The Tottenham teammate who reminded Gareth Bale of Ronaldinho in training, his ability was ‘frightening’

During his second spell at Tottenham Hotspur, Garteh Bale revealed the Spurs teammate who reminded him of Ronaldinho in training.

Bale’s return to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 didn’t exactly go to plan as the former Real Madrid star struggled to break back into the team under Jose Mourinho.

The Welsh winger still managed an impressive 16 goals and three assists in 34 appearances for the North London club, which helped them to reach the Carabao Cup final and finish seventh.

During his time at the club, he revealed his teammate who surprised him the most in training, and his ability on the ball was ‘frightening’.

Gareth Bale on Tanguy Ndombele’s ‘frightening ability’ at Tottenham

Gareth Bale named Tanguy Ndombele as his Tottenham teammate whose ability shocked him the most in training.

He admitted that some of the things the Frenchman could do with the ball reminded him of watching legendary Barcelona forward Ronaldinho.

Ndombele was another player whose spell at the North London club didn’t quite hit the heights expected following his then club-record move from Lyon, although his skill levels were undeniable.

Speaking to Sky Sports back in 2021, Bale revealed: “I’d probably have to say Ndombele this season, I hadn’t seen too much of him when I was watching Spurs games the season before and I think he had an adaptation period coming over to England.

“Just seeing what he does in training and on the pitch here, I was very surprised and the ability he has is actually frightening.

“The stuff he does with the ball, it kind of reminds me of something you see Ronaldinho do with the ball and it’s quite nice to watch.”

Tanguy Ndombele failed spell at Tottenham

Ndombele was released from his Tottenham contract in 2023 after failing to break into Ange Postecoglou’s squad, and there being no club willing to buy him.

The Frenchman spent five seasons as a Spurs player, however, he was only kept at the club for two and a half of those seasons before having three different loan spells.

Ndombele managed just 19 goal contributions in 91 matches for the club, which is not a great return for a player who cost Tottenham around £55 million.

Ledley King says Tottenham have a player who’s way bigger than people realise

Tottenham Hotspur have had a bit of a disaster of a season so far.

Spurs sit 13th in the Premier League table, and while they got through in the Europa League in midweek, Ange Postecoglou is still under pressure.

Indeed, there have been calls for Postecoglou to be sacked, while there have been protests against Daniel Levy too.

When there’s that much unrest behind the scenes, you know something isn’t quite right, and Spurs’ season has been a bit all over the place.

However, it hasn’t all be doom and gloom for Tottenham.

Indeed, some of Spurs’ young stars have really stepped up this season.

Archie Gray has earned serious praise this year, while Lucas Bergvall looks like a star in the making.

Speaking on Tottenham’s YouTube channel, Ledley King has been discussing Bergvall, and he says that he’s a big fan of the midfielder.

Interestingly, King also noted that Bergvall is a lot bigger than people realise, stating that his size and physicality doesn’t quite stand out as much as it should.

Lucas Bergvall is bigger than people think

King spoke about Bergvall and his size.

The pundit says that Bergvall is actually a big unit, despite the fact his size doesn’t necessarily stand out so much due to his fantastic technical ability.

“One thing that probably doesn’t stand out is just how big Lucas is and how physical he is. For someone so young he knows how to get stuck in and he has great intensity in terms of his pressing.

“We speak about lifting crowds, he can do that with his pressing, his running, his enthusiasm to win the ball back at times. He can dribble, he can pass, I’ve been really impressed with him.”

How big is Lucas Bergvall?

Bergvall may only be 19, but he is a big lad.

Indeed, Alasdair Gold commented on Bergvall’s size earlier this year after interviewing him in person.

“You can see it. I was waiting after the game and observing the way he was. He looks like a star. Boy band looks, a poster boy of the sport Sweden want him to become,” Gold said.

“He’s a big lad, that’s what I noticed. I’m 6 ft and he’s above that, he’s broad, really physically developed. I noticed that in the game as well, not easily pushed off the ball.”

