinha fired home.

But many felt the England U21 goalkeeper was lucky to still be on the pitch at that point.

Moments after Spurs took a 1-0 lead, Trafford sprinted out of his box as winger Mohammed Kudus raced in on goal.

After Kudus controlled with his chest, Trafford appeared to handle the ball outside his 18-yard box and caught the Ghana international high on the chest with his knee.

Kudus laid injured on the pitch as City regained possession but a free-kick was not awarded to Spurs and Trafford went unpunished.

While the challenge on Kudus was debateable, it was the use of Trafford's arm outside the box that had many people questioning whether the goalkeeper should have been sent off.

Firstly, after the referee saw no offence on the field, the incident was not reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee.

While all incidents are looked at in the VAR room, only those deemed worthy of an intervention are reviewed by the on-field referee.

BBC Sport understands that the officials felt there was not a case for the VAR to intervene as Trafford's hands were down by his side and because of the proximity of his body to the incident.

Secondly, a goalkeeper handling the ball outside the box is not an automatic red card.

There are a number of considerations that the referee (or the VAR) must take, such as whether the goalkeeper had denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the distance between the offence and the goal, the direction of play, and the location and number of defenders around the incident.

Man City 0-2 Spurs: Johnson and Palhinha score

Man City 0-2 Spurs: Johnson and Palhinha score - BBC
Description

Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back Premier League victories under new manager Thomas Frank by stunning Manchester City once again at Etihad Stadium.

Spurs came here last November and inflicted a 4-0 humbling of City in a scintillating performance, and they went home once more with all three points courtesy of a resolute defensive display.

They started slowly as Omar Marmoush latched on to Pedro Porro's loose header and squeezed a shot narrowly wide of the far post before seeing a thunderous strike from range pushed away by Guglielmo Vicario.

The Egyptian was lively early on and forced another excellent save from the Spurs goalkeeper after being played through by Erling Haaland.

With their first real threat of the game, Spurs took the lead courtesy of a lightning breakaway as Richarlison's low cross was converted by Brennan Johnson.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but that was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee.

With seven minutes added on in the first half because of an injury to City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Spurs doubled their lead through Joao Palhinha who smashed in after a loose pass from goalkeeper James Trafford inside his own area.

It capped a difficult few minutes for the City keeper who could have been dismissed for a collision on the edge of the box with Mohammed Kudus.

Haaland should have pulled one back before the break but headed over from close range, and the home side were left frustrated in the second period as Tottenham made it two clean sheets from two in the league so far this season.

Tottenham had experienced a bruising week because of a failed pursuit of winger Eberechi Eze, with the Crystal Palace player agreeing terms with Spurs' bitter rivals Arsenal instead.

The travelling supporters made their feelings known towards chairman Daniel Levy from the first whistle with loud chants of "we want Levy out" echoing around the stadium, though they were replaced by "we love you Tottenham" by full-time.

The players who do wear the Spurs shirt responded with another tremendous showing at City's ground, collecting their third victory in their last five visits.

Frank's side beat Burnley convincingly in their opening game and rode their luck as City missed opportunities, but they took full advantage when chances fell their way at the other end.

City were holding a high line and were made to pay as John Stones narrowly kept Richarlison onside, allowing the Brazilian to roll the ball across from the right, and Johnson made no mistake with his finish.

Spurs were pressing with precision and forced Trafford into an error, with the Englishman's risky ball eventually dropping into the path of Palhinha to net his first goal since joining on loan from Bayern Munich.

They could have made it a more handsome scoreline in the second half but Dominic Solanke saw his low drive pushed out by Trafford late on and Wilson Odobert was also denied from the rebound.

City started the season with an eye-catching victory at Wolves but came back down to earth with a bump as they suffered defeat in their first home game of the campaign.

Spurs are Guardiola's bogey side – the Spaniard has now lost a joint-high 10 games against them, the same number of defeats he has suffered as boss against Real Madrid and Liverpool.

