Description

Manchester United will not sack Ruben Amorim if they lose to Tottenham in the Europa League final this month, according to reports.

Following a 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham on Sunday, Amorim sparked speculation over his future as United manager in his post-match press conference.

‘I don’t want to talk about players. I’m talking about myself, the culture in the club, the culture in the team,’ Amorim said.

‘I have that feeling, we need to change that and we need to be really strong in the summer and be brave because we will not have the next season like this.

‘If we start like this, or if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different persons.’

United currently sit 16th in the Premier League with 39 points from 36 games this season and have registered just two wins in their last 10 matches.

However, Amorim has the chance to finish the campaign with a trophy as United play Tottenham in the Europa League final on May 21.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is already under significant pressure ahead of the final but according to The Guardian, Amorim’s job will be safe, irrespective of the outcome in Bilbao next week.

The report adds that Amorim views Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as key players for his rebuild at United.

Cunha has a £62.5 million release clause in his contract with Wolves and is open to joining United this summer.

Meanwhile, Delap has a £30m relegation release clause in his deal with Ipswich which can be triggered in the upcoming transfer window.

Dejan Kulusevski injury update as Tottenham star forced off ahead of Europa League final

Dejan Kulusevski injury update as Tottenham star forced off ahead of Europa League final - Metro.co.uk
Description

Tottenham were dealt a fresh injury scare after Dejan Kulusevski was forced off in the first half of their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

Kulusevski started in Spurs’ Europa League semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt, but was not rested for Sunday’s game against Palace.

And there were concerns when the Swede went down and was eventually brought off after just 20 minutes following a heavy collision with Marc Guehi.

With James Maddison recently ruled of for the season, there was concern that Kulusevski would also face a spell on the sidelines just ten days out from Spurs’ Europa League final with Manchester United.

However, Ange Postecoglou was quick to allay fears over the extent of Kulusevski’s injury when speaking after his side’s 2-0 defeat at home.

‘Should be OK, just talking to him after,’ the Australian said.

‘Medical team not too concerned with him, more of a knock than anything else.’

But while Kulusevski’s injury may not be of concern, Tottenham were left with more questions to answer after their 20th league defeat of the season saw them slip to 17th in the table.

A brace from Eberechi Eze provided Palace with the perfect preparation for their own final in the FA Cup next weekend, but Postecoglou admitted his side’s impending European final was no excuse for Sunday’s poor showing.

‘We weren’t good enough today. We didn’t reach the level we needed in the Premier League and fell short,’ he told BBC Match of the Day.

More Trending

‘We were disjointed because of the number of changes to the team which obviously affects what we’re trying to do. I still think we could have performed better.

‘We haven’t been able to navigate that process as much as we would have liked, we wouldn’t have made as many changes in an ideal world but that’s the situation we’re in.

‘It’s quite clear why we’ve lost so many games. If we weren’t in Europe or had a Carabao Cup run and only had the league to think about since Christmas then we’d be higher in the league.’

Perhaps the only positive for Tottenham on the day was the return of captain Heung-min Son, who played 33 minutes off the bench having missed the last seven games with injury.

Description

Mikel Arteta insists he unfazed by the prospect of Tottenham ending their trophy drought if they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final this month.

Arsenal will finish the campaign without silverware following their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final this week.

Meanwhile, Spurs have endured a miserable season in the Premier League but Ange Postecoglou could still come away with a trophy this term as they will play United in the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.

Spurs have not won a trophy since beating Chelsea in the League Cup final in 2008, while their last success in Europe was a UEFA Cup victory in 1984.

When asked about the prospect of seeing Spurs win the Europa League this season, Arteta replied: ‘For me, I have enough looking at my own garden.’

Arteta also praised Arne Slot, who has guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season at Anfield after taking over from Jurgen Klopp last year.

‘What Arne did was very intelligent,’ Arteta said.

‘He had all the platform – it is a team that has been competing and winning trophies throughout the last 10 years. It’s nothing new.

‘He’s added his values, and he maintained a lot of the things. He’s obviously given his fingerprints to a lot of things that are very, very good as well.

