Sweden boss Graham Potter has now shared an update on injured Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski and his current condition, hinting at a potential return date.

Seven months later, Kulusevski remains unavailable and has failed to make a single appearance under Thomas Frank.

His prolonged absence has seriously impacted Tottenham's creativity, particularly given James Maddison's ACL injury that will keep the playmaker out for most of this campaign.

Spurs have been forced to rely on makeshift solutions in the number ten position, with summer signing Xavi Simons being their only natural alternative in that role.

"I met Dejan last week, as I’m aware he’s fighting back from his injury. I had a good conversation with him," Potter explained.

“He really has had a complicated injury. That’s the truth. He’s on his way back and he’s in a good place, but when you’re close you can have setbacks and you can have frustrating days when things don’t go the way you want because it’s a long process. He’s in good spirits and in a good place, and desperate to come back and help.”

When asked if Kulusevski will be ready for the Ukraine clash, Potter said he is 'convinced'.

"I’m convinced of that (that Kulusevski will be in March)," the coach added.

"That’s my feeling based on having spoken to him and understanding where he is. I think that’s the last part of the rehabilitation that he needs to go through.

“My experience when someone has been out for a long time is that it can be a bit up and down and frustrating, but he’s in a good place. I think the problem with football – and looking ahead to March – is that nobody knows for sure where he’s going to be. If you can predict that, you’re a genius. It’s about being patient with him and supporting him. I’m confident he’ll be there.”

Few could've envisaged that Kulusevski would be absent for this long, and Frank will be desperate to call upon him at the earliest opportunity.

The ex-Serie A star bagged 10 goals and 11 assists in 50 appearances last term, marking himself out as one of Spurs' chief creators, and they're a much better side when he's available for selection.

Losing both him and Maddison has undoubtedly had a major effect on Tottenham, but it shouldn't be too long before he takes to the pitch again.

Tottenham Hotspur have turned the page in recent matches, but Thomas Frank will know he has much more still to write before his north London project is firing on all cylinders.

Toney is into his second season in Saudi Arabia, and while he fancies a return to the Premier League to bolster his chances of making Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions squad for the World Cup, tax-related obstacles could prove a hindrance for the £400k-per-week centre-forward.

Why Toney would be perfect for Spurs

Toney has scored 42 goals and supplied eight assists across 62 appearances for Al-Ahli, and though the move has been lucrative for the former Brentford striker, it has come at the expense of sporting merit as he was growing into a superstar.

But this is a powerful, physical centre-forward. He is a well-known name on the English scene and he might just have a point to prove after a year overseas.

Could it be that Toney would even prove to be a better signing than someone like the 25-year-old Semenyo, who would cost £65m?

Toney, after all, knows Frank's system well, having lifted the Bees into the Premier League and kept them comfortably afloat with prolific performances over three campaigns.

Semenyo, let's not forget, has fallen from form after an emphatic start to the season. In fact, you would have to trace back to October 3rd to find the last time the Ghana international notched a goal involvement in the Premier League.

And with Dominic Solanke locked in the infirmary, Richarlison inconsistent and potentially into his final year in north London, surely an experienced and proven number nine would be the icing on the cake for a Spurs side desperate for an upswing in attacking results.

If there are any qualms over Toney's capacity to dovetail into the Tottenham culture, it might be pertinent to note that he has been hailed by England teammate Declan Rice saying he is "like Harry Kane" for his devastating goalscoring ability but also his link-up play and intelligence when deeper.

It was a joyful and poignant moment when Heung-min Son made his homecoming before Tottenham Hotspur defeated Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

He implored Spurs supporters not to forget him, and that's not something that's likely to happen after the club legend crowned many years of thrilling service with a European trophy before the summer.

However, Richarlison hasn't been the standout forward in the Londoners' squad. Mohammed Kudus, for example, has stood out since completing a £55m transfer from West Ham United during the summer. His pace and playmaking have been shining lights throughout a difficult start to the season for the club as a creative front.

Xavi Simons now has two goals in two games. In the Premier League last weekend, he was immense, converting against Brentford after a spectacular solo run and finish.

The 21-year-old has endured a tough start to life in England, but he's really coming into his own now, looking every bit the £50m-plus player that ENIC Group paid for. Who knows, he might even play himself into a more affluent ballpark down the line.

He's not the only one, though. One of Tottenham's most promising youngsters has really settled into this new Spurs system, making headway after a season under Ange's wing that left him exposed and under the cosh.

Tottenham have a long-term project which promises so much. Plenty of polish still needs to be applied, but the likes of Lucas Bergvall and out-on-loan stars Mikey Moore and Luka Vuskovic are stars of the future, for sure.

However, Tottenham also have an up-and-coming English talent who could shape into Frank's own version of Arsenal centrepiece Declan Rice in Archie Gray, who has already chalked up 57 senior appearances for the Lilywhites for about £30m in July 2024. Not only has Gray established himself in Spurs' first team despite more than his share of adversity, but he has been noted as a "future £100m centre-midfielder" by analyst Ben Mattinson, gifted technically and combative and cultured beyond his years.

