Manchester United have reignited their ‘interest’ in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor Maciel Furtado, simply known as John, according to UOL. The stopper has emerged on the Red Devils’ radar this summer. He has been a key player for his current club in Brazil over recent times and they face a battle to keep hold of him.

John, 29, started his career at Sao Paulo and rose up through the ranks of his boyhood club. He then switched to rivals Santos in 2011 and spent 13 years there. He then moved to Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos last year and has since been the number one.

The 3am Verdict: Manchester United could see John as someone to compete for their goalkeeping position ahead of next season. If he joined, it could push Andre Onana out of the exit door. The Brazilian lacks experience in Europe though and it may take him a while to adapt to English football if he joined. It would be a risky addition in a pretty important position.

Tottenham Hotspur eye Genoa defender Koni De Winter

Tottenham Hotspur have ‘enquired’ about Genoa defender Koni De Winter, according to reporter Ben Jacobs on X. Inter Milan are also said to be in the frame for his signature. The 23-year-old is a Belgium international with four caps under his belt so far, and is said to be valued at around €25m (£22m)

Thomas Frank is looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad with some reinforcements over the next couple of months. He could see De Winter as someone to boost his defensive ranks and add more depth to his options at the back. The Dane has left league rivals Brentford to take over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Ange Postecoglou.

The 3am Verdict: Koni De Winter is still relatively young and has potential to get better down the line. If Spurs signed him, he could be a useful long-term option for them in defence. Thomas Frank needs to get his recruitment right this summer and will be after the right type of characters. The ex-Brentford man will be under pressure from the off to get results.

Arsenal growing in confidence in pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal are ‘confident’ of striking an ambitious deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, Football Insider claim. The Gunners are hoping to tempt the attacker to move to London. Mikel Arteta’s side finished 2nd again in the table last term.

Gyokeres, 27, has played in England before with Brighton and Hove Albion and Coventry City. He has turned into one of the most prolific forwards in Europe over recent years. The Sweden international has fired 97 goals in 102 outings for Sporting and may well move on soon for a new challenge somewhere else. It is believed that he could now be available for a fee of just £51m.

The 3am Verdict: Arsenal have been crying out for a striker for a while now and they need to get one this summer. Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres would be absolutely perfect for them. He has been on fire in Portugal over recent times and should come to the Premier League. Signing him would be a massive statement of intent by the Gunners and would make the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City sit up and take notice.

The dominoes are starting to fall in the Premier League after the summer transfer window reopened, with Chelsea close to completing a blockbuster double-signing, and as we cast another eye around the latest rumours in the division we begin with the only team close to matching their net spend in the last few years: Manchester United.

The Red Devils have rationed enough toilet paper at Carrington to attempt to replace Rasmus Hojlund, and CaughtOffside report they’re interested in launching an audacious raid on Villa Park for Ollie Watkins, who has three years left on his contract. Last season the 29-year-old didn’t quite follow up on his outstanding 2023/24 Premier League where he scored 19 goals and assisted 15 in 37 games, but still hit double-figures in the league and netted in the Champions League.

Villa successfully warded off interest from Arsenal in January for their star striker but now facing potential PSR trouble, they could reportedly be prepared to part with Watkins for £60m. Watkins scored more than Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined in 2023/24 and Ruben Amorim desperately needs a certified finisher to replicate Viktor Gyokeres’ impact leading the line at Sporting.

With Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko both linked to Arsenal, Liam Delap and Jonathan David having signed for other clubs, and Bryan Mbeumo potentially out of reach, Watkins would be a godsend for Amorim as he struggles to ignite the faltering giants of English football.

The 3AM Verdict: Villa were widely believed to demand £80m for Watkins in winter but they need to raise serious funds this summer and the striker will turn thirty next campaign. The Red Devils are one of the few clubs who could tempt a player to leave a Premier League rival and give up European football for at least a season but even so, this would be a hammer blow for Aston Villa supporters.

Wolves prepare bid for 20-year-old Flamengo talent

Journalist Julio Miguel Neto expects Wolverhampton Wanderers to launch a bid for forward Wallace Yan following a hugely impressive Club World Cup for the 20-year-old.

