Description

Tottenham have Dominic Solanke back tonight for their UEFA Super Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain, but the striker has only made the bench.

The Europa League champions take on the Champions League winners in Udine as Thomas Frank’s side look to go into the new Premier League season on a high.

It has been a frustrating summer for Solanke so far, with the striker playing in just one friendly at the start of pre-season before being sidelined with an ankle injury.

However, Solanke has been named in Spurs’ squad for the Super Cup after Frank suggested last week that he would “be available quite soon".

Spurs have opted to be cautious with his fitness, though, which means Richarlison continuing up front.

Luka Vuskovic is back in the matchday squad, while Destiny Udogie misses out as he continues his recovery from injury.

Dejan Kulusevski is out for “a long time” with a serious knee injury sustained at the end of last season, while James Maddison is set to miss the majority of the campaign after suffering an ACL injury.

Pape Matar Sarr started in front of Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha in last week’s friendly defeat to Bayern Munich, and he plays with those two again in what looks to be more of a regimented midfield trio.

Tottenham are out for a second European trophy in quick succession when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup this evening. Thomas Frank takes charge of his first competitive game of the north Londoners since his move from Brentford earlier this summer, and he will lock horns on the touchline with the experienced Luis Enrique.

Enrique led PSG to that elusive Champions League glory in Munich, where Paris thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 at the Allianz Arena as their young stars struck fear into the footballing world. Now, it is up to Spurs to keep them out and upset the apple cart in Udine, where they face the Ligue 1 champions.

Cristian Romero will lead out Spurs for the first time since being named club captain this morning, after Heung-min Son departed for pastures new at LAFC. Midfielder Yves Bissouma misses out entirely after Frank decided to leave him at home after turning up for training late “one too many” times, according to the Danish manager. Stay tuned for all the updates with our live blog below!

Tottenham: Thomas Frank seeks fast start as he bids to avoid familiar issue at Spurs

Description

After a 41-year wait for a European trophy, Tottenham have the chance to do it all over again 84 days later.

Victory over Paris Saint-Germain in Udine on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup would not quite spark celebrations to match those seen in Bilbao and north London three months ago, but it would be a key statement to kickstart the Thomas Frank era.

In his first press conference as Spurs boss last month, Frank was asked for his early impressions after taking the job.

“It’s the easy part now - the honeymoon,” Frank said. “Everyone is happy, the sun is shining, we haven’t played a game yet. I think the honeymoon is five, six weeks of pre-season. Then it’s reality."

The sun is set to be shining on a blisteringly hot evening in Udine, but the honeymoon is over and the serious business has arrived.

The Super Cup appears a more significant game for Spurs than PSG, who have not played for a month. Spurs, on the other hand, have come to the end of a not entirely convincing pre-season.

They were well-beaten by Bayern Munich last week, bringing a swift halt to any momentum picked up from the impressive defensive showing in the win over Arsenal in Hong Kong.

Frank has placed an emphasis on improving the team's structure since taking charge and there have been clear signs of improvement, though that has come at a cost.

Spurs have scored twice across their past four pre-season matches - a goal from close to the halfway line from Pape Matar Sarr and a deflected Brennan Johnson strike.

Sarr has largely played as the most advanced midfielder, with Frank searching for solutions after a serious knee injury to James Maddison saw him join Dejan Kulusevski as a long-term absentee.

That is not a problem of Frank's making and he has not been helped by a quiet transfer window. It feels essential that Spurs add more creativity to midfield this month and talks over a move for Eberechi Eze have started.

On current evidence, if Spurs are to win games this season, particularly against teams of PSG's calibre, it will come by narrow margins. Frank will maximise set-pieces and make this Spurs side harder to beat, but a familiar debate at Spurs could soon emerge.

Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte prioritised results over style. Nuno Espirito Santo did little to excite during his fleeting visit to the Spurs dugout. Ange Postecoglou, at least before the Premier League form collapsed, had his swashbuckling style to fall back on. Sections of the fanbase were to an extent willing to forgive the team shipping goals and dropping points while being entertained.

The hope will be that Frank can strike a middle ground. He deserves the necessary time and patience to try and do so, but there is a need for him to hit the ground running with results. A European trophy in his first competitive match would earn some early goodwill.

Defeat to PSG, though, particularly after such a poor showing against Bayern, would pile the pressure on Spurs ahead of the Premier League opener against Burnley. The Clarets had a remarkable defensive record in the Championship last season and will provide an immediate test of Spurs' ability to break teams down.

