Villarreal boss gives Thomas Partey update amid Tottenham Champions League tie and court hearing - Football London
Description

Thomas Partey could play for Villarreal in the Champions League against Tottenham on Tuesday evening despite an appearance the following day at Southwark Crown Court to answer rape charges.

The Spanish club signed Partey as a free agent after his contract at Arsenal expired this past summer. He has made four competitive appearances for his new club with a total of 139 minutes played in La Liga.

He also played 90 minutes for Ghana in their 1-0 World Cup qualification win over Mali during the September international break.

Partey, 32, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The alleged offences occurred between 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police said.

Partey was granted bail in August after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court just a few days before joining Villarreal.

His next hearing after that was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 2 at the Old Bailey but was adjourned. He is now set for a return to north London tonight as Villarreal face Spurs in their first Champions League clash of the new campaign at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I’m totally convinced that he is mentally prepared and technically prepared to play,” Villarreal boss Marcelino Garcia Toral said at his Monday press conference when discussing Partey.

“For sure he’ll be ready. We are really happy that Thomas is with us for his football capacity and ability and his presence as a human. He’s a great player with lots of experience. He’s played in some top sides. We know he’s got a great ability and great level.

“I think he ended last season and started this season well. He settled in during pre-season really, really well. I think he will get back to his top level which we all know that he’s got and I’m very happy he’s with us in the team.”

Marcelino was frequently asked Partey questions by the English media which prompted him to say, “we are talking more about Thomas than the game”.

“We’re interpreting stuff and talking about a player that could be totally innocent,” he later added. “We’re playing a game of football tomorrow where the important thing is football. This is where football was invented, after all.

“Thomas is with the group. He’s available. And then tomorrow, if nothing happens to the player in terms of fitness, he will be with all of us.”

The Champions League is finally back in business, and Tottenham Hotspur will be kicking off another European journey with a trophy under their arms and some swagger to go with it.

Thomas Frank will kick off his first season in charge of Spurs with a visit from Villarreal in Europe, as the London outfit competes in the elite competition for the first time since 2023. Spurs will host the La Liga side at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first of a six-game slog across 18 days - meaning fans are in for a wild ride.

The Lilywhites will be aiming for a positive start in the European competition, after making it three wins out of four in the Premier League so far. This has Frank's squad sitting pretty in second place, after a 3-0 thrashing of West Ham United helped them climb above north London rivals Arsenal on goal difference alone.

The new Champions League format is similar to the domestic league, with points tallied across a phase of 36 teams rather than clubs grouped into fours. The first eight teams will automatically qualify for the knockout stages, with the next 16 sides heading into a play-off round.

While Spurs have some confidence heading into the Champions League, Villarreal will be hoping to bounce back from La Liga disappointment after falling to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Atletico Madrid. Marcelino's side has won two, drawn won and lost one game so far in the league, placing them sixth in the table.

Villarreal will be hoping to see more success in the Champions League after making it all the way to the semi-finals in 2022 - meanwhile Spurs aim for another European journey filled with excitement and hopefully, silverware. Ahead of kick-off, here is everything you need to know about following one of many European games on Tuesday night.

Description

Tottenham are back in the Champions League for the 2025/26 season with Spanish side Villarreal as their first opponents. Spurs' bright start under new head coach Thomas Frank continued this past Saturday as they beat London rivals West Ham 3-0.

From their opening four Premier League games, the Lilywhites have taken nine points, kept three clean sheets, and conceded just once. Focus will now switch to Europe, with Frank asked if his side can go all the way.

"I believe I have a fantastic squad, and we would like to go as far as possible," he said at a press conference, previewing the clash.

"When you’re in a competition, you ultimately want to try and win it, but I think the most important thing is one game at a time. We have a game against Villarreal tomorrow. A very good team. I have been very impressed when I have studied them, but we will do everything we can to get a good start."

Frank has the bulk of his Tottenham squad available, but Dominic Solanke is set to remain out with an ankle injury. Randal Kolo Muani could be handed his first minutes in a Spurs shirt, and Frank confirmed he would be able to feature after being an unused substitute at the London Stadium this past weekend.

Mathys Tel started the game with Richarlison - a late returner from Brazil duty - on the bench while Xavi Simons started on the left. With Spurs likely to have more of the ball, the latter could be shifted into a central role while one of Brennan Johnson or Wilson Odobert comes into the team.

