Tottenham Hotspur have been told by one club that Spurs can strike a cut-price deadline day move for a member of their squad, with the player offered out to Premier League sides in a last-gasp attempt to sell.

Spurs could still make one more signing before 11pm

Throughout this week, the consensus among reliable media sources, including Fabrizio Romano, is that Ange Postecoglou and co may still look to add one more name to their ranks before the cut-off at 11pm.

The Lilywhites have been exceptional at keeping their latest transfer dealings quiet, as evident by the sudden nature of their Wilson Odobert signing from Burnley around a fortnight ago, and it is believed Spurs could be working on a last-minute opportunity.

“The deal they did with Burnley [for Odobert] was completely silent," said Romano to GiveMeSport earlier this week.

"So, I think they're still working on something, and I'm told they're still working on something, but there is still nothing concrete or close to being completed. But I can confirm Tottenham are still in the market for opportunities.”

This follows reports that Tottenham are prioritising a new midfielder late in the day, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Yves Bissouma standing out as Postecoglou's only available options ahead of a long and congested season.

Spurs also have finances available following a number of key player sales, including Oliver Skipp, who completed a £20 million switch to Leicester City recently.

This week, the north Londoners have been linked with both Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes and Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, as journalist Dean Jones points out that the club want a new midfield runner.

“One thing I have been told a few times if that they want someone with power from the midfield," said Jones on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast (via TBR).

"Morgan Gibbs-White is someone they like but they like him as more of a number eight breaking out, not as a traditional number eight. They like that and they like Joao Gomes at Wolves."

However, deals for either player could be far too difficult to pull off this late in the window.

Tottenham told they can sign Josh Brownhill for cut-price fee

According to GiveMeSport, another midfield option, and a far cheaper one, could be Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The Clarets are looking to sell after their relegation to the Championship, and have offered him out to numerous Premier League sides, including Spurs. GMS write that Burnley have made Tottenham aware they can sign Brownhill for a cut-price £5 million fee, as they have with both Everton and Fulham.

Archie Gray repeat: Spurs offered chance to sign "fabulous" midfielder

It's finally here; after a summer of non-stop rumours, international football and globe-spanning preseason tours, the transfer deadline is upon us.

While some Premier League teams still have plenty of work to do before the clock strikes 11 tonight, others seemingly have a lot less to do, including Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners have already signed a plethora of talented players over the last couple of months, from Wilson Odobert to Dominic Solanke.

However, while the Lilywhites are unlikely to add any more big-name stars to Ange Postecoglou's squad today, they have been linked with a potential bargain in a signing reminiscent of Archie Gray's last month.

Tottenham's deadline day activity

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are one of several clubs who have been offered Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that Everton and Fulham are just a couple of the clubs who have been made aware of the 28-year-old's availability.

The good news for the North Londoners, who are interested in the player, per the report, is that he's available for a cut-price fee of just £5m due to his contract expiring next summer.

He wouldn't be a game-changing signing for Spurs, but given the price and his experience, bringing him to the club before the window slams shut tonight seems like a great way to improve the squad.

Why Brownhill would be a good signing for Spurs

Okay, so before we look at why Spurs should sign Brownhill, let's examine how his transfer would be reminiscent of Gray's last month.

Well, to get straight to the point, it would see the club dipping back into the Championship to sign an incredibly important player from a team who was recently in the Premier League and, while the Clarets ace isn't going to be as crucial to Postecoglou's squad in the long term, he could be a useful addition for the here and now.

For example, he made 33 Premier League appearances, mostly in central midfield, for Vincent Kompany's side last season, in which he scored four goals and provided two assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 5.5 games, which is quite impressive for someone in his position in a team that was relegated.

Moreover, he had the captain's armband for the majority of those games and as Tottenham look to build a young and exciting team over the next few years, having an older head who's happy to play a supporting role and who also has leadership qualities can only be a good thing.

Lastly, across his entire career to date, the "fabulous player", as dubbed by former professional Lee Hendrie, has only missed 15 games through injury, meaning he could be relied upon to remain fit for the games in which he's called upon.

Ultimately, Brownhill is not a player who will change games for Spurs, and his potential transfer to the club would probably not even be picked up upon by fans of other clubs. However, he is a Premier League-proven midfielder with plenty of experience, a clean bill of health and leadership qualities, and he's supposedly available for just £5m.

Therefore, Levy and Co should look to bring him in before the window closes tonight, as he could be a dream squad player for Postecoglou.

