'Like being with a rock star' - departing Son's 10 years at Spurs - BBC
Description

"I'm not sure we'll see another Sonny at Tottenham," Kevin Wimmer, Son Heung-min's close friend and former Spurs team-mate, tells BBC Sport.

"To be at one club - especially one as big as Spurs - for 10 years in this day and age is a very special achievement."

After 454 appearances and 173 goals, Son is moving to pastures new a decade after Mauricio Pochettino brought him to north London from Bayer Leverkusen.

The South Korea forward was the most expensive Asian signing in the Premier League when the then 23-year-old arrived in 2015 in a deal reportedly worth £22.5m.

Now aged 33, Son leaves three months after writing his name in Spurs folklore by helping the team to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final to end the club's 17-year wait for a major trophy.

"We love players who give so much to this club," Micky Hazard, an FA Cup (1982) and Uefa Cup (1984) winner with Spurs, says.

"Sonny will always be worshipped in these parts."

On the pitch, Son will be remembered by Spurs fans for his searing pace and outstanding moments like his wonderful solo goal in 2019, when Tottenham's number seven was too quick for Burnley as he ran all the way from the edge of his own penalty area, dodging tackle after tackle, before slotting past Nick Pope.

Off it, he will be remembered by team-mates for his incredible gestures.

Son paid the bill when he took the team out for a Korean barbecue during Tottenham's pre-season tour of South Korea in 2022 before giving the whole travelling party personal gifts to mark their visit to his home country.

"When he first arrived, I didn't know much about him," Hazard tells BBC Sport.

"Ten years on, he's leaving a Spurs legend."

Son had already rejected Pochettino before joining the Argentine at Tottenham and embarking on a 10-year love affair with Spurs.

In 2013, Pochettino had just taken charge of Southampton when he met with the then 20-year-old - who was already making a name for himself with Hamburg - his father, Son Woong-jung, and his agent.

Pochettino tried to convince Son that Saints, then in the Premier League, would be the ideal place to continue his football education, but the player moved to Bayer Leverkusen instead where he spent two years before finally linking up with Pochettino, who had been appointed Spurs boss 15 months earlier.

Yet he struggled to settle in his early days in London and asked to leave, external less than a year into a five-year contract before deciding to stay and fight for his place.

A decade after arriving, Son leaves with a Europa League winners' medal - as well as a sackful of individual prizes, including the 2021-22 Premier League Golden Boot, which he shared with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah after both players scored 23 times, and the Fifa Puskas award (presented to the scorer of the "most beautiful" goal of the calendar year) for that run and finish against Burnley in 2019.

"Everything about that goal is a symbol of how he plays the game," adds Hazard.

There have been crushing disappointments too, like defeat by Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final, and losing to Manchester City in the 2021 EFL Cup final.

In 2019, he apologised for his tackle on Andre Gomes which left the Everton midfielder with a horrific ankle injury and which resulted in the visibly upset Son being sent off.

Yet the individual awards have continued to flow.

Four Premier League player of the month prizes, two-time winner of goal of the month, three-time Tottenham player of the year... the list goes on.

A fierce competitor on the pitch, Spurs supporters have warmed to Son's 'Mr Nice Guy' image off it.

After Tottenham defeated West Ham in the EFL Cup in 2021, a young fan managed to get on the pitch and ran towards the player before being surrounded by stewards.

The boy was being escorted away when Son caught up with him, took off his shirt, and handed it to the youngster.

Son is big news in South Korea.

Actually, that's not quite true. Son is huge news.

"There has been research about who has the best brand value among all South Korean people, and Son is almost always in top three along with top K-pop stars like BTS and Blackpink," adds Sungmo Lee.

"One of the reasons for that is South Korean people regard him as the national treasure and pride of the country."

In South Korea, there are regular television programmes that are simply compilations of Son's best goals and assists, while a Son icon appears above the scoreboard to denote he is playing during live broadcasts of Tottenham matches in the country.

His face beams from giant billboards advertising anything from clothes to ice cream, and Son's picture has also appeared on the side of the capital's buses promoting tourism.

