Description

Thomas Frank has provided an injury update on Micky van de Ven ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Tottenham enjoyed a productive midweek in the Champions League, earning a 2-0 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt to secure a top-eight spot and advance straight to the last 16.

Perhaps the only downside on the night was the absence of Pedro Porro and the aforementioned Van de Ven, who were not named in the matchday squad.

Spurs have already confirmed that Porro is facing a month on the sidelines, having come off at half-time last weekend in the 2-2 draw with Burnley.

Meanwhile, Van de Ven’s absence from Tuesday’s training and Wednesday’s European encounter was caused by a ‘minor’ issue.

The Dutch centre-back has been a pivotal player this season for Frank’s side, who host second-in-the-table City in the league on Sunday.

Asked whether Van de Ven could feature against Pep Guardiola’s side at the weekend, the Spurs boss said: ‘Micky is a minor one. It will be touch and go.

‘He was on the pitch yesterday and today but he’s touch and go.’

The latest injury news compounds what has been a nightmare month for Spurs, with Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Bergvall, Ben Davies and Rodrigo Bentancur all also picking up injuries over the course of January.

More Trending

Spurs have brought in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher and young Brazilian Souza to try and bolster their squad, but Frank conceded that his squad is looking far worse compared to when the transfer window opened.

‘We lost six or seven players. That’s crazy and some of them extremely unlucky like Lucas and Ben,’ he said. ‘Of course it’s weaker than when we started the 1st of January.

On the club’s transfer window, Frank added: ‘The fans just want the best for the club like I do, the owners and everyone in the club.

‘It’s fair to say though that the transfer window is not like Football Manager. Maybe it would be more boring if it was with less to talk about.’

Description

Micky van de Van is a doubt for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City due to a ‘minor’ injury issue, Thomas Frank confirmed.

Van de Ven scored his fourth league goal of the season as Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw away at Burnley last weekend.

However, the Dutch centre-back was absent from training on Tuesday, and has not travelled with the squad to Germany for Wednesday’s crunch Champions League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

And Frank confirmed that Van de Ven could also miss Sunday’s league fixture against City with the problem.

‘Micky has something minor and hasn’t travelled but could be available for City,’ the Spurs boss said on Tuesday.

There was more bad news for Spurs as Frank also confirmed that Pedro Porro was set for a month out with an injury after being taken off at half-time against Burnley on Saturday.

‘Pedro has a hamstring injury and will be out for four weeks,’ Frank confirmed.

‘Definitely not a help to any of us,’ Frank added on Porro’s injury.

‘Of course we prefer to have the best players out on the pitch. Any coach wants that and any team-mate wants that. That’s why we have a squad though.’

While Tottenham’s torrid league form has them sat 14th in the table, and only eight points off the drop, they have impressed in Europe and could secure an automatic spot in the last-16 with a win against Frankfurt.

Asked to explain the disparity between his side’s performances in the two different competitions, Frank responded: ‘First and foremost, I think tomorrow we have a great opportunity to secure a position in the top eight, which will be a very good result, a very good achievement.

‘We’re very, very positive and looking forward to that. So, that’s what we’re focusing everything we can on.

‘The other thing is that I think the performances for a while have been good in many ways, we just haven’t got on the right side enough to get the three points.

‘That’s what we’re working very hard on, sometimes you’re in that spell. The players are giving everything. But for me, tomorrow, it’s all about Frankfurt. All about the opportunity ahead of us.’

Tottenham make Thomas Frank sack decision before Champions League clash

Tottenham make Thomas Frank sack decision before Champions League clash - Metro.co.uk
Description

Thomas Frank is expected to remain in charge of Tottenham and will take training ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

The under-fire Spurs boss is battling to save his job after a miserable run of results culminated in Saturday’s demoralising 2-1 home defeat to WestHam.

Key figures at the north London club are weighing up whether to call time on his tenure, but it is understood that he has, for now, earned a stay of execution.

The weekend setback appeared to have pushed the former Brentford boss towards the exit door, with supporters chanting ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ following an eighth defeat in 14 matches.

Frank claimed to have ‘the trust of everyone’ in Saturday’s post-match press conference, but talks have taken place at Tottenham over whether Frank would remain in charge for tomorrow night’s vital European match.

The Danish coach took training on Sunday at the club’s Hotspur Way facility and will do so again this afternoon before facing the media.

Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has so far kept faith in Frank with this viewed as a transitional season, but the former Arsenal executive acknowledged this campaign had ‘fallen short’ of where they wanted to be in an open letter to fans on Saturday.

After loud boos serenaded Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for yet another occasion this season, Frank remained defiant.

Asked about the South Stand chants, Frank admitted: ‘Of course, I’ve probably had better times. It’s probably not the best time of course, but I understand, I’m the man in charge, so the blame will go to me. That’s fair.

‘No problem in that sense. As long as they are backing the players, doing everything they can to support them and drive them forward, that’s what we do and we will keep going forward.

‘If you’re not winning enough, we know you will not get enough support from the fans, but when we’re winning, it will change. When we start winning again, which we will do. I’m not in doubt of that.

‘I think you all saw the game today, we could easily have won this one 2-1. I think it’s no excuses, but also the reason we’re a little bit down to the bare bones with players and we also need some of the offensive players to score a goal or two.

‘All that is difficult for me to do like that and click with a finger, but I can promise that I’m sitting here, giving everything, every single day. I feel the trust from everyone and there’s only one way, we need to keep going.”

Frank was quizzed on his team selection being leaked on Friday night but brushed it off as ‘not optimal’ and again reiterated the backing of Venkatesham.

‘What I take out of that letter is that a club and an executive team with Vinai on top that are aligned and know this is a big transitional phase. It’s a super-tanker we’re turning in the right direction,’ Frank insisted.

‘There are a lot of good signs behind the scenes and also in some of the performances, but of course when you lose last-minute to one of your rivals, it is very emotional football and there will be noise.

‘That noise we need to keep out there (away) and get our head down and keep walking, keep doing the right thing.’

Xabi Alonso stance on taking Tottenham job revealed

Xabi Alonso stance on taking Tottenham job revealed - Metro.co.uk
Description

Xabi Alonso would turn down an approach from Tottenham if Thomas Frank is sacked, according to reports.

Frank’s future was placed in further doubt on Saturday after Spurs were beaten 2-1 at home by West Ham.

Spurs have registered just one win in their last seven Premier League matches, while they crashed out of the FA Cup last weekend following a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.

The Independent reports that Spurs are now seriously considering Frank’s position and the club’s hierarchy are ‘debating’ whether to keep the 52-year-old in place for the team’s Champions League game at home to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The report adds that the prospect of appointing Alonso has been discussed by Tottenham’s board, however, the 44-year-old ‘feels he will have better options over the coming months’.

Alonso, who has also been linked as a potential replacement for Arne Slot at Liverpool, was sacked by Real Madrid on Monday just seven months after joining the Spanish club.

Spurs supporters sang, ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’, towards Frank during the defeat to West Ham which has left the team 14th in the Premier League.

‘Of course, I’ve probably had better times, it’s probably not the best time of course,’ Frank said after the game when asked about the reaction from Spurs fans.

‘But I understand, I’m the man in charge. So the blame will go to me. That’s fair, no problem in that sense.

‘As long as they are backing the players, doing everything they can, to support them and drive them forward, that’s what we do, and we will keep going forward.

‘If you’re not winning enough, we know you will not get enough support from the fans. But when we’re winning, it will change, when we start winning again. Which we will do. I’m not in doubt of that.

‘I think also you can look a little bit at the performances. Let’s say the Bournemouth and the Villa and this game here, if the players stop running, or stop doing anything, or not working hard, and we are not the team that’s closest to winning, then you can say okay but I think the team is working very hard. And I still think, and I know it sounds a little bit crazy, that we are close to something very good, than further away.

‘I think you all saw the game today, we could easily have won this 2-1. I think it’s no excuses. But also the reason we’re a little bit down to the bare bones with players. And we also need some of the offensive players to score a goal or two.

‘All that is difficult for me to do like that and click with a finger. But I can promise that I’m sitting here, giving everything, every single day. I feel the trust from everyone and there’s only one way, we need to keep going.’

Liverpool urged to sign £43m Tottenham star after Burnley draw

Liverpool urged to sign £43m Tottenham star after Burnley draw - Metro.co.uk
Description

Liverpool have been urged to sign Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven after losing out to Manchester City in the race for Marc Guehi.

Arne Slot‘s side came close to signing Guehi for £35 million in the closing stages of the summer transfer window before Crystal Palace stopped the move.

