Description

Tottenham Hotspur have already had a productive January transfer window welcoming Conor Gallagher and Souza to the club, but the club may not be done bolstering their ranks just yet

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a fruitful transfer window this month, with potentially more arrivals to come ahead of Monday's deadline.

Spurs secured Conor Gallagher in a £34million deal with Atletico Madrid, before bolstering their backline with Santos star Souza for a further £13million. However, it now appears as though Thomas Frank is looking for additions in terms of firepower in the business end of the window, with a number of prolific attackers brought up in conversation.

With just a matter of days left in the current window, football.london breaks down all of the latest transfer news, rumours and gossip surrounding Tottenham Hotspur...

Stiff competition for Saudi star

Intermediaries are said to have contacted several Premier League clubs to explore a potential return to the English top flight for Moussa Diaby. The Al-Ittihad winger has thrived in the Saudi Pro League this season, racking up two goals and five assists from 16 appearances thus far.

However, the 26-year-old - who plied his trade with Aston Villa for a year before his move to the Middle East in 2024 - has recently been linked with a return to English soil this month. It is said that Tottenham, Villa, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Sunderland were all contacted by representatives.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan has also been reported as a potential destination for Diaby this month, with claims earlier this month that a loan with a mandatory purchase option had been looked at. Any move for Diaby could be a complex matter, however.

As per TEAMtalk, a potential transfer may prove unworkable due to the tax implications pertaining to a mid-season return to the UK. Players can face a significant tax penalty for returning from Saudi Arabia within a two-year period of arrival.

A product of the Paris Saint-Germain youth academy with a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen on his books, any potential suitors have a valid reason to be excited over the prospect of welcoming Diaby to their ranks this month.

Jean-Philippe Mateta latest

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as potential suitor for Jean-Philippe Mateta this month, as the striker looks for the exit at Selhurst Park. The 28-year-old striker has been linked with a wealth of teams in the current window, including but not limited to Manchester United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Everton, West Ham, Newcastle United and Juventus.

And with the Eagles agreeing a deal in principle with Wolves for Jorgen Strand Larsen this week, it could open the door for Mateta's exit. The Frenchman has scored eight goals from 23 outings this season, and is admired for his physical presence and aerial ability in particular.

With Spurs currently lacking a proven talisman up top, Mateta could be the perfect fit as they look to turn the tide in the Premier League and kick on with their Champions League run.

A deal may not come on the cheap, however, given that Crystal Palace are expected to demand in the region of £35million-£40million to part ways with the striker, who is under contract until next summer.

Raheem Sterling phone call that could spell trouble for Spurs after Chelsea and Arsenal deals

Description

Raheem Sterling is a free agent after leaving Chelsea - and his representatives have held talks with several clubs over a potential move.

Raheem Sterling has previously confessed to harbouring dreams of representing Arsenal, which he eventually did, while it could, potentially, complicate any transfer discussions with Tottenham Hotspur. The winger became a free agent following his departure from Chelsea earlier this week.

It means he is now eligible to join a new club, even beyond the January transfer window. Recent reports suggest that his representatives have already engaged in discussions with as many as seven clubs regarding his next deal.

The Sun reports that Tottenham are among those clubs. Spurs might hold an advantage, due to their geographical location, with Sterling having previously expressed a preference to remain in London.

However, it's now being suggested that the 31 year old is prepared to consider opportunities further away in a bid to revitalise his career. Napoli are among the other clubs reportedly expressing interest.

Sterling began his career in QPR's youth system before heading to Liverpool as a youngster. He has subsequently represented Man City and Chelsea.

Last season, he spent the entirety on loan at Arsenal. Discussing the decision to bring in the England international, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta revealed how a telephone conversation with the player persuaded him and the club to pursue their interest.

"The first call I had with him I knew in the first 10 seconds we had to bring him here because he really wanted it," Arteta said. "That was my only question mark; 'What stage is he at in his career'?

"After 10 seconds I knew already before the next questions that we needed him here.‌ His first words were; 'I was dreaming about this call'. That's it. That tells you he really wants it - and was already thinking about the possibility and he could see himself here, delivering and enjoying his profession.‌

"When that happened, the rest I knew about him, so that blew all the question marks away."

Sterling's 'dream' of representing Arsenal is unlikely to sit well with Tottenham's supporters. The loan arrangement with Spurs' north London rivals saw him feature 28 times across all competitions, netting once and registering five assists.

Two of those outings came in Premier League encounters against Spurs, with his Arsenal debut arriving as a late substitute in Arsenal's victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September 2024.