With Kulusevski and Maddison injured, Heung-min Son no longer at the club and Dominic Solanke having endured an injury-hit summer to date, Spurs need a talisman to step up and provide the spark in the final third.

Mohammed Kudus' pre-season displays have suggested he could be that player. He has caught the eye on the right wing but could be used as a No10 to help solve that particular headache for Frank.

Sarr has done a decent job in that role, but Kudus would offer the unpredictability and attacking spark that has been missing for much of pre-season.

Until that cutting edge is displayed by this Spurs side on a regular basis, the scrutiny on results will only increase. Frank knows that is his new reality.

Practical magic reboot

Spurs qualified for this one-off showdown by lifting the Europa League in Bilbao last season, ending their 17-year trophy drought in the process. But plenty has changed at the club since then, namely Ange Postecoglou being replaced by Thomas Frank.

It has been a summer of mixed results for Tottenham, who have experienced the highs of beating Arsenal, the lows of a 4-0 defeat at Bayern Munich, and the anonymity of a goalless draw at Luton Town in their pre-season outings.

It is a baptism of fire for Frank, who will hope to pull off a shock upset in his first competitive outing as Spurs’ head coach.

It has been a challenging summer for PSG, who were beaten finalists in July’s Club World Cup final and have not played since.

They cruised to a first Champions League title last season and will hope to revive that form in Udine as they chase another European honour.

Date, kick-off time and venue

PSG vs Tottenham is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off tonight, Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

The match will take place at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine.

PSG vs Tottenham team news

Thomas Frank has confirmed Dominic Solanke is fit after missing all but one pre-season game with an ankle injury.

Destiny Udogie has also been deemed fit to fly, though is unlikely to feature. Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma has not made the trip to Italy due to a disciplinary issue.

PSG’s pre-match camp has been rocked by the news of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s absence. The towering Italian has been left out of the squad amid reports he is set to leave the club this summer.

New signing Lucas Chevalier is set to start between the sticks.

Joao Neves is suspended for the tie after he was sent off in the Club World Cup final for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.

PSG vs Tottenham prediction

Frank has his work cut out for him in this, the first competitive outing of his Tottenham tenure.

PSG, at their best, are unplayable, as demonstrated when they tore Inter Milan limb from limb in the Champions League final earlier this year.

They were effectively neutralised, though, by Chelsea in the Club World Cup final. Frank is renowned as an astute tactician and could also find a way to throw a spanner in PSG machine.

But that is a tall ask against a star-studded side. It will take something spectacular for Spurs to bring a second trophy of the year back to north London.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

This will be the first competitive meeting between PSG and Tottenham.

They met in a friendly in summer 2017, which Spurs won 4-2 thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, and Harry Kane. Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani were on target for the French, though Kevin Trapp was sent off.

Description

Spurs have the opportunity to lift another European trophy in Udine when they face Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

A 22-man squad was submitted by Spurs for the match which included Bissouma, however Thomas Frank revealed at his pre-match press conference that the midfielder has now been punished for repeatedly being late.

Pressed on what those reasons were, Frank added: "He's been late several times and now this time, the latest time, was one too many.

"I think with everything you need to give your players a lot of love. [But] also have demands and also needs to be consequences, and this time there was a consequence for that."

Bissouma has started only one pre-season match for Spurs this summer, lining up against Luton last month when the club played two fixtures on the same day.

Spurs begin their Premier League campaign at home to Burnley on Saturday and Frank provided no guarantee that Bissouma will come straight back into the squad when asked what the midfielder needed to do to repair the relationship.

"And then I'll follow up when I come home. I park it now because there's a relatively important game for tomorrow."

Tottenham squad list for UEFA Super Cup confirmed as Solanke decision made - London Evening Standard
Description

Spurs head to Udine on Tuesday as they look to win their second major piece of silverware in a little over two months, having previously gone 17 years without lifting a trophy before winning last season's Europa League. It had been 41 years since they won a European title.

Wednesday evening will see Spurs take on Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, considered by many to be the best team in the world, in the traditional curtain-raiser to the European season.

It will be Thomas Frank's first competitive game in charge of Spurs, and he will arguably face no tougher test this term.

The new head coach has been boosted by the possible returns to fitness of Solanke and Udogie. The striker and left-back were not able to feature during most of pre-season due to injury, both missing the tour of Asia and last week's loss at Bayern Munich.

The pair have been included in the 22-man squad list submitted by Spurs to UEFA. At the same time, there is no place for the six injured first-team players James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Kota Takai.

James Maddison has been ruled out for the majority of the season as the knee injuries pile up

Tottenham can this week win their second piece of silverware inside three months but face a growing injury list ahead of the start of the new season.

