Description

Tottenham are without Mohammed Kudus for tonight’s visit of Copenhagen in the Champions League.

However, Djed Spence is fit enough for the bench.

The pair started in the weekend defeat to Chelsea but have picked up knocks and took no part in open training with their team-mates on Monday afternoon.

However, Thomas Frank suggested the issues were not serious, but only one is named in the matchday squad.

The Spurs boss said: "Djed and Mo got a knock. They could and should be available for tomorrow."

Lucas Bergvall has been ruled out of this match and Manchester United's visit to north London on Saturday with concussion.

Frank does have Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero back after they came off the bench against Chelsea and both return to the starting lineup here.

The midfield options are becoming increasingly thin, with Archie Gray still out with a calf issue and Bergvall now unavailable.

Frank has repeatedly turned to the midfield partnership of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur, but Palhinha has played 90 minutes in all five of Spurs' matches since the international break and is rested.

Spurs need Xavi Simons to find form and Frank will hope this is the game where it happens, while Wilson Odobert is handed a start.

Tottenham are back on the Champions League stage tonight as they host FC Copenhagen at the halfway stage of this season's League Phase. After scraping draws on the road against Bodo/Glimt and Monaco, Spurs remain unbeaten in the competition and will be seeking to follow up their narrow win over Villarreal on matchday one to make it two wins from two at home.

However, Thomas Frank have struggled on their own patch of late and the loss to Chelsea at the weekend was a new low for so many reasons and therefore, supporters will be demanding a much improved performance in addition to a result. Changes are expected ahead of the upcoming game with Manchester United, though Mohammed Kudus and Djed Spence are doubts after missing training yesterday with knocks.

The visitors, meanwhile, began their European campaign with a credible draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen, but have not picked up a single point since.Follow Tottenham vs Copenhagen LIVE below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert analysis from Matt Verri at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!

Tottenham must tonight shake off a miserable derby defeat as they face Copenhagen in a key Champions League test.

A meek 1-0 home loss to rivals Chelsea at the weekend saw Spurs muster a record-low xG and saw the team booed off at both half-time and full-time.

Manager Thomas Frank has acknowledged his and his team’s failings in attack which have seen them scrape one win and two draws so far, while pleading for more patience in the stands, and more dropped points could spell the end of their hopes of finishing in the top eight.

Copenhagen - winless after three games - may not have the profile of a European elite, but will pose a tricky test given their experience at this level.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Tottenham vs Copenhagen is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off today, Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

The match will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in north London.

Frieze season in London: here’s what not to miss

Bergvall is now expected to miss this European game and the visit of Manchester United at the weekend due to concussion protocols, meaning Xavi Simons will get yet another chance to impress.

Mohammed Kudus and Djed Spence missed training at Hotspur Way on Monday afternoon with knocks, but Frank has revealed both players could be available for selection.

Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson will be battling for the left-wing spot, while Richarlison could get the nod up front with Mathys Tel ineligible and Randal Kolo Muani starting the last two games.

Copenhagen are sweating on the fitness of left-back Marcos Lopez, after being taken off during the 1-1 draw with Midtjylland at the weekend. Gabriel Pereira missed that game through illness and remains a doubt.

Tottenham vs Copenhagen prediction

Tottenham have little to worry about in defence, especially with the return of Cristian Romero, but simply must start giving opposition back lines something to think about.

On paper, the visit of the relative European minnows could prove a welcome tonic as they average two goals conceded per game, and shipped four at home to Borussia Dortmund last time out. Spurs can have little excuses and should need few come full-time.

Tottenham to win, 2-0.

Jamie Carragher singles out Tottenham star who 'hasn't got the quality' after Chelsea derby defeat

Carragher slams Spurs star who 'hasn't got the quality' for top flight - London Evening Standard
Description

The Blues were far from perfect, but a swashbuckling midfield performance from Moises Caicedo and a commanding showing from Robert Sanchez ensured they would not rue their wasteful finishing.