Considering the tight turnaround and available options, defensive changes also look likely. Micky van de Ven, given his injury issues, could be given the night off especially with Kevin Danso more than capable of starting in his place and he has hinted at exactly that on social media.

Via his Instagram story, Danso uploaded a matchday graphic promoting the fixture, which is more often than not an action completed by a player set to be involved.

A change at left-back is also possible with Destiny Udogie back available and seemingly ready to challenge Djed Spence for the position. Elsewhere in the backline, it is almost guaranteed that Romero will start and the Spurs captain has also furthered the likelihood of that, courtesy of his Instagram activity.

Late on Monday, Romero posted a graphic showing all the important bits of information needed for Tottenham's clash with Villarreal. He and Danso have never started as a centre-back pairing in a competitive game but could do on Tuesday evening.

Following their Champions League outing, Spurs take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium with games against Wolves and Leeds United in the Premier League following that. Before the October international break, Spurs face Bodo/Glimt in their second European league stage game while also taking on Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

Description

Thomas Frank will continue to use his full squad as Tottenham return to Champions League football with the visit of Villarreal on Tuesday night.

Spurs come into the game off a 3-0 derby win at West Ham United and amid a busy run of games every three to four days they will welcome their La Liga visitors before making the trip to Brighton on Saturday afternoon as the Premier League continues. It means Frank will need to trust his squad across three games in a week, with the rest of the month constantly bringing more of the same until the next international break.

"I think it's important that I trust my players. Of course they need to perform and train well and show the right attitude and all that, but they do and they train well," Frank said on Saturday. "So I have the privilege to, for example, rest Rodri. Of course he could have played today. But he played two 90 minutes, he landed Thursday morning. So I'm not too worried about this, but what about Tuesday? What about the next one? And they can't play 70 games, all of them, all the time. Rodri is a key player for us.

"Richy is the same. He could have started but also played in 4,000m height against Bolivia and so on, and then others have done well."

Bentancur and Richarlison are therefore expected to start against Villarreal and Destiny Udogie will likely come in against the Spanish side. Frank will also have to decide whether one of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven needs a rest to reduce the risk of losing one of them to injury like last season or whether that comes at the Amex Stadium this weekend.

There are also decisions galore to be made in midfield with Lucas Bergvall deserving to start again after his goal and assist, while Pape Matar Sarr also scored and impressed and Joao Palhinha provides an important defensive shield to the backline but also could need a rest after plenty of football following a long period without it.

In the attacking areas, Xavi Simons could get a chance in the number 10 role after his debut on the left, while Brennan Johnson will be pushing for a start. Mohammed Kudus will need to be rested at some point rather than be run into the ground with so many games over the coming weeks. Randal Kolo Muani could also make his debut for the club with his own Champions League experience.

The Carabao Cup game against League One side Doncaster Rover at home next week also presents the chance to rest some players and give others some minutes.

Here's the team we reckon Frank could select to face Villarreal:

Tottenham team news for Villarreal clash as Thomas Frank ponders two headaches - Football London
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for a long-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, and Thomas Frank has a big job in picking his starting XI for the game.

Spurs will take on Villarreal at 8pm on Tuesday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following their Europa League triumph last season, with the aim of making it four wins from five in Frank's early tenure as boss. The Lilywhites defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the final to lift their first trophy in 17 years.

Now, new boss Frank will be looking to do one better than Ange Postecoglou and push Spurs to the pinnacle of European glory in the Champions League. However, the Dane will have a bit of a selection headache ahead of the opening game of the campaign, with a few important stars missing.

Spurs beat London rivals West Ham United 3-0 at the weekend thanks to second-half goals from Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven. A Tomas Soucek red card in the 54th minute helped the away team on their quest for victory, but there was some trouble for Frank to contend with before the match even began.

For Spurs' 1-0 loss to Bournemouth prior to the international break, Dominic Solanke was left out of the matchday squad due to an ankle issue, as confirmed by the manager. It seems as though he wasn't able to shake off the problem, as Frank told the media ahead of the trip to the London Stadium that he wouldn't be available.

He said: "Everyone returned from international duty well. Always positive, very happy about that. Dom will not be available still, I don't expect it to be too long but he will not be available for this game.

"I think right now we are doing everything we can – the medical team - to get on top of it and that’s what we’re focusing on. I get a feeling he is not too far away, but he’s just fallen short for this week."

