Tottenham captain Son Heung-min found himself employed as a piece of exercise equipment by a combat sports star during the club's pre-season tour of South Korea.

On Saturday morning Son announced that he would leave Spurs after a decade in north London to seek out a new challenge.

The 33-year-old has been linked with MLS side Los Angeles FC and is understood to favour a move stateside as his time in the Premier League comes to a close.

On Sunday Spurs face Newcastle in a pre-season clash at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, with a sell-out crowd of 66,000 fans expected to be in attendance.

However, before he can bow out in front of his countrymen Son and his Tottenham team-mates were treated to some pre-match festivities in the South Korean capital, including meeting a bonafide giant.

As the team were completing media duties, Son met up with combat sports star Choi Hong-man.

The 7ft 2in 2005 K-1 Seoul Grand Prix winner subsequently proceeded to lift Son into his arms and cradle the winger like a baby.

An embarrassed Son could only hide his laughter as the assembled photographers rushed to get a shot of the bizarre sight.

Choi was later seen play fighting with some of Son's team-mates including Pape Mata Sarr, who was trapped in a bearhug by the 350lb colossus.

Despite his extensive kickboxing background the 44-year-old Choi is most famous for his forays into MMA between 2006 and 2016.

During that time Choi fought arguably the two greatest heavyweight fighters of the era, Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko Cro Cop.

The 44-year-old was also scheduled to be Brock Lesnar's first MMA opponent when the WWE transitioned from the world of professional wrestling in 2007.

A pre-fight medical screening ultimately scuppered the bout however due to a tumor to his pituitary gland that was later removed through surgery.

The friendly between Spurs and Newcastle kicks off tomorrow at 12pm BST.

Speaking ahead of the game Tottenham boss Thomas Frank heaped praise on his departing captain.

'I think it's very clear,' Frank said. 'It's no secret that Sonny will start and will lead the team out as captain.

'I'm looking forward to that in many ways and if it is to be the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it in South Korea, his home country in front of his home fans.

'That could potentially be a beautiful ending. First and foremost with the biggest respect to Sonny and what he's done for the club.'

Dele Alli is 'BANISHED' from Cesc Fabregas' Como squad and 'forced to train alone'... with former Tottenham star, 29, 'considering retirement' just six months after joining Italian side - Daily Mail
Description

Dele Alli's football rollercoaster has taken another sad twist, with the former England international reportedly contemplating retirement after being left out of Como's pre-season plans ahead of the new Serie A campaign.

Dele, 29, joined the ambitious Italian side in January on an 18-month deal with the option of a further year, but his future in the game is now in serious doubt after a dramatic decline in fortunes.

Once regarded as one of Europe's brightest midfielders, the former Tottenham star has struggled to rediscover his form and fitness in recent years.

His most recent setback came in March when he was sent off just nine minutes into his long-awaited Serie A debut for Como in a clash against AC Milan at San Siro — his first competitive appearance in more than two years.

The red card, shown following a VAR review after a foul on Ruben Loftus-Cheek, drew a furious reaction from Como boss Cesc Fabregas and marked a turning point in Dele's brief Italian adventure.

He has since fallen out of favour and, despite returning to training after injury, has not been included in Fabregas' first-team plans for the 2025–26 season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the midfielder is now seriously considering retirement, less than four years after he left Tottenham in January 2022.

The Italian outlet claims Dele has been training separately from the senior squad alongside other out-of-favour players and is weighing up whether it is time to walk away from the game for good.

It marks a sobering chapter in a career once full of promise.

Dele burst on to the scene at MK Dons before earning his big move to Spurs in 2015, where he shone under Mauricio Pochettino.

He enjoyed a remarkable 2016–17 season, scoring 22 goals in all competitions and establishing himself as one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe.

The Englishman later played a key role in Tottenham's run to the Champions League final in 2019 and earned 37 caps for England, including appearances at the 2018 World Cup.

But a string of injuries, loss of form and off-field struggles derailed his rise.

