Cristian Romero admitted he has been “so angry” at times during his Tottenham career with the club’s structure, but stated his belief that positive changes have now been made.

The Spurs centre-back joined Thomas Frank on Monday to conduct his first press conference since arriving at the club in 2021.

Romero committed his future to the club earlier this summer by signing a new four-year contract. That came after he took over the captain's armband from Heung-min Son.

Heading into the summer, there had been speculation over Romero’s future in north London. The Argentine has previously spoken of his desire to play in Spain and in a message paying tribute to Ange Postecoglou after his sacking, Romero alluded to “the many obstacles” that the former Spurs boss had to overcome.

That was not the first time Romero had hinted at his frustrations publicly, having also called for the club to invest in the squad more last December.

Asked whether he felt the “obstacles” at Spurs had now been removed, Romero was firm in insisting that “everyone inside” the club is on the same page.

“I did a lot of interviews right which seemed like I was talking badly about people inside the club but in the end I'm a person who sometimes makes mistakes and that’s it.

“I always want the best for the club. Sometimes, things have been said that aren't true as well, but always everything I said is because I want there to be a structure of a club that can be at the top level, part of the big clubs.

“That's why I was sometimes so angry before, but today I see a very, very organised club with a clear idea and a coach who is organising things and everyone is seeing that in a short space of time we are with him and that’s it. Absolutely everyone inside is looking in the same direction and that is the important thing.

“We hope, obviously, to continue like this. There are objectives for the season but as I said before our heads are in tomorrow’s game. We are going to enjoy that we’re back in the Champions League, that’s the most important thing.

“I see a fantastic group, a coach, who leaves us with a clear idea. The group is very happy and we have to go game by game but I believe we can achieve great things. We hope and we are going to fight to lift another trophy.”

In his comments calling for the club to spend more, Romero referenced how managers and players had come and gone at Spurs, but “it's always the same people responsible”.

The Spurs captain was pressed on whether he felt the ambition at Spurs could now be different with Daniel Levy gone and the Lewis family increasingly visible, and he said the club have “started” to pull in the same direction.

“As I said before it’s a bit of everything, it’s about the group of players, the coaching staff, the people that work for us, the executives obviously, in the end it depends on everyone that we pull in the same direction,” Romero said.

“I think that since Thomas arrived here, they have started to take all those decisions to go in the same direction. And then when it’s like that, everything runs a lot more easily right? The players know what the objectives are for the season and we continue like this.

“We started to improve and we want another title this season. We hope to carry on like this, improving, working all together to achieve the objectives.”

Romero was also keen to emphasise that he has never claimed he wanted to leave Spurs, despite suggestions heading into the summer that he could be looking for a move.

“Like I've said before, I spoke in an interview… sometimes in football, stuff comes out on social media and in the press in general,” Romero said.

“I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing ever came through me to that effect.

“The most important thing is that what people say here at the club and what I say. People like the manager and the president here. It's important what they say, not anyone else.

“I'm very happy here. Tottenham for me is a family, one big family. The first day that I arrived here, they gave everything to me.”

Spurs injury blow ahead of Champions League showdown with Villarreal - London Evening Standard
Description

Dominic Solanke was not involved in Tottenham training on Monday and looks set to remain sidelined for their Champions League opener against Villarreal.

Spurs begin their European campaign on Tuesday at home to the Spanish side as they look to back up what has been a positive start to life under Thomas Frank domestically.

But the Spurs boss looks set once again have to deal with the absence of Solanke, who took no part in open training the day before the match.

The 28-year-old has been out with an ankle injury since coming off the bench in the win over Manchester City last month.

That was an issue that kept Solanke out for the majority of pre-season, and he has now missed matches against Bournemouth and West Ham.

Speaking ahead of the win over the Hammers on Saturday, Frank was asked whether it could be a problem that requires surgery.

The Spurs boss did not respond to that directly but insisted he did not expect Solanke to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"I think right now we are doing everything we can – the medical team - to get on top of it and that’s what we’re focusing on," Frank said.

"I get a feeling he is not too far away, but he’s just fallen short for this week.

Should Solanke be ruled out again, Richarlison is likely to come back into the side to lead the line.

He started on the bench against West Ham after returning late in the week from international duty with Brazil, as Mathys Tel got his chance.

The Frenchman had little impact and has been left out of the Champions League squad for the league phase so cannot feature against Villarreal.

Randal Kolo Muani is available, though, and is in contention to make his Spurs debut.

The games are coming thick and fast for Tottenham as attentions turn to Villarreal in the Champions League.

Spurs should bounce into the opening game of the league phase after getting back on track in the Premier League at the weekend by beating West Ham 3-0 at the London Stadium.

That result and performance will have pleased new head coach Thomas Frank especially after the disappointment of the 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth before the international break.

It is now three wins from four at the start of the Premier League season for Tottenham and they’ll be looking to carry such form into their meeting with the La Liga outfit.

An additional positive from the win over West Ham was no fresh injuries were reported, although Dominic Solanke was not fit enough to return and faces a race against the clock to prove his fitness as Champions League nights return to N17.

That said, here’s a look at the latest Tottenham injury news.

Dominic Solanke

Tottenham suffered a big blow before kick-off against Bournemouth as Dominic Solanke was not named in the matchday squad.

The reason for Solanke missing out against his former club before the international was due to an ankle issue, as confirmed by Thomas Frank.

The hope was that Solanke would be fit and available for selection against the Hammers, but that wasn’t the case. Speaking ahead of the trip to the London Stadium, Frank delivered an update.

“Everyone returned from international duty well,” he said.

“Always positive, very happy about that. Dom will not be available still, I don't expect it to be too long but he will not be available for this game.