‘The most important thing is he got the best out of the players.

‘And the players that have to make the difference, they were there constantly, making the difference for them. That’s capital to win any major trophy.’

Ange Postecoglou aims cheeky dig at Arsenal after Tottenham reach Europa League final - Metro.co.uk
Description

Ange Postecoglou has aimed a thinly-veiled swipe at Arsenal and their European exit this week after Tottenham set up an all-English Europa League final against Manchester United.

Spurs sealed a 2-0 win away to Bodo Glimt on Thursday night, beating the Norwegian outfit 5-1 on aggregate.

United joined them with a huge aggregate victory of their own, putting four past Athletic Bilbao after conceding early at Old Trafford to progress 7-1 across two legs.

United and Spurs have endured disastrous Premier League campaigns, currently sat 15th and 16th respectively with hopes for a top 10 finish long gone.

But in reaching the Europa League final, both have the chance to salvage some unlikely silverware and secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

With English clubs dominating the Europa League, no Premier League side will be involved in this year’s Champions League final after Arsenal crashed out against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

The French champions also dumped Liverpool and Aston Villa out of the competition with Manchester City also beaten in Paris before crashing out of the competition at the play-off round against Real Madrid.

Speaking after the win in Norway, Postecoglou suggested two teams so off the pace in the league reaching the final and will ‘upset a lot of people’ – with Arsene Wenger this week suggesting the winners of the competition should not be qualifying for the Champions League.

Implying Tottenham’s critics are trying to play down their European run, the Spurs boss insisted the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and City should try reaching a final ‘if it’s so easy’.

‘It’s going to upset a lot of people isn’t it,’ Postecoglou said. ‘The debate’s now raging, the latest one is that neither of us will be able to get a trophy if we win, they’re just going to take a team photo because we’re not worthy.

‘I mean, who cares if we’re struggling in the league? Why is that important? If it’s so easy to get to a final, then why doesn’t everyone who finishes in the top three do it? It’s a separate thing. It’s got nothing to do with league form.

‘We understand our league form hasn’t been great. We understand the struggles we’ve had. A lot of them are because of the situation we’ve been in.

‘But how that diminishes the achievement of getting to a final. Like I said, this club and others have finished in first, second or third in the Premier League and haven’t made finals.’

Tottenham’s run through the knockout stages saw them get past AZ Alkmaar and Eintracht Frankfurt before beating Norwegian opposition in the semis. United meanwhile beat Real Sociedad, Lyon and Athletic Bilbao.

‘Why should that be diminished? I couldn’t care less who’s struggling and who’s not. I think both us and Manchester United have earned the right to be there,’ Postecoglou continued.

‘I think we’ve probably beaten teams who will be in the Champions League next year, on our road to getting there. So looking forward to it, should be a great game.’

Ruben Amorim sends warning to Man Utd stars ahead of Europa League final v Spurs

Ruben Amorim sends warning to Man Utd stars ahead of Europa League final v Spurs - Metro.co.uk
Description

Ruben Amorim has warned his Manchester United players that their run to the Europa League final ‘means nothing’ if they don’t beat Tottenham.

United smashed Athletic Bilbao 4-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday and will next face Spurs in a mouth-watering all-English final in Spain on May 21.

Ange Postecoglou’s side knocked out Bodo/Glimt in the other Europa League semi-final showdown and are looking to secure their fourth win of the season over the Red Devils when the two sides meet yet again.

Spurs have beaten United twice in the Premier League this term and also eliminated Amorim’s team from the Carabao Cup in December.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League final, Amorim told TNT Sports: ‘[Winning the trophy is] the least we can do for these fans, for the support they have given us in this tough season.

‘I’m stressed already because of the final. If we don’t do it, it means nothing, but we’re happy to be there so let’s see.’

United and Spurs have both massively struggled in the Premier League this term, sitting 15th and 16th in the top-flight table with just three games left.

‘It is quite similar, for me and Ange,’ Amorim added. ‘It is a tough moment. One of us is going to win. It is going to be a big final, we are going to try to win.’