So, how big is Bergvall?

The Swede stands at 6 ft 2, making him one of the bigger outfield players in the Spurs squad.

That physicality will certainly come in handy in the coming years, and the scary part is, at the age of just 19, he’s not even finished developing physically either.

Bergvall could become an absolute superstar in years to come.

Rio Ferdinand shares what Tottenham star Djed Spence has that he hasn’t ‘seen in a defender for a long time’

Tottenham Hotspur have had a difficult season for the most part, but there have also been several big positives over the past seven months.

It’s clear to see what Ange Postecoglou is trying to do at Tottenham and, when they don’t have multiple key players out injured, they’ve been superb.

In addition, Spurs have some of the best youngsters in the Premier League, and in addition, Djed Spence has well and truly made a name for himself.

Spence’s Tottenham future was uncertain at the start of the season, but he went from the fringes of the team to becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Rio Ferdinand has now spoken about Spence, sharing what he’s seen in the Spurs defender that he hasn’t “seen in a defender for a long time”.

Rio Ferdinand wowed by Djed Spence’s confidence

Ferdinand, speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, spoke of the interview he conducted with Spence that, at the time of writing, was set to come out soon.

The Premier League legend, speaking alongside Joel Beya and guest Joleon Lescott, said the Spurs full-back’s confidence really stood out for him.

“I’ve not seen confidence from a kid like what (Spence has got),” said Ferdinand. “You’ve got to watch this guy when he talks, the confidence.

Lescott then said: “The confidence comes from actually doing it, and what he’s saying, you can then combat it against things that haven’t happened,

“And, as he said, if you look at his 1v1s, how many players going past Djed?”

Ferdinand continued: “That’s what he said he spoke about 1v1s and there was some confidence I ain’t seen in a Defender for a long time.”

Lescott then said: “But it’s true because there would be footage of it happening if it wasn’t true, do you know what I mean? If what he’s saying wasn’t true there’d be evidence of it.”

Ferdinand recently spoke highly of Spurs cult hero Aaron Lennon, choosing him as the speed option as he designed his ultimate Champions League footballer.

How Djed Spence has turned his Tottenham career around

Spence went from being an apparent near-certainty to be sold in the summer to securing himself a new Spurs contract until the summer of 2028.

The £20million man worked especially hard in pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and forced his way into Postecoglou’s plans.

In February, Postecoglou revealed how Spence “just kept going” when other players could have just cut their losses and moved on.

The Tottenham boss said this made a real impression on everyone around him, which enabled him to get the opportunity to get to where he is now.

“We knew that certainly there was a player there, but a lot of it had to be up to Djed himself,” said the Spurs boss.

“And he’s just worked really awfully hard and stayed patient through that early period.

“You know, it could have been easy for him to get frustrated when he wasn’t playing a lot. There was opportunities for him to play and he wasn’t getting a run.

“I think looking at his attitude through that, I think there was real growth for him personally in that maybe in previous years, he might have sort of given up the fight and said, ‘you know, right, I don’t fit in here, let’s just move on,’ but he just kept going.

“That makes an impression on people around him, me, his team-mates and, he earned his shot at it and he’s just grown since then.”

Tottenham Hotspur are in Europa League action on Thursday night as they play host to AZ Alkmaar in their last-16 second leg.

Spurs are trailing 1-0 in the tie due to Lucas Bergvall’s unfortunate own goal at the AFAS Stadium a week ago.

Ange Postecoglou has seldom been able to call upon his strongest XI, but the injury crisis at Tottenham is showing signs of easing.

The Spurs boss has now spoken about the players he wants to see step up against AZ, including one who was “enormous” in the first leg.

Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Guglielmo Vicario are the ‘four leaders’ at Tottenham

At his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou was asked how much he would be relying on experience against AZ.

