Why Tottenham embarrassed Daniel Levy again and what Ange Postecoglou did as Djed Spence lost it - Football London
Description

Even at 1-0 up there was barely a celebration from Tottenham. Not just because it would be slightly shameless to be happy when sitting so far down the Premier League table - especially after Manchester United picked up a point in the battle to not finish 17th - but because most people knew this was just a blip for Liverpool. It didn't take long for things to revert to expectation.

Liverpool were never going to be denied their crowning moment at home. Not after all the build-up and the hurt. There was such a sense of inevitability around this game that Dominic Solanke's early header really may as well have not happened.

Luis Diaz quickly equalised. Alexis Mac Allister put the hosts ahead. Two players Liverpool have signed in the past two years scored for a manager Tottenham had chased themselves. Recruitment and planning coming to the fore with brilliant coaching. It was in stark contrast to what Ange Postecoglou's side put on display.

Cody Gakpo made it 3-1 before the break with the second half played out in a sense of waiting for more to be scored. Could Mohamed Salah get his customary goal? Yes, of course. He would be missing out if he didn't score against Tottenham.

Destiny Udogie put through his own net soon after. Salah was there to score if not. He had just taken a selfie in front of the Kop. It was total mockery and cannot be disguised.

Amid it all were some moments that might have been missed on initial viewing. If you want to go through the pain of it, football.london has you covered.

Spence gets angry

Tottenham may well have taken an early lead but the dysfunction in the team was clear pretty much from the off. Liverpool found it far too easy to cut through the midfield and were in no mood to give up the acres of space afforded to them in transition.

With Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz they have willing runners who are quick enough to take advantage. It showed when the score was still 0-0.

Liverpool found an ocean of room on the left side as they raced into the Tottenham half. Salah streaked into it and saw Diaz there waiting ahead of him.

Kevin Danso was no match for the pace of either of them and the gap between Guglielmo Vicario in goal and the players sprinting towards him was giant. Salah sought to bend the pass into the corridor but Diaz got his wires crossed and had come short.

Tottenham got away with offering so much ground to the pair and Djed Spence, left for dead with a ball over the top initially, was only just coming into view when Tottenham recovered possession. He wasn't happy with the organisation.

Throwing his head back, Spence shouted at his teammates for the vacant midfield, the lack of pressure on the ball, and to the world in general. He was bemused at how easily Liverpool had created a nice opportunity and it wouldn't be the last time either.

Solanke's awkward moment

We mentioned Tottenham's response to stunning Anfield. Scored by a former Liverpool player, there were many reasons for the subdued reaction.

Maybe the Spurs players couldn't actually believe they were winning. Maybe they didn't really care. Either way, it was nice for Solanke to get a moment at Liverpool to show how he has come on.

After joining from Chelsea in 2017, Solanke only scored one Premier League goal for Liverpool. His stock dropped from being an academy prodigy and there was doubt over if he would ever reach the heights.

He took time to get to the £60million player Tottenham signed over the summer but when fit he has shown why there was such a price tag. Here, his well-directed header was evidence of his finishing skills and some.

Perhaps the muted celebration was out of respect or maybe it really was because Solanke knew just how embarrassing things have been and remain for Tottenham. The rest of the game would show that and his awkwardness with the rest of the team could not have been more clear.

On the bench and Postecoglou gave a little fist bump. He had been determined before the game not to just let Tottenham play a part in Liverpool's stroll towards the title. As it happened, they were hardly an obstacle at all and his high five with a member of the backroom staff was as good as it got.

Tottenham's midfield problem

Liverpool's well-crafted and well-coached midfield has experience in the Champions League and some in World Cup finals. It was signed for around £130million. It has been utilised spectacularly by Slot this season.

Tottenham, on the other hand, sent out two teenagers to try and deal with a ferocious atmosphere and high press. Archie Gray, who has had to spend most of his first year at the club playing at right-back or centre-back, was thrown into the middle of the pitch. Lucas Bergvall, a better carrier and progresses maker, went to his right.

James Maddison was in there but has been out of top form for over 12 months now. He looks a shadow of his former self and provided very little defensive help or link to the Spurs attack. They didn't seem like they knew each other, let alone had any cohesion.

It was telling that Mac Allister would put Liverpool ahead with a left-footed thunderbolt. Tottenham did not get close to him after failing to clear their lines twice.

