Description

Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as Ruben Amorim attempts to strengthen his attack ahead of the 2025/26 season.

It’s an uncertain time for a lot of people in football. The transfer window is open and every club will hope to improve their squad over the coming months.

Manchester United are no different, especially after a turbulent campaign. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and missed out on European football after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham.

The end of the season led to an announcement that saw three United players depart at the end of their contracts. They included Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and the retiring Jonny Evans.

Ruben Amorim has had a difficult first six months at Old Trafford, but he will be hoping for better results on the pitch next term, or else he will risk losing his job.

The next step for United this summer is adding a second new signing to the squad. Matheus Cunha became the first signing of the summer when he joined from Wolves.

Now, all eyes are on Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.

Manchester United must sign Bryan Mbeumo quickly

It’s early days in the transfer window and United still have plenty of time to get their business done.

More United News

To prepare for the new season in the best way possible, Ineos are trying to finalise their biggest deals before the squad reunites at Carrington next month.

Mbeumo has made United his priority, despite attracting interest from Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Unlike Newcastle, Tottenham, and Liverpool, United are winning the race for Mbeumo, despite the fact that they won’t have European football next term.

However, a change in management at Tottenham could spark a new threat for the Red Devils.

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham after leading the club to Europa League glory against United in May.

Tottenham will inevitably be linked with Brentford manager Thomas Frank, who could look to disrupt United’s transfer plans by stepping up a pursuit for Mbeumo if he is made Postecoglou’s successor.

Mbeumo will have a connection with Frank from his time at Brentford, but it remains to be seen if he’d be willing to turn down United to rekindle it when he leaves his current club.

Of course, nothing has been done yet and Frank remains the Brentford manager, but Tottenham won’t be wasting any time moving for a new manager.

Tottenham will have multiple options they feel can offer an upgrade on Postecoglou, even though he ended their trophy drought.

With Frank being installed as the favourite to replace Postecoglou, who departs only 24 months into a long-term deal, United need to get the Mbeumo deal done and dusted before it’s too late.

What has Thomas Frank said about Bryan Mbeumo?

It’s a difficult time for Brentford fans.

After becoming a strong Premier League outfit under Frank, their manager and best players are being targeted by bigger clubs this summer.

Some players will remain but Brentford will struggle to keep them all if the players are presented with better deals.

Frank recently spoke about Mbeumo’s future during an interview with Tipsbladet.

“It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot,” Frank said. “Really a lot.

“Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done.

“There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for.”

Frank added: “I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don’t look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer.

“How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player.”

Gary Neville highlights Garnacho error and says Manchester United teammate 'can't control a ball' - United In Focus
Description

Gary Neville, as expected, pulled no punches after watching Manchester United turn in a Europa League final performance so flat it almost defies the physics of a three-dimensional universe.

That 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao was, the former Manchester United captain says, the ‘perfect storm of absolute rubbish’.

A perfect storm made up of dreadful leadership from the very top – the fish rots from the head, as the old saying goes – of poor, costly recruitment mistakes, and of bad game management.

Ruben Amorim must accept his share of the blame. And, to be fair to the former Sporting boss, he is not the type of excuse himself from responsibility.

Gary Neville agrees with Rio Ferdinand’s assessment that Amorim probably should have picked Alejandro Garnacho ahead of an ineffective Mason Mount, all the while freeing up 19-goal talisman Bruno Fernandes to do what he does best in a more advanced role.

Yet with Andre Onana at one end and Rasmus Hojlund at the other – Roy Keane questioned Onana’s role in Brennan Johnson’s winner while Hojlund touched the ball only 15 times in 71 minutes – there does appear to be a limit to what Ruben Amorim can really achieve in charge of a team frequently underperforming their XG in both the defensive and attacking departments.

It is not Amorim’s job, after all, to parry simple saves or to stick the ball in the back of the opposition net.

Gary Neville worried by Rasmus Hojlund’s Manchester United struggles

Neville, speaking ahead of Sunday’s final day clash with Aston Villa, feels that an insipid display completely devoid of invention and intensity can be explained by a lack of individual quality as well as some questionable tactical decisions.

