Manchester United are now eyeing a double deal to raid Tottenham Hotspur for both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero this summer.

Man Utd planning defensive signings

Despite Harry Maguire putting pen to paper on a new contract, which extends his stay at Old Trafford to the end of next season, Man United are looking to rebuild their defence in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have received the green light to sign Romero, with Tottenham now prepared to cash-in on their captain, who has already suggested he is open to leaving, having found himself in a relegation battle this season.

Less than a year on from winning the Europa League, it is looking like Romero and Van de Ven could be on the move, with the Netherlands international also looking to leave, having delayed talks about a new contract.

According to a report from The Athletic, Man United are now plotting a move for the Dutchman, with a departure 'potentially on the cards' regardless of what division Spurs find themselves in next season.

United's interest in signing a new defender stems from Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez struggling injury-wise at times this season, and they want to bring in an 'imposing, left-footed' centre-back.

The news hasn't gone down particularly well with Mark Goldbridge, who took to X to slam the recruitment team.

However, the £90k-a-week defender has caught the eye at times in a Spurs shirt, with journalist Suleyman Ozturk saying during the 2023-24 season: "He was also impressive against Manchester City a week and a half ago and now this match against Everton. It is unbelievable what kind of development he is going through now; he is a Superman in a Rolls-Royce."

Signing Van de Ven perhaps makes more sense than Romero, given that he is left-footed, whereas Romero favours his right, but the Argentinian has outperformed his centre-back partner in a number of key areas this season.

Cristian Romero stats

The 27-year-old was recently ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury, which is a blow for Tottenham, given that he has been one of their better players in a poor campaign, averaging a 7.06 FotMob match rating, the highest in the squad.

Cristian Romero's Premier League statistics

Micky van de Ven stats

Van de Ven has also been a key player for Spurs, playing the most minutes of any outfield player, but Romero has gotten the better of him across a number of key defensive metrics.

Worse than Gallagher: De Zerbi must finally sell Spurs' new Tanguy Ndombele

Description

Giovani Lo Celso, Gedson Fernandes, and Tanguy Ndombele - just a few of the many midfield signings made in the post-Mousa Dembele era at Tottenham Hotspur who have failed to deliver as expected.

Conor Gallagher, signed from Atletico Madrid on a £34m deal back in January, looks like the latest potentially flawed addition at N17, even after putting in arguably his brightest display to date against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The England international was a relentless, box-to-box presence in that dramatic 2-2 draw, albeit while still lacking that real quality in possession, with his 11 Premier League games at Spurs to date yielding just a solitary assist and just a solitary 'big chance' created.

His work ethic and all-action style is to his credit, but that little sprinkling of extra is still missing, with the 26-year-old in danger of heading the same way as those midfield reinforcements who have come before him.

Remembering Tottenham's worst midfield signings since 2019

That year also saw the aforementioned Dembele depart in the January, with Daniel Levy and co later signing Ndombele on a then-club record £62.8m deal in the summer, the first truly eye-watering sum dished out during Pochettino's tenure.

The Argentine was gone so soon into the former Lyon man's time in north London, however, with Ndombele never showing enough to warrant such a price tag, eventually departing in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer.

Fellow 2019, arrival, Lo Celso, also endured a difficult spell of his own after racking up just 18 goals and assists in 108 games for the club, while Gedson Fernandes' loan move ended after just 14 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Since then, there's been the mixed spell for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as well as the recent loan capture of Joao Palhinha, the latter of whom appears unsuited to Roberto De Zerbi's new progressive approach.

That said, it is another member of De Zerbi's current ranks who can perhaps be considered the worst midfield signing since Ndombele.

Spurs need to finally sell the new Ndombele this summer

Eyebrows were raised at the selection of De Zerbi's midfield unit on Saturday, with Gallagher the only member of the trio to keep his place, as the young pairing of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall dropped to the bench.

The return of Rodrigo Bentancur, it must be said, was a welcome one, with the Uruguayan's recent absence coinciding with the club's slump in 2026.

The same can't be said of the returning Yves Bissouma, however, with it fair to say that the Malian's race is run in a Spurs shirt, ahead of his likely free transfer exit this summer.

Indeed, it would be a surprise to see the former Seagulls star offered a new deal at N17, with the £25m signing enduring a difficult few years at the club, both on and off the field.

This season, in particular, the 29-year-old has been a peripheral figure under a succession of managers, with Saturday's start having been only his ninth outing in all competitions.