Cristian Romero has challenged his Tottenham Hotspur teammates to carry their mentality in the UEFA Champions League over to the Premier League

Cristian Romero has shown his true colours following Tottenham Hotspur's win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League. The 27-year-old defender led Thomas Frank's side to victory at the Deutsche Bank Park on Wednesday night, helping the Lilywhites secure automatic qualification to the last 16.

Romero played a pivotal role for Spurs during the 'league phase', starting all but two of the eight games. Only Arsenal conceded fewer goals, and no club recorded more clean sheets than Tottenham.

The Argentina international was just as impactful at the other end of the pitch, scoring one goal and providing three assists. Despite some disappointing results on the domestic stage, Romero led by example in the Champions League, helping the Lilywhites finish in fourth place.

The Spurs skipper was delighted with the result, but he quickly turned his attention to the Premier League after the game. In an interview with Chris Cowlin, Romero showed his true colours, urging his teammates to turn things around in the English top-flight.

Tottenham are currently 14th in the Premier League, and will lock horns with Manchester City at home on Sunday afternoon. The Argentine said: "Yeah, it's a fantastic feeling.

"We needed this performance. We needed this amazing win away from home. The most important thing now is to recover well, and we will go again.

"Every time it's like this. In the Champions League, it's top at the moment, but in the Premier League, we need more. We need to stay together, and we'll be okay."

Romero continued: "I spoke with the players before the game, in the Champions League it's always like this. The most important thing is to play with this mentality.

"For me, the most important thing now is we go again in the Premier League. It's not good enough at the moment, and we will go again, stay all together. It's a difficult time, but it's like this now."

On Randal Kolo Muani, who fired Tottenham ahead against Eintracht Frankfurt shortly after the break, Romero said: "It's fantastic for him. We need confidence for the striker. I'm very happy for him."

Frank has recently been juggling a number of injuries to key players. On the setbacks that Tottenham have faced, Romero said: "It's a bad moment, a lot of injuries, but I'm very happy for the players today (and) also the young players.

"The most important thing, we stay all together. It is never easy. The life is like this. This is football. We need to stay strong, especially in this moment. It is a difficult moment in the Premier League.

"In the Champions League, it is like another league for us. It's like perfect, but yeah, now recover well. In four days, we have another big game, and we need to stay with this mentality."

And finally, on the three thousand Tottenham fans that travelled to Germany, Romero said: "Fantastic. Fantastic every time. It is the same. You know I love these fans.

"Every time (they're) with us. It is the most important thing for us, especially in this moment in the Premier League. It is like no good moment, but yeah, thank you for staying all with us. Amazing."

Joao Palhinha laughs after being asked question about Tottenham's Champions League hopes

Description

The Tottenham midfielder has been speaking about the Champions League last 16 qualification and his under-pressure manager

Joao Palhinha believes Tottenham must show "a new face" if they are to take the momentum of their Champions League run into the Premier League and relieve the pressure on Thomas Frank.

Spurs secured their spot in the last 16 of Europe's top tier competition with their 2-0 win in Frankfurt on Wednesday. That meant they finished fourth in the big Champions League table, above the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, last year's winners PSG, Juventus, Inter Milan and fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle.

That also secured a huge cash windfall of roughly £43million and now Tottenham will take on one of Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge or Galatasaray in the round of 16 in March.

Yet that European progress comes at the same time as Frank faces major pressure over his future at the club with Spurs 14th in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions. On Sunday, the north London outfit welcome Manchester City to kick off a run of games against Pep Guardiola's side, Manchester United, Newcastle and their local rivals Arsenal.

Spurs beat City 2-0 under Frank at the Etihad Stadium back in August and one of the goalscorers that day, midfielder Palhinha, believes it's time for the club to show a new side.

"That's the Tottenham we all wish [for], to beat top teams," he said. "We need to take this victory and this important qualification to give a big jump in everything that has passed in the last couple of months and start a new face, hopefully."

The Portugal international believes the players must take responsibility for the stark contrast between Tottenham's continental and domestic form.

"It's a lot of things. Of course the injuries don’t help the team but the responsibility is mainly with the players, in my opinion, because we should do much better in some key moments," said the 30-year-old.

"We conceded some goals we shouldn’t concede in important games. Since Brentford, we lost some important points that for me would have put us in a different position in the table right now. But it’s football. The main thing is to try to, with this game and this qualification, make something different from right now.

“Don’t think don’t too much on the past but look more for the future and what we want to do. We have top players, top staff as well. We all want to change the momentum in the Premier League."

Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, admits things have been tough on Frank and that life is not easy on managers.