More United News

A ‘perfect storm’, indeed.

“I thought Mount would play. Yeah, I would probably have Garnacho in ahead of Mount. I just think having Garnacho and Amad Diallo, [providing a bit more fire]…” Neville begins.

“Hojlund, he’s struggling like mad, the boy. He can’t control a ball, he can’t make a run [even though] the service to him isn’t great.

“The reality of the performance for me [proved that] if Bruno is not on his game then you’ve basically lost everything almost. Bruno probably had one of his most challenging games.”

Neville calls for big changes again at Old Trafford

It is certainly difficult to remember a poorer performance from Man United’s talismanic captain. His passing slack, his influence minimal and his best chance – a header guided wide heading into the dying stages – wastefully off target.

There is little some high-quality recruitment cannot solve, though, and Man United’s £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha will ease some of the burden on Fernandes’ shoulders.

Yet, Cunha is only one piece of a mighty jigsaw.

“I’ve called them a disgrace. I’ve called them all the words you can imagine,” Neville sighs, again calling out those taking the big and usually ill-advised decisions in the boardroom. “This is a time for serious, serious reflection at that football club.

“This is a result of many, many years of horrific recruitment, horrific decisions in and out of the club, of ownership, all the way through to managers, scouts, people in positions who have signed players.

“It’s like the perfect storm of absolute rubbish.”

The good news, a sliver of a silver lining, is that the curtain will officially and finally fall on a torturous campaign when the final whistle blows at around 5pm on Sunday.

Roy Keane makes Andre Onana claim and names player who ‘sums up’ Manchester United problem

Description

If there was any moment from any Manchester United player which left Roy Keane with even the briefest pang of pride, it probably came after the full time whistle as a jubilant Tottenham were waiting to get their mitts on the Europa League trophy.

Harry Maguire had been engaged in a running battle with Cristian Romero – Tottenham’s troublesome centre-back throwing his weight around and his body to the floor in true ‘plastic hardman’ fashion – throughout much of Wednesday evening.

A battle that threatened to come to a head as a triumphant Romero sauntered through a dejected Manchester United roster at full-time.

Maguire, clearly feeling that the combustible Argentine was looking to rub salt into Red Devils wounds, soon set about chasing Romero off into the distance. By that point, however, the damage was well and truly done. A battle lost.

Romero wrote his name into Tottenham Hotspur folklore while the man whose last-gasp winner against Lyon helped pave the way to Bilbao was left mourning a second Europa League final defeat of his Manchester United career.

According to The Times, Maguire is one of only four players Ruben Amorim wants to keep at all odds beyond the summer. The England international pulled no punches as United’s trophyless fate was sealed by Brennan Johnson’s 42nd minute decider either, bemoaning a campaign for which even the word ‘inconsistent’ feels almost like a compliment.

Roy Keane, as anyone au fait with his fork-tongued ways, was far harsher in his own assessment of a Man United performance devoid of any real threat or intensity.

Roy Keane says Harry Maguire ‘sums up’ Manchester United issues

Mere weeks after Maguire popped up at centre-forward to stun Lyon in the quarter-finals, the sight of the big defender camped in the Tottenham penalty area during the final stages was another damning indictment of a squad posing about as much threat as a Storm Trooper with a weak wrist and shattered glasses.

More United News

Yet, in Ruben Amorim’s defence, Rasmus Hojlund can only dream of emulating Maguire’s penalty-box presence.

“United lack real quality,” Keane sighs. “And when you are depending on Harry Maguire to get you out of jail at the end, it sums up their problem.”

Luke Shaw and Andre Onana helpless as Brendan Johnson scores Tottenham winner

The legendary Man United captain was less than impressed with Maguire’s involvement at the other end of the pitch, too.

Drawn out by the presence of Dominic Solanke, neither Maguire, Luke Shaw nor Patrick Dorgu managed to clear a testing delivery as Brennan Johnson bundled his finish past a typically-sluggish Andre Onana.