Coincidence or not, Spurs are yet to win any game that Bissouma has played in so far in 2025/26, losing six of those nine league games this calendar year.

The latest of those appearances against his former club saw the once-promising midfielder hooked on 57 minutes by De Zerbi, having registered only 29 touches and picked up an early yellow card amid that difficult return to action.

In all, he failed to win a single duel or complete a single tackle, having made no key passes, no successful dribbles and only one progressive carry all game.

Hampered by injury and disciplinary issues throughout his time at the club, Bissouma - like Ndombele before him - has been a problem for a string of managers now at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A "ridiculous player at times" in the view of James Maddison - again, like Ndombele - that quality just hasn't been seen enough, ensuring he should be part of a real squad overhaul under De Zerbi this summer.

Regardless of whether or not Spurs beat the drop, the club hierarchy should be happy to let Bissouma walk away for nothing, just as they were for Ndombele two years ago.

Description

For the first time in a long while, there looks to be a semblance of a plan emerging at Tottenham Hotspur, with Roberto De Zerbi's side putting in a much-improved performance in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.

There was an energy and freshness to that weekend display, a far cry from what has been seen of late, with the reintroduction of Xavi Simons providing that much-needed spark off the left.

Off the right, however, the anonymous outing from Randal Kolo Muani highlighted that there is still plenty of work to be done for De Zerbi to truly steady this sinking ship, the Frenchman registering just 19 touches in that lifeless 57-minute outing.

Still stuck on just a solitary league goal for the season, the on-loan striker has been a dismal signing, it must be said, with the new Spurs boss needing to find an alternate solution in the forward line next time around.

Why the right wing could be now Spurs' biggest issue

After so much chopping and changing under Igor Tudor, there is more of a settled feel under De Zerbi, with the backline almost picking itself at present, even if Kevin Danso did endure a late lapse in concentration at the weekend.

In midfield, there are now a plethora of options amid the return of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Simons' impactful display on the left showcased why that could be the Dutchman's permanent home moving forward.

More is expected of starting number nine, Dominic Solanke, after netting only 12 league goals since the start of last season, although it is the right-wing berth that will have De Zerbi scratching his head.

It's been a luckless campaign with regard to injury at N17, none more so on the flanks, with Dejan Kulusevski having not featured since May, Mohammed Kudus enduring a setback in his recovery and Wilson Odobert now a long-term absentee following his ACL blow.

Having also sold last season's top scorer, Brennan Johnson, back in January, there is no clear or standout candidate for that right flank, with much of Spurs' best work on Saturday coming down Simons' left.

Kolo Muani - who is set to return to Paris Saint-Germain this summer - registered just a solitary shot and failed to complete a single key pass or cross before his swift withdrawal, again highlighting why a permanent stay will not be a consideration at the end of the season.

Experimenting with the centre-forward in this wide role just isn't working right now, ensuring De Zerbi needs to make a change.

Spurs' answer to Mbappe could now replace Kolo Muani

The final days of Tudor saw the Croatian take on an experiment of his own after deploying both Pedro Porro and Djed Spence down that right flank, albeit with neither man surely the answer in what is a more attack-minded, high-press approach under De Zerbi.

Seeking alternatives to Kolo Muani from the start then, the ex-Marseille boss might instead look to the man who replaced him at the weekend, in the form of £30m man Mathys Tel, with the Frenchman having come off the bench in each of the last two games.

That had come after something of an injury issue during the international break, although now fit and firing again, Tel could be the solution that De Zerbi is looking for to complete his attacking trio.

Previously hailed as being like "[Kylian] Mbappe 2.0" or Spurs' "own version" of the Real Madrid star by analyst and Como scout, Ben Mattinson, the 20-year-old has yet to really showcase his sky-high potential over an extended period, so often flitting in and out of the starting lineup.

A starter on just nine occasions in the Premier League in 2025/26, the former Bayern Munich starlet has at least chipped in with three goals in that time, while also flourishing in the recent win over Atletico Madrid under Tudor.

Part of a front three that included Simons and Kolo Muani on the night, Tel did drift over to the right to tee up his compatriot for the game's opener, supplying a delightful dinked cross into the penalty area.

That moment of magic highlighted what the youngster can offer as a right-winger, mirroring the aforementioned Mbappe in being able to operate all across the frontline if required.

With his devastating speed and dribbling prowess - having averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per game this season - the one-time Rennes wonderkid could be the difference-maker De Zerbi is looking for.