Quizzed about United’s three defeats to Spurs this season, Amorim said: ‘First of all, you have to think in the odds, it is hard for a team to lose four times in a row.

‘So we can think about it in that way. We need to have a full squad and to study the game quite well.

‘We need to have a little bit of luck. Today we conceded a goal, but we had so many transitions to score and we didn’t. We have to be clinical in that game.’

Spurs boss Postecoglou, meanwhile, is ‘excited’ for the Europa League final showdown against United.

‘We deserved to go through and we’re excited for the final,’ the Australian said.

‘We have grown in maturity through the competition. You can see the lads are understanding what is required.

‘We kept them (Bodo/Glimt) to a minimum, the lads were focused on what we needed to do.

‘We have used every player in the squad, we are used to adversity and overcoming that. They have handled it all really well.

‘It could’ve been nervy. It’s why we do what we do, you understand the context of what this club has been trying to achieve for a while now.

‘Managers and players come and go but there is one constant and it is the fan. Who knows, hopefully we can do something special. We will keep doing what we’re doing.’

Xavi sends message to Tottenham over Ange Postecoglou replacement link

Xavi sends message to Tottenham over Ange Postecoglou replacement link - Metro.co.uk
Description

Xavi says he would ‘love’ to manage in the Premier League after being tipped to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Postecoglou is still in contention to end the season with a trophy as Spurs are one game away from reaching the Europa League final.

However, the 59-year-old is under huge pressure due to Spurs’ woeful Premier League campaign where his side currently sit 16th in the table with 38 points from 35 games.

Xavi, meanwhile, U-turned on his decision to leave Barcelona last season but ended up being sacked in May after ending the campaign without a trophy.

The 45-year-old, who guided Barca to the La Liga title in 2023, is now among the favourites to succeed Postecoglou at Spurs and says he is keen on a move to England.

‘There’s no hurry for me, but I’d like a good project,’ Xavi said in an interview with The Athletic.

‘Like, ‘You have four years to work and make a project’. I’d love to work in the Premier League because I love the passion there. In Spain, it’s too much about the result.

‘Look what has happened to Ancelotti and people criticising him. It’s not fair. He won 30 trophies in 10 years and he’s criticised like he’s not won anything. Valverde said it perfectly when he said: ‘If Ancelotti is criticised, what hope is there for the rest of us?’.

‘But the pressure in Spain is difficult, especially at Barca and Madrid.

‘Chelsea with Maresca. Good project. Arteta with Arsenal – it’s his sixth year with Arsenal and there were seasons when it was difficult, but his club trusted the process and continued. He’s doing well. That doesn’t happen in Spain.

‘Or a national team, that would appeal. When I dreamed about being a coach, I dreamed about being in a World Cup or European Championship.’

The Tipster: Tottenham can reach Europa League final despite defeat in Bodo/Glimt.

The Tipster: Tottenham can reach Europa League final despite defeat in Bodo/Glimt. - Metro.co.uk
Description

Tottenham’s season is on a knife edge as they head to the Arctic Circle bidding to book their trip to sunny Bilbao later this month for the Europa League final.

Ange Postecoglou’s Premier League underachievers take a 3-1 lead into the semi-final, second leg, which will be played on the artificial surface at the Aspmyra Stadion in front of less than 500 supporters from north London, and Spurs have been absolutely shocking on their travels this term.

They have won just twice away from N17 in their last ten matches in all competitions – losing seven – but tellingly one of those victories was the 1-0 quarter-final success in Frankfurt which kept them on track to win their first silverware since their League Cup triumph 17 years ago.

Their hosts, Bodo/Glimt have chiselled out a reputation for being formidable opponents on home plastic and have scored 15 goals in their last five matches in front of their own fans in Europe.

That would be enough to overturn their first-leg deficit and send them to a sensational success while pouring further misery on Tottenham fans who will be fretting over the return of their club’s injury crisis with key midfielders James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall both ruled out.

However, while they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 matches in all competitions – again, at Frankfurt – Tottenham usually find a way to score and have done so in each of their last eight outings.