“It’s a huge moment. There was a real lack of quality and they’ve [United] almost brought their league form to the table,” Keane adds at the end of a night in which Andre Onana may have sealed his fate ahead of what is likely to be a massive summer of change.

“We mentioned before the game about getting bodies in there, United having bodies back, but not obviously not doing their defensive jobs.

“I think Maguire has got to focus on clearing the ball. Johnson does a brilliant run, obviously nice and aggressive. United have enough bodies back but they are not doing enough. Again, there are question marks over the goalkeeper.

“Spurs aren’t doing anything extraordinary, it’s all pretty simple play. That is where you have to be really critical of United’s defensive shape and decision-making. Players not doing their jobs, not concentrating.

“Shaw maybe not match fit, Maguire focussed on his man [Solanke]. Remember, there’s only one ball. Just focus on the ball sometimes.

“You’ve got to multitask. You’ve got to be able to do this [battle with the striker] and still clear the ball. It’s as if [Maguire is thinking], ‘I’ve got my man here!’. But no, you’ve got to multitask and do more than one job.”

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim “needs to look at himself” in the summer and address one elephant in the room during his reign at Old Trafford.

That is according to former England and Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle, who dropped a scathing verdict on Ruben Amorim after the 2025 Europa League final.

The Red Devils missed out on major silverware on Wednesday evening after Manchester United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final in Spain.

Brennan Johnson broke the deadlock for Tottenham against United in the first half and the 23-year-old forward’s opener also sealed the win on the night for Spurs.

United were unable to rally back against Tottenham after the break and Spurs maintained their 1-0 advantage over United at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

The Red Devils have failed to secure Champions League football for next season and will be without any European football for the 2025-26 campaign under Amorim.

Glenn Hoddle tells Ruben Amorim the major question that he needs to ask himself after Man Utd’s Europa League defeat to Tottenham

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim now only has one match remaining in the Red Devils’ woeful 2024-25 Premier League campaign at Old Trafford.

United will leave Bilbao after their defeat to Tottenham and will now welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford for their final Premier League fixture of the season.

The Red Devils languish in 16th place in the Premier League table and United are only one point clear of Europa League winners Spurs, who are currently 17th.

United have been abysmal in their Premier League campaign and the Red Devils will end the current season with their worst finish in Premier League history.

The Premier League club have lost a whopping 18 times in 37 league fixtures and United have only managed 10 wins ahead of their encounter with Aston Villa.

Speaking after the 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, Glenn Hoddle raised concerns about Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United for next season.

“Ruben Amorim will be under pressure if he doesn’t start well next year,” he said on TNT Sports, as per BBC Sport.

“They have never played three at the back [at] Man Utd – he needs to look at himself in the summer and think, ‘In the Premier League, can I make this work?’

“Tonight, they ran out of ideas, again.”

Ruben Amorim makes his position clear as Man Utd manager after the 2025 Europa League final vs Tottenham in Bilbao

Amorim sent out a powerful message that he still feels that he is the right man to lead United and remains “confident” about his role as head coach of the Red Devils.

“I am confident I am still the guy, more than in the beginning,” he told TNT Sports.

“I know the patience of the fans will be really short in the next season, but I guarantee you I will not quit and I will not go away. I am really confident.

“I know the club; I know what it means to coach this club and I understand what this team needs. If they say it is better to change, I will leave in [sic] the next day.

“I am really confident in myself to continue to do the job if the board wants me.”

United have lost four of their last five Premier League matches ahead of hosting Aston Villa for a 4pm kick-off at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.

Manchester United fans dropped their clear-cut feelings on Alejandro Garnacho after the player’s performance for Ruben Amorim’s men in the 2025 Europa League final against Tottenham.

The Red Devils reached the Europa League final in the 2024-25 campaign after Manchester United knocked La Liga side Athletic Club out of the semi-finals.

United beat 10-man Athletic Club 3-0 in Bilbao for the first leg of the semi-finals before the Red Devils hosted the Spanish club at Old Trafford for the return leg.

The Red Devils came from behind in the second leg after going 1-0 down at Old Trafford before half-time and United secured a 4-1 win over Athletic Club at home.

United punched their ticket to the Europa League final on Wednesday and Ruben Amorim’s men met Premier League rivals Tottenham in an all-English showdown.

Spurs secured their place in the final after Ange Postecoglou’s men secured victories both home and away over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-finals.

Ange Postecoglou’s side defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first leg before Spurs beat the Norwegian side 2-0 in Norway in the return leg.

Man Utd fans’ reaction to Alejandro Garnacho’s performance vs Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final in Bilbao

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim turned to his bench in the second half and brought Alejandro Garnacho for the Europa League final against Tottenham.

Mason Mount was withdrawn for Alejandro Garnacho and the United and Argentina winger’s absence from the starting XI was a major contention issue for United fans.

Red Devils supporters insisted that Garnacho should have played in the No 10 role for the Europa League final ahead of Mason Mount on Wednesday evening.

One United fan said: “Garnacho should’ve started the [match] or at least come on at HT [half-time].”

Another X user wrote: “Garnacho shot on target within minutes he came on; WHY DID HE NOT START! [sic].”

“Garnacho should’ve started, NGL,” somebody else tweeted.

While a fourth added: “Garnacho did more in [two] minutes than Mount. LOL.”

And a fifth Red Devils supporter posted: “United definitely should [have] brought on Garnacho a lot sooner.”

Somebody else argued: “Mount was anonymous tonight. Garnacho has somewhat done more than him since he’s come on.”

“Can’t believe Garnacho didn’t start,” another United fan commented.

An eighth simply suggested: “Garnacho already being the most potent attacker on the pitch after [five] mins of being on.”

What happened in the 2025 Europa League final between Man Utd and Tottenham at the San Mames Stadium?

Tottenham inflicted the first blow against United in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening after Brennan Johnson fired Spurs into the lead in the first half.

Brennan Johnson latched onto a Pape Matar Sarr cross and the 23-year-old Welsh forward was able to poke a scrappy finish past Andre Onana from close range.

However, Johnson’s finish for Spurs was questionable and the ball appeared to take a major deflection off Luke Shaw before landing in the back of the United net.

Ange Postecoglou’s men held a 1-0 lead at half-time at the San Mames Stadium and Spurs took their advantage into the second half against United in Bilbao.

United were unable to climb back into the contest in the second half and Tottenham defeated the Red Devils 1-0 and clinched the Europa League trophy in Bilbao.

United will now return to action on Sunday for their final Premier League match of the 2024-25 campaign against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Paul Scholes predicts six Man Utd vs Tottenham players who are 'capable' of being difference-makers in Europa League final - United In Focus
Description

Paul Scholes has claimed that the Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham is “more likely” to be settled by a “mistake” rather than “quality.”

Manchester United face Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening in an all-English showdown at Athletic Club’s San Mames Stadium.

The Red Devils earned their progression to the 2025 final after Manchester United overcame La Liga outfit Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the tournament.

United defeated Athletic Club 3-0 in the first leg in Spain before the Red Devils came from behind to beat the Spanish club 4-1 at Old Trafford in the return leg.

Tottenham, on the other hand, punched their route to the final by defeating Bodo/Glimt across both legs of their Europa League semi-final bracket.

Spurs picked up a 3-1 win in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Ange Postecoglou’s men travelled to Norway and secured a 2-0 win over Bodo/Glimt.

Despite reaching the Europa League final in Bilbao, both United and Tottenham have significantly underperformed in their respective Premier League campaigns.

United languish in 16th place in the Premier League table and Ruben Amorim’s men are only one point clear of 17th-place Tottenham with one league match remaining.

Paul Scholes singles out ‘match-winning’ Man Utd vs Tottenham players in the 2025 Europa League final in Bilbao

Ruben Amorim could sign off his season as Manchester United manager with his first piece of silverware if the Red Devils can once again lift the Europa League trophy.

The Europa League title is also essential for United to secure their only route back to Europe for the 2025-26 season via Champions League football.

Tottenham, much like United, also need to win the Europa League final if Ange Postecoglou’s side want to play European football for the following campaign.

Paul Scholes admitted that he could see Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes or Alejandro Garnacho being the difference-maker for United in the Europa League final.

The 50-year-old United legend also singled out Heung-min Son, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson for the impact that they could have for Spurs against United.

Speaking in his TNT Sports column, Scholes said: “When you look at the form of the two teams in the Premier League, they both make defensive mistakes and errors are more likely with the pressure on.

“However, there are players like Fernandes, Amad, Garnacho, Son, Solanke and Johnson who are capable of match-winning moments.

“It is more likely that a mistake rather than a bit of quality will decide the game, but with these two teams, anything can happen.”

What is Paul Scholes’ Man United vs Tottenham prediction for the 2025 Europa League final?

Scholes insisted that the Europa League final is “hard to call,” but the former United midfielder ‘favours’ the Red Devils in getting “over the line” against Tottenham.

“I think without [James] Maddison and [Dejan] Kulusevski, Spurs are forced to be more defensive,” he continued.

“Those two are the best players and make the team tick and play good football.

“They both played a part and scored in Spurs’ three wins over United this season. They make a huge difference to this Spurs team and without them, they are massively weaker.

“It’s so hard to call this game. I think with Spurs missing those two key players and United having more experience in finals and winning trophies, I just favour United to get over the line.”

United and Tottenham’s Europa League clash at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao is slated for kick-off at 8pm UK time on Wednesday evening.

The stage is now set for Ruben Amorim to unleash his key Manchester United first-team star in the Europa League final against Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

Manchester United and Tottenham’s 2025 Europa League final encounter will be hosted at Athletic Club’s San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on 21st May.

The Red Devils have already played at the San Mames Stadium this season and United defeated 10-man Athletic Club 3-0 in the first leg of the semi-finals.

Following United’s crucial advantage over Athletic Club in Spain earlier this month, the La Liga outfit were welcomed to Old Trafford for the return-leg match.

The Spanish side delivered the first blow of the tie by going 1-0 up ahead of half-time before United came from behind against Athletic Club after the break at home.

United thumped Athletic Club 4-1 in a sensational comeback win in the second half and the Red Devils punched their ticket to an all-English showdown in the final.

Spurs, meanwhile, defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Ange Postecoglou’s men won 2-0 against the Norwegian side in Norway.

The Red Devils are now within touching distance of the Europa League trophy and Ruben Amorim could bag his first piece of major silverware as United manager.

Ruben Amorim must see shades of Casemiro’s Real Madrid version in Man Utd’s display vs Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final

Casemiro has seen a resurgence in form at Old Trafford and the Manchester United midfielder has once again become a key midfield influence for the Red Devils.

The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder is under contract with United until 2026 and Casemiro’s future had been in doubt amid the 2024-25 season at Old Trafford.

However, Casemiro has seen a turnaround in fortunes in recent months and has established himself as a key United first-team player under manager Amorim.

The Brazil star has made 12 appearances in the 2024-25 Europa League run and Casemiro has shown his invaluable experience on the European stage for United.

Casemiro impressed United fans with his display against Real Sociedad in the second leg of the Europa League round-of-16 tie in the 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

The ex-Real Madrid star would later bag a hat-trick of assists in United’s sensational 5-4 comeback win over Lyon at Old Trafford in the second leg of the quarter-finals.

Casemiro has continued to exert his incredible influence from the heart of midfield and the Brazil international scored in both semi-final legs against Athletic Club.

The United star is all too familiar with the expectations of playing in a European final, having lifted a whopping five Champions League titles with Los Blancos.

There will be no doubt that Amorim will need to call upon Casemiro’s elite mentality in the Europa League again when United clash with Tottenham in the final.

Ruben Amorim learned first-hand why Casemiro is important to his Man Utd plans for now amid the Europa League campaign

Amorim made his feelings clear on Casemiro’s rejuvenation under his reign at Old Trafford and highlighted the United midfielder’s incredible winning mentality.

“The important thing with Casemiro is that he won everything with Real Madrid,” he said in April, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“He wasn’t playing because I understood that in that moment, he wasn’t the best option for how we [wanted] to play and he continued to work.

“I look at my players in the same way. If you improve what we ask of them, they have the opportunity. If they play well, they continue to play.

“That was the situation for Casemiro. The credit is all [on] the player. He is our player and will continue to be our player.”

United and Tottenham’s Europa League showdown in the 2025 final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao is scheduled for an 8pm kick-off time in the UK.

Pedro Porro warns Tottenham about ‘magnificent’ Ruben Amorim ahead of Europa League final, ‘the way he…’ - United In Focus
Description

Pedro Porro has warned his Tottenham Hotspur teammates not to underestimate Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United takes place in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Tottenham are 17th in the Premier League table, with United one point and one place better off, but they meet in Spain for a shot at securing a place in the Champions League.

With Ange Postecoglou under pressure to keep his job at Tottenham, Ruben Amorim has been praising the opposing manager ahead of the final. Still, there is no denying that both teams have endured turbulent campaigns.

Both teams enter the final with several injuries, meaning key players will miss the biggest game of the season. They include Lisandro Martinez, Joshua Zirkzee, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Moreover, Amorim is waiting to see whether Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt will pass fitness tests for the game, after sustaining new injuries in the lead-up to the final.

Pedro Porro grateful to Ruben Amorim

Tottenham full-back Pedro Porro has praised Amorim for his human touch after crediting the United head coach’s role in helping his career reach new levels.

Pedro is looking to spoil the night in Bilbao for Amorim and United, but he doesn’t forget the care and attention shown to him at Sporting CP before he signed for Tottenham.

More United News

“He’s a magnificent coach,” Porro said, as quoted by The Mirror. “I know him very well. It’s the way he treats the players. He always spoke to me as a person, it’s not just how he treated me from a football perspective.

“The way he works on the pitch is also very good but in this case I hope I’m the happy one.

“When I arrived (at Sporting), it was a little bit difficult for me. But like everything in football, sometimes it’s hard at first right?

“Things in life don’t always go the way you want them to but when I got there the truth is I had a lot of help from him and at that moment my football exploded. I’m really grateful to him for that.”

Much like United, Tottenham have been much stronger in Europe, although only the Red Devils can go the entire way unbeaten if they win on Wednesday night. Only three teams in Europa League history have achieved that feat. They include Chelsea (2019), Villarreal (2021) and Eintracht Frankfurt (2022).

Porro added: “The truth is we have very good feelings.

“Ignoring the Premier League, we are feeling good. The job the team has done in Europe has been enormous and I think we feel we’re in a good place. Those feelings have to carry over to the day of the final now.

“We have to forget everything else because we’ve worked very hard to get to this final. It’s very difficult to get to where we are in this Europa League and it’s where we want to be.”

Porro believes Tottenham face a ‘very good’ Man Utd team

United fans will argue that this may be one of the worst teams they’ve had in recent years, but it doesn’t sound like Porro agrees with that.

Tottenham have beaten United on three different occasions this season, but Porro will not be underestimating the Red Devils in Bilbao.

He added: “Well, I don’t think they’ve lost in the Europa League. They’re a very good team, with a very good coach no? In the end they haven’t had the luck in the Premier League, it’s like us isn’t it?

“But we’re two teams that know how to deliver and it’s going to be a very beautiful final. I hope we’re the happy ones at the end.”

3 Europa League final predictions as Manchester United seek revenge over Tottenham - United In Focus
Description

Manchester United are preparing to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Thousands of Manchester United fans are travelling to Bilbao for Wednesday’s Europa League final against Tottenham, which will be the fourth time two teams from the same country compete to lift the trophy.

United reached the final as the only unbeaten team in the competition, while Tottenham breezed past Bødo/Glimt in the semi-finals.

Like United, Tottenham have multiple injuries going into the game. Ruben Amorim will be without Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee, while he waits to hear whether Leny Yoro or Matthijs de Ligt will pass fit after picking up injuries in recent weeks.

Unsurprisingly, United and Tottenham got into the final after losing their last league matches. That would explain why they are both set to finish the campaign just above the relegation zone.