His spell at Everton yielded little, and a loan move to Turkish side Besiktas in 2022 also ended without success after a serious groin injury sidelined him for almost a year.

Dele spoke candidly last year about his traumatic childhood, revealing in an emotional interview that he had been molested at the age of six, started smoking and dealing drugs by eight, and had attempted to take his own life during his darkest moments.

His move to Como was seen as a fresh start — a chance to relaunch his career in a more serene setting under the guidance of Fabregas.

Early signs were promising as he impressed in training camps and looked sharp following the winter break.

But the sending-off against Milan proved costly, and his time in Italy has since unravelled.

Dele still has a year left on his contract with Como, but it remains to be seen whether he will play again.

As things stand, one of English football's great early hopes faces the very real prospect of hanging up his boots before his 30th birthday.

Moment South Korean Tottenham fan bursts into tears after meeting James Maddison - as captain Son Heung-min and team-mates receive rapturous welcome - Daily Mail
Description

The sight of James Maddison was too much for one South Korean Tottenham fan to handle as Spurs touched down in the country to an incredible reception.

Owing to the near God-like status of Spurs skipper Son Heung-min in his homeland, Tottenham enjoy a huge following in South Korea and the level of affection for its players was evident as they continued their pre-season tour of Asia.

In scenes akin to the Beatles' 1964 arrival in the United States, Tottenham' stars were welcomed by a throng of passionate supporters desperate for pictures, autographs and in at least one case, to give a gift.

Such was the case for one supporter who broke down in tears after handing Maddison what appeared to be a large framed painting of the England international kissing the Europa League trophy the club sealed last term.

In a state of shock, the whimpering of the supporter, barely in control of his motor functions, did not stop even when posing for a photo with the 28-year-old.

Skipper Son unsurprisingly received the greatest reception but there was still plenty of affection to go around for the likes of Lucas Bergvall, Richarlison and Pedro Porro, who were all beckoned to sign autographs by the adoring masses.

Spurs made short trip from Hong Kong to Seoul after their 1-0 win over bitter rivals Arsenal at the Kai Tak Sports Stadium on Thursday.

The squad will face Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium on Sunday afternoon, which could be final time supporters get to see Son in a Tottenham shirt amid continued uncertainty over his future in North London.

The 33-year-old is wanted by MLS side LAFC and Spurs will not stand in his way if he wants to leave and a deal can be struck.

There has been no formal bid from the MLS club, but there has been contact to declare an interest in signing the forward as they search for a new star striker after losing former Arsenal and Chelsea centre forward Olivier Giroud to Lille.

LAFC are reported to be preparing a deal in the region of £15-20million which could be enough to tempt Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy into talks.

Son is into the final year of his contract in North London and having scored 173 goals in 454 games and lifted the Europa League in May his status as a legend in N17 is guaranteed.

He has been a commercial phenomenon and there was no prospect of him leaving before the pre-season tour to Asia.

Once they return, the question of his exit will become more urgent.

Spurs will take account of everything Son has done for the club. If it is a move he wants to happen they will try to help him achieve it, although Levy will not allow that to undermine any fee.

There is new chapter unfolding under Thomas Frank, who did little to quell the feeling Son would leave the club before end of the transfer window when he spoke earlier this month.

Tottenham jet off to Germany for their final pre-season fixture against Bayern Munich next week ahead of the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain in Udine on August 13.

Tottenham wonderkid Mikey Moore has joined Rangers on a season-long loan.

The talented 17-year-old became the youngest Spurs player to feature in the Premier League just over a year ago and has departed to continue his development.

The deal does not include an option or obligation to buy and Spurs view Moore, who moves north of the border with a glowing reputation, as a crucial part of their future.

Moore told Rangers' website: 'I'm excited to get going. As soon as I heard Rangers were interested and wanted me to come, it was a massive opportunity for me.

'I'm excited to be here and hopefully I can show the fans and everyone what I can do.