Yan only played 35 minutes at the tournament but still found the time to score twice, including the final nail in Chelsea’s coffin during the group stage, and Flamengo appear keen to cash in on a player who’s made just a handful of senior appearances in his nascent career. Yan reportedly has a release clause of €50m (£43m) and is contracted to the Rio de Janeiro club until 2027 but Neto believes Flamengo will begin negotiations at €15m (£13m) and are unlikely to “play hardball” if the bidding reaches €18m (£15.5m)

Wolves have spent less than half of the almost-£100m windfall they received from sending Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester and can afford to make a healthy loss this summer while still complying with PSR, so it could be a gamble they can afford to make.

The 3AM Verdict: Despite his breakout summer stateside, Yan could need to spend time on loan before he’s ready to take on the Premier League and £43m would be a huge amount for someone so untested. However, he could turn out to be a bargain if Wolves can negotiate Flamengo down closer to that that £13m floor.

Tottenham £10m away from first signing of the summer

Yesterday we brought you the news that Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid of £50m plus £5m in add-ons rejected for Mohammed Kudus, but they could be closer than it seems in their pursuit of the Ghanaian. According to TBR Football, West Ham will accept £65m for the attacker who scored eight and assisted nine in the 2023/24 Premier League season, despite the £84m release clause in his contract.

Tottenham’s only business this summer so far - at least in the player department - has been making Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso’s loan moves to north London permanent but having secured the huge financial boost of Champions League football next season, £65m seems eminently affordable for Daniel Levy.

Spurs’ attacking quartet in the Europa League featured Brennan Johnson, Pape Matar Sarr, Richarlison and Dominic Solanke so there’s no question improvements are needed, and Kudus’ versatility and Premier League pedigree aged 24 would fit the bill perfectly.

The 3AM Verdict: We suspect that things are going more smoothly behind the scenes” was our view 24 hours ago after that initial bid was rejected, and we feel even more confident of that after this latest update. The stars seem to be aligning for Kudus to become Tottenham’s most expensive signing ever.

Several huge deals are currently brewing nicely right across the Premier League, and we’re here with our latest round-up of all the biggest new transfer rumours to help you keep up with all the negotiations – starting, today, with Arsenal.

GiveMeSport build on a report from L’Equipe in claiming that Arsenal have “discussed” a potential move for AS Monaco right winger Maghnes Akliouche, and have held talks with the player’s agent.

Any deal for Akliouche would likely be at the expense of a bid for Eberechi Eze, widely reported as being the subject of interest from the Gunners. There won’t be much difference in price, though, with Monaco said to be holding out for €70m (£60m) for a players still tied to a long-term contract.

Making life a little easier is the fact that the 23-year-old Akliouche, who was a member of France’s Olympic squad in 2024, shares an agent with Viktor Gyökeres. The ongoing negotiations for the Swedish striker could help to smooth the path to a deal for the Monaco man as well.

The 3AM Verdict: Shared agents probably helps transfers along somewhat, but it doesn’t mean that Arsenal will pay over the odds. The reporting also mentions Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman as a cheaper alternative, a name we’ve seen come up a few times lately, and perhaps one we think is more likely than Akliouche. We suspect that Rodrygo and Eberechi Eze are the real targets for now and suspect that the Monaco man’s name is just being thrown in through inference. Unlikely, in our view.

Spurs face uphill struggle to seal Mohammed Kudus deal

Over to Football Insider now, who allege that they have some updates on Tottenham Hotspur’s efforts to sign West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus – and it doesn’t sound like it’s quite all going to plan.

A first bid of £50m plus an extra £5m in add-ons has supposedly been “rejected”, according to Football Insider’s sources, with West Ham insistent that it fell short of their valuation. The report doesn’t say suggest precisely what the asking price is, only stating that it’s below £80m, which is suitably vague.

West Ham are “reluctantly prepared” to let Kudus leave, which is good news for Spurs, but the bad news doesn’t stop at the transfer fee – “a number of Premier League teams” are said to be keen on the Ghana international, with Newcastle United and Chelsea both suggested as potential destinations.