This means Solanke will now be racing for fitness to appear in his first Champions League game for Tottenham, but while Frank believes he isn't "too far away," Villarreal may be a bit too soon for the English striker.

Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison are all unavailable for the foreseeable future due to significant injuries, leaving Frank with few attacking options. Xavi Simons made his first appearance for the Lilywhites on Saturday, providing the assist for the team's first goal and impressing in 71 minutes of action.

He was pushed out to the left wing to accommodate 19-year-old Bergvall, who proved his worth in his manager's decision to select him for the game, scoring and assisting to lead the team to victory. While Simons is more suited to an attacking midfielder role, Bergvall shone in this position on Saturday and looks to have done enough to receive the nod on Tuesday night.

Richarlison and Mathys Tel seem to be Frank's current striking options - with Solanke out for the time being - and both were given minutes against West Ham, with Tel handed the starting position over the Brazilian.

However, the Frenchman isn't in Spurs' squad for the Champions League, so it is likely Richarlison will gain this starting spot back without much of a fight. Sarr and Mohamed Kudus look to be operating the right-hand side well with Pedro Porro shoring up the defensive duties at right-back, with new England international Djed Spence handling the left full-back role with ease.

Guglielmo Vicario is one Spurs star who looks to have nailed on his starting spot between the sticks, alongside captain Cristian Romero and his centre-back partner Van de Ven. With some choices to be made in midfield and up front, Frank may well see the confidence growing in his squad from their victory over West Ham and choose to stick with this plan for their next match.

However, some impressive players remained on the bench during the Premier League win - including Rodrigo Bentancur and Randal Kolo Muani - with Brennan Johnson and Destiny Udogie making sub appearances to gain minutes.

Speaking after the match, Frank was honest about resting some important players ahead of the Champions League opener, but admitted rotation will be key to success for Spurs this season.

Praising the ability to change up his squad and still get results, the 51-year-old said: "I think it's extremely important. It's important that I trust my players. Of course, they need to perform and train well and show the right attitude and all that, but they do and they train well. So, I have the privilege to, for example, rest Rodri [Bentancur].

"Of course, he could have played today, but he played two 90 minutes, he landed [from South America] Thursday morning. So, I'm not too worried about this, but what about Tuesday? What about the next one? And they can't play 70 games, all of them, all the time. Rodri is a key player for us. Richy is the same.

"He could have started but also played in 4,000m height against Bolivia and so on, and then others have done well. Lucas, look how he came on the pitch, and how he performed as well. I think Mathys, very impressive, the performance was maybe not through the roof, but it was very solid, I would say 7/10, worked hard, pressing, constant pressing, and that's very good also. You know he's not in the Champions League squad. I'm very happy with the squad."

Much of Frank's side picks itself, with the midfield providing the most headaches both centrally and out on the left. Bergvall's form maintains his place in our predicted team, with Sarr the unfortunate one to drop out.

Thomas Frank admits he made a wrong decision with Tottenham and provides Dominic Solanke update - Football London
Description

Thomas Frank is looking forward to his first experience of the Champions League and he spoke in a press conference about his debut at the helm in the competition as Tottenham host Villarreal.

The 51-year-old made the move from Brentford in the summer and after taking the Bees into the Premier League by consistently punching above their weight, the Dane will now take the next step up in the game in managing in the biggest club competition in Europe on Monday night.

Villarreal will present a tough challenge with the La Liga side having started their campaign well and including a smattering of players in their team who have previously played for clubs in north London and one who is still employed by Spurs in Manor Solomon, who joined on loan on deadline day and is eligible to face his parent club due to UEFA rules.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Frank ahead of the Champions League match against the Spanish side on Tuesday night. Here's the full transcript from Monday's press conference at Hotspur Way.

After all your years in management, what does it mean personally to manage in Champions League for first time?

Obviously it’s a big thing. I am hugely looking forward to it. I know it will be special when we have that Champions League anthem playing. That will be the moment. Now is preparation, a few cameras, business as usual but when we walk out onto the pitch tomorrow that will be very special.

This group know how to win in Europe – have you got a squad that can go all the way?

I believe I have a fantastic squad and we would like to go as far as possible. When you’re in a competition, you ultimately want to try and win it, but I think the most important thing is one game at a time. We have a game against Villarreal tomorrow. A very good team. I have been very, very impressed when I have studied them, but we will do everything we can to get a good start.