"We are with all our hands together. The responsibility is not with the coach, although of course the coach will receive all the responsibility because of results. We know how it is in football," he said.

“Sometimes it’s not easy to be a coach, but the responsibility is also from the players and some things need to improve. The main thing is we recognise where we need to be better and as a top club, this pressure would come and we knew that."

When asked whether Spurs could go all the way and win the Champions League, the experienced midfielder was far too wily and laughed before saying: "It’s not about winning the Champions League. I think in life it needs to be with steps. I know what you want to hear from me!

"But the main thing is we did our qualification responsibly with a lot of respect and we deserve to complete this qualification. Now let’s see who we find in the next round. The focus right now will be on the Premier League and then after we will have a look again to the Champions League."

Palhinha was asked whether there is a psychological barrier for the Tottenham players in the Premier League after two seasons of toil in the competition.

"We had some games that we won, especially in the first weeks against City. We had some really good games, but I think we miss sometimes the details. If we have a look, some losses that we had I think were about the details," he said.

"The team always gives everything we have. It’s really important on that face, I know that for supporters it’s not easy to digest the position in the table. I know it’s frustrating for them but also for us. We need to keep the hands all together and try to change the momentum on Sunday against City."

So will Tottenham's ability on the break and requirement to raise themselves and focus for big games help in this coming quartet of tough fixtures?

"Let’s see. I think we will have this answer in the next few games!" said Palhinha. "Of course the motivation is always high when you play these kind of games.

“But we know the reality of where we are in the table and we definitely need to change this because it’s not the image from Tottenham, definitely. It’s not the position in the table that everyone wants to be. We will try to do everything we can to change it."

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson sent a message on Instagram after the Reds' 6-0 Champions League win over Qarabag, as Tottenham transfer discussions have ended.

Andy Robertson declared Anfield his home following Liverpool's commanding 6-0 triumph over Qarabag that sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Robertson was handed a start ahead of Milos Kerkez with just five days remaining until Monday's winter transfer deadline, despite attracting attention from Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds and Spurs engaged in initial discussions regarding a potential deal, though those talks have since been abandoned.

Roma's unwillingness to permit Liverpool to recall Kostas Tsimikas as Robertson's replacement ultimately scuppered any prospect of the transfer materialising. With the club unlikely to find another replacement, it seems as though the Scottish international won't be making the move to N17 this winter.

One key factor has surrounded the injury issues that Liverpool face, with Arne Slot making a defiant statement in the wake of those Robertson links. He claimed he needed all of his players available, sending a potential message to the hierarchy over the future of the defender.

FOLLOW OUR TOTTENHAM FB PAGE!Latest Spurs news, analysis and much more via our dedicated Facebook page

Now, after Robertson returned to the starting lineup for Liverpool in midweek for the Champions League, the left-back may have dropped a hint on his own future. "Home," he wrote on Instagram during the early hours of Thursday morning in an Instagram post, accompanied by a red heart emoji.

One of the two images featured shows Robertson offering a thumbs-up with his left hand while placing his right hand over his heart following the final whistle. The second captures him clutching a ball under his arm as he strolls towards one of the corner flags.

"Top 8 secured," the caption concluded, finished with a tick emoji. Robertson also shared it on his Instagram story later that morning.

Reds boss Slot indicated before the fixture against Qarabag that he anticipates Robertson remaining at the club. The head coach stated: "Robbo is part of the team tomorrow evening.

"He has been part of this squad for so many years. I am happy to have him, and I am glad he is available because that is not normal for us right now. He will be part of the team, and nothing is happening on this side. It's hard to say anything definite in this world we are in, but I expect him to stay."

Robertson ultimately helped Liverpool earn a place in the top eight of the Champions League with their thrashing of Qarabag, giving them a passage straight to the round of 16. Fortunately, Tottenham did too, giving them a few free midweeks in the coming month.

The deal itself comes as a potential blow for Tottenham, however, who were looking to bring forward their summer business, where Robertson was expected to be a target as a free agent at the end of his contract at Liverpool. The 31-year-old brings experience, leadership and a winning mentality with him from his time with the Merseyside outfit.

The move in January could've helped to replace the influence of Ben Davies, who is now set for a long spell out of the team with injury. When it comes to Spurs' full-back options, there are a few who can fill the gap, with Destiny Udogie returning from several injury spells to take the position again, while new signing Souza is a backup alongside Djed Spence, who can switch from the left to the right.