Despite the injuries, there are enough quality players in the Tottenham ranks to ensure they ease into the final against either Athletic Bilbao or, almost certainly, Manchester United and while Bodo/Glimt are worth siding with to triumph on the night at 7/4 with Sky Bet, Spurs are no better than 1/10 with William Hill and others to qualify and a 2-1 defeat, which would see them go through, is 9/1 with multiple firms.

Dejan Kulusevski has not hit the highs he was enjoying before being sidelined through injury but he can smash in that all-important goal to ease Tottenham nerves at 7/2 with Paddy Power and Betfred.

United, 3-0 up after the first leg in Spain, have also been largely dismal in the league this season but they can also afford to lose and reach the final.

Bilbao, who had a player sent off early in the first leg and are beset by injuries, are 13/5 with Paddy Power, Bet Victor and Betfair to win on the night and 12/1 with bet365 to win 2-1.

• Sheffield United are 9/5 with Paddy Power and Betfair to win the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

• Cries of ‘fore’ rather than ‘four’ will be heard around the Philadelphia Cricket Club this week as the PGA Tour’s Truist Champions takes place on its Wissahickon Golf Course – standing in for Quail Hollow as it prepares to host next week’s PGA Championship major.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy will still be buzzing after his Masters success at Augusta and is 5/1 with BetMGM and Unibet to retain his crown while Corey Conners, Sam Burns and Aaron Rai are our respective each-way bets at 25/1, 40/1 and 45/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral.

Tottenham's clash with Aston Villa moved to help prepare for potential Europa League final vs Man Utd

Tottenham's clash with Aston Villa moved to help prepare for potential Europa League final vs Man Utd - Metro.co.uk
Description

Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa has been moved to help Ange Postecoglou’s side in their preparations for a potential Europa League final against Manchester United.

Spurs were scheduled to take on Villa on Sunday 18 May with United in action against Chelsea on Friday 16 May.

The Europa League final takes place on Wednesday 21 May in Bilbao.

The Premier League have now approved Tottenham’s request to reschedule the fixture at Villa Park to ensure they have the same preparation time as United – should both sides progress to the final.

Tottenham and United will now be in action on the same night against Villa and Chelsea respectively on the Friday, giving both sides four full days to prepare.

Villa vs Tottenham will kick-off at 7:30pm that night with Chelsea vs United given a new start time of 8:15pm, 15 minutes later than originally scheduled.

Tottenham and United are on course to meet at San Mames later this month after winning their semi-final first leg ties last week.

Spurs hosted Bodo Glimt in north London with Brennan Johnson, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke scoring to seal a 3-1 win.

Ange Postecoglou’s side must now finish the job away in Norway on Thursday night.

United meanwhile sealed a hugely impressive 3-0 victory away to Athletic Bilbao at the stadium that will host this year’s final.

Casemiro and a brace from Bruno Fernandes had United in control by half-time with the return leg to come at Old Trafford this week.

Should both sides reach the final, Postecoglou and Amorim may look to rest key players for the final three games of the Premier League season.

Currently sat in 15th and 16th respectively, United and Spurs have nothing to play for domestically with relegation places already decided.

Hopes of even a mid-table finish are long gone with bottom-half obscurity the best both sides can hope for after woeful league campaigns.

The Europa League and its previous incarnations has had an all-English final on two previous occasions with Tottenham triumphing over Wolves back in 1972.

Arsenal and Chelsea met in the final of the 2018-19 campaign with the Blues thrashing their London rivals 4-1.

Arsene Wenger calls for major rule change ahead of likely Man Utd vs Tottenham final

Arsene Wenger calls for major rule change ahead of likely Man Utd vs Tottenham final - Metro.co.uk
Description

Arsene Wenger has urged UEFA to ‘review’ Champions League qualification rules ahead of a probably Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham.

The 2025 Europa League final looks set to be an all-English affair between United and Spurs – two sides sitting in the bottom-half of the Premier League table.

Manchester United thumped ten-man Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie, while Tottenham beat Bodo-Glimt 3-1 to put one foot in the May 21 final.