The 3AM Verdict: We’ve heard nothing to make us believe that any other Premier League teams are serious about a move for Kudus right now, although there is interest from Saudi Arabia which could prove to be a disrupting factor. If Spurs did bid £55m, they also did so knowing fine well it wouldn’t be accepted. We suspect that things are going more smoothly behind the scenes than this article suggests.

Aston Villa & Bournemouth enter battle for in-demand defender

We’ll wrap things up today with a story from Sport Witness, who comment on reports which suggest that Aston Villa and Bournemouth have become the latest clubs to throw their hat into the ring for Argentine defender Kevin Lomónaco, who plays in his homeland for Independiente.

Right now, just about half of the teams in Europe have been connected with him at some point or another (ranging from West Ham to Barcelona) but both Villa and the Cherries have joined the battle “in the last few hours”, an unusually tightly-timed claim for so early in the window.

We do at least know how much Lomónaco, who was previously suspended and fined for his role in a spot fixing scandal in Brazil, will cost – his release clause is €17m (£14.7m) and Independiente expect it to be paid in full.

The 3AM Verdict: Lomónaco’s name has been thrown around all over the place of late, and this article brings Aston Villa and Bournemouth into the frame in the context of a bid from Real Oviedo. It’s clear that there’s a lot of tentative interest, but figuring out where he’ll actually go – and whether the report about Villa or Bournemouth’s interest is accurate or not – is impossible right now. There are a lot of sharks circling, but we’re waiting for one of them to bite.

The rumour mill is showing no signs of slowing down, so to help you keep pace with all the latest happenings, we’re back with our latest round-up of the biggest new Premier League transfer rumours – starting with a story for Manchester United fans.

French football news website Foot Mercato report that Ruben Amorim’s side are “in the running” to sign PSG midfielder Fabián Ruiz this summer, with the Spaniard said to be “attracting interest” from several sides including Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr.

PSG aren’t necessarily keen on selling the Spain international, who is said to be “highly regarded” by manager Luis Enrique, but with no sign of an extension to a contract which expires in two years, there is a chance that he could be sold while he still holds a substantial market value, especially with João Neves and Warren Zaïre-Emery both in the squad already.

There’s no word on a potential asking price for the 29-year-old, who provided 11 assists last season, but it’s suggested that any team that makes a move will have to make a “highly convincing” offer for a player who PSG are happy to keep around to ensure continuity. Reports elsewhere have previously suggested a bid north of £36m could be enough to seal the deal.

The 3AM Verdict: There’s very little detail in this story and certainly no talk of negotiations, so we suspect any interest is ephemeral at best at this stage. In short, not a transfer we think is especially likely to happen unless PSG establish that the player himself wants to depart rather than signing an extension. There’s no hint of that being the case in this article, so we wouldn’t advise United fans to get their hopes up.

Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein offer updates on Spurs moves

Two stories at once here for Tottenham Hotspur fans which also include some interesting updates for supporters of cross-capital rivals Arsenal, Crystal Palace and West Ham United – and which concern the moves Spurs might make as they look for a new left winger.

Fabrizio Romano starts us off by reporting that talks over personal terms “are underway” between Spurs and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, who is said to be “open” to joining the Europa League champions and becoming the first West Ham player to make that particular move since Scott Parker 14 years ago. There are, apparently, “two more clubs involved in the race”, but Romano doesn’t specify who they are or how much money will have to change hands.

That dovetails neatly with an update from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who claims that Spurs are in fact “not working” on a deal for Eberechi Eze despite reports of their interest last week. Arsenal, however, are interested but have yet to start negotiations, seemingly because they feel the asking price is too steep.

The 3AM Verdict: Prior reporting has hinted that both Eze and Kudus would cost any buying club up to £70m, and given the similar price points we are a little surprised to see that Spurs aren’t interested in Eze given everything we read last week. Ornstein is seldom too far wrong, however, so it look as though Spurs will indeed move for Kudus if they can, while there’s an open door for Arsenal to sign Eze if they choose to.