They were made to pay for the gilt-edged chances missed by Marmoush and Haaland - the latter coming into the contest with an imperious record of scoring 48 Premier League goals in as many home games for the club.

A 2-0 half-time deficit proved too much for City to turn around, with Spurs defending resolutely and leaving Guardiola considering his options.

The goalkeeping situation will be at the forefront of his mind as Trafford had a jittery game and was at fault for the second, as well as being fortunate not to be dismissed.

With Ederson watching on from the bench after being heavily linked with a move to Galatasaray, Guardiola now has a decision to make with his number one.

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur: Key stats and talking points

Jordan Butler

BBC Sport journalist

Manchester City have made their best start to a Premier League campaign for six years and now face a Tottenham side that also took maximum points on the opening weekend.

City have picked up just one win from their past four home matches against Spurs but Pep Guardiola’s table-toppers were impressive in their 4-0 win at Wolves last weekend.

Tijjani Reijnders stole the show at Molineux with a midfielder masterclass and became only the second player to score and assist on Premier League debut for City after Sergio Aguero.

City’s defensive high line also caught the eye and they limited the home side to three shots on target and an expected goals total of 0.56. Guardiola’s men have kept seven clean sheets since April – the most of any side – and have faced the fewest shots per game of any top-flight side in that time.

Erling Haaland pitched in with two goals and he’s now scored on the Premier League’s opening weekend in all four of his seasons at City. He has amassed 48 goals in 48 home league appearances for the club but only one of those has come against Spurs at the Etihad.

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has made an encouraging start to life in north London with a 3-0 home win over promoted Burnley in his first Premier League game in charge.

Frank has switched to a more direct style of play, with 57% more crosses into the box and 36% more successful long passes compared to last season’s Premier League average under Ange Postecoglou. Going longer at times on Saturday might prove fruitful, particularly if City persist with their extremely high back line.

The Dane led his former side Brentford to a 2-1 victory at the Etihad in November 2022 and could become just the third manager to defeat Pep Guardiola in an away league match with two different clubs. Jose Mourinho was the first with Real Madrid in 2012 and Manchester United six years later and he was followed by Antonio Conte at Chelsea in 2016 and Spurs in 2022.

It’s no secret that Tottenham are in the market for another attacking midfielder to replace the injured James Maddison, with failed bids for Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze widely publicised. However, £55m new boy Mohammed Kudus offered plenty of creative spark with five chances and two assists – no other Premier League player provided more last weekend.

Goals should at least be a guarantee on Saturday. The last four top-flight meetings between these sides at the Etihad have produced 21, with City scoring nine and Spurs 12.

From Aldi to Man City

Man City v Tottenham (12:30 BST)

Shamoon Hafez

BBC Sport football news reporter at Etihad Stadium

It's a crisp day at Etihad Stadium, overcast and dry meaning it's perfect for a game of lunchtime football.

Manchester City are back at home following their impressive opening game thrashing of Wolves last Saturday.

Several players stood out, none more so than summer signing Tijjani Reijnders, who scored and provided an assist in the victory.

The Dutchman is the cover star of today's matchday programme and explains how he went from stacking shelves as a youngster to now wearing a City shirt.

"I didn't get a professional contract when I was 16-17. At one point, my mother came to me and said that I needed to get a job, I was working at a supermarket and I worked there for one year with my friends.

"I was talking to my family about that contrast and from that we concluded that the time at Aldi was very good for me. I have seen both sides of the coin.

"In the end, it was good for me to see life without football and now looking back, it's crazy to see how quickly things can go in life. Now I am here."

Man City vs Tottenham predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game - BBC
Description

Manchester City really impressed me last week and everyone is rightly talking about Tijjani Reijnders. Statman Dave told me to get him into my fantasy team, I didn't take that advice and I should've done. He was brilliant against Wolves.

I do think Tottenham will be a level above under Thomas Frank. It will be interesting to see how they set up after playing a back three in the Super Cup final against Paris St-Germain.

Cristian Romero has signed a new contract for Tottenham - that's a big deal - but how did they not get Eberechi Eze over the line? It had been going on for weeks and now Arsenal have come in and embarrassed them!

