Description

Scott Parker has emerged as a potential manager target for Tottenham Hotspur out of the blue.

Parker is admired by Tottenham and understandably so, due to his work in Spurs’ academy and the tremendous job he has done during his time at Burnley.

Even Jamie O’Hara would like Scott Parker managing Tottenham having played with him at Spurs.

But a true reflection of how exciting a manager Scott Parker is can only be revealed by those who have gone toe-to-toe with him — one of them being Pep Guardiola when the former Tottenham midfielder was coaching Fulham in March 2021.

Pep Guardiola explained why Tottenham manager target Scott Parker is ‘incredibly good’

Guardiola initially lauded Scott Parker due to the stellar job he felt the Englishman was doing during his time at Craven Cottage, as he said via Manchester City’s official website: “Since day one, they have Fulham have played incredibly well. They were relegated with Scott at the end of the season and after that, they were promoted. In English football, there are incredibly good managers such as Graham Potter at Brighton and Scott at Fulham.”

Pep Guardiola went on to explain that if he was a fan, he would love watching Scott Parker’s teams due to how he sticks to his principles and plays an entertaining brand of football: “It is what I admire the most. What I admire is that when it is not going well they continue to do it and at the end the results come.”

“They make the sport nice, when both teams want to attack and create, not just wait for one mistake.”

Guardiola continued to laud Scott Parker, saying four years ago: “I have the feeling that all the new generation of managers have this quality. Sometimes they cannot do it. You have the idea that you are going to lose a lot of games, but you are going to draw a few games and win the games you need to.”

“At the end, the spectators will enjoy it more, advertising will be higher, the TV ratings will be higher.”

Scott Parker head-to-head record vs Pep Guardiola

Scott Parker impressed Sir Alex Ferguson as well and seems to be held in high esteem amongst some of the greatest managers in the history of the game.

Even Gary Neville called Parker a “special” manager in the past.

While Tottenham will be encouraged by all the glowing endorsements made to highlight how brilliant Scott Parker is, they might not be too bothered by his head-to-head record against Pep Guardiola.

Outsmarting Guardiola is no mean feat and especially considering Parker was managing sides in the past who were not expected to topple his great Manchester City teams.

But if the 44-year-olds returns to Tottenham, he will be hoping to outthink elite tacticians like Pep Guardiola amongst many others in the Premier League.

‘Magnificent’ player is more likely to stay at Tottenham ‘if Ange Postecoglou leaves’

TBR Football understands that James Maddison’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is far from certain this summer.

Spurs have had a really poor campaign this season. They have lost 18 games in the Premier League and are currently 16th in the table.

TBR can confirm that Ange Postecoglou is set to leave Tottenham even if he wins the Europa League and ends Spurs’ 17-year wait for a trophy.

That could have a huge impact on one player this summer.

James Maddison and Ange Postecoglou’s futures could be interlinked

James Maddison’s future at Tottenham could be directly dependent on what happens with Ange Postecoglou, sources have told TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey.

The Englishman was signed by the current Spurs boss when he took charge of the club in the summer of 2023. Maddison was viewed as a marquee signing at the time.

The former Leicester City man started his Tottenham career brilliantly. He was fantastic in his first few months at the club, but since his injury, he hasn’t quite been the same.

Gary Lineker even questioned if Maddison has fallen out with Postecoglou after seeing that the Spurs boss wasn’t giving him consistent minutes.

Maddison has played the full 90 minutes in just two games all season – against Everton in the Premier League and against Tamworth in the cup.

That has led to speculation about his future, but Bailey has confirmed that Maddison is likely to stay if Postecoglou is shown the door.

He said: “James Maddison’s future is far from certain to be at Tottenham. But we could very well see a summer of upheaval at Spurs.

“If Ange Postecoglou leaves, the Maddison conversation will have to be had – I believe there is more chance of him staying, should the manager leave. Maddison has England aspirations and he has that in his mind.

“And I can tell you I know of a couple of Premier League clubs who would want him, but as said, it will depend on who is in charge – he could yet have a long-term future at Spurs.”

James Maddison stats in 2024/25 compared to 2023/24

Maddison has come under a lot of criticism for his performances at Tottenham this season.

The Englishman, hailed as ‘magnificent‘ by Tim Sherwood, has failed to turn up in several games, and that has led to a lot of debate about him over the last few months.

But how have his numbers been this season compared to last?

Maddison’s numbers show clear improvement this season, but the reason for all the criticism has been his performances in recent months.

Since Boxing Day, the Englishman has managed just one goal and two assists in the Premier League, which is not good enough for a player of his quality.

It remains to be seen if anything will change with the new manager next season if Postcoglou leaves.

Tottenham admire manager who actually played 63 times for Spurs as a potential Ange Postecoglou replacement

Description

It seems like the managerial merry-go-round is seemingly never-ending at Tottenham Hotspur, considering Ange Postecoglou has been heavily speculated with an exit at the end of the season.

Guglielmo Vicario publicly backed Postecoglou and perhaps plenty of the Spurs players within the dressing room still believe in the 59-year-old.

But Tottenham sacking Ange Postecoglou seems likely at the end of the season and it remains doubtful whether even winning the Europa League will save his blushes.

Several managers have been linked with taking over from the 59-year-old at Tottenham.

Scott Parker is admired by Tottenham as possible Ange Postecoglou replacement

Andoni Iraola is Tottenham’s dream heir to Postecoglou.

However, Iraola has snubbed a move to Tottenham even before Ange Postecoglou’s sacking.

Marco Silva is admired by Tottenham as well as the AFC Bournemouth boss alongside the Portuguese tactician are two of their primary targets.

However, the Daily Mail can now reveal that some people at Tottenham are huge fans of Scott Parker as a potential successor to Ange Postecoglou.

Scott Parker, who played for Tottenham 63 times led Burnley to promotion and will be ready to revive his reputation in the Premier League next season after his disappointing spells at Fulham and Bournemouth.

If Parker were to be keen on managing Spurs, the advantage that lies in his favour is that he has already coached as a part of their academy setup previously.

Should Tottenham appoint Scott Parker?

Daniel Levy certainly has a massive decision on his hands.

As impressive as Scott Parker has been during his time at Burnley, surely a much more seasoned candidate would appeal far more to Tottenham on their hunt to replace Ange Postecoglou.

However, Spurs seemed to have explored every possible route when it comes to appointing managers that have all ended in heartbreak.

Micah Richards tears into three Tottenham players and says one of them looks like a ‘headless chicken’

Tottenham Hotspur have had a terrible season.

The North Londoners have lost 18 times in the Premier League already, and there are still five games left to be played in the competition.

The Europa League is Spurs’ only hope at the moment, and although they are among the favourites to win it, their key players will have to step up to end their trophy drought.

Unfortunately for Tottenham fans, many of their players haven’t been good enough this season. Micah Richards has taken aim at three of them.

Micah Richards names the three Tottenham players who haven’t been good this season

Tottenham deserve all of the criticism they have been getting this season.

A club of the size of Spurs should be nowhere near 16th, but after winning just 11 of their first 33 games in the Premier League, that is their position right now.

Tottenham still have five games left in the Premier League, and there’s every chance that their loss column will go beyond 20.

That is unacceptable, despite their injury issues.

Richards, like all the Spurs fans, is disappointed with many of their players, and he has now had his say on three of them – summer signings Dominic Solanke and young Wilson Odobert, and January arrival Mathys Tel.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, he said: “Solanke has been a disappointment all season. He has had knocks as well. Tel, he came from Bayern Munich, he looks really good for 20 minutes and then drifts out of the game.

“Odobert, they got from Burnley. I remember when Vincent Kompany signed him, he looked like he was going to be an absolute superstar. But, he looks like a bit of a headless chicken at the moment.

“Maybe it’s just down to confidence, but it’s not good enough.”

Who is to blame for Tottenham’s terrible performances this season?

This really has been a season to forget for Tottenham.

There has been very little to cheer about for Spurs fans from the start of the campaign, and winning the Europa League would be the only source of joy for the supporters.

Ange Postecoglou will blame injuries for his side’s performances, but even when most of their players have been fit, the results just haven’t been good enough.

So, the blame must fall on the manager. 18 defeats in a season is just not acceptable, and winning the Europa League will not change those results.

That is why we think Tottenham should part ways with Postecoglou at the end of the season – irrespective of what happens in the final weeks of the campaign.

Daniel Levy has hidden £375m stash as two big changes coming at Tottenham this summer

Description

Tottenham could simultaneously finish 17th in the Premier League and become a European champion this season – a pub quiz question in the making, yes, but also a fascinating moment for Daniel Levy’s legacy.

Spurs’ win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final was fuelled by the kind of grit that has been lacking in Ange Postecoglou’s side’s 22 defeats in all competitions this season

It was, in typically Tottenham fashion, followed by a pitiful defeat to Nottingham Forest a few days later.

It’s not exactly a hot take to say that the North Londoners’ season – and probably Postecoglou’s job – hinges on the Europa League. That has been apparent since Christmas.

The semi-final clash against Bodo/Glimt is perhaps the most financially lopsided fixture at this stage of a European completion in football history – and that’s not hyperbole.

Spurs’ revenue in the last financial year was £528m, down from a club-record £550m the previous season. That was the ninth-highest in world football.

Bodo Glimt’s revenue is up massively since they got into Europe but is still only around £42m.

For context, that’s probably about the amount Spurs banked from non-football events at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last year – Beyoncé, the NFL and the like. £42m is also about the same as Bristol City’s revenue last year.

So, needless to say, Spurs really should win this but have no divine right to do so.

If they somehow end their trophy drought this season, they will secure qualification for the Champions League during the most lucrative era in the competition’s history.

For Daniel Levy, that would represent an unqualified success.

As well as delivering revenues likely in excess of £600m next year, it would also define his time as the club’s chairman and co-owner.

Maybe – and this is speculation – it might also represent a natural moment to cash in and sell Tottenham outright. He has been looking for new investment, after all.

If he did choose to divest his personal interest in the club, he would walk away a billionaire. Levy is said to value Tottenham at around £3.75bn.

ENIC meanwhile would get a quite astonishing markup on the £40m or so they paid to buy the club from Alan Sugar almost 25 years ago.

Should there be a takeover, there would be no shortage of buyers thanks to the way ENIC and Levy have run the club for so many years.

It’s a cash profitable business, which is rare bird in football finance. And the latest figures show exactly how lucrative Spurs really are.

Tottenham have £375m cash in the bank, far more than the club accounts show

On paper, Spurs have made a loss every year since they moved into their new stadium.

However, that is primarily because of the deprecation on the stadium. That’s how accountants measure the value of an asset over time. It’s not a cash expense – it’s basically a useful fiction to measure the health of the business as a whole.

When you look at cash flow or a metric like EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) the picture is far rosier. Spurs remain the most profitable club in Premier League history on that basis.

Their corporate structure is relatively complex, consisting of 13 companies registered at Lilywhite House in total.

Research from Jason Stephens titled ‘Premier League Clubs – The Hidden Millions’ for MCO Insights shows that those companies have £2.7bn worth of assets on the books and £375m cash in the bank.

Summer of change for Tottenham

This summer, former Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham will join Spurs, where he will take up the same position underneath Levy in the hierarchy.

As well as Ange Postecoglou’s future being in doubt, so too is that of Scott Munn, the club’s chief football officer.

TBR Football has reported that Fabio Paratici could return to Spurs in a strategic or advisory capacity too once his ban from football has expired.

With £375m in liquid capital, they certainly have the budget to ring the chances behind the scenes.

How rich really are Daniel Levy and ENIC?

Daniel Levy is full-time at Spurs, unlike ENIC, who are now more of a passive presence following Joe Lewis’ conviction for insider trading in 2023.

Little is known about Levy’s investment interests outside Spurs, but he started his career in investment banking and has professed to be very interested in private equity, so he likely has some wealth in that department.

But being a paper billionaire and cash-rich are two very different things. Most of Levy’s net worth, for instance, is tied up in Spurs. That’s a very illiquid asset, and the cash they have in the bank is needed for operating expenses.

He does make a very healthy salary too, but we’re dealing in single-digit millions, not the multiple billions that Spurs are worth.

Joe Lewis still ranks among the richest individual owners in the Premier League, though it is his family estate that now controls his share in Spurs.

However, the consortium model is making individual owners a spent force in football.

Chelsea, for example, have multiple co-owners who are worth billions upon billions. Club valuations are now so high that it’s nigh on impossible for an individual to buy a club like Spurs – at least, not as part of a diversified portfolio.

Sovereign wealth is a similar issue. Incidentally, Qatari sovereign wealth is said to be a potential investment candidate for Spurs.

That said, ENIC and Levy would have no issues with accessing debt if they did want to push the boat out in the transfer market.

We’ve seen other clubs do this with varying degrees of success, though the equity investment route is more sustainable. Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) would certainly be no obstacle.

It’s an academic point, however, as it’s not in the owners DNA to live beyond their means.

“We cannot spend what we do not have,” as Levy himself put it in the preamble to Spurs’ most recent accounts, so don’t expect to see sustained movement away from the self-funding model any time soon.

The ‘out of the box’ tactic Tottenham are being told to use to beat Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League

The ‘out of the box’ tactic Tottenham are being told to use to beat Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham only have one hope to save their season – winning the Europa League.

Spurs have been terrible all year long, they’re in the bottom-half of the Premier League, and Ange Postecoglou is likely to be sacked come the end of the campaign.

However, a Europa League win would deliver silverware and a place in next season’s Champions League.

If Postecoglou wins the Europa League, he might even have a statue built, according to Tim Sherwood.

However, in order to be triumphant in Europe, Spurs need to first get past Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals.

Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Carlton Cole has been discussing Spurs’ crunch European tie, and he’s shared some advice ahead of this game.

How Tottenham can beat Bodo/Glimt

Cole shared a left-field tactic that could help Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt here.

The pundit says that Spurs should play their younger players in the away leg, claiming that these players are sharper, therefore, they will be better on the astroturf surface.

“I’d advise them to play their younger players,” Cole said.

“Why?” The host asked.

Because they’re better on astro,” Cole said.

“You reckon?” The host queried.

“Yeah,’ Cole said.

“I reckon younger players are better on astro because they can move better, they’re sharper. I think age plays a factor in this tie.

“I’m not just saying that age in general, of course age in general does, but I don’t think experience has any use on Astro. It’s a different game. It’s a different game. I’m telling you.

“That is out of the box, Coley. That’s Carlton Cole out of the box,” The host said.

Bodo/Glimt’s home record in Europe

Bodo/Glimt are one of the great underdog stories in European football this season, and, as Cole says, their home advantage is something they seriously make count.

Bodo/Glimt don’t make life easy for their opponents, not only is their artificial surface strange to play on, the Arctic level temperatures are not for the feint hearted either.

The numbers show that Bodo/Glimt are no joke at home.

Bodo/Glimt have beat the likes of Lazio, FC Twente and Porto at home this season, and they even ran Arsenal close a few years ago.

This will not be a walk in the park for Tottenham, and, as Cole says, Spurs may be wise to try something different in this away leg as they try to salvage something from what has been a pitiful season for the north London club.

How Leeds and Burnley have now secured millions of pounds for the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham after promotion secured

How Leeds and Burnley have now secured millions of pounds for the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham after promotion secured - TBR Football
Description

Leeds and Burnley have now managed to shake off Sheffield United and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

An emphatic 6-0 win over Stoke on Easter Monday saw Leeds return to the Premier League after two seasons in the Championship, while a 2-1 win for Burnley over Sheffield United secured an immediate return for the Clarets, who suffered relegation under Vincent Kompany last term.

Scott Parker has already secured millions for Tottenham in getting Burnley promoted, triggering the permanent signing of Marcus Edwards, which lands Spurs some cash due to a sell-on clause.

Now, Burnley – and Leeds – have earned Tottenham and the other 19 Premier League clubs some additional cash after winning promotion.

Parachute payments now divided up between Premier League sides

As you may already know, parachute payments exist to help clubs who have been relegated from the Premier League cope with the signifiant loss in revenue from broadcasting deals, with payments made across three years.

However, there is now a surplus of cash after Leeds – who tried to hire Arne Slot – and Burnley went up, as neither side have been in the Championship for those three years of parachute payments.

On Monday, Football finance expert Kieran Maguire wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “When Leicester and Southampton were relegated in 2022/23 and promoted the following season £102m in parachute payments were saved…these savings have been split between Premier League clubs.

“Should Burnley and Leeds be promoted today then a further £51m will be saved…this will also be divided between PL clubs.”

Maguire added: “Instead of receiving parachute payments of £35m and £16m next season Burnley and Leeds will both be picking up £110m plus in the Premier League. The parachute payments not being paid out will be divided by the 20 PL clubs.”

How much each Premier League clubs receives

It means each Premier League side involved in the 2024/25 campaign will receive £2.55m each after Leeds and Burnley were promoted, on top of the £5.1m Leicester and Southampton earned them, as aforesaid.

Of course, in the grand scheme of modern day football in the Premier League, £2.55m is not a great deal of money, but it is sure to be a welcome boost to all 20 clubs who may not have been expecting a minor financial boost.

There is – however – the moral argument of this cash trickling down and being spread between Championship clubs, who are in greater need of the money than those in the Premier League.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur would consider selling Pedro Porro for the right price this summer, TBR Football can exclusively reveal.

Porro started his journey in English football with Manchester City in 2019, before he then returned to the Premier League with Tottenham four years later.

Now, the Spaniard has amassed 46 appearances for Ange Postecoglou in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists from right-back.

Porro has been an ever-present for Spurs in an injury-hit season, but his spot is now being targeted by Djed Spence.

Spence made the most of his opportunity at left-back whilst Destiny Udogie was injured in recent months and he’s now in contention to start on either side of Postecoglou’s back line.

Tottenham ready to sell Pedro Porro to fund summer transfers

That being said, TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Spurs would entertain the possibility of selling Porro for more than £50m this summer.

As mentioned, Spurs have seen Spence emerge as a true option to be first choice this season and Tottenham’s hierarchy are now looking at their budgets.

Tottenham have been wise with their financial arrangements, but like most Premier League clubs they are always considering PSR and Porro could be an option to sell as a result.

Spurs are looking to bolster their squad in almost all areas and to do so they will likely need to cover their incoming purchases with a sale or two.

Porro was an option for Real Madrid along with Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, with the Galaticos ultimately opting for the Liverpool full-back.

However, TBR can confirm that there is interest in Porro — who has emerged as one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League.

Man City interested in Pedro Porro return

Man City have kept tabs on Porro’s progress and are in need of a new right-back to replace Kyle Walker this summer.

Porro failed to make a senior appearance during his time at the Etihad before being sold to Sporting CP.

And Pep Guardiola’s side have also held talks with another former academy star in the shape of Jeremie Frimpong.

But in terms of Porro’s future, Juventus and Bayern Munich are also believed to see the Spaniard as a real option for their respective projects.

Jamie O’Hara says Ange Postecoglou kept making one ‘excuse’ at Tottenham and that’s why he hasn’t been sacked

Tottenham Hotspur have lost another game in the Premier League this season.

Spurs have been shocking since the start of this campaign. Every fan expected to see some improvement under Ange Postecoglou in his second season, but that hasn’t happened.

The North Londoners crashed out of both domestic cup competitions, and they have lost 18 games in the Premier League so far, which is simply not good enough.

Daniel Levy, however, has still not sacked Postecoglou yet, and Jamie O’Hara thinks he knows the real reason why.

Jamie O’Hara says one ‘excuse’ has saved Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham job

Postecoglou is very fortunate to have not lost his job at Tottenham.

Levy is one of the most ruthless chairmen around, and he has sacked managers at Spurs for far less over the last two decades.

Postecoglou has suffered 18 defeats in the Premier League, and there are still five games left to be played. There’s every chance that number will go up.

Many Spurs fans want Postecoglou gone, but it is looking very likely that he will stay until the end of this season.

O’Hara believes Postecoglou would’ve been sacked a long time ago, but his ‘excuse’ of injuries has kept him in the job until now.

The pundit said on talkSPORT: “That (injuries) was an excuse, mate. He was getting away with that excuse for a long time.

“That kept him in the job. All them players being injured actually kept him in the job. That was the excuse: ‘I’ve got too many injuries’.

“He’s got a full squad to choose from now, and he’s still terrible.”

Tottenham could still break three unwanted records

Tottenham are safe from relegation, so they don’t really have to worry about the Premier League anymore.

The focus is on the Europa League as winning that competition will not just end Spurs’ trophy drought, but it will also open the Champions League doors for them next season.

But, if they continue to lose games in the Premier League, they will be the not-so-proud owners of three unwanted records.

According to the BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella, here are three records Spurs are at risk of in their final five games in the Premier League this season:

That’s how bad Spurs have been this term, and O’Hara may just be right – if there weren’t that many injuries, Levy would’ve sacked Postecoglou a long time ago.

Virgil van Dijk says what he really thinks of Tottenham as a team as Liverpool could beat them to win the title - TBR Football
Description

Ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming contest against Tottenham Hotspur, Virgil van Dijk will be gearing up his teammates not to let complacency set in.

For the Champions League winner personally, he has the chance to become the first Dutch captain to win the Premier League title if Liverpool get the all-important three points on Sunday evening.

Virgil van Dijk will be determined to spearhead his side to a monumental victory as becoming the champions of England in front of the Anfield crowd will be the stuff of dreams for the Reds players.

As the Liverpool fans serenaded Trent Alexander-Arnold against Leicester City after his late winner, there seems to be a real party atmosphere amongst the fanbase as they look set to lift the title.

With Van Dijk rejecting interest from other clubs such as Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Chelsea in favour of signing a two-year contract extension with Liverpool, a title-clinching victory against Tottenham would mean the world to him.

Virgil van Dijk says Tottenham are “very good” ahead of clash vs Liverpool

After Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Leicester, Van Dijk had his say on Tottenham as a team, telling Optus Sport: “Yeah, listen, it’s a great feeling to be in this position, something that we don’t take for granted. It’s been, in my opinion, an outstanding season. Lot of good moments, a lot of good moments actually, a lot of wins and good performances and now we have a chance to finish it on the weekend against a very good Tottenham Hotspur in my opinion.”

Van Dijk also revealed that Liverpool’s games against Tottenham have been testing this campaign: “We played already three times against them this season and every game is very intense and we’ve got a week to prepare, if anything happens on Wednesday, happy days, if not, then we have to finish it off and we’ve got to be at our best to do that and that’ll be our main focus.”

“We still have a big game on the weekend.”

Van Dijk is arguably Liverpool’s most important player and his message to the supporters to flock to Anfield in numbers to watch them lock horns with Tottenham will be heard loud and clear by the fans.

“I encourage everyone, Liverpool fans of course, be there, support us and it’ll be all worth it at the end, we’ve all worked so hard to be in this position throughout the whole season, we’ve been so consistent in the league especially. With the results, with the wins and now we have a big opportunity because it’s an opportunity, nothing else.”

Virgil van Dijk has already said what he could do if Liverpool win the Premier League

Van Dijk revealed he’d let his hair down if Liverpool won another league title back in 2022.

When Gary Neville asked the former Celtic defender to so, he replied: “No no no, I can’t. Maybe when we win another Champions League or Premier League.”