RB Leipzig in for £50m Liverpool star Harvey Elliott

We’ll leave the last word of this evening’s transfer rumour round-up to The Athletic, as well, as their latest ‘deal sheets’ also provide some insight into the future of some of Liverpool’s young stars – a future that doesn’t look likely to be at Anfield.

With Jarell Quansah already signing for Bayer Leverkusen, he could be followed to Germany by fellow European Under-21 champion Harvey Elliott, who is apparently a target for RB Leipzig. Elliott, who won the Player of the Tournament award in Slovakia, is available for £50m, or “in excess of” £40m if the buying club includes a buy-back clause.

It “is not clear” whether Leipzig want to sign Elliott permanently or would rather negotiate a loan deal, but given that Elliott doesn’t seem close to signing an extension on a contract which has just two years left to run, Liverpool will surely want to sell him. Tyler Morton, another England Under-21 star who spent last season on loan at Leipzig, could leave as well, but no word on where he might go.

The 3AM Verdict: We’re still a bit surprised that Arne Slot couldn’t find space for a player as talented as Elliott in his side, in truth, and wonder if we’re looking at a transfer which could come back to bite the Reds somewhere down the line. Still, it seems increasingly probable that the former Fulham man will indeed move on very soon, with Morton to follow.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank will be looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad this summer. He has been picked as their replacement for Ange Postecoglou after his impressive spell in charge at Brentford. The Dane will now get the chance to test himself at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The London outfit finished down in 17th place in the Premier League last season. Despite winning the Europa League, their hierarchy made the bold decision to part ways with Postecoglou. It is a new era for them now and Frank will be looking to bring in some new signings.

Tottenham Hotspur target Southampton star Tyler Dibling

Tottenham Hotspur are admirers of Southampton star Tyler Dibling, according to Football Insider. He is also said to be wanted by Crystal Palace and Newcastle United in this window. The latter have already missed out on both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro who opted to join Chelsea instead, and it appears another one of their key targets in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo will be going elsewhere as well. On top of the that, the club have so far been thwarted in their attempts to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

Eddie Howe’s side are in the Champions League again but are finding it tough to attract the players they want to. If Spurs were to win the pursuit for Dibling, it would be another blow for the North East club. However, their loss would very much be Frank’s gain. Dibling, 19, has a promising future in the game and would be a great long-term option. He had spells in the academies of the likes of Exeter City and Chelsea. He then settled with the Saints and hasn’t looked back since.

He was a regular at various different youth levels before breaking into the first-team picture under the guidance of their former manager Russell Martin, who is now at Rangers. The England youth international has become one of their most valuable assets but they face a battle to retain his services amid attention from elsewhere. He has made 43 appearances in all competitions to date and has scored three goals.

Spurs could see him as someone to add more quality to their attacking department. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch. In addition, he could offer them something different to what they already have at their disposal.

Tottenham Hotspur swap deal involving Tyrese Hall option

Southampton will want to do all they can to keep hold of Dibling. There is an air of inevitability that he will be moving on in the near future though. He is too good to be playing in the Championship and needs to get back to the top flight as soon as he can.

As per the Express, the Saints are interested in Spurs prospect Tyrese Hall. His chances of immediate game time with his current club are slim. Therefore, they should use him as part of a swap deal plus cash to try and snap up Dibling ahead of the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Getting a player in return would be a boost for Southampton, especially if it is someone they are keen on landing anyway. Hall, 19, has risen up through the academy ranks at Hotspur Way and is a bright talent. There is just too much competition for a place in the senior team though.

Leaving for a fresh start in the second tier would be beneficial for him. It would give him a chance to get some regular minutes under his belt. He would benefit greatly from getting opportunities as opposed to having to wait around for his chance.

Southampton struggled last term and were relegated after finishing in the bottom three with Leicester City and Ipswich Town. They will be aiming for an immediate promotion and have turned to Will Still as their new head coach. The Englishman has spent the past few years in France with Stade de Reims and Lens and will now want to show what he can do in his own country.