Guehi is now finalising a £20m move to Manchester City this weekend having missed Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Liverpool remain in the market for a new central defender due to the uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future as the France international’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Chelsea TV commentator and talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy believes Van de Ven, who joined Spurs in a £43m deal from Wolfsburg in 2023, would be the perfect addition to Liverpool’s defence.

‘Here’s the thing, if I’m Liverpool I’m going after Van de Ven,’ Cundy told talkSPORT after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday.

‘That’s what I would do, I would absolutely go all out. They lost out on Guehi, Van de Ven is the next big thing at centre-half.

‘He’s perfect for Liverpool if they want to play a high line. I’m going straight after him.’

Meanwhile, Slot says he understands the frustration from Liverpool supporters after boos were heard at Anfield following the 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday.

‘In my head it wasn’t a boo, but in my head it was frustration as well,’ Slot said.

‘We are Liverpool and we play against Burnley – and we have to give them credit [for] how they defended, cleared balls off the line, all the things you want to see if you are a Burnley manager, players that try to do everything to prevent us from scoring – but if we, as Liverpool, are not disappointed anymore by having a draw at home against Burnley then something is completely wrong.

‘I completely understand the frustration. I can tell you I have the same and the players definitely have the same frustration as the fans have.’

Thomas Frank is facing mounting calls to be sacked following Tottenham’s 2-1 home defeat against struggling West Ham.

Fans turned on the under-fire former Brentford boss and chanted ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ after Callum Wilson struck a stoppage-time winner for relegation-threatened West Ham in a 2-1 victory.

The pressure on Frank had cranked up after an FA Cup exit to Aston Villa extended their terrible run of form, but the midweek arrival of Conor Gallagher offered a much-needed lift for the under-fire Danish coach.

Former Chelsea star Gallagher was thrown straight into the mix but his new team found themselves behind in the 15th minute following Crysencio Summerville’s deflected effort.

Cristiano Romero appeared to have at least earned a point when he equalised in the 64th minute but Callum Wilson provided an injury time sting in the tail to heap more pressure on the beleaguered Frank.

Current Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been installed as the favourite, just 24 hours after he accounted his intention to leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season.

The highly-rated Austrian, who has been tipped to take over at Manchester United as the club’s next permanent boss, guided the Eagles to FA Cup success last season, but had not agreed a contract extension at Selhurst Park.

Glasner, 51, arrived at Palace in 2024, having won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.

‘My decision has already been taken months ago,’ Glasner told a press conference.

‘I had a meeting (with Steve Parish) in the October international break, we had dinner and a very long talk and I told him I would not sign a new contract for Crystal Palace.

‘We agreed at that time that it was best to keep it between us, this is how confidential we work together, that we could keep it between us for three months.’

Glasner is glad to have been able to give everyone at the club a sense of ‘clarity’ moving forwards, with the Palace boss also confirming captain Marc Guehi was in the ‘final stages’ of completing his move to Manchester City.

Glasner added: ‘I told the team today the same, because I think it is now important to have clarity, because I don’t want this question at the players and ‘what is going on?’.

‘We had a very busy schedule, that is why we didn’t want to tell it just because we want the same, Steve and me, we want the best for Crystal Palace.’

Sir Alex Ferguson's choice to be appointed Man Utd interim manager revealed

Sir Alex Ferguson's choice to be appointed Man Utd interim manager revealed - Metro.co.uk
Description

Manchester United were incredibly generous leading up to Christmas and over the festive period, handing out points at home to Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves before draws away to Leeds and Burnley.

But as is stands, they are firmly within touching distance of the Champions League spots, just a point off fifth place.

Even after being knocked out of the FA Cup, there is still plenty to salvage from the season - if Carrick and his staff can make some quick fixes.

Solve Sesko's struggles up front

Benjamin Sesko has had some fleeting moments of promise this season but the jury is still out. At times, the Slovenia international has looked effective foil for Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, holding the ball up and linking play intelligently in the final third.

But questions over his physicality and unconvincing finishing remain. His performance against Burnley largely summed things up - scoring twice with two excellent finishes in the second-half but only after a thoroughly wretched display in the opening 45 where he could barely keep the ball under control.

Another goal against Brighton on Sunday means the 22-year-old has scored more under Darren Fletcher than he did under Amorim. A change of system and playing style has offered early promise.

Abandon the dreaded 3-4-3

It would serve as a huge shock were Carrick to persist with the system that became nothing but a cross to bear for Amorim.

