Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham reign got off to the worst possible start as Nordi Mukiele’s deflected effort handed Sunderland a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Having fallen into the bottom three following West Ham’s thrashing of Wolves on Friday night, Spurs needed to get a result on Wearside to ease their relegation fears.

De Zerbi’s side were, however, toothless as Sunderland dominated before taking a deserved lead to leave Spurs staring at relegation to the Championship.

Spurs’s relegation woes deepen with seventh defeat in eight league games

Before his Tottenham side had even kicked a ball, De Zerbi was under pressure to deliver a positive result.

West Ham’s win over Wolves on Friday night had seen Spurs slide into the relegation zone for the first time this season.

But with a new manager through the door, there was at least a sense of anticipation before kick-off. A belief that perhaps things could change.

That notion was quickly dispelled, however, as Spurs started brightly but fell away in a fashion that has become all too common this season.

Without a win this calendar year, Spurs are a team desperately bereft of confidence and as soon as they fell behind, there was no suggestion that they were ever going to get themselves back into the game.

The north London club are winless in each of their last 32 Premier League games after going behind (D8, L24), and despite 11 additional minutes, they never truly troubled Robin Roefs in the Sunderland goal.

Spurs’ board took a risk in appointing De Zerbi, given that in his previous roles, it has taken time for him to instil his ideas.

On an afternoon where Spurs laboured to their seventh defeat in eight league games, there was no evidence to suggest that he can be the man to turn things around and prevent Spurs slipping into the Championship.

Midfield experiment does not work

De Zerbi’s teams have always been noted for their ability to dominate possession.

As such, the make-up of the Italian’s midfield was always going to be a point of interest when the teams were announced pre-game.

De Zerbi opted to start Conor Gallagher and Archie Gray in the pivot of a 4-2-3-1, with Lucas Bergvall operating as the No10 as Xavi Simons remained on the bench for the fourth successive league game.

It was an experiment that did not work for De Zerbi, though, as Sunderland took control, with Spurs loose in possession and unable to stamp their authority on the game after a bright start.

Bergvall, starting for the first time since January’s victory over Borussia Dortmund, looked off the pace and struggled to get on the ball - no player took fewer touches than the Swede in the first-half.

Relegation fears: Tottenham

REUTERS

Gray and Gallagher, meanwhile, were stuck mopping up second balls as Sunderland chased the opening goal.

With just a week and a half on the training ground, it is clear Spurs have not yet got to grips with what De Zerbi demands in the press, and Sunderland were able to easily progress the ball through the middle of the pitch.

De Zerbi would have been looking for his midfield to provide energy off the ball and authority in possession.

Instead, Spurs were left chasing shadows as Sunderland applied all the pressure and De Zerbi rang the changes, bringing Bergvall and Gray off just past the hour mark.

Kinsky puts Atletico debacle behind him

Brought back into the side for his first appearance since that night in Madrid, Antonin Kinsky was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal afternoon for Spurs.

Despite facing constant jeers from Sunderland’s support, the Czech goalkeeper was comfortable with the ball at his feet and bred confidence into Spurs’ defence by springing off his line to collect a number of loose balls.

This was an opportunity for Kinsky to banish the demons of his performance against Atletico, and he did so by producing an assured performance to keep Spurs in the game despite Sunderland’s dominance.

The 23-year-old can count himself unlucky to have ended up on the losing side, conceding to a cruel deflection off Micky van de Ven, on a difficult afternoon in the race for survival.

De Zerbi says he expects Guglielmo Vicario to be back from injury next week, but he will have been encouraged by Kinsky’s performance, and at least knows he can come to rely on him in the run-in

While it will be little consolation to Spurs, this was a morale-boosting performance from Kinsky, who can now begin to rebuild his confidence again.

Tottenham failed to move out of the relegation zone as they fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge.

On an afternoon where Spurs needed a result, Sunderland dominated and took a deserved lead in the 61st minute when Nordi Mukiele’s effort deflected off Micky van de Ven.

Spurs offered little in the way of a response as they slipped to their seventh defeat in eight league games.

Sam Tabuteau was at the Stadium of Light to rate the Spurs players…

Antonin Kinsky 6: First appearance since his Atletico Madrid nightmare, he looked assured in possession and saved well from Brian Brobbey in first-half stoppage-time. A vocal presence, he did not appear to be fazed by the jeers he faced from the Sunderland support.

Pedro Porro 6: Was a constant out ball, and defended well in the whole. Forced a good save from Robin Roefs in stoppage-time and was Spurs’ brightest attacking outlet. The best of a bad bunch.

Cristian Romero 6: Made plenty of timely interventions and dealt well with Brobbey. Had to be replaced after a hefty collision with Kinsky.

