Description

Ange Postecoglou said 'rest is going to be as important as anything else' as Heung-Min Son fights to overcome a nagging foot injury.

The skipper has missed our last two games against Wolves and Eintracht Frankfurt. Indeed, he didn't travel out with the squad to Germany on Wednesday for Thursday night's UEFA Europa League quarter-final, second leg at Deutsche Bank Park.

Forest are next up in the Premier League as we return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday evening (8pm UK).

Speaking to the media at Hotspur Way on Saturday morning, Ange confirmed Sonny would still be out, and was asked how long the issue might keep him out of action.

"He's been dealing with a foot problem for a while, so now is as good a time as any to give him the right time to to get over it," said Ange. "He'll definitely miss Monday.

"It's been something he's been dealing with for a little while and it got to the point where not only it wasn't improving, but it was deteriorating, and it's one of these things where rest is going to be as important as anything else with that kind of injury. So, we'll give him that time. Sonny is the kind of guy who always wants to train, so we'll put him on ice for the next few days and see how he responds to that."

Team news | Heung-Min Son still out, James Maddison a doubt, everyone else 'should be okay' - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Ange Postecoglou reports that Heung-Min Son will remain sidelined for our Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on Monday evening (8pm UK).

The skipper didn't travel with the squad to Germany on Wednesday for our UEFA Europa League quarter-final, second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night as he battles to overcome a foot issue.

James Maddison is a doubt after being clattered by Kaua Santos for our match-winning penalty in Frankfurt. The midfielder tried to continue, but was forced off after Dominic Solanke slotted the spot-kick - the decisive moment to take us through to the semi-finals.

Speaking to the media at Hotspur Way on Saturday morning, Ange said: "It's fair to say he'll probably be a bit sore, so he's probably a doubt for Monday. The rest of the group, again, they all worked hard, so they'll be sore, but they should all be okay for Monday night. Sonny will still be out. He's been dealing with a foot problem for a while, so now is as good a time as any to give him the right time to to get over it. He'll definitely miss Monday. Everyone else should be okay."

Ange later suggested there will be changes to the line-up against Forest, adding: "It's fair to say it's been challenging, but I think part of that challenge is the rotation in the team and, to be fair, it's going to be similar on Monday night, and we're going to have to make five or six changes to the team because we want to make sure everyone is in the right space."

Presser Points | Spurs vs Villa (WSL) | Robert Vilahamn - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Robert Vilahamn spoke to the media at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon, ahead of Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League clash against Aston Villa at Brisbane Road.

Here’s what he had to say…

First up, the latest team news…

"She (Bethany England) has trained well this week, so she's back running and, hopefully, she's in the squad for this weekend, which is very good news for us. Charli (Grant) came back from her national team with a minor issue, so she's unlikely to be involved this weekend. Luana (Buhler), as well, came back with an injury so she's out for the upcoming games and perhaps all four games, while Hayley (Raso) has a quad issue which means she can't play anymore this season."

On the potential of having Bethany back…

“If you start with the goalscoring perspective, how she is as a footballer, I think we’re looking quite good when we play right now, we’re creating a lot of chances and she’s probably one of the best finishers in this league, so we’re really happy to have her back. But when you look at her leadership, how she is as a person and leader, having her in the locker room, on the training pitch, around the players, she has a big impact on the others, so I’m very happy to have her back.”

On performances before the international break…

“We had a good game against Man City about four games ago, we created some chances, but we came away with no points, which was frustrating. We had a really poor game against Brighton, which made us have a clear meeting about what we need to aim for in the last games. We want the identity, how we want to play, do we want to create more goal chances? How are we going to score more goals or play our style? West Ham was a good step, we lost that game, but we created chances and looked the way we want to look. Leicester was quite a dominant game, we should’ve scored more goals and should’ve won that game but, still, we are creating chances and playing the style we want. Now we need to make sure we score more goals, that’s been one of the headlines this last three weeks, we’ve trained on how to enter the box, how to score, where should we score from and how we can build self-confidence in the players.”

