The 27-year-old Argentina centre-back, who had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, was named as Spurs’ new skipper on Wednesday following the departure of Son Heung-min.

Romero had entered the final two years of his previous deal, but has signed new terms running until 2029, the PA news agency understands.

Romero, who starred in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in May, said: “I’m very happy here in the club. For me this club is the best in the world.

“The last two weeks, first captain and now signing the contract with the club, for me it’s a fantastic decision. My message to the fans is thank you for the amazing support every day and every match.

“After winning the Europa League, it’s like a special season now. In football, sometimes good moments, bad moments. The most important thing for me is to stay all together. We want to win. Maybe why not win again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone.”

This news will be a major boost to new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, who fielded several questions on the topic of Romero’s commitment in Friday’s press conference – days after he named him captain.

“I see a very big and very good player. What I like about him and why I have chosen him as captain is his leadership qualities on the pitch,” Frank explained. “There is a big respect for him from the players. Off the pitch as well he also sets the standards.

“The staff have said to me they’ve never seen him train that well. He’s in a very good place. I see a player that will want to lead the team and push the team.”

Centre-back Romero first joined Spurs in 2021 on loan from Atalanta before the transfer was made permanent a year later.

The 27-year-old has been critical of the club previously, pointedly saying last December that the spending of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea every year were “things to imitate” because then Tottenham “could easily be competing for the title every year” with the “structure” they have in place.

He also sent out a cryptic message on social media in the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal in June and praised his achievements “despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist”.

However, Romero proved his commitment by playing a crucial role in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in May, which ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club.

Romero captained Spurs in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final and also wore the armband in both semi-final legs against Bodo/Glimt.

The World Cup-winner was subsequently named Europa League Player of the Season after success in Bilbao and the first club trophy of his career added to an incredible haul of silverware at international level.

After Romero helped Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup either side of Copa America triumphs, he will aim to lead Tottenham to further trophies under Frank.

Full-back Djed Spence has also signed a new deal at Spurs. Versatile full-back Spence only signed fresh terms last October until 2028, but has been rewarded for a fine breakthrough campaign at Tottenham.

Spence made 35 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, after eventually being handed his full debut in December – two-and-a-half years after he first joined the club.

After Spence was deemed a “club signing” by former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte in 2022, he had mixed loans at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa, but forced his way into Postecoglou’s plans and has quickly gained the trust of Frank.

Personal terms have apparently been agreed and talks between the clubs are advancing rapidly.

Spurs have chased the 26-year-old all summer and are now ahead of Arsenal in the race for his signature.

Eze started Palace’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, but reports suggest a full agreement between the clubs is expected this week.

According to the Sun, Eze is “set to seal” a move to north London, while Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Daniel Levy and Steve Parish held direct talks on Monday.

Posting on X, he said: “Tottenham and Crystal Palace chairmans Daniel Levy and Steve Parish, in direct contact today for Eberechi Eze deal.

“[I] understand Spurs are willing to offer £55m fixed fee plus £5m add-ons to get the deal done.

“Eze informed Palace last week of his desire to join Tottenham Hotspur.”

Spurs’ proposed £60m fee would still fall shy of Eze’s previous £65m release clause.

Eze informed Palace last week of his desire to join Tottenham. If completed, the deal would give Thomas Frank a creative midfielder to replace James Maddison, with Eze coming off one of his best Premier League seasons.

The England international picked up an ACL injury during pre-season, and is now expected to miss most - if not all - of Spurs’ 2025/26 campaign.

It’s a bitter blow for new manager Thomas Frank, whose side bottled a 2-0 lead in the UEFA Super Cup to lose on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain last night (August 13).

Maddison’s presence in the middle of the park was sorely missed, with Frank relying on a five-back formation and a midfield trio of Pepe Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and new signing Joao Palinha.

Manchester City’s Savinho had been touted as a potential replacement, but Spanish outlet Fichajes has now reported that one of Barcelona’s top players could be approached by the Premier League club.

They have claimed that Spurs are preparing a £60m offer for Dani Olmo, with Barcelona open to selling the midfielder to ease their ongoing financial pressures.

Olmo joined Barca from RB Leipzig in 2024 and contributed to 19 goals in his debut season. But the emergence of Fermen Lopez and the return of Gavi have limited his playing time, and manager Hansi Flick views Olmo as surplus to requirements.

