Tottenham plans to sign Jonathan David delayed by Premier League safety concerns

Tottenham Hotspur are facing new delays in their efforts to plan for the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

While Igor Tudor’s side remain locked in a relegation battle, the recruitment team will remain unable to make clear targets to strengthen their squad at the end of the season.

A crucial Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on 22 March could prove decisive, as the winning side will hand themselves a huge boost in the scrap for survival.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs’ Premier League status will be crucial to luring some of their top targets.

Having recently been linked with the likes of Juventus’ Jonathan David, Tottenham are making ambitious transfer plans, but cannot act until their survival is confirmed.

Tottenham transfer plans delayed by relegation battle

Football Insider revealed on 21 March that Tottenham are interested in signing David from Juventus as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.

However, should they suffer relegation from the Premier League, the striker will almost certainly be out of reach, as will most of their other key targets.

As a result, Spurs are delaying their transfer plans until there is a more clear expectation over their future, and the Nottingham Forest clash could be key.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Well, Tottenham are long-term admirers of Jonathan David.

“They were interested before he made that free transfer move to Juventus last summer. He’s under contract until 2030 so it won’t be an easy deal to do if they’re interested.

“It’s hard to know what Tottenham’s transfer plans are right now because they don’t know what league they’re going to be in as well.

“They’re going to have to delay things until maybe closer to the end of the season when their situation will become more clear.

“So a lot will depend on that if they’re able to potentially make a move for a player like Jonathan David.”

Tottenham growing confident in battle against relegation

In the wake of their 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace on 5 March, it looked almost inevitable that Spurs would be relegated as the weakest side in the battle.

Since then, Tudor has turned around their form and picked up a point against Liverpool at Anfield before beating Atletico Madrid, despite ultimately losing on aggregate.

Football Insider revealed on 21 March that Tudor now has the backing of his players with a growing feeling of positivity around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite initial fears that the manager had lost the dressing room after disagreements with players, he has finally got everybody pulling in the same direction.

A positive result against Nottingham Forest could highlight the improved feeling around the club, although a defeat would squash any new ambitions.

Keith Wyness: Vinai Venkatesham ‘wrong’ to slam Daniel Levy as Tottenham civil war erupts

Keith Wyness: Vinai Venkatesham ‘wrong’ to slam Daniel Levy as Tottenham civil war erupts - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur chief executive Vinai Venkatesham should not have publicly slammed Daniel Levy’s time at the club.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Venkatesham was not “best advised” before giving his assessment of Levy’s tenure.

Venkatesham claimed at a meeting with the Fan Advisory Board that an internal review has taken place about where Spurs fell short during Levy’s time as executive chairman, and that the club are under pressure to comply with financial rules.

Levy stood down from his role in September 2025 after nearly 25 years at the club, with Venkatesham taking charge of day-to-day operations.

Under Levy, Spurs became a financially stable club, and made progress on the pitch, but relegation from the Premier League and a huge reduction in revenue is a possibility this season.

Tottenham need ‘better plan’ and ‘new approach’ next season

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the Lewis Family would be more to blame than Levy.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Venkatesham was trying to separate the current administration from Levy.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “In terms of blaming Levy, the Lewis’ have been there as many years as Daniel Levy has been there, and they’ve been the ones providing the money, so they’ve been aware of everything that Daniel’s been doing.

“So it’s very hard now for Vinai to come around and say he’s going to blame Daniel Levy because the Lewis family were right there all every step of the way and sanctioned the spending. That’s where the money’s been coming from.

“So I find that hard to accept. I get that sort of politics of it and that he’s trying to separate the administration from Daniel Levy, but I’m afraid the fans aren’t stupid and they will know that it’s still the same owners in theory, the Lewis family, and it’s just a new operating arm to try and do that.

Big Six: Wages-to-Turnover Comparison (24/25)

*Projected based on latest interim data or UEFA financial reports.

“And I think that he’s probably not been best advised to take this sort of line of attack. And I think he would have been better advised to have just kept his head down, tried to avoid relegation, and then come out with a better plan and a new approach for next season.”

Igor Tudor one game away from Tottenham sack

Sources have told Football Insider that Spurs will sack manager Igor Tudor if they fail to beat Nottingham Forest next in the Premier League.

Whilst Tudor’s side claimed a point at Liverpool and victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, defeat against Nottingham Forest would leave Spurs in greater danger of Premier League relegation.

