Women | Team news | Charli Grant, Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg ruled out of Villa meeting - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho has confirmed that three further players face a period on the sidelines as we prepare to face Aston Villa on Sunday.

Back in Barclays Women’s Super League action this weekend as we host the Villans following the international break, there has been some disappointing news on the injury front with Charlie Grant, Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg all ruled out until at least Christmas.

The trio join long-term absentees Ella Morris, Luana Buhler and Maite Oroz on the sidelines.

Speaking his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Martin said, “Charli Grant has picked up a bit of injury. We won’t see her this side of Christmas, we’ll see her just after.

"Olga picked an injury up on international camp. We won’t see Olga this side of Christmas. It’s just a small injury.

"Cathinka the same. She picked up an injury on international camp as well and it’s more than likely we won’t see Cathinka until after Christmas also.”

Thomas Frank previews Brentford: "It's all about getting three points" - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

All eyes will be on Thomas Frank as Brentford arrive in N17 on Saturday - his focus is solely on the job in hand.

Thomas spent nine years at Brentford and was Head Coach from 2018-2025, before joining us in the summer. During that time, he became only the second Brentford boss to achieve promotion to the top-flight of English football when he led Bees to the Premier League in 2021.

Naturally, his first match against his former team was high on the agenda at his pre-match press conference at Hotspur Way on Thursday afternoon.

“Of course, it's a little bit more special for me because I face Brentford, where I'd been for nine years - that's almost a quarter of my life," he said. "I had a fantastic time there, enjoyed every second of it. There are a lot of people I haven't seen for a long time and I used to see them every day, more or less, so that will be special.

"Players I know very well, of course, there are small tweaks to what you could say I used to do, but a lot of the identity is the same in many ways, which makes it difficult in many ways – but when the whistle goes, it's all about getting three points and winning.”

Will you celebrate if you score against your old team?

Thomas: “I will, because I think everyone respects the respect I got for Brentford. The fans, everyone, before kick-off, after kick-off, or after the final whistle. In the 90 minutes plus, it's all about one thing, do what we can to win the game.”

How will you feel when you come up against players you bought for Brentford, players you trusted to go out and perform for Brentford?

Thomas: “That's the nature of football. As I said, before the game and after the game, I'm looking forward to seeing good people I really enjoyed working with - players, staff, everyone - but during the game it's just about competing and winning a match. It's the same if I'm playing a padel game or something against good colleagues, when we're playing, we're playing, it's not for fun, it's competitive, and after we can be happy again.”

Eveliina Summanen receives major Finland honour - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Eveliina Summanen has been named Finland’s Women’s Player of the Year for the first time in her career!

Following a standout year in Lilywhite and for her national team, the midfielder has been recognised with the award.

Presented by the Finnish Football Association, the title was handed out at a Captain Ball’s gala, which was held in Helsinki on Thursday (4 December), with players awarded for their positive and significant work for the benefit of Finnish football.

The award comes after a number of strong performances throughout the 2024/25 campaign while impressing at Euro 2025 for Finland.

Closing in on a century of appearances for us - currently on 93 - the 27-year-old registered nine goal involvements last term in all competitions (three goals and six assists).

The all-action midfielder has also been ever-present for Martin Ho in the WSL this term, starting in all nine games in our particularly strong start to the campaign as we sit fifth in the table on 16 points.

Although she might only have one goal to her name this season, it was another added to her stunning collection of finishes, curling home a brilliant free-kick in our clash with London City Lionesses – which was subsequently nominated for WSL Goal of the Month award for November.

On the international stage, Eveliina featured in all three group games for Finland at Euro 2025 in the summer, where she also registered an assist in the 1-0 win over Iceland – their first victory in the competition for 16 years.

Last month, our number 25 surpassed 80 appearances for Finland in a 1-1 draw with Austria.

Under-18s set for Seagulls trip on Saturday - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-18s face a tough test on the south coast on Saturday with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion (11.30am UK).

Just 10 days before we host the Seagulls in the FA Youth Cup, it’s something of a dress rehearsal as we meet them in the Under-18 Premier League this weekend.

New Under-18s Coach Jamie Carr could rotate his team in certain areas with that cup tie in mind, although he’ll nevertheless be looking for a strong showing from the players at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

We’re third in the standings ahead of the weekend, just three points off the top, while Brighton are ninth with 14 points from 10 games.