'I think with the new boss and the way that we play, it's a great place to be at the minute. It was a pretty easy decision for me to come here.'

The forward netted his first senior goal against Elfsborg in January - on Spurs' path to winning the Europa League - and broke club legend Jimmy Greaves' record as the youngest English scorer in a major European competition.

He will wear the No 47 shirt at Ibrox.

Rangers head coach Russell Martin said: 'His profile as a brave, aggressive attacking player is one that we were keen to add to the squad, and he is certainly a player who, despite his age, can make an impact on the team from day one.

'He is a player with huge potential, and it is testament to his quality that he has been entrusted by Spurs in both the Premier League and Europa League with such regularity over the last 18 months.'

Moore signed his first professional contract last August, on a deal running until 2027.

He made his breakthrough into Spurs' first team at the end of the 2023-24 campaign after being brought on as a substitute against Manchester City.

England Under-19 international Moore made 19 senior outings under Ange Postecoglou last season, scoring once and registering two assists.

James Maddison praised Moore after he dazzled in a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar last October, declaring: 'I thought we had Neymar on the left wing!'

Maddison added: 'He is fearless, [he has] that young, fearless mentality. He's a brilliant lad, he has bags of ability.'

Joao Palhinha 'will undergo Tottenham medical in Germany TODAY' as £44m former Premier League star closes in on surprise move to north London - Daily Mail
Description

Midfielder Joao Palhinha will undergo his medical in Germany on Friday ahead of his season-long loan move to Tottenham with a £26million option to buy, according to a report.

The 30-year old, who had interest from other Premier League sides including his former club Fulham, has agreed terms with the Europa League winners ahead of linking up with Thomas Frank's squad.

Tottenham have agreed to cover Palhinha's substantial wages as Frank looks to add the Portugal international's combative style to his new-look team.

Palhinha still has three years left on contract at Bayern after joining last year for £47.4million. He wanted to fight for his place but it became clear he was not part of Vincent Kompany's plans.

His arrival at Spurs is likely to accelerate the departure of Yves Bissouma.

The club still intend to add more signings while wing back Djed Spence is in discussions over a new contract. But Palhinha will be next through the door after completing his medical, according to The Athletic.

The 30-year-old Portugal international started just 10 league games for Bayern last season, with Vincent Kompany often favouring other options in midfield.

Palhinha was a revelation during his two years at Fulham, winning their Player of the Season award in 2022-23 and making 79 appearances in all competitions across his time at the club.

Palhinha came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon before loan spells with Moreirense, Belenenses and Braga, and his rise to prominence saw him become a regular for Portugal's national team.

As well as being their fourth summer signing, the deal would also mark Tottenham's second piece of business with Bayern this window.

Their first move of the summer was to seal a permanent deal for Mathys Tel, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs face Bayern in a pre-season friendly at the Allianz arena next Thursday, before taking Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup final on August 13, then beginning their Premier League season at home to Burnley three days later.

Tottenham 'in talks to sign £44m former Premier League star on loan' as Thomas Frank eyes surprise coup for his fourth summer signing - Daily Mail
Description

Tottenham's summer business under new boss Thomas Frank will reportedly continue with talks over what would be their fourth signing of the transfer window.

Spurs have already moved quickly to reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign, securing a £55million deal for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham, and strengthening their defence with Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai.

The north London club have already missed out on one midfield target, Morgan Gibbs-White, who had been expected to undergo a medical before a dramatic U-turn saw him sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest last week.

But it appears that setback has only accelerated efforts to add another figure to the spine of Frank’s team.

Now, Spurs are in advanced talks with Bayern Munich over a loan deal for former Fulham star Joao Palhinha, according to The Athletic.

Palhinha has struggled to find his footing in Germany since his £44m move last summer.

The 30-year-old Portugal international started just 10 league games for Bayern last season, with Vincent Kompany often favouring other options in midfield.

Palhinha was a revelation during his two years at Fulham, winning the club’s Player of the Season award in 2022-23 and making 79 appearances in all competitions.

