Vital victory on final day - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Nine difficult months came down to over 100 minutes of nail-biting tension in N17 and in the end, it was a Joao Palhinha goal on the stroke of half-time that separated the sides. It might have been only our first home league win since December and only our third all season, but what a time to get it.

Elsewhere across London, our rivals for relegation West Ham United did their job and beat Leeds United to ensure we couldn’t afford defeat against Everton. And, while we had a lead to hold on to, we defended it for our lives. We went deep into stoppage time, 102 minutes to be precise, with the Toffees throwing everything at us in the final minutes. But we held out, held on to the three points and when the final whistle sounded, euphoria erupted inside the stadium, players sunk to their knees in a combination of exhaustion and delight and a huge collective sigh of relief was breathed.

Roberto De Zerbi arrived in mid-April to try to steady the ship and did exactly that, taking charge for seven games – winning three, drawing two and losing two – rounding off with this huge result over Everton to get us over the line.

On a searingly hot May day – one of the hottest on record – the atmosphere was superb out on the High Road to greet the team coach arrival and that carried on inside the stadium as the fans rose to the occasion. That lifted the players as we were the much better team for the majority of the game, making a great start with three early chances. On six minutes, the ball was floated into the box, Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane got in each other’s way and it eventually fell to Conor Gallagher but he could only fire into the side-netting. We continued to set the pace and four minutes later, won a corner which landed at the feet of Kevin Danso who drilled wide from eight yards out before a Pedro Porro free-kick flicked off a head and went to Palhinha at the back post but he fired way over the crossbar.

Everton’s first sight of goal came in the 22nd minute after a James Garner free-kick wide on their right which was flicked well wide by a visiting head in the middle. A brief drinks break followed due to the stifling heat and when we got back underway, it was a more even contest with the weather perhaps taking an early toll.

The tricky Iliman Ndiaye threatened with a mazy run just after the half-hour but his final shot was blocked while, at the other end, Danso’s header from a corner trickled through to Pickford with Richarlison lurking. Mathys Tel then struck a curling effort that looked to be troubling Pickford had it not struck the head of James Tarkowksi.

Just two minutes before the break though, elation inside the stadium as we took the lead. Gallagher was fouled out by the corner flag down our left, Porro’s free-kick was headed against the post by Palhinha but he was quickest to the rebound and poked it past Pickford, with Thierno Barry unable to prevent it from just crossing the line. It was the perfect time to score and we went into the interval with everything looking good.

After a delayed restart due to the match officials’ equipment not working properly, we almost added a second in the 48th minute when Djed Spence hit a shot towards the bottom corner which Pickford spilled, the ball rolling out just past his post.

News filtered through just after the hour mark that West Ham had opened the scoring in their game which added another layer of intrigue to the afternoon and it came during a period of the game in which Everton were starting to enjoy more possession, even if Antonin Kinsky wasn’t being tested in goal.

As the game entered its final minutes, it had reached the stage where it was all about managing it correctly rather than trying to force another goal and we brought on fresh legs to help, including James Maddison in an attempt to get some control of the closing stages.

Instead, we almost conceded with five minutes remaining when Carlos Alcaraz slipped in Tyrique George, he pulled the ball across the six-yard box when confronted by Kinsky but our defenders were back to thwart the danger and Kinsky gathered the ball. As the final whistle sounded at the London Stadium, we had nine more minutes to negotiate and the visitors had another half-chance when Keane’s header only just cleared the crossbar.

We were really struggling to keep the ball and continued to invite the pressure and there were hearts in mouths when George cut inside off the left and whipped a shot which was heading to the top corner until Kinsky’s stunning diving save tipped it over the bar. Eventually, the final whistle was blown and survival was rubber-stamped.

The Daly Brief | Spurs vs Everton - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Rob Daly, official club commentator, presenter and pundit

What are Everton playing for?