It's a huge moment for you – but also for Villarreal, they are enjoying a resurgence, what do you know about this team and their manager – who believes in building a team of good people like you?

Huge respect for Marcelino. I think he has done a top job. You can see his team is well structure, well organised. The way they play, they like to dominate as much as possible on the ball and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen. It’s going to be a good challenge.

Are you a fan of the format of the new league phase?

I think in general I am a person that is open for different things. I saw it from the outside last year and now I need to try and live it. For now it looks interesting and promising. I think no matter the format it is a Champions League game tomorrow and we look forward to that and we’ll do everything we can to win it.

Do you have an idea of how many points you need to get through?

I don’t focus on that. I focus on one thing and that is let’s see if we can beat Villarreal tomorrow. That is the most important thing. After that we play Brighton so one game at a time.

Tell us about your journey to this point, you started at Griffin Park in Championship and now about to manage in Champions League?

Of course it is a fantastic opportunity and experience tomorrow. In many ways you would say yes we played with Brentford in the Championships at Griffin Park, a small, compact stadium and tomorrow we are playing in one of the best stadiums in the world – maybe the best. In front of our fantastic fans, it is a European night and we know they will be absolutely on it. It will be so special, so yeah really looking forward to the first two minutes, the Champions League anthem and then it’s (now) focus on the game.

What would you have done differently against Bournemouth with hindsight?

First and foremost I would just like to win it, that would be easier. But no, I think that was a bad performance and it definitely didn’t get better when I watched it back. I always try to look myself at what I could have done better, so I didn’t think I helped the players well enough in that game.

Took the wrong decision in terms of the planning - not that we didn’t have a plan for phase one and phase two, but that was the bit where we should have done more in this game. If we didn’t do anything that was the biggest thing. Then I would say that big respect to Bournemouth, they are a very difficult and tricky team to play against. So they did very well, they hit a top level and we didn’t hit a good level. That’s a bad combination, that bit. We learn from it and move forward.

What are your early memories of the Champions League?

Of course watched a lot of Champions League games. [When did it change from European Cup to Champions League?] Maybe it was the Champions League but I definitely remember that one in ‘92 because that was the one against Barcelona against Sampdoria in the final, where Michael Laudrup played and Ronald Koeman scored a fantastic free-kick. So some standout games and finals. Of course we all remember the ‘99 Man United treble. The fantastic, crazy win against Bayern. The Liverpool-Milan 3-3. There’s so many Champions League memories. So many big games.

What's the latest on Dominic Solanke and how minutes is Randal Kolo Muani able to play?

Dom is taking steps in the right direction. So that is positive. As you saw out there [that he was not involved in training], he is not ready to be involved tomorrow.

Randal Kolo Muani is ready. How many minutes? They can always play more minutes than we think. If we needed him to play he could play 90 minutes but can he play at the intensity and the level we want? He is ready and he is involved tomorrow and that is the most important thing.

You have come up with specific tactical plans for different teams this season, how do you do that with such a tight turn around between games and only a couple of days to prepare now the Champions League is about to start?

That’s a good question. The main thing is we have some guiding principles on how we want to defend for example. So I think it’s relatively clear to everyone that we want to go man-to-man in the high pressure, that’s no secret. That needs to be tweaked depending on the opponent. That could be a small adjustment there, the middle pressure, the low pressure but if we have guiding principles it hopefully helps the players.

Then the same with the offensive side of the game. How we want to break through. How we want to build up. But of course depending on the opponent, they may press in different ways and then maybe we need to tweak a little bit if we build up in a 4-1 or a 4-2. Whatever you call it, what kind of solutions do we find out to use? We try to get that across to the players with videos, walkthroughs, with some 11v11. With different ways of doing it.

I’m a big believer in can we get the right details across in the right amount because I don’t believe being out there for two hours or having one hour meetings. So it is how can we do that balance to give them some good guidance and then they are top players. So we give them good guidelines and then they take decisions on the pitch and they are very good at that.

Every word Cristian Romero said on why he was punished in Tottenham training and Daniel Levy exit - Football London
Description

Cristian Romero had plenty to say about his decision to stay at Tottenham this summer, former chairman Daniel Levy and why he had to undergo a forfeit in training on Friday.