His performance against Slavia Prague on Tuesday drew plenty of plaudits and served as a reminder to those of a Spurs persuasion that they have a prospect with the potential to be as good as any of his English countrymen.

Rice burst onto the scene with West Ham, led David Moyes' side to their golden era, lifted the Conference League title before leaving.

Now plying his trade for Arsenal, Rice is gunning for the Premier League title. He is one of the best midfielders in the world, having completed his move to the Emirates for a £105m fee.

Could we see Gray hit the same high notes? There's certainly a weight of expectation around the 19-year-old's skillset, and now that he is playing most of his football in midfield, his natural area, he is shining, making progress.

Postecoglou's injury troubles last year led Gray to be shoehorned into central or wide defensive roles. This came at the expense of fluency and progress on an individual level.

He's making headway now, alright, with content creator AliceTalksFooty even noting that, "Archie Gray has really impressed me every time I have seen him play under Thomas Frank."

Frank apparently views Richarlison as an 'expendable' member of his squad, even if he selects the 28-year-old regularly, with Solanke and Kolo Muani likely to be his first choices once the former at last returns to full fitness.

Recent footage emerged showing the 29-year-old midfielder allegedly inhaling nitrous oxide in early November, despite being sidelined through injury at the time.

This marks the second such incident involving Bissouma, who was previously suspended by the club in August after similar footage surfaced.

The midfielder issued a public apology then, acknowledging a "severe lack of judgment" and recognizing the health risks involved, but his latest alleged breach has now exhausted the club's patience.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Slavia Prague in the Champions League, Frank said: "It’s an internal matter that we are dealing with at the moment and when we have dealt with that, then I will comment on it."

Now, Crook reports that Tottenham are ready to sell Bissouma in January following this incident, which has effectively sealed his fate in north London.

Bissouma earns over £55,000-per-week, but has now become completely surplus to requirements under Frank.

Brown, moreover, is on an upward trajectory, with analyst Spencer Mossman claiming earlier in 2025 that he is "one-two years away from being the most coveted left back" in the world. Already, several of the Premier League's biggest sides want to bring him over, suggesting that he is indeed ahead of that prediction already.

Frankfurt has a rather porous defence this season, and that is a concern, but Brown is one of the standouts, showcasing an impressive mix of qualities. Furthermore, he rode the crest of a wave into the current campaign, having played so well in the Bundesliga last year.

Destiny Udogie is sidelined with a hamstring injury which will keep him out until January, while Randal Kolo Muani is doubtful after limping through Saturday's victory.

Brennan Johnson is also 'touch and go' for the encounter, according to Frank, but one significant positive looked to have emerged from Monday's training session.

James Maddison was spotted working on the grass for the first time since rupturing his ACL during August's pre-season friendly against Newcastle, with Frank providing an update on the Englishman.

Regrettably, while the £170,000-per-week playmaker sparked excitement when he was clocked in training, Frank has confirmed in quotes relayed by The Press Association, that Maddison still won't be back for a 'long time'.

“It's very early stages," Frank told reporters.

"It's still a long-term injury, so it's good to see him out there, but very early stages. There's no specific time frame. It'll be a long time, unfortunately, before he's available."

The 29-year-old, who bagged 22 goals contributions in all competitions last term (12 goals, 11 assists), has been a sore miss for Spurs as they heavily rely on the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Simons for their creativity.

Simons' phenomenal solo run and goal against Brentford will have done the Dutchman a world of good for his confidence following real criticism since his marquee move from Leipzig in the summer.

The pressure is on him to deliver in the ongoing absence of both Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, with Frank also remaining vague about the latter's recovery timeline.

"Yeah, as I said, I will confirm when he's available for the squad," Frank said about Kulusevski.

"It's part of the recovery. There’s a plan for everything.”

After Slavia, Tottenham travel to struggling Nottingham Forest on Sunday, and only a win will do there too.

Thomas Frank has changed the dynamics at Tottenham Hotspur, and though it's been a tough start to the campaign for the Londoners, we are perhaps seeing shoots of success.

Spurs had only won once across eight matches before Frank challenged his former club, Brentford, and came away with the spoils, thus reviving a fight for European contention. There is much ground still to cover this season, but defeat on home turf against the Bees would have made things tricky indeed.

There was something to be observed about Tottenham's attacking play, with their xG total against Brentford coming in at 2.18, their highest in the Premier League since the season opener against Burnley in a 3-0 win.

Expected Goals (xG) is a metric designed to measure the probability of a shot resulting in a goal.

But what about the defending? Tottenham have not been as compact and well-drilled at the rearguard this season as may have been anticipated when Frank was appointed. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, elite centre-backs both, have more to give.