The winner of the Europa League will automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League under UEFA rules but Wenger disagrees with the policy.

Since 2014 the Europa League winners have been given a spot in the following season’s Champions League but ex-Arsenal manager Wenger says this is ‘not right’.

The guidelines mean one of Manchester United and Tottenham, sitting 15th and 16th in the Premier League respectively, will likely be back in the Champions League next year.

Asked if it was ‘right’ for the winners of the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League, Wenger told beIN SPORTS: ‘No – they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League.

‘Especially when you’re in the Premier League where already five teams qualify. I think it’s something [for UEFA] to think about and to review.

‘On the other hand people will tell you that to keep the Europa League focused, interesting and motivated you need to give them that prize [of qualifying for the Champions League].’

The San Mames Stadium in Bilbao has been slated to host the Europa League final on May 24.

But with two English teams likely competing in the showpiece event, many fans have questioned whether the game should be switched to a venue more accommodating to fans of both clubs.

According to the BBC, however, UEFA have no plans to change the venue with the 51,000 home of Bilbao to stage the game, regardless of who makes it to the final.

Champions League and World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if his former club Manchester United went on to win the competition.

United put underwhelming domestic form to one side in 2018 when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

‘Manchester United is a club that knows how to win, even when the odds are stacked against them,” Schweinsteiger told Flashscore.

‘This season has had its ups and downs, but in Europe, knockout football is about mentality and heritage. United has that in their DNA.

‘I am happy and pleased that United won the first leg, but it is not done yet, the second leg is coming, this season is very tough for United. Obviously they have had some struggles.

‘The match against Athletic impressed me a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go all the way and lift the Europa League trophy. It’s about picking the form at the right time.’

Manchester United’s dismal Premier League campaign continued on Sunday as Ruben Amorim’s side were beaten 4-3 by Brentford.

Athletic Bilbao, sitting fourth in La Liga, shared a goalless draw with Real Sociedad.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with London rivals West Ham, while Bodo-Glimt had the weekend off.

Is West Ham vs Tottenham on TV? Team news and predicted lineups - Metro.co.uk
Description

Tottenham will fall to 17th in the Premier League table today if they suffer defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium in a 2pm kick-off.

It would put Spurs one place above the drop zone but they’re in no danger of going down with Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton already relegated.

Despite such a poor campaign in the top-flight, Spurs could save their season if they end their trophy drought by landing the Europa League title.

Spurs face Bodo/Glimt on Thursday in a semi-final second leg clash with a 3-1 lead – but before that – they face the Hammers in east London today.

Victory could take Spurs up to 14th – depending on today’s other results – and give the north Londoners a boost for their Europa League showdown.

Here’s everything you need to know about West Ham vs Tottenham including how to watch the game on TV, team news and predicted lineups.

Where to watch West Ham vs Tottenham? Kick-off time and TV channel

You can only watch West Ham vs Tottenham outside of the United Kingdom. It’s being shown across the world by the Premier League’s international broadcast partners.

You cannot watch West Ham vs Tottenham in the UK because it was not selected for television coverage. The match gets underway at 2pm today.

West Ham vs Tottenham team news

Key Tottenham duo James Maddison (knee) and Dominic Solanke (thigh) are highly unlikely to feature in today’s clash against West Ham.

Both players got hurt in the 3-1 Europa League semi-final first leg win overBodo/Glimt with Ange Postecoglou confirming Solanke is a ‘doubt’ for the game against the Hammers and admitting that Maddison is a ‘concern’.

Son Heung-min is edging closer to a return from his ankle problem but is also set to miss the West Ham clash.

Spurs will be without Lucas Bergvall and Radu Dragusin too, who are ruled out for the remainder of the season with their respective injury issues.

It’s safe to assume Spurs duo Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero will be rested as Postecoglou looks to prioritise the Europa League second leg.

West Ham, meanwhile, will not have Crysencio Summerville or Michail Antonio available due to injury while Edson Alvarez is a doubt for today.

Evan Ferguson is available for Graham Potter’s side, though, having been ineligible to face his parent club Brighton last time out.