Nottingham Forest would leapfrog Spurs in the table with a win, and extend their winless streak in the Premier League to 13 games.

Igor Tudor: Tottenham boss has players’ backing after ‘shift’ to dampen fears he’d lost the dressing room

Igor Tudor now has the backing of his Tottenham Hotspur players after back-to-back positive results, sources have told Football Insider.

Tudor’s side followed up on their 1-1 draw against Liverpool by beating Atletico Madrid 3-2 in midweek, despite being eliminated from the Champions League.

Those results have led to an increased feeling of optimism around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they will now look to build on their recent displays.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Tudor has now won over the players and hopes to keep up their recent improvements.

However, the boss remains under intense pressure from the board, and he must continue in this vein of form or Tottenham will be looking for a new manager.

Igor Tudor secures players’ backing after initial concerns

Football Insider revealed on 15 March that Tudor could lose the Tottenham dressing room with multiple players believed to be concerned about his management.

However, he has since been given time to get his ideas across and there has been a noticable turn of form, with players now backing the boss.

Tottenham remain in a close-fought relegation battle, but having the players, manager and fans all pulling in the same direction will come as a major boost.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “A good thing for Tudor and Tottenham is there’s been a sort of shift in the mood in the last week.

“They got that great point at Anfield. Then obviously they got that win against Atletico Madrid, although they did crash out of the Champions League.

“It seems like he’s getting a tune out of the players and getting them on side after a really difficult start.

“If Tudor can continue on this upward curve it’ll obviously give him a great chance to stay in charge until the end of season.

“His job is now fully focused on Premier League survival, they’ve got no Champions League distractions, and a win on Sunday would be huge for Tottenham.”

Could Tudor still be sacked by Tottenham?

Despite securing the backing of his players and beginning to show a turnaround in results, Tudor remains under intense pressure from the Spurs hierarchy.

Football Insider revealed on 20 March that Tudor could soon be sacked by Tottenham and the club are taking it one game at a time to assess his position.

Up next, they will face a relegation six-pointer at home against Nottingham Forest, where a defeat would see them drop further towards the Premier League’s bottom three.

Failing to win that game would pile the pressure straight back on to the manager, as Spurs cannot afford to suffer relegation from the Premier League.

The interim boss’ future will largely depend on Spurs’ league performance, and failure to move away from the relegation zone will see Spurs look elsewhere.

Jonathan David: Tottenham set sights on deal to sign Juventus star

Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on a deal to sign Juventus star Jonathan David as they step up plans to sign a new striker, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old moved to Juventus from Lille last summer but has so far failed to stake his claim for a regular position in the starting XI.

After 39 appearances across all competitions, the Canada international has scored just seven goals and provided five assists, leading to suggestions he could move on.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Tottenham are among the clubs keeping a close eye on his performances.

Tottenham hope to sign a new striker this summer, and sources say David has been on their radar for a while, but a deal may prove difficult to pull off.

Tottenham set sights on move to sign Jonathan David

Football Insider revealed ahead of the mid-season transfer window that Tottenham are interested in signing David and he ranks highly on their shortlist.

Despite what has been a difficult season since his move to Juventus, the striker remains highly rated by a number of clubs across Europe.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers, and while Dominic Solanke remains their first-choice striker, it is a position they would like to improve in the summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Tottenham are long-term admirers of David. They were interested before he made that free transfer to Juventus last summer.

“He has struggled, it’s fair to say, since his arrival as Juve aren’t having the best of seasons. He’s scored seven goals in 39 appearances, just 16 starts in Serie A.

“But he’s under contract until 2030 so it won’t be an easy deal to do for any club interested in signing Jonathan David.

“A lot could depend on where Juventus find themselves in the summer, if they’re in the Champions League or not.

“If they are in the Champions League, it will give them more money to spend to strengthen their squad and that could mean David is pushed out.”

Could Dominic Solanke leave Tottenham this summer?

Alongside Spurs’ ambitions of signing another striker in the summer transfer window, speculation has emerged that Solanke could be set to leave the club.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 15 March that Solanke is a target for Newcastle, who are also looking to bolster up front.

Discussions could be taking place behind the scenes about the striker’s long-term future, with a number of clubs likely keeping tabs on his situation.

Solanke has made just 11 Premier League appearances so far this season after spending a lengthy spell on the sidelines, leading to frustrations.

Meanwhile, if Spurs are relegated from the Premier League, a number of their first-team stars are expected to search for moves elsewhere.