Maddison dribbled himself into trouble by the touchline before turning and hacking the ball out. Mathys Tel picked it up and was put under pressure. His slash away went wide of Gray, who was outmuscled by Ryan Gravenberch on the edge of the box.

Mac Allister collected things from there and smashed one home. It was a goal with all of Tottenham's midfield outdone by two of Liverpool's trio as Bergvall could not prevent the shot with an attempted block.

At half-time Postecoglou made two changes, as has been a staple of late in attempts to keep the squad fit and fresh for the Europa League. Gray and Maddison were taken off in a telling turn of events. Rodrigo Bentancur had been kept out of the squad entirely with a rest day given and Pape Matar Sarr came on.

Dominik Szoboszlai surged through into a four-on-four in the 60th minute to help Salah make it 4-1. Another Liverpool midfielder having much better day than the Tottenham counterparts.

The manner in which this group have been built has been under the microscope all season, as has Daniel Levy's role in it all. Here, the team he has helped fund was truly out of its either through individual talent or setup, maybe, probably, both.

Viacrio's latest headloss

Tottenham's goalkeeper is emotive. Postecoglou has said as much himself. He wears his heart on his sleeve and then some. At Anfield he really was not ready to let the game slide.

After each goal he jumped to his feet to berate and to moan. He shouted, waved his arms like a mixture of a Mr Men cartoon and a robotic octopus. He was furious with the defending (or absence of) in front of him.

The most obvious came when Gakpo managed to worm away from three Tottenham bodies inside the box to score following a near-post corner. The Liverpool attacker held the ball under his foot after Solanke had failed to deal with the initial crosses. Brennan Johnson couldn't get rid either.

Maddison was slow to close down and then the shot is in the net. Vicario is up and off on one. Tottenham players start to hold another inquest as to what has gone on but it's no use with the game already looking to be out of reach and the damage in a broken team beyond repair.

Ange Postecoglou press conference LIVE - Tottenham boss on Liverpool defeat, defence and Gray - Football London
Description

Ange Postecoglou is speaking to the media following Tottenham's 5-1 Premier League defeat against Liverpool on Sunday. It was a result that saw the Reds clinch the Premier League title for only the second time.

Heading into the game on Merseyside, Postecoglou made a total of eight changes to his side as the likes of Archie Gray, Kevin Danso, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke came in. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were two players to drop down to the bench.

It was Spurs who took the lead at Anfield as Solanke silenced the home crowd with a superb header from Maddison's corner early on. However, the visitors would only be ahead for a total of four minutes as Luiz Diaz restored parity from close range.

Liverpool then took the lead through Alexis Mac Allister's powerful drive, before Cody Gakpo gave them a two-goal cushion with a well-taken strike. The Reds added further goals through Mohamed Salah and a Destiny Udogie own goal in the second half.

Our Spurs correspondent Rob Guest is among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the game. Scroll down for the latest updates from the press conference at Anfield.

Tottenham player ratings vs Liverpool - Gray struggles, Solanke impact, Udogie and two more poor - Football London
Description

Tottenham suffered their 19th league defeat of a dire season after Liverpool recorded a resounding 5-1 victory to wrap up the Premier League title. Following Monday night's 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest, Ange Postecoglou shuffled his pack at Anfield with Thursday's European encounter against Bodo/Glimt in mind.

The boss made eight changes in total, with players such as Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Kevin Danso and James Maddison coming into the side. Key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven started the game on the substitutes' bench. With all the talk heading into the game of Liverpool becoming 2024/25 Premier League champions, it was Spurs who struck first as Dominic Solanke powerfully headed home Maddison's inch-perfect corner.

Tottenham weren't ahead for long, though, as Luiz Diaz was on hand to convert from close range and the goal counted following a VAR check. The Reds then took the lead on 24 minutes as Alexis Mac Allister found the top corner of Guglielmo Vicario's with a stinging drive from outside the box.

It was to get even better for the Reds not long before half-time as Cody Gakpo added a third of the afternoon with a low effort into the bottom corner. Mohamed Salah was to get his goal just before the hour mark with a low drive into the bottom corner and a Destiny Udogie own goal extended the scoreline even further.

