Why Lucas Bergvall is missing from Tottenham squad against Bodo/Glimt today - London Evening Standard
Description

Bergvall had been ever-present for Spurs in the Europa League this season, starting each of the last six fixtures, and was expected to retain his place starting line-up tonight.

However, an ankle issue means he will play no part at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what is a crucial game to keep the north London outfit's season alive.

Speaking to TNT Sport ahead of kick-off, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said: “Unfortunately for Lucas, he picked up an injury in training yesterday. He tweaked his ankle unfortunately and misses out tonight.

“Disappointing for him because he's been outstanding this year and he's hugely disappointed with that and unfortunately he misses out.”

In Bergvall’s place in Yves Bissouma gets the nod over Pape Matar Sarr and Postecoglou has backed the midfielder to give a good account of himself.

“I just think the balance of our midfield with what we need to do tonight and what we're facing up against,” the Spurs boss added.

“The beauty of Lucas was that he gave us the balance in there and for tonight Biss will give us more of the input we need.”

Elsewhere, Postecoglou's XI is more ore less as expected. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven return to the backline after being rested for the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool, while Rodrigo Bentancur is back in the engine room.

Guglielmo Vicario has been shaky of late but starts in between the posts, while Dominic Solanke leads the line.

The only real surprise is the inclusion of Richarlison. Though Postecoglou has explained the selection.

He said: “Again I think we need to be aggressive tonight. Richy has been working his way back to fitness and he's been playing on the left quite regularly in his career.

“I think tonight with his experience, especially his ability in and around the box we want to put some pressure on them and he can help us in that area.”

A teenage boy gunned down in broad daylight in North London was targeted in a “gangland-style” ambush, witnesses have claimed.

The victim, 16, was reportedly jumped by a group of half a dozen boys and shot in the leg at point blank range on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were called to the incident on Penshurst Road — near White Hart Lane Overground station and just minutes away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — at around 4pm.

He was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

Boy, 16, shot in broad daylight in Tottenham street

A local shopkeeper told Metro: “There were about five or six boys with their hoods up and faces covered. One had a pistol and shot the boy in the leg.

“It seemed to me like a gangland thing. There was lots of shouting and then a single bang. The boy was laying down but still conscious. It looked targeted to me. There are a lot of gangs around here.”

Another witness, who works as a takeaway delivery driver, said: “I heard the bang. I have been in war zones before and I knew it was a gunshot. The boy was on the ground.”

A pizza shop worker added: “It was a big police operation. The gangs cause a lot of grief around here.”

The teen remains in hospital and his condition is neither life-threatening nor non-life-threatening, the Metropolitan Police said.

The shooting occurred just yards from where Nikolay Vandev, 19, was fatally stabbed by two teenagers in 2022 .

A spokesman for the Met said: “Officers were called to the incident in Penshurst Road at 4pm on Tuesday.

“The boy was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

“He remains in hospital and his condition is neither life-threatening and non-life-changing.”

Penshurst Road has since been reopened ahead of Spurs’ UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final first-leg clash tonight against Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt.

Tottenham vs Bodo/Glimt: Europa League — LIVE - London Evening Standard
Description

After passing a tough quarter-final examination, Tottenham host Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-final first leg tonight hoping to take a giant step towards salvaging a rather bizarre campaign. Whilst Spurs are going strong in Europe, their Premier League form sunk to a new low last weekend as the 5-1 loss away at Liverpool was defeat number 19.

However, very few have been better than Spurs this season when it comes to getting results on the continent. Potentially 180 minutes, or more, away from reaching a first European final since 2019 and Ange Postecoglou just may live up to his promise of always winning silverware in his second year at a club as his side will start the tie as heavy favourites.

Although this is their first-ever European semi-final, Bodo/Glimt are not to be taken lightly. The four-time champions of Norway overcame Lazio in the last round, proving they are capable of an upset. With Tottenham's season and surely his job on the line, Ange Postecoglou is likely to lean on what he knows when setting up his team against Bodo/Glimt tonight.

Which is just as well, because if there was ever a time to take the game to the opponents and try to run up a big score, it is against the depleted Norwegians in the Europa League semi-final first leg.

Spurs' win away at Eintracht Frankfurt in their quarter-finals was a gritty, committed display, which ended with a backs-to-the-wall rearguard from a Postecoglou team playing five defenders and aiming to run down the clock.