In Son's hometown of Chuncheon, about 50 miles from Seoul and where a football academy has been set up by the player and his family, there is a huge mural in his honour.

England right-back Kyle Walker, who played for Tottenham between 2009-2017, recalls a promotional visit to Seoul with Son soon after Spurs finished runners-up to Premier League champions Chelsea at the end of 2016-17.

Former Austria centre-back Wimmer and Wales defender Ben Davies joined the trip to meet sponsors and a thriving Spurs fanbase, which had grown significantly since Son signed.

"I've never seen anything like it," Walker, who spent eight years in north London before joining Manchester City in 2017, said on his 'You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker' podcast.

"We'd do an appearance and then we'd have to use decoy vehicles to get away because fans would try and stop the traffic. They all wanted to catch a glimpse of Sonny.

"They'd come back to the hotel where we were staying and all night they'd sit outside. It was incredible.

"I've seen it before to a certain degree with Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and David Beckham. But it was nothing compared to Sonny."

Wimmer, who has stayed in touch with Son since leaving Spurs in 2017, likened it to "being in the company of a rock star".

"I was always joking with him about this," he says.

"I said: 'You are the most famous guy in South Korea', but he was like: 'No, no, it's not so special'."

Former Austria defender Wimmer had arrived at White Hart Lane from Cologne in the summer of 2015, three months before Son.

"I knew of him because, like me, he was playing in the Bundesliga," adds Wimmer.

The pair struck up an instant friendship in London.

In their early days at Tottenham, they would often speak German together while they improved their English.

After a win at Southampton in 2016, Son and Wimmer interviewed one another - in English - for Spurs TV.

"Kev, why are you my best friend?" asks Son.

Wimmer replies: "Because you are a wonderful guy, an honest guy. It's always funny with you and I hope we stay together for many more years here."

Within a year, Wimmer had been sold to Stoke for £18m. Son stayed to become a Spurs great.

In the space of two years Spurs have lost Harry Kane - their all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances - and now Son.

Following Kane's departure to Bayern Munich in August 2023, Son stepped up by scoring 17 goals and adding 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances as Spurs finished fifth in 2023-24.

However, Son scored just seven goals and provided nine assists in his 30 Premier League appearances in 2024-25. He also endured an injury-hit end to the season and was restricted to a 67th-minute substitute appearance in the Europa League final.

Four days after beating Manchester United in a European final, great names from Tottenham's past formed a guard of honour for soon-to-depart manager Ange Postecoglou's side before the home game with Brighton on the final day of the season.

Ossie Ardiles, Pat Jennings, Keith Burkinshaw and Martin Chivers were among those who lined up on the pitch - along with Hazard.

"Sonny came up to each and every one of us, shook our hands, and said: 'Now I'm a legend'," adds former Spurs midfielder Hazard.

"Despite everything he achieved in 10 years at Spurs, he still didn't believe he was a legend until he won a trophy. I think there is something special about that, something beautiful. It says so much about his character."

Wimmer, who now plays for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, messaged his friend immediately after the final in Bilbao to congratulate him on helping Spurs win a first major European trophy since 1984.

"Out of hundreds of messages he received that night, Sonny still took time to get back to me," he says. "I was so pleased Sonny was finally able to get his hands on a trophy."

Spurs are supported by 12 million - almost one in four - South Koreans, according to research commissioned by AIA, the Asia-based insurance firm which is the club's shirt-front sponsor.

"Son is a pride of whole nation," says Sungmo Lee.

"He already proved himself to win the Golden Boot in the Premier League, which was regarded as impossible for an Asian player."

Son made front page news in 2020 when he travelled back to his home country for compulsory national service.

The player spent three weeks with the South Korean Military Corps, where he finished among the top five performers.

"It was big news and one of the reasons why Korean people love him even more," adds Sungmo Lee. "The training included firing guns. He got the award for being among the best trainees out of 157 he trained with."

Will Son's departure hit Tottenham's revenue streams?

On matchdays at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, up to 700 Son shirts are sold - the most of any player - because of the increasing number of fans travelling from South Korea to watch their hero in action.