Before keeping his protege, Keith Andrews, out, Frank watched on as Tottenham conceded 15 goals across five Premier League matches, failing to win any of those games.

At times, Spurs have been something of a shambles at the back. Some of the defending against Fulham just over a week ago would be a case in point.

What is the source of this struggle? Structural problems? A taint lingering from the erratic Ange Postecoglou era?

The main thing is that many of the goals Tottenham have shipped this term have been avoidable - though, aren't they all?

Tottenham put in an improved defensive display, but Romero and Van de Ven and the rest need to work harder still if they are to rival some of the sternest Spurs defences in modern times. Think Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Think Ledley King.

For now, Frank must make do with what he has got, but come next season, he may find he has the north London club's next version of King ascending to first-team action.

Spurs' new version of Ledley King

King was quite the defender. Rivalling Harry Kane for the crown of Tottenham's finest academy graduate of the past three decades, he broke into the first team in 1999, playing the sum of his career at White Hart Lane.

Harry Redknapp once hailed King as "an absolute freak", so powerful and tenacious in the defensive third.

The former England international was sharp-witted and boasted that rare ability to time things to perfection, his defensive skillset operating on some unerring internal stopwatch.

To have a new prospect emerge and emulate the club icon would be a difficult thing indeed, but in Luka Vuskoic, ENIC Group might just have their man.

Tottenham signed Vuskovic in 2023 and have handed him to Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga on a one-year loan deal. The 18-year-old is thriving in Germany, showing he has the talent to rival someone like King down the line, perhaps even with a more robust and promising skillset than someone like Van de Ven.

Van de Ven can score goals, alright, but so can Vuskovic, the teenage talent showing in Germany this year that he has something of a penchant for the spectacular.

A rare profile, Vuskovic ranks among the top 3% of central defenders in the Bundesliga this season for goals scored, the top 9% for chances created and the top 1% for aerial duel success rate per 90, as per FBref. He has what it takes to be a superstar.

The Premier League is regarded by many to be the toughest league in the world, but it's interesting to note that Vuskovic is perhaps playing slicker stuff than Spurs' athletic centre-back, and that bodes well for his future in London.

The fact that Van de Ven has won less than half of his duels in the Premier League this season is an indicator that he needs to do more to stop the rot that has spread.

But such rot is in its early stages, and can be dealt with. Frank has options for the rest of the term, but adding Vuskovic to the mix could inject that King-like presence to help take the project to the next level.

Anylst Ben Mattinson described him as a "freak athlete" and a "freak talent" with a "scary ceiling," so the echoes between him and King are underscored there.

Whether the Croatian talent adapts to life in the Premier League remains to be seen, but the signs are promising. He could be a centre-half who ends up overtaking two top stars in Van de Ven and Romero, scratching a similar ballpark to someone like King.

Tottenham secure first Premier League win since late October

The pressure has been mounting on Thomas Frank in recent weeks, with it even emerging that Tottenham were considering a move for Barcelona manager Xavi as a replacement, but the Dane may have bought himself more time courtesy of a victory against Brentford.

Spurs breezed to a 2-0 win against the Bees, which was their first triumph in the Premier League since winning 3-0 at Everton at the end of October, with Richarlison opening the scoring after 26 minutes, finding the back of the net for the seventh time in all competitions this season.

Xavi Simons was the creator, and the Dutchman then went on to score his first goal since moving to north London just before half-time, sealing all three points for Frank's side in the process.

Simons has received heavy criticism for making a slow start to life at Tottenham, with Jamie O'Hara left particularly scathing after the defeat against Fulham, but he clearly has the full support of teammate Van de Ven, who singled the attacking midfielder out for high praise after Brentford.

“Obviously he didn’t start the last games, but I know Xavi has the quality that he can create things for us.

“He can be really important for us. I know that. For you guys, of course, it’s more difficult to see that, but I think he showed it by himself as well.

“He did an unbelievable performance and was really important for the team.

“He kept training hard, he kept training every day to become a better player every day over and over again.

“Of course, in the moments where he’s a bit down because he didn’t start, I’m there for him and I speak with him.

“I said, ‘Xavi, trust me, your time will come, don’t you worry’, and obviously you saw his qualities.”

Simons needs to build on his Brentford performance

Frank will no doubt be delighted the Netherlands international appears to be finding his feet, receiving a SofaScore match rating of 9.5 after registering a goal and an assist against Keith Andrews' side.

Having finally shown what he can produce, the 22-year-old needs to build on that performance, starting on Tuesday against Slavia Prague, with Spurs set to host the Czech side in their sixth Champions League game.

Frank's side have looked bereft of ideas at times this season, with only a Richarlison wonder goal preventing them from suffering an even heavier loss against Arsenal back in November.

As such, Simons needs to step up, and Tottenham will be hoping the former RB Leipzig man can start recording similar attacking numbers to what he did during his time with the German club, registering 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 games.