Still will have his work cut out with the Saints as they look to be a force to be reckoned with. They must ensure that they get their recruitment right before the new campaign begins. If Dibling left for Spurs, getting Hall in return wouldn’t be a bad bit of business at all.

Spurs have been predicted to sign Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon for £50million. Frank will be aware of his fellow countryman and he has played 19 games for Denmark so far. If he joined, he would give the London outfit more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

Hjulmand, 25, started his career with spells at FC Copenhagen, Admira Wacker and Lecce before moving to Portugal. He has since become one of Sporting’s most valuable assets and they could face a battle to keep hold of him. He has made 96 appearances for them in all competitions and has scored seven goals.

Spurs have been backed to snap up attacking midfielder Mikel Damsgaard from Brentford in a deal worth £30million. Frank knows the player well and could look to reunite with him, as well as other Bees talents like Bryan Mbeumo if possible. Damsgaard has become an important player at the Brentford Community Stadium.

It has taken him a couple of years to get used to English football but he is turning into a useful option now. He is a decent age, has potential to develop in the future and has experience of the league now. The Nordsjælland academy graduate spent two years in Italy at Sampdoria before rocking up in England.

Spurs are being tipped to land striker Arnaud Kalimuendo for a cut-price £20million deal from Rennes. The 23-year-old would give them another option to pick from up top. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Frank look to strengthen that particular area over the next couple of months.

Kalimuendo, 23, moved to Roazhon Park back in 2022 and has scored 40 goals in 112 matches, 18 of which came in the last campaign. Prior to his transfer, he was on the books at PSG. The new European champions loaned him out to Lens twice to get some experience under his belt.

Who could leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

Richarlison is facing an uncertain future at Spurs and AI believes he could depart for a new challenge elsewhere. If he did, it would probably suit all parties involved. It would also free up money to pave the way for reinforcements like Hjulmand, Damsgaard and Kalimuendo.

The Brazilian is an unpredictable operator who can produce moments of quality. However, he endured a tough past term and struggled on the goal scoring front. He is too inconsistent to depend upon and could depart for a change of scene. Alejo Veliz was brought in as one for the future but things haven’t gone to plan for him at Spurs so far. For that reason, AI reckons he may head out the exit door. At the age of 21, he can still have a bright future in the game but it hasn’t worked out for him in England.

The Argentinian youngster caught the eye in South America at Rosario Central before his move over to Europe. He has since featured on 10 occasions for his current club and has scored two goals. The forward has been loaned out to Seville and Espanyol over recent times but has hardly set the world alight in La Liga, scoring only once in 21 league games for the latter.

Cristian Romero rocked up at Spurs back in 2021 on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent. When fit, he is a solid defender and strengthens their options at the back. He has had his injury issues though and AI has predicted a possible move away for him in the near future, which would raise a few eyebrows. Frank would hope to get a decent fee for him if he did go.

Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal have expressed a strong interest in signing Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Sky Sports News reports that Arsenal are exploring the conditions of a potential deal with the Eagles but face strong competition from a series of other Champions League clubs including Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal have previously been linked with Real Madrid winger Rodrygo and Athletic Bilbao playmaker Nico Williams as they look to enhance the left hand side of their attack before the start of the 2025/26 season.

Eze, who has been capped 11-times for England, has just enjoyed a career best season with Crystal Palace which saw him score 14 times and produced 11 assists in 43 appearances for the Selhurst Park club. The 26-year-old notably scored the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City to help the club achieve their first ever major honour while he also played a decisive goal throughout the team’s road to the final with goals against Aston Villa and Fulham in the semi-final and quarter-final respectively.

How much would Eberechi Eze cost this summer?

Crystal Palace hero Eberechi Eze is reported to have a release clause of around £60m which could rise to around £68m based on performance-related criteria and add-ons. However, the Eagles are desperate to keep Eze on board as they gear up for their first ever European campaign after securing a place in the Europa League.

Oliver Glasner has so far enjoyed a hugely productive first 18-months at Palace and has proven at Eintract Frankfurt that he’s capable of taking a team all the way to success in a European competition.