A run of six without a win has almost certainly ended Everton’s hopes of qualifying for European football for the first time in eight years. After a 3-0 win over Chelsea before the March international break, a third victory in four, Everton were seventh. However, since then, they’ve conceded late winners to West Ham and Liverpool and squandered leads vs Manchester City (3-3), Crystal Palace (2-2) and Sunderland (1-3) to drop points. Twelfth at kick-off - it isn’t mathematically impossible they finish top eight but, regardless, they’re set for a best league finish since 2020/21.

England's 'mini Valverde'

One stand out player this season has been industrious midfielder James Garner. “He's our mini Valverde,” said England Head Coach Thomas Tuchel of the midfielder following an impressive Three Lions debut in March. “He has this natural confidence and he's just very physical. He won a lot of balls." In fact, no Premier League player has made more tackles than Garner’s 116 this season - with Joao Gomes (107) and Spurs’ own Joao Palhinha (106) just behind. “I think he’s probably a No.8 but really I think there might be a future for Jimmy to be a good No.6 as well,” explained David Moyes recently. “He can do both those jobs... and he’s had to fill in at full-back, when we’ve had suspensions and injuries.”

Porro vs Ndiaye?

A compelling head-to-head battle could come down the Everton left, should Iliman Ndiaye start there again. The Senegal international has six goals and three assists and, for much of the season, thrilled with his skill and running on the wing. Despite a drop in Ndiaye's form of late, it’s crucial that Pedro Porro, one of Spurs’ better performers at Chelsea in midweek, shuts him down. Ndiaye was a major threat against Spurs earlier in the season playing down the right, constantly running at Djed Spence, and he would have scored but for some Guglielmo Vicario brilliance.

Richarlison to the rescue

After his strike on Tuesday, Richarlison is now on 12 goals as Spurs’ top scorer. He has relegation fight experience during his time at Everton – scoring six goals in the final 10 games of the 2021/22 season to keep them up. An excellent record against his former club is worthy of note too - a header to supply goalscorer Pape Matar Sarr in October’s 3-0 win on Merseyside took him to five goal involvements in five games against Everton (four goals, one assist). A reminder too that David Moyes’ side struggled from Spurs’ quality on corners with Micky van de Ven scoring two headers in the first half at the Hill Dickinson.

Maddison - difference maker

In both appearances since returning from that ACL injury, James Maddison looked the most proactive player on the pitch. Against Chelsea, brought on in the 69th minute, he constantly dropped to get on the ball, before working give-and-go’s with team-mates to drive up field. “I felt good, yes. I've obviously been out for a long time, so I don't feel 100 per cent sharp and fit,” he told us after the Chelsea defeat, having also nearly scored for 2-2. “That's why it's disappointing we didn't get anything out of the game, because I felt like we were pushing and I felt involved in that but, like I said, just that lack of quality in the front third just let us down on a few moments in a game where we probably should have got something, I think.” How many minutes can he give Roberto De Zerbi today?

Description

The Netherlands international defender lit up Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an astonishing individual effort back on 4 November, collecting the ball deep in our half and driving through the heart of the visitors’ ranks before powering a shot into the net.

It was the third goal of an eventual 4-0 win against the Danish side in the league stage of the UEFA Champions League, and was reminiscent of a similar solo goal scored by Heung-Min Son against Burnley in 2019.

Having run 67.7m before firing into the back of the net, Micky broke the record for the longest ball carry ending in a goal in the history of the Champions League.

The 25-year-old was presented with his award on Friday as a small number of fans came in to Hotspur Way to hand out our end-of-season prizes.

Shekiera Martinez: 10 facts about our newest arrival - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

The Germany international will join upon the opening of the summer transfer window from West Ham United and has signed a long-term contract with the Club.

Learning her trade in her homeland with Frankfurt and SC Freiburg, the forward has taken the Women’s Super League by storm since making her debut in January, 2025, scoring 16 goals in 32 appearances.