On the target for the remainder of the campaign…

“We have four more games to gain as many points as possible, to make sure the result in the table is as good as possible, but the main thing for me is to keep growing the way we want to play, to make sure we keep being more dominant, to see the progress in how we play. Next year will be the third year, and I really want to make sure we can compete and close the gap that we spoke about, that we haven’t done this season. So, the performance is important for me, to see we can take steps, even if we have not won for a few games, or a lot of games, actually.”

On Aston Villa and Rachel Daly…

“When you look at their players, especially their attacking players, they have a lot of them, and Rachel Daly is obviously a really good striker. The main thing we want to do is keep them away from our goal by having a really high press, make sure they don’t get close to the goal, that’s the best way to do it. We had a really good game against Man City at home where Bunny Shaw didn’t have any chances, so hopefully our press can be really good and we can have the ball more than them. Then, we won’t need to worry too much about them (Daly and the attacking players).”

On Eleanor Heeps signing a new deal…

“I think it’s extremely good. It’s showing we can develop our players to take the next step. When I came here she was a very shy goalkeeper that didn’t really take the plays that she needed, but she grew in the first year with Perry (Suckling) as her goalkeeper coach, and this year with Chris (Williams). She has performed very well in the league and in the cups this season, she was in the England Under-23s squad last time, her journey is very interesting. Goalkeeper is a tricky one to sign and find all over the world, so when you find one in house where you can develop and take steps - that’s brilliant. So, it’s really good teamwork from her and the staff here at the Club.”

On using the upcoming Euros as motivation…

“We always try to use the Euros and whatever national team commitments they have because I think that’s a big thing for Women’s footballers, to try and make sure they can compete in those situations. Obviously, we work and compete here, and I want to make sure we take steps with the players we have, make sure we take the right decisions in the summer window and what we’re going to look like next season. So, the players need to compete here, show what they can do for this Club. In that, we’re also going to make sure they come prepared for the national team, but we’re focusing on ourselves, focusing on how we can improve and be even stronger for next season. But the national team is a bonus for them, and we’ll make sure they’re prepared for that.”

On injuries suffered during the international break…

“When you look at injuries and national team breaks, obviously it is higher risk because people are all of a sudden changing habits. They’re flying to different time zones, working with new coaches, it’s really hard, but that’s a part of the game.

We try to collaborate more and more with the national teams to make sure they have a really good transition, sometimes you pick up injuries, but I think we need to keep working with the collaboration, to make sure we load the players in the right way when they go away and when they come back. Sometimes they go away and play on artificial grass, it's extremely hard to find the right balance, obviously it’s a clear pattern that you pick up some more injuries on international break. It's also part of the game, so we just need to adapt to it.”

On the impact of Natalia Arroyo…

“I think they’ve had a tough year with changing managers. They have some really top players, adding a new coach, trying to find new ways to win, then being in a relegation battle is probably not what they expected. In the last two games, I can see she has changed the style a bit to make sure they get the points they need. They had big success against Liverpool, so you can tell she’s intelligent to find ways to get the points, she’s done a good job and It’s going to be an interesting game. Obviously, they still are a few points above Crystal Palace, so let’s see if they more play for the points or if they play for their identity.”

On the positives to take from the season so far…

“The positives are not always the results in the games, it's how we’ve developed through the squad, the squad development, staff development, Club development, so if I look at the squad, the potential is much higher this season than last season. We also signed new staff members and found new roles that make us stronger going into next season. I think we saw a few things that weren’t professional enough on the Women’s side which we are now improving on, making sure we have the standards really high for next season. I’ve learnt so much about the top teams, to make sure we don’t step away too much from our identity, to find the right chemistry between the players, to find the identity to play the way we want to play and I think the third season will be much better. I’m a big fan of learning from mistakes, so using information from these first two seasons to make sure we are prepared for the third season.”

Team news | England could return for Villa clash - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Bethany England has returned to training and could be involved in our Barclays Women’s Super League clash with Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon (2pm UK).

Our captain and leading goalscorer this term picked up a quad injury last month, forcing her to miss our home fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion followed by our trips to West Ham United and Leicester City in her period on the sidelines.