Ahead of Tottenham's return to the Champions League and their clash with Villarreal, the Argentine centre-back undertook his first press conference since arriving at Spurs in 2021. Romero was made captain and signed a new four-year deal this summer after a transfer window in which he was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid before committing his long-term future to Tottenham.

It is the tradition that the captain does the first European press conference of the season and the World Cup winner spoke at length about a range of topics, including his own comments about the club's decisions over the years and the changes at the top in recent weeks.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Romero ahead of the Champions League match against the La Liga side on Tuesday night. Here's the full transcript from Monday's press conference at Hotspur Way.

Are you looking forward to facing Juan Foyth?

Yeah, Juan, I know him really well. We played together in the under-20s and under-23s as well. We managed to spend time together in the national team as well. He's a great guy. He's a top player as well. A good person. He was here as well. It's going to be a special game for him as well, having played here. We wish him all the best. But we hope to prevail tomorrow.

Pepe has won the La Liga player of the month, beating Mbappe and Nico Williams, how will you deal with him?

We always focus on our jobs, our own work. We have a great manager at the moment. We have a defensive coach who works well with us. We've been three years with him (Matty Wells). We always want to try and improve. We started well. If you take Bournemouth out of the equation, we've done well.

It was unfortunate that we couldn't quite hold on for the last seven minutes in the final against Paris. But we always work hard preparing for the next game. We do our best, no matter who we're playing against.

It's all about trying to increase our performances, improve. As I say, we've known each other for quite a long time, the defence. We've played together, so we're experienced with each other. It's all about improving whenever we can and working hard.

We thought you were going to leave this summer - what changed?

Like I've said before, I spoke in an interview… sometimes in football, stuff comes out on social media and in the press in general. I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing ever came through me to that effect.

The most important thing is that what people say here at the club and what I say. People like the manager and the president here. It's important what they say, not anyone else. I'm very happy here. Tottenham for me is a family, one big family. The first day that I arrived here, they gave everything to me.

I'm really happy since Thomas has arrived. He took his decision to lengthen my contract, to extend my contract. I was happy at the club. I like the manager that has arrived. I like the way that we're working, the way that we train together. Of course, always things can improve.

That's what we always try and do. That's what we have to do, day to day. But I think everyone is taking the right decisions here at the club, at all levels, to make sure we're going in the right direction to achieve success. I'm very happy here and that's the key.

We saw you having to do press-ups in training with the manager, why was that?

(Laughs) We always have fun in the training sessions, irrespective of what game we've got coming up. I had to do some press-ups because I lost the ball in the rondo. It was a punishment for losing the ball too often in the passing exercise.

The important thing is tomorrow we're playing Champions League for the first time for two seasons and that makes everyone happy, doesn't it? Everyone in the group gives you that bit of excitement. The staff, the technical team. We really want to start off on the right foot tomorrow. That's the main thing.

Lionel Messi - will he play in the World Cup, do you know? It could be a huge year for you personally with the Champions League and World Cup?

I can answer about Leo, I think he’s fit, I think he could easily take part. It’s his decision. We all enjoy playing with him, we all enjoy watching him play. For me, and for people who know about football, I think he’s the biggest player in history.

I love having him as a team-mate in the dressing room and sharing moments with him. We've had some very happy times together. Of course, I think he's going to be right for the World Cup. Of course he is.

As for the rest and the season, I think I go by day-to-day. Tomorrow we have a massive game, a very key game for us. My head's focused on that game.

When I'm with the national team, it's still a long time before we start thinking about the World Cup. Lots of months ahead before that comes into the frame. It's all about concentrating on Tottenham and the game tomorrow. We've really got to get a win tomorrow night. That's very key.

You're a family but have you had any arguments yet as a family?

We've not had any up to now, to be fair. We've had a great start to the season. There's a lot where we can improve upon still. Of course, there are things to work on.

We've created a lovely group to work with. The previous manager, Ange, put this group together to start with and now Thomas has arrived. He's brought in new players as well and we're all fitting in nicely. Lots of young guys here now. Lots to learn and grow, but I think it's knitting together nicely.

I think when you are a family, like this off the field, it's much easier to achieve things on the field when there's that harmony off it.

You made a statement when Thomas arrived about obstacles that will always exist in Tottenham. Do you think that the obstacles from before don't exist now?

Yes, I did a lot of interviews right which seemed like I was talking badly about people inside the club but in the end I'm a person who sometimes makes mistakes and that’s it. I always want the best for the club.