The 27-year-old is experienced, versatile, and proven in European competition. Tottenham are also tracking Eberechi Eze - who is attracting Arsenal’s interest - and Real Madrid prospect Nico Paz.

For Barcelona, selling Olmo would be a sporting loss but a financial gain, freeing up wages and helping with future signings.

The UEFA Super Cup sees the winner of the Champions League play against the Europa League champions.

Having won the latter tournament with a 1-0 win against Manchester United, Spurs will be pitted against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy.

Frank has named defender Cristian Romero as the club’s new captain, after Son Heung-Min left the club this summer for LAFC.

“I think for the team, for me, for everybody involved at Tottenham Hotspur, it’s a massive game,” Frank said. “A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity. That’s how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure or whatever. So for me, massive opportunity and we will definitely embrace it.

“My players, our players, they just won a big trophy six or seven weeks ago, so they had a fantastic experience of doing that and they want to win more. It was a great feeling, everything I heard about it, fantastic experience, so the players will be ready.”

Their first Premier League game comes on Saturday, August 16, with Spurs playing host to newly-promoted Burnley.

Here is how Tottenham Hotspur will likely line up in the UEFA Super Cup tonight - with a couple of glaring omissions. As Frank has used it for most of pre-season, a 4-2-3-1 formation is expected.

GK: Vicario

Spurs’ number one is almost nailed-on to start between the sticks this season.

RB: Pedro Porro

The best senior right-back at Tottenham, the only thing that would stop him from playing is an injury.

CB: Cristian Romero

The Argentina international is an excellent choice for Spurs’ new captain.

CB: Micky Van der Ven

A pacey centre-back, Van der Ven will have his hands full with PSG’s fast attacking line tonight.

LB: Djed Spence

Destiny Udogie is fit, but having only just recovered from an injury it’s not worth the risk.

CDM: Joao Palinha

Spurs’ latest signing will get his competitive debut against PSG tonight.

CDM: Pape Matar Sarr

With Bissouma ruled out by manager Frank, Sarr could have to hold central midfield duties.

RM: Brennan Johnson

The obvious choice on the right flank, especially with Kulusevski out injured.

CAM: Mohammed Kudus

James Maddison’s ACL injury gives Kudus the opportunity to run the game through the middle of the park

LM: Bryan Gil

Fresh from his loan spell at Girona, now is the time for Gil to break into the starting XI.

ST: Dominic Solanke

Gets the nod over Richarlison for a what will likely be a physically demanding contest.

Posting to Instagram about being given the captain’s armband, Romero said: ““oday begins a new season for us, one that is truly special to me. Becoming the first captain of this beautiful club is an incredible honour.

“I arrived here four years ago with a single dream: to write my name into the club’s history and leave my mark by winning a trophy, and I achieved that.

“Now, a new journey is in front of us. A beautiful season lies ahead.

“Whatever happens along the way, I ask only one thing: stay united. There will be highs and lows, but together, nothing is impossible.”

The 33-year-old forward, who spent a decade at Tottenham and scored 173 goals in 454 games, completed a move to Los Angeles this week.

The deal is worth more than £20m, the highest transfer fee ever paid by an MLS side.

Son has signed a two-year contract at the club, and while he didn’t say what his “first choice” was, fans are presuming it was to stay at Spurs.

At his unveiling in LA, Son said: “It wasn’t my first choice - but John [Thorrington] was the first to call after the season ended. He changed my mind. He changed my heart.

“I’m here to win. I’ll bring exciting football, or soccer, whatever we’re calling it. I saw the Korean fans at the game already going wild. I wanted to jump on the pitch right then.

“I gave everything [to Spurs], but I needed a new challenge. I’m older, but I’ve still got legs, I’ve still got quality.”

Earlier, Son posted a farewell letter to Tottenham fans calling the move “the hardest decision ever.”

“When I arrived in 2015, I didn’t speak English, I didn’t know the city, but you embraced me,” he wrote. “I was just a kid from Korea with big dreams and no guarantees. Now, 10 years later, north London is part of me.

“I thought if I ever left, it would be on my terms, when we had achieved something together. With pride. With honour.”

Son joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and, alongside Harry Kane, set the Premier League record for the most goal combinations by a duo with 47.

Talks have accelerated in recent days and are now at a “critical phase,” with Spurs ready to cash in before Son’s contract expires next summer.

That is the latest rumour according to CaughtOffside, with the news outlet claiming that Son, 33, will join LAFC before the end of the transfer window.