Tottenham make new Igor Tudor sack plan

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 20 March that Tudor will be sacked by Tottenham if they suffer a defeat against Nottingham Forest.

One point current separates Tottenham from West Ham in the relegation zone, with Forest between them and only out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Tudor was expected to be sacked if Spurs had lost to Liverpool, but a draw at Anfield saw him given a stay of execution, and decisions will now be made game-by-game.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Look, for Tudor right now, it’s game by game for him and Tottenham.

“The speculation over his future isn’t going to go away. If things didn’t go well for Tudor and Tottenham on Sunday, that’ll just ramp up even more.

“Right now, if Tudor can continue on this upward curve it’ll obviously give him a great chance to stay in charge until the end of season.

“A win for Tottenham would be huge for them and move them further clear of Forest, but a defeat and we’ll be back to the starting point again.

“For Spurs and Tudor right now they’re just taking game by game and hopefully the outcome of the Forest game will have a huge bearing on this future.”

Who will become the next Tottenham manager?

Despite pressure building on Tudor’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the plan remains to look for a new manager come the end of the season.

Much will depend on whether Spurs can survive the relegation battle, but they are assessing candidates including the likes of Roberto De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 19 March that De Zerbi is the favourite for Tottenham given his Premier League experience.

De Zerbi was sacked by French club Marseille in February after 19 months in charge and would be prepared to come in immediately at the end of the season.

Talks are already believed to be taking place with multiple candidates, although a decision will not be made until their Premier League status is secure.

Tottenham: Igor Tudor will be ‘sacked’ if Nottingham Forest win ‘crucial’ clash

Tottenham: Igor Tudor will be ‘sacked’ if Nottingham Forest win ‘crucial’ clash - Football Insider
Description

Igor Tudor has relieved pressure on his position as Tottenham Hotspur manager but will be sacked if they suffer a defeat against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Spurs were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid, but a 3-2 victory in the second leg thanks to a late Xavi Simons penalty has lifted the mood.

This time last week, the toxic atmosphere in North London had reached new heights, but positive results against both Liverpool and Atletico have inspired optimism.

However, former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Tottenham’s visit to Nottingham Forest will either make or break Tudor’s time in charge.

With just one point separating them from the bottom three, a defeat to one of their relegation rivals could force Tottenham to look for a new manager in desperation.

Tottenham make new Igor Tudor sack plan

Brown told Football Insider following the result against Liverpool that Tottenham are prepared to stick with Tudor and hope he can turn around their fortunes.

A disastrous run of four straight defeats following his appointment meant he would have been sacked if they had lost at Anfield, but they are now two without a loss.

Another win against Forest on 22 March will steer Tottenham away from the danger zone and provide a huge boost, but a defeat will prove nightmarish.

“Tudor needs a win, there’s no doubt about that,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They’ve shown some positive signs over their last couple of games, including against Liverpool where they looked much better than they had been before.

“If he has to take a draw against Forest, I think he would take it and keep things as they are.

“But a defeat in that game means it would be inevitable that he will be sacked because then they’ll be in real, serious danger of going down.

“Realistically, the Forest game is going to be crucial to their season and could be a must-win for him, because then all of a sudden things start looking up.

“It depends on how the game goes for them as well, if they’re under the cosh and battling to hold on, coming out with a point wouldn’t be the end of the world.

“But a win is really what they need, and if they don’t get one, I can see Tottenham making a decision about the manager because of the position it will put them in.”

Who could step up to replace Tudor at Tottenham?

Should Tudor be sacked, Spurs plan to hire a boss who has experience dealing with relegation battles in the Premier League in a last-ditch attempt to steer them away from safety.

Football Insider revealed on 15 March that Tottenham had considered Sean Dyche as an emergency replacement, but the boss is not keen on stepping in.

Dyche was sacked by Nottingham Forest in a surprise move after struggling to steer them away from the drop zone, with Vitor Pereira brought in to replace him.

Other managers linked with the Spurs role include the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Harry Redknapp, with the experience pair not ruling out a return if needed.

However, the priority as things stand is to stick with Tudor until they feel they have no other choice, with the Nottingham Forest game now crucial to their season.

Tottenham: Stefan Borson insists Daniel Levy isn’t to blame as internal review claims analysed

Description

Tottenham: Stefan Borson rubbishes ‘nonsense’ Daniel Levy claim by Vinai Venkatesham

Tottenham Hotspur were well run during Daniel Levy’s time at the club, despite chief executive Vinai Venkatesham’s recent claims.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s common for management teams to place the blame on the previous regime.