Carrick very rarely deviated from a 4-2-3-1 formation at Middlesbrough, sometimes to his detriment, with a lack of a 'plan B' often cited as one of the reasons his failed to achieve promotion.

But this system appears to be perfectly suited to the Red Devils squad. Too often it has been a case of square pegs in round holes for United over the last year. Simplifying matters may be the interim boss' best course of action in the six months he has.

Reintegrate Mainoo and revive his United fortunes

As he may have been privately hoping for all season, Kobbie Mainoo has managed to outlast Ruben Amorim. With no Premier League starts to his name, it has been a miserable campaign but the change in system will surely open up a role in midfield for the 20-year-old.

United are desperately short of the controlling, calm presence Carrick once provided in the engine room. Who better to teach Mainoo the ropes.

It's a two-way street - United need inspiration in midfield and Mainoo needs to deliver if he is to stand any chance of forcing his way into Thomas Tuchel's England squad heading to the World Cup next summer. There can be no more excuses.

Unleash Fernandes in his old role

Restoring Mainoo to midfield and a shift in system could see Bruno Fernandes restored to the more advanced role where he has historically been at his prolific best in Manchester.

The Portugal international scored 44 goals and laid on 35 assists in his 97 games while Carrick served as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's assistant, averaging 0.81 goal contributions per game.

It might require some tinkering with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo also in the picture but the rewards could be enormous.

Fernandes has performed admirably in his deeper role this season but it is further up the pitch where he is most dangerous. Amid reports the captain has had enough of Old Trafford, keeping him happy is a top priority.

Thomas Frank responds to embarrassing Arsenal gaffe as Tottenham sack looms

Thomas Frank responds to embarrassing Arsenal gaffe as Tottenham sack looms - Metro.co.uk
Description

Thomas Frank was bizarrely seen drinking from an Arsenal-branded cup before Tottenham’s Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.

Fans in north London were quick to pick up on pictures showing Frank sipping from a cup with an Arsenal badge before kick-off at the Vitality Stadium.

The PR gaffe was the last thing Frank needed given he was already fighting to save his job and could yet face the sack after another disappointing result, this time a 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.

Mathys Tel put Spurs in front inside five minutes and Joao Palhinha looked set to have earned the visitors a point following home goals from Evanilson and Eli Junior Kroupi.

But Antoine Semenyo, playing in his final game for Bournemouth ahead of a January transfer to Manchester City, scored an injury-time winner to pile more pressure on Frank.

An eighth defeat of the season leaves Tottenham 13th in the Premier League, 21 points behind leaders and north London rivals Arsenal.

Frank described the defeat as ‘extremely painful’ and felt his team were ‘close’ to winning the game despite returning empty-handed.

‘That is very, very difficult, really painful,’ said Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager in the summer. ‘The players put in everything.

‘We started really well and went 1-0 up. I loved the mentality and character in the second half. There was one team out there and that was us.

‘To concede a goal five minutes into extra time is just so painful. It’s very, very hard to take.

‘The travelling fans were amazing today. They supported us throughout the game. The players are frustrated, I’m frustrated.

‘We are all hurt, the fans are hurt. That’s absolutely natural. That’s why football is emotional. It’s just very painful for everyone involved with Tottenham today.’

Asked about the bizarre images of him holding an Arsenal-branded cup, Frank said: ‘I definitely did not notice it. It would be completely stupid of me to take it if I knew.

‘It’s a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked about it. I would never do something that stupid.

‘I think we’re definitely going in the wrong direction if we need to worry about me having a cup with another logo of another club.

‘Of course, I would never do that. That’s extremely stupid.’

A large section of Tottenham fans are waiting for Frank to be sacked following the team’s poor form this season.

Tim Sherwood, the former Spurs boss, insisted he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Frank lost his job after the defeat to Bournemouth.

‘It’s a tough time for the Tottenham players and certainly a tough time for Thomas Frank right now,’ he said on Sky Sports.

‘They’re not winning games and they’re not playing good football. I worry for him, I really do.

‘I hope they give him more time but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got sacked. I hope he doesn’t go but I wouldn’t be surprised.’

Former Tottenham and England striker Martin Chivers dies aged 80

Former Tottenham and England striker Martin Chivers dies aged 80 - Metro.co.uk
Description

Tottenham have announced that club legend Martin Chivers has died aged 80.

Chivers is widely regarded to be among the greatest centre-forwards in Spurs’ history having scored 174 goals in 367 games for the north London outfit.

