Man United next five fixtures compared to Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham after Bournemouth loss

Manchester United's woes have continued into the holiday season after they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

A week ago it was Manchester derby delight, now Ruben Amorim has been left with more questions than ever from witnessing his team's latest performance. Bossing possession and attempts on goal did not matter as Dean Huijsen nodded a looping header beyond Andre Onana at a set-piece.

With that United flaw exposed once again, Noussair Mazraoui hacked down Justin Kluivert in the penalty area to allow the Dutchman to score a penalty, then Antoine Semenyo wrapped up proceedings with a counter-attack. This final result before Christmas Day leaves the club 13th in the Premier League table, facing an uphill struggle if they are going to catch up to their rivals chasing European football.

Victory for Arsenal on Sunday cemented their place within the top-four, Manchester City continue to fall down the table after losing to Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are due to take on Liverpool this evening.

With that said, MEN Sport takes a look at United's upcoming matches compared to these major rivals...

December 26 vs Wolves (A) at 5.30pm - Premier League

A Boxing Day trip this year takes United to Molineux where they will face Wolverhampton Wanderers. If their own battering was not worrying enough, a switch in manager from Gary O'Neil to Vitor Pereira this week has seen the next opposition claim a 3-0 away victory at Leicester City this afternoon.

December 30 vs Newcastle (H) at 8pm - Premier League

The final match of the calendar year will be against fellow European hopefuls Newcastle United. Alexander Isak will be the danger man full of confidence having just scored a hat-trick against Ipswich Town.

January 5 vs Liverpool (A) at 4.30pm - Premier League

And after the turn of the year, the first fixture of 2025 is against bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield. As things stand they have control of the Premier League, sitting first place this Christmas.

January 12 vs Arsenal (A) at 3pm - FA Cup

As part of their upcoming fixtures, United will enter the FA Cup at the third round, as is customary for Premier League teams. They were given one of the toughest draws possible, facing Arsenal away.

Interestingly, former Gunner Paul Merson has said his old side should 'sacrifice' the fixture.

January 16 vs Southampton (H) at 8pm - Premier League

Returning to Premier League action after that cup foray, Southampton visit Old Trafford. Like Wolves the bottom-placed side too have just switched managers, going from Russell Martin to Ivan Juric.

Arsenal next five fixtures:

December 27 vs Ipswich Town (H) at 8.15pm - Premier League

January 1 vs Brentford (A) at 5.30pm - Premier League

January 4 vs Brighton (A) at 5.30pm - Premier League

January 12 vs Manchester United (H) at 3pm - FA Cup

January 15 vs Tottenham (H) at 8pm - Premier League

Man City next five fixtures:

December 26 vs Everton (H) at 12.30pm - Premier League

December 29 vs Leicester City (A) at 2.30pm - Premier League

January 4 vs West Ham (H) at 3pm - Premier League

January 11 vs Salford City (H) at 5.45pm - FA Cup

January 14 vs Brentford (A) at 7.30pm - Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur next five fixtures:

December 22 vs Liverpool (H) at 4.30pm - Premier League

December 26 vs Nott’m Forest (A) at 3pm - Premier League

December 29 vs Wolves (H) at 3pm - Premier League

January 4 vs Newcastle (H) at 12.30pm - Premier League

January 12 vs Tamworth (A) at 12.30pm - FA Cup

FA release Tottenham statement before Manchester United Carabao Cup quarter

Tottenham have been dealt a major update on one key players' availability for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United. The two sides will meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Thursday evening, with a place in the last-four up grabs.

This past weekend, both teams won away from home with Spurs thumping Southampton 5-0 after United beat Manchester City in dramatic fashion courtesy of two goals in the final stages, from captain Bruno Fernandes and player-of-the-match Amad at the Etihad Stadium.

Ruben Amorim made a number of bold decisions for that Manchester derby, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho dropped from the matchday squad and Mason Mount included in their starting XI. Unfortunately for the latter, he lasted just 14 minutes before being replaced by Kobbie Mainoo due to injury.

On the topic of Mount's new issue, injury problems may prove key in deciding the winner with Spurs' potential list of absentees far bigger. For United, Luke Shaw is expected to be the only player joining Mount in being unavailable while Ange Postecoglou could be without up to nine players.

Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have already been ruled out of the match with Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence both doubts. Postecoglou was hoping for a major return to arrive just in time for the tie, but there is now no chance of that happening.

Rodrigo Bentancur has missed the last five Premier League games due to suspension handed out by the FA after his comments towards teammate, and captain, Son Heung-min. Spurs appealed the ban, but a new FA statement has announced no change will be made to the initial suspension seven-game suspension.