"They tend to be wealthy fans with disposable income," football finance expert Kieran Maguire tells BBC Sport. "They don't just buy one Son shirt, they're coming away with two carrier bags full of stuff with Son's name on the back."

Maguire believes there could be a "small" impact on Tottenham's finances now Son has announced he is leaving.

"While it will be a blow for Spurs fans in terms of memories because Son has been a magnificent player for them, the difference between finishing 16th and 17th in the table (Spurs finished 17th last season) is £3.5m.

"Over the course of the season, that's more important than shirt sales from one player."

So what does the future look like for Son, who is in advanced negotiations with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

"On several occasions, including his interview with the Korean media in 2024, he has said he won't be a football manager and won't be staying in football after his retirement," adds Sungmo Lee.

"He also said, for that reason, he wishes to continue his football career for as long as possible."

Whatever he decides to do when he stops playing, Son's memory will live on at Tottenham and beyond.

"No-one will ever forget Sonny," adds Wimmer.

Son Heung-min: Tottenham captain to leave this summer after 10 years at club - BBC
Description

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min says he will leave the club this summer after 10 years.

The South Korea international joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances.

He was captain when Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in May to clinch their first trophy in 17 years.

The 33-year-old, who is under contract with Spurs until 2026, is in advanced negotiations with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

Son described the decision as "the most difficult one I have made in my career" as he spoke to media alongside new manager Thomas Frank.

"I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English," Son said.

"Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment."

Tottenham are in Seoul as part of their pre-season preparations, with Son set to start and skipper the side against Newcastle in their friendly on Sunday - meaning his final appearance for the club could come in his home country.

Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou as head coach in June, described Son as "a true Spurs legend" and "one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League".

"If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans," Frank said.

"It could be a beautiful ending."

Tottenham also face Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on 13 August, but Son may depart by then.

Joao Palhinha: Tottenham close in on loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder - BBC
Description

Tottenham are closing in on a loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Talks between the clubs are at an advanced stage, with an agreement in principle in place.

An agreement over personal terms is unlikely to pose a problem and the deal is set to carry an option for the 30-year-old to make the transfer permanent.

Palhinha has significant Premier League experience, making 68 top-flight appearances in two years at Fulham before his move to Germany for £42.3m in July 2024.

However, the Portugal international has made just six Bundesliga starts since his move to Bavaria and is keen for a return to England.

Spurs have already made Mathys Tel's loan move from Bayern permanent since the arrival of head coach Thomas Frank, while Mohammed Kudus has been signed from West Ham in a deal worth £55m.

Arsenal-Spurs: What we learned from north London derby in Hong Kong

What we learned as Spurs beat Arsenal in Hong Kong - BBC
Description

Tottenham Hotspur beat Arsenal in the first north London derby outside of the UK thanks to Pape Matar Sarr's excellent long-range chip.

The match, which was played in front of a stadium-record crowd of 49,975, gave a glimpse into what both sets of supporters can expect from their sides this season.

Sarr lobbed the ball over David Raya from near the halfway line in the 45th minute after Spurs won the ball back in midfield.

BBC Sport looks at what we learned from a rare pre-season meeting of these rivals.

Arsenal are known for their threat from set-pieces, scoring from 15 last season, with coach Nicolas Jover one of the most recognisable members of backroom staff in the Premier League.

After Arsenal won their first corner of the match, five players lined up along the 18-yard line - a sign they have been working on some new routines after their goals from corners dropped off towards the end of last season.

However, the Gunners also conceded from 14 set-pieces last season and Tottenham had opportunities to score from their own corners.

Pedro Porro and Mohammed Kudus both hit the post directly from corners, with one of the deliveries somehow staying out of the net after Richarlison attempted to put the rebound in from close range but instead helped it over the bar.

Spurs looked organised defensively when defending set-pieces, and throughout open play, with manager Thomas Frank looking to get his ideas over to his new team before the start of the Premier League season.

There has been a real difference in Arsenal's style and how they have approached games on their pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Gunners scored 17 fewer goals than Liverpool last season and finished 10 points behind the champions in second place.