Micky van de Ven 5: Booked towards the end of the first-half for a foul on Brobbey. Some assured moments covering in behind, but the Dutchman struggled with Brobbey’s physicality when the ball went into feet. Unlucky to see Mukiele’s shot cannon off him as Sunderland took the lead.

Destiny Udogie 6: Stretched the play when he was allowed to venture forward, with De Zerbi in constant communication with his fellow countryman.

Archie Gray 5: Has been arguably Spurs’ most consistent performer this season, but he was left chasing shadows this afternoon and was replaced shortly after Sunderland’s opening goal.

Conor Gallagher 5: De Zerbi clearly likes him, and he tried to give Spurs some bite in midfield by picking up a number of second balls. Offered little in possession and was lucky not to get punished after his loose touch was pounced upon on the edge of the area in the first-half.

Disastrous: Lucas Bergvall

REUTERS

Richarlison 4: Should have done better with a tame early effort. Played out of position on the left wing, the Brazilian struggled to impact the game. Replaced as part of a triple change after Sunderland’s goal.

Lucas Bergvall 3: The Swedish midfielder looked off the pace and was replaced just after Sunderland took the lead. Lost all nine of his duels and committed the most fouls of any Spurs player before he was replaced alongside Gray and Richarlison.

Randal Kolo Muani 3: Played for a penalty in the first-half and was also guilty of giving away possession on a number of occasions as he tried to spin into space.

Dominic Solanke 4: On the periphery of the game, he looked unsure of what to do with the ball when presented with time and space between the lines. Couldn’t convert when presented with a chance at the end of the first-half.

Chance missed: Dominic Solanke

Subs:

Mathys Tel 4: Can count himself unlucky not to have started, but was disappointing when he did eventually come on. Lacked quality when he got into attacking positions, as he failed to complete a single take-on.

Pape Matar Sarr 5: Could not change the tide of the game with Sunderland in complete control.

Joao Palhinha 5: Not the sort of player you want to bring on when chasing a game. Offered nothing as Spurs slumped to another defeat.

Kevin Danso 5: Came on for Romero after the Spurs captain had to be taken off following his collision with Kinsky. Kept Sunderland at bay as they pushed for a second goal.

Xavi Simons 5: Introduced far too late, with Spurs having lacked a creative threat all game.

Unused subs: Austin, Dragusin, Bissouma, Spence

Heading into Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge away to Sunderland, the brief is simple. Keep Tottenham in the Premier League.

Speaking in his first press conference since his appointment on a five-year deal, De Zerbi offered a glimpse into the future. A return to Ange-ball and a commitment to get Spurs challenging for the Premier League.

But that all feels a long way off happening right now. His first priority is getting points on the board after Spurs slipped into the relegation zone following West Ham’s 4-0 thrashing of Wolves on Friday.

De Zerbi’s long-term aims may be ambitious, but this is a man who believes he “deserves to manage in the Premier League” and is not afraid to radiate that confidence to his players.

One of the standout lines from his first address to supporters was to state that Spurs’ squad had to start remembering who they were. De Zerbi appears to have full confidence in the players at his disposal and has devised a plan to maximise their potential.

“I'm sure about the level of the players, because many players in the past I was very, very close to bring them in my former teams,” De Zerbi said as he faced the media for the first time since taking the reins in north London.

“I try to bring my style, myself, my character, my personality, my passion, to help the players first of all to show their qualities, because they have a lot of qualities. And then to achieve our target, because the most important part now is our target.”

This is a far cry from the disparaging approach adopted by his predecessor Igor Tudor, who within two games had already taken aim at his players, claiming he wanted to “see everything more” following a 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

Tudor appeared to be figuring it out on the spot, notably shoehorning Conor Gallagher and Xavi Simons out wide against Fulham before deciding they were not players he wanted to build his team around.

De Zerbi, by contrast, took time, unprompted, to lavish praise on Gallagher, whom he tried to sign at Brighton. Simons, as well, is someone who fits the mould in De Zerbi’s preferred 4-2-3-1 and the Italian is keen to help the pair rediscover their confidence on the ball and off the pitch.

With just seven games to go, De Zerbi looks to have taken a risk to try to keep Spurs in the Premier League. Yet for him, the opportunity and the timing were perfect. Money, he insists, was not a motivating factor.

“From my perspective, it was a big opportunity because Tottenham is one of the most important clubs in Premier League and Premier League is best league in world.

“I know the qualities of the players. We have a lot of specific players for my style, and then there was a crucial part that there was 12 days before the first game,” he said.

Spurs have not played for three weeks, but even with some much-needed time on the training ground, this will be a diluted version of the style De Zerbi hopes to instil later down the line.