"An independent appeal board has dismissed an appeal by Rodrigo Bentancur in relation to his recent suspension.

"An independent Regulatory Commission imposed a seven-match suspension on the Tottenham midfielder for an aggravated breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview," the statement read. "That appeal was dismissed following a hearing and the seven-match suspension remains as ordered by the regulatory commission.

"The appeal board's written reasons for its decision will be published in due course."

What Man United loanee Jadon Sancho did to Tottenham vs Chelsea corner flag amid Arsenal theory

Jadon Sancho removed a Tottenham Hotspur corner flag during Chelsea's 4-3 win over their London rivals, an act that some fans have interpreted as a jibe at Arsenal's reliance on scoring from corners.

The winger scored only his second goal since joining the Blues on loan from Manchester United to halve their deficit after Spurs went 2-0 ahead. Sancho's strike sparked a comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was the first of four unanswered goals to put them into an ultimately unassailable lead. However, the former England international caught the eye after Enzo Fernandez scored Chelsea's third to put them ahead for the first time on Sunday evening, particularly after picking up a corner flag.

After the team ran over to celebrate in front of their away end, Cole Palmer first displaced the corner flag before being pushed and pulled away by teammates Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto. Sancho then took possession of the prop with the Spurs crest on its flag before tossing it to the ground.

Blues fans spotted what happened during the celebrations and believe it could have been a dig at their Premier League title rivals, Arsenal. Chelsea's win moved them two points clear of them—and four behind Liverpool, having played a game more—after the Gunners only drew 1-1 with Fulham hours earlier.

Their equaliser at Craven Cottage came from a corner, as both in midweek against United did, too. Since the start of last season, Arsenal have scored 23 goals from corners, more than any other team in Europe's top five leagues.

Some fans have criticised Arsenal for their reliance on set-piece goals, likening Mikel Arteta's team to Stoke City. Dimitar Berbatov made this point on Wednesday night.

He quipped: "Arsenal are the new Stoke City, right? Depending on set pieces, which can give you the win."

Every word from Man City's Tottenham defeat as title challenge set

Pep Guardiola's side suffered a bitter fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions when Tottenham Hotspur put four past them without response at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

City remain five points behind Liverpool in the standings, but that could rise to eight if the Merseyside outfit pick up a win away at Southampton on Sunday. Guardiola's side must first navigate their Champions League tie against Feyenoord midweek, but Walker has vowed next week's clash at Anfield is the perfect time to inflict a devastating blow on their rivals and put themselves back in title contention.

Rodri's absence and growing fitness concerns throughout the squad has played a significant role in City's struggles in recent weeks. However, it is not the only problem currently blighting City's form.

Here, the Manchester Evening News has taken a look at everything that's been said in the fallout following Saturday's defeat:

Pep Guardiola

City manager Guardiola congratulated Tottenham following the defeat, but admitted his players are currently 'playing a little bit in our thoughts'.

"When you lose 0-4 there is nothing to say, it’s congratulate Tottenham," Guardiola said.

"We struggled a little bit to get the balls back. We are not able to win it or the extra action afterwards but (on the ball) we were quite decent.

"We created a lot, and we created a lot of chances in front of the keeper. We are a bit fragile right now, that is obvious. We struggled to score goals and after, when they arrived, they scored.

"We are playing a little bit in our thoughts, a little bit of negativity but this is normal.

"Football is a sense of mood and when you win a lot it gives you self-awareness you can do it and when you lose three games in a row in the Premier League that situation is there. Many things are going to happen.

"We have to break the results because the victories help us to be more positive and confident and we have to do it.

"But after eight years here I knew sooner or later we would drop.

"I never expected to lose three Premier League games in a row, but we have been incredibly consistent again and again and again and now we cannot deny the reality that sometimes happens in football and life is here.

"We have to do everything to change, especially for the next one, but the exceptionality we lived in eight years is not eternal. Sometimes you drop a little bit."

The City boss also challenged his players to accept the reality following their recent slump and bounce back in the title race.

"I would say when you lose three games in a row it is the most wrong thing to say that you will be champions," Guardiola added.

"I know the guys, I know they will be back and if I’m going to doubt about them it is something wrong about me.

"Maybe I will not be good enough to get back in those situations, and we will see, but I’ve been a football player.

"What we have done in the past is exceptional but losing three Premier League games in a row can happen. It happened to me with Barcelona in LaLiga.

"Now everything is a little bit against – when you feel confident the results are good, but now it is the opposite. We have to break it quick and accept it.