They struggled to break down teams that defended in low blocks, but against Spurs - and throughout pre-season - Mikel Arteta's side have got the ball forward a lot quicker than they did last season.

Goalkeeper David Raya is kicking the ball long as much as he is playing it short.

Arsenal also seem to be shooting more - they registered 23 shots against AC Milan, 15 against Newcastle and, despite losing, had 16 shots against Tottenham.

Arteta is clearly hoping that getting the ball forward quickly and increasing the number of shots on goal will translate to the extra points they missed last season.

"I am very pleased with what I've seen in most of the things that we've done," said Arteta. "But we miss something in certain moments.

"That preciseness, that moment that unlocks the result, the moment to turn the result our way."

A key part of how this Arsenal team plays is built around the partnership of right-back Ben White, captain and right-sided number eight Martin Odegaard and right winger Bukayo Saka.

All three had lengthy injuries last season and without them in the side regularly, the Arsenal attack struggled to flow.

In the open training session held at the Kai Tak Stadium, the three were practising interchanging passes and runs, ending the drills with a cross into the penalty area which was aimed at new striker Viktor Gyokeres.

White continuously ran on the outside of Saka to either give him the option to pass for the overlapping full-back to run on to and cross, or dribble into the box himself.

Gyokeres was introduced in the 77th minute as supporters got to see the club's new signing in an Arsenal shirt for the first time.

The 27-year-old is a different profile to the other Arsenal forwards - he is an imposing figure and it is hoped inside the club that his goals will fire Arsenal to a trophy.

Gyokeres plays a lot differently to Kai Havertz, for example - he does not look to get involved with the build-up play as much, instead looking to get into the penalty area or on the end of crosses.

Gyokeres had a couple of half chances, one being a header from a corner which came at him from a difficult angle, but he did not get a chance to show why Arsenal decided to spend up to £64m on him.

"I'm really happy to have them here," Arteta said when asked about Gyokeres and defender Cristhian Mosquera, who also made his first appearance.

"I think they are going to add a lot of value. You see straight away the energy and the quality they are going to bring.

"It was a short time but at least that one is over now and when they play against Villarreal (on 6 August), I'm sure it will be different."

Tottenham were under pressure for large parts of the match but when they did attack, their wingers offered a good attacking outlet.

Wilson Odobert and Kudus were always looking to take on their full-back and Kudus hit the post directly from a corner in the first half.

After the match, Frank was asked about the £55m summer signing from West Ham.

"His hold-up play, the way he takes hold of the ball in tricky situations, his one-vs-one skills and his creating opportunities for the team were top class," Frank said.

"On top of that I think he's working extremely hard. There was a recovery run from a set-piece when he was straining all the way back and he won the ball back.

"That's how he can help the team so much. He will make a lot of the fans excited with his offensive actions and he will also help the team defensively."

The decisive moment of the match was Sarr's strike, which went sailing over the head of goalkeeper Raya.

The Arsenal keeper is tasked with getting involved in the build-up of play by Arteta because of his passing ability.

That means that his starting position is often high and leaves him vulnerable if Arsenal lose the ball in midfield.

Raya conceded a similar goal to Crystal Palace last season, when Jean-Philippe Mateta chipped him when he was off of his line in the Premier League last season.

FULL-TIME

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

There's the full-time whistle.

Tottenham get the win thanks to Pape Sarr's long-range strike late in the first half.

The white flags are still waving in the Spurs end, their fans can enjoy this one after a decent showing.

They created some chances first half and were resilient in the second - both will please Thomas Frank.

Arsenal weren't quite at it after the first 10 minutes. Mikel Arteta will want to see much better in the games to come but this was just a 'friendly' after all.

Post

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

Nearly 95 minutes played and Arsenal have a free-kick in a good position on the left.

Martin Odegaard is over it, the centre-back are up... but Spurs scramble it away and break.

Son Heung-min puts a decent ball in from the left but Arsenal have men back to clear.

INJURY TIME

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

We're into six minutes of added time.

Feels excessive for a pre-season friendly but then again, I have been saying it's not really been played like a friendly - at least in that first half.

It has all got very bitty the longer the game has gone on. So many subs is always likely to cause that.