Here's how we rated the Tottenham players in the game on Merseyside:

Guglielmo Vicario

Not much he could do about Liverpool's three first-half goals. Saved low down from Ryan Gravenberch in the second half and denied Dominik Szoboszlai with a good save as the midfielder looked on course to net. Very shaky at times in possession of the ball and that benefited Liverpool. 4

Djed Spence

Switched over to right-back and was busy defensively with Liverpool in total control. Had a few forays forward but nothing much really came off for him. 5

Kevin Danso

Wasn't aware of Diaz coming off his shoulder for Liverpool's first goal of the afternoon. Busy throughout with the Reds putting Spurs under a lot of pressure. Had a shot in the second half that drifted wide of the target. 5

Ben Davies

Came in for Micky van de Ven and produced a good block from Trent Alexander-Arnold's drive not long before the break. Made a clearance after the restart as Andy Robertson's flick was on course to go in. 5

Destiny Udogie

Back in the team after missing out on the squad on Monday night and faced a hectic afternoon with Salah and Alexander-Arnold down his side of the pitch. Salah cut inside far too easily for his goal and then the Italian international netted an own goal with Liverpool's star man waiting to tap the ball into an empty net. 3

Archie Gray

Handed a rare chance in midfield and found it very tough at times against one of the Premier League's best midfield trios. Szoboszlai ran off him to tee up Diaz's opener and then he was outmuscled by Gravenberch for Mac Allister's goal midway through the first half, although it's fair to say it wasn't a great pass from Mathys Tel. Replaced at the break. 3

Lucas Bergvall

Active in midfield but produced a poor header from a corner that resulted in Gakpo making it three for the hosts. Kept going despite the scoreline as he tried to get the team moving forward. 5

James Maddison

Returned to the team and took on the captain's armband with Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero not in the starting XI. Started the game really brightly in the final third and got an assist to his name for Solanke's early goal. Always looked lively when on the ball as he tried to invent things. Replaced at the break. 6

Brennan Johnson

Made it too easy for Gakpo to come away with the ball prior to the Netherlands international scoring Liverpool's third of the afternoon. Put in a good ball prior to half-time that saw Ibrahima Konate come to the rescue as Tel looked on hand to convert. Didn't really offer much else in the final third. 4

Dominic Solanke

Back in the team and opened the scoring 12 minutes in with a thumping header from Maddison's delivery. Also played his part in winning the corner up against Konate. Battled well at times to cause Liverpool a few issues but no chances on goal after his header. 7

Mathys Tel

Got the nod to start in the front three once again and was lively down the left flank at times. Unfortunately had a role to play in Liverpool's second after his pass inside to Archie Gray was snaffled up by the Reds and Mac Allister duly found the top corner. 5

Substitutes

Pape Matar Sarr (Archie Gray, 46)

Introduced at the break and had a huge task on him trying to keep the Reds' midfield quiet. 5

Dejan Kulusevski (James Maddison, 46)

Lost the ball on the edge of the Liverpool box and it resulted in the Reds countering at speed and Salah scoring their fourth of the afternoon. 4

Wilson Odobert (Mathys Tel, 67)

Offered very little in attack. 4

Richarlison (Dominic Solanke, 67)

Why Luis Diaz offside goal was overturned in Liverpool vs Tottenham as VAR decision explained

Premier League release Tottenham VAR statement after Luis Diaz Liverpool incident - Football London
Description

Tottenham saw their surprise lead against Liverpool at Anfield last just a few minutes following a VAR intervention. The Premier League champions-elect went behind after 12 minutes when former striker Dominic Solanke nodded home a James Maddison corner.

Ange Postecoglou's side, despite wholesale changes before a European League semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glint, made a bright start and took the lead. However, that advantage lasted just four minutes when Luis Diaz tapped home a flowing move.

The linesman put his flag up in the immediate aftermath but a quick VAR check confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai, who crossed for the Colombian, was in an onside position. Following the decision being overturned, the Premier League released an official update explaining why it was given.

"#LIVTOT – 16’ VAR OVERTURN VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for Liverpool - and determined that Szoboszlai was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded," the Premier League Match Centre wrote on X.

Alexis Mac Allister then fired in superb second with just 24 minutes on the clock to completely turn the game on its head. Cody Gakpo grabbed a third before half time with Spurs' leaky defence continuing to give away chances.