"The best way to go through the position is accept the reality. It’s not about me, you, the weather or the grass, we have to start to winning games.

"Now you realise how difficult what we have done is. You can be worse but when you said to me when you win 10 or 11 or 12 or 13 games in a row you’re going to win before the game, I don’t know.

"Now we recover and on Tuesday we have to be here again and hopefully we will change the dynamic."

Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker has warned Manchester City's title rivals they are determined to turn things around ahead of next weekend's crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool.

"It [a trip to Liverpool] is a great game to turn it around, to take three points off a team that's sat above you," Walker told Sky Sports. "But we can't go out and do a performance like that, because we're going to get walked over, so that's down to each and every one of us at the club, from now until next Sunday.

"We've a game midweek in the Champions League [against Feyenoord] to prepare for this massive game on Sunday and make sure we can keep within touching distance of Liverpool."

The defender continued: "We've lost confidence as a team because we haven't won in a while. What we've won in the past counts for nothing, and what it's about is winning the Premier League now, and we're making it harder for ourselves because we've got teams around us and one team that's above us that's doing really well.

"We'll keep fighting to turn this around, and hopefully the mojo comes back and you see the normal City that you have done in the last eight seasons."

Gary Neville

"We've seen City lose the odd game here, but we've very rarely seen them outplayed in every department, but that's what we're watching," Neville said.

"They look well short. As short as I've seen them since Pep's first season. I've not seen them as bad as this, how they've been in the last few weeks."

The Sky Sports pundit added that 'the vulnerabilities are clear for everyone to see' for City.

Neville added: "He will have wanted that international break to come, thinking it would be a reset moment. But now here, it further entrenches the opinion this is a City side currently in decline.

"It seems madness, when you think about what they've achieved. They're easy to play against and teams are encouraged when playing them. The vulnerabilities are clear for everyone to see."

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, the former defender added: "When you're on the decline - and I hate to use the word decline, but it does feel like it - it's a group of players with a number of things [going wrong].

"The idea of growing slightly old together, the idea of playing the volume of games together, the physical and mental demands of that, and the third thing is how many times you can keep going.

"I played for a manager and a club who kept going, but there were times when you just fall over. You've won the league three times on the bounce, twice, you've done doubles, you've won trebles, and you just can't go any further.

"Your shoulders just drop a bit, and it looks like that's the kind of thing that's happened here.

"It's a group of players who have run a million miles. They've been sensational. But they've become a little bit punch-drunk. Leggy, lacking in energy, they've lost players and a couple of vital players out through injury.

"It's a big game next week, Liverpool vs City, and there's only a few points in it, there's a long way to go, but it feels like today, if Man City were to win the title this season, I think it would be Pep's greatest Premier League."

Jamie Redknapp

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp argued that City's lack of 'clinical edge' should be the 'biggest worry' for Guardiola. He said: "You've got [Mateo] Kovacic, Ruben Dias who's a leader of men in the back four. Kevin De Bruyne's in and out of the team. Losing [Julian] Alvarez is a massive blow, when you can bring him on.

"They're off it, they're short. Things aren't quite clicking; [Ilkay] Gundogan couldn't get near anybody, the focus and balance wasn't right with Rico Lewis, Bernardo Silva and they didn't have enough energy to get around them.

"Once Tottenham scored, the confidence came. James Maddison started to get on the ball. You could see his tail was up, that's the sort of player he is.

"The fact you can't score a goal against the two centre-backs of Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin, that's the biggest worry - they didn't have that clinical edge."

Man City line-up vs Tottenham predicted as surprise midfield solution found and defence bolstered

Manchester City return to Premier League action tonight with Tottenham the visitors to the Etihad.

The Blues are in the midst of a four-game losing streak but have been bolstered over the international break by Pep Guardiola penning a new two-year contract and a number of injured players returning to training. Those positives have been tempered a touch by the news that Mateo Kovacic faces up to a month on the sidelines with an injury sustained on international duty with Croatia.

His absence will be keenly felt given Rodri's season is already over. Kovacic has been filling in admirably in the middle of midfield and it could see Guardiola spring something of a selection surprise.

John Stones, back in training but light on minutes, could be pressed into action in the middle of midfield. It's a role he has performed before, and well too. But it would be asking a lot of a player who has missed the last few weeks with a foot issue to slot in against a team of Tottenham's potential.

Yet the options facing Guardiola are slim and a midfield base of Stones and Ilkay Gundogan would offer a ball playing ability and defensive nous. Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, fit again after withdrawing from the England squad, are likely starters while the remaining role behind Erling Haaland could go to Jack Grealish.