However, following the two-week break from action, Bethany has since returned to training and our Head Coach revealed that she could be back in contention for this Sunday’s game at Brisbane Road.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, he said: "She has trained well this week, so she's back running and, hopefully, she's in the squad for this weekend, which is very good news for us."

Unfortunately, Robert reported that Hayley Raso, Luana Buhler and Charlotte Grant are set to miss the encounter with Villa.

Hayley and Luana have both picked up knocks and are expected to be on the sidelines for an extended period, with the former set to miss the rest of the campaign while he hopes to have the Switzerland international back before the end of the season.

He also confirmed that ‘Charli’ is expected to be unavailable for Sunday after suffering a small issue while on international duty with Australia.

He added: "Charli came back from her national team with a minor issue, so she unlikely to be involved this weekend.

"Luana, as well, came back with an injury so she's out for the first upcoming games and perhaps all four games, while Hayley has a quad issue which means she can't play anymore this season."

Ange on the maturity of the team...

"I'm delighted with many things, super proud of the lads. Going away from home, a quarter-final against a very good side, you know you're going to have to work really hard, be really disciplined and we needed to score. We had to show the quality we had as well. To a man, I just thought they were outstanding, so proud of them. In such a big game, they delivered a performance and it means we're through to a semi-final. I think over the two legs we deserved to go through. It could have been all over in the first leg but we earned the right to be in the semi."

Ange on if he has a 'sixth sense' our name could be on the trophy...

"No, I don’t think that way. From our perspective, we’ve had a difficult season and I think there’s some reasoning behind that was pretty evident that when we've got our strongest team out there, a lot of things we’ve suffered with this year, I’m sure we wouldn’t have. The spine of our team, at times we've been missing Vicario, Romero, van de Ven, Bentancur, Solanke, all missing at different times this year. We've got the whole group. It's not just them, it's the whole group together. We know that we can be a team that's pretty compelling against anybody. We're in the final four now, so we've given ourselves a chance."

Ange on James Maddison's fitness...

"He is fine. Unbelievable courage in that moment to put his body on the line knowing full well that he was going to get a pretty severe knock and I was surprised it wasn’t a red card. Super courageous from him. He is sore, but I’m sure that has all been numb knowing that he has helped us progress to the semi."

Ange on the VAR call for the penalty...

"We can be facetious about that, but I thought it was a clear penalty. I’m not sure why it needed VAR. When a player wins the ball and gets cleaned out... if that was a defender it would probably have been a red card. It’s definitely a penalty. I don’t think it needed a review. Again, I think we got what we deserved."

Ange on his confidence on the squad being able to go all the way...

"Look, we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. We’re in the semi-final and will play a difficult opponent in the semi, but it’s not about my belief in the team. What’s more important is the belief the team has had because after a season like ours, it would be very easy for the players and staff, they could have left me in a pretty vulnerable place in terms of them splintering, but I’ve never felt that (even) with all the noise around our season. They’ve been so united in believing in what we’re trying to achieve here and that is what gave me heart all along that if we got our own slice of luck in terms of getting some players back that I really believed this team could achieve. That is what keeps driving me. It isn’t so much my belief in them, it’s their belief in what we’re doing and both players and staff have been outstanding. I am the front man for it but they take responsibility for it as well and all my decisions and everything I do, but not at any stage have I felt they lost any belief in me or what we’re doing. That is crucial when you’re having a difficult season, but there is also a season of opportunity there."

Ange on... Ange...

"I think I said yesterday, I am the same manager today that I was yesterday so if people think us winning tonight makes me a better manager or whoever thinks I wasn’t doing a good job yesterday, should be feeling the same way. I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t affect what I do. For me, it’s always about the dressing room. Do the players believe? Do the staff believe? That’s much more important than what others may make of me. So, unfortunately for a lot of you, you’re going to have to put up with me for a little bit longer, so let’s see how that goes!"

Tottenham Hale

Tottenham Hale is a fully accessible station and is served by the Victoria line and Greater Anglia services.

Supporters travelling on the Victoria line are encouraged to use Tottenham Hale rather than Seven Sisters as it is a shorter journey to and from the stadium.