Alasdair Gold mentioned Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Son Heung-min, and Postecoglou said he’d also include Guglielmo Vicario.

“Yeah I think so, but we haven’t had them a lot,” he told football.london about the outfield trio, before mentioning the £17million keeper.

“I would include Vicario in that as well. I think Vic was enormous for us in the first leg and he was big for us on the weekend as well.

“You want your big, experienced players to perform in these games, for sure.

“We have relied a lot on our younger players who have really progressed really well.

“But I guess a night like tomorrow night, having the likes of Romero, Maddison, Vicario and Sonny out there, they are our four leaders.

“I don’t think we’ve had them on the park at all this year or very little anyway.

“Having all four of them, the whole leadership group out there, will definitely be beneficial.”

Tottenham team news v AZ

Tottenham remain without Dejan Kulusevski due to a foot injury.

Meanwhile, Kevin Danso missed training on Wednesday and is expected to be out of action until after the international break.

Radu Dragusin is out for the remainder of the season, while Richarlison will not feature until at least the start of April despite returning to training.

Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended following a booking in last week’s first leg in the Netherlands.

In terms of positive news, Ben Davies is back after a recent knock, while Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are both available to start for Spurs against Alkmaar.

Title-winning manager now seriously wants to sign £13m striker from Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur should be in a good position to seriously strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s squad this summer.

If reports are accurate, Tottenham are in a very strong financial position and funds will be available to Johan Lange and his transfer team.

Although, it would seem fair to question whether this current set-up of decision-makers are capable of executing the kind of window that Spurs need in order to improve.

Tottenham bought good players in January: Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, but none have dramatically improved their starting eleven.

Tottenham staff think Tel will succeed in N17 with time, but from the outside looking in it seems as if Spurs once again spent considerable money on buying players who are par for the course, so to speak.

River Plate are determned to sign Alejo Veliz before Club World Cup

That being said, Tottenham might have an opportunity to recoup funds from one deal that doesn’t currently look like it’ll work out.

Spurs signed Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central in 2023, spending £13m on the young striker with a view to the future.

But at 21-years-old, it seems unlikely that Veliz will ever be able to provide proper competition for Dominic Solanke, even if he is making progress out on loan in Spain.

However, Argentinian source River Noticias are now reporting that River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is determined to sign Veliz ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup.

Veliz is said to be of ‘great interest’ to River and Gallardo believes that the striker could be the missing piece for his side up top.

Of course, from a Spurs point of view, there would surely be some interest in negotiating a deal given that the striker currently seems quite far away from first team plans.

Alejo Veliz exit could pave the way for Dane Scarlett

According to the report, Postecoglou will assess Veliz in pre-season as things stand, along with other players who will return from loan.

Right now Spurs’ striker hierarchy has Solanke at the top, with all of Richarlison, Tel and Son Heung-min playing minutes centrally too.

And whilst Richarlison might leave Tottenham, the club does have plans to promote another youngster next season.

Postecoglou wants to use Dane Scarlett more often, and it’s therefore hard to see how Veliz would fit into these plans and get the minutes he needs to continue progressing.

Therefore, River’s interest could be very welcome – should the reports be accurate.

Tottenham fans jealous of ‘class’ announcement made by Man United ahead of Europa League clash

Tottenham and Manchester United are both involved in crucial UEFA Europa League clashes on Thursday evening.

Spurs must overturn a 1-0 deficit in north London against AZ Alkmaar to progress into the quarter-finals, while the Red Devils need to score at least once at Old Trafford after a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in the first leg.

Ahead of crucial clashes such as these, fans can often play their part even before a ball has been kicked through the medium of welcoming the team bus, or creating an intimating display as the players walk onto the pitch.

In regards to that latter point, Manchester United have now agreed to do something at the request of fan group TRA (The Red Army) – which Tottenham supporters are very jealous of.

Tottenham fans applaud Manchester United for working with TRA

Ahead of Manchester United vs Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have announced that a “smoke pyro display” will happen just before the players walk out, as well as a huge banner across the Stretford End at the request of the TRA – who are also funding it.