Tottenham fancy signing £60 million star alongside Joao Gomes - journalist

Tottenham Hotspur fancy signing a £60 million Premier League player alongside Wolves star Joao Gomes, as the north Londoners reportedly scour the market for late opportunities to bring in a new midfielder.

Spurs look at making one more signing and it could be a midfielder

Spurs have been exceptional at keeping their business quiet this summer, as highlighted by their suddenly announced transfer of Wilson Odobert from Burnley, so the consensus is that we cannot rule out late surprises at N17.

Fabrizio Romano is among the media sources to claim that Tottenham are looking at a last-minute transfer opportunity, coming after their latest piece of business, having loaned out winger Manor Solomon to Leeds United for the rest of the season.

"The deal they did with Burnley [for Odobert] was completely silent," said Romano.

"So, I think they're still working on something, and I'm told they're still working on something, but there is still nothing concrete or close to being completed. But I can confirm Tottenham are still in the market for opportunities.”

This message from Romano provides real hope for supporters that manager Ange Postecoglou could see one more name come through the door before this summer's transfer cut-off on August 31, with deadline day looming tomorrow.

Tottenham have sealed deals for Timo Werner, who extended his loan spell at the club for the rest of 2024/2025, with Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke and Odobert also putting pen to paper on moves to north London as the club's four senior additions of the window.

In terms of the next addition that Postecoglou could make, there are suggestions that Tottenham are eyeing up the possibility of a new midfielder, following their £20 million-plus sale of Oliver Skipp to Leicester City.

Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray are Postecoglou's current options in that position, but the latter two are pretty young, and an injury to Pedro Porro could force Tottenham to utilise Gray in the right-back role - which he played a lot for Leeds last season.

Tottenham fancy signing Morgan Gibbs-White alongside Joao Gomes

According to Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast, relayed by TBR, there are two midfield targets in particular catching the eye at Spurs.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham fancy signing the likes of Gomes and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, if they're indeed going to reinforce that area of the park.

“One thing I have been told a few times if that they want someone with power from the midfield," said Jones (via TBR).

"Morgan Gibbs-White is someone they like but they like him as more of a number eight breaking out, not as a traditional number eight. They like that and they like Joao Gomes at Wolves."

After a long summer of international football, preseason friendlies and non-stop rumours, the transfer window finally comes to a close tomorrow night.

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a relatively successful window thus far, with youngsters like Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert giving fans a reason to be hopeful about the future and statement signings like Dominic Solanke giving them a reason to be excited about the here and now.

However, while the North Londoners might have put their feet up at this point in the past, content with the business they'd already completed, reports suggest Daniel Levy and Co could be set to make at least one more surprise signing.

In fact, the latest star touted for a move to N17 has won comparisons to an incredibly talented but rather disliked player among the Spurs faithful, Gabriel Magalhães.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from transfers expert Ben Jacobs on the Last Word on Spurs Podcast, Tottenham have been interested in Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah in the past.

Jacobs explains that the German defender was discussed at the club under former managing director Fabio Paratici and that while nothing has materialised for the player yet this summer, he could still move.

The good news is that the fee required to secure the player's services likely wouldn't be an issue for the North Londoners, as Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed yesterday that Leverkusen are looking for about €30m, which converts to about £25m.

However, according to plenty of reports, the bad news is that German behemoths Bayern Munich are also incredibly keen on the player, meaning it could take a lot of convincing from Ange Postecoglou and Co to get Tah to move to N17 before 11pm tomorrow.

That said, the 28-year-old is an incredibly gifted centre-back who is well worth fighting for, and the fact that he's been compared to Gabriel can only be a good thing, despite how the fans may feel about the Brazilian.

How Tah compares to Gabriel

Okay, so before we get into some of the reasons why Tah would be an excellent signing for Tottenham before the window closes, let's examine this comparison to Gabriel and where it comes from.

So, it primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one and, in this case, has concluded that the Brazilian is the seventh most similar centre-back to the German.

Now, there are obviously some aesthetic similarities between the pair due to them both being tall defenders known for their ability to bully smaller opponents. But to understand why FBref considers them to be so similar, you have to take a look at the underlying numbers in which they rack closely, such as progressive carries, shots and shots on target, short and medium passing accuracy, shot-creating actions, and aerial duels won, all per 90.

Shot-creating actions are pieces of play that lead to a shot. These include moments such as a pass, take-on or foul being drawn.