The 3AM Verdict: While Arsenal’s main objective should be signing a centre forward, it is clear to see that they also need an upgrade on the left side of their attack to boost their chances of a league title.

Eze outperformed both Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in terms of goal contributions last season despite playing for a team competing in the middle of the table as opposed to one pushing for a title.

The 26-year-old’s versatility also means he can thrive as a central attacking midfielder which will enable Arsenal to play a different way on occasion and open doors against teams setting up with a low block.

Ultimately, Eze’s underlying stats suggest he’d be a perfect fit for the Gunners, he has the sixth most shot creating actions in the league (135) much higher than other Arsenal players with perhaps the exception of Bukayo Saka (117) who missed large chunks of the season through injury.

Newcastle United plot new offer for Brazil international

Earlier this week, it was reported that Newcastle United had an offer in the region of £50m turned down by Brighton for Brazilian forward Joao Pedro.

Pedro is a player that Newcastle have been interested in for the best part of three years, with the Magpies also making a move for the forward during his time at Watford before eventually turning their attention to Alexander Isak.

Now after securing Champions League football, Newcastle are in the market for a deputy to Isak after allowing Callum Wilson to leave on a free transfer. The Magpies are understood to be huge fans of Pedro and are willing to try and reach a compromise transfer fee agreement with Brighton, according to talkSPORT.

It’s expected £60m could be sufficient to get a deal over the line although it’s believed the club are also exploring alternative options including Antony Elanga of Nottingham Forest.

The 3AM verdict: Newcastle United need to bolster their squad depth if they are to avoid a repeat of the 2023/24 season which saw the Magpies drop off due to an avalanche of injuries and the added fatigue of European football.

Squad depth is paramount if Newcastle are to cement their place as a European force and Pedro could prove a key player in helping them achieve that goal.

The 23-year-old is approaching his prime years, is versatile enough to play as a forward, right winger and central attacking midfielder, enabling tactical flexibility and has proven that he can score and create goals throughout his time at the Amex.

It’s a deal that definitely makes sense from a Newcastle perspective although a price tag of £60m, which would be the second most expensive in the club’s history does seem steep.

Arsenal have the chance to add some more quality to their squad this summer. Mikel Arteta will be eager to close the gap on Liverpool ahead of next season. Manchester City are also likely to come back stronger so the Gunners need to ensure that they are ready.

The London club have fallen short in the title race over the past couple of years. They aren’t a million miles away though and must find more consistency in the next campaign. Boosting their ranks with some reinforcements over the next couple of months would certainly strengthen their chances of success.

Arsenal should beat Tottenham Hotspur to Eberechi Eze deal

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are interested in a move for £68million-rated Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace along with Tottenham Hotspur. They should go all out to try and beat their rivals to land the playmaker. He would be ideal for Arteta and would suit their style of play. The Eagles will face a major battle to keep hold of him in this window amid attention from elsewhere. He scored the winner for Oliver Glasner’s side in the FA Cup final against Manchester City last month at Wembley. However, his future is up in the air.

Eze, 26, would be perfect for Arsenal ahead of next term. He is still relatively young, has potential to get better down the line and would give them something different going forward. The England international, who has 11 caps to his name, must play in the Champions League now to show what he can do.

The London-born man had spells as a youngster with the Gunners, Fulham, Reading and Millwall. He finally settled at QPR and rose up through their ranks before getting experience out on loan from the Hoops at Wycombe Wanderers in the Football League. Upon his return to the R’s, he became a key first-team player and went on to score 20 goals in 112 games.

His emergence in the Championship resulted in Crystal Palace taking a gamble on him in 2020. He has since become one of the Eagles’ most prized assets over the last five years. The attacking midfielder has found the net on 39 occasions in 166 matches altogether.

What do Arsenal need amid Eberechi Eze interest?

Arsenal need players to excite their fans and Eze is someone who is capable of getting supporters off their seats. He would be able to play in behind the striker and create chances for his teammates. Eze has proved that he can perform at the top level over recent times at Crystal Palace.