As Tottenham fans continue to protest against Daniel Levy and ENIC on a weekly basis, this act from Manchester United has evoked jealousy from some Spurs supporters on X (previously known as Twitter).

Firstly, one Tottenham fan wrote: “Man United. Responding to fan groups, supporting them and taking action that will genuinely generate atmosphere. Class. A reminder ours no longer work with the club due to frustration and dead ends.”

A second Spurs supporter joked that things must truly be “bad” in N17 if Manchester United are setting an example, posting: “You know it’s bad when United are the benchmark we aren’t meeting.”

A third fan posted quite the opposite, calling Manchester United a “proper club” whereas Spurs are “not” that.

They wrote: “Because United are a proper club and we’re not.”

A fourth supporter seemed to show jealously of the fact Manchester United are at least trying new things under the ownership of INEOS, simply writing: “Could’ve been us.”

Furthermore, a fifth fan went into detail about how Tottenham could arrange a similar spectacle, saying: “The way to do it would be, have a small area that is first come first serve right behind both goals – the fans will be rowdy and loud and the atmosphere electric.”

Last but not least, a sixth Tottenham fan made a good point, suggesting there is financial motivation for Levy to call on supporters to arrive early and create a fierce atmosphere, where they would have longer to purchase club items, posting: “Would’ve thought Levy would be all over this, encouraging the fans to arrive early to the ground. Ching ching of the tills.”

Daniel Levy – at least – learned from 2024 mishap at Tottenham this week

Earlier this week, Tottenham announced season ticket news ahead of next season.

Back in March 2024, Spurs fans were left furious after seeing a 6% increase on ticket prices, which were by no means justified by any success on the pitch.

This time around – however – Levy has opted not to increase ticket prices any further, which is at least one positive development in N17.

James Maddison names the two Tottenham players who he actually does not want to see criticised this season

James Maddison is often the centre of attention when it comes to all things Tottenham Hotspur.

Being one of Tottenham’s senior players, their primary creative force alongside Dejan Kulusevski and one of England’s most high-profile players, Maddison is often in the news.

Just recently, Roy Keane blasted Maddison and doubted whether his return from injury would massively benefit Spurs as the Irishman questioned his consistency — with the silky technician going on to aim a dig at the veteran with his bold celebration in a 1-0 win against Manchester United.

The United legend’s controversial comments were agreed with by some, with Simon Jordan calling Maddison a “flaky” player and going out of his way to state that no team will win “anything meaningful” with him in the side.

For James Maddison, such opinions surrounding him would be hurtful considering how much of a success he has been in the Premier League since his time at Leicester City.

But football is a game of a opinions and the 28-year-old will be accustomed to being in the spotlight.

James Maddison says he’d rather get criticised over Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall

What will matter most to the former Leicester midfielder is how Ange Postecoglou and his teammates view him, with Mathys Tel lauding Maddison recently.

The Englishman will perhaps also be motivated to silence his critics, with even Mark Schwarzer taking aim at Maddison’s form at Tottenham.

Maddison was quizzed about how he feels about often being slated by pundits in particular and the Tottenham attacker revealed he would rather take the hits over young players like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

The FA Cup winner told Sky Sports: “Yeah but that’s okay, I’d rather that than them talk about Archie, Lucas, the young lads, I don’t mind taking the heat a little. I’m big enough and ugly enough now to take the hits and take the criticism because I know what I’m capable of, I know what I can do, I know my personal level.”

Previously as well, Maddison lauded Bergvall and Gray’s work ethic after Spurs’ 3-2 against Hoffenheim in the Europa League.

The Lilywhites star also revealed that while it is easy to slate this Tottenham side as a whole, they are working their socks off behind the scenes and are far from happy from the season they have had so far.