A revered tactician, De Zerbi knows his philosophy is not important right now. He wants to focus on “organisation with the ball and without the ball” while working on the courage of a team that has struggled to take responsibility for the club’s situation.

Spurs’ confidence is shot. They have yet to win a league game this calendar year and were handily beaten at home by their relegation rivals Nottingham Forest before the international break.

De Zerbi’s task is to change that mentality. He needs his players to believe in themselves again, and feels that a change in perspective could prove useful.

Rather than dwelling on past performances, De Zerbi wants to focus on the potential of his squad and the avenues for development. Picking over the obvious faults in this side serves to benefit no one.

He has “confidence” that goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who has not played since his nightmare performance away to Atletico Madrid, can step in for the injured Guglielmo Vicario. He appeared to name the back four he will come to rely on in the final weeks of the season.

There is a clarity and confidence to the way De Zerbi has mapped out Spurs’ route to survival.

As De Zerbi himself has said, though, talk is cheap. The true test will come when his players take to the pitch at the Stadium of Light.

COMMENTS

Tyson Fury returns to the boxing ring tonight to take on Arslanbek Makhmudov in a huge London fight.

The former two-time world heavyweight champion, 37, is back in the ring for the first time since the second of his successive points defeats by Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh in December 2024, after which he retired once again lamenting what he felt was an unjust result as he failed to win the unified titles having lost his WBC belt in an initial undisputed showdown seven months earlier.

However, it was always expected that Fury would return, likely for a huge money-spinning showdown with long-time rival Anthony Joshua, and he repeatedly hinted as much before officially announcing his comeback in January, with an April date against Makhmudov confirmed.

Makhmudov, 36, is a Russian heavyweight based in Canada who has a professional record of 21-2 with 19 knockouts. He last fought in Sheffield in October, when he beat David Allen by unanimous decision.

Both of those defeats have come in his last five bouts, with Makhmudov stopped by now interim WBC champion Agit Kabayel in the fourth round in Riyadh in 2023 on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card ahead of Deontay Wilder vs Joseph Parker and Joshua vs Otto Wallin, losing his WBC-NABF and WBA Inter-Continental titles.

After bouncing back with an early knockout of Miljan Rovcanin, he was then upset by Italy’s Guido Vianello in the summer of 2024 in a rematch of their World Series of Boxing clash after gruesome swelling around his left eye forced the ringside doctor to wave off the bout at the start of round eight.

Makhmudov responded with a first-round knockout of Jamaican Ricardo Brown in Quebec City, before travelling to the UK to defeat Allen.

Fury’s comeback comes amid yet more speculation that a fight with Joshua has been agreed, with renewed suggestions that it could take place in Dublin in the autumn.

Joshua last fought by knocking out Jake Paul in Miami in December, though his boxing future looked uncertain after he subsequently sustained minor injuries in a car accident in Nigeria in which two of his close friends and team members died.

Eddie Hearn has said that they have been “very focused” on making the Fury fight, but also did not rule out Joshua - who was in attendance at the O2 Arena - potentially facing another long-time rival in Deontay Wilder, who called him out in person after defeating Derek Chisora in a thrilling contest by split decision last weekend.

Joshua is also expected to be ringside for Fury vs Makhmudov.

Fury vs Makhmudov prediction

There will no doubt be an awful lot of ring rust to shake off for Fury, who has not fought for 16 months and spent the entirety of 2025 outside the ring.

You would certainly not expect the self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ to be at anywhere close to his best after such an extended absence, though as usual has promised a “brutal knockout” to announce his latest return and first fight in the UK since stopping Chisora at Tottenham in 2022.

Makhmudov is tough, aggressive and a hard-hitter who only gives up a couple of inches in height to Fury and who will view this as a massive opportunity to make a statement on the very biggest stage.

However, defeats by Kabayel and Vianello have also exposed his vulnerabilities and he will have been disappointed not to have stopped Allen.

The far more dynamic Fury is a whole new level of challenge that he has never faced before and will surely not be able to handle.

Fury to win by stoppage.

Fury vs Makhmudov weigh-in results

Fury stepped on the scales on Friday lighter than he was for his most recent bout against Usyk, coming in at 267.9lbs, while Makhmudov weighed in at 264.9lbs.

Tottenham: Roberto De Zerbi reveals long-term Premier League ambition ahead of relegation battle

De Zerbi reveals long-term Tottenham ambition to excite supporters - London Evening Standard
Description

Roberto De Zerbi has said that his long-term ambition is to guide Tottenham to the top of the Premier League table despite having just seven games to save them from relegation.

The Italian head coach’s immediate priority is to prevent Tottenham slipping into the second division for the first time in nearly 50 years, but in signing a five-year deal, he appears to have underlined his commitment to the club and said he would stay “no matter what” next season in his first interview since his appointment.