It comes as Spurs make a number of new signings - including attacker Mohammed Kudus - although a pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White turned out to be fruitless.

Son has spent a decade at Tottenham, scoring consistently and becoming one of the club’s most beloved players.

But with his form dipping last season and time running out on his deal, Spurs see this summer as their last chance to make a return on him.

LAFC are now leading the race for his signature, which could come to the tune of £21.5m. The move could keep Son in the spotlight of European football markets, a key factor in his decision after turning down a big-money offer from Saudi Arabia.

Son scored 11 goals and added 12 assists last season, as well as helping Tottenham towards an historic Europa League trophy win. Despite his contributions, new manager Thomas Frank is looking to refresh the squad, having already brought in the likes of Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso on permanent deals.

Spurs were initially keen to keep Moore in the fold, hoping to integrate him into Thomas Frank’s squad.

But with the 17-year-old pushing for regular minutes, the club has shifted its stance and will now allow him to seek first-team football elsewhere.

Moore had a breakthrough year under Ange Postecoglou, racking up 19 appearances across all competitions, including three Premier League starts.

The feeling inside the club is that a full season of consistent minutes is crucial for his development, with Football Insider reporting that Moore will now be allowed to head out on loan.

Birmingham City and West Brom have both registered strong interest, while clubs in the Netherlands are also circling, with the Eredivisie viewed as a proven launchpad for Premier League talent.

West Brom, in particular, have an edge - former Spurs assistant Ryan Mason is eager to reunite with Moore and offer him Championship experience.

Birmingham, newly-promoted from League One, see Moore as a key piece in their push for a playoff spot.

Tottenham Hotspur fans are getting ready to welcome a new manager to Spurs, Brentford boss Thomas Frank is expected to be appointed imminently. Despite winning the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou, who presided over the club's worst-ever Premier League campaign, was sacked by the Tottenham board, in a “unanimous decision.”

The statement read: “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.

“Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month - an achievement that will live with us all forever.

“We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

“However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

“It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.

“We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home.

“News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.”

Who is Thomas Frank’s wife Nanna, do they have children?

Thomas Frank and his wife Nanna Thiel Frank lived in Hvidore in Denmark before moving to London when Thomas was appointed the boss of Brentford. The couple have three children, but attempt to keep as low a profile as possible.

Coaches’ Voice reported on Thomas Frank’s decision to move to Brentford and Thomas revealed that “Then there was Nanna, who thought it was perfect. The decision was 50 per cent me and my career, and 50 per cent Nanna and the children. We decided to go for it.”

The Times reported that “It is no surprise then, to learn that Frank studied sports psychology after taking a degree in physical education but at his lowest ebb he had to rely on his wife, Nanna, then a social worker, to supplement the £5,000 a year he was earning while he studied and coached 40 hours a week.”

The club has confirmed that Fraser Forster and Sergio Reguilon are among the players who will be released by the club this summer.

Left-back Reguilon, who joined Spurs in 2020, struggled to adapt to life in north London and was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford before picking up just four Premier League appearances this season.

Goalkeepers Alfie Whiteman and Forster also depart the club, with Timo Werner’s exit being confirmed following an unsuccessful loan spell from RB Leipzig.

Reguilon did not play a single minute of Europa League football during Tottenham’s campaign, only making two extra apperances in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup respectively.

Forster was put between the sticks in four of Tottenham’s group stage games during the European tournament, but was not named in the squad once Spurs reached the knockout rounds.

Experienced defender Ben Davies, who is out of contract this summer, was not named on the list of those being let go by the club. According to the PA news agency, a final decision on whether to trigger the 12-month option in his contract is still to be made.

Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane is out of contract at the end of June after four seasons in Germany, where he helped Bayern win multiple domestic titles, including the Bundesliga. The 29-year-old scored 13 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions this season.

Spurs’ recent Europa League triumph over Manchester United secured a long-awaited piece of silverware and confirmed their return to Champions League football - a factor that’s made them a far more appealing option for top-level players this summer.

According to Sky Sports, the former Manchester City star has been offered to Tottenham ahead of the summer transfer window.

Sane, who joined Bayern from City in 2020, is now assessing his options with interest from several Premier League clubs. Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the German international.

German outlet BILD reports that Sane has instructed his agent, Pini Zahavi, to explore potential moves to all three London clubs.

Zahavi is expected in Munich this week for talks regarding the winger’s next move.