“And what people don’t see is what we do behind the scenes and how much we’re trying to improve and how much we work and it’s very cheap to go sit and talk and criticise but in training today, the standard was unbelievable, the lads are working really hard because we drew at home to Bournemouth last week and the lads are not happy. So, they don’t see it hurts us as well, you know when we’re not doing well in the league.”

“But no, I feel good, I pretty sharp, really looking forward to Thursday and beyond, try to finish the season special as a team, try and finish the season strong personally, I can still have a very good season in terms of goals and assists and try to look for the positives and try to spread that through the dressing room instead of focusing on the negatives and the doom and gloom of the league position.”

What Maddison was doing at Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall’s age

Gray and Bergvall drew praise from Pedro Porro as the young duo have impressed at Tottenham this season.

Both players, aged 19 have been thrown into the deep end by starting regularly for a struggling Spurs side and come out with flying colours.

Perhaps one reason why Maddison seems protective of Gray and Bergvall is because when he was at the same age, the Spurs attacker was playing for Coventry City in the Championship instead of playing regular Premier League football.

The fact that Gray and Bergvall look as polished as they do in the English top-flight speaks volumes of the quality and mentality both youngsters possess and they should certainly not be criticised as they have fared excellently in a variety of roles.

James Maddison reveals what Ange Postecoglou keeps telling the Tottenham squad now

Tottenham Hotspur have endured what has to be considered their worst season in over a decade.

Spurs are rooted in the bottom-half of the Premier League table, and they’re out of both domestic cup competitions already.

However, all is not lost for Spurs just yet.

Indeed, Tottenham are still in the Europa League, and triumph in Europe will lead to Champions League qualification for Spurs and the first piece of silverware in almost 20 years.

Tottenham have been backed to win the Europa League, and according to James Maddison, speaking to Sky Sports, Ange Postecoglou has constantly been telling the squad that this season can still be special if they win a European trophy.

What Ange Postecoglou keeps telling the Tottenham squad

Maddison spoke about the message Postecoglou keeps sending to his players.

According to the midfielder, Postecoglou keeps telling the squad that this can be a special season if they win the Europa League.

Postecoglou is under pressure at Tottenham right now, but a Europa League win could well save his skin.

“The manager always speaks about how it can still be special for us if we win that (Europa League), and we’re in a good position to do that,” Maddison said.

“Listen, we’ve got work to do in the second leg but we know we’re capable of that and we can turn it around, there’s no one in there doubting the fact that we can do that. But we have to go and do it, talk is one thing, we have to go and win the game and turn over the defeat of the first leg. You win that and you pick up a bit of momentum, you’re in the quarter-final and then it can still be a special season for us. That’s what we’re hoping for and that’s what we’re striving for.”

Tottenham’s route to the Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur are having a poor season, but there is reason to believe they could win the Europa League.

Indeed, Spurs’ run to the Europa League final is smoother than one may expect, and they would likely be favourites for most of these ties.

Of course, before Spurs think about any of that, Tottenham need to get past AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening after losing the first leg 1-0.

Glenn Hoddle reckons Tottenham will be happy with just a one goal deficit heading into the second leg against the Dutch side, but they do have an uphill task this week.

A Europa League win is the only thing Tottenham can salvage from what has been a true disaster of a season so far.

Bayern Munich are set to offer another player to Tottenham this summer along with Mathys Tel

Picture
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have built a fantastic relationship with Bayern Munich in recent years.

The North Londoners sold Harry Kane in a huge deal to the German giants in 2023. Six months later, they sent Eric Dier to the Allianz Arena too.

Daniel Levy used the same relationship to secure a deal for Mathys Tel in the winter window. The Frenchman joined on loan until the end of the season, and Spurs have an option to make that move permanent this summer.

When those talks happen in July, Tottenham are set to be presented with a chance to sign another talented Bayern Munich attacker.

Bayern Munich set to offer Kingsley Coman to Tottenham during Mathys Tel talks

Kingsley Coman’s future has been up in the air since last summer.

The Frenchman has been a fantastic player for Bayern over the years, but he is no longer a guaranteed starter under Vincent Kompany.

The German giants were ready to offload Coman in each of the last two windows, and he was linked with several clubs as well.

But, no move materialised in the end.

Tottenham have been linked with Coman ahead of the summer window, as have Newcastle United and Liverpool among other clubs.

Now, GiveMeSport have claimed that Bayern are set to offer Coman to Spurs when the two clubs sit down for talks over Tel this summer.

It has been claimed that Spurs, and other clubs who want him, will be given an opportunity to sign the France international for as little as £30 million once the window opens.

The problem Tottenham could face if they try to sign Coman

When fit, Coman is one of the best wingers in Europe.

The Frenchman can play comfortably on either wing and has the ability to cause problems to every full-back on the planet. Coman is still only 28 as well, which means he has a few more years left in the tank.

Signing the Bayern attacker won’t be a bad move, but there is a huge stumbling block in front of Spurs if they are to pursue a move for him – his wages.

The report claims that Coman earns around £275,000-a-week at Bayern, which is more than any Spurs player right now.

So, if Tottenham are to sign the winger, he will have to lower his wages.

Finance insider issues verdict on Everton matching Tottenham deal as Dan Friedkin smashes £50m PSR barrier

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Even with his background as a Hollywood movie producer, Dan Friedkin could barely have scripted a better start to life at Everton following his takeover from Farhad Moshiri.

When Friedkin was finally handed the keys to Goodison Park after the protracted deal process to end all protracted deal processes, Everton were 16th in the Premier League table and flirting with administration.

The Friedkin Group wasted no time in making hires at the front and back of house, with the new American owners keen to breathe fresh air into the corporate structure left by Farhad Moshiri.

David Moyes replaced Sean Dyche in the dugout, while Kevin Thelwell has now announced he will be stepping down as sporting director in the summer.

Perhaps most significantly of all, highly rated Leeds United executive Angus Kinnear has been named as CEO. He too will take office after the conclusion of the season.

Kinnear’s primary responsibility will be to manage the transition to life at Bramley Moore Dock, ensuring the club is in the best position to benefit commercially from their new home.

Farhad Moshiri has briefed that Everton stand to earn £43.7m per year through the turnstiles at the 52,888-seater stadium, which is almost three times what the Toffees earn at Goodison Park.

For a club whose narrative has been driven by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), debt and cash flow issues in recent years, the stadium will be transformative.

‘Transformative’ – Everton fans will have to get used to hearing that word in the next few months.

Dan Friedkin is extraordinarily wealthy independently, one of the richest private individuals in the sport, in fact. But at Everton, PSR is a brace that will limit how much he can flex his muscles financially.

Increasing revenue therefore is key, and the new stadium will be both a massive matchday income generator and beachhead for outsized commercial growth.

Everton’s revenue growth rate has been slower than many of their peers in recent years. Their stasis was compounded when Alisher Usmanov was forced to end his sponsorship deals with the club.

In terms of the profit-and-loss account too, Friedkin has inherited a basket case after the Moshiri regime were swept up in the Premier League’s wage and transfer space race without the turnover to match.

The existing administration has done well to taper losses in recent years. There has been far more restraint in the transfer market and, after passing PSR in 2023-24, the immediate threat has passed.

But even with the move to Bramley Moore Dock now in sharp focus, The Friedkin Group are not ready to turn on the afterburners just yet. Blockbuster signings will have to wait until things have stabilised.

Part of the reason the Toffees are in that position is because of the stadium debt, which has come from a syndicate of commercial lenders whose M.O is to charge dizzying interest rates.

Now, Friedkin has refinanced the debt with a £350m arrangement steered by JPMorgan. The new deal stretches repayment over a longer term at a more manageable rate.