The length of De Zerbi’s contract, which does not have a relegation clause, was considered surprising, given his longest managerial stint came at Sassuolo between 2018 and 2021.

But asked whether he was committed to the challenge at Spurs, De Zerbi said he planned to stay for a long time and wanted to help the club challenge for the Premier League title in the future.

“I stayed three years in Sassuolo and then I left from Ukraine when the war started. In Brighton I left for different problems and in Marseille maybe the same,” De Zerbi said in his first pre-match press conference as Spurs boss.

“I would like to stay four or five, for a long time. I don't know how many years but in Marseille like this because in Marseille my idea was to stay for a long time,

“Then you have to speak with the club and when you have a different view of football or other things you have to leave money and you have to leave.

“But in my plan for sure there is the idea to stay for a long time, to try to put Tottenham, I'm not speaking about the titles because it's not the right moment now, but to put Tottenham to stay in the first position in the Premier League because there are all parts to reach that level.”

For now, De Zerbi’s only aim is to steer a Spurs side yet to win a league game this calendar year away from the relegation zone.

The brief is simple, and De Zerbi says his messaging since taking his first training session this week has been not to overcomplicate things.

A revered tactician, De Zerbi admits the intricacies of his style will take a backseat as he seeks to get his team playing with courage and character again after a brutal run of results.

“Listen, my style is one part, about the style of play and one part about the character, the personality. I have no time enough to work in the principle or in build-up so much, or in the last 20 metres” De Zerbi continued.

“I want to give organisation with the ball and without the ball. Two principles without the ball, three principles, four more. Something more in possession, in offensive phase and that's it,

“What I want to do, what I want to achieve immediately is the character, is the right spirit, the right courage to play, to attack. Because the DNA of this club, of this squad is to find the goal, to score.

Key setback rocks Spurs before another new era begins amid Premier League relegation fight

Sidelined: Mohammed Kudus may not play again for Tottenham this season

Mohammed Kudus could miss the rest of the season in a major blow to new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi.

Kudus has been out since the start of January with a quad injury, but had begun to ease his way back into training before the international break.

It was hoped he would be in contention to face Sunderland this weekend in De Zerbi’s first game in charge.

However, Spurs have confirmed that Kudus could be set to undergo surgery, ruling him out of Spurs’ final seven games of the season and casting his World Cup hopes with Ghana into doubt.

Kudus still has the most Premier League assists of any Spurs player this season, and his prolonged absence would come as a huge blow as the club look to stave off the threat of relegation.

Meanwhile, De Zerbi has confirmed that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who underwent surgery on a hernia injury over the international break, will not face Sunderland.

“No, Vicario is not ready for this game, I hope he can come back earlier next week, but I don't know yet,” the Italian revealed in the pre-match press conference.

Vicario’s injury means that Antonin Kinsky is likely to start for the first time since his nightmare performance away at Atletico Madrid last month under Igor Tudor.

The Czech ‘keeper gifted Atletico two goals in nine minutes before being replaced just 17 minutes into his Champions League debut.

It is telling that while De Zerbi has only added two new members to his coaching staff, he has elected to bring in long-time fitness coach Marcattilio Marcattilii.

De Zerbi has inherited a squad riddled with injuries, and one of his major priorities will be to ensure as many players as possible return to fitness before the end of the season.

That said, the Italian will be boosted by the returns of Lucas Bergvall and Mathys Tel, who both featured heavily in footage of De Zerbi’s first training session last week.

Bergvall came off the bench during Spurs’ 3-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest before the international break, while Tel had to be withdrawn midway through the second half with a groin issue and pulled out of the France Under-21 squad.

Both players, though, look set to be available for selection on Wearside despite remaining at Hotspur Way over the international break.

Pape Matar Sarr is a doubt after suffering a shoulder injury while playing for Senegal, while Rodrigo Bentancur is edging closer to returning from a serious hamstring injury.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are long-term absentees, but there is optimism that both could play before the end of the season.

Spurs could find themselves in the relegation zone before they play Sunderland, with just one point currently separating them from 18th-place West Ham, who host bottom club Wolves on Friday night.

De Zerbi needs to make an immediate impact, but it remains to be seen whether he will opt for a three or a four-man defence, having switched between both systems during his managerial career so far.

One thing we do know is that De Zerbi favours a ball-dominant style, and so his selections will likely reflect his desire to maintain possession and bait his opponents into pressuring his team.

De Zerbi has already admitted that results are more important than style heading into the final seven games of the season, and a fast start is imperative, with Spurs yet to win a league game this calendar year.

Predicted Tottenham XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Gray, Bergvall; Kolo Muani, Simons, Tel; Solanke

Doubts: Sarr