Sometimes, things have been said that aren't true as well, but always everything I said is because I want there to be a structure of a club that can be at the top level, part of the big clubs. That's why I was sometimes so angry before, but today I see a very, very organised club with a clear idea and a coach who is organising things and everyone is seeing that in a short space of time we are with him and that’s it.

Absolutely everyone inside is looking in the same direction and that is the important thing. We hope obviously to continue like this. There are objectives for the season but as I said before our heads are in tomorrow’s game. We are going to enjoy that we’re back in the Champions League, that’s the most important thing. I see a fantastic group, a coach, who leaves us with a clear idea. The group is very happy and we have to go game by game but I believe we can achieve great things. We hope and we are going to fight to lift another trophy.

What does success mean to Tottenham? Are you happy to be fifth in the league or do you want to win another trophy?

Sure, yeah. You always compete at the highest level to try and win. It would be easy to sit here and say 'yeah, we're prepared to try and win everything that's ahead of us', but you need to be realistic too.

It's all about competing, taking each game as it comes, fighting hard, have that spirit, that real winning mentality. The last thing that you ever lose is hope. We've got a fantastic group, we've got a manager, as I said before, he's got clear plans and clear ideas.

The group's very happy and at ease with itself. I think we feel within ourselves that we can achieve big things. It would be amazing if we could lift another trophy, of course, for all of us and the fans too.

What kind of captain are you, Cuti? Ange once said that when Sonny was at the Asian Cup, you stepped up and brought all the different groups together in the squad.

I think that I try and bring everyone together, of course. It's the first time in my career that I'm an official captain, it's something new. I've got a lot to learn about the role, but I'm fortunate enough to have shared a dressing room with people in my national team, some top leaders in the club and in the national team as well, so I can take bits from those examples. It's always a lot easier when everyone is moving in the same direction.

When you are like a family from the inside, it makes things a lot easier. It's hard to keep everyone happy, because obviously everyone wants to play and there are some players, according to the situation, playing more minutes than others, but the group, as I say, is fantastic. It's a lovely atmosphere in the place. I think it's going to be a lot easier for things to turn out well with that family spirit that we're creating.

What are your thoughts on Daniel Levy's departure from the club for 25 years?

I don't know what's happened, but it's not something I've had the chance to speak with him personally, but he's a person who's been at the club for a good many years. We need to thank him, because he's the person who brought me here to Spurs.

Fortunately, we could crown his reign with a trophy, which would have made everyone happy, including him. I just desire the very best for him, and it's his decision, and we wish him all the best.

You spoke about 'the people responsible' in December, do you think the new CEO will change the club's ambition?

As I said before it’s a bit of everything, it’s about the group of players, the coaching staff, the people that work for us, the executives obviously, in the end it depends on everyone that we pull in the same direction. I think that since Thomas arrived here, they have started to take all those decisions to go in the same direction. And then when it’s like that, everything runs a lot more easily right? The players know what the objectives are for the season and we continue like this. We started to improve and we want another title this season. We hope to carry on like this, improving, working all together to achieve the objectives.

As a captain, with your aggressive style pf play, do you have to have more control in your game?

No, no. I think I get a bad rep, but my way of playing is something that I learned as a child. They taught me to defend like this when I was a kid in Argentina and I have it inside me, that love of playing this sport. When I step onto the pitch, for me I don't have friends, I don't have absolutely anything. It's just defending what I wear, my shirt, my badge. It happened last year when I had a run-in with Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea. Then I showed a little bit that I always defend my own, that I always just want to win, and unfortunately I had a run-in with him, but it’s nothing, it's just my way of playing. It's something that’s in my blood, that’s it. I've got to where I’ve got to today because of it so why would I change? So I have to keep going like this, improving, learning a lot and with a calm head know I’m doing things right.

Cristian Romero has insisted he never wanted to leave Tottenham amid constant rumours linking the defender with a summer exit.

The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer and it was uncertain whether the centre-back would be playing his football at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the 2025/26 season. With Ange Postecoglou departing after the Europa League success in May, Thomas Frank was appointed and one of the Dane's biggest priorities was ensuring the Argentina defender stayed put.

In the end, Romero signed a new four-year deal with the club and was appointed captain by Frank. Speaking ahead of Tottenham's Champions League clash with Villareal, Romero admitted he is "very happy" at Spurs.