Tottenham are still a few players short from properly challenging the really big teams and, in this game, I think City at home will be too strong for them.

Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Eberechi Eze: Tottenham only want players committed to joining club, says Thomas Frank

Eberechi Eze: Tottenham only want players committed to joining club, says Thomas Frank - BBC
Description

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank says the club are not interested in signing players who are not fully committed to them.

Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze is set to join rivals Arsenal in a £67.5m deal, having been poised for a switch to Spurs earlier in the week.

Frank's side had been confident of landing the 27-year-old, but Palace wanted Eze to remain at the club until after Thursday's Europa Conference League match against Fredrikstad.

However, the England international was then left out of Palace's 1-0 home win against the Norwegian club after his boyhood club Arsenal agreed terms.

It is the second blow Spurs have suffered this summer, with Morgan Gibbs-White opting to sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest after Tottenham had activated a release clause in his previous deal.

"In general I don't want any players that don't want to come to this club and wear this fantastic badge," said Frank.

"We don't want them here and I'm sure the fans feel the same."

Tottenham transfers: After missing out on Eberechi Eze, who might club look to now?

'Reeking of desperation?' - who could Spurs turn to next? - BBC
Description

It's been a nightmare few days for Tottenham.

After reaching an agreement to sign England international Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace on Wednesday, they received the news that instead he is set to join bitter north London rivals Arsenal.

Spurs are in the market for a high quality attacking midfield reinforcement. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have both suffered serious injuries while Yves Bissouma missed the opening game of the season in the Premier League.

Earlier this summer, a proposed move for Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest fell through.

Fans have been speaking to BBC Sport to vent their frustration at the situation, with one saying: "Spurs now enter the final few weeks of the transfer window reeking of desperation."

However, another said: "If he's a Gooner we don't want him. Simple."

With less than two weeks of the window left, the options for Spurs in the transfer market are limited, but there are players that could prove to be smart targets should Spurs choose to pursue them.

It will be important to ensure any new midfield signing is physical, a good carrier of the ball over distance, technically secure when deeper, and a strong passer.

BBC Sport looks at Spurs' possible transfer options and speaks to fans to analyse the situation.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank's former midfielder was pivotal to Brentford last season, with two goals and 10 assists. In describing what Frank may be looking for in his attacking midfielder, there isn't a better place to look than the Denmark international.

Damsgaard provided Frank with solutions to their build-up play, frequently dropping into wide areas, deeper. Opposition defenders were unsure whether or not to follow him into these areas and Brentford could get up the pitch more often.

He would help Brentford with smart passes to the wingers or turning on the ball and driving with it himself. When under pressure, he would bounce it back to a defender with a first-time pass, not taking unnecessary risks.

Off the ball, Damsgaard pressed in a front two, intercepting the ball in dangerous situations. His pressing intensity and willingness to defend embodied the culture Frank has tried to instil in his teams throughout his career.

Although slightly on the nose, the well-rounded midfielder would slot into Frank's system at Spurs with ease. The familiarity ensures questions about tactical fit are a non-issue.

At only 25 years old, he combines experience, Premier League know-how and technical and physical quality, allowing him to scale up to a Champions League side.

It is important to contextualise El Khannouss' Premier League performances and statistics, given he played for a poor Leicester side who spent large parts of last season defending deep.

Although he only scored two goals and assisted three times in the league, his performances have caught the eye of teams in the Premier League, most recently being linked to Crystal Palace as a potential Eze replacement.

What stands out immediately is his technical quality. El Khannouss is accomplished with both feet and is often seen playing passes and crosses with either, depending on what flank he has floated towards.

The manner in which he dropped as deep as the defensive midfielders, to improve the Foxes' build-up, is something Frank would appreciate. In these situations, he would carry his team upfield using deceptive feints to create space from opponents pressing him.

Although El Khannouss is an attacking midfielder, he often found himself in wing positions and showcased great crossing quality and high-level ball manipulation.