Indeed, the Italian previously revealed that he had tried to sign the young marksman during his time in charge at the Stade Velodrome.

The 46-year-old is evidently a fan, with now the time to thrust Tel into the action, thus ending this flawed Kolo Muani experiment and putting the final nail in the coffin on the striker's forgettable loan spell in north London.

Everton now lining up move for 30-goal Thierno Barry upgrade who's a national hero - Football FanCast
Description

Everton want to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window, and the Friedkin group are now lining up a move for AZ Alkmaar star Troy Parrott.

Thierno Barry struggling to force his way into David Moyes' plans

Thierno Barry is the Toffees eighth-most expensive signing of all time, having been signed from Villarreal for £27m last summer, but it has been far from an ideal debut campaign at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the Frenchman.

Barry has fallen down the pecking order since the end of February, being used as a substitute by David Moyes in the last six Premier League matches, with Beto getting the nod at centre-forward instead.

Although Moyes' side were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, Beto got on the scoresheet for the fourth time in his last three matches, which suggests Barry could have his work cut out forcing his way back into the starting XI for the remaining five matches.

However, the 28-year-old had scored just four Premier League goals all season prior to his recent purple patch, indicating Moyes may need to bring in a more consistent striker in the summer transfer window.

Parrott would fit the bill, having scored a whopping 30 goals in all competitions for AZ Alkmaar this season, while also making headlines for national side Ireland.

Indeed, the 24-year-old became a national hero after scoring a hat-trick against Hungary to secure Ireland a place in the semi-final of the World Cup qualifiers.

Interestingly, Everton are now lining up a summer move for Parrott, according to a report from TEAMtalk, and they could have an advantage in the race for the Ireland international's signature, as he is believed to have been a boyhood Toffees fan.

Although the former Tottenham Hotspur man has been playing in the Eredivisie, he has been far more impressive in the league this season than Barry, which suggests he could be an upgrade.

Troy Parrott's Eredivisie stats

Parrott has been a key player for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, and he is the league's joint-second top scorer, although he could have far more goals to his name, having missed 22 big chances.

Thierno Barry's Premier League stats

Barry, on the other hand, has averaged fewer than half the number of goals per 90 than the AZ Alkmaar star, and he has struggled to craft opportunities for his teammates.

From ecstasy to agony. Tottenham Hotspur's season shown in microcosm on Saturday afternoon.

Up against Roberto De Zerbi's former employers, Brighton and Hove Albion, the Lilywhites were much improved in just the Italian's second game in charge, with the returning Xavi Simons looking to have clinched a much-needed win following his stunning, curling effort from range.

That moment from the mercurial Dutchman was euphoric, although frustratingly for the hosts, it had not come late enough, with De Zerbi's men failing to hang on amid an extended period of stoppage time.

There remains plenty to build on, although with the north Londoners having gambled on Tudor, the new boss has little time for teething issues, particularly in midfield.

De Zerbi has chopped and changed already in his two games in charge, although the one constant in the centre of the park has been Conor Gallagher - should that remain the case this weekend?

Analysing Conor Gallagher's game in numbers vs Brighton

With Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall making way for the more experienced duo of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur, Spurs did appear to have greater control over proceedings, the latter of that pair looking particularly solid in front of the back four.

Those two alterations allowed Gallagher to be unleashed in a more advanced midfield role to complete the trio, the Englishman leading the press in what was a creditably relentless, all-action performance.

Indeed, it was certainly difficult to fault the 26-year-old's work ethic, having at one stage charged down opposition 'keeper, Bart Verbruggen, hunting the Dutchman in an almost NFL-style run.

With seven duels won from nine, and four recoveries made, there was certainly endeavour to Gallagher's performance, while he was neat and tidy in possession, after recording a solid 88% pass accuracy rate.

That said, there was little more than that on the ball, with the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid man registering just a solitary key pass, while having finished with a total progression distance of -4.4m.

In essence, the £34m signing typically went backwards when in possession, with De Zerbi seeing the benefits of a more solid midfield trio, albeit with Gallagher and co lacking the creativity to feed the likes of Dominic Solanke ahead of them.

Thankfully, there are now options at his disposal following a raft of injury returns, ensuring Gallagher could find himself out of the team next time around.

De Zerbi could now replace Gallagher with £40m Spurs star

Almost immediately, the withdrawal of Gallagher paid off, with his replacement, Lucas Bergvall, pouncing to help to tee up Simons' late stunner after only just entering the field.