The Telegraph reported on 12 March during a meeting with Tottenham’s Fan Advisory Board earlier this month, Venkatesham claimed an internal review had highlighted several key areas in which the club had fallen short under Levy, who left his role as executive chairman last September.

The CEO also insisted alleged mistakes during the Levy era mean Spurs are under pressure to comply with the financial rules and must sell players.

Although Levy faced criticism from fans during his time at the club, it was accepted Tottenham were financially well run under the 64-year-old.

Why Tottenham were ‘well run’ under Daniel Levy

Deloitte’s 2026 Money League revealed Tottenham’s revenue reached £565million last season in what turned out to be Levy’s final campaign with the club.

That was backed by £277m of commercial income as Spurs continue to cash in on opportunities at their 62,850-capacity stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur Financial Status

Figures based on Tottenham Hotspur Annual Report 2024, UEFA Financial Reports 2025, and Deloitte Football Money League 2026.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed Venkatesham’s claims about the Levy era.

“Well, it’s like when every new manager that comes into these situations says the players aren’t as fit as they need to be,” said Borson.

“It’s one of these things that people say that everybody likes to blame the historic management team for the current situation. The reality is that Spurs have been financially very well run. I don’t think anybody can argue with that.

Big Six: Wages-to-Turnover Comparison (24/25)

*Projected based on latest interim data or UEFA financial reports.

“I think sources close to Daniel Levy apparently pointed out that in his 20 years, it’s 18 out of 20 years of qualifying for European competition.

“Clearly, on top of that, they built the stadium, so I think it’s just nonsense to suggest that the club was not efficiently run, a financial sense, in the Daniel Levy era.”

Why Tottenham are not in concerning financial position

Borson insisted it’s normal for clubs to make mistakes in the transfer market and it’s not just Tottenham that have found themselves in that situation.

“If you make loads of mistakes in the transfer market and you buy players who are not worth what you paid for them and that can’t easily be sold, then clearly at some point that comes back to bite you, but that’s any team,” said Borson.

“That has been the situation with Manchester United. It has been the situation with Chelsea, writing players off. It has been the situation with Arsenal. It is probably the situation with Manchester City right now.

“If I look at the Manchester City squad, you can see there are players there where they’re going to have to take a loss, so that is normal.

“I don’t believe that Spurs are in a particularly bad position from that perspective, or that Daniel Levy is to blame for it.”

A bigger threat is Tottenham’s fight against relegation this season following their poor recent run of form.

Igor Tudor’s side sit just one point above the relegation zone after 30 matches, having failed to win any of their past 12 Premier League games.

Tottenham: Keith Hackett says Julian Alvarez did not foul Xavi Simons before Atletico Madrid goal

Tottenham: Keith Hackett says Julian Alvarez did not foul Xavi Simons before Atletico Madrid goal - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur star Xavi Simons was not fouled by Julian Alvarez in the build-up to Atletico Madrid’s first goal in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Former PGMOL chief and FIFA referee Keith Hackett has exclusively told Football Insider that referee Daniel Siebert made the right call to play on as Atletico broke forward to score.

Simons was lining up a shot from the edge of Atletico’s box in the 47th minute before he went down under challenge from Alvarez.

Siebert waved play on, despite the Dutchman’s protests, and a slick counter-attacking move saw Ademola Lookman find the Argentine striker on the edge of the Spurs area as he swivelled and fired the ball past Guglielmo Vicario.

The game ended 3-2 to the hosts ahead of Tottenham’s huge next match against Nottingham Forest, but they still felt hard done by that Alvarez’s strike was allowed to count.

Keith Hackett explains that Xavi Simons went to ground too easily

Simons was the hero for Spurs on the night as his brace fired Igor Tudor’s side to a much-needed 3-2 win, even though they lost 7-5 on aggregate.

Randal Kolo Muani had put the hosts ahead before Alvarez’s equaliser, with Simons’ two goals coming between another Atleti leveller from David Hancko.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Alvarez on Simons incident, ex-refs chief Hackett insisted that the referee had made the correct call to play on, and VAR were right not to get involved.

He said: “Football is a contact sport and I do think that the Spurs player went to ground too easily.

“I support the referee’s decision not to blow for a foul and to allow play to continue. Correct to allow the goal to count.”