But all of them lack that experience that would come from someone like Davies or Robertson, especially at a time when Tottenham need the senior players to uphold high standards. It's unclear whether Spurs will enter the market to reinforce the team with other options, having already signed Conor Gallagher and Souza this month.

If they are to do so, then only a few days remain to get those final deals over the line to help support Frank with turning the team's form around.

Ering Haaland is a big fan of one Tottenham transfer target

Omar Marmoush has emerged as a reported target for Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window. The Manchester City striker has been linked with a move to Spurs but the club only have a few days left to finalise a potential deal as deadline day looms.

The 26-year-old was signed by Pep Guardiola for £59million last January following a prolific spell at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 37 goals in 67 games. Filling the void that Julian Alvarez had left in the City squad a few months earlier, Marmoush had an immediate impact upon his arrival.

The Egypt international ended last season with seven goals in 16 league games and appeared primed for a starring role this campaign. However, he had to wait until last weekend against Wolves for his first league goal. It was just Marmoush's third league start after overcoming a knee injury and also representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.

City’s recent signing of Antoine Semenyo has further fuelled speculation that Marmoush could leave, with Spurs among several clubs linked with a £26million move. Despite his slow start to the season, Marmoush has been lauded by the likes of Haaland and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner during his career.

Erling Haaland’s ‘special’ verdict

A few days after his move to City was completed, Marmoush started in a 3-1 win over Chelsea. Although he did not score, Erling Haaland was instantly impressed with his new teammate.

"I think especially in the first half you can see he has something special,” Haaland said after Marmoush’s debut. “There’s a reason City brought him because he has something special.

“He got straight into the team and It’s about getting to know him as soon as possible because there are so many important games coming. It’s about giving him confidence and he’s going to be a fantastic player for us.”

Haaland added: “He had an amazing first half of the season for Eintracht Frankfurt and hopefully, he’s going to have the same season with us now for the second half of the season.”

Loved by Oliver Glasner

Marmoush first crossed paths with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner as a young striker at Wolfsburg. He made his debut in 2020, featuring 10 times under the manager, before being loaned out to St Pauli and Stuttgart.

While his game was still developing, Glasner was quickly convinced of the forward’s potential. Despite their short time working together at Wolfsburg, the pair remained in contact and Glasner spoke highly of Marmoush's character and footballing talent last year.

“He has all the abilities to become one of the top strikers in the world,” Glasner said ahead of facing his former player. “We could see from day one, when he trained with us, because he has the skills.

“What I also loved was, at that time, he was in Germany for two and a half years and he spoke German perfectly. This is quite unusual. You could see he's a great guy, he has all the skills.

“It's in the football career, sometimes it’s not a straight direction to the top. I think he was on loan at FC St Pauli, in VfB Stuttgart, performing for Wolfsburg and then the outstanding season for Frankfurt. Immediately he showed at Manchester City the kind of striker he is, so I'm really pleased for him, but not tomorrow!”

The FA have issued an update on punishments for Tottenham and Aston Villa following the brawl at the end of their FA Cup tie

Tottenham and Aston Villa have been fined £125,000 by the FA for the mass confrontation at the conclusion of their FA Cup third round clash. Goals from Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia sealed Villa's spot in the next round, but it was a tense conclusion after Wilson Odobert pulled one back.

Tensions then boiled over at the full-time whistle, with the incident involving players from both teams sparked after Joao Palhinha was unhappy with Ollie Watkins celebrating his side's victory right in front of him. Villa and Spurs have now discovered their punishments for

A statement from the FA read: "An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Aston Villa FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC for the mass confrontation that occurred at their FA Cup match on Saturday 10 January.

"It was alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or officials did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way after the final whistle.

"Tottenham Hotspur FC and Aston Villa FC subsequently admitted the charge against them. The Regulatory Commission imposed a £125,000 fine on both clubs, and their written reasons for these decisions can be seen below."

Those written reasons included an explanation as to why the two teams were changed and the FA rules that had been broken.

Thomas Frank spoke about the incident in the aftermath and appeared to blame Villa striker Ollie Watkins for his part in the flashpoint after he celebrated the win right in front of Joao Palhinha.

When asked if his side have a discipline issue, he said: "I don’t think so. I guess you have seen the situation through? "I just saw it to be sure I saw what I saw. Of course, it is all about keeping a cool head.

"The players gave everything out there, losing a tight game, the season is not going perfect and I think Ollie is very provoking in the way he's going down to celebrate in front of the Villa fans.

"He is just walking into João and he could just easily walk around. Everyone who has a been of a competitive nature, it is difficult, that can trigger things."

