Nottingham Forest have turned their attention to Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong after failing in their efforts to land Tottenham Hotspur duo Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr, TEAMtalk understands.

Forest made an approach for Bergvall earlier in the window, but Spurs rejected their bid for the Sweden international.

Sarr has also been under consideration, although the Senegal international is assessing his options with a host of clubs showing interest.

Galatasaray and Besiktas have both been monitoring Sarr, while Crystal Palace and Brentford are also understood to have looked at the Tottenham midfielder. Forest remain among the clubs keen.

With their pursuit of the Spurs pair proving difficult, Forest have now switched their focus to Armstrong and TEAMtalk understands progress is being made.

The 19-year-old has made huge strides this summer and has emerged as an increasingly important player for Everton.

Indeed, Armstrong started Everton’s opening game of the season – a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace – alongside new signing Hayden Hackney.

Forest have now made an offer worth £40million plus add-ons, with Everton discussing the proposal.

That represents a significant valuation of a player who has only recently established himself in Everton’s first-team plans.

However, Forest see Armstrong as a player with enormous potential and believe he could follow a similar path to Elliot Anderson, who made the move from Newcastle United to the City Ground in similar circumstances.

Anderson arrived as a young player with huge potential but relatively limited Premier League experience and has since developed into an important part of Forest’s side.

Crucially, TEAMtalk understands Armstrong is open to the move, with Oliver Glasner a big admirer of the teenager.

Glasner believes Armstrong could make a similar impact at Forest and sees his technical ability, energy and versatility as a strong fit for his midfield.

Forest are now pushing to make the deal happen, with Everton considering their position after receiving the substantial offer.

Tottenham most certainly appeased the number crunchers with eyes for aesthetics by signing Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.

While the Premier League has shown early signs this season of moving beyond Pep Guardiola's demand for control, the two defenders were regarded as major coups for Roberto De Zerbi's project, primarily because of what they could provide in possession.

Never before have line-breaking passes been discussed so much. That was the metric we became obsessed with, keen to only see the good in those who arrive in N17. However, perhaps we (and the recruitment team) ought to have done a bit more digging. Both players have carved out good Premier League careers, but they aren't without flaws.

And we learned that the hard way on the opening weekend of the season at Brentford.

Why Tottenham cannot afford to let Kevin Danso leave now

No one in this team can head the ball, and that's why Spurs cannot lose Kevin Danso before the deadline. The Austrian international has attracted interest from Sunderland, with the club already turning down a loan proposal, according to BBC Sport.

Danso, who sits behind Van Hecke in the depth chart, is open to leaving Spurs this summer.

However, De Zerbi must swiftly learn that Danso is an imperative figure in his defense, even if he isn't first-choice. While Van Hecke and Senesi combined to win 50% and 44% of their aerial duels last weekend against a robust and physical Brentford side, the Italian had one of the best headerers of the ball sitting on the bench.

Danso led the club with 3.8 aerial duels won per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.

While there's good reason to be excited about the moves Spurs have made this summer, there's no overlooking the fact that De Zerbi has ditched the physicality at his disposal in favour of superior technicians. We sorely required better footballers in the squad, but we will be liable to Brentford-like drubbings if the Italian omits particular personnel.

Micky van de Ven may not be great in the air, but his physicality is very much-needed at the back. Destiny Udogie and Sandro Tonali are imposing, with the latter particularly superb in recovery, while Conor Gallagher has the capacity to run all day.

The Premier League may yet evolve tactically with Pep Guardiola no longer facilitating groupthink, but we only need to look a few miles down the road to see the level of physicality that's required to be successful in this division. Mikel Arteta has a bunch of behemoths at his disposal, allowing Arsenal to dominate in both boxes and everywhere in between.

While Danso is hardly spectacular and would be replaceable if Spurs had the time, it's important that we keep him, given the make-up of De Zerbi's squad. The Lilywhites must retain at least a modicum of brute force to survive the rigours of the English top flight.

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Everton attacker Iliman Ndiaye, and they will face competition from Manchester City.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Tottenham are looking to add more quality to their attack and are keeping tabs on the Senegal international. They are also monitoring players like Folarin Balogun from Monaco.

Iliman Ndiaye could be an exciting Tottenham addition

Ndiaye has done well since joining Everton, and he could prove to be an interesting acquisition for Tottenham. The North London club has already signed Savio from Manchester City, and they are hoping to bring in another wide player before the transfer window closes.

It remains to be seen whether Everton is prepared to sanction the attacker’s departure. He is a key player for them, and they could struggle to replace him this late in the window.

Meanwhile, the opportunity to play for Tottenham could be interesting for the attacker. It would be a major step up in his career. Tottenham have an ambitious project and a quality manager. They could be pushing for trophies this season, and Ndiaye might want to be a part of that.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered an immediate setback right when the 2026/27 Premier League season opened, getting dismantled by London rivals Brentford 3-0 on the road. Slowly but surely, Spurs are going to get back on track under Roberto De Zerbi with a new look squad as the incoming forward transfers get settled and other key players return from injury - or to their true full fitness.