Highlighting a moment where Simons decided to pass backwards rather than attempt a more attacking ball, he said: “This guy here (Simons), the man you’ve spent the money on, he’s creative, he’s got players running forward, he’s got all the time in the world, he’s got options.

“A player of his quality and at the level we are talking about now, Premier League football, that ball has to go in there. It has to go in there. Little quick feet, simple pass, and then you are in a great position. Again, he goes back.”

Simons moved the ball to Palhinha, who passed backwards to Rodrigo Bentancur rather than picking a vertical attacking pass, and was booed by the restless home crowd for his troubles.

“For me, for a player playing in central midfield for Tottenham, that is a pass you have to be able to make. He can’t make it, so... he goes back. Listen to the boos. The only reason he does a clever turn on the ball is because of the boos. Otherwise, he’d have gone back to the goalkeeper.

“Palhinha gets back on the ball and he takes five touches because he hasn’t got the confidence or the ability.”

Palhinha has been a regular starter since joining on loan from Bayern Munich, and as injuries pile up, Frank may be forced to stick with the Portuguese in midfield.

For Carragher, though, Frank’s own adjustment to managing a Big Six side could be a bigger problem than the quality of the players at his disposal.

“A big problem for Thomas Frank and other managers who make that jump from a smaller team in the Premier League to one of the big boys, especially when they are seen as a pragmatic coach, is actually bringing the football to these teams,” he explained.

“You might look at that result and think there’s not a lot wrong, but when you watch the game at the weekend, that was like watching a League Two team against a Premier League team in the FA Cup.

“When you look at the stats, there was a huge contrast with the ball, and that is the biggest challenge for any coach making that jump from one of the teams in the bottom half of the Premier League to one of the big boys.”

Frank reveals Spence and Van de Ven talks after Chelsea snub - London Evening Standard
Description

Spence and Van de Ven ignored Frank as they left the pitch following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As Spurs were being booed off at home, Frank encouraged his team to do a lap of appreciation around the stadium.

Frank has revealed Spence and Van de Ven came “unprompted” to his office on Sunday for clear-the-air talks and to “say sorry for the situation”.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League game with Copenhagen, Frank said: “Micky and Djed came into my office yesterday and just said they wanted to say sorry for the situation.

“They didn't want it to look bad or any misconception that you can get in this beautiful media world.

"So there was no disrespect meant at all towards me or the team. They were just frustrated with the performance from us and the booing during the game."

Speaking after the Chelsea game on Saturday, Frank said: “All the players are of course frustrated. They would like to do well, they would like to win, they would like to perform well, so I understand that.”

Tottenham: Mohammed Kudus and Djed Spence injury latest as Thomas Frank issues update

Spence and Kudus absent from Tottenham training ahead of Champions League test - London Evening Standard
Description

Thomas Frank has allayed injury fears over Mohammed Kudus and Djed Spence after the pair missed training ahead of the visit of Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Summer signing Kudus has been Spurs’ most potent attacking threat this season and his likely absence in the Champions League clash will be a blow for Frank.

Asked for an update on the pair, Frank told reporters on Monday: “Djed and Mo both have knocks and could still be available for tomorrow."

Kudus was due to join his manager for the pre-match press conference, but was replaced by Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs are in desperate need of a morale-boosting win in Europe after a miserable home defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.

Left-back Destiny Udogie returned from injury against Chelsea, so he is now expected to start against Copenhagen at left-back with Spence a doubt.

Wilson Odobert and Brenan Johnson came off the bench against Chelsea, so will be vying to deputise for Kudus.

Lucas Bergvall was another no-show at Hotspur Way on Monday.

The young midfielder was forced off against Chelsea on Saturday with a concussion, so will remain sidelined until after the international break due to medical protocols.

Frank said: “Lucas is out through a concussion, which was obvious for everyone watching the game. Praise must go to the medical staff so early in the game.”

