Description

Dominic Solanke spoke to the media at Deutsche Bank Park on Tuesday evening, ahead of our UEFA Champions League MD8 clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night (8pm UK).

Here's what he had to say...

You like to run, like to press – how close are you to being the player that you want to be again in terms of fitness?

Dominic: “Hopefully soon. I feel good, I feel fit. All of my injury worries have gone away. I was out for quite a long time. I'm obviously not going to get straight up to fitness and sharpness straight away, but I've been training with the team for a bit now and a few games under my belt. I'm feeling good."

You won the game here last season with your penalty - does it feel like you're on a knife edge again and does that make things harder?

Dominic: "We're seeing tomorrow as a positive. Last year we came here and got a great result, and we're looking to do that again tomorrow. It's a great opportunity for us to finish in the top eight, and yeah, we're looking forward to the game more than anything."

Can you tell us how you guys felt going into the game last season? Did you feel like it could have been - and it was - a real turning point for what was, at that time, quite a difficult season?

Dominic: "Yeah, last year we weren't as good as we wanted to be in the league, and we had the European competition to look forward to as well, and that was a huge game in our season. We obviously want to win cups at this club, and I think, like you mentioned, that was a huge part of winning that. We've got fond memories of it, it was a close game, and we managed to just win the game and then go on to win the trophy. We haven't got anything but good things to say about that game."

You were on the sidelines for six months - how desperate are you to make up for lost time and come to the aid of the team right now?

Dominic: "Yeah, it's always difficult being injured, personally, but obviously it's always hard to watch the team and know that you can't really help and do anything to change that. But yeah, I'm back fit now and like I mentioned, I feel good, so I want to do everything I can to help the team. We're only just past the halfway mark and we've still got a lot of games to play and I still believe we can still go on to have a good season. So obviously I'm hoping to play a big role in that, but we're all looking for the positives."

Description

Thomas Frank spoke to the media at Deutsche Bank Park on Tuesday evening, ahead of our UEFA Champions League MD8 clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night (8pm UK).

Here's what he had to say...

Thomas, can you tell us who's travelled and the reasons behind why those who haven't travelled haven't, and just clear up the situation regarding Randal Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert?

Thomas: “Yeah, a few things to report. Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert are both fine. Unfortunately, both were involved in a minor accident. Everyone else involved in that accident was just fine. It was a tyre blowing up. So, the two of them are a little bit delayed, they will arrive a little later tonight. That’s the first thing. Then Pedro hasn't travelled, unfortunately he’s picked up a hamstring injury, so he’ll be out for four weeks. Micky hasn't travelled - minor, minor thing, possibly available for the weekend. I think that's it.”

Was there any update on Dejan Kulusevski?

Thomas: “No, I don't have any update on that one.”

Can you put your finger on the difference between the form in the Premier League and in Europe?

Thomas: “First and foremost, I think tomorrow we have a great opportunity to secure a position in the top eight, which will be a very good result, a very good achievement. We're very, very positive and looking forward to that. So, that's what we're focusing everything we can on. The other thing is that I think the performances for a while have been good in many ways, we just haven't got on the right side enough to get the three points. That's what we're working very hard on, sometimes you’re in that spell. The players are giving everything. But for me, tomorrow, it's all about Frankfurt. All about the opportunity ahead of us."

How confident are you of getting another player through the door before the window closes?

Thomas: “We are in the market. We are doing everything we can to see if we can improve the squad - we've said that the whole time. I think it's, of course, when things are not exactly where we want them, and we have some injuries, you can be pushed and forced to take decisions you don't really want to take if everything was on top. We need to be very, very smart and cool and calm and take good decisions to help us to optimise short-term success, but also secure long-term success."

Can I ask for more details of the car accident?

Thomas: “They were together. They are fine. It was on the way to the airport."

Does it feel like you're on a knife edge again here in Frankfurt - and does that make things harder?

Thomas: “I can't speak about last year, Dom can maybe talk about that in a second. For me, I see an opportunity ahead of us tomorrow that we want to do everything we can to grab with both hands. I think it's quite clear, I said before the Dortmund one, that we have just at this moment in time with injuries and the squad list, we have limited players available, so since that game, Lucas is unfortunately not available, and Pedro. So, the good news is we have Pape back from AFCON, winning AFCON with Senegal, he was not in the squad on the weekend because he had some illness, so he's not super where he should be, but he's available. Joao Palhinha is also available, so that's also a positive. We have enough good players and then, great opportunities for Academy players coming off the bench, and we saw Jun’ai get a fantastic debut against Dortmund. We are confident we can produce results, and that's what we're going for."

Going back to the accident again, are they shaken? Will they be in the right frame of mind for Eintracht Frankfurt?

Thomas: "That is my absolute understanding of everything. I haven't spoken to them personally yet, because the first thing we heard, the first message, is that they are fine. And nothing happened, as I said the first time. They'll fly out later, and I fully expect both to be available for tomorrow."

How proud are you of what you’ve done so far in the Champions League?

Thomas: “Again, it's not about me. It's about us. I'm very happy that the team and the Club we are in a position where, with a win tomorrow, we can finish top eight in the best club tournament in the world, and it's super, super competitive, as we know. So that we are very, very pleased with. Those results and some of those performances are also what we need to take going forward, of course, and build on that. Again, it's me, it's my job to look a little bit in the bigger perspective. You know, even that we haven't won as much as we want, it's very, very few things that need to go our way. You know, the small margins - keep doing the right thing, keep improving things you want to do, and getting quality players back, such as Dominic Solanke as I’ve talked about before. Dom is a huge for us, he's been out for six months. You know, to have your main striker and top scorer out - I'd like to see some of the other teams being out there as well, so that means something. Dom is a physical beast, great mentality, but he pushes to the limit as well, coming from being off the bench playing 50 minutes, then 70 minutes, going over the ground, then 90 minutes. So, he's pushing everything he can, but it's a tough job."

Another injury, Pedro, and he's one of your best players. How much of a blow is that?

Thomas: “It definitely does not help any of us. Of course, we prefer to have the best players out there on the pitch - any coach wants that, any team-mate wants that. We also have a squad that need other players to step up, as they've done before.”

Is there something about the Champions League that gets this team going more than other competitions?

Thomas: “I think there is. It's definitely proven, I would say. Maybe there's not a specific science behind it, but the mental and the physical load on players to produce every third and fourth game is very big. It's so big and it's more difficult to do that. And, of course, the bigger the competition, from Conference League to Europa League to Champions League, it's just better teams. That means you need to give more and that you need to have players in a squad that is, I would not say used to it but are learning over time to go out and produce no matter what. That's a big thing. A lot of teams you can see either getting (better) adapted to it. I know Newcastle talked a lot about it the first time they were in the Champions League a couple of years ago, and even this season as well. So, it's just as an example, or Villa last year, whatever it is. We just need to learn from it and keep producing. Then sometimes, it's the small things that even if you do a lot of things right, you don't get the result and then, oh, everything is a catastrophe. Actually, behind the scenes there's a lot of things going in the right direction."

Can I ask about Antonin Kinsky? Has he been frustrated not playing?

Thomas: “I'm happy with Kinsky. He's a great keeper. I think any player wants to play, but you also need good players if something happens with Vic, for example.”

On Micky - is it a hamstring?

Thomas: “It’s just a minor thing. We expect him to be a big possibility for City.”

Not a hamstring?

Thomas: “No, not a hamstring.”

Could you give us your thoughts on Eintracht Frankfurt? What kind of game do you expect?

Thomas: “Of course, we've studied them closely. They may not be in their best form, but it's a team, I think, done fantastic in the league last year. I still think they have done some fantastic results and played fantastic games this season. Recently, they just played 3-3 with Dortmund. I think that's four or five games ago. They have very good players, and they have a clear identity in what they want to do. I expect a very difficult game, where they will come in a man-man pressure tomorrow. I think they are very good in the transitions. I expect a difficult game. I know they are in pain, they don't have anything to play for, but sometimes you can play free. I've been in this game long enough that usually you don't know what you're going to face tomorrow. It, of course, needs to be thoughts on us, with big respect for Frankfurt. We know all their strengths, no doubt about that.”

Opposition team news | Key forwards among six ruled out for Eintracht - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Eintracht Frankfurt will be without six players for Wednesday's League Phase meeting in the UEFA Champions League, including their top two goalscorers.

Taking on the Die Adler at Deutsche Bank Park, the German side have confirmed that the two forwards, who started the season in electric form, will both miss the clash in Frankfurt.

Summer arrival Jonathan Burkardt, who began the season with 11 goals in 15 games, unfortunately suffered a calf injury in November which continues to keep him out of action.

Meanwhile, Can Uzun, who scored in six of his first seven games of the campaign, was forced off in Eintracht's Bundesliga defeat to TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The duo are joined on the sidelines by Elias Baum, Jessic Ngankam, Younes Ebnoutalib and former Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi.

Description

Micky van de Ven has joined Pedro Porro on the sidelines and hasn't travelled to Germany for our UEFA Champions League crunch game against Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow night (8pm UK).

Thomas Frank described Micky's injury as a 'minor thing' and said he could yet still be available to face Manchester City in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (4.30pm UK).

Meanwhile, Thomas said Randal Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert should be ready for selection after being involved in a 'minor accident' on Tuesday.

Victory against the Bundesliga side would secure a place in the top eight of the league phase and therefore a place in the Round of 16 in March, skipping the play-off round (teams placed 9-24) in February.

Thomas was asked for the latest team news at his pre-match press conference at Deutsche Bank Park. He said: "A few things to report.

"Pedro hasn't travelled, unfortunately he’s picked up a hamstring injury, so he’ll be out for four weeks. Micky hasn't travelled - minor, minor thing, possibly available for the weekend. I think that's it."

Good news sees the return of midfield duo Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr - Joao has missed our last three matches after picking up a knock in training while Pape, who last featured on 14 December as he helped Senegal win AFCON, has recovered from illness to make the trip.