While the main focus is on Bodo/Glimt, the Lilywhites will be keen to avoid being embarrassed by Liverpool for the third time this season. The first leg of their European semi-final arrives next Thursday with the second leg in the Artic Circle the following week.

Athletic Club and Manchester United are the other teams in the final four following wins over Rangers and Lyon, respectively. While their Premier League campaign is all but over, gaining momentum will be important and conceding three goals in 34 minutes is not exactly the best way to go about that.

Why Rodrigo Bentancur is absent from Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham squad to face Liverpool - Football London
Description

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Rodrigo Bentancur is "fine" despite his absence from the Tottenham matchday squad to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The Uruguayan has been a regular in midfield for Spurs in recent months but he has missed out on the 20-man squad at Anfield.

As was the case with Destiny Udogie in Monday's home defeat against Nottingham Forest, the Spurs boss has elected to give Bentancur a breather from the squad as he believes it will benefit him after playing a lot of football of late. That in turn should put him in a good position to start on Thursday evening against Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game on Bentancur, Postecoglou said: "He's fine, a bit like Destiny last week. He's played a lot recently and we felt like he would benefit from a weekend off, similar to Destiny last week."

In Bentancur's absence, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and James Maddison have come in to form the midfield trio. Fellow midfielder Pape Matar Sarr drops down to the bench after starting against Forest, with Yves Bissouma remaining on there once again.

Elsewhere, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies replace Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at centre-back. Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke are also handed starts as they join Mathys Tel in the front three.

Ange Postecoglou had made a total of eight changes to his Tottenham team for Sunday's Premier League encounter against Liverpool. All eyes will be on the match at Anfield as Arne Slot's side have the opportunity to wrap up the Premier League title.

Tottenham, on the other hand, will be attempting to move up from their lowly position of 16th in the standings after 33 games. The Lilywhites will also have one eye on next Thursday's Europa League semi-final first leg encounter against Bodo/Glimt.

Following Monday's 2-1 home defeat against Nottingham Forest, Postecoglou has switched things about for the game on Merseyside. Kevin Danso and Ben Davies are preferred at centre-back over Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, with Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie the two full-backs and Guglielmo Vicario carrying on in goal.

Archie Gray then gets a start in midfield alongside Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison. In attack, Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke come in to join Mathys Tel in the front three.

Sunday's meeting at Anfield is the fourth time the sides have gone head-to-head during the 2024/25 campaign. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou reflected on the previous games and admitted that this weekend's fixture will be "a great challenge" for his team.

"Yeah, and they've been very settled, so like you said that's the story of our season and you know we've fluctuated between being really good at times with other times not so good," he explained. "I mean they're the only team that's really beaten us comprehensively. I'm not really sure what the figures are, but out of the 18 games or whatever we've lost in the league, I think 15 of them have probably been by a goal, so it's not like.... but Liverpool for sure, they have beat us up a couple of times.

"Like you said in the cup game first leg, I thought we were really good, we took the game to them even though again we had quite a few absences and. worked really hard to get a win in that game, so we know it's going to be tough at the weekend, but at the same time I think it's a great challenge for us."

Here is the Tottenham team Postecoglou has selected to take on the Reds:

Confirmed Tottenham team: Vicario; Spence, Danso, Davies, Udogie; Bergvall, Gray, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Tel.

Tottenham Hotspur could delay Liverpool's inevitable Premier League title victory this afternoon when the two teams meet at Anfield.

Ange Postecoglou's side head to Merseyside in hope, rather than expectation, of a result following a disappointing campaign for the north London club. Spurs sit 16th in the Premier League table and while they cannot be relegated, there will be a desire to pick up points and boost their confidence heading into a crucial Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

As for Liverpool, they know a point will be enough to secure the Premier League title and deny Arsenal the opportunity to catch them. Tottenham fixture change ahead of huge Liverpool title clash with Europa final impact

Tottenham fixture change ahead of huge Liverpool title clash with Europa final impact - Football London
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they are in discussions with the Premier League to change the date of their clash at Aston Villa on Sunday, May 18.

Ange Postecoglou's side will mainly be focused on winning this season's Europa League as they seek silverware for the first time since lifting the League Cup in 2008. Spurs know that victory in Europe's second-tier competition will also seal a place in next season's Champions League.

Tottenham's hopes of achieving anything domestically this term are over with the Lily Whites sitting 16th in the top-flight table and too far off the European qualification spots with five games to go. Postecoglou's men face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon (4:30pm kick-off) but may field an understrength team as they prepare to face Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday.