Post

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

Arsenal winger Max Dowman is only 15 but he is seen as a massive talent.

Tottenham clearly think so, they're already doubling up on the teenager, but that doesn't stop him getting a dangerous cross in from the right.

It is dealt with - just about - but it's all Arsenal and has been for the past 10-15 minutes.

Gyokeres on for Arsenal (unofficial) debut

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

The players have just had a cooling break and it looks like there will be a number of changes now.

Defender Cristhian Mosquera, recently signed from Valencia is coming on for Arsenal, as is Max Downman.

But that's not who you want to hear about... Viktor Gyokeres is on for his first Arsenal appearance!

Misfiring Gunners

Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham

Matthew Hobbs

BBC Sport

Arsenal’s decision to spend an initial £54.8m on Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres was underpinned by struggles in front of goal over the last two seasons - particularly after hybrid forward Kai Havertz was ruled out for nearly all of the second half of the campaign through injury.

Arsenal’s underlying attacking numbers show why more goal threat is needed and why they have signed only the third striker of Mikel Arteta’s tenure, after Havertz and Gabriel Jesus - and arguably the first genuine number nine.

The Gunners scored 22 fewer goals in the 2024-25 Premier League in comparison to the previous season, while their tallies of shots and expected goals also dropped dramatically – a combination that could be linked to a lack of movement, presence and precision upfront.

The trend of scoring fewer goals, particularly from open play, extends to the 2022-23 campaign. The Gunners netted 70 times from open play that season. This figure then dropped to 59 in 2023-24 and then 50 in 2024-25.

Does the signing of Gyokeres mean that Arsenal's threat from open play will increase once more, or will Mikel Arteta's side still be reliant on their set-piece threat? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

Tottenham have opened talks with Djed Spence over a new contract.

The defender's current deal does not expire until 2028, but BBC Sport understands Spurs have entered into discussions with Spence's representatives over a new deal.

After arriving from Middlesbrough in 2022, Spence endured a difficult start to his Tottenham career, spending loan spells at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa.

Yet last season, he emerged as an important player for Ange Postecoglou and these developments over a possible contract extension indicates he has a role to play under new manager Thomas Frank.

Spurs teenager Moore set to join Rangers on loan - BBC
Description

Rangers are close to completing a loan deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Mikey Moore.

The 17-year-old is regarded as one of English football's brightest young talents and has decided a move to the Scottish Premiership club will further his development.

The move is subject to a medical and will include an extension to Moore's contract in north London that would allow him to spend the season at Ibrox.

Spurs have explained that Moore is among several players left behind from their pre-season tour in Asia, along with the likes of Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett, to pursue a loan move while the senior side prepare to face Arsenal in Hong Kong on Thursday.

After winning the Europa League last season, captain Son Heung-min joked that he was now a Tottenham "legend."

The South Korea international has spent a decade in north London, making more than 450 appearances across all competitions and scoring a handful of important goals.

But is it finally time for Son to leave? Or has the 33-year-old still got more to offer to the club?

We would like to know your thoughts, so click on 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say...

Son's Spurs future uncertain

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min's future at the club remains unclear.

The forward has just 12 months left on his contract and has reportedly attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and the MLS.

BBC Sport’s senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel reported last month that any exit is likely to be after the Asia trip, with Son's absence likely to risk complications with tour organisers.

The South Korea international is crucial to the commercial appeal of Tottenham's Asia Tour.

After playing Arsenal in Hong Kong on 31 July, they travel to Seoul to face Newcastle United three days later.

What could Watkins offer United?

Tom McCoy

BBC Sport journalist

Manchester United transfer target Ollie Watkins has provided consistent goal threat for Aston Villa since joining from Brentford in 2020, more than justifying his transfer fee of £28m, rising to £33m with add-ons.

The Torquay-born striker has reached double figures in all five of his seasons with Villa and equalled a club record by netting 19 Premier League goals in 2023-24. He has also been available for the vast majority of games, featuring in 184 of 190 top-flight matches.