Spurs already bounced back on Wednesday night in the League Cup, defeating Charlton Athletic 5-1. And after watching Conor Gallagher, Sandro Tonali, and Lucas Bergvall combine for a disaster class for the ages against a much hungrier Brentford side, Spurs took out Tonali and Gallagher and gave the starts to Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur, who were both tremendous off the bench.

While Bergvall failed to truly impress and bounce back after the worst showing of them all against Brentford, he was not as bad, while Fernandes and Bentancur replicated their success off the bench against Brentford by dominating Charlton from the starting lineup.

Roberto De Zerbi really has no other choice for Tottenham now

Tottenham Hotspur can already tell what they should have figured out last season, and that is the fact that Conor Gallagher is nowhere near good enough for the XI. And with James Maddison out for a few weeks with a new injury after hurting his shoulder against Brentford, Spurs need to find a new No. 10.

Based on what Spurs have seen, the best midfield trio with Xavi Simons and Maddres out is coming into place. New combined 185 million pound signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are obviously the bed rocks of the midfield, but Rodrigo Bentancur, after shining against Brentford and Charlton, has reminded fans that his improved performances under Roberto De Zerbi last season were no fluke.

The former Juventus man has now played himself into the conversation with Tonali and Fernandes as part of the best Tottenham midfield trio, and De Zerbi is quickly realizing that if he wants to give his team the best chance of winning, he has to play this trio in any combination right now.

Maybe Fernandes plays as a 10 for Maddison and Gallagher or maybe he, Bentancur, and Tonali all play in a flatter 4-3-3 formation without a double pivot and a central attacking midfielder. But no matter what De Zerbi picks tactically against Newcastle United and beyond, he has to use these three players. Tonali will rebound as he gets more fit, while Fernandes and Bentancur have been easily the two most competent midfielders of the early season for Spurs.

Liverpool are the record ten-times League Cup winners but, if the Reds are going to reach Wembley next March, they will have to overcome a challenging first hurdle.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Reds cannot face another side competing in the Champions League or Europa League at this juncture of the Carabao Cup. Thus, landing Tottenham Hotspur was one of the tougher ties Andoni Iraola's side could have got, albeit at least it is at Anfield.

The Carabao Cup is spread across two different mid-weeks to avoid clashing with the exclusive weeks UEFA have implemented for the Champions League and Europa League. Due to their participation in Europe's top-tier tournament, we already knew that Liverpool's clash with Spurs would be during the week commencing 14 September, with the date now set in stone.

A week earlier, Iraola's side will kick off their Champions League campaign. The Reds discovered on Thursday that, in the league phase, they will host Atlético Madrid, Porto, Villarreal and Lens, as well as travelling to take on Inter Milan, Club Brugge Fenerbahçe and LASK. The identity of their matchday one opponents, in just ten days time, will be confirmed on Saturday morning.

Tottenham supporters caught a glimpse of the future on Wednesday evening, as Roberto De Zerbi's side sailed into the Carabao Cup third round.

It was some light relief from the weekend's shellacking, when a hungry Brentford put Roberto De Zerbi's side to the sword. The Lilywhites looked beleagured and disjointed from the outset, and the Bees made them pay.

It may take a little while until we see the very best of Spurs in De Zerbi's first full season in charge, given the overhaul in personnel this summer. The boss insisted this group of players isn't yet a "team", but there were signs midweek of potentially prosperous partnerships developing across the pitch.

Here's the Spurs team De Zerbi could pick for Newcastle's visit on Saturday afternoon.

Defense: GK Antonín Kinsky - RB Pedro Porro - CB Jan Paul van Hecke - CB Micky van de Ven - LB Destiny Udogie

Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi can break lines at will, but that partnership was seized upon by the Bees and rumbled for the duration. I particularly like Senesi individually, but this defense desperately needs Micky van de Ven's physicality.

He featured midweek, and could be ready for his first start of the season. Van Hecke, despite a nightmare debut, is likely to retain his spot.

De Zerbi will also hope to wheel out World Cup winner Pedro Porro after the Spaniard came off the bench against Charlton. Porro is an incredibly important part of the Italian's framework in possession, and his partnership with one of Spurs' new attacking signings looks set to flourish.

On the opposite side, I'd be picking Destiny Udogie to match up against Anthony Elanga in transition. Andy Robertson was once a superb athlete, but the Scot isn't the force he once was.

Midfield: DM Rodrigo Bentancur - DM Sandro Tonali - AM Mateus Fernandes

De Zerbi highlighted the importance of Rodrigo Bentancur this week, and the Uruguayan has quickly leapfrogged Lucas Bergvall in the depth chart. The experienced head performed well in the cup and will partner former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali on Saturday.

The Italian was rested for the cup tie, and must be desperate to shine in front of a potentially hostile away end.