Another prize for winning last season’s Europa League is a date with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. The two trophy-winners will face off in Udine on Wednesday.

But Spurs are sweating on the fitness of Dominic Solanke and first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie, and have lost creative king James Maddison for the majority of the season due to a serious knee injury.

Will Spurs get some positive news this week on injuries? Here’s a look at the latest Tottenham injury news…

Training: Dominic Solanke in training earlier this summer

Tottenham Hotspur/YouTube

Dominic Solanke

Tottenham remain hopeful that Dominic Solanke will be fit for the start of the new season despite missing all but one of the club’s pre-season friendlies with an ankle injury.

The initial prognosis was positive as Solanke joined the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia, where they beat Arsenal and then drew 1-1 with Newcastle, but the striker was unable to play a single minute. Frank said in Hong Kong: “Dominic is unfortunately not quite ready. He’s taking slightly a bit longer. Again, not overly concerned.”

Frank days later said he was "positive" Solanke would face Bayern, but after another no-show, Frank insisted Solanke will "be available quite soon".

Destiny Udogie

Tottenham are likely to be without Destiny Udogie for the opening weeks of the season after the left-back suffered a knee injury last month.

Udogie was left out of the Spurs squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, having been omitted from the friendly win over Luton after he “felt something in the warm-up”.

Thomas Frank confirmed a few days later: “Destiny got a knee injury that we're assessing at the moment that just kept him out for this pre-season tour. When we know more, we'll update more."

Asked for an update in Munich, Frank said: "I'm not worried. We'll know more info in a couple of days."

Potential return date: Unknown

Out: Dejan Kulusevski has been sidelined since May

REUTERS

Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski was struck down with a serious knee injury in May which required surgery to his patella.

When asked for an update in July, Thomas Frank said of the midfielder: "I don’t like to put a timeline on it [but] put it this way: he’s not ready for the first game of the season."

Little has been heard from Kulusevski until last week when Kulusevski posted a photo on social media of him juggling a football with his feet alongside the caption: "First time since May."

Frank moved to temper any expectations on an imminent return following the defeat at Bayern, telling reporters: "Kulusevski is out for a long time, which I spoke about before."

Potential return date: Late 2025

James Maddison

Tottenham were dealt a major blow on the eve of the new season with James Maddison suffering an ACL injury.

Maddison ruptured his ACL in last week’s pre-season friendly against Newcastle and Spurs have confirmed the midfielder is due to undergo surgery.

Spurs have not put a timeframe on how long Maddison will be out but he is set for a long spell on the sidelines, in a huge setback for Spurs ahead of the new season.

A Spurs statement last week read: “His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.

“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.”

Potential return date: April 2026

Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin has been sidelined since January after suffering an ACL injury against Elfsborg in the Europa League, and soon underwent surgery.

The defender recently confirmed that his rehabilitation is going well and he is involved in all the meetings and tactical discussions with Thomas Frank despite being unable to join training with his new manager.

"I had to learn how to walk again. I was on crutches, my knee was really stiff from the surgery. It was a long process but, once I got back to normal walking, it became a positive journey.

He added: "But honestly, I just want to be back on the pitch training with the boys again. I can't wait to be back. I've been working hard, on and off the pitch, with the fitness staff. Once I'm fully fit, I can't wait to be back with the boys and back for the matches too."

Potential return date: Late 2025

Kota Takai

Summer signing Kota Takai has been sidelined since his arrival, having been struck down with a heel injury.

Takai was absent from the early-summer friendlies against Reading, Wycombe and Luton, before Thomas Frank confirmed: "Kota got a plantar fascia injury, unfortunately we don't know the scale of it - weeks."

Takai has not been seen since and looks to face a lengthy spell recovering.

Potential return date: Unknown

Manor Solomon

Manor Solomon had hoped to make an impression on new Spurs head coach Thomas Frank this summer, having enjoyed a very productive season on loan at Leeds, but an injury ruled him out of every pre-season friendly.

Neither club not manager has confimred the nature of the injury, but Solomon's time at Spurs has been littered with fitness issues, most significantly a knee injury during his first season at the club.

Potential return date: Unknown

Bryan Gil

Bryan Gil faces another uncertain summer after seeing his season on loan at Girona end in March with a knee ligament injury.

The Spain international underwent surgery immediately and his been sidelined since, which saw Girona opt against triggering their £13million option to make the loan move permanent.

Gil has since returned to Hotspur Way to continue his rehabilitation.

Potential return date: Unknown