Unai Emery on the other hand claimed Villa were not happy with Palhinha's challenge on Boubacar Kamara, which led to him being substituted because of an injury in the opening stages.

He said: "It is the referee's work. I respect the referees and the competition. We were only angry because Boubacar Kamara was getting injured in in one action with Palhinha.

"The referee today, he did a fantastic job. Some moments happen with some players, we can understand in the circumstances."

Tottenham transfer need after confusion, huge cash windfall and Thomas Frank's future hope - Football London
Description

Here are our Tottenham talking points after their 2-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League

Only Tottenham Hotspur could cause people to look at the Champions League table and then rub their eyes.

For the lowly 14th-placed side in the Premier League managed to finish in fourth in Europe above the likes of - brace yourselves - Barcelona, Real Madrid, last year's winners PSG, Juventus, Inter Milan and not to mention Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle among 32 other teams.

You could throw in a couple of former Tottenham managers' sides as well if you want in Jose Mourinho's Benfica and Antonio Conte's Napoli, although the former sneaked into the play-offs with a remarkable conclusion to their victory over Real Madrid.

Spurs do not require the play-offs. Thomas Frank's side go straight through to the last 16 of the Champions League with a record of five wins, two draws and one defeat in Paris against the reigning holders, which was actually their best away performance until Wednesday evening in the snow of Frankfurt.

Tottenham also recorded six clean sheets from the eight games as they racked up 17 points. Guglielmo Vicario, who did not have a single save to make on Wednesday night, kept out more teams than any other goalkeeper in the long league phase.

Some will point to a kinder draw for Spurs and that four of their opponents did not eventually make it through to the knockout stages. There were also some lucky escapes in Bodo and Monaco, but cup football is about beating what is in front of you.

For some reason, the north London club just seem to deal with the pressure of European football that little bit better than they do the Premier League.

That experience was only strengthened by the run to last year's triumph in Bilbao and the feeling of silverware again after almost two decades and even though a repeat in Budapest seems the most unlikely of scenarios, that won't stop people, including those 3,000 Spurs fans who braved the cold in Germany, from dreaming.

The last 16 will pit Tottenham against one of four sides - Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge or Galatasaray.

After finishing fourth in the league phase, Spurs will benefit from a new rule this season which ensures they will play the second leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the last 16 and also the quarter-finals should they progress.

Then there is the huge prize money in this lucrative competition. Just to begin with all 36 teams in the league stage get a basic payment of £16.18million, whilst Tottenham, in finishing in the top eight, get an additional £9.56million.

There is also the £1.82million for every league phase victory with the north London outfit bringing in £9.1million by beating Villarreal, Copenhagen, Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.

A draw brings in £606,000 so Spurs secured over £1.2million from their games against Monaco and Bodo/Glimt.

Teams also collect £239,000 per league position, meaning Tottenham's fourth-place finish hands them another £7.8million, which drives their total prize money from the Champions League up to just under £43million.

That's not taking into account the big gate receipts from the home game or the other food, drink and merchandise sales that come from those encounters.

The prize money continues to rise as the tournament goes on, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, runners-up and winners all getting £10.7million, £12.9million, £15.9million and £21.5million respectively.

So in short Spurs have made a lot of money from both getting into the competition through Ange Postecoglou taking them to the Europa League triumph and subsequent Champions League qualification and then Frank steering them into the last 16.

The Dane now finds himself in a remarkably similar situation to his predecessor. Postecoglou's run to the Carabao Cup semi-finals aside, the Premier League position is roughly the same and the FA Cup has been exited. Europe is the only avenue of real excitement ahead.

Frank will no doubt point to the patience that Postecoglou received because of his European exploits. Those adventures appeared to keep the Greek-born Australian in his job long enough to capture the trophy in Spain.

Should Frank also be given the same leeway for the European excellence and the vast sums of money brought into the club in doing so? Some will say he has paid for further time, those more cynical might suggest he has handed Spurs the money required for his compensation if he was to be sacked.

The head coach may also point to the fact that Tottenham have lost only three of their past nine matches. Others will point to the level of the opposition in those games and that many of the draws and defeats should have been victories.

Tottenham are definitely finding more joy with a back three and they are creating far more chances than they were before in those days of XG woe. Again the standard of the opposition should be taken into account but Frank will note the increased numbers around the team.

Archie Gray, who was excellent in the falling snow in Frankfurt, said that the players are getting to grips with the 3-4-3 formation, which often sits like a 3-4-2-1.

"Definitely. It's something new to us and we're enjoying it at the moment," said the 19-year-old. "It's just learning the patterns and where the free players are and things like that, but it's really enjoyable at the moment and hopefully we can just carry that into the Premier League."