Without further ado, here are three predictions ahead of the Europa League final.

Ruben Amorim to stick with same defence

United have had an array of injuries throughout the season, with the defence hit worse than other areas of the team.

More United News

Amorim opted for a back-three of Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw against Chelsea and he is likely to stick with that against Tottenham.

There is a slight chance he kept Yoro and De Ligt out of the game to keep them fully refreshed to face Tottenham, but they’ve missed a few games in recent weeks and it would be a risk to throw them back in for such a match.

United’s head coach will make his decision based on the training sessions between now and the eagerly awaited trip to Bilbao.

Amad Diallo will finally play in a Europa League final

Amad Diallo will be making his third Europa League final appearance, but he has yet to play a single minute after being an unused substitute twice.

In 2021, the Ivory Coast international was on the bench for United against Villarreal, as the Red Devils lost on penalties.

Amad joined Rangers on loan the following season and was an unused substitute in the Europa League final in Seville when the Scottish side lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Now a star in United’s first team and fully recovered from injury, Amad will hopefully play a key role in this year’s Europa League final against Tottenham.

Manchester United to beat Tottenham in the Europa League final

Although I have plenty of nerves ahead of the final, my belief grows whenever we get closer to kick-off. It’s difficult to ignore the fact that United have been abysmal against other Premier League clubs but it should be different this time with more at stake.

This United team have proven in the past that they can raise their game for big occasions. Their biggest problem is not being able to play at a high level consistently, which explains why United were unable to win back-to-back games in the league this season.

Tottenham have their injuries in attack, while United have theirs in midfield. It will be two underperforming teams battling it out for a place in Europe’s most prestigious tournament.

I think United will be able to cope with the occasion and Ange Postecoglou’s side will come up short. The Reds are coming away from Bilbao with a 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Ruben Amorim will have to do something that only Sir Alex Ferguson has managed as Manchester United manager if he is to win the Europa League.

After a difficult six months in charge of Manchester United, the Europa League has been an escape for Ruben Amorim.

With the Premier League being an absolute nightmare for the 40-year-old, Europe is where he has been able to crack a smile. One of the only times he has allowed himself to celebrate was against Athletic Club during the 7-1 aggregate win.

In this game, when Mason Mount scored, Amorim celebrated like a proud father with a smile beaming from ear to ear. This isn’t a sight we are used to seeing from the Portuguese head coach.

However, there will not be smiles on Wednesday night in the build-up to the Europa League final against Spurs, with Amorim having to snap one worrying streak in order to win the trophy.

Manchester United have only beaten an Ange Postecoglou side once

In the build-up to the final, one point being consistently mentioned by those who believe Tottenham will win the game is that Spurs have beaten United three times this season.

In fact, since Ange Postecoglou arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, United have not beaten Spurs in five attempts, losing four and drawing one.

Two of these defeats have been under Amorim, although both have been by narrow margins.

Manchester United vs Tottenham results with Ange Postecoglou as manager

However, Postecoglou’s record against United is not flawless, but we need to go all the way back to 2000 and Sir Alex Ferguson to find when the Red Devils beat a side coached by the Australian.

The only win came against South Melbourne in 2000 in the Club World Cup when Ferguson met Postecoglou in his first role as a manager.

So if United are to lift the trophy on Wednesday, it will mean Amorim has to snap this streak, and the odds would suggest he will, as few teams rack up such a winless streak against the Red Devils.

Ruben Amorim has a major advantage over Ange Postecoglou for the Europa League final

While Spurs have enjoyed good times over the past two years against United, the fact that this is a final hands Amorim an advantage.

Spurs are notorious for losing big games, while on The Overlap, Paul Scholes has predicted, United will find a way to win the game, with players having a winning mentality key for this.

In addition to this, Gary Neville has suggested Casemiro will be key for United as his winning mindset won’t let his teammates lose as he has done for the majority of the competition so far.

Amorim is managing a club with a tradition of winning, and this alone gives him an advantage over Postecoglou. When considering Spurs beat United at their worst, this game should tell a different story, as in Europe, Amorim’s side has been immense.