Supporters will be able to follow live text updates from the game via our Match Centre here on tottenhamhotspur.com and the Spurs Official app.

Our official Academy social media channels will also carry key updates, with a full match report available on the website and app after the game as usual.

The Daly Brief | Spurs vs Brentford, Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

"Direct play, dangerous long throws, a prolific striker and smart signings make Brentford a threat. What changes will Thomas Frank make against his old club?"

Rob Daly, official club commentator, presenter and pundit

Brentford's new era...

Keith Andrews has kept many of Brentford’s fundamentals the same, and they remain flexible in terms of shape, using a 3-5-2 on Wednesday against Arsenal, switching up from their more regular 4-2-3-1. Last season Brentford averaged 48% possession under Thomas Frank, while that figure is closer to 43% now – but stats around goals scored, goals conceded and long passes remain similar. The Bees are direct and look to play quickly up to their front three, while passes from Mikkel Damsgaard, in the 10 position, can slice open opposition defences as well. "The one thing we have got is individual brilliance," explained Andrews, praising the club’s impressive recruitment hit-rate, "players capable of moments.”

Long throw threat...

Expect Michael Kayode to start – a player armed with, perhaps, the most dangerous long throw in the Premier League. The defender joined in January and, by the season’s end, was Frank’s starting right-back, showcasing his ability to launch the ball into the box too. In 25/26 so far, no player has used more long throws – while the Bees have scored from them against Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle thanks to Kayode’s pacey, low-flight delivery. As a result, the Italy Under-21 international ranks second amongst Premier League defenders for chances created (17).

Igor beats Ivan's record...

Only Erling Haaland (15) has scored more league goals than Igor Thiago (11) and, like the Norwegian, his physicality, hold-up ability and running power has top defenders troubled. Injury caused him to miss 30 Premier League matches last season after a summer 2024 move from Club Bruges. Despite that tough start, Thiago’s now on fire and his brace in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Burnley saw him become the fastest Brentford player to 10+ Premier League goals, beating an Ivan Toney record. Those numbers have been needed, given two big departures...

Replacing a captain and two goalscorers...

Bryan Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa left for Manchester United and Newcastle respectively in the summer – scorers of 39 league goals between them in 24/25. Kevin Schade and Dango Ouattara, with three goals each, may not reach those numbers but provide devastating pace on the counter too. Christian Norgaard has gone but Jordan Henderson adds defensive midfield cover and experience alongside either Mathias Jensen or Yehor Yarmolyuk. Should Spurs be awarded a first penalty in the league this season, note that new goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, over the past two seasons, has saved kicks from Kylian Mbappe, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Switch up from St. James'...

With Micky van de Ven on the bench for the first time this season in the Premier League at Newcastle, one imagines he’ll come in alongside two-goal hero Cristian Romero. Into midfield, Joao Palhinha wasn’t involved that game, so could replace Rodrigo Bentancur, while Thomas Frank and his staff will assess if the craft of Xavi Simons in the 10 position may be needed against a resolute Brentford. Randal Kolo Muani is hitting his stride but has started three matches in a row – so will he be rotated out for one of Richarlison or Mathys Tel? Meanwhile, Brentford should have fresh legs in Igor Thiago, Mikkel Damsgaard, Nathan Collins and Jordan Henderson - only used as subs at Arsenal.

Last time we met...

The lowdown on Aston Villa | Finley Chung - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our final home game of 2025 sees Aston Villa visit Brisbane Road on Sunday (12pm UK) in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

As we make our return to action this weekend following the international break, we spoke to Finley Chung, journalist for Beyond The Pitch and Footie Fusion, to give us the lowdown on the Villans…

First up, how would Aston Villa reflect on the first half of the campaign as we play the penultimate fixture of the calendar year?

Finley: “I think Villa would be pleased given their start to the season. They ended last term strongly and gave Natalia Arroyo a good summer leading to her first full season at the club, and I think they’ve done well. Of course, some of the draws ideally would’ve been turned into wins, but the late draw at Arsenal shows just the sheer fight and mentality in the Villa squad.”

Talk to us about that massive win over Manchester United at the start of November and their unbeaten run away from home so far?