That had come after a difficult outing for the young Swede a week earlier away at Sunderland, however, with the 20-year-old replaced on the hour mark after registering just 19 touches, having lost all 12 of his duels and recorded a pass accuracy rate of just 70%.

He might well need to remain something of an impact player instead, ensuring De Zerbi could look to James Maddison as the favoured option for that creative midfield berth, provided the 29-year-old is fit and firing again.

Maddison, despite having not played a minute on Saturday, was a welcome sight on the bench after such a lengthy absence, with the former Leicester City star having not featured at all since May and the days of Ange Postecoglou.

It can be no coincidence that Spurs have plummeted to such depths in a season in which neither Maddison nor Dejan Kulusevski have featured, with both Thomas Frank and Tudor lacking any real sense of creativity during their respective spells in charge.

For instance, the aforementioned Simons leads the way at the club this season with regard to 'big chances' created, although his tally of seven is well below the norm at N17, with five players hitting double figures for that metric in 2023/24, including Maddison (11).

The Englishman's time in north London may have been severely impacted by injury, although his record speaks for itself, currently resting on 37 goals and assists in his 75 games in all competitions.

As pundit Jamie Carragher noted at the time of his signing back in 2023, Maddison fits the mould of maverick, creative players who have dazzled for Spurs in the past, the Liverpool legend name-checking Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle.

"For now, Maddison looks like the prototype Spurs player, following in the traditions of Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle – an individual who puts a smile on supporters’ faces.

"Football is always more joyful when characters like Maddison see the game as an art more than a science. He is one of those rare footballers that the home fans adore and even rival fans cannot help but be endeared by."

A smile on the face would be welcome at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium right now, with 'Madders' boasting that knack for being able to win a game on his own, or conjure up a moment of playmaking magic, just like Gascoigne and Hoddle before him.

That pair are certified Spurs legends, and while Maddison may not be in that category as things stand, the £40m man could well be if he lifts this struggling side to safety over the coming weeks.

Gallagher's work rate and endeavour is to his credit, but it is his compatriot who is the real game-changer in the midfield ranks.

He's "very similar to Kane": £22m star now wants to sign for Spurs

He's "very similar to Kane": £22m star now wants to sign for Spurs - Football FanCast
Description

Harry Kane has got what he wanted. After a fruitless, yet prolific spell as Tottenham Hotspur's undisputed talisman, the England skipper is now reaping the rewards of his decision to leave back in 2023.

Claiming Bundesliga titles - of which he now has two - is no significant story considering the might of Bayern Munich, although it is the manner in which Kane has done it which has been particularly impressive.

Already up to 51 goals for the season in all competitions, the 32-year-old has 136 in 139 games in total for the German giants, reaffirming his status as arguably the game's best number nine right now.

Back in north London, meanwhile, the wait goes on for a genuine successor to the academy graduate to emerge, with Dominic Solanke and co just not quite cutting it as things stand.

£22m star wants to join Spurs regardless of relegation

Saturday provided a much-improved performance for Roberto De Zerbi's men against Brighton and Hove Albion, although the forward line is still struggling to click into gear.

Indeed, starting striker Solanke has netted just three Premier League goals in what has been an injury-hit campaign, while Randal Kolo Muani has scored only once in the top-flight following his loan switch from Paris Saint-Germain.

Reinforcements are required, although much will depend on whether or not the Lilywhites can be dragged to safety, even if the likes of James Trafford are believed to be keen on the move regardless.

Fellow rising star, Troy Parrott, is also believed to fall into that category, with football.london's Alasdair Gold reporting that the ex-Spurs starlet wants to re-join his former side this summer, even if they fall into the Championship.

As noted by Gold, the Republic of Ireland star was sold on to AZ Alkmaar for just £6.7m in the summer of 2024, a deal that included a 20% sell-on clause, with the 24-year-old now valued at closer to €25m (£22m).

The report suggests that a raft of elite clubs are taking a look at him, namely Napoli, Real Betis, Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax, although Parrott himself appears to be open to settling some unfinished business back at N17.

Why Parrott could be the long-awaited successor to Kane

It remains remarkable to think that Ange Postecoglou was able to steer Spurs to a fifth-place finish in the immediate aftermath of Kane's exit, even with a direct replacement for the club's record scorer having not been signed until the following summer.