Abysmal home form, lack of attacking plan and incident with Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence put spotlight on Frank after wretched night against Chelsea

As the full-time whistle went and the boos rang out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the words of Dejan Kulusevski sprang to mind.

In a letter to the Tottenham fans written for The Players Tribune last year, he reflected on nine-man Spurs' 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge, when they persisted with a line so high it was nearly back to Seven Sisters.

Kulusevski recalled: “You didn’t boo us. You didn’t whistle us. You applauded us. You understood what it meant. Yes, we had lost a game. But we won in life.”

Two seasons on, Spurs lost another game but this time drained the life from their fans. A 1-0 defeat to Chelsea was far more than their performance deserved on a wretched night.

Spurs have lost ten of their last 12 matches against Chelsea but this was a new low. Their total xG of 0.05 is the lowest they have recorded in the Premier League since records began.

There was no semblance of an attacking plan beyond aimless long balls towards the isolated Randal Kolo Muani or hoping Mohammed Kudus could beat three men. Spurs trailed for an hour and managed two shots in that time.

It was a night that Thomas Frank will find hard to shake. Regardless of how Spurs respond against Copenhagen and Manchester United, this defeat will not be forgotten.

The Spurs supporters will not tolerate such insipid football. Frank is a fairly reactive manager, setting his teams up to nullify the opposition's strengths rather than focusing on his side's own.

There was already a section of the fanbase unconvinced by the style of play this season, for all results have been generally good, and a performance so bad against such bitter rivals will have more making their mind up.

Frank has been keen to point out that the team are adapting without the key attackers from last season and there is no doubt that injuries to Dominic Solanke, Kulusevski and James Maddison have had an impact.

However, Spurs' squad should still be capable of much more in attack than they currently are. Frank's hope is that players returning from injury will transform the team, but if performances like this become the norm he will not be there to find out.

Frank's authority was also seemingly questioned after the match. Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence both went to march straight off the pitch but Frank told them to instead go and applaud the fans.

The Dane then stood motionless glaring at the pair as they ignored him and continued down the tunnel. Frank played down the incident but it was a terrible look, particularly considering Van de Ven wore the captain's armband.

Spurs' home form is abysmal, with three wins from their last 19 Premier League home matches. Frank ahead of this match called for the fans to bring the noise against Chelsea. The music was stopped five minutes ahead of kick-off to allow the atmosphere to build organically and there were pyrotechnics to go with a Frank-narrated montage.

The effort was made by the club and the fans for this to be a defining moment for the Frank era. That could yet still prove true in a very different way than intended.

With the atmosphere increasingly agitated, the Spurs players appeared to shrink. Too few of them showed for the ball and there was no bravery, no confidence.

A dreadful first-half showing should have been followed by a performance with purpose after the break but Frank got no response out of his side. The Spurs boss spoke of the lack of intensity after the match and it is a huge concern that he could not rouse his players in the circumstances.

A stoppage-time free-kick saw Spurs load the Chelsea box, but instead it was taken short, played back to Guglielmo Vicario and eventually launched straight to Robert Sanchez. That was the cue for more boos and they intensified at the full-time whistle.

Spurs sit fifth in the table but results are now more in line with what the eye test has been suggesting. Of their five Premier League wins so far, four are over teams 15th or lower. A 94th-minute equaliser scraped a point against winless Wolves.

Defeat to Chelsea and in that manner on home soil was the lowest point of Frank's reign so far. These are still early days, but Manchester United, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle all loom in the next month. It could quickly become a long road back.

Tottenham fell to a frustrating 1-0 derby defeat to Chelsea at the weekend, and their evening got off to a dreadful start.

Thomas Frank gave Lucas Bergvall the nod in midfield, but, after taking a ball to the face, was withdrawn with less than ten minutes on the clock.

While Spurs never quite recovered from that early setback, it was not an entirely negative evening. There was a slight silver lining as Guglielmo Vicario impressed on his return to the starting XI, and the likes of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie also made comebacks from injury.