Palhinha came through the ranks at Sporting CP before loan spells with Moreirense, Belenenses and Braga, and his rise to prominence saw him become a regular for Portugal’s national team.

As well as being their fourth summer signing, the deal would also mark Tottenham’s second piece of business with Bayern this window.

Their first move of the summer was to seal a permanent deal for Mathys Tel, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs face Bayern in a pre-season friendly at the Allianz arena next Thursday, before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup final on August 13, then beginning their Premier League season at home to Burnley three days later.

Description

Tensions boiled over in Arsenal’s pre-season clash with Tottenham on Thursday when Mikel Arteta was shoved by Spurs full back Pedro Porro.

The first-ever north London derby staged outside the UK took place in front of nearly 50,000 fans in Hong Kong, with Tottenham securing a 1‑0 win thanks to Pape Sarr’s stunning 45-yard lob just before halftime.

The Senegal midfielder picked the ball up after a mix-up in the midfield, spotted David Raya stranded, and punished him from close to the halfway line.

Later on, in a bizarre flashpoint during what was supposed to be a low-stakes friendly, Arteta was seen remonstrating with the referee from well beyond his technical area.

Arteta even encroached onto the pitch and found himself directly in the path of Porro, who was trying to take a throw-in.

The Arsenal manager's fellow countryman pushed him back into touch, prompting a heated exchange and swift intervention from the fourth official.

The incident sparked a social media frenzy, with many fans lamenting Arteta's antics.

One fan wrote on X: 'Arteta still standing on the pitch moaning at the ref during a friendly, comfortably the most unlikeable person in football.'

Another commented: 'Genuinely don’t think I’ve hated a manager more in my life.'

A third complained: 'Getting in the way of Porro taking a throw in. He’s such a p***k.'

A fourth said: 'Arsenal still the most unlikeable team in football.'

Arsenal's defeat by Tottenham was their first this summer, having beaten AC Milan 1-0 and Newcastle 3-2 in their other pre-season games so far.

The Gunners host Villarreal in their first pre-season game back from Asia on August 6.

After that, Arteta's side conclude their summer preparations against Athletic Club, before kicking off the Premier League season away at Manchester United.

Thomas Frank's 'charisma' will guide Tottenham to a top five Premier League finish next season, broadcaster Gordon Smart predicts on Mail podcast

Thomas Frank's 'charisma' will guide Tottenham to a top five Premier League finish next season, broadcaster Gordon Smart predicts on Mail podcast - Daily Mail

LISTEN: Why Mark Clattenburg belives the 'league is over' if Alexander Isak signs for Liverpool

A revitalised Tottenham Hotspur under former Brentford manager Thomas Frank will break into the Premier League's top five next season, broadcaster Gordon Smart has predicted.

Speaking to Mark Clattenburg on the Mail's Whistleblowers podcast, Smart claimed that the 'charisma and personality' of Frank, coupled with some shrewd summer transfer business, could see Spurs rebound back amongst the league's elite sides.

Under Australian manager Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham endured a disastrous league campaign last term, finishing just above the relegation zone in seventeenth.

The club have now turned to Danish manager Frank, who has built a solid reputation at Brentford for developing difficult to beat teams on a limited budget.

Adding to a sense of renewed optimism, Tottenham have been active in the summer transfer window, spending a club record £120million on Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel and Croatian defensive prodigy Luka Vuskovic.

'I have a funny feeling about Tottenham this year', Smart told the podcast.

'I don't know whether this is controversial, but I believe Tottenham could crack fifth – based purely on the personality and charisma of Thomas Frank.

'I think Frank will galvanise the fans and they've made some good business this summer. If they can crack on, it's achievable.

'I felt Ange just threw it away deliberately at Christmas last year. It became all about staying up with a focus on Europe.

'Bear in mind too, Heung Min Son was injured a lot of last season. His game is reliant on being so fit and quick. That's apparently back and he's one of the best strikers in the league.'