And it appears that Tottenham are preparing for the possible scenario of reaching the final on Wednesday, May 21, in Bilbao.

"We should like to inform supporters that we are in discussions with the Premier League regarding a change in date to our away Premier League match against Aston Villa, currently scheduled for Sunday 18 May," a statement on the club's website read.

"Further information surrounding this fixture will be announced in due course."

When asked in Friday's pre-match press conference how he balances the season's highs and lows, Postecoglou said: "You just got to try to deal with what is before you. As you said, we are well aware our league form and league position is not good enough. But we also know there is an unbelievable opportunity on the horizon.

"I think irrespective of, this club has had many seasons and a lot of clubs have had seasons where they have done outstandingly well in the league but don’t have the opportunity we have right now of being in the final four of a major European competition. That is where the focus is and where the focus should be irrespective, especially of a club that hasn’t had a lot of success recently.

"We have got a wonderful opportunity. The players have and the club has and collectively if we give ourselves every opportunity to progress to a final then I think hopefully the momentum we gain from that will give us a chance to do something special."

Tottenham predicted team vs Liverpool - Van de Ven starts as Postecoglou makes six changes - Football London
Description

Ange Postecoglou has some big calls to make when it comes to naming his Tottenham team to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Spurs will of course have one eye on next week's Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt but they cannot afford to take their eye off the ball on Merseyside.

Tottenham do not fare well at Anfield, with the Lilywhites conceding four goals in each of their last three games at Liverpool's home. The Reds will be hoping for a similar outcome in the latest meeting between the sides as they have the opportunity to wrap up the 2024/25 Premier League title.

Tottenham, on the other hand, need the points as there is a very real chance they could finish the term one place above the drop zone. As Postecoglou will have the Bodo/Glimt fixture in mind, he will more than likely rotate his team from Monday's defeat to Nottingham Forest and rest a number of his key players.

All eyes will be on whether Micky van de Ven starts after an injury-hit campaign. Fellow centre-back Cristian Romero could quite possibly drop out of the XI, with Pedro Porro, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski others to maybe do likewise.

Liverpool vs Tottenham simulated to get a Premier League score prediction - Football London
Description

Tottenham will be looking to avoid a third Premier League defeat in a row when Ange Postecoglou's side take on Liverpool at Anfield later today.

After picking up a big win against Eintracht Frankfurt to confirm their spot in the Europa League semi-finals, Spurs' poor Premier League form continued as they lost 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest. The result meant Postecoglou's side entered the weekend 16th in the Premier League table, but with all their eggs in the Europa League basket, Spurs may rotate their squad to ensure there are no problems ahead of Thursday's clash with Bodo/Glimt.

This will be the fourth meeting of the season between Spurs and Liverpool, with the Reds winning 6-3 in the Premier League and 4-1 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-final. There are no new injury concerns for the Lilywhites, but Heung-Min Son will be absent once again.

So, can Spurs pick up a win in the Premier League ahead of next week's big Europa League game? Let's take a look.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Premier League score predicted

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Liverpool could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota.

We predict that Spurs could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Vicario; Gray, Danso, Davies, Udogie; Bergvall, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Richarlison.

An open start to the game saw both sides come close in the first 20 minutes, with Luis Diaz curling an effort onto the crossbar before Dominic Solanke did the same at the other end. Richarlison had two big chances fall his way not long after Solanke's shot, but the Brazilian couldn't convert either as Spurs failed to capitalise on a great period of play.

It didn't take long for Liverpool to start controlling the game though, with Guglielmo Vicario being called into action to deny Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson as the chances started to pile up. The Reds continued to push forward, and just before half-time, Slot's side went ahead.

A great challenge from Alexis Mac Allister allowed the midfielder to win back possession and drive forward to kickstart a Liverpool attack. The Argentine found Diaz on the left who threaded a wonderful pass through to Salah, and one-on-one, the winger powered a shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

With the lead, the Reds started to dominate all aspects of the game, with Spurs seeing little of the ball in the final third. The game was settled in the 86th minute when Salah's chipped cross was headed home by Cody Gakpo at the back post, wrapping up the three points as Liverpool won the Premier League.

EA FC 25 predicted final score: Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham
