Tottenham aren't getting enough attacking quality

Sure, it was only a friendly, but on any pitch and in any setting, this brilliant free kick goal from Son Heung-min to make it 2-0 for South Korea was a special goal. It takes an amazing player to score like this with the high degree of technical difficulty and accuracy required, and Son is indeed a legend of this game.

Tottenham Hotspur really want to see some quality from their forwards this season. Savio is amazing in terms of his creativity and dribbling, and Mohammed Kudus showed pretty similar quality in his own first season of 2025/26, even under Thomas Frank.

But Dominic Solanke has been a disaster in front of goal since joining Spurs in 2024 from Bournemouth for a cool 65 million pounds, while Omar Marmoush has yet to show the magic in his boots that made him arguably the Bundesliga's best player before his big transfer to Manchester City.

Not since Son's peak at N17 have Spurs even had a competent attacking option in terms of goal scoring and all around play. Mohammed Kudus had a great first half of the 2025/26 season, but he only had seven goal contributions total. Spurs need someone like this who can score from anywhere at any time, and they just don't have anyone close.

Giorgio Scalvini has agreed to a new long-term contract with Atalanta, but the defender’s renewal is unlikely to end growing interest from several Premier League clubs.

The Italy international has been on the radar of several English sides, with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Chelsea among those understood to be monitoring his situation closely.

Giorgio Scalvini remains on Premier League radars

Scalvini has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in European football, despite suffering significant injury setbacks over the last couple of seasons.

The 22-year-old missed considerable time after an ACL injury in 2024 and later underwent shoulder surgery, but he returned to regular action and made around 30 appearances for Atalanta last season.

His performances have kept interest from abroad alive, with Newcastle particularly persistent in their pursuit of the Italian.

The Magpies have been following Scalvini for some time and reportedly made another attempt to bring him to England during the summer transfer window. Atalanta, however, were unwilling to sanction his departure.

Scalvini contract unlikely to end transfer speculation

Scalvini has now reached an agreement on fresh terms with Atalanta, with the new contract set to keep him at the club until 2031.

And through eight appearances for the Seagulls, Luka Vuskovic has a match rating of at least 7.5 in seven of those matches with only one below 6.0.

Tottenham have reason to second guess Roberto De Zerbi

Meanwhile, Jan Paul van Hecke has been strong in his own right, particularly in terms of his passing. As Roberto De Zerbi advertised, Van Hecke is the best passing center back in the Premier League right now, bar none. But his defending has been more inconsistent than Vuskovic's.

Van Hecke has a match rating above 7.5 in two of his six appearances for Tottenham compared to seven of eight for Vuskovic. He's also had a rating below 7.0 in three games, though he's never had a rating below 6.0, which Vuskovic did have one game like that.

While the jury is still out on whether or not De Zerbi was justified in signing Van Hecke since the Dutchman has played well overall after a shaky start, Vuskovic has been much more consistent and at a younger age. That's enough to keep making some Tottenham Hotspur fans wonder whether or not it was worth giving so much power to De Zerbi and listening to him, given he cost them one of the biggest young gems in world football.

Kinsky played out of his mind down the stretch of the season, becoming a symbol and a hero, resiliently battling his way back after that game against Atleti in which he was hung out to dry by Igor Tudor. Guglielmo Vicario was loaned to Juventus, and the rest was history.

Antonin Kinsky is not making the same plays

But while Antonin Kinsky has been far, far from the problem for Tottenham Hotspur in the winless start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, the Czech international has been surprisingly mediocre. He is not making the same plays he was at the end of the season nor adding value to Spurs in goal, and the drop off from his play has been noticeable.

Meanwhile, the top young goalkeeper Spurs could have signed, James Trafford, is putting in some insane performances for Leeds United ever since his 40 million pound transfer this summer. Trafford is leading the Premier League in save percentage with a clip of 87 percent, while Kinsky's rate is a subpar 60 percent, which gets him nowhere near the top level and is closer to the Vicario Zone.

Tottenham should not give up on Kinsky by any means, but his performances this season are a reminder that now that Spurs are transitioning from survival to actually wanting to compete at the highest level, they need to be ruthless about building around the best players in the league. Kinsky had a great patch of form and was an amazing upgrade on Vicario, but Vic was literally statistically the worst goalkeeper in the Premier League last season; it wasn't even close.