He has good pace in big spaces but on the ball plays at a slower pace appropriately. His two-footedness provides balance and additional creative solutions alongside left-footed wingers.

The only real question mark in his game is how quickly he gets his shots off. He has a powerful strike of the ball and is excellent on set-pieces but takes time to set up his shot, leading to his strikes being blocked. This makes scoring for El Khannouss more difficult in crowded spaces, but he should be a threat when shooting from distance.

Akliouche, just like Eze, is a natural winger who moves to play more centrally during the game. With five goals and 10 assists in Ligue 1 last season, the Frenchman took a step up, although he underperformed against his expected goals total of 9.3.

Even as a winger, he has a tendency to drop deep. From such areas, he can drive the ball over large distances quickly, showing strength to hold off defenders. His ball manipulation is impressive, often using his studs and ball rolls to confuse defenders.

Against deep defences, the Monaco winger has been seen moving into central midfield positions to find solutions. Here he passes well and can find team-mates at a variety of angles. As a talented passer, he would help to provide balance to Spurs' group of impressive ball carriers.

Despite his on-the-ball quality, he doesn't neglect his off-the-ball work. He tracks back diligently if his team have lost the ball. In attack, he makes good runs behind the opposition's back line.

Frank likes his versatile attackers, particularly those that can play multiple roles. Akliouche provides a different profile down the middle and would work well with Porro on the right flank. This would free Kudus to play centrally too.

Akliouche displays a goal threat greater than the rest of the names in this list. However, he is the most naturally attacking player, playing in a more dominant side compared to Brentford and Leicester.

Like Eze, Dibling is a winger who can play centrally. For Southampton last season, there were games in which he stayed fairly central.

As a winger, Dibling resists pressure well from defenders on his back, getting used to being closely marked in the Premier League with pressure from behind him. He takes this quality with him when playing in midfield.

When starting centrally, he often dropped deep and towards the right side of the pitch to provide his team's defenders with an extra passing option. To find space in these situations, he would fake to run in behind, dragging a midfielder with him, before dropping deep quickly to receive the ball.

If there is the opportunity to turn with the ball, the Englishman does so and impressively avoids being tackled by riding contact well over large distances and having quick feet in small spaces.

He can be less active than others on this list when he doesn't have the ball and prefers to receive the ball to feet, rather than making runs behind a defender. This is almost exclusively done towards the right side of the pitch, given his preference for using his right foot.

At times, Dibling would suit playing down the middle more than on the wing if he were to sign for Spurs.

Down the middle, he is able to showcase his ability to shift the ball and shoot quickly. Out wide, he can be susceptible to not quite getting the right flight on in-swinging crosses from the right flank, a method of chance creation that Frank likes to use.

A selection of fan responses to BBC Sport on Thursday

Brian: Totally embarrassing. Over a week to get Eze signed and still couldn't manage it and Arsenal do it in hours. A kick in the teeth to Spurs fans. We spend so much wasted time on negotiating deals, it's pure frustration!

Bob: Can't say I'm that bothered. He is 27 years old and his career so far has been QPR and Palace. He's not been wanted by anyone like Barca or Real - move on.

Ian: Spurs' mentality is like being a multi-millionaire and driving 25 minutes out of town because the petrol is 5p cheaper. By the time you get home you haven't saved anything, wasted a bunch of time, and everyone else is confused by what you're doing and laughing at you.

Andre: Eze is a fantastic player and would strengthen any team he plays for. But, we can't look back. He isn't a Spurs player so let's not cry about him. Onwards and upwards!

Christopher: Can't help but feel that Ange would've sounded Eze out and identified if his heart was in joining THFC or if he was stringing them along. If anything, it would have prevented this song and dance from playing out at Levy's Tottenham.

Anthony: Completely get it from Eze's perspective, it's his boyhood club. For me, it's another case of Levy and co. taking far too long to wrap something up. Realistically this only reportedly happened because of Havertz's injury, but in football you should never take anything for granted. Not sure where to go now, put the extra funds towards Savinho and find another 10 quick.