He has been hampered by injury issues this term but his ball retention could be crucial against a side such as Spurs who thrive on transition. Kevin De Bruyne must be close to returning to the starting XI but perhaps next week's European encounter with Feyenoord offers the more sensible choice.

Savinho has had a lengthy international break trip with Brazil so may have to make do with a a place on the bench while Jeremy Doku has been nursing an injury and remains a doubt.

Erling Haaland will start up front fresh from four goals in two games for Norway during the international break while Ederson, despite also being away with Brazil, will continue in goal as one of City's best performing players this season.

Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji are back in training and if both are fit then they surely start at centre back with Ruben Dias sidelined and Stones pushed further forward. Josko Gvardiol has made the left back slot his own while Rico Lewis could get the nod on the right having sat out the second of England's Nations League games while Kyle Walker played 150 minutes across two fixtures despite having been short of form and fitness at club level.

Pep Guardiola Man City decision has 'irritated' Premier League rivals amid Tottenham predictions

Manchester City welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium this evening looking to get their season back on track.

City lost four successive games in all competitions heading into the international break and find themselves five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

But they will be buoyed by the news this week that manager Pep Guardiola has penned a contract extension until 2027 and that new found certainty should help things pick up on the pitch.

That will hopefully begin with the visit of Ange Postecoglou's side and it has certainly been reflected in the predictions of three prominent Premier League pundits.

Chris Sutton

The former Celtic and Blackburn forward told BBC Sport: "It's safe to say Pep Guardiola has severely irritated the rest of the footballing public by agreeing his contract extension with Manchester City.

"You can just imagine the groans from Liverpool, north London and the red half of Manchester, because they know how dominant City have been under him.

"City are not playing well at the moment, which is why they are on this run of four straight defeats in all competitions. People have been looking at them as if the wheels are coming off, but they are still second and only five points off the top.

"I do think Pep's new deal will give them a boost, and I am expecting them to bounce back. Tottenham have also been described as a 'crisis club' this season but they are still only three points off third place.

"The table is so congested that anyone in mid-table who wins a couple of games in a row is going to be right up there, but I don’t see Spurs getting anything at the Etihad Stadium.

"There will be goals in this game, because Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will not change his approach. He has already beaten City once this season, in the Carabao Cup, but I think Pep will come out on top this time."

Sutton's prediction: Man City 3-1 Tottenham

Mark Lawrenson

The former BBC Sport pundit told Paddy Power: "Manchester City playing Tottenham at home feels like a banker. We know that Spurs might score but they’ll get beat on the road, they always seem to do so.

"With Pep Guardiola signing his new contract that could breathe life into them, I know they’ve lost four in a row but only two of those were in the league. City’s post-Christmas charge might start early this year."

Lawrenson's prediction: Man City 2-0 Tottenham

Paul Merson

The former Arsenal star told Sportskeeda: "If someone would have said to me at the start of the season that Manchester City would lose four games in a row, I would have said never in a million years! Yet, here we are. It doesn't get any easier for them this weekend, Tottenham are a tough opponent.

"But then again, Tottenham are Spursy. Who would have thought they would get beat by Ipswich? Still, it wouldn't shock me if Spurs get a result here simply because Manchester City have not been Manchester City for a while now.

"Since the draw against Newcastle, barring the wins over Slovan Bratislava and Sparta Praha, City have not wiped the floor with anyone like we are used to seeing. I just can't imagine them losing five in a row, that's why I'm going for a City win here. But I can assure you it won't be an easy win.

"Tottenham have history of getting results against City, it goes back a long time. I remember them getting a result under Harry Redknapp to qualify for Europe, thanks to a goal from Peter Crouch. So it's a tricky game. There is no pressure on Tottenham this week and if they click, I think they have a chance. That's why I say I wouldn't be shocked if Spurs get a result.

"Manchester City not being their usual self is entirely down to Rodri's absence and not because Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan are firing. Rodri moves the ball quickly and that opens up space, City are missing that now. But I certainly think Gundogan looks nowhere near the player he was before, he is struggling."

Merson's prediction: Man City 2-1 Tottenham

Harry Redknapp

The former Tottenham manager told Bet Victor: "What a game this could be. Two sides who can score plenty, but two sides who’ve been sloppy at the back.

"I can’t believe Manchester City’s form right now; it shows how much they miss Rodri. I don’t care how good he is, a side with this talent should manage to survive. I think they’ll improve as the season goes on, particularly because I think they’ll be busy in the January window.