That patience hasn't exactly paid off, it must be said, with the eventual arrival - Solanke - scoring just 12 league goals in two seasons now in north London.

Richarlison, meanwhile, has netted 25 league goals in his four-season stay at the club, ensuring centre-forward should certainly be the real priority heading into this summer.

Whether Parrott can be that long-awaited successor to Kane remains to be seen, with his previous stint at the club only yielding four first-team appearances, having been sent out on a string of loan spells prior to his permanent departure two years ago.

It didn't work out as planned first time around, although the Irishman has certainly flourished since then, scoring 50 goals in just 92 games at AZ, after previously netting 17 in 32 at Excelsior back in 2023/24.

Like Kane in his youth, his prior loan stints in England's EFL weren't exactly stellar, scoring just 16 goals across his time at Millwall, MK Dons, Preston and Ipswich, although that lower league experience appears to have done him the world of good amid his current exploits.

This season, in particular, Parrott has been prolific in Dutch football, scoring or assisting 41 times in just 45 games in all competitions, only recently netting in the final to claim KNVB Cup glory for his side.

At international level too, the Dubliner has emerged as a centre-piece of an improving side, hitting 11 in 35 senior caps to date, including his five-goal spree against Portugal and Hungary in World Cup qualifying.

He's an elite, proven goalscorer for both club and country now, while also boasting a real creative instinct too, with Gold noting that he would perfectly fit De Zerbi's high-press set-up.

In the view of one prominent Premier League analyst, he is so "similar to Harry Kane", boding well for the impact he can make if afforded consistent game time back at N17.

As things stand, Parrott very much appears like the one that got away as far as Tottenham are concerned, although the £22m-rated striker's willingness to return could open the door for a second act.

Spurs set to sign Premier League star who can be their next captain after Romero

Spurs set to sign Premier League star who can be their next captain after Romero - Football FanCast
Description

Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Roberto De Zerbi. It's a fun time, right? Right...? Think again.

While there have been signs of fight under the Italian, leading against Brighton and very nearly winning last Sunday, it couldn't really have been a worse start since becoming Spurs boss.

Within days of arriving he was dealt the blow that Mohammed Kudus would miss the rest of the season. In his first game in charge, he was forced to substitute his captain, Cristian Romero.

The Argentine is another who has been ruled out for the season, leaving the club without yet another key player. Their luck with injuries this season has been absolutely shocking.

What the future holds for Cristian Romero at Tottenham

Say what you like about Romero's ill-discipline, his social media statements and his demeanour on the pitch. This is a fighter, a warrior, a South American battler who is precisely the type of character you want in your side when the going gets tough.

For Spurs, this is not just another injury blow. To lose their captain in the circumstances they did is a bitter pill to swallow.

Against Sunderland, striker Brian Brobbey pushed the Argentine straight into Antonin Kinsky, only for the defender to stay on the turf.

It was later confirmed that Romero has suffered a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament. He left the field in tears, understandably so with his World Cup hopes now in doubt too.

Speaking last weekend, De Zerbi was full of sympathy, saying: "First of all, Romero loves Tottenham, people have to know he's suffering for this injury, suffering because he can't play for us again this season. He's a great captain for us."

Regardless of whether the central defender loves Spurs, it's highly likely he has played his last game for the club, particularly if they do suffer relegation to the Championship.

Should they stay up then obviously their chances of keeping the skipper soar. Yet, this is a player who has attracted plenty of interest in the past. He's not just caught the eye of Real Madrid in the past but recent rumours suggest that Manchester United have considered launching their own bid to keep him in English football.

For Spurs supporters, that would surely be the worst eventuality.

If Romero does depart, then finding another captain will be key.

How Spurs could replace Cristian Romero's leadership

In all honesty, the Lilywhites are hardly blessed with leadership options. Once James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski return, providing they do, they will be looked at to inspire proceedings on the pitch.

Conor Gallagher may well have been a candidate had his time at the club started well. Archie Gray could be a captain in the future as well.

The most obvious replacement would be fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven but what if Spurs actually dipped their toes into the transfer market to replace Romero?

Well, it may not be a like-for-like replacement but the addition of Andrew Robertson from Liverpool would certainly help fill the leadership void left behind if the Argentine leaves north London.

Spurs looked at signing the Scottish full-back over the winter but he ultimately stayed to see out his contract at Anfield. He has confirmed that he will be departing on a free transfer in the summer and, providing Tottenham stay up, they are in pole position to sign him.