However, while the comparison to a player who made it into the most recent PFA Team of the Season should certainly encourage Spurs that the Leverkusen ace is the right defender to go after, there is another reason he'd be an incredible signing: his experience.

Last season, the 6 foot 5 "battleship", as dubbed by former teammate Christoph Kramer, made 48 appearances for Die Werkself - 45 of which were starts - as they won their first-ever Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal without losing a single domestic game all year. In fact, the only game they lost last season was the Europa League final.

Moreover, the Hamburg-born veteran has won 29 senior caps for the German national team, so he clearly has the ability and mentality to play at the very highest level, and while there is plenty of competition at centre-back in the Spurs squad, he'd help raise the floor massively.

Therefore, while it might be challenging to pull off so late in the window, Tottenham should act on their longstanding interest in Tah and bring him to North London before the clock strikes 11pm tomorrow.

Spurs could sign their answer to Ugarte with late £50m transfer

Description

It's been a busy summer of transfers for Tottenham Hotspur this year, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

Daniel Levy and Co have seen the likes of Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave. At the same time, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke joined the Ange Postecoglou revolution.

Now, with just under two days left until the window finally comes to a close, most teams would call it a day, but according to recent reports, the Lilywhites are still keen on several Premier League stars.

The latest name touted for a move to the club would be a real coup and could become Ange's answer to Manuel Ugarte.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to transfers expert Dean Jones on the latest episode of the Ranks FC Podcast, Tottenham are interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers dynamo Joao Gomes.

Jones claims that Spurs "want someone with power from the midfield" and that they really "like Joao Gomes at Wolves."

There is no mention as to how much the Brazilian powerhouse would cost the North Londoners, but reports linking him with a move to N17 earlier this month revealed that a fee in the region of £50m would be enough to tempt the Old Gold into selling.

It would be a costly and potentially quite tricky deal to get done with such little time left in the window, but given Gomes' ability, it is one worth pursuing, especially as he's won comparisons to Ugarte before.

Why Gomes would be a great signing

Okay, so before getting into why Gomes would be such an incredible signing for the Lilywhites, let's examine this comparison to Ugarte and where it comes from.

So, this specific comparison stems from Football Transfers, which considers the Uruguayan to be the eighth most similar player to the Brazilian in their entire database, and it's not hard to see why.

For example, like the Montevideo-born star, the Wolves ace is a hard-working teammate who can occupy both defensive and central midfield, and while the former Sporting CP ace starts far more games in the former, his heatmap from last season shows that he operates slightly higher up the pitch.

Additionally, both players make an extraordinary number of tackles. For example, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the soon-to-be Red Devil and the former Flamengo star sit in the top 1% of midfielders for tackles per 90.

So, while it's clear that the Rio de Janeiro-born star shares some impressive defensive characteristics with Ugarte; he could also offer Postecoglou more going forward.

Respected data analyst Ben Mattinson described the 23-year-old as an "all-action eight" who's a "dog of a ball winner" and, perhaps most important of all in terms of what he can bring in the final third, an "excellent box-crasher."

Ultimately, while it's undoubtedly late in the day to bring in a new midfielder, Gomes appears to be the perfect addition to this Spurs side, as someone who can help mop up attacks and then get on the end of a rapid counterattack as well. Therefore, while it would be costly, Levy and Co should do what they can to bring Postecoglou his answer to Ugarte.

Spurs target "sensational" £40m ace who'd help Maddison reach another level

Tottenham Hotspur steadied the ship on Saturday afternoon with a thumping 4-0 win against Everton and, in turn, reminded the rest of the Premier League that at their free-flowing best, they can tear teams to pieces.

However, Ange Postecoglou's side don't play again until Sunday, so, like the rest of the league, their fans have shifted their focus to the transfer window's conclusion.

Thus far, the North Londoners have enjoyed a relatively fruitful summer, bringing in youngsters like Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert alongside established stars like Dominic Solanke, and while many clubs would now kick their feet up happy with their business, Daniel Levy and Co are reportedly keen to do more.

In fact, recent reports have touted a Premier League-proven midfielder for a move to N17 before 11pm tomorrow, a player who'd add some extra quality to the squad and potentially help James Maddison reach another level.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to transfers expert Dean Jones on the latest episode of the Ranks FC Podcast, Tottenham are interested in signing Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White.

Jones revealed that the Lilywhites are looking to bring in a player with "power" to play in the midfield and that Gibbs-White is "someone they like," even if they view him less as a traditional eight and more as someone adept at "breaking out" of midfield.