Finley: “Their away form has been nothing short of superb this season, one away goal on the road is testament to their defensive solidity. They are second on the way with WSL clean sheets with Sabrina D’Angelo on three - the former Arsenal stopper has finally found a home where she is loved and allowed to flourish. Anna Patten was one of the big reasons for the memorable three points at Manchester United, with a highly successful duel rate and tackle success rate.”

Lucia Kendall shone for the Lionesses over the international break - how has she settled into life in WSL and her breakthrough moment with England?

Finley: “She’s the name on everyone’s lips right now after a superb international break, rounded off by an almost ‘fairytale’ goal at Southampton against Ghana. Kendall has shone this season by being an almost ever present in the Aston Villa team. Her standout performance came in the 0-0 draw with Leicester, leading in pass accuracy, defensive contributions and ball recoveries. She dictates play in the middle of the park superbly, and Spurs will need one eye on her this weekend.”

Who else would be your ‘one to watch’ this weekend from Aston Villa?

Finley: “It might appear obvious, but Lynn Wilms has been nothing short of fantastic since joining Villa after four years at Wolfsburg. Deployed at the right side of a back three on her favoured side, she has shone in Arroyo’s back three system, with an eye for a set piece too, as seen in Villa’s 2-0 win over West Ham. She has an eye for goal from defence, but also does the day job very well too, part of Villa’s structured defensive unit with Anna Patten and Oceane Deslandes to her left, the 25-year-old has added vital experience and quality.”

Has Natalia Arroyo changed anything in her second season at the Club?

Finley: “I wouldn’t say too much has changed. Noelle Martiz has moved out to left wing back, the emergence of Kendall is key also but the shape, tactical systems are very similar to what was deployed when Natalia was appointed Villa head coach. They have become harder to beat, but sometimes lack the cutting edge going forward.”

How do you see the game panning out on Sunday?

Finley: “I see a tight encounter. Villa’s away record again, speaks for itself but Spurs have been brilliant at home, especially against Arsenal last time out where they defended superbly. The feel-good factor will be around Spurs, with this their last game of the year at home and the signing of Signe Gaupset too, with Villa keen to spoil the party. The two tactical set ups will be intriguing and a fascinating watch.”

Spurs vs Brentford | Every word of Thomas Frank’s pre-match press conference - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank spoke to the media at Hotspur Way on Thursday afternoon, ahead of our Premier League clash against his former club Brentford at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Here’s what he had to say…

It's already being called the Thomas Frank derby – is that an extra incentive to put the home record right?

Thomas: “Of course, it's a little bit more special for me because I face Brentford, where I'd been for nine years. That's almost a quarter of my life. I had a fantastic time there, enjoyed every second of it. There's a lot of people I haven't seen for a long time and I used to see them every day, more or less, so that will be special. It would be not true not to say that, and it is very true, but today it has been preparation against a team. Players I know very well, of course, there are small tweaks to what you could say I used to do, but a lot of the identity is the same in many ways, which makes it difficult in many ways – but when the whistle goes, it's all about getting three points and winning.”

You are struggling at home, they are struggling away – something’s got to give, hasn’t it?

Thomas: “Yeah, definitely. It will be nice timing for us to get the three points on Saturday. There's only one way to do that, put a good performance in there, work on the things we're constantly working on - phase two, phase three, constantly make it sharper, quicker, not direct, but more penetration when we need to have that, play with intensity, come out brave, and we're looking forward to the game.”

Have you had your defenders out there practising their overhead kicks?

Thomas: “Maybe Cuti and Micky should play strikers. We discussed a little bit if it was Richy or Cuti's overhead kick that was the best. I think they agreed to disagree, let's put it that way.”

Any issues following the Newcastle game, any injuries?

Thomas: “No, everyone from the Newcastle game should be ready.”

What did you make of the half-time huddle and how happy are you to leave the players to their own devices when it comes to how they can encourage each other?

Thomas: “I think it's on the pitch, the more they can encourage each other, the more there's a positive body language, all the small setbacks, all the good, positive actions, I think that just builds to that togetherness and that performance, so I think it's good. They're out there on the pitch, they're out in the arena, none of us are out there. I know I stand close to it, but I'm not in there. They need to sort it out and they can only do that together.”

When did you first know that Keith Andrews would make a good manager?