Spurs fans love Kinsky and will always love what he did last season, but football is about what you are doing to win right now. And right now, Kinsky is well behind the other big young keepers in the league like Trafford, and it is hard to argue against the point statistically that Spurs would be better with Trafford in goal. Kinsky is going to have to step up and show that great level from the end of the 2025/26 season again.

Lucas Bergvall started the 2026/27 Premier League season in disastrous fashion with a performance against Brentford that was so poor that it stands out as being as terrible as any individual display Spurs fans have seen over the past few seasons - and there have been quite a few horror shows in a Tottenham Hotspur uniform.

But recently, Bergvall has turned around his own displays and shown glimpses of the player that was touted as one of the best young midfielders in the world in his first season for Spurs back in 2024/25. Since then, though, Bergvall has underperformed and been the subject of a lot of drama, and his own questionable performances can't simply be chalked to Thomas Frank, though the former coach's poor management certainly was a drag on many key players.

After Spurs fans figured he would take his ball and go home after the club signed Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to big money transfers in the summer, Bergvall ended up staying despite significant interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest. And not only was Roberto De Zerbi able to get the Swedish international to stay, but Spurs signed the midfielder to a new contract.

Does Lucas Bergvall have a release clause?

Now, Lucas Bergvall has been asked if that new contract actually contains a release clause, which would give him an "out" to leave Tottenham Hotspur if he changes his mind. And while Bergvall did not confirm the release clause, he didn't deny it either.

Bergvall said to the Swedish media over the September international break, via The Spurs Watch, “Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say. Last year was tough, but I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club and I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal. There was a lot of speculation this summer, but I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything.”

It's never a good sign when a player gets a bit on the defensive but also speaks in vague terms, and if there really were no release clause, instead of biting back at the reporters, Bergvall would have denied it and calmly stated that he is fully COYS or otherwise committed to the club.

We did not see that from Bergvall here. Instead, we saw another emotional reaction from the young player, and while he denies that he tried to force anything, it's hard to imagine Spurs would have been actively shopping Bergvall to Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest out of their own volition. A release clause is an easy way for Bergvall to be able to go to, say, Barcelona or Real Madrid, though he'll have to improve his performances by a LOT in order to get any interest from those clubs again.

Tottenham Hotspur fans knew that selling Djed Spence to Serie A champions Inter Milan would be a move that they would quickly regret, but just five games into the 2026/27 Premier League season, the move looks like an even more difficult pill to swallow than fans would have expected.

While Spence had a pretty poor 2025/26 season for Spurs, so did most of the team. And after a brilliant World Cup for the third place England national team in which he showed his value on a global scale, Spurs sold Spence because he wanted to leave and because they were given an offer they could not refuse financially in the context of past deals for fullbacks.

So the real issue was Spurs not signing Spence's replacement. Tottenham currently have only one right back in Pedro Porro, and he is injured again for about a month, having struggled for fitness to start the season, which anyone could have predicted after his grueling summer at the World Cup. They also only have Destiny Udogie and Andy Robertson at left back now after selling Spence and loaning Souza. Udogie is always injured, while Robertson has genuinely looked finish at the Premier League level over the past two seasons, even in 2024/25 when Liverpool actually won the league.

Tottenham repeated their Morgan Gibbs-White mistake

Tottenham Hotspur briefly showed interest in the right footed Neco Williams, who mostly starts at left back for Nottingham Forest. But Spurs did not push too hard, perhaps scared off by Evangelos Marinakis after he bullied the weak minded Tottenham front office into backing out of the obvious Morgan Gibbs-White move last summer.

Missing out on the Williams transfer is already looking as bad as the failed Gibbs-White approach in 2025, because Williams is having an incredible start to the 2026/27 season for Forest as one of the best fullbacks in European football. He is shining on both flanks and would be a starter for Tottenham at either left or right back right now, especially given the injuries to main men Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.

Neco Williams is averaging 2.8 tackles, 1.8 fouls drawn, and 1.6 key passes per game for Nottingham Forest. He is winning possesion more than any Tottenham fullback, creating more chances, and progressing play better than all of them.

Signing Williams would have been preferable to Andy Robertson anyway, and signing him after selling Djed Spence was a no brainer. Now, Williams is balling out and making Spurs look like fools for not going harder for him.