With PSR set to stay for at least another season, ensuring interest repayments didn’t eat into their bottom line too much and effectively wipe out the Bramley Moore Dock boost was an A1 priority for Friedkin.

Incidentally, TBR Football understands that Everton voted in favour of keeping PSR for another year.

Some reports have suggested that Everton could save as much as £50m per season in interest payments under the new deal, though those TBR has spoken to suggest that figure may be slightly overblown.

But the new arrangement will relieve the pressure on Merseyside – that is not in doubt.

New Bramley Moore Dock debt deal lets Everton maximise revenue at new stadium

In some cases, the loans from Rights and Media Funding, MSP Sports Capital and a handful of opaque overseas lenders were struck at interest rates of 15 per cent.

For context, SONIA, an index that reflects average interest rates across the UK economy, is currently closer to 4.5 per cent.

If the new syndicated agreement with JPMorgan is in that region, Everton will go from paying somewhere in the region of £40-50m in annual interest to somewhere closer to £15m.

Speaking exclusively to TBR Football, Liverpool University football finance lecturer Kieran Maguire extolled the virtues of the new arrangement.

“They would certainly have been paying premium rates to the previous lenders,” said the Price of Football author.

“If you take a look at the amount of interest capitalised and added onto the cost of Bramley Moore Dock, they will make significant savings.

“The Friedkin Group have a much higher credit rating than Everton did under Farhad Moshiri. They have a broader asset base and are less reliant on external assistance. As a result, Everton will be able to surf the wave in terms of paying a lower rate.

“The stadium is now online, so those interest costs will be charged against profits instead of being capitalised.

From a net point of view – which is the way you’ve got to look at it – revenue from hospitality, advertising, naming rights and so on less the extra maintenance and interest costs, they will be looking at a positive.

“Anything that can be achieved in reducing that cost base and benefit from The Friedkin Group’s high reputation in the world of debt finance can be significantly beneficial to Everton.”

Before he finally landed on Everton, Dan Friedkin explored the possibility of buying into Tottenham.

There is trend here, as MSP Sports Capital – who were also in the running to buy the Toffees at one stage – were also interested in Spurs at one stage.

The appeal of the North London club is clear. The stadium is a money-printing machine whose effects Everton want to mirror with their own new waterfront home.

What’s more, Daniel Levy managed to secure the best possible terms on the loans he took out to build the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Most are fixed-term and in the 2-3 per cent bracket. That is unthinkable in in the current macroeconomic environment, as Maguire explains.

“If we look at what we’ve seen at Spurs, matchday revenue is up by £90m, commercial revenue is up by £100m.

“Against that, they have higher depreciation costs, which are a non-cash expense and don’t count towards PSR, so I don’t get too worked up about them.

“Spurs have been absolutely brilliant at borrowing on a long-term basis and at the right time when debt capital was extremely cheap. They are only paying about £25m per year in interest.

“They have set a high watermark that Everton won’t be able to achieve, but on a net basis we will be looking at an eight-figure sum.”

Everton minority shareholders lose value after Dan Friedkin takeover

The structure of Friedkin’s takeover saw new shares created, with loans converted to equity to meet new Premier League rules on Associated Party Transactions.

A downside of that has been that the club’s minority shareholders – who are mostly fans – have had their stake in Everton diluted, which in turn has decreased the value of their shares.

Some investors have spoken about losing hundreds of thousands of pounds in value. To them, the Friedkin reign and move to Bramley Moore Dock has been coloured by the makeup of the deal.

TBR has spoken to many who are sympathetic to the minority shareholders, while others said that they buyers were aware of the risks associated with holding a tiny minority stake in the club.

Ultimately, the shares arguably have no inherent value. Everton don’t pay dividends to shareholders and, given that the shares carry next to no voting rights, the market for buyers is extremely limited.

This is not a situation unique to Everton.

Tottenham also have a number of shares owned predominantly by fans who invested in the club when they were publicly listed, as do several other clubs in the English pyramid.