Now she embarks on a new chapter in her footballing career as she makes the move to north London.

Get to know our newest arrival below with 10 interesting facts about her...

WSL Accolades

Shekiera might have only been in England for 18 months, but she has certainly made her mark.

Although she joined West Ham United in August, 2024, the forward spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign at German side SC Freiburg before returning to the England in January, 2025.

After that, there was no stopping her. Just nine minutes into her first start, she opened her account in the WSL with a goal against Everton. She then followed that up with a brace away at Chelsea before netting four in a thumping 7-1 win at Crystal Palace, ending the season with 10 goals in 12 league games.

Her relentless first few months in the competition saw her claim the league’s Player of the Month awards in both March and April – the first West Ham player to do so – and was named the WSL Rising Star for 2024/25.

Sweet 16

Following spells at SV Glaserzell and FV Hores in her youth career, Shekiera joined Eintracht at the age of 16.

Having spent time with their Under-17s squad in her first year, she then stepped up to the senior squad for 2017/18 campaign, featuring regularly for their reserve side in the 2. Bundesliga in the first half of that season.

Then, at just 17 years old, she made her Bundesliga debut in February, 2018, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 win over FC Koln.

Frankfurt Centurion

Since joining the Hesse-based side in 2016, the 24-year-old spent a remarkable eight seasons on the Main.

Helping them end a six-year absence from the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2022, Shekiera went on to surpass 100 appearances for the German team.

Before departing the club in the summer of 2024, she had made 135 appearances in total, scoring 32 goals.

Fulfilling a promise

At the age of eight, Shekiera told her family that she wanted to play football.

Growing up in Floura, Germany, she was one of four girls and a boy in her family – in which, by then, one of her older sisters had given up persuading the opportunity in the game.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian back in August, 2025, she revealed that her mum told her: “‘No, you won’t play for long. You’ll be like your sister,’” she recalls. “And so then I gave her a promise that I would play for longer than my sister.”

Nearly 16 years later, her journey in the game continues at pace.

She loves her dogs!

Away from the pitch, Shekiera has two dogs at home that she loves very much!

Both are puppies, Ruby is 10 months old and Ivy is one-and-a-half years old.

Playing on the biggest stage

When asked for one of her standout moments in her career to date, she replied with playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Shekiera competed in Europe’s elite competition while at Eintracht, making her debut in the tournament in September, 2022, in a qualifying match against Fortuna Hjorring.

Having helped her side to progress to the group phase in the following term, she netted her first goal in the competition in a 5-0 win over FC Rosengard – who fielded current Spur, Olivia Holdt - in January, 2024, while she also registered two assists.

Slam dunk

While taking the WSL by storm on the pitch, Shekiera also plays a number of other sports in her downtime.

Having played tennis a couple of times before and enjoying it, she has recently brought some rackets to continue having a go and have it as a hobby.

Alongside tennis, she also really likes playing basketball.

Into the history books

Representing Germany at the UEFA Women’s Under-17 European Championships, Shekiera wrote her name into the UEFA’s record books.

Scoring an impressive nine goals in the tournament to help her nation finish as runner ups, she equalled a record number of goals scored in a UEFA football final tournament – jointly held by Michel Platini at Euro 84 and Elena Danilova at 2005 Women’s Under-19 Euro.

Having netted six in the group stage, only one off the record for any UEFA final tournament, she then scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against England to take her tally to nine.

Favourite meal

Shekiera revealed that her favourite meal is a lasagne!

But not any lasagne, specifically the one that her girlfriend makes as ‘she knows how to make it the best’.

A proud moment on the international stage

Having progressed through the youth set-up with Germany, representing from the age groups of Under-15 to Under-19, she received her maiden call-up to the senior squad in October, 2025.

Her debut came the following month as she was a second-half substitute for Germany in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League Final as they faced Spain.

A proud moment for Shekiera and her family.