Thomas: “I think first and foremost, it's big credit to Brentford to be brave enough to promote him, but also have built something over time. I've been there nine years, seven years almost, as a head coach, and it's definitely not about me, it's about what we together built there, that consistency, stability and high performance at the level. So, that culture, knowing who we are, what we want to be, that was easier to continue with, with appointing Keith, and I think he's done a remarkable job. It's never easy to step up to your first head coach role. The club lost crucial players in the summer, and the way they just continued, you can see they got what I would call the Brentford identity, and he knows that with culture and style of play and kept it, but also tweaked it with his ideas because we're all different, so big praise. What I saw in Keith, very good man, good values, good coach, had leadership potential, very impressive.”

Who had the more difficult job? Keith stepping up for his first ever managerial role at a club he knew, or you coming here to a club you didn't know?

Thomas: “I think it's, how can you say, difficult challenge, experience, whatever you call it. Two different levels. He's come within the club, but he still needs to be standing out there a little bit more on his own, in front of everyone, facing players, staff, owners, press, everything. At the end of the day, it's his decision, dealing with the ups and downs and it was not an easy summer, looking from the outside, with players leaving the club and stuff like that, and didn't have just a perfect start to the first three or four games, he still kept calm. Here it's different, of course, stepping into a new club, but again, you need to know how the players are, the club, leadership, everything. So, yeah, both good challenges.”

How will you feel on Saturday when you come up against players you bought for Brentford, players you trusted to go out and perform for Brentford?

Thomas: “That's the nature of football. As I said, before the game and after the game, I'm looking forward to seeing good people. I really enjoy to work with players, staff, everyone, but during the game it's just about competing and winning a match. It's the same if I'm playing a padel game or something against good colleagues, when we're playing, we're playing, it's not for fun, it's competitive, and after we can be happy again.”

Heung-Min Son is back (against Slavia Prague on 9 December) - the fans are going to love seeing him, and I guess he might be able to give you some good luck?

Thomas: “That would be nice, no doubt about that. I'm so pleased for Sonny that he’ll come back and really hopefully got the well-deserved celebration for everything he's done for this club. I think it was a fantastic send off in South Korea, but on Tuesday I really hopes he gets that.”

Sonny was really good at bringing people together at this club - do you think you've missed him as a kind of unifying figure on the pitch and in the dressing room this season?

Thomas: “Yeah. I don't know, I would say. He's not here, so others need to step up. It's like when you miss a player for whatever reason, because leadership qualities are part of Sonny, bringing people together, the level they had, others will step up, others will shine a little bit more, because some of the players that were there before took the shine, if that makes sense. Of course, you can always use good people as Sonny.”

Sonny’s position was normally from the left - do you feel you know who your preferred candidate is in that position?

Thomas: “I think it's fair to say that there is competition for that left-side role. I think everyone can see that. There are two things in it. We've played a fair amount of games, we play every third or fourth day, so there needs to be rotation as well. It's also fair to say that there's not been one player that put his foot down, ‘I'm playing that position’.”

Do you have an update on Dominic Solanke or Deki Kulusevski?

Thomas: “When they are ready to really be close to being involved in the squad, then I will give more information.”

When is Mathys Tel going to get the opportunity that he's been pushing for?

Thomas: “That's a good question - when I take the decision. We spoke about Mathys before. It's been a toughish season for him, of course. The first thing was we can't run away from that he was not involved in the Champions League squad, but the way he carries himself, the way he trains, his mindset is very good, and that's also why I've used him in games, he also started mainly as a nine in the games he played this season, I'm very aware he also can play off the left, so it's a little bit what kind of type and who you go with, and how many players can you go with on the side and stuff like that. The only thing that any player can do is to keep training well, keep doing everything they can to catch my eye, and make it very difficult for me when I take my decisions.”

How has Xavi reacted to being substitute four the last four games?

Thomas: “Xavi has trained fantastic. The last five or six times he really could train, very good attitude on the training pitch. I like that a lot. We played different games with different line-ups. I think Xavi was coming towards something better and better, and as long as he trains well, good attitude, then we're getting closer and closer. I think it's also fair to say that he's coming on in all four games we've played.”

Any reason he didn’t start against Fulham?

Thomas: “It's just different scenarios. We played with two strikers against PSG, both of them scored. I think it's fair to say that. I will not say that we struggled to score, because we scored 23 goals. I think that's quite a fairly high amount, that's quite good, but we also played with the two in just a little bit different role against Man United. So, it's just different personnel and who's been a little bit in form and stuff like that.”