Bob: If he's a Gooner we don't want him. Simple.

Mark: For once I don't think we can blame Levy for dragging his heels on this outcome. I don't think Eze ever wanted to sign for us, all we did was set it up for Arsenal to step in. Fair play to their buying team and no doubt our smug North London neighbours will be letting us know how good they feel.

Description

Spurs considered including Richarlison in Eze deal

One of the options discussed by Spurs in their pursuit of Eberechi Eze was a cash-plus-player deal.

That player was Richarlison.

The Brazilian starred for Spurs in their first Premier League game on Saturday, scoring twice in their 3-0 win over Burnley - including an incredible acrobatic volley.

I wonder how he'll be feeling about the whole situation.

Willian, Dybala, Gibbs-White...Another lost signature for Tottenham

Another missed opportunity for Spurs. How many times have we seen that happen?

In 2001, Sol Campbell controversially left Spurs to go to Arsenal on a free transfer.

In 2013, they saw their move for Willian hijacked by Chelsea at the last minute. The Brazilian had even completed a medical at Spurs ahead of a proposed £30m move.

In 2018, Tottenham made a £25m bid for Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish during the summer but were unable to conclude a deal.

In 2019, they missed out on Paulo Dybala after Juventus decided not to sell the Argentine, and with image rights reported to be one of the issues restricting the sale

This summer, Spurs were prepared to trigger the £60m release clause on Morgan Gibbs-White's Nottingham Forest contract before the attacking midfielder signed a new three-year contract at the City Ground.

The list goes on. And now Eberechi Eze's name can be added.

How the Eze saga unfolded on Wednesday

Reports surface that Eberechi Eze's move to Tottenham Hotspur is close to completion

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz suffers a knee injury that will keep him out of action for a period of time

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirms that Eze will start in Palace's Conference League play-off game against Fredrikstad on Thursday

Multiple reports suggest striker Richarlison could be involved in Spurs' deal for the England forward

Arsenal beat Tottenham to the punch and agree a deal worth up to £68m for Eze

Havertz suffers knee injury

The news last night that Arsenal had agreed a deal for Eberechi Eze followed news from earlier on Wednesday that Kai Havertz had picked up a knee injury and is set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Arsenal forward was not part of the open training session held at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and the injury is being assessed by the medical department.

The club are waiting for the injury to settle down, so the length of time that the forward could be ruled out is not clear at the moment.

'Not a hijacking at all'

The news might have come as a nasty surprise to Tottenham fans last night but according to the Independent, Arsenal have been quietly chipping away at a deal for Eberechi Eze for quite some time.

The Independent reports, external that Arsenal had actually struck the principles of an agreement with Palace as early as the morning of Sunday, 10 August.

But in the 11 days since then, the Gunners played down their interest in Eze, with it looking like they wanted to sell another player and they were favouring a left winger.

Apparently even Eze thought as recently as Saturday that a deal with Arsenal wasn't going to go through.

One of the moments of the transfer window for Arsenal

Alex Howell

BBC Sport Arsenal reporter

If Arsenal beat their rivals Tottenham to complete the signing of Eze, there is little doubt it would be one of the standout moments of the transfer window.

It's certainly a moment their fans will revel in.

Spurs would have thought they had their man almost signed and sealed, but things can change quickly in football.

Arsenal had been actively looking at options in the market and have been monitoring Eze for a long time.

With Ethan Nwaneri signing a new deal and the signing of Noni Madueke adding to the options provided by Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, signing another forward was not a pressing need.

However, Kai Havertz's knee injury has changed things, and although the Gunners do not yet know how long the German faces out of action, a reinforcement was needed.

So, Eberechi Eze will be choosing to wear the cannon instead of the cockerel on his chest come the end of the transfer window.

We want to hear from you about the whole situation.

Spurs fans, how are you feeling about your north London rivals hijacking the deal?

And to the Arsenal supporters, what would be sweeter? Adding the brilliant Eze to your squad or getting one over on Tottenham?

I feel like I might already know the answer to that one, but let me know anyway!