Frankfurt came into this encounter in a mess. They had conceded three goals in each of their previous five matches, had key attacking injuries, had not won a game yet in 2026 and were without a permanent manager with Dennis Schmitt placed in interim charge of the team.

Yet the atmosphere inside the Deutsche Bank Park was still as noisy and intimidating as ever and Spurs themselves were without 14 unavailable players, meaning Frank only had 11 senior outfield ones to choose from.

Gray admitted that in the opening stages of the game, the north London side were "a little bit confused" at first over whether Frankfurt would press or not.

"It was a little bit of both and when we got further up the pitch they sat off a bit. It was difficult to break them down but we knew over time not every team can stay like that and we eventually got the goal," he said.

The man who received the loudest noise of the night, but not in a good way, was Randal Kolo Muani, who had a whirlwind 36 hours or so.

He missed the initial flight to Germany after a crash involving his Ferrari on the M25 as he drove from Hotspur Way to Stansted Airport. Photos of the smashed right side of the sportscar only show how fortunate the Frenchman was to escape injury.

The 27-year-old managed to jump on a later flight with Wilson Odobert, who had stopped behind him on the motorway to check on his team-mate.

Frank made it clear that the on-loan PSG man was in the right frame of mind to play and he certainly did, with one of his best performances in a Spurs shirt, all the while being booed with every touch by the Frankfurt fans who loved him during his goal-laden time in Germany.

His movement and hold-up play were on point and he looked entirely comfortable back in a stadium he knows well.

Spurs thought they had opened the scoring within three minutes when Kolo Muani wriggled into the box and Xavi Simons slammed home his low parried cross. However, Destiny Udogie was offside in the build-up and deemed to be interfering with play as he blocked a defender.

After a string of chances in the first half, Spurs finally scored two minutes into the second period when Xavi's deep cross was headed into the six-yard box by the unmarked Cristian Romero and Kolo Muani flicked the ball into the net with his heel.

After being booed mercilessly by the Frankfurt fans, he celebrated his goal with a big smile as his team-mates looked delighted for him and he was pushed in front of the travelling Tottenham faithful to the right of the goal.

"He's an amazing player. He works so hard in training every day and he deserves this goal," said Gray. "An amazing player and an amazing guy. He deserves it."

It also continues Kolo Muani's strange trend of only scoring against his former clubs so far in his loan spell and Spurs might just hope to draw Juventus in the last 16 with that in mind, if the Frenchman is still in N17 and not employed in Turin.

Frank admitted to football.london that he had joked with Kolo Muani about his strange selective scoring habit during this loan spell.

"First of all, I was very happy that he scored the goal. He looked like a threat. He almost got an assist with the first one that was disallowed. He was very involved in that. Great action. I think he had great actions throughout the game," he said.

"So I'm very happy that he got the goal and I said to him 'please start scoring against others than your former clubs, that would be nice'! But we know when you come to a new club, a new country, it's never straightforward and never in the Premier League. I hope this will give him some confidence."

Kolo Muani was replaced later in the game by Dominic Solanke who after further Spurs chances to score were spurned, rubber stamped Frank's decision to bring him back into the Champions League squad for Mathys Tel by making it goals in consecutive matches.

The England striker sealed the win in the 77th minute with anticipation, acceleration and a low assured finish after running on to Mahmoud Dahoud's poor header back.

"I'm so happy not only to have him in the Champions League squad, but also it was a tough decision," Frank told football.london. "It was a big game tonight and I wanted to start Dom, but we need to take clever decisions like we've done throughout, because we have been pushing him to the limit.

"So we know every sign, every experience says that it was the right thing not to start him. So I'm happy that it turned out to be a very good decision."

There were other positives for Frank with Joao Palhinha back and doing well on the right of a back three alongside the battling Kevin Danso, who picked up a knock in the first half and gamely limped on, and Romero, who picked up the Champions League player of the match award on his 150th appearance for the club.

Both full-backs covered plenty of ground without too much end product, while Wilson Odobert looks to be gaining confidence with every match and believes again that he can dribble past anyone.

Pape Matar Sarr managed a full energetic 90 minutes in a rare start in the past month after his time winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and subsequent illness.

There is also a growing relationship between Gray and Xavi in the centre of the pitch with the 19-year-old and 22-year-old starting to understand each other's games.

"He's a joy. Xavi's a joy," said Gray. "We say to each other, I mean me and him - I trust everyone, but when I give the ball to him I know he's going to trust me back just as much. We try to get this little link-up with one touch and two touch passes, one-twos and all that.