Between 1971 and 1973, Chivers was rewarded for his extraordinary goalscoring form at club level as he was capped 24 times by the England national team, netting 13 times for his country.

Chivers made his first steps in professional football with boyhood side Southampton before joining Tottenham for a then club-record fee of £125,000 in 1968.

After leaving Spurs, he would go on to represent Servette, Norwich, Brighton, Dorchester Town and Vard Haugesund in Norway, before calling time on his playing career in 1983 after a brief spell with Barnet.

While paying tribute to their prolific former marksman, Tottenham confirmed that Thomas Frank’s first-team squad would be wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for their upcoming clash with Bournemouth.

‘It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers,’ a club statement read.

‘We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends and former team-mates at this incredibly sad time.

‘Our players will wear black armbands during this evening’s fixture against AFC Bournemouth.

‘Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.’

Only four players sit above Chivers on Tottenham’s all-time top scorers list four decades on from his retirement, namely Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith and Son Heung-min.

Chivers’ goalscoring exploits helped Spurs win four pieces of silverware during his time at the club – two League Cups, the Anglo-Italian League Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1972.

The Southampton-born attacker scored twice in Tottenham’s League Cup final victory over Aston Villa in 1971. A year later, he completed another brace as the club defeated Wolves in an all-English, two-legged European final.

Despite average better than a goal every other game for England, Chivers never represented the Three Lions at major tournament.

Southampton joined Tottenham in paying tribute and offered their condolences to Chivers’ loved ones in a touching statement on social media.

‘We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former striker, Martin Chivers,’ the message read.

‘Born in the city, Martin made 189 appearances for the club, scoring 108 goals.

‘We offer our thoughts to Martin’s family and friends during this difficult time.’

Thomas Frank urged to resign as former Spurs star slams ‘shambles’

Thomas Frank urged to resign as former Spurs star slams 'shambles' - Metro.co.uk
Description

Thomas Frank has been urged to resign as Tottenham manager with the club in ‘shambles,’ according to former Spurs defender Ramon Vega.

Tottenham are 14th in the Premier League after back-to-back defeats and are back in action on Sunday against Crystal Palace as they look to arrest their slide down the table.

After an encouraging start to his first season in charge in north London, Frank is struggling for results and there is unrest among the supporters.

The Dane has been keen to point out that Spurs finished 17th in the top flight last season, so he is hardly taking over from a position of strength, despite their return to the Champions League via winning the Europa League.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘Honestly, I think we are in a transition phase, because yes, we are a Champions League club, but are we a Champions League club? We only qualified because we won the Europa League.

‘We didn’t qualify because we were one of the four or five best clubs in the Premier League last season. We finished 17th. And now we need to compete in the Champions League while we’re competing in the Premier League, which is the most difficult thing.’

Vega, who played for Spurs from 1997-2001 and won the League Cup in 1999, is completely unconvinced by Frank and feels he should be already stepping aside as he is not buying his excuse for poor results.

‘Frank, stop talking about last season,’ the former Switzerland international posted on X. ‘They finished 17th. You now have more fit players than Ange [Postecoglou] had last season, yet you’re still not better off. In fact, it’s a shambles.

‘At least Ange with no support made a miserable season into a wonderful ending for the fans by winning the European Cup and qualifying for the CL. You are now enjoying. So please do us a favour and resign, mate!’

It is not the first time this season that Vega has been critical of Frank, telling talkSPORT that he does not believe the Dane has the character to handle the dressing room of a big club.

‘He needs to manage the dressing room. Here the football is a psychological side,’ he said. ‘If he doesn’t control he dressing room. He can be as good as he wants, as nice as he is. But he doesn’t have the balls.

‘I don’t see Frank pretty much suitable for Spurs because he hasn’t got the balls, hasn’t got the character to do this.’

Who could replace Frank?

Vega had an idea for who could replace Frank and it is a familiar face at Tottenham, former Spurs striker Robbie Keane, who is currently in charge of Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

‘Now, the question is, who’s going to potentially be good for this?’ Vega said.

‘I have a suggestion. Robbie Keane. He’s done very well and has just beat Rangers [in the Europa League earlier this month].’

Keane has taken a unique path in management so far, starting as player manager at Indian side ATK in 2018.

He has held assistant roles with Republic of Ireland, Middlesbrough and Leeds before stints in charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv and now Ferencvaros since January.