The Gunners’ main priority needs to be bringing in a new central forward. This has been an area of concern for a while now and has to be addressed. They risk falling behind the likes of Liverpool and City if they don’t get someone in soon. Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus last term meant that they had to play Mikel Merino up top and out of position. They didn’t get anyone in during January and were left short of options. Arsenal can’t afford to let that happen again.

As for Spurs, they are heading into a new era under the guidance of Thomas Frank and are in the hunt for some new faces, including Eze. However, they will need to bat away competition from their rivals to get him. Frank has caught the eye at Brentford over recent years and is ready to test himself at a bigger club now.

The north London outfit massively under-performed last season and finished 17th, hence why Ange Postecoglou was sacked. Boosting their defensive department will be high up on their to-do list, as well as getting in some more attacking threat. Whatever happens, it won’t be a quiet window for either Spurs or Arsenal.

It’s time for our daily morning round-up of the biggest and juiciest new Premier League transfer rumours – and we start off with a story which could see a miniature North London Derby erupting in the transfer market over a rival club’s captain.

According to The Evening Standard, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a potential move for Brentford skipper Christian Nørgaard, despite the fact that he only signed a new two-year contract in March.

New Spurs boss Thomas Frank is “keen” on a reunion with his old captain, but “will face competition” from the Gunners if Thomas Partey doesn’t sign a new deal at the Emirates. Talks over such a deal have stalled, it’s said, making it likely that Arsenal will be on the lookout for a replacement.

Spurs, meanwhile, are expected to allow Yves Bissouma to leave and may look at Danish midfielder Nørgaard instead, who is said to be one of the players Frank trusts the most. No financial details are mentioned, but the Bees would no doubt look to get top dollar for a key player.

Elsewhere, GiveMeSport claim that Spurs are at the front of the queue to sign free agent full-back Kyle Walker-Peters, who is said to be keen to return to his former club amid interest from several Premier League sides.

The 3AM Verdict: Instinctively, it seems more likely that Nørgaard would prefer a move to Spurs both to reunite with his former coach and to be in a better position to establish himself as a first-team regular, but the chance to win the title at Arsenal – let’s be fair, a more imminent prospect in that half of North London as it stands – could sway him. Without financial details, it’s hard to determine the likelihood of a move, unfortunately.

Leeds United & Burnley target Newcastle stalwart

Over to TeamTalk now – they claim that with Newcastle United on the verge of completing a £30m deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, current number one Nick Pope will be moved on, with the Clarets one of two contenders for his signature.

It’s said that sources claim that a deal for Pope is “very much possible” with the Turf Moor outfit “intrigued” about the opportunity to bring their former star home. They will face some competition, however, with Leeds United also interested as they work to replace the error-prone Illan Meslier.

Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are said to be interested in the French stopper but won’t meet the asking price, which could hold a move for Pope up. Even if that deal gets done soon, however, Burnley seem to have the edge, and Pope’s name “has come up in conversations” being held over Trafford’s future.

To rub salt in Leeds’ wounds, a quite separate report from Sport Witness suggests that they may well lose out on midfield target Habib Diarra, too, with Atlético Madrid set to make a bid for the €25m-rated Strasbourg and Senegal man.

The 3AM Verdict: The link between Pope and Leeds isn’t new, but if Burnley have indeed set their sights on a reunion with the 33-year-old Pope, then the Whites will have a tough time making their pitch given that Pope is already a firm favourite in the claret and blue half of East Lancashire. We’d be surprised if Leeds could win that race without massively overpaying. Leeds were also always fighting an uphill battle to get Diarra, who has many admirers.

Newcastle United’s attempted Nottingham Forest raid rebuffed

We’ll stay with the Magpies for the final rumour of our quickfire round-up this morning – if The Daily Mail have their facts straight (and they sometimes do on the back pages, at least) then Nottingham Forest have just rejected another bid from Newcastle for Anthony Elanga.

Newcastle tried to sign the Swedish winger at the end of last summer’s transfer window and have long been linked with a second attempt, which supposedly came in the form of an improved £45m offer – however, it was “swifty rebuffed.”

It’s claimed that it would take a bid “north of £50m” to persuade Forest to part with the 23-year-old forward, and Eddie Howe’s team are “weighing up” whether to return with a fresh offer.