The World Cup winner said: "Sometimes in football, stuff comes out on social media and in the press in general. I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing ever came through me to that effect.

"The most important thing is that what people say here at the club and what I say. People like the manager and the president here. It's important what they say, not anyone else. I'm very happy here. Tottenham for me is a family, one big family. The first day that I arrived here, they gave everything to me.

"I'm really happy since Thomas has arrived. He took his decision to lengthen my contract, to extend my contract. I was happy at the club. I like the manager that has arrived. I like the way that we're working, the way that we train together. Of course, always things can improve.

"That's what we always try and do. That's what we have to do, day to day. But I think everyone is taking the right decisions here at the club, at all levels, to make sure we're going in the right direction to achieve success. I'm very happy here and that's the key."

Romero is expected to start against Villarreal on Tuesday and Frank will be keen to get off to the best possible start in Europe. With games against PSG and Borussia Dortmund to come, three points against the La Liga side could be vital.

"Big thing, hugely looking forward to it," Frank told reporters. "Hearing the Champions League anthem, that will be the moment. Now it's about preparing for it."

He added: "It's a new experience tomorrow in many ways. We played in the Championship with Brentford at Griffin Park in a small stadium. Tomorrow we will be in one of the best stadiums in the world playing in the Champions League."

The Tottenham players were in high spirits in training on Monday afternoon ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal.

Thomas Frank and his coaching staff led the Spurs squad through their work in preparation for the opening European fixture on Tuesday but there was plenty of time for laughter in the more relaxed moments of the session at the club's Hotspur Way training complex in Enfield with the Dane playing his part in instigating it.

The training session, which took place in driving rain for periods, was open for the media to observe for 15 minutes as the players went through a couple of different drills.

Here are some different things we spotted during the period of time we got to watch the training session at Hotspur Way.

Who was missing?

The main first team players missing from the session were Dominic Solanke and Kota Takai in terms of those who were meant to be close to returning but clearly are not yet.

Some of the longer term injured players could be seen continuing to work on their rehabilitation in the gym, including James Maddison, who stood against the window and looked out forlornly at one point, as well as Dejan Kulusevski and Yves Bissouma.

During the media's time around the training pitches, neither Solanke nor Takai could be spotted either on the pitch or in the big glass-sided gym.

There were also a group of young academy players who appeared later in the session and were taken by first team pathway coach Stuart Lewis to do some work on a separate pitch.

Dragusin's different plan

One of the players who was involved but isn't registered to play tomorrow was Radu Dragusin. The big Romanian has recently returned to training after eight months out with the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against Elfsborg in the Europa League in January.

While the centre-back took part in certain elements of training, he was taken out of the group when they started a big rondo featuring slide tackles and high energy pressing. Dragusin didn't look delighted about being taken away but threw himself into some individual drills with one of the sports science staff on a separate pitch before re-joining the group as the reporters' time watching ended.

What they did

This was only a snapshot of training and the media had to wait briefly before entering the pitch area to allow Frank to finish off some tactical work with his Spurs players.

What the reporters got to see was passing drills and a very energetic rondo with players sliding in, including Lucas Bergvall flying into a challenge in the rain towards Joao Palhinha that thankfully stopped just short of the jumping Portuguese.

It might just have brought a flashback for the summer signing after Thomas Soucek's lunge on Saturday which resulted in a red card for the West Ham midfielder.

Romero fun

The Tottenham captain was often at the centre of the fun in the rondo section of the training session. He spent various periods in the middle and rather than being the one bringing the aggressive moves, he occasionally found himself on the end of them.

Pape Matar Sarr launched towards Romero at one point and after the ball had gone pushed his skipper from behind over and on to the wet grass. The media were all expecting a reaction but with Sarr someone Romero is often grabbing and teasing, similar to the Senegal midfielder's relationship with Richarlison, the Argentine just sat up and grinned at his team-mate.

There were plenty of flicks and tricks during the rondo but it did result in a punishment for the club captain.

Romero's punishment

Whatever the reason, perhaps for having to go into the middle of the rondo more than others, Romero had to complete a set of push-ups as a punishment afterwards with Frank watching very closely and counting as did some of his team-mates.

They were not the perfect set of push-ups but the rain-soaked Argentine got away with them and when he got up from the ground his head coach was laughing loudly and the pair hugged for a little while before walking off arm in arm for a spell.