Fabrizio Romano revealed at the weekend: "(Robertson) is set to join Tottenham if they stay up in the Premier League. According to my information, there is already in this case an agreement on everything between Robertson and Tottenham."

It's exciting times as far as transfer are concerned, but at the age of 32, just what could the Scot offer Spurs?

Well, a winner of the Premier League and the Champions League, he'd bring an elite mentality with him, a know-how that very few in De Zerbi's squad possess.

Sure, his powers may well be waning as he approaches the back end of his career but he's one of the most reliable players in the top-flight of English football and has been for a very long time. Jose Mourinho, the Jose Mourinho, has celebrated him as an "incredible" player.

Only one defender in Premier League history has more assists (60) than Robertson. He's pipped to the post by former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold (64).

Boasting an incredible left-foot, it is undoubtedly his leadership qualities that make him such a standout signing should they get it done.

The veteran left-back is the captain of Scotland and has been since 2018. He has worn the armband over 49 times for his country, rubberstamping what an influential character he is.

Sure, Spurs will need an out-and-out centre-back to replace Romero but they will also need someone capable of taking on the captaincy. Robertson could well be just the man in that regard.

Contact already made: Aston Villa now keen on signing £50m Premier League star - Football FanCast
Description

Aston Villa have now entered the race to sign midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who may have to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Gone are the days when the so-called 'big six' dominated the Premier League, with Villa firmly on course to qualify for Europe for the fourth season in a row under Unai Emery, and it is looking increasingly likely they will be returning to the Champions League.

Five Premier League sides are guaranteed to be playing Champions League football next season, and the Villans moved ten points clear of sixth-place Chelsea courtesy of Tammy Abraham's dramatic late winner against Sunderland at the weekend.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are in serious danger of being relegated from the top flight for the first time since 1977, currently sitting two points from safety, having failed to win a single Premier League game in 2026.

Villa fans know all too well how it feels to be relegated to the Championship, and just how difficult it can be to get promoted, having spent three seasons in the second tier from 2016 - 2019.

Villa looking to raid Tottenham for Bergvall

With Spurs in real trouble, a report from TEAMtalk has revealed they may be forced to cash-in on Bergvall this summer, and Aston Villa are now waiting in the wings to sign the midfielder, alongside Arsenal and Chelsea.

Emery's side made direct contact about a deal for the Swedish maestro during the January transfer window, and they remain keen on securing his signature this summer.

The 20-year-old is enjoying life under Roberto De Zerbi, but, unsurprisingly, he doesn't want to play in the Championship, which means Tottenham could look to cash-in for £50m.

The starlet has been lauded as "unbelievable" by YouTuber Alice Talks Football, and has one goal and four assists to his name in 47 Premier League outings.

Emery says top-five finish is more important than Europa League

Aston Villa have gone over 30 years without winning a major trophy, after lifting the 1996 League Cup, but Emery has made it clear he believes finishing in the top five is more important than winning the Europa League.

The Spaniard said: “For me, to finish in the top four, top five in the Premier League is the most important. And to be successful, I can feel through it successful this year.

“Of course, we are adding another competition, and to try to play for a trophy. Last year, we played an FA Cup semi-final. We played semi-final, but we lost. And losing, you don’t have nothing.”

Although the Premier League is seemingly the priority, Villa have a golden opportunity to end the long wait for a trophy, as they will take on either Braga or SC Freiburg in the Europa League final, if they make it past relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea are now preparing a transfer proposal for Lucas Bergvall, with the midfielder's future at Tottenham Hotspur in doubt.

The Blues may be forced to bring in a new midfielder in the summer, given that Enzo Fernandez may now be prepared to leave at the end of the season, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

"The message I’m receiving on this Enzo Fernandez story is that Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea had some conversations about the contract to discuss potential new terms for Enzo Fernandez. At the moment, they could not reach an agreement on a new contract.

"If the situation remains like this, with no agreement from now until the summer transfer window, Fernandez could eventually consider proposals in the summer."

It is perhaps no surprise the Argentinian may not want to remain at Stamford Bridge, given Liam Rosenior's side's major drop-off in form in recent weeks, losing their last four Premier League games on the bounce.

The west Londoners are at serious risk of missing out on the Champions League, but their campaign has been nowhere near as disastrous as London rivals Tottenham.

Spurs are two points from safety in the Premier League, with just five games remaining, and should they suffer relegation to the Championship, Roberto De Zerbi may be forced to cash-in on some important players.