His principal strengths are pace and movement, traits which have enabled him to register 211 shots on target in the past five Premier League seasons, second only to Mohamed Salah. But while he is a constant source of danger, his finishing statistics have fluctuated over the years.

Watkins enjoyed a real hot streak when scoring 27 times in all competitions in 2023-24, overperforming his expected goals total by 6.2 and netting with 20% of his attempts.

Those figures regressed last season, with the England international underperforming his expected goals total by four and converting 15.3% of his chances. It perhaps didn’t help that during the first half of the campaign he was often replaced by Jhon Duran in the closing stages of games, allowing the Colombian – rather than Watkins – to capitalise when space opened up as opposition defences tired.

Nonetheless, in the Premier League, Watkins missed a league-high 27 ‘big chances’ (as defined by Opta), scoring only a third of such opportunities. That compares to a success rate of approximately 50% for peers such as Salah, Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa.

But while there may be room for improvement in Watkins’ finishing, he has added another string to his bow by becoming a regular creator of goals, assisting a remarkable 27 goals over the past two campaigns.

Aged 29, Watkins may not necessarily offer a long-term option for United but he would be a clear upgrade on their current options – if Villa can be persuaded to sell.

How do Watkins and Sesko compare to Hojlund?

Sophie Brown

BBC Sport

At present Rasmus Hojlund is Manchester United’s first-choice centre-forward but United have been linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins.

While Hojlund scored just four goals in 32 Premier League games last season for United – and has yet to find the net in pre-season – both Sesko and Watkins posted much healthier 2024-25 figures. Sesko scored 13 in 33 top-fight appearances for RB Leipzig and Watkins hitting 16 in 38 for Aston Villa.

When Hojlund signed for United in the summer of 2023, then-United boss Erik ten Hag described him as “a real frontman” but both Watkins and Sesko offer more all-round games. Watkins has an excellent assist record while there is more to 6ft 5in Sesko than just a classic number nine. He is also fast, comfortable receiving the ball to feet with his back to goal or hanging on the shoulder of the last defender and racing onto a through ball, and he can score goals of all types from all sorts of distances. He has outperformed Watkins and Hojlund on several key metrics so far in his elite-level career.

If Ruben Amorim is looking for a player who provides a focal point and can compete in aerial duels, Sesko is also probably a better fit than Watkins, who is six inches shorter than the Slovenian, and whose game is more about movement and runs into space.

United, who have already spent almost £130m on attacking players this summer, are said to feel that the suggested £60m price tag is too high for 29-year-old Watkins, who Villa say they don’t want to sell anyway, but the Red Devils have had a meagre return on the £72m they paid for Hojlund two years ago. Leipzig are believed to have slapped a €100m price (£87m) on 22-year-old Sesko, with Newcastle also interested in the player.

Second half hat-trick against Leverkusen

On a night that saw Xabi Alonso make his return to Anfield in the opposing dugout, it was Diaz who stole the headlines.

It took the home side 61 minutes to break the deadlock but once Diaz found his first he was able to get two more before full time in what was arguably his greatest ever performance in a Liverpool shirt.

Cody Gakpo also got himself on the scoresheet as the Reds ran out four goal winners and put a marker down to the rest of Europe.

Equaliser ends emotional week

Diaz had spent 10 days away from Liverpool after his mother and father were kidnapped by Columbian rebels in his home country.

Whilst his mother was able to get away, his dad remained missing but Diaz returned to Premier League action before he was rescued.

With Liverpool a goal down deep in to stoppage-time against Luton Town, Diaz headed home Harvey Elliot's cross to salvage a point.

He celebrated by lifting his shirt with a message saying "freedom for papa" and issued a statement after the match asking for his fathers immediate release. Four days later he was returned home unharmed.

Super solo effort saves Liverpool

Liverpool found themselves in trouble in just their second game of the 2022/23 season.

With Liverpool already a goal down, Darwin Nunez had been sent off for a headbutt on Joachim Andersen shortly before the hour mark.

But just four minutes after Liverpool lost Nunez, up stepped Diaz.

A mazy run down the left-hand side saw him cut in on to his right foot before lashing the ball past Vicente Guaita to rescue a point for the home side.