The performance could scarcely have been more opposing to the ideals set out by Postecoglou when he joined the club - effectively to keep attacking, regardless of the state of the game - but then most of Spurs' most significant victories in the second half of this miserable season have been that way.

A 2-1 win over Brentford and the surprise 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final were also examples of Postecoglou's side grinding out a result, while the defeat of Manchester United was hardly free-flowing.

The visit of Bodo/Glimt calls for something quite different and a return to the gung-ho principles on which Postecoglou built his reputation.

As the Australian acknowledged on Wednesday, it would be reckless to "underestimate" Bodo/Glimt given their progress to this stage and previous European scalps, but it is not disrespectful to acknowledge that they should be much more threatening in the decider in the Arctic Circle next week, leaving Spurs under pressure to make the most of home advantage.

The visitors will be missing three players to suspension in north London; influential captain Patrick Berg (whose father, grandfather, great uncle and two uncles also played for Bodo/Glimt); his midfield partner Hakon Evjen; and back-up striker Andreas Helmersen are all banned. Winger Ole Blomberg, meanwhile, missed their last match with an injury is a doubt for Thursday, along with key centre-half Odin Bjortuft.

The upshot is that a patched-up Bodo/Glimt could be missing up to five key players against a Spurs side for whom captain Heung-min Son is the only key absentee.

With their suspended trio set to be available again next week, Bodo/Glimt will be stronger in the second leg but, more significantly, it will be an entirely different contest on their artificial pitch.

"It's a big difference between artificial and grass in many ways but the main key is that the ball goes so fast," said Bjortuft. "It may be harder to turn and everything for players that are not used to it."

Bodo/Glimt’s previously scalps at Aspmyra include a 6-1 drubbing of Jose Mourinho's Roma, as well as a 2-0 win over Postgecoglou's Celtic in February 2022.

They beat Lazio 2-0 at home in the quarter-final first leg and were unlucky not to score more in a game they dominated against the Serie A side, and they will be confident of overturning most scorelines in such unique conditions.

Spurs' win in Frankfurt was impressive but their away form in Europe this season has otherwise been patchy, including a 1-0 loss at AZ Alkmaar in the last 16.

Everything suggests the two games are likely to be contrasting affairs, even down to the weather; 25 degree heat in London should suit Spurs more than the visitors, who are still dealing with chilly conditions at the start of spring.

With UEFA's decision to scrap away goals, there is even more incentive for Spurs to revert to an attacking, risky approach, in the hope of putting themselves in a position of strength for the decider.

"I think you try and do that anyway," Postecoglou said. "Playing at home in Europe for every club has its advantages, and you want to try to take that advantage. Bodo away is a difficult challenge."

Postecoglou is aiming to put their miserable Premier League form to one side and build on the way Spurs' played in the first leg against Frankfurt, 1-1 draw in north London which left the head coach feeling deserted by "the football gods".

Spurs were the better side but could not convert their dominance into goals after levelling the game midway through the first half, and failing to establish a first-leg lead against Bodo/Glimt may prove more costly.

"I think tomorrow night what's really important is that we put in another dominant performance," Postecoglou said. "Hopefully if we create as many chances, it's time they go in rather than hitting crossbars and so forth."

Spurs' hopes of being more clinical have been dealt a blow by the absence of Son, who remains sidelined with a foot complaint, with Mathys Tel, described by James Maddison on Wednesday as "a goalscorer", set to deputise for the South Korean again.

Postecoglou has also called on Spurs' fans to play their part tonight, predicting a "fantastic atmosphere", although he played down the prospect of his side running up a big lead in the first leg, instead predicting two tight matches.

"But I don't think you just go into tomorrow night thinking you're going to kill off the tie then," he said. "I think semi-finals for the most part tend to be pretty tight. And I expect that tomorrow night."

Dejan Kulusevski is likely to start but manager Ange Postecoglou faces a decision over where to play the Swede, who could come in at No10 for James Maddison or replace Brennan Johnson on the right wing.

Playing Kulusevski in the front three would give Spurs more energy in the middle but he is less of a goal threat than Johnson.

Postecoglou also faces a decision at full-back, with Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence competing for two places.