Mateus Fernandes can do it all, and we might require him to step up as a playmaker this weekend. We don't need Conor Gallagher for a fixture like this, and while Fernandes has a crucial role to play in ensuring Spurs escape pressure and access their three forwards, the Portuguese also boasts the guile and craft to pick locks in defenses higher up the pitch.

His long-term future resides in a deeper role. We just need him here for a few outings.

Forwards: LW Mathys Tel - ST Dominic Solanke - RW Sávio

Omar Marmoush is our latest recruit, signing for the club on Thursday. He's eligible to make his debut against the Magpies, whom he scored his only Premier League hat-trick against, and supporters will want to see as much of the new addition as possible.

However, Dominic Solanke is primed to lead the line after Richarlison struggled on Matchday 1. Solanke scored against Charlton and will have a big role to play for the Lilywhites if he can stay fit.

I'm expecting him to be flanked by Sávio after his electric debut, and Mathys Tel, who can't be forgotten about just because we've made a few splasges. Tel was one of the very few bright sparks at Brentford last week, and he'll be particularly keen to impress, given that Spurs are expected to add another forward to their ranks before the deadline.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke took full advantage of Richarlison's literal slips against Brentford on Matchday 1, scoring and turning in a strong all around performance as a key part of Spurs impressive 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Second Round of the League Cup.

A brief period of great form aside in early 2026, Solanke has been a pretty big disappointment for Tottenham thus far after being a record 65 million pound signing from Bournemouth in the summer 2024 transfer window, failing to come anywhere close to the career high 19 goals he scored for the Cherries in the 2023/24 season.

Solanke has always been a man of "What ifs?" throughout his entire career, including now at Tottenham. He was a great striker prospect for Liverpool and Chelsea as a youngster, supposed to be destined for great things. And then at Bournemouth, many thought he had finally bloomed late to reach his potential as a world class striker in English football, which is why Spurs spent so much to sign him not long after letting club legend Harry Kane spread his wings to German giants Bayern Munich.

Dominic Solanke still has believers

But the "ifs" are truly that tantalizing, and in glimpses, Solanke shows the sort of all around quality at the 9 that could, in theory, make him honestly one of Europe's best if he were to lock in and play at a high level for a full season and not just a few games here and there.

Roberto De Zerbi has made it no secret on multiple occasions that he is a big fan of Solanke's and wants to see the England international unleashed for an extended period. Now that may be tougher to do so as Solanke is not fully reliable with injuries and inconsistent play while minutes will be harder to come by with Omar Marmoush joining the team and Cody Gakpo still on the radar as a potential center forward option.

But again, Dominic Solanke, fulfilling his "ifs" and being all that he can be would actually stand out as good of an option at the striker position as any of those. As Solanke showed against Charlton, he is a player who can bring goals, physicality, chance creation, and a tactical reference point as an anchoring 9. Spurs still believe in Solanke rebounding and checking off the boxes, and maybe his performance against Charlton was a step in the right direction.

Everton are among the clubs interested in a 2026 summer deal for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, according to a journalist, who has also reported Nottingham Forest’s desire to sign the Senegal international midfielder.

On August 13, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, reported that Tottenham could offload Sarr before the summer transfer window closes.

We reported at the time that Aston Villa and Brentford are among the clubs that have shown interest in the 23-year-old Senegal international midfielder.

Sarr has been on the books of Tottenham since 2021 and is under contract at the north London club until the summer of 2030.

The Senegal international midfielder has not been particularly great for Tottenham in recent times.

On August 22, Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported that Tottenham have told Sarr that they want to sell him this summer.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly does not have any plans for the 23-year-old.

Tavolieri posted on X: “Tottenham Hotspur have informed Pape Matar Sarr that he is on the transfer market.

“An invitation to leave the club that did not go down well with the Senegalese midfielder, which is why he deleted all his posts related to the club from social media.

“Talks with Galatasaray are continuing. More to follow. #THFC”

Nottingham Forest in talks with Tottenham for Pape Matar Sarr

Tavolieri provided an update on Sarr’s situation on Friday.

The journalist wrote on X at 12:41am on August 28: “Nottingham Forest have made progress in the Pape Matar Sarr deal in recent hours.

“Talks with Tottenham have advanced and could lead to a paid loan with an option to buy.

“NFFC really appreciate the Senegalese midfielder and are trying to convince him of their project.”

Everton target Pape Matar Sarr

It has now emerged that Everton, too, are keen on a deal for Sarr before the summer transfer window closes next week.

The Daily Telegraph’s Football News Correspondent, Matt Law, who has over 682,000 followers on X, has reported that Everton have shown interest in Sarr, along with Forest and Besiktas.

Law posted on X at 3:33pm on August 28: “Nottingham Forest and Besiktas have both shown an interest in signing Pape Matar Sarr from Tottenham.

“Sarr has the green light to leave Spurs.”