It's not mentioned how much the £80k-per-week ace could cost Spurs, but reports from earlier in the summer claimed that the Tricky Trees would demand an offer in excess of £40m.

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line at this point in the window, but given Gibbs-White's quality, it's one worth pursuing, especially as he could help Maddison reach another level.

Why Gibbs-White would be a great signing for Maddison

Okay, so there are two main reasons that Gibbs-White could potentially help Maddison reach another level this season: his positional versatility and output.

The reason that the latter would help the former Leicester City ace is simply that if the Forest man is playing alongside him, creating chances for the 27-year-old and finishing the chances he creates for him, his goal and assist tallies will naturally improve.

For example, despite playing in a rather lacklustre team last season, the Stafford-born dynamo scored six goals and provided ten assists in 42 appearances, equating to a goal involvement once every 2.62, lending credence to journalist Josh Bunting's description of the player as "sensational."

His versatility, on the other hand, could help the Lilywhites number ten in a couple of ways. The first is that, despite his experience playing in attacking midfield, his ability to play in central midfield and even out wide means he won't cannibalise the minutes his potential new teammate will be expecting this season.

The next reason is that his ability to fill in where needed should hopefully allow him to build up more of a relationship with the regular starters and, in turn, help improve the all-around effectiveness of the side.

Ultimately, while the fee is high, Gibbs-White's attacking ability combined with his positional versatility would see him become a very useful player at Tottenham and someone who could facilitate Maddison, thus helping him reach another level.

£42m forward who Spurs have discussed signing could make surprise late move

A £42 million forward who Tottenham chiefs have held internal discussions over signing is "one to watch" in the final days of the window, with Fabrizio Romano sharing a significant update on his future.

Spurs planning one more signing for the summer window

After sealing a quartet of summer deals for senior additions in Timo Werner, Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert, who all cost a total of around £113 million, it is believed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could look to bring in one more fresh face for manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs sealed their first Premier League win of the season last Saturday with an impressive 4-0 victory over Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with goals from Yves Bissouma, Son Heung-min (2) and Cristian Romero rounding off a superb display.

It is perhaps a sign of things to come from Postecoglou's men, who are looking to build upon their fifth-placed finish of last season by going one better and qualifying for the Champions League, and perhaps even competing for major silverware.

However, they face different challenges in 2024/2025, namely their increasingly congested fixture calender due to their involvement in the new Europa League format - which is set to kick off next month.

Tottenham are believed to be plotting to move for a new midfielder before the transfer cut-off on August 31, with Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Gray and Bissouma standing out as their only available options.

Gray predominantly starred at right-back for Leeds United last term, prompting speculation as to how Postecoglou will utilise the English sensation, with Emerson Royal joining AC Milan earlier this window and there being no natural senior cover for Pedro Porro in that position.

Meanwhile, there have been other suggestions that Spurs are also prioritising a new centre-back signing before the window closes, so it appears that the Lilywhites may not be done with their most recent acquisition of Odobert from Burnley.

It remains to be seen exactly which position will be strengthened before the window shuts later this week, but another player on their radar is apparently Bayern Munich forward Kingsley Coman.

Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport recently claimed that Spurs chiefs have discussed making a late swoop for Coman, who would cost around £42 million to prise away from the Bundesliga.

Coman could make surprise late Bayern exit as Tottenham eye move

The £276,000-per-week winger is subject to intense interest from numerous Premier League clubs, according to Romano, who explained on his YouTube channel that Coman could make a surprise late Bayern exit as Tottenham allegedly consider him.

“A player to watch in the final 24 hours, 48 hours, 56 hours or whatever. In the final days is Kingsley Coman because interest in Coman is still there," said the reporter.

“It’s a strong interest from Premier League clubs, from Barcelona. Barca are considering Coman and Federico Chiesa.

“Kingsley Coman has several possibilities also in England. So he’s going to be one to watch for the final days because there is still an expectation for Coman to leave Bayern. There could be a surprise with Coman.”

The Frenchman has played just 16 league minutes for Bayern this season, coming after his six total goal contributions for Bayern in 17 appearances last season.

Tottenham now ready to make late move for midfielder after £20m+ Skipp sale

Tottenham Hotspur are prioritising a late window move to sign a midfielder after selling Oliver Skipp for over £20 million, with Ange Postecoglou and co not quite done in the transfer market just yet.