Speaking to us at DB Park, Thomas said: "Pape is ready again, he's been ill, hasn't done too much over the last two weeks, but he's trained well last two days. He's available. Joao is also ready. He's worked really hard to get back from his injury, that's also a positive. Of course, both will be pushed to play the full 90 minutes.

"It's an opportunity for others to step up and be ready, players in the Academy - a great example was Jun'ai (Byfield) when he came on in an important game against Borussia Dortmund last week."

It's much-needed good news as well, with 14 senior players unavailable through injury or ineligibility - Porro, van de Ven, Richarlison, James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, Mo Kudus, Deki Kulusevski, Rodri Bentancur, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, Mathys Tel, Conor Gallagher and our latest arrival, Souza.

Description

Thomas Frank has revealed that Pedro Porro is out of our UEFA Champions League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt and faces a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The full-back picked up the problem in the first half of our 2-2 draw at Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday where he was withdrawn at half-time, replaced by Destiny Udogie.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference at Eintracht Frankfurt's Deutsche Bank Park on Tuesday evening, ahead of our MD8 clash in the UCL on Wednesday night (8pm), Thomas reported: "Pedro hasn't travelled, unfortunately he’s picked up a hamstring injury, so he’ll be out for four weeks."

Micky van de Ven also hasn't made the trip to Germany with a 'minor issue' - Thomas said he could be in contention to face Manchester City on Sunday - meaning including ineligible players, we're without 14 senior players for this key match - victory books our place in the Round of 16.

Once A Spur | Lucia Leon - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

In each matchday programme, to celebrate our 40th anniversary, we speak to a former Spurs player to look back at their career and get their thoughts on the current side in our seventh season in the WSL.

Next up is defender Lucia Leon as she discusses her journey from a youth player to becoming a WSL star and now representing her nation on the international stage…

What were your first memories when you joined the Club in 2013 as a youth player?

Lucia: “I was a little bit scared because I didn’t speak any English, but I was really excited at the same time! I remember everyone treating me very well, they were all so nice to me, it felt like I had about 20 aunties. They always made sure I got to the train station safely or picked me up from the station, because we finished training late and I lived in south London, so it was a long journey. We had such a good team and it was always great vibes! We actually went on to do great things in the following years, and it was probably one of the best and most fun experiences I’ve had.”

From when you first joined, did you ever imagine how much progression you would see in such a short space of time, eventually becoming professional?

Lucia: “For the first few years, we were basically still an amateur team but, quickly after that, once we got promoted to the Championship and then only two seasons later into the WSL, the changes started to happen very fast. The Club really started to take the Women’s team seriously by giving us space at the training ground, our own facilities, gym, food, etc. It was very nice to see, and the fact that some players from that time are still there today, like Ashleigh [Neville] and Jess [Naz], makes me happy because they’ll value even more what they have now. I love seeing them play and smash it every weekend.”

We have fond memories of today’s opponent in WSL 2… talk to us about that game and what it meant to achieve that massive feat?

Lucia: “Oh wow, yeah, that game was crazy! What a beautiful memory. I remember going into that game super confident that we were going to get the job done. We came from a very strong season and had a very strong squad. I remember Ash practically saving a goal on the line with her head just before the referee blew the final whistle, and then everyone just went on to the floor to celebrate the promotion. After that, it’s all good memories and celebrations - it was a very special time for the squad.”

How did it feel to then become a WSL player and compete at the highest level back then?

Lucia: “It was a very tough and maturing experience. I was still young and inexperienced at that level, and I was so lucky to train and play with the best in the world. I learned so many things from them, especially how to be mentally strong and competitive. Now I use everything I learned back then in my day-to-day to help the young players coming through in whatever team I’m in.”

Favourite memory while wearing the Lilywhite shirt?

Lucia: “I have so many! I would say both promotions to WSL 2 and then to WSL are up there as some of my favourite moments of my career. But my favourite memories will always be the people I met - all the girls and coaches who helped me as a player and as a person. We spent a lot of time together, and many of them are still my best friends or close friends today.”

Following your departure, what have you been up to?

Lucia: “I went to play in La Liga F for a couple of seasons with Real Betis, then I came back to the WSL 2 with Watford for a season before moving to the A-League in Australia. Now I’m playing for Wellington Phoenix in the A-League.”

You now represent the Dominican Republic on the international stage and have captained the nation - how special is that?

Lucia: “It’s one of the moments I’m most proud of in my career, to be honest. I love representing the Dominican Republic, it’s a country I identify with a lot. I’m super honoured to be captain and to help the younger generations of our country and help the sport grow.”

Have you managed to keep up to date with the Club since then and stay in contact with former players?

Lucia: “Yeah, of course! I watch them every time I can, even though the time difference can be challenging! I love seeing the girls play and win. I’m super happy to see Kit [Graham] back, she is one of the best players I’ve ever played with, and I hope she gets her moment again and smashes it long-term. I also love seeing Jess and Ash having their names on that XI every week. I think Ash is just coming back from injury, so I’m happy to see her return. I will always support Spurs Women and would love for them to continue doing great things! They progress every year, and this is probably the year I’m enjoying watching them the most.”