Spence has gone off the boil in recent weeks, while Udogie was preferred at left-back in both legs of the quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, so the Italian and Porro seem likeliest to get the nod.

Elsewhere, Postecoglou's XI should be easy to predict. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven will return to the backline after being rested for the chastening 5-1 defeat to Liverpool, while Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur have established themselves as the preferred midfield two.

Guglielmo Vicario has been shaky of late but remains Spurs' No1 goalkeeper and a dressing room leader, while Dominic Solanke will lead the line.

Radu Dragusin is Spurs' only long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury which will keep him out until next season, while Antonin Kinsky, Sergio Reguilon and Timo Werner are all ineligible in Europe.

Tottenham will hope to lay own a marker in their Europa League semi-final when they host Bodo/Glimt tonight.

In the midst of an abysmal Premier League campaign, Europe’s secondary club competition has ultimately proven to be a source of positivity for Spurs.

Whilst there has been the odd poor result here and there, Ange Postecoglou’s side saved arguably their most mature performance of the season in the quarter-final second leg away from home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

That 1-0 win in Germany and subsequent 2-1 aggregate victory has set up a semi-final showdown with the reigning Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt.

It is expected that Postecoglou will pick a much stronger team to that which started the 5-1 hammering at the hands of Liverpool last weekend, though captain Heung-min Son remains on the sidelines.

Bodo/Glimt have a few selection worries of their own as they look to ensure this semi-final tie is still alive when next week’s second leg takes place in Norway on an artificial pitch.

Here’s everything you need to know about where to watch...

TV channel: In the UK, the game will be broadcast on TNT Sports 2. Coverage starts at 7pm BST ahead of an 8pm kick-off.

Ange Postecoglou has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the crunch Europa League first leg against Bodo/Glimt, with captain Heung-min Son still sidelined with a foot injury.

In Son's absence, Mathys Tel is expected to continue from the left wing for Tottenham after a lively display in the quarter-final decider against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dejan Kulusevski is likely to start but Postecoglou faces a decision over where to play the Swede, who could come in at No10 for James Maddison or replace Brennan Johnson on the right wing.

Spurs dealt major injury blow for semi-final showdown with Bodo/Glimt - London Evening Standard
Description

Tottenham have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of the first leg of their Europa League semi-final with Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

Heung-min Son was absent from training on Wednesday morning and looks set to miss the game in north London.

Son has missed the last four Spurs games with a troublesome foot injury but Spurs hoped he would be fit for the first leg against Bodo/Glimt.

Ange Postecoglou said last week that Spurs were taking a “a day-by-day decision” with Son and that it would be “touch and go” whether the South Korean would be fit for the first leg.

Postecoglou is due to provide up an update on Son’s availability when he holds his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

“If [he’s not ready] for the first game we think he’ll be ready for the second game,” said Postecoglou last week.

Rodrigo Bentancur also trained on Wednesday, having been left out of the squad for Sunday’s 5-1 defeat at Liverpool to manage his fitness.

Postecoglou has no other fresh injury concerns ahead of the first leg against Bodo/Glimt.

Tottenham: Lucas Bergvall explains decision to sign new Spurs contract

The 19-year-old Swedish midfielder has been one of the shining lights in a difficult season for Spurs, who face Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.

Explaining his decision to commit his long-term future to the club, Bergvall said: “It’s a club with great ambitions, I’m really enjoying being here and playing for this amazing football club.

“Short-term, Europa League. Of course the goal is to win everything. And that’s what we try to do. Now we go on Thursday.”

Bergvall was expected to take time to settle in the Premier League but he has established himself as a key player under Ange Postecoglou.

“I’ve learned a lot,” he said. “Coming to a new country, a new culture, of course I had Deki (Dejan Kulusevski) helping me a lot in the beginning but still, living on your own, making food and everything... it’s not only to be a footballer to train every day, it’s everything around it.

“You have to take care of the car, the house or apartment... everything really, so I think I’ve developed a lot as a person as well as a player.

“I think I worked really hard for this and with help from my team-mates and the staff, I’ve developed a lot this season.

“If you compare to the beginning of the season, I came from the Swedish league, I had a lot to learn and needed to settle down a little bit but I think around Christmas and before that, I started to get more time (on the pitch) and I started to develop and learn more with help from my team-mates and the staff.”