"He's a pleasure to play with, getting in those spaces, it's so difficult to pick up for centre-backs and to track it's horrible. He was unbelievable tonight."

Spurs' creativity has leapt up thanks to Xavi's regular starts. He's still raw and very inconsistent with his passing but there's familiar elements in his play that touch on the strengths of other Tottenham playmakers over the years with the dribbling of Maddison and the quick thinking of Eriksen.

When he finds his consistency in the tighter spaces in the Premier League then he can become a force to be reckoned with.

Spurs will only get a night to reflect on their Champions League achievement and the gap it will now give both them and Arsenal around the next north London derby after missing out on the play-off round.

"It's a dream," said Gray. "I was just saying to Dom, finishing in the top four in the Champions League, we'll never take that for granted. You see the teams that are in the Champions League and it's the best of the best and that's where we want to be, so it's a pleasure."

Frank was proud of his players for putting themselves through it all again when so short on numbers.

"Very happy with the performance. I think the players showed great character, their mentality. We basically had 12 available players for Dortmund and in this game and in both games the players stepped up," he said.

"This game we were more or less in control from the beginning to the end of the game. That's a big thing. I need to say, we've seen some of the results in the Champions League tonight. We've seen some of the results throughout the league phase. There's no easy games. So we're sitting here with 17 points, ending, finishing fourth in the group stage, sixth clean sheet.

"It's very impressive, but throughout the game we were good in the high pressure. We looked strong when we defended low. I'm very happy how we progressed with the ball and how we got quick up the pitch. And then, of course, still working on creating, but we created quite a lot today, which I'm very pleased with.

"And then, of course, the fans were fantastic. Very happy, so many of them travelling in numbers and the support throughout the game."

It is also Frank's first ever Champions League campaign as a manager and he has guided his team into the last 16 and above the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG at a time when his future is the subject of plenty of speculation.

"Yeah, of course I'm happy, but it's not about me. I think I'm very happy that the staff, the players, everyone, how we prepared the team for these games in general, it's very positive," he said.

"We need to look forward to the round of 16, which is hugely important that you are qualified for everything, but also gives us some time between games to train. And I also think the 3-4-3 also looked good in the last three games."

Depending on fit players, Frank will likely bring the formation into Sunday's Premier League clash against Manchester City, a match that will raise the same problem that began the crumbling of Postecoglou's relationship with sections of the Spurs fanbase. When is losing a good thing?

For once again Tottenham go into this game knowing that if they beat Pep Guardiola's side then it hands a big advantage in the title race to their most hated rivals Arsenal, who Spurs will play a couple of weeks after.

Postecoglou could not understand the idea of wanting to lose a football match and he told football.london back then that his experience on the touchline in that game was his worst in 25 years as a manager as he feared being accused of throwing the result.

This match comes earlier in the season than that one and at a similar time to when Spurs beat City under Conte with a Harry Kane goal, a match which had little fuss around it of such a nature despite Arsenal being top at that time.

However, this game has already got a similar noise to the Postecoglou one around it, with 15,000 fans on X liking one post claiming it is a must-lose match.

Just as he bought himself some relief with the fans, so Frank will head into Friday's press conference at Hotspur Way having to manage what he says carefully.

No manager in their right mind would ever want to lose a match or speak about doing so, particularly when in a perilous position in the league with only one win in eight in the Premier League, but Frank will also be wary of a section of Spurs fans being more concerned about their rivals' fate on this occasion than their own.

It's a no-win situation for a manager who has already lost much of the fanbase and will likely be criticised for whatever he says.

Sunday brings more planned protests as well with Change for Tottenham aiming to get the fans meeting outside the south stand before the game and chanting throughout with the message for supporters not to spend inside the stadium and walking out on 75 minutes.

It comes following a moment in the aftermath of the final whistle at Frankfurt when the travelling fans and the players and Frank were one again, both applauding each others' efforts. How that relationship looks on Sunday in front of the home crowd will soon become clear.

The club can do their part to boost both Frank, the club and the supporters with some transfer activity in the days ahead.

Frank has admitted he needs help, even if any help must be long-term as well as short-term, and right now Tottenham have only balanced the books in the transfer market. It's not a look that screams ambition, even amidst the difficulties of the January transfer market.

Spurs have backing from the Lewis family to make something happen but also now the transfer cash boost of the Champions League money.

They also have the selling point, however brief it may be, of showing prospective targets that Champions League table and those last 16 games to be played in March and hopefully beyond.