"I can’t make this Tottenham side out either, it’s unbelievable. They get a fantastic win at home to Aston Villa and then go and lose at home to Ipswich the next week! I like Ange Postecoglou, but there’s a lot of pressure on him now.

"It sounds like Pep Guardiola has agreed a new deal and that’s bound to give everyone a lift. I think City win this."

Rodri makes surprise Man City return ahead of Tottenham Hotspur clash

Manchester City midfielder Rodri returned to training to see his teammates on Friday ahead of Saturday evening's clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has been missing from the City squad since September when he suffered a cruciate ligament tear during the draw with Arsenal. The injury ruled the 28-year-old out of action for what is likely to be the remainder of the season.

However Rodri has set himself the optimistic timeline of returning for the Club World Cup next summer. While out of action, the midfielder claimed one of the biggest accolades in world football as he won the Ballon d'Or last month pipping Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham to the prize.

Sadly when a player is sidelined with injury, they are often cut adrift from their teammates on a day-to-day basis as they continue their recovery away from the main group. But, in a nice boost for City, Rodri visited the group with his Ballon d'Or.

He was embraced by his teammates, including Erling Haaland and manager Pep Guardiola, who signed a new contract this week. After reacquainting himself with them, Rodri joined the coaching staff on the training pitch as the Blues went through their final drills before this evening's big clash with Spurs in the Premier League.

In a clip shared on X, previously Twitter, the midfielder told the rest of the City squad: "I don't know what to say guys, it's a privilege to meet with you. I was missing you a lot, two months without coming here.

"It's a privilege for us to win this. So, so happy to come back, I follow you. You guys are my family, and this [the Ballon d'Or] is for the club, for you guys."

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out of next month's Carabao Cup quarter-final with Manchester United after being handed a seven-game ban by the Football Association [FA].

The Uruguayan international has been banned for seven domestic fixtures and fined £100,000 for using a racial slur about Spurs teammate Son Heung-min during the summer.

Bentancur, 27, was charged by the FA in September after comments he made about Son while appearing on Uruguayan TV.

During the TV appearance in question, Bentancur was asked by a presenter for a Tottenham shirt. Answering the question, the midfielder said: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same."

Bentancur later apologised to Son, who said he would "not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive."

Charging the midfielder earlier this year, the FA said it was "an alleged breach of FA rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview".

Issuing a statement in response to their decision to give Bentancur a seven-game ban and fine him £100,000 the FA said: "Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent regulatory commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing."

The nature of Bentancur's ban means he will miss Spurs' next six Premier League fixtures and the Carabao Cup quarter-final against United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 19. He will still be available for selection for the Londoners' Europa League assignments.

Bentancur, who has played every minute of Spurs' Carabao Cup campaign thus far, has made 15 appearances across all competitions so far this season, scoring one goal. He has featured in 10 of Spurs' first 11 Premier League matches this term.

Man United face scheduling nightmare as date for Carabao Cup clash vs Tottenham confirmed

Manchester United face the prospect of playing twice in less than 48 hours after the EFL announced the details of their Carabao Cup quarter-final with Tottenham Hotspur next month.

United progressed to the last-eight of the competition last week with a 5-2 win over Leicester City and their reward is a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium less than a week before Christmas.

It was confirmed that quarter-final ties will be played in the week commencing Monday, December 16, meaning it was presumed United's clash with the Londoners would be played on either Tuesday, December 17 or Wednesday, December 18, as per Carabao Cup tradition.

However, it has been announced United's clash with Ange Postecoglou's side will take place on Thursday, December 19, kicking-off at 8pm. The other three quarter-final ties will all be staged the night before. The contest has, unsurprisingly, been selected to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

However, United, as things currently stand, are scheduled to play Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Saturday, December 21, kick-off 3pm, meaning Ruben Amorim faces the prospect of having to get his team ready for two matches in less than 48 hours.

The Premier League announced its TV picks for the Christmas and New Year period last month, and United's clash with the Cherries was not selected for live broadcast in the UK, meaning it remained in its original slot of 3pm on December 21.

The fact United must now prepare for two fixtures less than 48 hours apart means the squad risks being pushed to its limits. Furthermore, United face Manchester City on Sunday, December 15, meaning they will now play three times in less than a week.

Interestingly, Tottenham's Premier League clash with Liverpool, that follows their Carabao Cup meeting with United, was selected for TV broadcast last month and was handed the 4.30pm slot on Sunday, December 22, meaning they will have two full days to prepare for the clash with Arne Slot's side.

United have not said if they will be requesting for the clash with Bournemouth to be pushed back.