Spurs offload Hojbjerg and Skipp with Postecoglou left short

Alongside Skipp, Denmark international midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg completed a season-long loan move to Marseille earlier in the summer, which includes a £17 million obligation to buy.

This has left Spurs with just Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma as Postecoglou's senior first choice options in the middle of the park, while summer signing Archie Gray has come off the bench in both of their two Premier League games so far this campaign.

It is unclear whether Postecoglou plans to use Gray, who predominantly starred at right-back for Leeds United last season, in the middle throughout 2024/2025 - with some reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano previously claiming Tottenham could swoop for another natural midfield option before the window closes.

"It is a possibility for Tottenham to bring in a new midfielder after Hojbjerg's exit," said Fabrizio Romano to GiveMeSport in late July.

"I still think that they want to do something in the offensive position."

More recent reports state that Postecoglou is desperate to sign an alternative to Bentancur for Spurs, with Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes among the names linked to joining them before the August 31st cut-off.

Tottenham have already sealed four major summer signings this window, including their season-long loan extension for Timo Werner, with Gray, striker Dominic Solanke and highly-rated young winger Wilson Odobert coming in to bolster key areas.

Postecoglou's side chalked up their first victory of 24/25 with their 4-0 home win over Everton last Saturday, and the Australian will be looking to build upon that impressive win over the Merseysiders as they seek to improve on last season's fifth-placed finish.

A strong end to the summer window, and potentially one last signing to bolster the squad, would hugely benefit them as they face a more congested fixture calendar with their involvement in the new Europa League format - starting next month.

Tottenham prioritising late move to sign midfielder for Postecoglou

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, Tottenham are indeed still in the market for one last transfer in a new midfield option.

Indeed, it is believed Spurs are prioritising a late swoop for one new midfielder after selling Skipp for over £20 million, as the Englishman's transfer to Leicester City has both freed up space in the squad and bolstered their summer budget.

It is unclear exactly who they are planning to move for, with no specific targets named in the report, but perhaps supporters could expect some activity in the last few days of August.

Werner upgrade: Spurs could land an amazing £34m Saka & Martinelli hybrid

There are just a few days remaining before the summer transfer window slams shut, and as things stand, Tottenham Hotspur fans have a lot to be happy about.

Daniel Levy and Co have signed a plethora of talented players, from young prospects like Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-Hyeok, who could go on to become superstars to first-team ready and Premier League-proven level raisers like Dominic Solanke.

However, the decision to extend Timo Werner's loan deal for another campaign still feels like a slight mistake, as while he wasn't dreadful last season, he was underwhelming and isn't going to help the club reach the next level this year.

Interestingly, the Lilywhites were linked with a player who'd be an ideal upgrade on the German earlier this month, who has been compared to Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Werner's Spurs spell

In the January transfer window this year, Spurs needed to bring in some more attacking reinforcements, as following a rapid start to the season, they were starting to falter. So, Levy and Co turned to former Chelsea attacker Werner, who had fallen out of favour at RB Leipzig.

The club agreed to a six-month loan with an option to buy at £15m, hopeful that Postecoglou's aggressive style would help the 28-year-old regain the incredible goalscoring form that led to his initial transfer to Stamford Bridge in 2020.

However, instead of a game-changing attacker who scored for fun, the North Londoners ended up with a fairly useful winger who was as profligate as everyone remembered and ended up getting injured before the end of the campaign.

Now, it's important to stress that the 57-capped German was not terrible for the Lilywhites. In fact, his tally of two goals and three assists in 14 appearances was perfectly serviceable. But therein lies the problem: he's simply okay.

The Stuttgart-born ace has scored 15 goals or more only once in the last four seasons, and based on his displays last year, it doesn't look like he is going to this season either.

So, if he's not good enough to take the club forward, bringing him in for another season seems counterproductive, especially when the club was linked with someone far better already this summer, someone compared to Martinelli and Saka: Kingsley Coman.

How Coman compares to Martinelli and Saka

The player in question is Bayern Munich star Coman, who was touted for a move to N17 last week for a fee around £34m, or potentially even on a season-long loan.

The "complete" winger, as dubbed by former France U17 coach Patrick Gonfalone, is an incredible talent, and while last season wasn't his best campaign to date, he still racked up five goals and three assists, while the season prior saw him chalk up nine goals and seven assists.

With that said, most football fans are more than aware of how talented the former Paris Saint-Germain dynamo is, but where do these comparisons to Saka and Martinelli come from?