What did Tudor say about the Simons incident?

Tottenham boss Tudor will have been happy with his side’s performance, but he challenged referee Siebert’s decision to play on after the challenge by Alvarez.

The Croatian manager explained his view on the incident to the media after the match, saying: “The foul on Xavi…the referee didn’t give us an obvious foul. That changed the game a little bit.”

In the end, his team did enough to win the game and give themselves a huge confidence boost, ahead of what can only be described as a relegation six-pointer against Forest this weekend.

Tottenham next manager race takes twist as Marco Silva betting odds slashed

Tottenham Next Manager Race Takes Twist as Marco Silva Betting Odds Slashed - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to appoint Marco Silva in the summer after his odds of taking over were slashed.

The Fulham manager is expected to leave at the end of his contract this summer, marking the end of a five-year tenure at Craven Cottage.

Various clubs have reportedly sounded out the 48-year-old, but the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium currently looks to be his likeliest destination.

There is still much to contend with this season for the Lilywhites, however, with the threat of relegation still very much alive.

Interim Tottenham manager Igor Tudor is expected to manage the team until the end of the season, with there currently being just a one-point buffer to the drop zone.

Marco Silva to Tottenham odds slashed

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Nottingham Forest are considering Silva in the summer, with the manager’s future perhaps set to be decided by the relegation battle.

It has felt for some time like the Portuguese manager was due for a move to a club with more financial power, after several strong seasons with Fulham.

The Cottagers had been known as a ‘yo-yo club’ in the years before Silva, coming up and going down again in four consecutive seasons under Scott Parker.

But since coming up as champions in the 2021-22 season after appointing the 48-year-old, they have stayed in the Premier League.

And they have not just survived every season, Fulham have established themselves as a mid-table Premier League team, finishing as high as 10th in the 2022-23 season.

This season could still be the one in which they record their best top-flight finish since 2012, with only one point separating Silva’s side from ninth.

It looks as if a key decision awaits decision-makers in the summer, however, with their manager ready for a new challenge.

One major bookmaker has slashed Silva’s odds of taking over at Tottenham to 10/1 in recent hours, while Mauricio Pochettino remains the favourite at 2/1.

What Silva has said about Fulham future

Silva has been tight-lipped on his future, with contract negotiations likely still ongoing behind the scenes.

Fulham will attempt to convince the 48-year-old to sign a new deal until the final moments, although they may well be fighting a losing battle.

Speaking in November, he said: “They [the Fulham board] know I love being at the club, they know I’m not an easy guy to deal with all the time. They recognise the job everyone is doing.

“The will and desire is there, let’s see what the news will be, nothing new for now. I know what the club needs to develop, to grow. We have to all be on the same page to help the club progress.”

A lot of time has passed since then, and there appears to have been little progress made. With several clubs looking for a new manager this summer, Silva’s decision may already have been made.

Tottenham: Roberto De Zerbi ‘favourite’ to be appointed the club’s next manager

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to appoint Roberto De Zerbi to become the club’s next permanent manager.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the club could already be holding talks with candidates.

De Zerbi was sacked by French club Marseille in February after 19 months in charge following two seasons at Brighton in the Premier League.

The 46-year-old led Brighton to Europa League qualification during his first season in charge, reaching the last 16 stage in the 2023-24 campaign.

Igor Tudor will remain Spurs manager until the end of the season before the club announces a permanent successor to Thomas Frank.

Roberto De Zerbi ‘would make sense’ for Tottenham

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – doesn’t think there is anybody else out there for the Spurs job aside from De Zerbi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the Italian is the “favourite” for the job.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, as you say, there’s been a lot of rumours that Spurs have already been having discussions out in the marketplace.

“Harry Redknapp even going public to say that he spoke to Daniel Levy, and he would have been called back. Well, that’s great, Harry, because no one will ever know if that was going to be the case or not.

“Good old Harry for that one. But no, think realistically, if it was to be anybody, I think De Zerbi is the favourite. And I think he would be the one that makes most sense. I don’t think there’s anybody else.”

New Pedro Porro plan amid Man City interest

Sources have told Football Insider that Spurs want to offer Pedro Porro a new contract to remain at the club at the end of the season.

Any new deal would depend on Spurs remaining in the Premier League, but the club do not want to lose the defender to Manchester City.

Man City are interested in re-signing Porro, and could take advantage of Spurs’ situation if they suffer relegation to the Championship.