With two more matches remaining before the November international break, here is all the latest Tottenham injury news and potential return dates..

Lucas Bergvall

Lucas Bergvall started against Chelsea but came off with less than ten minutes played after taking a ball to the face.

He begged Frank and the club medical staff to let him continue, but, in line with concussion protocols, he was forced off, to be replaced by Xavi Simons.

Frank said: "There was a concussion. He couldn't stay on and I think the medical team did a good job in that instance."

Concussion recovery protocols stipulate that Bergvall must now recover for a minimum of 12 days, meaning he will not be eligible to return to the pitch until after the November international break.

Potential return date: November 23 vs Arsenal (A)

Archie Gray

Archie Gray missed the Chelsea defeat with a calf injury sustained in training ahead of last week’s trip to Newcastle.

Already a fringe player, the injury is an unwelcome setback for the youngster, who has found minutes hard to come by since Frank’s arrival.

No timeline has yet been confirmed for his return, though he is expected to spend at least a month on the sidelines as he recovers.

Potential return date: December

Dominic Solanke

Dominic Solanke is yet to start a match under Frank after he picked up a niggling ankle injury in pre-season.

He underwent minor surgery after struggling to shake the injury off, and Frank has confirmed he is recovering well.

Speaking ahead of a derby meeting with Chelsea, though, he could not put an exact date on his return to the pitch.

"Very aware that we want him back,” said Frank. “Hopefully touch wood have him back and no setbacks.

“We are very aware of doing it the right way. So it's going in the right direction. He'll not be available before the international break - that's the status now."

Potential return date: Late November/Early December

Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin’s extended absence from the pitch could soon come to an end.

The Romanian centre-back suffered an ACL injury during a Europa League match in January, but Frank is optimistic he could be back in contention after the November international break.

Frank confirmed that he has returned to full team training and is progressing well as he looks to build back to match fitness.

The Dane said: "He's fully integrated into training now. Because an ACL is such a... it's not tricky but it's such a big injury, because you're out for nine months so you need to build strength in the knee and so on.

"Then because we don't train that much, the big area stuff is not that much so we need to give him some of the bigger area stuff. But he is definitely getting closer to being involved."

He could make his long-awaited return in a north London derby immediately after the international break.

Potential return date: November 23 vs Arsenal (A)

Kota Takai

Kota Takai is yet to appear for Spurs since signing from Kawasaki Frontale in the summer, but is finally nearing a return.

Speaking ahead of facing Chelsea, Frank delivered this update on his fitness: “Quad. He is about to be training soon.”

Potential return date: November/December

Ben Davies

Ben Davies’ only playing time this season has come on international duty, but his most recent appearance for Wales, which came in a 4-2 loss to Belgium, saw him withdrawn early with a hamstring injury.

Speaking after Davies returned to Hotspur Way, Frank said his recovery period would “probably be around four or five weeks.”

Potential return date: Late November

Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma has not played for Spurs yet this season after he was left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup for disciplinary reasons.

He was then struck down with an injury, finally returning to the pitch for Mali during the October international break, but was injured again moments after his introduction and stretchered off.

He has since undergone surgery and finds himself back on the comeback trail.

Frank said of his recovery: “Biss, unfortunately, had a situation with the national team, I think everyone saw that, so he got a ligament injury to his ankle that will keep him out for weeks."

Potential return date: Unknown

Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski has been absent for several months after undergoing surgery on his patella following the Europa League final.

Frank is optimistic that he will be back on the pitch before the new year, but admitted last week that he is yet to return to outdoor training.

Speaking ahead of hosting Chelsea, he said: "Still not on the grass. Working very hard to get him fit as quick as possible."

Potential return date: December

James Maddison

It remains unclear whether James Maddison will be able to make a competitive appearance for Tottenham this season after he suffered an ACL injury in pre-season.

Potential return date: Summer 2026