Well, aside from the positional similarities, which are plain to see, these specific comparisons stem from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this case they concluded that the Brazilian is the number one most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Bayern ace, while the Englishman is the seventh.

The easiest way to see these similarities for yourself is to examine their underlying numbers to see where they rank closely. For the former Ituano gem, it's in metrics such as non-penalty expected goals plus assists, actual non-penalty goals plus assists, short passing accuracy, crosses and ball recoveries, all per 90.

When it comes to the Gunners' number seven, he ranks closely in a number of other underlying statistics.

These include metrics such as expected assists, goals per shot and shot on target, blocks, dribblers tackled and touches in the attacking third, also all per 90.

Now, there are also similarities beyond the raw stats that the former Juventus gem shares with the two Arsenal stars, such as his goalscoring and creative abilities.

Ultimately, while Werner isn't a dreadful player, he's not good enough to help Tottenham progress this season, and while the fans don't like them, the fact Coman has been compared to Saka and Martinelli is just another reason why Levy and Co should look to bring him in before the window closes on Friday night.

Spurs can ease Solanke blow by signing "mind-blowing" Richarlison upgrade

Description

Tottenham Hotspur made up for their opening weekend blunder last Monday with an incredible display of attacking football against Everton at home on Saturday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou's side were under plenty of pressure, but they rose to the occasion and reminded the rest of the league just how good they can be when at their free-flowing best.

What made it even more impressive was that they were without their new star striker, Dominic Solanke, who could be out until after the international break with an ankle injury.

It's not an ideal situation and highlights how light the club are in certain areas, although with the transfer window still open for another few days, Daniel Levy still has time to strengthen Postecoglou's attacking options.

The club wouldn't even have to look that hard, as they were linked with an ideal signing earlier this month, although the player in question would probably be bad news for Richarlison's game time.

Why Spurs signed Solanke

Now, for as wildly entertaining as Spurs were at points last season and as many goalscoring opportunities as they created through Postecoglou's attacking brand of football, they only scored the seventh most goals in the league.

Worse yet, according to Understat, they underperformed their open-play expected goals figure by a massive 5.55, a problem that needed attention if the team were going to take another step forward this season.

So, once the window opened a few months ago, Levy and Co went to work looking for a new number nine to help them make the most of the chances they create, eventually settling on Bournemouth's Solanke.

They eventually paid the Cherries a whopping £65m for the Englishman. While that is an enormous sum of money, it's probably justified, as in 42 appearances across all competitions last season, he found the back of the net on 21 occasions and provided four assists for good measure.

This would have made him the top goalscorer and the second most productive player overall in the Lilywhites squad last season, so it's easy to see why the North Londoners opted to break the bank to secure his services.

However, his minor ankle injury now means Postecoglou has to rely on his other attacking options, and that includes Richarlison; although, based on his performances for the club following his transfer two seasons ago, it could be time to move on from him, and the perfect upgrade has already been touted for a move to N17 this summer.

How David compares to Richarlison

Yes, the striker in question is LOSC Lille ace Jonathan David, who has been heavily linked with the Lilywhites all summer and was again linked in an article from football.london's Alasdair Gold late last week.

If Spurs did act on their interest in the Canadian international, it wouldn't require a huge sum of money either, as due to his contract expiring next summer, reports have claimed he could be available for as little as £20m.

With that said, how does he stack up to Richarlison? If he were to move to North London, it would likely be to replace the Brazilian as the backup striker, at least to start with anyway.

Unfortunately for the former Everton man, there isn't much competition at all when it comes to the pair's raw output.

For example, while the Nova Venécia-born forward was reasonably impressive last season, racking up 12 goals and four assists in 31 appearances, equating to a goal involvement every 1.93 games, he was outclassed by the Lille ace.

In his 47 appearances last season, the "mind-blowing" poacher, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored 26 goals and provided nine assists, meaning that despite playing more matches, he maintained a more impressive average of goal involvement every 1.34 games.

Moreover, like the former Watford ace, the Brooklyn-born goal machine can play in several positions from centre-forward to attacking midfield and even second-striker, suggesting that Postecoglou could supercharge his frontline by playing him alongside Solanke when he's fit again.

Ultimately, Spurs undoubtedly improved their attack by signing the Bournemouth star this summer, but his recent injury has shed light on how thin the striker position is in the squad. Therefore, Levy and Co should go out and make one more signing before the window closes and bring David to North London.