Former referee Clattenburg was sceptical of Gordon's prediction, arguing that while Frank could make Spurs 'more structured', going from 17th to fifth in one season is a mountain to climb.

'Tottenham have never recovered from losing Harry Kane's goals, Son isn't the same type of player.

'Whilst I get the new manager bounce and Frank's tactical nous, I can't see them going from 17th to fifth.'

Special guest and Chelsea influencer Rory Jennings was incredulous, calling Smart's analysis 'absolutely wild'.

Jennings said: 'They have missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White, Son, even if he gets back to full fitness, will probably never be the same player again.

'Seriously, if Thomas Frank takes Tottenham to fifth, he will be named manager of the year.'

Smart then doubled down on his bold prediction, believing Tottenham's rivals like Newcastle and Aston Villa will suffer drops in form.

Both Newcastle and Villa have had difficult transfer windows, with their spending hamstrung by FFP (Financial Fair Play).

'Look at the teams around Tottenham for that seventh, eight spot. I think Spurs will surprise people – just wait and see,' he added.

Tottenham's new 'beast' Luka Vuskovic: How Spurs pulled off a coup to get Croatian wonderkid, his trick of scoring from the centre circle and the decision Thomas Frank must now make

Luka Vuskovic: Spurs' new 'beast' with knack of scoring from 50 yards - Daily Mail
Description

There has been a great swell of anticipation about Luka Vuskovic’s arrival at Tottenham despite his tender years.

The Croatian teenager was signed for £12million in 2023 when only just 16, and having played an integral role for Hajduk Split’s Under-19s on their run to the final of the UEFA Youth League.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy moved quickly and stealthily to secure Vuskovic, beating competition from illustrious rivals including Manchester City, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

After six months on loan in Poland with Radomiak Radom and last season on loan in Belgium with Westerlo, where he scored seven goals from centre back - the pick of them an overhead-kick which was named goal of the season in the Belgian top flight - he has finally arrived in north London and is shaping up as quite a transfer coup.

At 18, his performances in training have been strong and in his first outing in Spurs colours he made a fine impression, with a goal and an assist within eight minutes of his introduction as a half-time substitute in a pre-season friendly against Reading a fortnight ago.

Those who have seen him breeze through the youth ranks for club and country – he won his first senior cap in June against the Czech Republic - were not surprised. All the usual caveats about young players and the perils of development apply, but Tottenham’s new boss Thomas Frank has a big decision brewing.

If Frank does not envisage Vuskovic featuring regularly in the first team – and there are a cluster of centre backs ahead of him in the pecking order, such as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin – there are Bundesliga clubs lining up to take him on loan.

It would be a shame if his incredible progress were to stall because he spends a season on the sidelines.

Vuskovic has always been mature beyond his years. Tall at 6ft 4in and strong, he is the epitome of a modern central defender, comfortable with either foot, mobile, strong in the air, with a determination to go forward and, his rarest gift, an eye for goal.

'Luka had a great impact here,' Westerlo’s sporting director Francesco Carratta tells Mail Sport. 'At 17, he came in like a player I’ve rarely seen - the professionalism he showed, constantly working, respecting the team, high on discipline, always wanting to improve.

'He is a beast. Literally, first in and last out. He would come in on free days to work in the gym. He would come on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, in the gym working out.

'Our facility is only for the first team but on occasions we give the gym to the second team and they met him in there and they all look up to him. He is a guy with great personality, so friendly and approachable. I can only speak highly of him as a person and a professional.

'He doesn’t cheat, that’s the thing. You have many talented players who try to cut a corner, but he doesn’t cheat himself or the team, he puts in the effort so that’s something I respect and appreciate.'

On the pitch at Westerlo, Vuskovic was no less eye-catching and he proved an instant hit with supporters as the club narrowly missed out on a European play-off .