Chelsea preparing proposal for Lucas Bergvall

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states the Lilywhites could be forced to listen to 'creative' offers for Bergvall, should they finish inside the bottom three, and Chelsea are now preparing a proposal for the midfielder.

Indeed, a bid is in the works, with the Blues looking to tempt their rivals into a sale, but there could be competition for his signature, with Aston Villa and Arsenal also named as potential suitors.

However, Chelsea are leading the Gunners in the race for the Danish maestro, as the intense rivalry could be a stumbling block for Mikel Arteta's side.

What Pep Guardiola has said about Lucas Bergvall

It has been far from the ideal campaign for Tottenham, but Bergvall received major plaudits from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola last season, who said: “Bergvall, every time he has the ball and runs, he’s unstoppable. Spence, Pedro Porro, Udogie, Kulusevski, Son. It’s an incredible physical team with a clear idea to play, and they play really good.”

A deal for the 20-year-old would be expensive, with a £50m price tag being touted, and Spurs are desperate to keep hold of the youngster, who has two goals and nine assists to his name in 75 appearances for the north London club.

However, David Ornstein expects two signings in other positions, with BlueCo expected to stand by Rosenior and back him this summer.

Description

If Tottenham Hotspur are going to preserve their Premier League status this season, they are going to have to do it the hard way, fighting tooth and nail over the final weeks of the season.

In fairness to Roberto De Zerbi, he has had an impact on this struggling squad, with the performance against Brighton last weekend a testament to that, even if deeply-embedded habits prevented Tottenham from celebrating Xavi Simons' special strike as a winner.

Two points behind West Ham United and trailing Nottingham Forest by a further three, 18th-place Spurs are in purgatory all right, and De Zerbi needs to hit his team selection with pinpoint accuracy if the Londoners are going to play at the highest level next season.

Time is running out, and tough choices must be made. However, with Rodrigo Bentancur back in the starting line-up after injury (and with James Maddison ostensibly fit after his long-term layoff), the head coach can drop Yves Bissouma next time out.

Why De Zerbi must drop Bissouma at Spurs

Bissouma, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season, and even if Tottenham pull off an escape act, it doesn't seem very likely that the Mali international will extend his stay down N17.

Opportunities have been few and far between for Bissouma this season. He has been injured on numerous occasions and missed a chunk of the winter period due to the African Cup of Nations.

Against Brighton, he was one of the bigger underperformers, unable to channel the physicality that has formed the core of his midfield skillset over the years.

The 29-year-old is a talented centre-midfielder, well seasoned in the Premier League, but he's left too much to be desired for too long, and many fans will questIon why he has not been offloaded at some stage over the past several years.

Bissouma lost all of his ground duels on Saturday and lacked any kind of progression in possession. He is not quite match fit, of course, but De Zerbi can ill-afford to wait for the tough-tackler to get back up to speed.

It's time for Bissouma to return to the bench, with another Spurs star surely capable of taking his place across the closing weeks and indeed the next several years.

Spurs' "young Declan Rice" could end Bissouma's N17 career

Tottenham have plenty of talent in their first-team, but things just haven't worked for a few years now, with last season's Europa League triumph covering over deep issues.

Throughout these testing times, though, Archie Gray has stood out among his senior peers, outperforming many, playing with more maturity and conviction. Only 20 years old, he has been thrown into the deep end all right, featuring prominently since joining from boyhood club Leeds United as an 18-year-old in 2024.

Comparable to "a young Declan Rice", according to The Athletic's Duncan Alexander, Gray's versatility and mindset set him apart from his peers. Sharp in possession and combative against the ball, this could really be a future Rice rival in the Three Lions set-up.

A natural midfielder, Gray has been played across any number of positions at Tottenham, a testament to his versatility but also evidence of dysfunctions in north London that would surely have hindered a lesser player.

Instead, Gray has only looked forward, galvanising those around him. In that, there is certainly something Rice-esque about him, with the England superstar instrumental in taking West Ham away from the relegation fodder and into Europe to secure silverware under David Moyes.

The fact of the matter is that Gray hasn't been afforded enough chances to impress in the middle, his natural position, his best position.

With Bentancur back, surely he needs to start over someone like Bissouma? You would think that his technicality could be important when Spurs travel to Wolves next weekend, and it might just spell the end for an experienced player who has been outperformed by one a decade younger than him.