“I think right now we are doing everything we can – the medical team - to get on top of it and that’s what we’re focusing on. I get a feeling he is not too far away, but he’s just fallen short for this week."

Potential return date: Late September

Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski shocked fans during the international break with a graphic update on his recovery from a serious knee injury.

Captioned "warning for sensitive content ... thank god it happened so I could see it clear", Kulusevski posted an image of behind his knee cap, taken during surgery.

Despite the gruesome imagery, Kulusevski is upbeat over his ongoing recovery but suggested he would not return until early 2026.

"The status is great, " he told Viaplay. "I wake up every day with the same hunger.

"I will be back in the very, very near future. If everything goes according to plan, I am very confident that I will be back in two-three months."

Potential return date: Early 2026

Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma remains sidelined with an injury, which may have derailed his summer move away from Spurs.

The midfielder is yet to play any competitive minutes this season, having initially been left out of the Spurs squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup for disciplinary reasons, and then he picked up an injury in training ahead of the Premier League opener against Burnley.

Speaking ahead of the win over West Ham, Thomas Frank suggested a return is not too far away.

Potential return date: Late September

Radu Dragusin

There was a surprise face on the Tottenham training pitches last week as Radu Dragusin joined training with those not on international duty.

The 23-year-old has been out since suffering an ACL injury in February. but has stepped up his recovery in recent weeks and is now ready to participate in first-team training.

However, Dragusin has been left out of Spurs' squad for the league phase of the Champions League and head coach Thomas Frank has suggested that the defender could still be a couple of months away from being in contention to play.

"Of course it is an ACL," Frank said before the international break.

"I'm always a little bit more, not worried but just aware that it takes time. When you've been out of football for nine months, you know, you need to get in. It's not enough to have a six-week pre-season.

"You need to take a little bit more time, but it's positive and and some surprise and come back quicker, of course."

Potential return date: Late 2025

Kota Takai

Summer signing Kota Takai is yet to feature for Spurs after picking up a plantar fascia issue.

Takai missed early-summer friendlies against Reading, Wycombe and Luton, before Thomas Frank confirmed: "Kota got a plantar fascia injury, unfortunately we don't know the scale of it - weeks."

Potential return date: Unknown

James Maddison

James Maddison is set to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 campaign after rupturing his ACL in pre-season.

The injury came in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle, and he has since undergone surgery.

Spurs have not put a timeframe on how long Maddison will be out but he is set for a long spell on the sidelines, but he is expected to miss much of this season.

A club statement read: “His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.

“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.”

Potential return date: April 2026

Tottenham piled the misery on rivals West Ham with a comfortable 3-0 win at the London Stadium.

After a fairly uneventful first half, Spurs effectively put the match within 15 minutes of the restart, as Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall scored with headers either side of a straight red card for Tomas Soucek.

Micky van de Ven made it three with a smart finish in the box, as Spurs cruised through the remainder of the match and made it three wins out of four to start the Premier League season.

Here’s how Standard Sport rated the Spurs players at the London Stadium...

Guglielmo Vicario 7

Barely tested beyond a couple of tame Jarrod Bowen efforts. Already has three Premier League clean sheets this season.

Pedro Porro 8

Struggled early on to stop crosses from El Hadji Malick Diouf. Dangerous deliveries of his own though, and got forward well again to support Mohammed Kudus.

Cristian Romero 9

Sensational performance from Spurs’ captain. Unlucky to have a goal ruled out when powering in header and produced a sublime ball over the top for Spurs’ second. So consistent since taking the armband.

Micky van de Ven 9

Bizarre flick in his own box nearly caught Vicario out, but otherwise another supreme showing. Pace kept West Ham in check on the counter and swept home confidently to put the match to bed.

How three Red Roses fought for their place on the pitch

Djed Spence 6

Not at his best and booked when bringing down Bowen after a long ball over the top. West Ham’s best moments in the first half came down his side.

Joao Palhinha 8

Played the deeper role by himself and was tidy in possession, doing his job with minimal fuss. Fortunate to avoid an injury when caught by Soucek’s awful challenge.

Pape Matar Sarr 8

Menace at both ends of the pitch. Works as hard as anyone off the ball and now producing end product, heading in confidently to open the scoring.

Mohammed Kudus 8

Showed his character to keep showing for the ball early on as West Ham booed his every touch. Delivery from corners was superb and went close with volleyed effort in final minutes.

Lucas Bergvall 9

Justified Frank’s decision with a strong display as the most advanced midfielder. Confident in possession, dogged off the ball, and a sensational looped header gave him a deserved goal.

Xavi Simons 7

Provided flashes of what Spurs fans can expect but not quite on same wavelength as team-mates yet. Travels so smoothy with the ball and some classy touches, as well as his first assist with corner for Sarr’s header.

Mathys Tel 5

Anonymous in the first half with the fewest touches of any player on the pitch. Slightly more involved after the break and looked more comfortable out wide, but likely to face a lengthy wait for next Premier League start.

Substitutes:

Destiny Udogie (Spence 71’) 6

Enjoyable cameo for the full-back, who had no defending to do with West Ham long since beaten.

Richarlison (Simons 71’) 5

Rested after returning late in the week from international duty. Barely had a kick.

Brennan Johnson (Bergvall 79’) 6

Played on the right when coming on as Kudus shifted inside. Denied by a wonderful save by Mads Hermansen, but was offside anyway.

Wilson Odobert (Tel 79’) 6

Little chance to make an impression as Spurs coasted to the full-time whistle at walking pace.

Kevin Danso (Van de Ven 79’) 6’

Introduction late on allowed Frank to rest Van de Ven ahead of a busy schedule.