'He is a natural talent,' says Carratta. 'Physically very gifted, big, strong and unbelievably good on the ball. This gives him the quality to score goals, it is easy for him. He feels where to be and he has the quality to find the net. This is a quality, not something you can teach.'

Vuskovic hails from a footballing family. His father Danijel and grandfather Mario played professionally. His brother, also Mario, aged 23, was at Hamburg when hit with a four-year doping ban after testing positive for EPO. He cannot play until next year and his contract was terminated, but Hamburg promised to take him back when the ban ends.

Croatia’s Under-19s boss Marijan Budimir played alongside Danijel and coached Luka through the youth ranks of Hajduk Split.

'His father and I grew up together,' Budimir, 44, tells Mail Sport. 'We played in Hajduk Split from the Under-14s to the first team, the two centre backs or two in the back three. Danijel was a very good player, but Luka and Mario are better. Football was not always the most important thing for their father.' Laughing, he adds: 'He was young.'

Luka has suffered no such distractions, laser-focused, making accelerated progress, always playing in older age categories. Budimir says: 'When he was 13, he was playing with the Under-15s and when he was 15 he was playing with the Under-19s, so it has always been clear he has a big talent.

'His father was a big talent and his brother is a big talent, so from a young age people saw Luka and thought he could be a big prospect.'

Hajduk Split swept past Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan before losing to AZ Alkmaar in the final of the UEFA Youth League, an Under-19s Champions League, in 2023, so the secret was out about the 16-year-old in central defence.

'Luka, born in 2007, played in that team with guys who were three years older,' says Budimir. 'Everybody noticed, not only Spurs. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, everybody wanted him.

'Technically he is very good, with both feet. He is not typical of the centre backs from 20 years ago. He is a modern centre back who can create. The coaches who want to play will love him. He is very calm with the ball. In front of 100 people or 80,000 people he will play the same. For him to be at Spurs at such a young age is good. He has a good mentality, so he will improve quickly in England.

'When the coach sees him he will love him because his technique is very good. But we will see now how he manages with the big stars. Spurs will find the best solution for him, if that is to play immediately or go somewhere else because for younger players the most important thing is to play.'

Tottenham has been a happy home for Croatian players in the past. Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Ivan Perisic and Vedran Corluka all enjoyed varying successes in N17.

'I hope Luka will have a career as good as the other Luka,' smiles Budimir, who puts Vuskovic's goal knack down to instinct, on top of all his other qualities. 'If you have good delivery, he will find the ball. He has a sense of where the ball will come, an instinct.

'Twice, for the Under-19s and Under-17s at Hajduk Split, I saw him score from inside the centre circle. He saw the goalkeeper a little out of his goal and scored from the centre. I asked him how he saw the chance, and he said to me, "I always look".'

Carratta was in the stadium when Vuskovic unleashed his overhead-kick on Boxing Day in a 4-3 defeat at Club Brugge. Alfie Devine, also on loan at Westerlo from Spurs, found the net in the game too.

Tottenham charted their progress with care, loans chief Andy Scoulding checking in on a weekly basis with Carratta and staff at the Belgian club issuing monthly physical, medical and technical bulletins on both players.

Vuskovic was invited to the Pro League’s end of season awards dinner to collect the goal of the season prize. The dress code did not appear to have an impact on him.

'You had to wear a suit and tie,' recalls Carratta. 'But Luka is only busy with football, he doesn’t care about fashion or the glitz and glamour, so everybody went in a suit and tie, and he went in his street clothes. It just shows how down to earth he is.'

There is a bright future ahead. Croatia are excited about the idea of Vuskovic maturing into a natural central defensive partner for Josko Gvardiol, but he is still young and developing.

'You have to be humble and cannot compare the level of the Belgian league to the Premier League,' says Carratta. 'To say it will be easy for him is not right. I am convinced he can have an impact, but he needs to be given time.

'You cannot expect an 18-year-old boy to dominate in the Premier League because he dominated in Belgium. That’s not fair to him either, but if Spurs are patient he can become a good player.'