There is still a chance to make a statement in the coming days and Spurs need ready-made attacking help if they are to turn chances into goals and succeed in the weeks and months ahead. It's speculating to accumulate and push the club away from the drop zone.

On a snowy night in Frankfurt, Tottenham Hotspur warmed their fans once again but they now need to show the ambition that states they deserve to remain among Europe's best both on and off the pitch.

Dejan Kulusevski has been unavailable for the last eight months due to a knee injury with the Tottenham attacker issuing a clear message on social media

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski has shared a three-word update as his lengthy injury absence continues. The Sweden international has been absent since May 2025 after picking up a knee problem which required surgery.

That issue ruled him out of Spurs' Europa League triumph and he has now missed a total of 38 competitive games with no clear indication of when he could return. Despite missing the majority of the current season, Kulusevski is remaining positive and has now shared a clear message to Instagram.

Alongside his daughter, who is wearing a Spurs shirt, Kulusevski is all smiles in what looks to be a gym with the caption: "No matter what [sun emoji]." International team-mate Viktor Gyokeres has liked the post along with Spurs stars Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence.

The initial expectation was that Kulusevski would be able to feature at some point in late 2025 but that did not materialise. At the start of the year, Thomas Frank delivered an update on his condition where the Spurs boss explained what the plan was for the coming weeks.

He said: “We know it's a complicated injury. If there's one person who can accelerate that, it's Dejan. He's a top pro and has got a top mentality.

"The most important thing is to remove the pain in the knee. He got an injection to help that 10 days ago. We know in three to four weeks if it's settled and when it's settled, hopefully, he’ll be on the grass and from there, we’ll see what’s happening.

"It was not going forward as quickly as we thought but it's an injury we haven’t seen that much in football history. It's a complicated injury, where it’s important to make sure there’s no pain in the knee. That’s why he got an injection and it hopefully will help. So in three to four weeks’ time, he’ll be on the grass pain-free."

Ahead of the Champions League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt, Frank was asked for an update but stated that he did not have one.

The Spurs boss has been forced to contend with several big injury blows this season. Pedro Porro and Lucas Bergvall are the latest to suffer issues, joining Rodrigo Bentancur and Richarlison as players unavailable.

Mohammed Kudus and Ben Davies are other absentees with the latter unlikely to feature for the remainder of the season and thus again for Spurs as his contract expires this summer. James Maddison is pushing to return from ACL surgery before the end of May after suffering his long-term issue in pre-season.

Dominic Solanke had also suffered an injury before the current campaign commenced but he has returned recently and scored in Wednesday night's win over Frankfurt.

Micky van de Ven missed that European clash, and though Frank admitted it was only a minor issue, there was concern given his previous injury problems.

He said on Tuesday: "It’s just a minor thing. It’s not a hamstring. We expect him to be a big possibility for City."

Tottenham have earned over £42.6m in Champions League prize money after beating Eintracht Frankfurt to reach the last 16 of the competition, having finished

Tottenham concluded their Champions League league phase campaign with a commanding triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday evening to secure their spot in the last-16. Second-half strikes from Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke ensured under-pressure Thomas Frank's side sidestepped a two-legged play-off encounter.

Spurs join four other Premier League clubs in finishing amongst the competition's top eight, alongside Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Sporting Clube de Portugal complete the confirmed last-16 lineup.

This campaign sees £2.14billion available in the Champions League - with the substantial sums on offer providing a significant financial uplift for Tottenham compared to their Europa League earnings.

All 36 participants collect a basic payment of £16.18million, whilst sides finishing in the top eight and advancing to the last-16 pocket an additional £9.56m.

League phase victories also deliver £1.82m apiece, with Spurs banking £9.1m from defeating Villarreal, Copenhagen, Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Draws yield £606,000 each, meaning Spurs collected over £1.2m from stalemates against Monaco and Bodo/Glimt.

Teams additionally earn £239,000 per league position. Kazakhstani minnows Kairat will claim that amount having finished rock bottom.

Tottenham's fourth-place finish delivers £7.8m on top of their other rewards, bringing their total prize money from the tournament so far to just over £43m.

The prize money escalates as the tournament progresses, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, runners-up and winners receiving £10.7m, £12.9m, £15.9m and £21.5m respectively.

To date, Spurs have accumulated £42.6m from their Champions League campaign alone.

The disparity in prize money compared to the Europa League is substantial.

When they clinched the competition in May under former boss Ange Postecoglou, Spurs received £5m after defeating Manchester United.

In total, winning the competition generated £69.7m through participation fees, prize money and the value pillar that distributes funds based on league market size and coefficients.