The 3AM Verdict: £50m is a number that’s been floated by a number of media outlets and it seems to be proving accurate, based on this story. The question is whether Newcastle are willing to stump up or explore alternatives, such as Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo. Expect the answer to that one in the near future.

In spite of the relative ease with which David Moyes managed to steer Everton away from the relegation battle last season, there’s little doubt that the Toffees need to strengthen in quite a few areas before they move into their shiny new stadium.

The new ownership seems keen to invest and Everton have been linked with a bewilderingly wide range of players, but given that this is a club who have fallen afoul of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules before, there is a limit to just how much they will be able to spend.

The excesses and errors of the Moshiri years remain a factor in the rolling three-year accounting period and the club posted a pre-tax loss of £53m for 2023/24, their seventh successive financial deficit. As such, the Friedkin Group will be forced to temper their ambitions to some degree – but fresh links with one of Europe’s most versatile players may help them kill a few different birds with a single stone.

Timothy Weah could be the answer to Everton’s transfer headache

On Friday, Sport Witness reported on stories from France which suggest that both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are in contact with Juventus to find out whether they can strike a deal for United States international Timothy Weah.

With Weah currently in America as he juggles deeply awkward meetings with Donald Trump and playing in the Club World Cup, it’s likely that we’re a few weeks away from any substantive negotiations taking place – but if we do get that far, then Weah may be just what Everton need to cover the needs of the squad without breaking the bank.

Admittedly, we don’t know how much Juventus might demand in order to sell Weah. Transfermarkt estimate his value at €17m (£14.5m), their valuations are hardly entirely reliable and with three years remaining on his current contract, that’s probably an understatement of what he would cost.

Although not necessarily a critical player for the Old Lady – only half of his 60 league appearances since moving to Serie A have been starts – his enormous versatility means that he’s important to their squad rotation. In short, while Juventus would surely consider a sale at the right price, he wouldn’t necessarily be all that cheap.

But that same versatility could make him a hugely cost-effective signing. Weah started his career as a right winger who occasionally played centre-forward but now operates either as a wing-back or winger on either side, operating on both sides of defence, midfield and as a striker on one occasion for Juventus this season alone.

Everton are already contemplating adding a free agent right-back in the form of Kyle Walker (with other options on the table) but there are warning signs that Walker’s career is in sharp decline. The 25-year-old Weah, by comparison, has years left in the tank and could not only fill the void at right-back but also offer an option on the wings and up front, both areas which also need strengthening.

Everton’s squad is, frankly, a little thin in several positions, and adding a player who could cover several areas at once seems like a pretty sensible suggestion. In that regard, at least, their need is surely more dire than that of Spurs, who need some help out wide but have good options at right-back already.

Why Weah isn’t the perfect solution to David Moyes’ problems

Of course, there’s a reason that Weah seems likely to be available this summer – for all his versatility, he has become something of a jack of all trades, and arguably master of none.

While he’s rock solid technically, as a winger he does lack the kind of dynamism that helps him get into dangerous positions, isn’t at his best taking defenders on one-on-one (he succeeds less than 40% of the times that he takes an opponent on), and isn’t a major source of goals. His five strikes in Serie A this season was a career high, and he hadn’t scored a league goal for Juventus or Lille for two years before scoring against Como on the opening day of the 2024/25 season.

His defensive work is generally strong but Weah doesn’t shine in any particular area – he reads the game well, his positioning is decent, and he’s solid in the tackle without offering any truly exceptional qualities.

Still, this is a player good enough to play for Juventus on a relatively regular basis and to earn 44 international caps by the time that he’s 25. He’s physically impressive and quick enough to give opposing defenders headaches while avoiding being outpaced by wingers running at him down the flanks. He certainly seems to be in slight better shape than Walker may be for the next couple of years.

Weah wouldn’t necessarily be a transformative signing for Everton (or Spurs, for that matter) but he offers plenty of quality and a degree of flexibility that few players can match. For a side about to embark on a rebuild restricted by financial circumstances, that sounds like a sensible deal to get done.
